The CCC suggested that if the city were to change parking standards or minimum night stays in their short-term rental ordinance, they would have to address those changes with the commission. Currently, the ordinance allows for a minimum two-night stay for renters, and requires two off-street parking spaces for guests.

Short-term rentals pertain to any rental of a room, home, apartment, condo or adjacent living unit under 30 days.

Many city officials at the Council meeting noted that the CCC referred to Dana Point’s short-term rental law as a “model ordinance.”

Former Dana Point Police Chief Booked 159 Nights at Unauthorized Discounted Marina Inn Rate THE LATEST: Former Dana Point Police Chief Lynn Koehmstedt spent 159 nights in a suite at the Dana Point Harbor Marina Inn in 2013 at a highly discounted rate, according to data obtained from the Orange County Auditor-Controller’s office.

Koehmstedt is one of the largest benefactors of an unauthorized discount program at the publicly owned Marina Inn, which was uncovered by a county audit earlier this month. The rates offered to county officials, harbor businesspeople, contractors and friends of the hotel operators were between $35 and $50 per night— more than half off the average market price of $102 per night. In all, 988 nights were booked at a discounted rate from 2009-2014. It cost the county over $62,000 in lost revenue.

At a May 17 City Council meeting, City Manager Doug Chotkevys said he did not find any city personnel who took advantage of the program—Koehmstedt is a county employee because police are Dana Point Times May 27-June 2, 2016

contracted by the city from the county, according to the auditor’s office. Assistant City Manager Mike Killebrew used the program for 17 days to get a discounted rate, but Meg Waters, communications manager at the Auditor’s Office, said there was “never any implication” that Killebrew was wrong to use the discount—Killebrew used a government rate for a city-sponsored event.

Other major users of the unauthorized discount program were Hotel Manager Tony Kaspar, whose friends, according to the raw audit data, stayed at the hotel for a total of 165 discounted nights; and Paul Lawrence, the former Dana Point Harbor operations manager, whose friends stayed at the hotel at a discounted rate for a total of 75 days. Lawrence left in 2014, and Brad Gross, the former Harbor Director, retired the day after the audit was released.

WHAT’S NEXT: More audit reports are scheduled to be released this year. Waters said no punitive charges are expected, but the District Attorney may seek to determine if fraud was involved in the program.—Matt Cortina

CUSD Board Approves 2017-2018 School Calendar, Model for Future Calendars THE LATEST: After much debate and heated public comment, the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees voted 5-2 Wednesday night to approve an Aug. 22 start date for the 2017-2018 academic calendar.

CUSD students began school early this year on Aug. 25 following a March 2015 vote by the district board to adjust the academic calendar. The board also voted at that time to begin the upcoming 2016-2017 year on Aug. 15.

Those calendar approvals drew vocal opposition from some parents who criticized the lack of input and reasoning for the switch. The board responded to that criticism by forming a School Calendar Committee tasked with making a recommendation for the 2017-2018 academic calendar.

The 37-member committee engaged residents with three public forums, input collected via email and a phone survey of 436 CUSD families.

The Calendar Committee proposed four options for the 2017-2018 calendar Wednesday night: Option A: Aug. 15-May 31, Option B: Aug. 22-June 7, Option C: Aug. 28-June 13, and Option D: Sept.

5-June 20. Staff did not endorse Option D and recommended the board approve Option B. “We believe this is a compromise for the parents and families who have expressed their desire for a post-Labor Day start,” Vital said, adding that polls showed 75

percent of respondents were satisfied with this year’s Aug. 25 start date.

Summer Trolley Service Begins Next Month THE LATEST: Summer trolley services will be returning to Dana Point next month with a new look and a new schedule.

Passengers can use the trolley for a free ride to multiple locations around the city seven days a week beginning on Friday, June 17. The trolley began its services in 2015 with weekend lifts. In January, the City Council authorized the staff to submit a grant that would allow the expansion.

Similar to last year’s route, the PCH trolley will run from Capistrano County Beach at Coast Highway/Beach Road/Palisades Drive in Capistrano Beach to the Monarch St. Regis and the Ritz Carlton, where it will connect with the Laguna Beach trolley.

New stops include Golden Lantern/ Del Prado, PCH/ Silver Lantern and Dana Point Library. The new Harbor Shuttle service will connect with the PCH Trolley at the Golden Lantern and Dana Point Harbor Drive intersection.

Riders are able to access real-time PCH trolley and Harbor Shuttle locations as well as wait times by visiting www.dptrolley.com.

WHAT’S NEXT: There are tentative plans in the works in San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente to use grant money to launch a tri-city trolley system in 2017.

Bridge Demolition to Close PCH Next Thursday THE LATEST: The demolition of the bridge over Pacific Coast Highway will close traffic from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to an Orange County Transportation Authority press release. There will be a temporary signalized crosswalk immediately south of the existing bridge location, and there will be local access only. The bridge is located around the 34600 block of Coast Highway in Capistrano Beach, near Surfside Inn. WHAT’S NEXT: “After demolition, there will be open access on reduced lanes during other activities,” the release stated.

The last event, “Animal Adventures” on August 11, features a live animal demonstration by Terri Hernandez of Adventure in Science.

Look for New Public Parking Signs

Additional public parking signs are springing up in the Lantern District. Look for blue signs with a big “P” to guide you to public parking locations.

To increase public parking and encourage shared parking, the city is leasing private lots to make them public parking.

