Five things Dana Point should know this week Dana Point Teen Focuses on City’s Homeless Population for Eagle Scout Project THE LATEST: A Dana Point teen has been working toward earning his Eagle Scout rank for months, and in doing so, he’s one step closer to helping the city’s homeless population.

Danny Dubois, 16, packed up blue backpacks on a recent Saturday morning with toothbrushes, toothpaste, water, beanies, food gift cards and bus passes to distribute to the area’s homeless population.

“I just thought homeless people needed some help,” Danny said about the reason for his project.

Danny has been able to raise more than $3,000 for the care packages, which will be given to I-Hope, a charity helping the homeless in Dana Point.

He said he was happy about raising the money, especially since his goal was $1,500.

Danny’s parents, Dan and Mary, said he’s been working on the project since October, and was able to put together more than 100 backpacks over the weekend with the help of his troop, Troop 12.

WHAT’S NEXT: “I encouraged it,” Mary said about Danny’s choice in project. “We see homeless people everywhere, and lately it’s been cold and rainy and they’re getting kicked out of places.”

Coffee Chat Scheduled for Feb. 17 THE LATEST: After the rain washed out January’s Dana Point Civic Association’s Coffee Chat, the next event will be held on Friday, Feb. 17 at Coffee Importers.

Ursula Luna-Reynosa, Dana Point director of community development, and her staff will be providing an update on various projects around town including the future surf park at Zephyr.

Council Gives OK to Begin Work on Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan THE LATEST: Eleven years after it was created, work on the city’s Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan can officially begin.

On Tuesday night, City Council voted 5-0 in favor of directing city staff to initiate an update to the Master Plan.

The plan was written in 2005 and is considered a 20 year planning document, according to the staff report.

Mark Denny, deputy city manager, said the city has added seven parks and one facility since the plan was created.

According to the staff report, the master plan will contain a detailed visual display of each park and provide a quick reference to the park’s amenities, recreational uses, needs and proposed projects.

The anticipated cost of two contractors to assess the needs and public work facilitation is $60,000 and will be included in the recommended city budget for fiscal years 2017-2019.

During the meeting, there was confusion whether the resolution meant the Council was approving spending $60,000 but Denny clarified the resolution only meant staff could initiate the process.

Mayor Pro Tem Paul Wyatt said he would like to make the documents, as they’re made, accessible to the public so they can comment on them.

County Water Board of Directors ‘Urges’ State to Lift Emergency Water Restrictions THE LATEST: Record precipitation this late fall to winter and swelling reservoirs convinced the Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) board of directors to ask state water officials to end state of emergency water restrictions.

The board unanimously passed a resolution to “urge” the state to lift the restrictions, according to a press release distributed on Monday.

However, the State Water Resources Control Board, which sets the regulations, voted on Wednesday, Feb. 8, to continue the emergency restrictions put in place

by Gov. Jerry Brown in 2014 for another 270 days. The board also voted to examine the measures in May to see what kind of water the state receives as the “rainy season” ends.

Many water district representatives throughout the state spoke against the extension during the meeting, citing that water levels at reservoirs and reserve amounts can sustain many of their clients through the next three years, a measurement observed by many districts.

MWDOC officials argued the Sierra Nevada snowpack has measured at 173 percent of normal with an accumulated precipitation of 53.2 inches in Northern

California, or 198 percent of normal, which is where most of Southern California’s water comes from, according to the release.

Jonathan Volzke, public information officer for MWDOC, said the data from the Department of Agriculture’s Drought Monitor had convinced board members that there is no longer a need for the emergency restrictions.

“South Orange County receives most of its water from up north, and they’re having a record year of rain and snow, and that translates into water for Southern California,” Volzke said.

Wayne Osborne, president of the MWDOC board of directors, stated in a press release that it is imperative the state lift the restrictions soon because it erodes credibility of officials when it’s been raining as much as it has the past few months but restrictions exist.

According to the press release, the district stated it’s important to maintain that credibility as Calfornia WaterFix and EcoRestore projects drive more drinking water to Southern California and enhance the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta.

WHAT’S NEXT: “MWDOC (board of) directors on Monday cautioned residents to continue being water efficient, even as the emergency has passed,” the release stated. “Orange County residents continue to use about the same amount of water as they did two decades ago, although the population has increased by more than one million people.”

