Five things Dana Point should know this week South Coast Water District Approves Public Outreach Spending

THE LATEST: The South Coast Water District Directors voted in favor of phase two of the public outreach with the Doheny Ocean Desalination project.

Phase two implements a community participation plan, essentially public education and outreach. It was approved for $226,770 and an amendment up to $22,671—10 percent contingency—if required.

General Manager Andy Brunhart said part of the phase included establishing branding for the project, creating separate documents for frequently asked questions, creating a target list and schedule for one year of community presentations, beginning to develop project tour plans and more.

Director Dennis Erdman voted against the action and said the district was “heavily spending.”

“This project is a costly project and we’re talking about adding $250,000 more to that expenditure list for public outreach,” Erdman said.

He added he would like to see the project go into the environmental impact report stage and the evaluation stage before the public outreach portion.

Erdman referred to the public outreach as “cheerleading” to which President Wayne Rayfield disagreed.

City Fills New Deputy Manager Position with County Executive THE LATEST: A week after City Council approved a new deputy city manager position, city staff announced the role has been filled by current Orange County Chief Operating Officer Mark Denny.

The role will require Denny to manage the city’s community services and parks as well as the public works and engineering departments. Denny previously worked as the Director of OC Parks, and was the Dana Point Harbor interim director following former director Brad Gross’s retirement.

Denny pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor election fraud charge in 1996 when he served as an Assembly staff aide.

It was also reportedly found that Denny and other county executives played a part in approving 13 no-bid consulting contracts—nearly $1 million to one consulting firm—according to audit data obtained by the Voice of OC. When Dana Point Times asked for the report, the County Auditor’s office said the audit report had been purged from the system by the department’s former leadership, and that new Auditor-Controller Eric Woolery has been trying to track it down.

Brian Lochrie, president of Communications Lab, which handles Dana Point’s public relations, said “no audit ever found Mark directed or approved any no-bid contracts.”

City Manager Doug Chotkevys told Council they added the new position to accommodate multiple recent and upcoming retirements on staff. Director of Public Works Brad Fowler will be retiring at the end of the year, and Chotkevys said he plans to retire in a couple of years.

Chotkevys said the process for replacing the Community Services Director began when the city learned that former director Kevin Evans was retiring last spring. Since then, an interim director has been in place.

He said the hiring process began about a month ago and they considered “probably three, maybe four, maybe five candidates,” including current city employees.

“When Mr. Denny indicated his interest, the list narrowed down a bit,” Chotkevys said.

“Mark has proven himself to be a strong leader in his service at the county,” Chotkevys said in a statement. “Under his leadership, OC Parks acquired 20,000 acres of pristine open space at no cost to the taxpayers. Additionally, he raised the profile of OC Parks winning dozens of national awards.”

During the Council meeting, the new position’s descriptions were discussed, but there wasn’t any mention of the hiring process or the candidates.

Denny’s annual salary will be $192,000.

City Launches Partnership with Lyft THE LATEST: The city has entered into a partnership with the ride-sharing service Lyft.

Dana Point announced it will begin a public-private partnership with Lyft on Oct. 1 to enhance public safety and promote local businesses.

“This creative agreement, spearheaded by our City’s Economic Development Department, will have significant benefits to the residents and businesses of Dana Point,” said Dana Point Mayor John Tomlinson in a release.

Lyft works when a user downloads the app on their phone, chooses their destination, and a driver picks them up.

The agreement will allow new users to receive up to $20 in ride credits, and $10 for every new rider will be donated to the Ocean Institute.

At participating restaurants throughout the city, if customers show their Lyft receipt, they can receive a 10 percent discount. The participating restaurants include Jack’s, Craft House, The Brig, Bonjour Café, The Point, Luxe, Stillwater, Waterman’s, 180BLU, enoSTEAK, 33North, AVEO, Club 19, Stonehill Tavern, The Vue Restaurant, Overvue Lounge, Doheny Surf and MoQuila.

CUSD Discuss WIGs for Current School Year THE LATEST: The majority of Wednesday night’s Capistrano Unified School District meeting was dedicated to discussing the district’s Wildly Important Goals (WIGs) for the 2016-2017 school year.

WIGs concentrate on three main topics in the district, and are broken down to concentrate on certain elements including teaching and learning, communications and facilities.

The WIGs were finalized by the board in November 2015, and on Wednesday night, the district staff discussed their goals for the

current school year.

