COP3 - Preliminary Research Project Proposal

Possible Research question (starting point) Question 6: To what extent has Illustration constructed our understanding or view of historical events and perceptions of truth? Specific genera's I’m interested in: gender, society, portraiture Possible Related questions – • how has the representation of women in illustration changed with the historical and current perceptions of gender roles? • How have changing gender roles reflected on the representation of women in illustration/portraiture? • Historically, how has the depiction of women changed throughout the course of illustration? •

To what extend have historical and cultural contexts reflected on the depiction of people in illustration and portraiture?

Interests in proposed area INITIALLY I thought I look at gender because I’d explored it quite a bit in regards to advertising and found that there was a lot of sources to work from, generally a topic that has a lot of coverage. I wanted to re-visit it in the form of female representation in illustration because I only really touched on that area, and it also leans to my personal illustrative interests such as portraiture and character design. In regards to my own illustrative practice, I’d like to look at maybe portraiture or character design. The depiction of people. These are area’s I’m personally interested in persuing with this project.

Case Studies: Laura Callaghan

Laura Callaghan. 2017. Saskia Martini.

Laura Callaghan. 2016. Every Job Is A Self Portrait.

Laura Callaghan. 2017. Saskia Vase.

Laura Callahan is an illustrator who depicts quite exclusively women, typically curvier women – there’s definitely an aesthetic or a particular look she sticks to. This could be seen as a stand against the normal beauty standards that currently exist in our western culture whilst at the same time referencing classical era paintings of women. Her illustration is always very current & fashion forward, very 21 st centuary.