Gas Rewards Program Expands to Dana Point

THE LATEST: Dana Point residents can start earning gas rewards after Albertsons Companies, LLC and Chevron Products Company announced their expansion of their Gas Rewards program to Southern California.

The expansion of the Gas Rewards program, which has been in place for Vons, Chevron and Texaco customers, will ostensibly help Albertsons customers save on gas.

For every 100 points earned by shopping at Southern California Albertsons and Vons stores, customers will receive a 10 cent-per-gallon Gas Reward. Customers can earn points every time they use their phone number while shopping at the local stores, according to a statement.

Former Vice President Joe Biden Speaks in Dana Point Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden recently spoke at the fifth annual World Patient Safety, Science & Technology Summit at Laguna Cliffs Marriot.

Biden spoke about the need for more collaboration in medical industries, the efforts to prevent and cure different cancers and emphasized the need for medical professionals to recognize these issues.

The summit brings international leaders from hospitals, medical and information technology companies, the patient advocacy community, public policy makers and government officials to discuss solutions to the leading challenges that cause preventable patient death in hospitals.

The summit, which sold out, also hosted former President Bill Clinton.

Bulky Item Drop-off Event Planned Residents will have the opportunity to drop off bulky items for free on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Dana Hills High School and Palisades Elementary School.

Residents can bring e-waste, green waste, large appliances, furniture and other bulky items that don’t fit into a normal waste container.

Goodwill Industries will be at both locations to accept charitable donations.

Doheny Village Plan and Form-Based Codes

W

hen asked recently by the Dana Point Times to list my priorities as a new member of the City Council, I put “building trust between the City and its residents and businesses” at the top of the list. Building trust requires open, honest communication and realistic expectations.

In the first Council’s Corner, Mayor Lewis wrote, “I would like you to understand the meaning and long-term implications of ‘formbased codes’ (FBC) being COUNCIL'S proposed for Doheny CORNER Village.” She then sugBy Paul Wyatt gested that I take on the challenge of helping you gain this understanding in this week’s Council’s Corner.

Although a strong supporter of Doheny Village revitalization, I am concerned about some of the zoning changes, the very limited parking, the “diet” for Doheny Park Road and the use of FBC instead of traditional zoning in the Doheny Village Plan.

Being an engineer, gaining an understanding of FBC, why they came about and how they have been successfully used was interesting. Reducing the dozens of documents and articles I read into a couple of paragraphs that you can readily understand is the challenge I face here.

The ultimate goal of the Doheny Village Plan is to transform the area into a pedestrian-friendly mixed-use village. Although this goal is very similar to the 2008 Town Center Plan, the FBC approach taken by the planners is notably different.

Put simply, a FBC is a way to regulate development that controls building form (look) first and building use second, with the purpose of achieving a particular type of “place.”

For example, a typical day may begin with a trip from a residential zone to work in a business zone with a stop at a store in a commercial zone on the way back home to the residential zone.

In contrast, by focusing first on what the buildings look like (form) with their uses as the secondary consideration, the Doheny Village Plan will create neighborhoods that have a specified look and flow, but not regulated by a required use, similar to urban cores of larger cities.

FBC neighborhoods will include intermixed residences, restaurants, assorted retail shops, businesses or care facilities.

Further, the use for any space can change over the life of that space to meet the perceived needs of the neighborhood, as determined by the owner. In other words, the form will remain constant but the use can be changed to any of the FBC’s permissible uses for that form. To quote from the Purpose Section of the Plan, these standards implement the intent to “create places of walkable urbanism.”

To set expectations, if approved, the Doheny Village Plan will become the zoning ordinances for its future development.

It will be up to developers and property owners in the area to take advantage of this new zoning. A weakness of formbased codes is that the desired results cannot be achieved by mixing existing building with the new form-based buildings.

In most areas of Doheny Village, multiple contiguous lots will need to be aggregated into areas large enough to build neighborhoods. This will take time, possibly years, and might never be achieved in all the areas included in the plan.