Look for the “P” on PCH, Del Prado, Violet Lantern and Golden Lantern.

The City Council has approved leases for evening public parking at the Taco Bell center, evening and weekends at the Post Office, and all hours at the Community House. Public parking is also available at the Meridian Building where Luxe Restaurant is located. The cost to lease all these spaces is less than the estimated cost to construct a parking structure single parking space (approximately $40,000 per space).

In addition, new on-street parking on Del Prado adjacent to Ralphs Supermarket was added with the completion of street improvements. These actions have increased the available public parking inventory by over 130 spaces. The city says it is actively working on more locations to add close to 100 more spaces.

In a related action, the city says it isworking with residents to deter Lantern District visitors and workers from parking in residential areas by implementing a Preferential Parking District on the inland side of PCH, starting near the newly opened and popular Craft House Restaurant.

Measure H and Measure I Meeting

Dana Point Library Gets Small Renovations The library will be closed from Friday, May 27, until the following Tuesday, May 31, so that the wood siding can be removed and termite tenting completed.

On May 31, patrons can use the side door closest to Niguel Road as the front door will be closed. Parking will be very limited as construction materials will be staged in the parking lot. The bookstore will be closed from May 28 until June 13 and cannot take book donations during this period. The Friends and Librarians said they are excited about the changes to cement board siding in earthen tones and new automated doors as they will give the library

Design Competition Needs Online Judges Dana Point residents are being asked to judge a design competition. Raintree Partners asked students at Dana Hills High School to present digital artwork focusing on two themes: Lanterns in the Lantern District, and Faces of Dana Point.

More than 100 submissions were received for the event, which was a part of the Art Walk. A banner showcasing the 24 finalists was recently placed on Coast Highway. Students and residents can vote for their favorite submission at www.pradowest.com.

Winners of the contest will receive $1,000 in scholarship money ($500 first place, $300 second, $200 third). A winner will be announced in early June.

Ocean Institute Family Nights Open for Reservations The Ocean Institute’s series of Family Science Nights will return on June 30, but reservations are open now.

Family Science Nights allow families to interact with local scientists at the Samueli Conference Center. Each night follows a different theme and includes a presentation by a special guest speaker and an activity for kids.

The theme on June 20 is “The Science of Fireworks,” presented by the University of California, Irvine Chemistry Outreach Club, where families can learn how fire-

The South Orange County School of the Arts (SOCSA) will celebrate its 20th anniversary on June 4 at the Porthole Theater at Dana Hills High School. To commemorate two decades in service, the annual year-end showcase will be performed.

All of SOCSA’s departments: vocal music, instrumental music, dance, drama, theater and visual arts will be represented in this year’s showcase. The event will also honor SOCSA’s founder, Robb Rigg.

Rigg, a theater and dance teacher at Dana Hills High School, started SOCSA in 1996 with a class of 150 students. Since, SOCSA has trained more than 7,000 students.

“I have so many incredible memories of students, staff, parents and administration from that first board meeting approving the SOCSA Academy to participating in so many outstanding performances, to seeing graduates on Broadway, on the ‘big screen’ at the movies, hearing them on the radio, seeing them on TV, and nominated for major awards. It is humbling how much talent goes through DHHS and SOCSA,” Rigg said in a statement.

Pre-show entertainment begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Porthole Theater air Dana Hills high School. Performances begin at 6 p.m., and there will be a raffle with a chance to win a three-night trip to New York City with theater tickets and airfare covered.

ou’re home, but you’re not really home,” the old colonel said. “In my case, and other vets like me, I keep flying certain missions. I keep flying those over and over and over again in my head.

What if I’d done this, what if I’d done that?

And then I think about my friends that I lost all the time.”

The old colonel wears a baseball hat that says “Vietnam Veteran” on it, with colorful ribbons that indicate wartime triumphs and bravery stitched between the words.

“I wear this hat a lot, and anywhere I go wearing this hat, people will come up and say ‘Thank you for your service.’ Historically, they know what happened to us when we got home,” the old colonel said.

What happened when he got home from Vietnam—he, Col. Joe Snyder from the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, helicopter pilot who ran 1,200 missions in 13 months, who spent 25 more years in the Marines, and who, yes, was your Dana Point two-term mayor some decade or so ago—what happened when he returned from fighting in Vietnam was the deafening hum of radio silence.

“We got off the aircraft at El Toro, and there was no one there to say ‘Welcome home.’ There was no band. You got off the aircraft, you grabbed your gear and just kind of disappeared.”

Snyder flew back to his family in Asheville, North Carolina, after a day or two in Santa Ana. Not seeing his family, not being home, not being away from war—nothing could free him.

“We landed at the airport in Asheville, and I couldn’t get off the plane. I don’t know. I couldn’t get off the plane. My family was inside waiting, and the crew finally came back and said, ‘You gotta get off,’ and so I did, and I met the family and everything, but that’s kind of when I went into silence. I didn’t talk about the war for 15 years, and that’s not uncommon.”

Seated beside the old colonel one recent morning before Memorial Day was Jessica Nguyen, who started to speak about art.

“They always have a story, and we consider art a therapy that they can express what they cannot say or whatever they’ve experienced on the battlefield,” she said.

Nguyen’s father was silent about war, too. It took him a decade to talk about the seven years he spent as a prisoner of war in a North Vietnamese prison.