Some of the facilities goals discussed include completing new classroom building at San Clemente High School and San Juan Hills High School, and construction is set to be completed by Aug. 18, 2017.

The district also wants to see the implementation of an energy reduction plan.

In the education services goals, the district would like to see an increase of test results, including the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASP) in math and ELA by three percent.

Finalists Selected for Festival of Whales Logo Contest THE LATEST: The finalists for the Festival of Whales logo contest have been announced and the final five are being put to a public vote. The five artists named as the top finalists are Tom Swimm, Jeff Fleming, Alex Van Brasch, Mark Sandlin and Vickie Killeen. There were 58 entries in all.The contest was open to the public.

The entries submitted were required to showcase the California gray whale, which travels the waters off Dana Point every year.

City Council Candidates Discuss Sober Living Facilities

n just a few weeks, two candidates for the Dana Point City Council will be elected to fill two seats on the five-member board. To assist Dana Point voters with their decision, the Dana Point Times sat down with each candidate and asked them the same five questions. The Times will run their responses to those questions in the weeks leading up to our special election guide on Oct. 14.

This week, the Times asked each candidate, “How would you change the way Dana Point regulates sober living homes, if anything?”

The candidates’ responses are listed in the order their names will appear on the ballot.

Khalil said if elected, she would work toward regulating sober living homes, something she said the city does not currently do well enough.

“There are rules when it comes to residential use, and you have to adhere to those,” Khalil said. “How many people are in a bedroom, how many people are in the home, how many cars are there?”

She added that if the homes are being misused, then regulation needs to be put into place and adhered to.

the problem,” Khalil said. “There’s no recourse how they’re actually helping the individuals that need it. And I’m all for the individuals that need help.”

She added that the homes also need to be treated differently than short-term rentals.

When asked if she would push for regulations at the municipal level or use her position on Council to push for state and federal intervention, Khalil said she would be in favor of pushing state legislators to enact enforceable laws.

“I think that with the Council, you would have to push it through state rules and have them regulate it,” Khalil said. “With that type of housing, you get a lot of greed and you get people taking advantage of the people that need the help.”

She added with regulation, people that are only “there for the profit” rather than helping others can be cut out.

Wyatt said regulating sober living homes “will be a challenge.”

“There are some very specific rules about sober living homes,” Wyatt said. “I do think trying to sort out the licensed and unlicensed ones is really important.”

He said regulating the unlicensed facilities can be “trickier.”

Wyatt believes that whether the facilities are regulated or not, they will “collapse under their own success.”

“Eventually someone is going to figure out they don’t actually work,” Wyatt said, adding that it’s unsustainable to have so many “people spend a lot of money to stay in a private house that doesn’t actually produce results.”

“I don’t really want to stop people who really need help. But, you have to understand you have to do code enforcement better. I think Dana Point does a poor job of code enforcement in general,” Wyatt said.

When asked if Wyatt would support lawsuits against local sober living homes, he said it would depend on the situation.

“I think it’s going to depend if they are truly a nuisance and if you have enough evidence,” Wyatt said. “There’s a whole set of policing that should happen and indeed if they’re creating a nuisance, then the city should check on that. You better have good data and something to baseline it against before you decide to go to court and declare something a nuisance.”

Lewis said she doesn’t believe the city is “in a position” to do anything yet regarding sober living homes.

“We don’t really have information,” Lewis said. “This area is in complete flux in the law; all we’re going to end up doing is getting more expensive litigation.”

She said she would like to see Dana Point get together with neighboring cities that are going through similar situations with sober living homes and pool resources to come up with “a beta approach.”

“Let’s pool all the money to defend it, let it wind its way through the courts, tweak it. Then when you put something in place, you have a pretty good idea that what you’re going to put in place is something that’s going to stand the test of the courts,” Lewis said. “And it might not even get there because you’ve done this whole foundation digging.”

She said that she believes the city needs to begin those conversations with other cities immediately, and protecting against litigation expands outside of sober living homes.

“As a lawyer, one of the things I’d like to do is get control of this litigation, and why is the city attorney that advises us the firm that litigates for us? That’s one of the things I want to see if we can do right away,” Lewis said.

When asked if she would change the way the city regulates sober living homes, Maynard said the community “has a responsibility” to allow such facilities.