I will use future Council’s Corners and other forums to help you understand more aspect of the Doheny Village Plan and my concerns. DP

I answered their phone call on the first ring and pressed “3” to ask him a question immediately. Throughout the one-hour call, he repeatedly kept advising listeners to press the buttons and ask questions, strongly implying that lines were open, despite the fact that I was waiting. The same thing happened in the meeting last fall. Almost all the callers who are let through seemed to be Republicans, and a number congratulated him on his election victory. The one caller who appeared to be opposed to Mr. Issa politically, someone from Dana Point, was interrupted several times by Rep. Issa in a rude, dismissive tone before he could get a sentence out.

Rep. Issa claims he hasn’t had an

in-person constituent town hall in his district since 2009 because that one cost the taxpayers $50,000 and he can hold the telephone town hall from Washington for $100 to save us money. If he acted in good faith and took all calls received, I wouldn’t argue with it. But it is just an excuse to avoid honest communication with voters.

This is authoritarian behavior not worthy of the U.S. government, which should be for all the people, not just some.

At the Movies: ‘The Comedian’ Misses the Jokes obert De Niro: the man, the legend.

The Hollywood actor began his career working with prolific filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Brian de Palma, Francis Ford Coppola and Sergio Leone in the 1970s. He won two Oscars, one for The Godfather, Part II (1974) and one for Raging Bull (1980), and he continued to prosper creatively for the next two decades. Then, around 2000, he switched to primarily making comedies. Then around 2010, he started making mediocre comedies with the rare decent dramedy in between them.

His new indie feature, The Comedian, from director Taylor Hackford, is a bit of both mediocrity and light drama. A once-relevant, crude insult comedian named Jackie Burke (De Niro) is doing community service as part of his sentence for assaulting a crowd heckler during a stand-up gig. While attempting to get his career back on track, Jackie begins a courtship with a woman

The cast includes a bunch of big names like Edie Falco, Danny DeVito, Patti LuPone, Charles Grodin, Billy Crystal and Harvey Keitel. The Comedian once again asks the perplexing question: Why are movies about comedians rarely ever genuinely funny?

There are literally no funny jokes or gags here. The characters are all unlikable and the relationships barely make any sense.

Not even De Niro and Keitel reuniting on screen can save the lack of quality. The Comedian isn’t exactly Dirty Grandpa (2016) bad, but it’s not The King of Comedy (1983) good either. DP

een performing with her local band The Moon Police, 19-year-old Grace Freeman is set to debut her latest album, Shadow on March 3.

“It’s kind of a compilation of music that I wrote when I was 14 up to this point,” Freeman said. “A lot of the songs are really innocent, but a lot of the later songs come into more in-depth thoughts and feelings.

“It’s kind of like a folksy, Joni Mitchell kind of voice, and also a lot of Paul McCartney-style pop music,” she added.

Freeman is accustomed to performing for large groups of people, as performing with The Moon Police has packed crowds in San Clemente venues for about the last two years.

“I hope this album can touch (listeners) somehow, even if it’s not in a super-intense way,” Freeman said. “I feel like music is meant to move people or relate to them and give them purpose.”

Freeman said she is trying to do more songwriting in the near future, and she plans to create songs for movie and televi-

sion shows. She said she finds a lot of excitement in writing songs for other artists.

have a friend in Orange County named Christine Baumgartner. I’ve known Christine for years. She is a relationship counselor and expert on dating and relationships.

In response to a newsletter I had written, Christine made a comment about what attracts men to women, which she based on comments her male coaching clients had shared with her over the years.

She wrote, “The part women don’t understand are two very important elements for a man to be ON LIFE AND attracted to a woman.

They need women to need them for some things, such as financial assistance, or using a man’s knowledge, or providing physical help.

The way women can allow for a man to provide for them is to ask for his help. Ask for help regarding things you don’t know how to do. Ask for his help if it would be easier for you if he did it instead. Ask for his input if you’d like to get another opinion. Ask for his help if you’d like to spend more time with him.

“2. Men need us to appreciate them. And if men are able to provide for us, this gives us as women ample opportunities to say ‘thank you’ to them for their help.

“The way to show men appreciation is once a man has helped you, tell him how happy his help made you. Tell him what a benefit his help made in your life. Tell him you enjoyed being able to count on his help.