“They tortured him,” she said, but added that “it was the same journey every war soldier has to go through.”

Because Nguyen’s father was a POW, he was treated as a political prisoner and the U.S. sponsored the family’s relocation to the U.S., to California. Nguyen says they were first offered the program in the mid’80s, but her father thought it was a trap set by the North Vietnamese and so they waited years until he could confirm the offer was legitimate.

Years later, Nguyen connected with Snyder, who had moved to Dana Point, at a Vietnam War memorial ceremony. Together, they founded Torch 1975, a Capistrano Beach-based nonprofit organization with the goal of providing services for returning veterans. They learned immediately the power that creating and sharing art has to give veterans a voice.

“You have the emotions inside, but if you can do something to express those emotions without having to talk to a psychiatrist is extremely beneficial,” Snyder said. His comment is an allusion to the truth that veterans rarely seek professional help—it shatters their tough self-image and, oh, a therapist wouldn’t understand

anyway—but that bred bravado, a seen-itdone-it callous, is what directly contributes to 22 veterans committing suicide every single day in the U.S. “The more veterans that we ran into, we saw the benefits of art whether it was photography or painting or ceramics,” Snyder said. “There’s all different kinds of art and it all helps. If you’re gong to make a vase or something, you get involved and then you forget about everything else.”

Torch 1975 holds popular monthly art classes that are free for veterans and their spouses. They also hold an annual art competition, where veterans and their family members can submit their work, and share the stories behind their pieces.

Making art is meditative therapy; sharing it is group therapy—and it all helps, Nguyen says.

“This is veterans helping veterans,” she said. “It’s a unique experience. When we had the awards last year, we had full house, and the majority of the audience were veterans. When the artists tell a story about their piece, you can hardly hear a pin drop because every veteran has a different story and the artists convey different aspects of the battlefield.”

Nguyen remembers an entry from a veteran who was 100 percent blinded in combat, and who painted a portrait of a lighthouse. Snyder remembers the story of a veteran who used art to give him a new life.

“He’d done about four tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and every tour he had this friend with him,” Snyder said. “Then they came home after the last tour, and about 30 days after that, his friend committed suicide.

“This was a guy who they’d just given up on, and then he went to this photo class, and as soon as he looked through the lens, it reminded him of looking though the barrel of a rifle, and it clicked.

He made remarkable progress,” Snyder said. “Art saved his life.”

In their contests and classes, Snyder and Nguyen have seen sculptures, paintings, ceramics, photography, comic books and other media in all different styles made by people of different skill levels.

There are veterans from World War II all the way up to Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans. The organization also provides scholarships to children of veterans, and buys travel tickets for veterans so they can visit their families on breaks.

Organizations like Torch 1975 mark a very different cultural landscape for returning veterans, Snyder says, and it’s important to continue to cultivate a culture of acceptance for those returning from war and their families.

Snyder, the old colonel, remembered walking into some sterile restaurant in Santa Ana just three days after leaving the battlefield in Vietnam and looking up at the TV. After listening for a few minutes, he was resigned to believe, “They just don’t give a damn.” Now, at the end of the conversation, Snyder points to a Starbucks employee in a camouflage shirt making a drink in front of an American flag valance.

He is silent but nods, using pictures, not words, to express what he, the veteran, is feeling.

Letters to the Editor STOP BULLYING YOUR NEIGHBORS AND LOCAL BUSINESSES CAREY REYNOLDS, Dana Point

I’m sure I’m not the only Dana Point resident who has felt some level of confusion over Measure H and Measure I. As I always do when it comes to elections, I’ve actively sought out information and attempted to sift through the rhetoric in order to make an educated decision on which measure to support. I can sum up my overall sentiment on what is going on here in our own community in one word—horrified.

I’m honestly shocked at the behavior being exhibited and encourage the residents of Dana Point to take a deep breath and remember that your neighbors will still be your neighbors after this election. It’s OK to have differing views, but it’s not OK to use hateful and divisive language and tactics to bully your neighbors. Just in the past few weeks I’ve seen evidence of the Measure H supporters calling for boycotts of local businesses who display a sign supporting Measure I. How can you possibly say you’re supportive of our community while actively hoping that local business owners—the heart and soul of our community—fail?

I know there are many well-intentioned residents on both sides of this issue who wouldn’t stoop to that low level of behavior.

I encourage you to speak out and demand more mature behavior from the leadership of these organizations (to be clear, I am specifically referring to the leadership of Measure H supporters… those of you calling for boycotts of local businesses and who created the ridiculously obnoxious and certainly hateful Hitler video).

Stop tearing this community apart. And to the individual who created the Hitler video (I pray that there are not multiple evil masterminds in our community who would dream up such a hateful tactic), you should be ashamed of yourself. You should identify yourself and publicly apologize.

Regardless of where you personally stand on Measure H and Measure I, your neighbors will still be your neighbors after this is over, and we should treat each other with grace and respect.

cial consequences and stops the progress of a long-awaited and needed Town Center.

I don’t believe my Dana Point neighbors and friends who know me and may disagree with my position think I am hideous, disgusting or deplorable. Yet a total stranger has branded me as such along with anyone else who opposes Measure H. I would like to make it very clear that unlike some Measure H proponents, those of us who are opposed to H and in favor of I do not refuse admittance to people with opposing viewpoints to neighborhood meetings; we do not confront or threaten neighbors who put up signs opposing our viewpoint; we do not shout personal insults at supporters of the opposing view; we do not launch Facebook attacks calling for boycotts of any business who puts up a sign opposing our view and we do not trespass on private property to remove signs in support of the opposing view unless instructed to do so by the property owner.

