Five things Dana Point should know this week City Council Tables Short Term Rentals for Second Time THE LATEST: After nearly two hours of discussion, the Dana Point City Council tabled a second reading of an ordinance that would allow short term rentals in all zoning districts where residential uses are allowed.

This is the second time the Council has tabled the second reading so they could get more input from the residents.

On Tuesday night, Councilman Scott Schoeffel proposed the Council wait until a September meeting to discuss short-term rentals with the residents. The Council voted 4-1 in favor of tabling the ordinance with Mayor Pro Tem Richard Viczorek dissenting.

The Council introduced a first reading of the ordinance in December 2013, followed by a second reading January 2014 and authorizing the staff to submit the proposed Local Coastal Program Amendment to the California Coastal Commission for its approval and certification. Later that month it was submitted to the commission.

On March 20, 2015, after the commission requested additional information from the city, the commission deemed the LCP amendment complete. In April 2016, the commission conducted a hearing and approved the city’s LCPA with suggested modifications. The council introduced the first reading with the modifications at the May 17 meeting.

Part of the modifications include putting the city’s municipal code chapter 5.38, or the short-term rental permits, into the city’s local coastal program “so that any future amendments to the chapter 5.28 that limit or prohibit short term rentals in the coastal zone be submitted to the coastal commission as a local coastal plan amendment.”

A couple of the Council members did not agree with this, stating that since it’s a new ordinance it may need to be adjusted.

Councilman Richard Viczorek stated the way the ordinance was written, he would not be able to vote in favor of it.

“At first I was for it,” Viczorek said and added some benefits for the residents who are renting their homes would be able to bring in an extra income, the shortterm renters in town would help the local Dana Point Times July 22-28, 2016

businesses and it would increase the city revenue.

But, Viczorek said the negatives from the city’s residents started to change his mind.

“If we allow this, we’re opening the door to Coastal Commission, which is a state agency, to come in and tell us we can never get rid of this,” Viczorek said.

WHAT’S NEXT: Staff advised the Council that the response would need to be back to the commission within six months, making the deadline Oct. 14. The ordinance will be discussed again during the council’s Sept. 20 meeting. The next regularly scheduled meeting is Tuesday, Aug. 2 at 6 p.m. —Kristina Pritchett

City Council Approves Use of Falconer at Monarch Beach THE LATEST: City Council approved a resolution that would allow the county to bring in a falconer at Monarch Beach to aid with the bird population near Salt Creek Outfall on Tuesday.

The resolution comes after a nonprofit environmental organization listed the area as a “beach bummer” last month. It will allow the county to bring in the falconer who has successfully managed the bird population at San Clemente’s Poche Beach and the county landfill.

In June, Heal the Bay listed the beach as a “beach bummer” due to the lower water quality that was tested. The city stated the lower results were due to the testing site being moved and the amount of birds that flock to the area.

The site is home to the Salt Creek Ozone Treatment Facility that treats dry weather runoff. The facility treats the water before it returns it to the ocean, but before it hits the ocean the water hits the scour pond. The scour pond is where the testing is now being done, where previously it was done 25 yards out.

The city has been working with Amec Foster Wheeler Environment & Infrastructure, Inc. to determine the cause of the recent exceedances. According to the city, Amec has advised that the cause is the bird population on the beach.

“So, although the water has been thoroughly treated with ozone at the facility at the beach’s edge, as the creek crosses the beach, a pond forms before it reaches the ocean,” the staff report states.

Previously, the city has stated they would look for ways to improve the issue, but at the time they didn’t have a plan in place.

During Tuesday night’s meeting, the Council approved the item during consent calendar.

CUSD Pursues $889 Million Bond Measure sans Rancho Mission Viejo THE LATEST: The Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees further refined its strategy for pursuing an $889 million general obligation bond at the board’s July 13 meeting, with the majority of trustees voting to create a districtwide School Facilities Improvement District (SFID) that excludes Rancho Mission Viejo. The board voted 6-1, with Trustee Jim Reardon dissenting, to approve a resolution of intent to form the SFID. If approved by voters in November, all residents within that SFID will be taxed a maximum of $43 per $100,000 of assessed value of their homes.

The board also voted on July 13 to table a second resolution calling for an SFID exclusively for the Rancho Mission Viejo area, with trustees saying that the district’s current needs should be their focus before funding future needs of new schools. That means the only school currently excluded from the approved districtwide SFID would be Esencia Elementary School, planned in Rancho Mission Viejo with a fall 2018 opening.