“And the benefit to the woman for doing this is the man will want to do even more things for you to receive more thanks. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

Christine added that these two elements do not mean that women shouldn’t be selfsufficient or somewhat independent. She

said, “Men are very attracted to women who are independent thinkers and passionate about the things they are good at, and who can take care of many parts of their lives.”

I think Christine’s comments about these two elements are very significant. People like to feel appreciated. When you think about it, it’s such a simple thing to do. It’s what makes a giver feel good inside. It’s not financial payback a giver seeks. It’s feel-good appreciation, knowing that an act of kindness meant a lot to the person you helped.

Appreciation is the heart and soul of volunteer work. It’s the reward that volunteers feel in donating their time and effort. Lately, I have heard from two people who volunteered for two South Orange County charities, but resigned because the leaders of those charities were trying to run them like cut-and-dried, profit-and-loss corporations and were not appreciative of the volunteers.

Another friend just resigned from the Peace Corps. The reason: lack of appreciation.

So, it’s not just in romantic relationships that appreciation is essential, it’s in all aspects of life. Boys & Girls Club Honors Youth of the Year

Dana Hills High School senior was recently named 2016 Youth of the Year from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley.

Sarah Arce joined the Via Positiva Branch in San Juan Capistrano 11 years ago as a second grader. Since, she has been a part of the club’s Key Stone Club and has taken public speaking classes.

“I was super excited; I was shaking when I heard my name,” Sarah said.

“I didn’t know what to do at first, but I hugged the program director because I’m close with him.”

Sarah said she joined the Club’s Key Stone club as a freshman and worked her way up to president.

Youth of the Year celebrates the club member’s achievements. Each year, one person is selected from the three branches; they will then compete with others in a state-wide competition, then regionally, all with the hope of becoming Boys & Girls Club of America’s overall Youth of the Year.

The selected member will serve as ambassador for the club youth and be a voice in the community.

each member has to write three essays, answer a variety of questions, go through an interview process as well as make a speech. Sarah said she wasn’t nervous because the club has helped her prepare for these things.

“The club has helped me develop my character and personality and they helped me a lot with my classes,” Sarah said. “I don’t think I’d be going to college without them.”

Dana Hills teacher named CUSD’s high school teacher of the year

ob Harris never knows what to expect when he walks through the halls of Dana Hills High School— and that’s the way he likes it.

There could be students belting out a song in the hallway, the cheerleading squad could be practicing around the corner or a dance number could be underway.

These are some of his favorite moments, he said, because it shows his students the school is alive with energy.

Using the liveliness of the school is part of why the Capistrano Unified School District selected Harris, a special education teacher at Dana Hills, as the High School Teacher of the Year.

“I can’t believe they picked me,” he said sitting in his classroom moments after his students left. He looked around the room, with photos of past and present students, Disney posters and schedules for the students hanging on the walls.

Harris was surprised with the award last week, where else, but in the halls outside his classroom at Dana Hills. Harris and a few other teachers were getting ready to board a bus to Disneyland with his students and members of the Best Buddy Program. What he didn’t know was that school and district officials were planning the big surprise.

“We had about 60 Buddies and 35 students, so probably around 100 kids; we do this trip every year,” Harris said recalling the surprise. “We were fired up.”

He said he came into the room and the staff told him to sit while they organized everything in the hall.

“We were giving orientation about how the day would go, and (after that), I walked out into the hallway and there they were.”

After a brief celebration, the group stood in front of the banner and posed to take photos, which he said was an exciting but emotional moment. “[The students] definitely understood what was happening, and they were happy,” Harris said with a smile. “It was emotional for some, including me, and maybe only me, but it was exciting. They could tell these principal types were coming in and had a banner with them, they were so stoked.”

He added that the kids in the Best Buddy program were surprised as well.

Harris has been at Dana Hills High School for 12 years in the special education department but has been with CUSD since 1994. Previously, he worked as a

job technician with the Department of Rehabilitation, Regional Center and CUSD Education Specialists to help fit the clients’ aptitudes, education levels, physical abilities and career goals.

Harris teaches a variety of subjects— math, writing, reading, history—but he said he simply enjoys teaching kids every day.

“This is by far the best school because the students here treat everyone so kind,” Harris said.

