How did I start? I have graduated in 2011 with a master degree in Advanced Studies in Architecture, with the thesis on the theme of building rehabilitation. What have I been doing? During the following 3 years, I have worked on international offices in Portugal (studio Ressano Garcia Architects, in Lisbon), France (WONK architectes, in Lille), and Japan (Sou Fujimoto Architects, in Tokyo). Did I get any awards? In 2008, I won my first award, with 4th place in a students competition. Later in 2011 with the 3rd prize on the contest “Archinews Stand Concept - Tektónica”, in 2013 with the 2nd prize on the ideas contest “Desafios Urbanos ‘12”, and in 2014 the 1st prize in a competition to produce the cover of five editions of the magazine from the Portuguese Architects Organization. And what am I up to now? Currently, I divide my professional activity between practice in an architecture studio in Lisbon and the Ph.D. in the field of Digital Architecture at ISCTE. Besides that, I’m curator and research manager for the online platform Non Architecture, while also writing for different international magazines on architecture and design. Since 2018 I’m an assistant producer at the Arquiteturas Film Festival. Is there anything left to say? I have also gained experience Teaching Architecture in China along with other amazing adventures. Take a look at my cv and portfolio. And let’s talk!

transposition of gardens to the rooftops of the buildings to rebuild

connections between gardens

accesses

The main strategy consists on enrich the neighborhood with new livelihoods for the locals. The intervention is phased: First we analyze the buildings in bad condition and / or in risk of collapse. Second we apply the necessary measures to recover these buildings. And third, we install the new urban gardens on the rooftops, creating a grid on top of the existing buildings. Here the gardens have conditions to grow and develop in order to expand to more rooftops inside and outside the neighborhood.

in collaboration with: bruno salgueiro | joana melo | joão carvalho

assembling the sidewalls

assembling the front walls and all the equipment inside

As a starting point there was two main concerns: the ecological component and the formal configuration. By reusing cardboard tubes, we model the space along a smooth and continuous skin. The skin is structure, crossing the space and involving the stand, and simultaneously interacts with the visitors on a visual level. We attempted to insert a more conceptual and visual component, that would promote the relationship exterior / interior through a membrane-skin-structure which unifies the space.

in collaboration with gonçalo silva

We considered the soap bubble the materialization of the magical colors from an aurora borealis, through its reflection on the surface of the building. The construction of the bubble is based on the metaball logic inspired by geodesic structures of Buckminster Fuller and Otto Frey. The building configuration allowed us to connect it with the surrounding nature, without being invasive. Inspired by the wooden houses of the north, the internal structures were created following a minimization process.

re.use

re.connect

This project is a mutation of the existing building. Some elements were removed, others remained, strengthening the link between past and future. As a result, we have two independent buildings. The first building covers an area of studios for artistic production, creating a dichotomy between the museum that tells the industrial processes and the studios where they face new methods. The second building is an open space to receive multiple functions, such as performances and other leisure activities.

electromagnetic connections

A prison is a place for rehabilitation and cerebral transformation. When located on the ocean, it does not need conventional walls, prisoners are kept arrested by the water around it. The design is based on internal structure of the brain, the electromagnetic connections that occur inside it, become the inspiration for the architectural space. The perception of the hostile environment of the ocean, enhances a poetic dimension of life, only possible to produce change in the mind and stimulate self healing on a very delicate way.

traditional arab pathern - windows and solar panels

The Girih Tower set in the waterfront, away from dense areas, is divided into 3 volumes to strengthen the expected verticality and to impose its proportions on a very competitive city skyline. The project is based on a series of sustainable-oriented principles that throughout centuries enabled local inhabitants to survive the inconvenient, tropical desert climate. However, it poses a question about the traditional way of perceiving a tower and weather it is supposed to look alike from every side.

In São Paulo, Brazil, a new house is born. Located in a lot on the south side of the city, next to a large preservated area of rainforest, surrounded by a tropical landscape. After several studies, we have developed three proposals. The three options for this house go in different directions, but all of them have scalings, cutouts, solids, voids, and apprehend the surrounding nature.

2014 5 covers for ba magazine photography

competition | 1st place

To celebrate 22 years of publications, the portuguese architects association opened a photography competition for the cover of 5 magazine editions. The serie titled “tools” was the selected. Here I translate a “staging” office, poetizing the professional practice and its objects not limited to mold “moment”’. The office life is here organized, reinterpreted, mediated and communicated.

What is it? Is it a market? A sports arena? A square? A food court? A movie theater? Or maybe a performance hall? A bit of everything. Places do not possess singular, but multiple and contested identities. Regardless of the function, it’s a theater ideal for social action and a shared space for the community.

The Courtyard Theatre is an extension to the existing The Other Place – the RSC’s studio theatre – which was transformed to provide all front-of-house facilities. The external walls are built of folded ‘Corten A’ steel sheets, helping to create a sound-proof enclosure to meet high acoustic requirements. This recyclable material was chosen for its naturally weathering no-maintenance surface and warm red colour which blends with the brick and tile of the surrounding buildings. The interior of the walls and seat backs were of golden ply, and the red auditorium seating ‘floated’ inside while surrounding the thrust stage.

13/19 By reusing the available steel structures, simply by wrapping them with a rigid support, a hierarchical pathway is created that explores an organic feeling of the perception of the expository content. Thus creating various expository “pockets” that reflect different “times” or spatial emphases. Simultaneously, a wide circulation corridor runs through the entire space, which is destined for a more meditative and contemplative end.

2016 castelo branco urban park

office practice

while collaborating at the office noz arquitectura

An urban park should provide a “break” in the urban space by promoting contact with nature without having to travel outside the city. however, its urban essence should also allow an ‘active participation’ in the life of the city through a comprehensive, diversified and complementary program. Starting from the construction of a necessarily small but biodiverse and sustainable ecosystem, the design of the urban park seeks to explore the most interesting situations of a safe and comfortable interface between city and nature.

In London a new tower rises, dancing in the streets. Based on a podium, it offers a close relation between the street level and the terraced cafés/restaurants and shops. The sinuous footprint of the building allows the pedestrians to flow along the site and increases the public interaction.

16/19 A house extention in London. It is a contrast on the typical london construcion, by presenting a modern and clean shape, with round corners and wood stripes. The idea of creating an envelope/skin that invilves the intervention, allows the facade to open to the garden when necessary and creates an “in between” space for the habitants.

2017 são paulo biennale exhibition

competition

in collaboration with: ana luisa silva and fabiano lins

With the title “The utopian view of the city”, the proposal was for a structure to be assembled in a temporary exhibition. Using the vision, a series of suspended boxes are built, that will “transport” the public to a utopian imaginary of the city of São Paulo. The inner faces of the boxes will be the support for the exhibition material. To see each project, the viewer has to stick his head through the underside of the box base. This configuration will isolate the viewer from the surroundings, creating a unique and individual experience with the work presented. There is no relation between the objects and the exhibition space. Each box will present a distinct utopian project, allowing its multiplication by different spaces.

Just as the shutter of a camera is a mechanism that opens and closes, controlling the exposure time of the film in order to record an image, the origami system of this photobook reproduces this concept, giving a new and exciting dimension to the photobook. This allows the audience to unfold the pages and reveal the memories recorded in the film.