All of which I have personally witnessed or heard about.

We are fortunate to live in a country that protects and defends our right to free speech. We can disagree, and we can make a personal decision to withhold our patronage and support from those with whom we disagree; however, no one should be intimidated or be made to feel fearful of any consequences either personal or financial for exercising that right.

'THE BUSINESS OF RECOVERY' COMES TO DANA POINT TAKE ACTION DANA POINT

Most of us have family members or friends who suffer from alcoholism and/ or drug addiction, and we know these debilitating illnesses can take a tremendous mental, emotional and physical toll on our loved ones and their families. While we have nothing but respect and compassion for those who are suffering from the effects of addiction, and applaud and support their efforts to seek recovery, many South County citizens have become increasingly concerned about the proliferation of supervised treatment homes in our residential communities.

The California Health and Safety Code states that cities must have sufficient facilities “as are commensurate with local need” but many beach cities are finding that there is a growing concentration of these homes, grossly disproportionate to local need based on national addiction and recovery statistics. In Dana Point, for instance, we know of at least 80 such homes (based on neighbors’ reporting) and are told the actual number is closer to 100.

There is no way to know the exact number because neither our city nor state requires registration. Only 17 of such homes in Dana Point have a State license. In calculating the “local need” of these facilities in Dana Point, based upon our population of

34,000 (83 percent over 14 years of age) compared to national rates of addiction and those seeking treatment, Dana Point should have a maximum of 13 supervised recovery homes. That’s a conservative number, as it assumes that every person in recovery would undergo a 90-day treatment session in a six-person home. In theory, if our entire population of addicts received successful treatment, eventually the 13 homes would close. “Local need” arguments aside, neighbors report that many of the people receiving treatment in the 80 to 100 homes that have popped up in Dana Point are not Dana Point, or even California residents.

San Clemente (population 65,000) has an estimated 80 homes and San Juan Capistrano (population 36,000) has an estimated 31 homes. Both of these cities have enacted moratoriums and have taken responsible steps in an attempt to regulate. Dana Point’s City Council has not yet taken any such steps, which might explain the unusual concentration in Dana Point.

Regretfully, Christopher Wright’s article, in which he heralds the Land of Enchantment as his destination on his retirement from the Dana Point Library, fails to identify the “certain town off the beaten path” to which he is headed. My wife and I met at the University of New Mexico in the early 1950s and travelled the far corners of the delightful State on weekends and college vacations. We continued as frequent visitors to New Mexico during the half century since we took up residence in Laguna Niguel, now Dana Point, after six years in the Marine Corps.

Were it not for the South Coast being the most ideal place to live in our estimation, based on having seen a good part of the world, we would certainly understand that Wright could be lured to some specially enchanting place in New Mexico.

Hopefully, he will reveal that to the readers of his column.

T

he curse of the R-rated action film strikes again. Screenwriter Shane Black’s third feature as a director after the divisive Iron Man 3 (2013) and the cult classic Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (2005) is the retro, action-filled comedy, The Nice Guys.

Black knows his action sequences, his buddy cops and his easy going atmosphere, as seen most famously with the Lethal Weapon movies. But despite his record and big name cast, his new movie barely made it to No. 4 at the boxoffice.

In 1977, L.A. independent private investigator Holland March (Ryan Gosling) is hired by elderly Mrs. Glenn (Lois Smith) to find her niece who is missing. At the same time, Jackson Healey (Russell Crowe) gets paid to beat up people who are causing problems, and his most recent client is Amelia Kuttner (Margaret Qualley).

Coincidently, Amelia hired Jackson to get rid of Holland, who she thinks is following her. As Jackson and Holland meet, Amelia goes missing, people start dying and a porno is linked to everything.

Kim Basinger and Matt Bomer co-star, and Angourie Rice plays Gosling’s precocious daughter. The Nice Guys is more Chinatown (1974) and L.A. Confidential (1997) than it is Lethal Weapon, making Crowe’s and Basinger’s casting more appropriate.

Though the setting is the ’70s and it is comedic, the noir homage is undeniable. Gosling and Crowe are an unexpected, great pairing with fresh dialogue, though Rice’s adolescent sidekick borders between irritating and endearing. All the same, Black’s film is still worth the ticket. DP

Doheny Blues Brings the Heat to Dana Point Annual blues festival rocks Doheny State Beach overs of jazz, blues and rock and roll flocked to Doheny State Beach last weekend for the 19th annual Doheny Blues Festival. The two-day festival took place May 21-22 and featured a wide array of artists playing on three stages—the

intimate Backporch stage, Sailor Jerry stage and Doheny main stage. Dozens of artists performed throughout the weekend, including Lynyrd Skynyrd, Brian Setzer’s Rockabilly Riot, Aaron Neville and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Next year marks the festival’s 20th anniversary. DP

Summer outdoor concert series returns to tri-cities

Live tunes reverberate throughout the county’s beachside and historic parks as the cities of Dana Point, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano host their annual, free-of-charge, seasonal concerts. Below is a list of this year’s musical offerings. You’ll want to mark your calendars; this summertime lineup is one for the record books.