Dana Hills Principal Jason Allemann said what sets Harris apart is the fact that he’s an advocate for his students.

“He makes sure they can have the most authentic high school experience,” Allemann said. “He makes sure they are participating socially with other high school students.”

Harris mentioned he enjoyed seeing his kids with the other students in the school.

“The football coaches have been able to see the good personalities of our kids. The music teachers work with our students and then let them perform at Oldies Night,” Harris said. “Our dance teacher includes them in dances.”

Joel Tapper, a teacher that also works in the special education department and co-advises the Best Buddy Program with Harris, said he is a gifted special education teacher.

“Rob’s total commitment to his students is exemplified by continual communication with parents and teachers from the past,” Tapper said. “After 23 years with CUSD, he still gets emotional at graduation; he is continually tinkering and striving to better perfect his classroom. He cares.”

In Harris’ classroom, every day is different.

“All the subjects I teach relate to preparing for the next step,” Harris said.

“Whether it’s reading, writing or learning about history, it’s all related to being in the community I think.”

He added that the students learn about reading safety signs, being able to socialize with others, exchange information if

needed, and Harris shows them how to apply those lessons outside the classroom.

“If we’re learning about money, we can go out on Wednesday and use real money,” Harris said. “It encourages communication, and they get to see other people using social skills.”

Every Wednesday the class takes a trip to apply the skills learned in the class, like

how to use public transportation.

“Don’t forget this Wednesday is The Habit,” Harris said of an upcoming trip, as a group of his students walked out the door on Monday. One student grinned at the thought of the cheeseburgers.

On Thursdays, Harris and two students head to Ocean Ranch and work at Trader Joe’s.

“We’ve been doing that for about 10 years,” Harris said. “The manager is supportive and at this point we know what’s expected of us. The students will say, ‘Hello,’ and check themselves in.”

Harris said the students decide what they want to do that day and then get to work in their uniform and name tags.

After work, they’re rewarded.

“I want them to learn that work pays,” Harris said. “We’re provided with Yogurtland cards, and they get to get something under $6 so they’re choosing what to add, weighing it and seeing how much it comes to.”

On Fridays, the students head into the kitchen and learn to cook.

“I want to prepare them for as much as possible,” Harris said.

Harris said the beginning steps of the Teacher of the Year process was difficult.

“They gave me an application ... it was fun to reflect and difficult to write,” Harris said. “I still can’t believe I got picked.”

Throughout the afternoon inside Harris’ classroom, he said he was humbled by the award and made sure to mention his co-workers a number of times. He even joked that he won the award based on sheer familiarity—he’s been at Dana Hills for a while and wears a blue shirt. But, his colleagues say he received the honor on the merits of his teaching.

“Even though we are the same age, I feel he is a mentor to me,” said Tapper.

“Personally, I feel I won the lottery to be able to work alongside Rob. He believes our program should always be ‘student first, always, period.’”

Harris will represent CUSD at the Orange County Department of Education Teachers of the Year program, where four teachers will be selected to move on to the California Department of Education Teacher of the Year program. DP

sing her love for helping others as motivation, a Dana Hills High School graduate created a non-profit organization that allows kids with intellectual and development disabilities to better socialize with their peers.

Lyndcee Barragato, a Laguna Niguel resident, realized quickly she enjoyed working with different needs students when she began volunteering in special education classes at Dana Hills High School.

“I wanted to invite these kids out to events and activities,” Lyndcee said. “So then I’d take them out to the movies, bowling, and that’s when I realized they really enjoyed doing it, and it made me want to create an organization.”

Just Like Me, a 501(c)(3) organization, was thus created to serve young adults with intellectual and development disabilities with the purpose of providing organized afterschool, weekend and summer activities.

Along with the group’s vice president, Sarina Shakouri, Lyndcee has been working hard to help other kids her age with disabilities enjoy life.

Lyndcee’s mother, Lori, said while Lyndcee was in high school, she invited one of the boys in the class to winter formal, and when she called the boy’s mom, she thought it was a prank.

She said, “This isn’t a joke at all and the mother got very emotional,” Lori said. “So Lyndcee came home and said, ‘If one person feels this way, how many other mothers feel like that?’ And I told her, ‘All of them.’”

