The Trinity: Nature and Public Space This past May, Mayor Mike Rawlings unveiled a new concept for the Trinity River Park. The concept includes a naturalized river landscape that is ever-changing, just like the Trinity River. During rainy seasons, the design allows for flowing waterways and lush greenery. During the drier seasons, it transforms itself into a marsh-like waterscape. The concept includes trails and sites for five elevated parks with overlooks that extend from inside the levees into the adjacent communities. Join us for this “What Makes a City? conference to see how the park will unfold and for a chance to hear from Mayor Rawlings, its designers, including lead architect Michael Van Valkenburgh, and other speakers.

The James Hillman Symposi

To honor Founding Fellow James Hillman, the Dallas Institute initiated this annual program aimed at exploring the rich depths of his lifelong study of, in his own words, a “psychology deliberately affiliated with the arts, culture, and the history of ideas, arising as they do from the imagination.” In 2016, we will explore Volume 5 of Hillman’s UNIFORM EDITION,

Alchemical Psychology, at the Dallas Institute. Friday highlights include talks by influential scholars, dinner, and a special appearance by magician Tom Verner, a close friend of Hillman’s. His performance-presentation encircles the notions of alchemy, magic, and psychology. The Symposium continues Saturday with a full day of sessions and concludes that evening with a lively celebration attended by all registrants and speakers.

Each year the Education Forum highlights and explores an issue in education that is of critical concern to the nation and to our city through two days of lectures, panels, and book discussions. Education has been the focus of the Dallas Institute’s work since its creation in 1980, and its distinctive and award-winning Teachers Academy and Principals Institute are its most enduring and far-reaching programs. Conceived and created by Dr. Louise Cowan in collaboration with her husband, Dr. Donald Cowan, the Teachers Academy and the Principals Institute were founded on the premise that has only recently gained currency in our culture—that teachers matter. The Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture’s Education Forum is a multiday event held annually.

Nearly fifty years after his assassination in 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. continues to exert a powerful influence on the way we think and act in matters of civil rights in America. For more than ten years the MLK Symposium has convened a rich variety of voices, from “old lions” of the Civil Rights era who stood alongside Dr. King to contemporary figures who have found new ways of championing the ideal of true equality. In 2017 the Symposium will focus on “Race and Justice in America Today.”