Over the last several months, the board has discussed placing an $889 million

bond measure on the Nov. 8 general election ballot, which would be used to leverage state funds and pay for more than $800 million of deferred maintenance of district facilities.

In Dana Point, that includes potential improvements for elementary schools and an estimated $72.8 million in enhancements for Dana Hills High School alone, which is 43 years old. DHHS projects currently listed in the district’s Facilities Master Plan include a new performing arts center, new classroom building, new parking, a remodel/expansion of student services, multipurpose room remodel/expansion, swimming pool modernization, a new library media center, ADA accessible stadium bleachers and a new auxiliary physical education facility.

Trustees have debated back and forth over whether to pursue smaller regional bonds, a districtwide bond or an SFID with areas carved out, such as Rancho Mission Viejo. Some trustees have noted that after speaking with constituents, they felt a single bond was the clearer, more transparent choice versus potentially confusing residents with six SFIDs. Other trustees have argued that smaller regional bonds would appeal to residents who don’t feel connected to the needs of other communities and schools, and would allow a city to vote no on its own bond without limiting other cities’ access to funds. Some residents at recent board meetings have said they wouldn’t support the bond measure due to issues such as (Cont. on page 5) www.danapointtimes.com

Others have said they want the opportunity to vote on funding future improvements at their children’s schools.

Carolyn Cavecche, President and CEO of the Orange County Taxpayers Association, addressed the board at its July 20 meeting, saying that the district’s bond measure meets most of the association’s criteria, with the exception of a specific list of projects the board is committed to using the bond’s revenue on. Several trustees voiced concerns over the lack of a detailed project list, while Trustees Amy Hanacek and Lynn Hatton-Hodson said they felt that it’s acceptable to finalize possible projects after the bond is passed, noting that the election in November may also shift the priorities of the board.

WHAT’S NEXT: The deadline for placing a bond measure on the November ballot is Aug. 12, and the board is scheduled to vote on the measure at its regularly scheduled Aug. 10 meeting. Two-thirds of the board—five trustees—must approve the measure.

South Coast Water District Approves Additional Funds for San Juan Creek Project THE LATEST: The South Coast Water District approved an authorization of $22,500 for additional engineering and permitting services regarding the San Juan Creek boat and RV storage project during its July 14 board of directors meeting.

The additional funds, according to the district, will be used to complete additional permitting services related to revisions of the habitat mitigation swales’ locations based on the location of the proposed Doheny Ocean Desalination Project.

“As we went through a Doheny Desalination process, we realized there would be some potential conflicts with the desal plant and the mitigation swales,” said Chief Eningeer Rick Shintaku. “So we had the designer move the swales back into lot B.” Shintaku said this would decrease the amount of parking spaces by 10.

Andrew Brunhart, General Manager for the district, said this is the fourth amendment to the consulting agreement.

“We’ve worked on this particular item since October 2013,” Brunhart said during the meeting.

In March 2014, the district awarded a consulting services agreement to Tetra Tech for $324,294 for engineering design services associated with the development of the boat and RV storage facilities.

According to the staff report, the original agreement cost $324,394, with the approval of the fourth amendment; the total cost is now $483,357. Director Bill Green commented on the matter, and added that it was a lot of money.

President Wayne Rayfield stated since the work needed to be done anyway, and could potentially cost more if the board waited, he would be in favor of passing the amendment.

Director Dennis Edrman, who voted against the amendment, stated he was concerned with the project.

“I’ve expressed my concern previously that this project falls outside the mission of South Coast Water District,” Erdman said.

“I’m not in favor of continuing to support expenditures on engineering costs, even if it results in some delay in [the Lot B] project.”

Directors Dennis Erdman and Dick Dietmeier both voted against the amendment, resulting in a 3-2 vote.

Dana Point Residents Begin Election Process THE LATEST: As of Wednesday evening, two Dana Point residents have pulled election paperwork for the November election, city officials said.

According to City Clerk Kathy Ward, Penny Maynard and Paul Wyatt have pulled paperwork to begin the process of running in the November election.

Councilmen Carlos Olvera and Scott Schoeffel’s seats are up for the general election. Since Schoeffel has served two terms, he will not be able to run again. Olvera has only served one term, and would be able to re-run for his seat.

Candidates must be registered voters of the city of Dana Point at the time nomination papers are issued. Candidates may be nominated by registered voters between July 18 and until 5 p.m. on Aug. 12. Candidate information packets and nomination papers may be obtained from the City Clerk’s office at Dana Point City Hall.

