WELCOME TO THE 2024/25 SEASON OF THE DALLAS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Going into my fifth year of this musical partnership with the incredible musicians at the DSO, we have developed a distinctively “Dallas” sound, of which I am immensely proud. We are playing at a high artistic level, and I look forward to building upon that and sharing beautiful music with Dallas audiences in the upcoming season.

Each year we program the season with a range of works from across the repertoire that delight audiences and showcase our ensemble. This season brings back some of the most cherished works in classical music, including Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony, Elgar’s “Enigma” Variations, Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony and more. There is always a new perspective to be found in these pieces, and it is a joy to share them in the beautiful acoustics of the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center.

This season also features works that are new to Dallas audiences and newly commissioned works by contemporary composers telling the stories of today. Though Dallas has a history of the work of Bartók from its association with legendary conductor Antal Doráti, the DSO has never performed the composer’s The Wooden Prince. We will perform that work this fall. There has been a rediscovery of the work of American composer Julia Perry, and I will be delighted to share a performance of her Stabat Mater.

Commissioning and sharing new compositions are central to the DSO’s mission, and this upcoming season has noteworthy and up-and-coming composers’

work throughout. I am particularly excited to share the first orchestral work by Native American composer Raven Chacon. I became familiar with Chacon’s work, and right after we asked him to write for the DSO, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his Voiceless Mass Sophia Jani, the DSO’s Composer-In-Residence, will have the world premiere of a new work for orchestra, and we will present the world premiere of Sean Shepherd’s new concerto written for our principal wind players. Other noteworthy premieres and co-commissions include Andrew Norman’s Trombone Concerto, Arlene Sierra’s Kiskadee and A Lovesome Thing based on the music of Billy Strayhorn, a frequent collaborator of Duke Ellington.

We are also honored to welcome the world’s top artists to the Meyerson to perform with our orchestra. We will welcome back Hélène Grimaud, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Augustin Hadelich and Leonidas Kavakos, and we will introduce Dallas audiences to Francesca Dego (violin), Charles Yang (violin), Nelson Goerner (piano), Benjamin Grosvenor (piano), Sofia Fomina (soprano) and Catriona Morison (mezzo).

And, of course, this fall we will finally present Wagner’s full Ring Cycle for Dallas audiences. This project has been years in the making, and the event will culminate in a week-long series of concerts of the entire cycle the week of October 13, 2024. The Ring Cycle is one of the deepest and most complex musical works that has ever been written. Throughout the story, with beautiful music and beautiful text guiding you, you are transformed at the end. It will be an honor to lead this epic event here in Dallas.

Immerse yourself in powerful emotions as Edward Gardner, Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, leads the DSO in the first classical concert of the season. Tchaikovsky fills the bill in his Fourth Symphony with powerful brasses, whirlwinds of strings and poignant melancholy where he confesses, “there is not a single bar which I have not truly felt, and which is not an echo of my most intimate spiritual life…” Equally compelling is Stravinsky’s tragic love-triangle among puppets at a Russian Shrovetide fair, told in a brand-new musical language of complex rhythms, offbeat meters and edgy harmonies that will leave you positively enthralled.

It’s a harmonic convergence of distinguished women in music. DSO favorite Anne-Marie McDermott joins with Estonian conductor Anu Tali for Amy Beach’s Piano Concerto and Alisson Kruusmaa’s ethereal Arabesques. Elgar’s crowning achievement, Enigma Variations, hides an unsolved mystery that has puzzled music sleuths for more than a century: what is that Original Theme? No one has ever discovered it. But we do know that he’s portraying 14 friends, disguised in irresistible tunes and “inside jokes,” with the soaring heart of the work — the stirring “Nimrod” Variation — paying tribute to a beloved friend.

Gershwin’s Concerto in F Major is a concert favorite that speaks in America’s musical vernacular — jazz — and is the perfect vehicle for the showstopping talents of Jean-Yves Thibaudet. Internationally renowned conductor Juanjo Mena returns to lead the DSO’s firstever performance of Bartók’s The Wooden Prince, the stuff of fairytale denizens rendered through lyrical, sensuous and folksong-like music. The iconic Boléro: two short measures, repeated over a hypnotic, non-stop snare-drum beat, start softly, then increase in intensity, as combinations of instruments create ever richer sonorities and reach a spine-tingling climax.

BEETHOVEN Violin Concerto in D Major MOZART Symphony No. 41, “Jupiter”

Two favorites of classical music await you at this concert, masterfully led by Music Director Fabio Luisi. Fellow-Italian, violinist Francesca Dego, joins him and the DSO for Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, a magisterial creation of dramatic impact some violinists have dubbed their “Mount Everest.” Scaling this musical mountain lets performers reveal their emotional depth in lyrical passages and their technical mastery in high-voltage fireworks. Mozart’s regal “Jupiter” Symphony, aptly named for the king of the gods, with drums and trumpets lending a stately feel, set a crown upon the composer’s symphonic output.