Dana Point Summer Concert Series July 10: All hail Southern rock as Skynyrd Reloaded pays homage to the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers known worldwide for their beloved anthem “Sweet Home Alabama,” while SouthBound recreates the mix of rock, blues, country and jazz renderings of the Allman Brothers.

July 17: You won’t stop believin’ in the power of ’80s rock classics when the high-energy Journey tribute band Lights takes the stage.

You will also have “More than a Feeling” of nostalgia as BOSTYX—a Boston and Styx mash-up band closes out the day’s musical offerings.

July 24: The Tricia Freeman Band pulls from musical influences of Cline, Raitt and Joplin as its powerhouse lead brings country ballads and delta blues to the stage. A tribute to the American rockers behind “Hotel California” and “Tequila Sunrise” follows with Peaceful Eagles.

July 31: This week’s performers—Fan Halen and Led ZepAgain—are regarded as the best for their precision and the near-perfect reproductions of rock classics like Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher” and “Panama” and Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.”

August 7: Las Vegas headliners of yesteryear are revived as Raymond Michael’s Casino All Stars sing the 1960s hits of Elvis Presley, Engelbert Humperdink and Tom Jones. Then, Hot August Night salutes Neil Diamond.

August 14: Performers rooted in the Southern tradition of country, Brent Payne and Craig

Wayne Boyd, hit the Sea Terrace Stage. Boyd is the seventh season winner of The Voice.

August 21: Savor the Band honors Carlos Santana’s musical fusion of rock and Latin American sounds while The Fabulous Ultratones, known for synthesizing hits across musical genres and generations, closes out ana oint’s final summer concert.

Concerts are held from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Sea Terrace Park. The final concert is at Heritage Park. A free shuttle runs from Dana Hills High School to Sea Terrace concerts. Parking is available at the Salt Creek Beach lot. The Dana Point trolley services the Salt Creek lot.

San Clemente Beach Concerts July 7: Eighties cover band Wigs & Ties, known for high-energy renditions of the decade’s hits, will rock the socks off beachconcertgoers even if they aren’t wearing any.

July 21: The tried-and-true veterans of blues, Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers, bring a blend of Chicago-grit, West Coast swing, jazz, R&B and rock and roll blues to the beach.

August 4: The fused sounds of Common Sense—a mix of small-town vibes, Southern California attitudes and reggae-rock inspirations—close out this beachside concert series.

Performances are located north of the San Clemente Pier. They kick off at 6 p.m. Chicken and barbecue rib dinners are available for $8. Parking is available at the Pier Bowl lot and on the street.

San Juan Summer Nites June 15: From “Fortunate Son” to “Proud Mary,” the faithful-recreationists of Creedence Relived will transport listeners to a 1960s Creedence Clearwater Revival concert.

July 20: It’s all in the name: The Trip. This rock and roll cover band takes concert-goers on a journey through time with hits from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and ’00s.

August 17: Get your dancin’ shoes ready.

The Blue Breeze Band is bringing the best of Motown, R&B, soul, funk, jazz and blues.

September 21: The purveyor of today’s hottest country hits, Pickleback Shine, will keep attendees dancing, singing and stomping.

Shows are held the third Wednesday of the month at Historic Town Center Park. All concerts start at 6 p.m.

A short guide to Southern California’s oddest landmarks

Road trips are synonymous with summer. If you’re hitting the open road this season, stay on the lookout for Southern California oddities. You’ll find the World Famous Crochet Museum in Joshua Tree and the World’s Largest Surfboard—etched in the Guinness Book of World Records for “Most People Riding a Surfboard”—in Huntington Beach. So, pull out the map and lay out your course. You never know what you’ll find along the way. Here are two peculiar landmarks to spark your oddity interest.

Salvation Mountain

Watts Towers

Location: Niland, California Venturing east to Palm Desert or Phoenix? Make time for a pit stop or a day excursion to Imperial County’s infamous Salvation Mountain.

The mountain—a towering man-made terrain of hay bales, adobe clay, tree branches, various scraps found in the desert and thousands of gallons of colorful paint—was a labor of unfailing faith. Built over the course of 25 years by Leonard Knight, Salvation Mountain has become a destination for global visitors. It, too, has been documented by The Discovery Channel and National Geographic. Guests can walk along the yellow-brick road and climb to the top of the late Knight’s 50-foot vibrant beacon of love—a work of art dedicated to delivering its creator’s message: “God is love.” Knight died in February 2014 at the age of 82. His legacy lives on, however, through this patchwork wonderland of color in the middle of the Southern California desert.

Location: Los Angeles, California The ity of Angels is filled with oddities and uni ue experiences. ou can hike through the abandoned ruins of the old .A. oo in riffith ark, or explore prehistoric Los Angeles at the La Brea Tar Pits. The options here are endless: giant donuts, walks of fame and a museum dedicated solely to velvet paintings. Perhaps the strangest of all peculiarities is Watts Towers—a collection of 17 major sculptures and the 33-year project undertaken by Sabato “Simon” Watts. The Italian immigrant used simple tools to construct towers, the tallest standing just over 99 feet, which he dubbed “Nuestro Pueblo”—meaning “our town.” These steel structures, simply wire together rebar, were hand-packed with mortar and embellished with mosaic tiles, glass, shells and rock. Public guided tours of this National Register of Historic Places landmark are held Thursday through Sunday. The Watts Tower Arts Center provides a diverse lineup of programming from exhibits and studio workshops to the annual Simon Rodia Watts Towers Jazz Festival in September.