“I think, legislatively, the state of California has (ruled cities must allow sober living homes),” Maynard said. “But from what I understand, the community doesn’t always know where they all are.

They sort of find out as there’s a situation or a concern, that’s how some of them … are regulated. The state regulates them, and others… I just think it all needs to be pulled together so when you say a sober living home, this is how it has to be.”

Maynard said she believes there needs to be local control.

“We need local control. But, I think that to have some possible state legislation under which there’s a minimum you have to conform to this, this, this and then the local communities are allowed to modify or enhance to what their community wants or needs,” Maynard said.

She said local control is important because not every city in the state is the same.

“We need the local (control) because we’re different than Downey, not to disparage anybody, but we’re this little beach community, and they’re out there and inland. You can’t say they’re all the same,” Maynard said.

MICHELLE BROUGH Businesswoman/Investment Attorney

Brough said she doesn’t believe the city, nor any other governmental body, regulates sober living homes adequately.

“I don’t think anyone regulates sober living homes, which I guess is part of the problem,” Brough said.

She said she would like to have all levels of the government working together to address the issue.

“You have to have the federal government, you have to have the state government, and you have to have the locality because the influx of sober living homes was really a creation of Prop 36* at the state level, and the (result of) Obamacare funding at the federal level,” Brough said. “It’s a combination of all levels, so the solution needs to be from a combination of all levels.”

Brough said she believes regulation of these homes needs to occur because they are not providing the services they claim they are.

“That’s not OK. That’s taking our citizens that are really vulnerable and taking advantage of them,” Brough said. “We need someone to work with them, and come up with a solution for Dana Point and its citizens as well as be legal. It’s a complicated issue.”

She added that “you can’t kick them out,” but you can ensure they are legitimate. *The state ballot initiative that allowed those with non-violent drug convictions to receive probation instead of jail time. DP www.danapointtimes.com

Letters to the Editor REFERENDUM SEEKS VOTE OF THE PEOPLE TONI NELSON, Capistrano Beach

The citizen referendum currently underway seeks to repeal the short-term vacation rental (STR) ordinance and bring this major change in residential zoning to a vote of the people. Public hearings nine years ago do not constitute adequate support to allow as little as two-day rentals, without restrictions or buffers, throughout the two-thirds of Dana Point not protected

by CC&Rs. There have been no surveys of impacted neighbors and no comprehensive studies of the impacts of resident versus outside investor-owned STRs; the effects on long-term rental inventory; the impact on neighboring property values; nor the experiences of neighboring cities (most of whom have banned or restricted STRs). Most importantly, we need a full understanding of how and why illegal STRs are still operating and the extent to which the Coastal Commission will be allowed to regulate zoning in residential areas. Council can draft a stronger ordinance for short-term rentals that earns broad public support, or take the existing ordinance to the ballot box. Please sign the referendum and press “pause” before Dana Point as we know it is changed forever by three councilmen, two of whom leave office in December.

In response to Deanna Slocum’s Sept.

23 letter, here are the facts regarding the city’s notice to short-term rental permit holders. Noting that STR proponents seemed unusually organized, I emailed Code Enforcement Officer Ted Harris on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 asking if he had sent them a special notice. Receiving no response, I filed a Public Records Request with the City Clerk on Sept. 2. On Sept.

9, I finally learned the letter was sent by Mr. Harris to all STR permit holders on Aug. 17 at 9:16 a.m. suggesting recipients “may wish to speak at the meeting or write a letter to City Council.” Apparently, Mr. Harris had been “inundated with calls” about the meeting date change between the close of the Aug. 16 Council meeting at 8:57 p.m. and 9:16 a.m. the next morning. No such personal notice was sent to known opponents to the ordinance.

CITY LEARNED FROM MEASURE H SHILPA BHIMANI, Dana Point

I was a vocal supporter of Measure H, as were a wide majority of people who Dana Point Times September 30-October 6, 2016

spoke in favor of short-term rentals (STR).

This ordinance is not about big businesses taking over our city; it’s about the teacher who rents out her home in the summer in order to visit family in Michigan, or the veteran who rents the back part of his duplex to make ends meet. The grandparents who bought a vacation rental to be closer to grandkids, or the empty nesters who like to travel in the summer. I thought their stories were very moving, and I personally think it’s unfortunate that they have been mocked in other letters that have been written in.