A work of opulent orchestral colors and effects that tells a “fantastic” story, starring Hector Berlioz himself, besotted with a Shakespearian actress. His passion-propelled Symphonie fantastique follows the love-sick hero’s druginduced visions to a glittering ball, the march to the scaffold and a demonic Witches’ Sabbath with the Dies irae pounding out a hair-raising theme amid tumult. Giedrė Šlekytė “the embodiment of youthful energy, enthusiasm, and determination” (La scena musicale) makes her DSO debut leading Strauss’s tuneful Oboe Concerto, with Principal Oboe Erin Hannigan in the spotlight.

Dvořák’s New World Symphony

KRIS BOWERS For a Younger Self DVOŘÁK Symphony No. 9 in E minor, “From the New World”

Led by Austrian conductor Markus Poschner, Dvořák’s most-beloved symphony, the Ninth, beguiles you with cascades of hummable tunes, bold horn calls and suggestions of African and Native American melodies he heard during his American sojourn. But always within earshot is an expression of homesickness for his native Bohemia. Making his DSO debut, Charles Yang, member of the wildly popular string ensemble Time for Three, performs Kris Bowers’s For a Younger Self. This Concerto meant “finding a way to maintain balance and inner peace in this chaotic and troubling world,” the Emmy® Award and OSCAR®-winning composer says. Best known for his film scores The Green Book, Bridgerton, and King Richard, For My Younger Self is the genre-bending Black composer’s first concert work for orchestra.

A work of nearly symphonic proportions, Brahms’s Violin Concerto has been enthusiastically embraced by awestruck audiences for a century-and-a-half. As you listen to Augustin Hadelich’s tour de force interpretation, you will feel its tender lyricism, vigor, charm and gypsy folk rhythms. Then, from the soaring theme in the first movement of Bruckner’s most popular symphony, through the majestic finale, the vast soundscapes of this masterpiece, enriched by the composer’s hallmark brass sonorities (including four Wagner tubas, invented for his Ring operas) will envelop you with glorious harmonies and transport you to a world beyond time.

No other symphony has such instant recognition as Beethoven's Fifth. Rising from its four powerful opening chords, it follows a euphoric path from tragedy to triumph, from darkness into the light, uplifting your spirits on the journey. Fabio Luisi also leads the DSO and Concertmaster Alexander Kerr in Bruch’s romantic Violin Concerto, once described as “rich and seductive.” Opening the concert is the world premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning Native American composer, Raven Chacon’s first major work for orchestra. Championed by Fabio Luisi, this promises to be a grand event in our community and for the Dallas Symphony family.

SIBELIUS Symphony No. 6 in D minor

DURUFLÉ Requiem

In speaking of his Sixth Symphony, Sibelius said that “it is, above all, a poem,” and told his publisher that the music is like “pure, cold water.” You’ll sense that purity in the ecstatic string-playing that opens the work. As the symphony progresses it gains in emotional intensity before slowly fading away. Peace and calm of another kind prevail in Duruflé’s incandescent Requiem (featuring the Lay Family Concert Organ), which begins: “Eternal peace grant unto them, o Lord, and let the perpetual light shine upon them.” It’s not a rafter-shaking Requiem, but one whose music speaks of consolation and acceptance. Experience this unique choral event with Guest Conductor Matthew Halls.

Arguably one of the hardest-to-master Piano Concertos, Rachmaninoff’s Third starts quietly, then unleashes an astonishing torrent of notes and hurtles to a jaw-dropping conclusion. In-between you’ll hear echoes of Slavic melancholy, lush themes and page upon page of passionate and virtuosic music-making. The delightful Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks about the mischief-maker we can’t help but like, despite — or because of — the tricks he plays on deserving victims. Rounding out the evening are DSOcommissioned works by two eminent female composers, Sophia Jani, the DSO’s Composer-in-Residence and American Arlene Sierra.

Two beloved Romantic works grace this concert program. Acclaimed French pianist Hélène Grimaud solos in Robert Schumann’s masterpiece — a sublime amalgam of rapture and fire, premiered by the composer’s wife Clara who championed it throughout her career. Brahms’s impassioned Fourth is the pinnacle of his symphonic output. The intensity of this autumnal work is illuminated by an inner radiance that will touch your heart with its deep emotions. Siphokazi Molteno “a mezzo with a knockout coloratura” (The Guardian) lends her stunning voice to African American composer Julia Perry’s Stabat Mater, the haunting lament of Jesus’s mother at the cross.