To have enough money to pull off the ultimate school dance experience, Lyndcee returned her birthday and Christmas gifts and was able to rent a stretch limo for the group. To top it off, Lyndcee and Sarina made sure everyone had a date.

“It was amazing,” said Bernadette Chiarello, an ambassador for the group. She remembered attending the dance with the group and said it was really a great experience.

The group intends to hold events like movie nights, bowling nights, bonfires and more.

“We want to do at least two events per month,” Lyndcee said. “We’re small and just getting started, so for now we’re sticking with two.”

The group’s future goals include branching out to not only high school students, but young adults in surrounding communities.

“Often times, once the students leave the high school, there’s not that many activities for them,” said Sarina’s mom, Allie Shakouri.

“One of our main goals is inclusion.”

Another goal the group wants to work on is giving back to the community.

“The girls are very keen on being a part of the community and giving back to them,” Allie said.

In the lead-up to the kick-off event, Lyndcee and Sarina said they’re excited.

“We’re ready for the night and are excited to get people interested,” Sarina said.

THE EVENT The Foundation is holding a kick-off event for 2017 on Feb. 22 in the Dana Point Community Center’s gym.

There will be a variety of activities, live music by DJ NOAH, as well as an information session for parents. There will be free pizza and drinks.

For the first time in over a decade, the Dana Hills girls basketball team won 20 games during the regular season. The feat has not been accomplished since at least the 2005 season.

Dana Hills (20-6, 6-2 league) placed second in the Sea View League, clinching a berth into the upcoming CIF-SS Division 2A Championships. The playoff brackets will be released on Feb. 12.

The Dolphins won their final two games of the season, against Capistrano Valley and Laguna Hills, to finish on a high note.

The Dolphins’ season was one for the

school-record books. Their schedule featured several impressive win streaks including a season-best 12-game winning streak that stretched from Dec. 9 to Jan. 23.

Dana Hills proved to be a stout defensive squad this season. They held opponents to an average of 37 points per game.

Dana Hills finished the regular season ranked 14th in the CIF-SS Division 2AA top-16 poll.

Girls Soccer Places Fourth after Wild Finish

A 4-1 loss to Tesoro in the final South Coast League game of the season on Feb. 6 forced the Dana Hills girls soccer team to watch from the sidelines and hope for some luck as the rest of the league finished out their schedules.

But the dominos did not fall the Dolphins’ way.

The loss to Tesoro put Dana Hills (7-5-7, 3-4-1) in fourth position in league, and San Clemente got the win it needed on the last day of the season on Feb. 8 to jump into second place, knocking the Dolphins out of contention for the league’s final playoff berth.

Hendricks’ Homecoming Chicago Cubs breakout star Kyle Hendricks honored by high school alma mater

A

s Kyle Hendricks stood at the center of the court in Capistrano Valley High School’s gym, the memories began to flood back into his mind.

He was being awarded the school’s Spirit of the Cougar award, an honor doled out to accomplished students and alumni.

After Hendricks’ unbelievable 2016 season as a pitcher for the World Series champion Chicago Cubs, it’s easy to see why he was selected to be honored before the Cougars’ home basketball game on Feb. 3.

But Hendricks wasn’t thinking about his start in the seventh game of the World Series, a game in which he helped his team erase a 3-1 series deficit and break a 108year old title drought. Nor was he thinking about the All-Star batters he baffled on his way to claiming the ERA title in just his second full year in the MLB. Hendricks was instead thinking about where it all started, which was the baseball diamond located just a few long tosses from the back door of the gym he was standing in.

“It feels like I was here yesterday,” Hendricks, a 2008 Capo Valley grad, said. “All this has happened so quick for me.”

Hendricks grew up on the ballfields of Southern California. The weather, and his love of the game, ensured that he could play year-round. He began playing in Dana Point Little League and eventually joined the storied program led by longtime coach Bob Zamora at Capo Valley.

Hendricks grew into a two-sport standout in high school, playing both golf and baseball.

He became known on the diamond for his poise and mental approach to the game, and rose to become the team’s top

Shutout Ends Dolphins Boys Soccer Season

pitcher his senior year.