I believe our City Council learned their lesson with Measure H and got behind a very popular local initiative, with regards to 5.38. Just as Measure H looked to preserve the key tenets of the Dana Point Town Center initiative, I believe passage of the STR initiative preserves a rental community that has been going on here harmoniously for over half a century. Tourism is the life blood of our city and STRs play a critical role, peacefully.

Code enforcement and the Sheriff both clearly stated there have been next to no issues. They would have no reason to lie.

If there were supposedly 600 complaints on Beach Road, why does no one at the city have any record of it? Why was this not referenced by the Beach Road HOA? Others from Beach Road communicated that there are few issues there.

All of the STR issues that could occur in the future could easily be addressed by our City Council or by an HOA. Nothing prevents this. A no vote would have taken this back to the drawing board. This ordinance has been worked on for a decade; we had six months to discuss this as a city before the final vote. There was plenty of feedback, the wide majority supporting STRs. Kudos to our City Council for approving an excellent ordinance.

It needs strengthening to make regulations that are enforceable and improvements to address the concerns not only of residents who want to rent their homes, but also to consider the impact on their neighborhoods. Likewise, there are no protections for our long-term renters who could be displaced or priced out of the market by the conversion to short-term rentals.

Many referendum signers had no idea such a significant ordinance had been passed. Our neighboring cities have restricted or prohibited short-term rentals because of their recent proliferation due to Airbnb and VRBO. Shouldn’t that send up a red flag? There are no provisions in our ordinance that would control proliferation or the exploitation of our neighborhoods by outside investors.

A recent amendment is a major addition to the ordinance, ceding local control over short-term rentals to the California Coastal Commission. Councilman Viczorek vehemently opposed passing the ordinance because of this amendment and urged the Council to unanimously reject it.

A referendum to overturn the controversial short-term rental ordinance recently passed by Councilmen Schoeffel, Olvera and Mayor Tomlinson is being circulated throughout Dana Point. If the referendum passes, a vote of the people would be required before the ordinance could become law. A vote would be warranted because the ordinance affects all Dana Point residents and will change the character of our city forever. There are only six days left for Dana Point registered voters to sign the referendum and ensure its passage.

Opponents of the referendum have interfered with our efforts to obtain signatures at local supermarkets. They have angered people and store managers so much that times are no longer listed when the referendum can be signed at those Page 8

At the Movies: ‘The Magnificent Seven’ is a Three-Take

ollywood making a remake of a remake? Why, I never! Most film lovers will know that John Sturges’ 1960 classic western The Magnificent Seven is actually an American adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (1954), and now director Antoine Fuqua has given us a second adaptation, though direct remake of The Magnificent Seven.

We’ve now gone from Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura, to Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen, to Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt.

In 1879, the small town of Rose Creek is overtaken by the psychotic industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard) and his large gang of criminals. Recently widowed Emma Cullen (Haley Bennett) has recruited bounty hunter Sam Chisolm (Washington) to help her form a group of hired guns to take down Bogue. Chisolm and Cullen find cowboy Josh Faraday (Pratt), sharpshooter Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), assassin Billy Rocks (Byunghun Lee), tracker Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), outlaw Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) and warrior Red Harvest

(Martin Sensmeier).

Fortunately for Fuqua and company, the new Magnificent Seven isn’t flat out awful on a technical level like most unnecessary remakes. But it still suffers from being part of the unnecessary category. There is nothing wrong with the script, direction, effects or editing, but the feature is very by-thenumbers and safe. The characters do exactly what you expect, and there are no new spins on the famous tale, other than more elaborate action. Washington, Bennett and Pratt are decent leads, but we already have two great versions available. DP

Game Changers

After cancer scare, Dana Point family spreads joy to others through video games

ne day nine years ago changed the lives of a Dana Point family.

Taylor Carol was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia and neither he nor his family knew how long he would live.

The doctors told them two weeks.

Before the diagnosis, Taylor was practicing for a big musical performance. The Carols are a big sports family, and Taylor played a lot of sports, but when Taylor’s vocal talent emerged, he began taking vocal lessons and joining musicals.

But at 11 years old, Taylor began getting night sweats and fatigue; the family took him to doctors, who advised he get further tests. After taking Taylor to the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, tests revealed he had leukemia.

In May 2006, the Carol family moved to Seattle so Taylor could be admitted into the Children’s Hospital of Seattle.