SIBELIUS Symphony No. 3 in C Major

Principal Harp Emily Levin is front and center for Henriette Renié’s gorgeous Concerto. Widely recognized for his dual career, John Storgårds both plays and conducts Beethoven’s composition of poignant lyricism and songlike eloquence as well as Keith Jarrett’s Elegy, which pushes the boundaries of what we think of as “classical.” In Sibelius’s Third Symphony, listen for his new approach to symphonic writing — “the crystallization of ideas from chaos,” he calls it, where fragments of melodies slowly begin to coalesce as the music proceeds, gathering energy and ending in a glorious C Major chord.

It starts with a bassoon solo, and before long there is a profusion of twitters, plucked strings and pounding of pagan drums… like all manner of life forms breaking through the frozen crust of the Russian landscape as pulsing rhythms and primitive rituals proclaim the veneration of spring. It’s The Rite of Spring, the iconic work that changed classical music forever and continues to be a thrilling, visceral experience. Abandon yourself to its raw energy and revel in its electrifying intensity as Aziz Shokhakimov, Music Director of Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, guest conducts the DSO. Jörgen van Rijen solos in the US premiere of a concerto by Andrew Norman, praised by the Boston Globe for his “staggering imagination.” Opening the concert, Rimsky-Korsakov dazzles you with colorful evocations of Spain.

Jaap van Zweden returns to Dallas for Shostakovich’s eloquent Fifth Symphony. Despite its grandeur and optimistic façade — huge climaxes, triumphant marches, exhilarating brass and percussion — a profound sadness cries out in the third movement, the spiritual center of the work. Yet, one critic says, “some shadow of Shostakovich’s indomitable spirit had seeped, surreptitiously, into the souls of attentive listeners.” Conrad Tao “ferociously talented” (TimeOut New York) joins our Conductor Laureate and the orchestra for Mozart’s elegant Piano Concerto No. 17. Opening the concert is Prokofiev’s charming Haydn-inspired “Classical” Symphony.

Inspired by seeing the ruins and moors of Scotland, and especially Mary Queen of Scots’s Palace of Holyroodhouse on a walking tour, Mendelssohn created his aptly named Third Symphony. Its pages are filled with both dark, meditative strains, as well as lively and spirited passages, but its emotional heart beats in the beautiful, stately Adagio. Our principal winds gather for the world premiere of a concerto commissioned for them by the DSO from one of the most sought-after American composers, Sean Shepherd, praised for possessing “a fantastic gift for orchestral color.” (The New York Times)

SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 9 in E-flat Major

Benjamin Grosvenor “commands the stage with aristocratic ease.” (The New York Times) Grosvenor is the brilliant soloist for Beethoven’s final piano concerto, “Emperor.” The nickname reflects the temperament of the masterpiece, its majesty and nobility — a crowning achievement, indeed. The evening concludes with Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony, whose number alone would terrify the average composer with its inevitable comparison to Beethoven’s Ninth. But instead of the generally expected grandiose, no-holds-barred praise for Stalin’s World War II victory, the composer’s irreverent, sardonic sense of humor delivered a mocking little number!

World-renowned violinist Leonidas Kavakos interprets Shostakovich’s Concerto, whose sonorities range from quiet contemplation to the most spectacular cadenza you’re ever likely to witness to a frenzied finale, guaranteed to leave you amazed. Then, from two out-of-the-blue chords to exhilarating finale, the “Eroica’s” majesty and grandeur, extraordinary scope, and bold harmonies rise to a triumphant climax and proclaim that a new era in music has begun. Dallas-based composer Kyle Gann “tinkered” with one of his favorite Charles Ives pieces (which he lamented as being too brief) and “stretched it out,” as he says, resulting in his Serenity Meditation (after Ives)

MAHLER Symphony No. 2 in C minor, “Resurrection”

“What is life and what is death? Why did you live? Why did you suffer?… Do our life and death have a meaning?... Whoever hears this call must give a reply. And this reply I give in my last movement.” Thus Mahler guides us to the meaning of his stirring Second Symphony, a work with a beautiful, consoling message. The Finale is a combination of thunderous, apocalyptic outbursts, brass fanfares heard off stage, as well as quieter moments; and then, out of nowhere, a hushed chorus intones the ecstatic Resurrection Ode, as solo voices soar, singing of forgiveness, divine compassion and eternal life: “You shall rise again, rise again/My heart, in an instant./What you have conquered/Shall carry you to God!” Whatever your concept of heaven, this is paradise in music.

In Die Walküre, Wagner leaves the realm of the gods and traces the story of the king of the gods, Wotan’s mortal children and the warrior-maid Brünnhilde. The most well-loved opera of the tetralogy, it encompasses some of its most beautiful music: impassioned expressions of love; Wotan’s farewell to his beloved child Brünnhilde; the Magic Fire Music as he places her on a mountain surrounded by fire; and, of course, The Ride of the Valkyries, the rousing battle cry of the Valkyrie sisters riding their airborne steeds and carrying fallen soldiers to Valhalla (the sound track of Apocalypse Now fixed The Ride’s place in popular culture).