Getting There: If traveling on Interstate 10 from Los Angeles, take CA-86 S just east of Indio. Take a slight left toward CA-195 (marked 66th Avenue E) then a left onto CA-111 S. Follow the road for 43.3 miles, along the eastern end of the Salton Sea, before turning left on Main Street.

Continue onto Beal Road to the destination. If driving through San Diego, take Interstate 8 to El Centro and head north on CA-111 N. On the north end of Brawley the road turns into CA-78. You’ll continue onto CA-111.

Make a right on Main Street and continue traveling on Beal Road until you reach Salvation Mountain.

Getting There: Head north on Interstate 5 past Anaheim and Buena Park.

Near Norwalk, merge onto Interstate 605 heading south. From there, merge onto westbound Interstate 105 and take exit 10 toward Wilmington Avenue. Turn left onto Imperial Highway, followed by a slight right toward Willowbrook Avenue then a right on Wilmington Avenue. Make a left on 112th Street, which becomes Willowbrook Avenue. Finally, turn right onto 107th Street. The destination is on the left—1765 E. 107th Street.

On the Silver Screen Orange County’s family-friendly, open-air cinemas

By Andrea Papagianis-Camacho Warm summer nights were made for movies under the stars. While Orange County’s drive-in movie theaters, circa 1960, may be a thing of the past, cities and art venues throughout the region have filled the summer pastime void with movie-going experiences that rival those of yesteryear.

All summer long, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the City of Dana Point and the Orange County Great Park are projecting Hollywood classics and computer-animated cinema outdoors—free and family-friendly features complete with food trucks, popcorn and sweet theater snacks.

This year’s outdoor theater season kicks off in Dana Point. Each Friday in June, Lantern Bay Park is transformed into an open-air cinema where families pack picnic dinners and munch on popcorn—served free of charge—during fantasy, action and comedy flicks.

On June 3, the inventive animated dramedy Inside Out takes viewers into the mind of Riley, a young girl going through a difficult, life-altering event. This emotional rollercoaster ride sees Riley’s feelings personified. The Good Dinosaur follows a young apatosaurus as he

forms an unlikely friendship with a human on June 10. On June 17, the unspoken legend of Peter Pan is told in Pan. The comedic, yellow creatures from Despicable Me search for a new master to serve in the city’s final summer showing of Minions on June 24.

On weekend nights throughout June and August, family favorites and silver-screen classics will be showcased on Orange County Great Park’s outdoor screen. A ride on the Great Park Balloon—with a 360-degree view of Irvine from 400 feet above ground—or the Great Park carousel segues perfectly into a night of film, food trucks and free family fun.

After an alien race conquers Earth, a fugitive alien and a girl are on the run in the June 4 showing of Home. The family adventure continues on June 11 as Dracula, voiced by Adam Sandler, puts his grandson through monsterin-training boot camp in Hotel Transylvania 2.

Before serving Gru, the super-villain’s famed small, yellow assistants were in search of a master. Their film, Minions, airs on June 18. Everyone’s favorite neighborhood friends—Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus and Lucy—take to the big screen on June 25 in The Peanuts Movie. On July 9, Jack Black’s character, Po, hits the Great Park movie scene with Kung Fu Panda 3.

Romance and drama ensue June 10 as a modern-day princess, Audrey Hepburn, rebels against her duties in the Great Park’s showing of Roman Holiday. n une , silent film actors transition to sound in Gene Kelly’s Singing in the Rain. Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn take to the silver screen June 24 in the showing of Bringing Up Baby—a screwball comedy starring a confused paleontologist and a maddening heiress. The Great Park’s classics are rounded out uly with the 9 film, State Fair.

Returning for its 10th season, Segerstrom Center for the Arts presents Movie Mondays starting July 11 with the classic, hopelessly devoted fan favorite, Grease. The music continues July 18 with the biographical drama, Selena, starring Jennifer Lopez as famed Tejano music star Selena Quintanilla. Moviegoers can spread Christmas cheer in July by singing loud for all to hear with the July 25 showing of Elf and take a day away from responsibilities with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off on August 1. The summer movie extravaganza ends in epic fashion with the Jim Henson-directed, David Bowie-starring fantastical film, Labyrinth, on August 8.

Started as a cheese shop, The Cellar has exploded into a community gathering spot with craft beer, great wine, live music, a diverse food menu and, of course, cheese.

The Cellar has carved out a niche on Del Mar, where locals and visitors alike meet at communal tables and toast one another.

The Cellar has a rotating beer program, which ensures quality brew is being poured on tap and from bottles year-round. “We try to keep current with all the trends, and we’re trying to create trends ourselves,” said Eric Snyder, general manager at The Cellar. The drinks complement a rich menu that takes risks and also revels in comfort. Either way, Snyder says the response has been excellent. “We are very supported,” he said. “The locals take care of us.”

Turk’s Bar & Restaurant DANA POINT

It’s hard not to fall in love with El Adobe when you step into its historic building.

The bar area is set off by old wood beams, vintage paintings and a beautiful bar top. Drinks are served simply from well-skilled bartenders, and the drink list includes wines, beer, spirits and cocktails from Mexico, the U.S. and around the world. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can book a dinner in the wine cellar, which has been repurposed from what used to be a jail. History abounds at El Adobe.