“We had been told he had a rare form of leukemia, and he would need a bone marrow transplant to live,” Taylor’s dad, Jim Carol, said. “It’s probably the most horrible thing any human can go through.”

But Jim said he’s glad the family moved there and was thankful to be presented with the option at all.

“When a parent, or anyone, takes that option, that means you’re taking an option that can kill you, but you don’t have many options,” Jim said.

A match was found from a man living in Germany, and he donated the bone marrow that saved Taylor’s life.

Taylor battled cancer for five years, and

during that time, he was often stuck in his room or the hospital room by himself.

That’s when Taylor turned to video games to pass the time.

That experienced helped shape the Carol family, and prompted their desire to help other children going through illnesses.

Jim had retired from a CEO position with a tech company and wanted to use his skills and passion to begin something that would help others.

GameChanger was founded in 2007; it was originally named donategames. org, by Jim and Taylor after they watched how video games and the kindness from strangers helped during Taylor’s treatment. They decided to dedicate their time to giving back.

GameChanger focuses on helping children and families suffering from cancer and other rare diseases. The organization collects and delivers video games, toys and consoles to children’s hospitals across the country. They host gaming events to connect patients and the gaming community, offer services to patients and staff in the hospitals and award financial aid and college scholarships.

“It all started inside his hospital room in Seattle,” Jim said.

The Carols realized they had games and consoles sitting at home in California, collecting dust while they were in Seattle.

They knew they wanted to do something with them.

“We just thought, ‘wow, we should just give it away,’” Jim said.

Jim said the family received dozens of boxes when the organization was first created, and it just kept growing. They stacked the boxes in their home garage.

Today, the boxes are in a warehouse in San Juan Capistrano, and there are systems, controllers and games for Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo, as well as books, tablets for the younger children, toys and more.

Jim said over the past nine months, the charity has visited more than 8,000 kids in children’s hospitals across the country to meet, install the games and technology, and see what they can do to help make the

“We want to take care of these kids and their families,” he said. “Our rule is to impact, inspire and deliver services to children with cancer and life-threatening illnesses through gaming, tech and innovation.”

In the past, video games have been shown in a negative light, but Jim said this is the positive side to video games.

“We’ve gone to hospitals and have just seen the way kids light up,” he said.

“We’ve seen kids that haven’t been responding to anything suddenly get up and move around.”

Today, the company has donated more than 17,000 video games to hospitals, children centers, partner charities and families since 2007. They’ve donated more than $200,000 toward finding a cancer cure and helped more than 100 families with support.

Taylor is healthy and attending Harvard University, where he’s studying music and English.

“We’ve learned to take every opportunity we can, and we’re very grateful for that,” Jim said.

THE EVENT The Games and Music Festival is the first of its kind in Dana Point, Carol said.

The day-long event will feature live music, local food and the latest games.

The event will run from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 2 at Sea Terrace Park.

The games portion of the festival will include chances to meet YouTube/gaming stars, live gaming and performances, virtual reality demos, more than 35 companies will showcase new games, interactive booths and more.

Tickets range from $44.95 to $200 depending on the ticket, and can be purchased at www.thegamesandmusicfestival. org.

All proceeds from the tickets will benefit the charity.

Free parking and shuttles will be provided to the event from Salt Creek Beach Park, Strand Vista Park and Dana Hills High School. DP

or years, I have published an online newsletter that addresses the topic of dating and relationships for people ages 50 to 90. The newsletter is emailed each Friday to people across the U.S., Canada and other countries. There is no cost to sign up; I call the subscribers “Champs,” because that’s what they are.

Two weeks ago, a Champ named Fred commented about older men dating younger women. Fred did not disclose his age, but said, “At my age, everyone is younger; however, this is my experience.

Women that get to age 68-70, divorced or widowed, tend to become older than their age. Despite what they write in their online profiles, ‘love to travel, walk on the beach, dance the night away,’ they do none of these things, and haven’t for many years.

Widows are guiltier of not doing these things.

“Also, the dearly departed reach the position of sainthood in the widows’ minds, which is usually not even close to the truth. And, they constantly compare you to the late-departed mister.

“So what do old guys do? They stay away from the widows and look for younger women who actually do dance and walk the beaches. The downside is younger women have no money, so I have to accept that travel, dining out and whatever, will be on my dime. Also, ego comes into play.

‘Hot’ women with good clothing and an upbeat personality make your day.”