But Hendricks, a San Juan Capistrano native, was not a hot prospect his senior year, despite being the Cougars’ ace. He had a fastball that hung around in the lowto-mid 80s, and wasn’t the can’t-miss arm on the Capo Valley staff that drew attention of Major League scouts. That distinction belonged to Tyler Matzek, a junior hurler who lit up radar guns that went on to become a first-round draft selection in 2009.

After a solid senior year, in which he led the Cougars in wins and innings pitched, the low-profile Hendricks was picked by the Angels in the 39th round of the draft to little fanfare.

Rather than go straight to the MLB Hendricks instead chose to attend Dartmouth.

The Ivy League and college atmosphere allowed Hendricks to hit his stride.

His 2011 season at Dartmouth ended up being Hendricks’ breakout collegiate year. He went 5-3 as a starter, pitched 62 innings and compiled a 2.47 ERA. He was named first-team All-Ivy League and was Dartmouth’s pitcher of the year.

“I happened to be a late bloomer, and in college I started to develop a little bit more and found my path,” Hendricks said.

After three years of college, Hendricks reentered the draft and was taken by the Texas Rangers in the eighth round.

The Rangers traded Hendricks and another prospect to the Cubs for aging starter Ryan Dempster in 2012. Four years later, and every Cubs fan from Wrigleyville

Hendricks made his MLB debut in 2014, and after a middling 2015 season, broke out in a big way last year. He went 16-8 as a starter, tossing a career-high 190 innings, led the league in ERA (2.13) and finished third in the National League Cy Young Award voting, ahead of superstars like Madison Bumgarner and Clayton Kershaw.

Already a recognizable name amongst baseball fans, Hendricks became a national storyline during the Cubs’ magical postseason run.

He allowed two hits, no walks and struck out six over 7 1/3 shutout innings against the Dodgers in Game Six of the National League Championship Series.

When manager Joe Maddon replaced Hendricks on the mound he left to a raucous standing ovation from the Wrigley faithful.

The Cubs won the game 5-0, and punched their ticket to the World Series. Hendricks appeared twice in the Fall Classic but did not factor into a decision.

Hendricks’ calling card has always been that he is cerebral, a thinker and student of the game. He’s earned the nickname “The Professor” as a result, and the only flashy thing about Hendricks on the mound is his results.

For much of his baseball life, he was able to fly under the radar, but that’s not possible anymore.

He said whenever he walks anywhere in Chicago these days, he gets stopped by a fan looking to connect and tell him a story of how much the team’s win meant to them or their family.

That same scenario played out outside the Capo Valley gym on Friday night. Hendricks waved to the crowd inside one last time, and headed for the exit, flanked by his former coach. Outside, he was stopped by a dozen fans, and took the time to smile for selfies and sign autographs for anyone who wanted one.

It’s now all part of life for the player who has emerged as a full-fledged star.

“It’s pretty overwhelming when you think about it. To come back, being honored and have all these people getting up and clapping for me, it’s a lot but it’s very humbling,” Hendricks said. “It’s all changed, but it’s all for the positive.” DP

he National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) season has fired back up again and the kids are ripping. Last weekend, a handful of San Clemente’s finest up-and-comers beelined it up the coast for a Gold Coast event. Held at Ventura Harbor, the swell was pumping, bringing the surf well into the overhead range. Undaunted by the sizable, winter conditions, 10-year-old Makai Bray rose to the occasion. Earning a 9.5 score for one of his rides, it proved to be the highest ride of the entire contest. Carrying the momentum through the finals, young Makai took home the win in the Super Grom division.

So far, 2017 has been good to Makai. A few weeks back, he headed down south to the Caribbean side of Panama and the Bocas Del Toro area for a contest. Not only was it a great opportunity to surf in some warm, tropical water and gain some valuable international experience, he came away with some solid results.

“Stoked to win the U12 and make the semifinals in U14,” reported Makai on his social media feed.

The next NSSA Southwest Conference Open event lands at Salt Creek in Dana Point at the end of February. No doubt Makai will be amped and ready for action. DP

‘Surfing Magazine’ shuts down after a half century in the lineup

S

urfing is a colorful pursuit with colorful characters, and for the better part of half a century, Surfing Magazine was the most colorful mag in the wave-riding business. First hitting newsstands in 1964, founding publishers Leroy Grannis and Dick Graham immediately had designs on taking away a share of the rapidly expanding surf media market from their friend and competitor John Severson, who had started publishing Surfer magazine several years prior.