If any incumbent has not filed nomination papers by Friday, Aug. 12, at 5 p.m., the nomination period will be extended to Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 5:30 p.m.

English Rose Beauty Studio Welcomed to City with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony English Rose Beauty Studio was officially welcomed into Dana Point on Monday afternoon during a ribbon cutting ceremony, held by the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce.

James and Beverley Lewis, owners of the studio, wanted to open a business that offered more than just hair cutting and styling.

“We’re not just a hair salon; we pride ourselves on providing all of the beauty treatments,” James Lewis said.

The studio also offers nail services, skin care services using state-of-the-art techniques from England, as well as a makeup service. They also sell jewelry and fashion accessories.

“We have a lot to be proud of,” Lewis said.

Beverly Lewis said she’s excited to be in the city, and start working with Dana Point residents.

Family Seeks Answers after Son Dies in Hit-andRun Accident Family members continue to post signs, asking for any information about a hit-and-run accident that left an Aliso Viejo man dead.

Previously, police said they responded to the intersection around 4:15 a.m. where they saw Stewart in the road. They say they believe the accident occurred between 3:30 and 4:15 a.m.

Family members, friends and members of the community have been hanging up fliers around the area where the accident occurred, hoping someone will go to the police with information.

“I have fliers in my car,” said Laura Stewart, Cole’s mom. “I take them everywhere and hang them wherever I can.”

Stewart said they’re continuing to work with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, but every day is rough for their family.

“It’s really difficult not knowing what happened,” Stewart said. “We’re a very close family, and we are just grieving horribly. We will miss him every day, every moment for the rest of our lives.”

Stewart said the family has lived in Aliso Viejo for more than 20 years, and the loss of Cole is not just affecting her family.

“Everyone who knew him, loved him,” Stewart said. “No one will ever be the same.”

Letters to the Editor WALKING DOWN MEMORY LANE PAUL FIEBERG, Dana Point

Way to go Dana Point! Sunday’s Classic Car exhibit was in a word….terrific…on several levels. Seeing the classic masterpiece examples of what automobiles used to look like when each automaker would design a signature look for their company rather than merely copying one another is a rare treat these days. The craftsmanship on exhibit yesterday showed creativity, attention to detail and devotion to something worthwhile.

Lastly, the exhibit brought back something sorely missing in today’s hurry up and wait lifestyle we’ve created for America, i.e. conversation. People were there to see the cars and the owners of the cars were actually talking with one another. The proud owners standing by each car added to the overall experience and were more than friendly when asked questions they undoubtedly have heard hundreds of times before. Each history they shared was unique and demonstrated

their commitment to excellence.

I received my weekly Dana Point Times this Friday and was enjoying it with my morning coffee. I spotted a picture of a VW van with a DP sticker next to the left taillight. As I read the article of Mr. Randy Moore, your June Contest Winner, I found the last puzzle piece.

Driving around town, I see DP and SC stickers on various vehicles and never knew where to find one (the puzzle). I learned it is a "bumper magnet", so cool!

I enjoyed the article of Mr. Moore, his wife, and the Coach House first date and first kiss. Like Mr. Moore and other locals, I too would like to show my DP Pride if I could receive a couple of bumper magnets.

One for my wife of almost 37 years this October and one for my old truck, I would appreciate it very much.

'm delighted to be attending the Republican National Convention in Cleveland as a California state at-large delegate for Donald Trump.

This convention has 172 delegates and 169 alternates from California, which is the largest single delegation at the RNC. Delegates in our state are selected by the Presidential candidate they support to either represent one of our 53 Congressional districts—from which three delegates are elected if the Presidential candidate wins that district—or as one of 10 statewide at-large delegates, if the candidate wins statewide. Since Donald Trump won California's primary overwhelmingly, with over 74 percent, he won all the delegates at stake.

Each delegate pays their own expenses to attend the convention, and the RNC arranges hotels in the convention city to fit the state delegation. When delegates are seated they are treated to front row seats, as the California delegation, along with Donald Trump's New York delegation.

I am the only delegate who lives in Dana Point, but there are three other delegates representing our same Congressional district including Congressman Darrell Issa, an old friend whom I met with on the first day as we gathered our floor credentials.

Darrell is originally from Cleveland and we chatted about that.

This is my fourth Republican National Convention. As a young man in 1976, I served as a Reagan delegate representing an Orange County congressional district.