I was reluctant to include Fred’s comments in the newsletter, thinking older women might find them offensive. But to my surprise, many responded positively, even adding their own experiences.

Marie, 65, wrote, “I recently met a 68-year-old man. He bought me a roundtrip ticket to Florida. I dumped him when I came back from the trip because he could not keep up with me.”

Judie, 73, said, “I found Fred’s comments very truthful. Sounds like he spends a lot of time online, and then when he actually meets these ladies, he then finds they are probably ‘old’ acting, looking and thinking.

“I go to movies, concerts and casinos by myself for an evening out. Many women in their late 60s, 70s and beyond do not go out alone at night. They don’t wish to drive, are fearful, or their families tell them they need to stay in, where it’s ‘safe.’

phins earned a win by forfeit against Villa Park. Now that the Dolphins have ended one streak, they’re focused on something entirely different.

“Now we’re 1-0 and we got a new streak.

Every week it’s going to be 1-0 from here on out. That’s the only streak we care about,” head coach Phil Skinner said. “I feel like we have a good future ahead of us, and I feel like we’re taking the right steps to continue winning.”

Dana Hills will travel to play Fullerton (2-2) on Sept. 30.

Dolphins Get Elusive First Win Over Los Amigos When the game clock read zero on Sept. 23, the Dana Hills High School football team was finally ready to celebrate.

But they weren’t the only ones excited about the team’s first win in over a year.

The students in attendance for the Dolphins triumphant 46-13 victory over visiting Los Amigos were eager to join in the celebration. Hundreds of them flooded the field to celebrate with the Dolphins, who picked up their first win since the 2014 season.

The game was never in doubt, as the Dolphins (1-4) offense settled into a groove early and did not let up. The defense did its part and Dana Hills, which lost a tough game against Santa Monica one week ago, would not be denied.

Junior quarterback Corey Cisowski tied a school record with six touchdown passes to lead the Dolphins. Cisowski completed 15 of 27 passes for 357 yards and no interceptions.

Cisowski and a large group of Dolphins players had never seen the varsity team pick up a win until Friday night.

“Ever since January and February we’ve been dreaming of this. … It was a long time coming,” Cisowski said. “This win wasn’t just for us, the players. It’s for the coaches, the school and the whole Dana Point community.”

spectacular game, catching six passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Matt Sanford caught four passes for 53 yards and two touchdowns and junior Gavin Pappagalo reeled in four passes for 63 yards and a score.

“We were all just on the same page,” Cisowski said. “Our offense is all about tempo and once we get rolling, we have each other’s backs, and there’s no stopping us once we get going.”

The night will certainly be one Cisowski remembers for a long time. Not only did he tie a school record in touchdown passes, but he accomplished the feat on a night when the Dolphins honored local first responders. Cisowski’s mother is a police officer.

ans Crouse, a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher out of Dana Hills High School, was one of 20 high school ballplayers selected to represent the United States on the USA Baseball 18U National Team when it opens up play in the COPABE Pan American “AAA” Championships in Mexico on Sept. 30. Crouse, a soon-to-be senior, is one of seven players from California that were selected to the team, and part of a trio of Orange County natives that will compete. Crouse is joined by JSerra Catholic’s Royce Lewis and Huntington Beach’s Nick Pratto on the squad. The team will look to defend its gold medal in the event, which was won in 2014.

Cross country runner Jack Landgraf burst onto the scene as a sophomore with a record-setting performance at the Dolphins’ own invitational meet one year ago.

While he didn’t break any records this time around, Landgraf still proved to be the runner to beat at the annual event, as he claimed the individual title for a second consecutive year on Sept. 24.

Landgraf posted a winning time of 14 minutes, 33.8 seconds, besting the secondplace finisher, Jacob Aries of San Juan Hills, by nearly nine seconds.

The Dolphins’ boys team won the team competition, as John Turner (14:51.4) and Brandon Hough (14:53.8) finished eighth and tenth, respectively, to pack three runners inside the top-10 for a cumulative score of 66.

The Dolphins’ girls team placed 10th in the team competition. The team’s highest finisher was senior Alyssa White (18:19.5), who placed 36th overall.

Let the Pacific Paddle Games Begin More prize money, more paddlers, same great stand-up paddle contest comes to Doheny

T

his weekend, the best stand-up paddlers in the world will descend on Doheny State Beach for the 2016 Pacific Paddle Games presented by Salt Life. It’s the culmination of a long summer racing season, and for those with eyes on dipping into the $60,000 prize purse, preparation is everything.