A guide to Southern California’s not-your-dad’s camping sites

By Alex Paris Whether you’re looking for an escape or an adventure, there are a number of places in a world of their own that are surprisingly close to South Orange County. Sprinkled throughout Southern California are hidden camping treasures offering a unique take on the outdoors. Camp on the grounds of a working family farm south of Temecula or opt for a challenging hike to a removed forest camp located northeast of Pasadena in Big Santa Anita Canyon. Whatever camping experience you are looking for, we’ve compiled a few options to provide a running start to your summer outdoor excursions.

The Holidays

Despite its proximity, the San Clemente State Beach campground feels isolated from the city and contains all the ingredients of an idyllic beachside vacation. The four 1960s-style vintage trailers, known collectively as “The Holidays,” transport guests to a time completely secluded from the present. But you don’t have to sacrifice modern convenience here—trailers come stocked with all camping necessities except food and firewood. They also have optional electricity and air conditioning. A stash of indoor and outdoor games is available to occupy campers as they await a grilled, stove-cooked or fire-roasted dinner. Booking is open between two days and seven months ahead of time online at www.theholidaysca.com, and due to popularity, interested guests should book well in advance.

Rates are $209 per night with a maximum of five people per trailer, eight per site.

Enchanting Blueberry Farm

Sample fruit straight from the farmer’s hands while camping at one of seven tent sites in an area that’s reminiscent of Orange County in its more agrarian days. Just 20 miles east of Oceanside, this quaint fruit farm provides natural shade and water for certain campsites and a shared bathroom and shower for all. This is a great base camp for biking country roads, hiking trails or wine tasting. Relax with a picnic at picturesque Myrtle Creek Botanical Gardens, which has free entry and famous pies, or pick strawberries or watermelon at Kenny’s Strawberry Farm, offering $10 tours. Camp for $65 a night. Maximum four persons per site. Book on www.hipcamp.com.

Sturtevant Camp

You’ll have to hike your gear to reach this verdant historical retreat—unless, of course, you hire a pack mule to carry it the four miles through Angeles National Forest to camp. The trek’s reward is charming wood cabins enveloped in forest and hiking trails far from any cell phone signal.

There’s a shocking amount of creature comforts for such a remote place, including hot showers, an industrial kitchen with refrigerators, tableware and two fireplace rooms. There are games such as badminton and ping pong, but also enough trail to fuel an adventure without them. Two- to six-person cabins can be booked on www.hipcamp.com for $80 or $120 per night. For cabins up to eight persons, book on www.sturtevantcamp.com at a rate of $40 per person per night.

The Gypsy Escape

If your creative juices could use a refill or your vision needs something uniquely vibrant to shake off the cobwebs, this might be the place. Decorated by an artist, this eclectic, glamorous camp in Topanga Canyon is adjacent to a trail system leading to mountainous vistas and state parks. Though surrounded by nature, it’s just minutes from the beach and downtown Topanga. The cozy compound includes all necessities plus an outdoor shower and tub, a fire ring, daypacks for hiking, boogie boards, bedding, a full kitchen and modern conveniences like heat and internet scattered throughout the three dwellings. Rates run about $180 per night for up to two people, and an additional $40 per person for up to eight. A $99 cleaning and service fee will be charged from www.airbnb.com.

Dogs Are Great, But They Don’t Belong Everywhere

O

ne of our family members is a furry, four-legged, rescued friend. My kids love dogs. I grew up with dogs.

We are dog people. But, our dog does not go with us everywhere. Dog owner entitlement seems to be on the rise.

As my two little boys and I recently pulled into the parking lot of a local restaurant I noticed an older couple on the patio with their medium-sized dog lying next to them. I didn’t think much about it. It’s become quite common to see dogs of all sizes and breeds with their owners inside stores, on restaurant patios and in most public areas.

By Elizabeth a table outside, on the Bottiaux patio. I quickly dashed inside to retrieve condiments, drinks and napkins. I was inside for less than one minute, when my older son came running in to tell me his brother was crying.

I returned to find the dog owner holding my five-year-old’s hand and apologizing.

Confused, I immediately assumed that he’d gotten scared while I was away and had started crying. Just as the mom guilt washed over me, the woman explained that her dog had bitten my son.

I did my best to remain calm. All eyes were on me. I could feel the weight of an entire restaurant watching me. I hugged my scared little guy. I pulled up his shorts to check the chomp. There was a definite bite mark. Skin was broken and hints of blood threatened to surface.

The dog owners apologized and recounted their version of what had occurred. My unassuming son had headed to the nearby trash can. He’d started out walking, then had run the last few steps to the trash. The startled dog lashed out at him.

The owners said their dog was known

to have certain fears and would randomly lunge at people. This aggressive animal with a checkered past was brought to an enclosed area with many people nearby.

My son, who had in no way interacted with or provoked this animal, and was minding his own business, was attacked.

An onlooker stopped by the patio as she was leaving the restaurant. To my surprise she was not concerned by the fact that my young son had been bitten.

No. She was there to console… the dog!

She cooed over the dog, while petting it’s head. Really? My child was attacked and this woman wanted to soothe the attacker!

Unreal. When did furry friends become more important than humans?

Before leaving the restaurant, I obtained the dog owner’s contact information and reported the incident to the manager. Although, obviously unenforced, the manager confirmed that dogs are prohibited on the patio. It was negligent of these owners to bring their aggressive dog to a restaurant.