In 1976, the convention was in Kansas City and Reagan was challenging President Gerald Ford. Reagan lost a close one, but then went on to win in Detroit in 1980 where I served as a volunteer aide to the delegation. I also attended the 1984 convention in Dallas as a member of the Reagan Administration by then.

Especially at this time of domestic and international crisis, it is a great privilege to be able to participate again in this most democratic of processes, electing our next President.

At the Movies: These Ghosts Are a Bit of a Bust

t’s a tale as old as time (or as old as the 1980s, to be more realistic): a Hollywood studio chooses to revisit an original idea from a long time ago rather than green-light a new, unique concept. Seven years ago, it was the Star Trek reboot. Last year, it was Star Wars. And right now, it’s finally Ghostbusters. But this time, comedy filmmaker Paul Feig is giving us a genderswapped remake. With a good cast and interesting spin, is it actually good?

teaching job, Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) reunites with her old friend, colleague and fellow paranormal believer Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) to explore and experiment with engineer Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon). They start with successfully proving a famous house is haunted and then quickly come up with the idea to become professional “ghostbusters.”

Leslie Jones co-stars as the eventual fourth ’buster. I’m not going to comment on all of the gender politics that have made this film’s marketing and press tour

so polarizing because I think everything that has to be said already has been by now. I can say that Feig and company have made much smoother and entertaining films with Bridesmaids (2011) and Spy (2015). Ghostbusters has stale writing, sloppy editing and a weak villain to boot.

One good thing I can add is that Wiig gives probably her best, natural lead performance to date since Bridesmaids, but it is wasted with a rushed product.

Unless you’re a diehard fan of this comedy group, you’d be better off re-watching the original. DP

On Stage at the Coach House: Anuhea

B

orn an island girl of Maui, Rylee Anuheake’alaokalokelani Jenkins, better known as Anuhea, has rocked reggae’s world for the better.

Starting at a boarding school, Anuhea showcased her talents as she taught herself how to play guitar and write her own songs.

“We would print out guitar chords to Bob Marley and Jack Johnson songs at school, then skip water polo practice to go back to the dorms and jam them,” Anuhea wrote on her website. “Once I got the basic idea of guitar, I then started writing my own songs.”

As she entered college, studying film at Chapman University, Anuhea realized her passion for music. After a year at Chapman, she left the university and traveled to Australia. She then came back to the islands to play in small coffee shops until she put a band together with friends.

Starting on her own, she marketed herself and acted as her own manager. By taking recordings from a live taping for a public radio station, Anuhea created her first demo CD titled “Rough Cuts.” This album then got discovered by a manager and record label co-owner named Warren

Since the group’s inception, Anuhea and her band have played with many well-known artists including Al Green, Babyface, Bruno Mars, Jack Johnson, Ziggy Marley and SOJA. Anuhea will be playing at The Coach House on Thursday, Aug. 4. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show begins at 8 p.m.

A Family Affair: A Health Situation Brought City Business Owners Closer to Foundation, Each Other

J

une 10, 1994 is a day that the Scognamiglio family will never forget. It was the day that their oldest child, Lisa, was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Since then, the family has gone to multiple doctors’ appointments, therapy sessions, and waited countless hours as Lisa has had a number of surgeries and MRI’s.

“My life was just appointments,” Jill said.

It all started when Lisa complained of an earache, but the doctors said it was nothing and would send her home with antibiotics. This continued for a couple of weeks until Lisa fell down at school.

“I got a call from her school saying I had to go pick her up because she kept falling down,” Enzo said. “She was disoriented; one of her eyes kept looking up while the other looked down.”

One doctor began to do neurological tests on her and told them Lisa needed to be admitted to Mission Hospital right away.

And then they heard the news.

“I was feeling chaos, confusion, loss of control,” Enzo said. “I was ignorant. I didn’t know what a brain tumor was, mind you this was 25 years ago. [I thought] she’s 4 and a half, that’s impossible. They tell you your child has a brain tumor and you have 50-50 chance of survival. You don’t understand what that means.”

Lisa said she doesn’t remember the diagnosis day and doesn’t recall a lot of the doctor visits.

“I do remember some, but not all of them,” Lisa said.

While Lisa was admitted into the hospital, Jill was six months pregnant and passed out because she was in such shock, she ended up delivering their son Marco.

He was born prematurely and weighed a little more than three pounds.