Being the upstart with something to prove was seemingly ingrained in Surfing’s DNA from day one.

While Surfer got mired down in the black wetsuits, logoless boards and soul daddies of the ’70s, Surfing steadied its lens on the burgeoning pro scene. In those early days, the editorial vision was largely realized by scribe Drew Kampion, one of the most esteemed writers in the surf business. By the mid-’70s, the magazine had found its voice and financial footing under the leadership of publisher Bob Mignogna, editor Dave Gilovich and photo editor Larry “Flame” Moore.

“This was the very beginning of pro surfing and that’s what we decided to focus our efforts on,” explained Mignogna. “Surfer magazine was looking a lot more at the travel and exploration aspects of the sport, and very early on we decided that pro surfing and the emerging IPS World Tour, and later the ASP World Tour, was something that we could cover. It generated a lot of interest as the industry took hold.”

In 1976, Surfing moved their operation from Mission Viejo (where they were neighbors of the Clark Foam factory) to San Clemente. Originally basing themselves on Camino Capistrano near Poche, a few years later they moved up to Rancho San Clemente.

By the time the ’80s hit, it was full tilt boogie at Surfing. Led by Gilovich (currently the mastermind behind Surfline.com’s editorial offering), the magazine had amassed a stout lineup of editorial talent. Michael Tomson (who founded Gotcha), bronzed Aussies Peter Townend and Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew all lent their voices and influence to the publication. Guided by the hard-driving photo editing of Flame, lensmen such as Aaron Chang, Jeff Hornbaker and Don King delivered in-your-face, tack-sharp action imagery to surf fans on the monthly.

They became household names for anyone that wanted to get a shot in the magazine.

The coup d’etat came in the form of Michael Salisbury’s art direction. Spending time at Surfer, Rolling Stone and Playboy, in the early ’80s he redesigned Surfing, giving it a brave, new wave look that set the tone for the splashy, neon era.

“Salisbury never left the beach, personally or professionally, and in the ’80s he gave Surfing Magazine a vibrant makeover, and turned Gotcha into a flaming pyre of nihilistic beachwear cool,” Matt Warshaw, the author of the Encyclopedia of Surfing, recently wrote for Surfer. “What a remarkable career. And what a pleasure to hear how no-bullshit Salisbury himself is about what he’s achieved.”

Besides evolving into the home for the pro scene, Surfing also broke down a significant amount of other wave-riding barriers. In 1984, Flame took Santa Barbara rising star Tom Curren south of the border to Isla Todos Santos and in one photo shoot proved to the world that Hawaii wasn’t the only big-wave game in the world. In 1990, Moore, along with Surfline founder Sean Collins and pilot Mike Castillo, flew 100 miles off the California coast to survey the navigational nightmare known as Cortes Bank. On January 19, 2001, they returned to the bank with surfers Mike Parsons, Brad Gerlach, Peter Mel and Ken Collins and made history.

“The ocean was just alive. The amount of

chaos going on over that reef was amazing,” said Parsons afterwards. “There was probably a mile and a half of white water.”

In the ’90s, Surfing introduced the Airshow concept, which put a premium on progressive maneuvers as opposed to the typical “three to the beach” format seen at most pro contests of the time. In 2007, Surfing editor Evan Slater organized the Google Earth Challenge, which revealed a long left point in Namibia, Africa, called Skeleton Bay. Today it’s considered one of the best waves on the planet.

In an awkward twist of fate, in 2001, Surfing’s parent company, Primedia, purchased the company that owned Surfer, and the two rivals were eventually moved into the same building. Around this same time, digital media began to wreak havoc on traditional print publishing. In 2015 and ’16, the magazines were moved from San Clemente to Carlsbad. In January 2017, it was announced that Surfing would be closing its doors for good.

“It’s sad to see it go,” said Mignogna.

“There were a few years in the late ’80s and early ’90s where Surfing was really driving the growth of the sport and the industry. I’m so proud of what we accomplished there; surfing was changed forever because of it.” DP