Children should be taught to always ask the owner’s permission before petting a dog. If an owner says they’d rather not let my child pet their dog, I respect—even commend—the owner for setting that boundary. For safety and sanitary reasons, dogs simply shouldn’t be allowed everywhere with humans. Authentic, card-carrying service dogs are a different matter.

Dog ownership isn’t just a privilege. It’s a responsibility.

Dolphins Blanked by JSerra in First Round of Playoffs The top of the JSerra batting order has proven it is as tough a group as any in Orange County high school baseball this season. They consistently get on base, grind out at-bats and make game-changing swings.

The top-3 in the Lions’ order flexed its muscle against visiting Dana Hills in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 Championships on May 20.

JSerra senior shortstop and No. 3 hitter Chase Strumpf clubbed a breaking pitch that was left over the middle of the plate

by Dolphins junior starter Hans Crouse in the third inning for a three-run home run that proved to be the deciding factor in a 3-0 victory.

Dolphins head coach Tom Faris made a bit of a gamble at the start of the postseason, starting senior pitcher Kayl Cota in a wild card play-in game against Great Oak on May 18 instead of giving the ball to Crouse, the team’s ace. The gamble paid off, as Cota delivered a complete game gem and allowed Crouse to face the topranked team in Division 1 two days later.

Crouse breezed his way through the first two innings, recording four strikeouts. Crouse even got two quick outs to start the third inning, but then the JSerra lineup flipped to the top of the order.

Junior third baseman Royce Lewis, the Lions’ leadoff man, collected JSerra’s first hit and promptly stole second base.

Senior Brady Shockey then worked a twoout walk, bringing Strumpf to the plate.

Crouse got ahead of Strumpf in the count, 1-2, but the senior UCLA commit came through with the clutch home run.

The game featured one of the better pitching matchups in the first round, as the Lions countered with senior Collin Quinn, a side-arm pitcher who entered the game with a perfect 9-0 record as a starter.

The Dolphins had their chances against Quinn and advanced runners to scoring position in three different innings. Dana Hills’ best chance came in the third inning when senior Max Mircovich singled, stole second and advanced to third on an infield single. Shawn Kany then hit a hard ground ball to the left side, but Lewis made a diving grab to his left to end the threat.

golfers had good showings. Feagler, the defending CIF-SS Individual champion, finished in a tie for fi fth place after carding a 73 (+1). Brothers finished tied for ninth following his round of 77 (+5).

The two were set to play at Brookside Country Club in Pasadena for the CIF SoCal Golf Championships on May 26.

Results were not available at press time. A handful of golfers competing in the SoCal Championships will earn a berth into the California State Golf Championships on June 1.

Senior Jake Ogden placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:11.00.

Senior Mason Coppi took third in the 3,200-meter, posting a time of 9:03.19.

Sophomore standout Jack Landgraf finished fourth in the 3,200 with a time of 9:04.33.

Junior Jackson Rager’s throw of 47-07.25 in the shot put earned him a ninth-place finish.

In the 800-meter run, junior Jennifer Daly placed fourth (2:12.27).

The Dolphins 4x100-meter relay team of Daly, Jillian Hutchison, Ximena Bustos and Hailey Ray placed sixth (3:54.04).

urfers from San Clemente and Dana Point finished with high marks at the National Scholastic Surfing Association West Coast Championships at Huntington Beach Pier on May 19-22.

Solid 6- to 8-foot swells delivered pumping surf to the championships on the first two days of the event. Though the swell diminished by the end of the competition, surfers were marveling over the ability for the waves to seemingly turn on at championship time every year.

Kade Matson won in the Open Juniors, and finished second in Open Mens. He was named the Day One Performer of the Day; had the highest scoring total with a 18.83 out of 20 in the Explorer Boys Round One Competition; and had the highest scoring wave with a perfect-10 in the same event.

Matson finished sixth in Explorer Juniors and fourth in Explorer Boys.

Meanwhile, San Clemente’s Kirra Pinkerton took home Day Two Performer of the Day honors. Over the course of the weekend, she logged the highest scoring wave in any final event, with a 9.67 in the Open Womens Finals. That wave played a part en route to her taking the highest scoring total in the finals, with an 18 out of 20 in the Open Womens Final, which subsequently gave her the trophy in that category. Pinkerton also took first place in the Open Girls competition.

San Clemente’s dominance was affirmed when Jett Schilling was named the Performer of the Day on Day Three. Schilling took first place in the Open Boys competition.

Samantha Sibley, of (of course) San Clemente, had a busy weekend herself— she took first place in Explorer Womens, second place in Explorer Girls and fourth place in Open Girls.

And rounding out San Clemente’s sterling performances was Crosby Colapinto, who took first in the Junior Airshow Championships and second place in Open Juniors; and Taj Lindblad, who took first

Other San Clemente top finishers were Cole Houshmand (third place in Open Juniors), Nico Coli (fourth place in Open Boys), Dane Matson (second place in Open Mini Groms and fourth place in Explorer Menehuene and Explorer Mini Groms), and Sawyer Lindblad (fourth place in Explorer Super Girls) Not to be outshone, however, Dana Point’s standout surfer Bethany Zelasko brought in terrific results over the weekend. Zelasko took second place in Open Womens and second place in Explorer Womens.

Next up for the champion groms is the NSSA National Interscholastic College, High School and Middle School Championships from June 11-13 at Salt Creek in Dana Point. The national airshow, explorer and open championships will be held at the end of June at the Huntington Beach Pier. DP