“That was our bad time,” Enzo said. “I went into robotic mode, I had to. I had Lisa on one floor, my son on another and Jill on a third floor.”

The Scognamiglio family said they went through a lot, not only personally but financially at the time, but they knew they needed to be there for their two children.

“I moved into the hospital, we pretty much lost everything. I couldn’t go back to work,” Enzo said.

When Lisa was well enough to leave the hospital, along with Jill and Marco, the long journey of the car rides back and forth from San Diego for the appointments began.

Jill and Enzo said Lisa was “touch and go” for the first two years.

“After the initial surgery, she had six more,” Enzo said. “Every surgery she would come out and it would set her back.”

Although the couple was criticized for the amount of therapies they put Lisa into they continued. This is something, they say, that has helped her the most.

One of the therapies included ballet classes.

“When Lisa said she wanted to do ballet, we told her she couldn’t, but she started.

She kept going, and the teacher put her in a recital,” Jill said. Her eyes began to tear up as she recalled the memory.

She smiled and wiped away a tear before continuing. “The other kids on either side of her were holding her up.”

Enzo, beside Jill, began to tear up as well. But they smiled, picturing their daughter in her recital outfit, holding onto other children as the routine continued.

“It’s hard to talk about all those years ago,” Jill said. “But she did it.”

Enzo said she could do it because Lisa is hardheaded and just want to be treated like any other kid.

Now, in the family’s Laguna Hills home, Lisa has her jewelry, clothes and shoes organized.

“Post-surgery, she became very organized and tidy,” Jill said.

The new personality traits were just one thing the family needed to adjust to.

“She doesn’t like change, she’s a creature of habit,” Jill said as she sat at the family’s dining room table on Wednesday.

Lisa said she has a routine, she takes the bus to work in Newport Beach, she goes to the gym once a week, she goes to the market with Jill, and she spends her weekends with her boyfriend Jordan.

Enzo said she’s always on the go. But

Sunday’s are reserved for family, whether they’re cooking, cleaning or just running errands together.

Another thing the family is all involved in is the fundraising they do for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, in which Jill is a board member. The couple said they used to be quieter about it and would raise some funds, but nothing like the amounts they bring in today.

“Twenty-five years ago the word cancer was bad, you didn’t talk about it,” Enzo said. “Now, that’s why we do this, we believe the more you talk about it the more acceptance there will be and the more people will help each other.”

In June, the couple held a fundraiser for the foundation and was able to bring in more than $50,000.

“We have a soft spot for kids, and cancer,” Enzo said. “It feels really good to raise the amount we have with the help we’ve gotten.”

On Wednesday night, the family gathered in their kitchen to begin preparing for their meal, they laughed and joked with one another. They have been known around Dana Point in one of their many businesses including Brio Tuscan Grille, but at home, they’re just a family continuing to go with Lisa to her MRI’s, and being thankful every day that she has had a clear scan. Oldest Trophy in Sport Brought to Dana Point

165-year-old America’s Cup returns to the Dana Point

L

ocals got a glimpse of the oldest trophy in international sport on July 17, as the America’s Cup trophy sat on display at the Dana Point Yacht Club for a special presentation. The 165-year-old Auld Mug, awarded to the winner of the famous America’s Cup sailing race, was given a Marines escort into the building.

The America’s Cup is a perpetual trophy race and for the last two installments of the event, Oracle Team USA has successfully defended the cup. Oracle Team USA sails out of the Golden Gate Yacht Club, which brought the trophy to Dana Point for the presentation for the second time since defending the cup in 2013.

Golden Gate Yacht Club’s commodore Norbert Bajurin was on-hand at the DPYC to give visitors a history lesson on the cup and to outline Oracle Team USA’s plans to compete in the 2017 America’s Cup. The trophy dates back to 1851, when

the vessel America out of the New York Yacht Club, defeated a British vessel in a race around the Isle of Wight. The race was soon renamed after the American ship.

The top part of the trophy, which stands at about four feet in height, is the original piece of hardware that was handed over to the winner of the race more than a century ago.

The Dana Point Recreation Department’s adult summer league season is underway.

The league offers co-ed softball and kickball leagues for all skill levels and, after two weeks of competition, is picking up steam.

DP Caraway Invited to USA Baseball 12U National Open Dana Point resident Trent Caraway was invited to compete alongside the best 12-year-old baseball players in the nation this week as part of USA Baseball’s 12U National Open tournament. The event featured 112 players from around the country competing at the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton over a three-day stretch which ended on July 20.

