DAMAGED GOODS ZINE

{ Pop } .15 Welcome to the second edition of halves. For this issue we took a gamble and made an excursion into the wilderness, spending a week in a remote west coast village. The community has a permanent population of 15 people and 234 animals, and we had more interaction with wildlife than with humans. We had no expectations of wave quality, but found a bunch a fun surf. Cover Photo Sam Willis & the locals. Photos: Rambo Estrada

Sam Willis . Aka { Sanga }

//

“Sanga” is the ultimate guy to take on a surf trip. He’ll keep the crew laughing and took on the role as te whipping up 3 amazing meals a day. He was pretty handy when it came time to hit the water too. Photo

Justin Quirk . Aka { The Cabo Prince }

//

Justin Quirk was taking a New Zealand vacation away from his Mexican abode in Cabo San Lucas. Although the night life may not have compared to spring break, sipping a few sunset Coronas after surfing fun deserted waves certainly made up for it. Photos: Rambo Estrada

{

On the first day of our trip when we rushed out to surf this wave in front of our joint, we were politely informed (with a megaphone) that the forward dunes were in-fact a bird sanctuary for nesting dotterels, lets hope they stay untouched for many years to come. Photos: Rambo Estrada

{

Luke Cederman had just spent a week working for Waikato Council conducting a survey at the Raglan dump. Now the tables were turned and once he hit the water all eyes were on him. Photo: Rambo Estrada

This place was pretty remote. There was no cellphone coverage or internet. Bummer because this is one heck of an instagram moment. Photo: Rambo Estrada

We were over an hour away from civilisation. Everything was BYO including food, fuel and cold beer.

We’re not sure what this beach was called but after a tip-off from a couple of local fishermen we crossed the estuary and scaled the dunes to discover this river bar left.

Round here Luke we call those town clothes.Photos: Rambo Estrada

After a couple of days surfing relentless lefts, Sanga snuck off down the beach and found himself some frontside action. Photo: Rambo Estrada

{

One evening our host Trevor threw a BBQ and invited the 14 other locals in the town. One bloke was chatting to Luke’s girlfriend Geraldene and busted out the impressive line “yeah your boyfriend might be able to surf good but I can shear a sheep in 14 seconds” Photos: Rambo Estrada

//

Trevor told us about an amazing waterfall inland. Although Rambo had fear’s of Deliverance on his mind he trecked in late at night to capture this image.

Sanga called Raglan home for a good portion of his mis-spent youth. The guy sure knows what to do on a walled left hander.

{5’8 } Luke only brought one surfboard, a 5’8” fish. Watch the accompanying video clip (Click here to watch video ) and you’ll see he had no problem making that thing work in all conditions. Photo: Rambo Estrada

//

Justin only brought one wetsuit to New Zealand. Unfortunately it was a full steamer.

{

The local wildlife seemed to be free to wander the streets, we bro’d down with spike the boar, after bribing him with muesli he was happy to ham it up for the camera. Photos :Rambo Estrada

// Main image. We were told by the only local surfer that on it’s day this river bar was the premium wave in the area. // Top right. All over the rocks there were fossils that were apparently 200 million years old. // Bottom right. Cat & Justin heading for one last surf out front. Photos: Rambo Estrada

// Thistles, puplic enemy number one for Sanga.

We rescued Sanga from T irau where he’s been working on his sisters farm chipping thistles for the last month. He was pretty happy to be back on the coast and put in more water time than anyone. Surf Shots - Jereme Aubertin. Portrait: Rambo Estrada

Dishes at the house each day were decided by a card game. Unfortunately Luke’s surfing prowess didn’t translate to the card table and after losing on multiple occasions Luke threw his toys leaving his poor girlfriend Geraldene to do his duty. Photos: Rambo Estrada

For 5 days we didn’t share the line-up with a single other surfer. Photos: Rambo Estrada

The weather on this trip was amazing. It’d get so hot during the day that the arvos would blow out, but each evening on dusk it’d swing back offshore. Sam managed to sniff out a rare tube on dusk.

{

Luke thought he’d found a moa, but it turned out just to be an ostrich. The landscape was amazing, rolling hills as far as the eye could see : Photos: Rambo Estrada

The locals reckon this tunnel is over 100 years old, it was cut with picks and shovels through the rock to allow stock access along the remote beach to a nearby station. Certainly made our lives easier too. Sam frontside boost. Photos: Rambo Estrada

Luke was supposed to be drop his girlfriend 2 hours away at the nearest bus station but she decided she couldn’t leave the beautiful area and decided to stay for the remainder of the trip. This worked out well as otherwise Luke would have missed the best session we had. He repaid her by getting her to do the dishes when he lost at cards again. Photo: Rambo Estrada
