Cave Dwelling_ Arc 511 / Design Studio I Prof. Ted Essex, CT
How do you create a luxurious shelter on a hill without making the separation of structure and nature so noticeable? The cave house is the answer to this matter. This elegant and pure structure is the combination of elegance and natural sheltering. The Cave House is a modern shelter guest house design for architect Rem Koolhaas. Koolhaas loves the idea of shared social spaces. The cave house is a combination of inside and outside social spaces in all three floors. There is only one private space which is the bedrooms and their share bathroom. Before becoming an architect, Koolhaas was a filmmaker. Knowing this, his office space located in the first floor possesses a pattern of forced thin view
slots that act as movie frames of the main view. When you are walking through this space towards the south facade you see through the tight frames a little piece of the main picture. This walkable experience prepares your eye for the breath taking view you will encounter at the end of the other wall. The idea of the cave house evolved from the breath taking view which can be seen from the Towers House. The house was design so that the same view can be experience from different environments at each level of the house. The view can also be seen from inside of the house and the outside patios located on the first and second floor. The next obstacle was to attain the same view as the towers house
without interrupting it. Since the main house is located on the top of the hill, the cave house building was located right off the hill edge where it starts to drop. To make the structure part of environment, the building protrudes off the hill, as if it was part of the hill. The flat green roofs help express the growth of the building from nature itself. In addition to the green roofs, the wood walls, big windows on the south facade and the open patios help complete the connection between structure and nature. The cave house is a simple and playful structure that shouts purity by the use of its organization and simple geometry.