Caraway, a soon-to-be seventh grader at Marco Forster Middle School, and other players in attendance were vying for one of 36 spots on the 12U National Team Trials roster in hopes of making the national team.

All-Star Baseball Team’s Run Ends in Regionals The Dana Point Youth Baseball 10U Mustang All-Star team closed out its season following a loss to Newport Beach on July 17.

The local team had a spectacular run through All-Star competition, placing first in their division at the PONY District tournament on July 3. The win at the district Dana Point Times July 22-28, 2016

tournament earned the team a berth in the PONY Regional tournament.

The team finished its All-Star season with a 14-6 overall record.

The DPYB 10U PONY All-Star team includes: Cal Ignosci, Kaidin Stein, Wyatt Popka, Cole Tarango, Jackson Summers, Noah Kucera, Sebastian Naficy, Michael Yousef, Coltrane Torres, Nate DiPiero, Deacon Hill, Landon Whitaker and Jackson Garbino. rom surfskis to SUPs, there was a plethora of surfing this weekend as Ocean Festival participants enjoyed warm weather and clear skies.

One of the main events held Saturday July 16 was the sixth annual SUP surfing contest, where men and women can compete in their respective divisions for SUP glory: SUP open women’s, SUP men’s 39 under and SUP men’s 40 over.

Competitors had a max of 10 waves with judges taking their top three at the end of each round. The participants started on the north side of the San Clemente pier, and had to catch their best waves before the end of each round.

The first rounds started early in the morning with Nikki Newland, Shae Foudy, and two-time SUWT Champion and ISA Gold Medalist in SUP Surfing, Izzi Gomez, taking first place in their individual rounds.

Leading the first round of heats for men’s 39 under was Anthony Maltese, Jedd Hasay and Haakon Hoyer-Nielson, while Drew Brophy, Byron Kurt and Dave Boehne led the men’s 40 over.

CATALINA DOWNER

ith only a couple years of surfing under her belt, 8-year-old Catalina Downer is already making a name for herself in local surf competitions.

This weekend at the Ocean Festival in San Clemente, Catalina battled it out against 24 other under-12 girls in the “Groms Rule” Surf Contest.

Catalina has been surfing since she was 6 years old, and this was her first year competing in the Ocean Festival.

“I like the big waves and when you get on the wave it’s really fun when you have a good wave” Catalina said.

She explained she liked the big waves because, “they’re just fun to drop in on and stuff.”

side her older sister, Sierra, in the semifinal heat after Catalina placed second in the first round. Although Sierra did not advance to the final round, the bond between these two sisters is tangible. Cheering on the shore with her family during Catalina’s final heat, Sierra would rush to the water’s edge every time she came in through the surf, and made sure to point her sister in the right direction.

Catalina came in with a sixth place win at the “Groms Rule” surf contest awards, and wore her medal proudly. This is also Catalina’s first year competing in the WSA/ Salt Life Championship Tour Series in the Micro Grom Girls U10 Division.

She said when she grows up, “I either want to be a professional surfer, or if I don’t make it that far a golfer or soccer player.”

First and foremost, she wants to be a pro surfer.

In her free time, Catalina likes to play soccer and golf. She will be going into third grade this year at Concordia Elementary, and her mother, Abby Downer, said she loves math and reading. DP

Boehne said this was his first year competing in the SUP men’s over 40 event.

Boehne is well-known in the Dana Point community for designing and shaping Infinity surfboards and SUPs. “It was fun being the ‘young’ guy in the division,” he said. “I’ve competed in all of the Ocean Fest SUP surf competitions except one.”

Boehne said he got into SUP naturally because he loves the ocean and finds it as another means to enjoy it.

Giorgio Gomez, Izzi Gomez’s brother, was a tough competitor in the 39 under final round. Also known for competing in the Stand Up World Tour (SUWT), Gomez said this was his second year competing at the Ocean Festival. Gomez has been a San Cle-

mente local for two years now after living in Florida, and said he enjoys the consistency of California surf, and hanging out with the Infinity guys.

Heading into the final rounds of the day proved a little more difficult as competitors had to paddle out against wind and choppy surf. The announcers commended the participants for making the most of each wave despite trying conditions, as they each needed at least three waves for the judges to score in the finals.

In the end, both Gomez siblings took first place for their divisions; Izzi placing first in the SUP open women’s and Giorgio in the SUP 39 under. Taking first in the 40 over was Boehne, who said he was stoked on his first-place finish. DP