“The Pacific Paddle Games isn’t just one of the last events of the season, it’s also one of the biggest events,” said Maui’s Connor Baxter. “Trying to peak at the right time, that’s a hard part of it. Some of us don’t just race short courses, we’re doing long distance, channel crossings, surf races.

And a huge thing is not peaking too early in the season.”

Taking place from Sept. 30-Oct. 2, this year’s race categories include Pro Technical, Open Technical, Youth Technical and Distance. With the exception of the pro categories, there are age divisions to accommodate everyone from kids to seniors. The Pro divisions are capped at 150 racers. Last year, there were over 250 total entrants.

no reason to expect the participation numbers to drop off at all.

Taking a slightly different tact from last year’s Games, some changes have been made to improve the 2016 technical races. This year’s competition will feature multiple 16-man heats in four elimination rounds. The goal is to cut down on some of the race chaos and keep everybody a little bit safer. Because the race entails multiple laps around a short-course that weaves in and out through the surf line, Paddle Games organizers are optimistic that the new format will have a positive impact.

“The main difference between the Technical and Distance races is that competitors will be going in and out of the surf,” explained race director Anthony Vela.

“Doheny is an interesting place that has a lot of reverb coming off the beach, and there are a lot of different reefs. Even on a flat day that doesn’t look bumpy, there’s still a lot of water moving around.”

his year at the Olympic Games in Brazil, the women’s U.S. water polo team took home the gold medal.

One of the stars of the team was Kaleigh Gilchrist from Newport Beach. But before her detour on the Olympic stage, she was a national surfing champion.

Young Savannah Batchelor, a seventh grader at Shorecliffs Middle School, appears to be on a similar trajectory.

“My goals are to make it to the finals in a WSA contest, and I want to win Junior Olympics in water polo,” said Batchelor.

Batchelor started surfing with her dad when she was only six years old. Even before she could paddle, he enthusiastically entered her into “push-in” contests.

“My dad surfs, so it was something we could do together on the weekends,” she

It should be strong enough to push the surf well overhead around Trestles, which translates into shoulder- to head-high surf at Doheny.

Beyond the breakers, the six-mile distance race consists of two laps around a triangular course outside the surf line at Doheny. There is also a three-mile Distance race that is only one lap and features divisions for Open and Recreational racers.

And for the non-racers on the beach, the West Marine Demo Zone is an ideal spot to pick up a paddle, grab a board and try your hand at stand-up paddling.

New for this year is the Manufacturer’s Team Challenge, which brings a little industry flair to the Games. Pitting brand teams against each other, the four winning teams split $25,000 worth of print and said. “My favorite thing about surfing is the feeling of riding the waves and having fun learning new moves.”

But as Batchelor is finding out, being a dual sport athlete is no easy feat. One of the big lessons she’s having to learn is how to manage her time.

“I haven’t been able to compete for Shorecliffs lately because I’m also a water polo player for the Tritons Water Polo Club, but this year I hope to be a contributing competitor,” she added.

“I love competing with the girls I go to school with and meeting girls from different cities.”

Starting in 2020, surfing will join women’s water polo in the Olympics, and who knows, maybe sometime in the not-too-distant future we’ll be cheering for Batchelor as she stands atop both podiums. DP

With seemingly something for everyone, the obvious question is how one goes about winning the Pacific Paddle Games. First and foremost, confidence in one’s equipment is critical. Given that starting lines are notoriously tangled, turns around buoys can resemble a mosh pit, and a healthy south swell will be wreaking havoc, a good feeling about race gear makes all the difference.

“It’s really important to be comfortable on your board,” says Vela. “It has to be wide enough to paddle in tough conditions.

In the open distance race, there are about 300 to 400 people starting at one time, and there’s a lot of turbulence.”

But like most races, the devil is in the detail. The top-flight pros spend months dialing in on their race strategies.

“Smaller points that are often overlooked are the little things like mental training, mental preparation. I’m visualizing this race already,” explained Baxter. “Visualizing the first heat, second heat, what I’m going to do strategy-wise, how hard am I going to go, when I’ll need to conserve energy. For instance, I know it’s important to conserve enough to perform strong in the finals (for the technical race) since that’s where the coin comes in.”

When the race horn sounds “you want to get off to a good start where you are paddling at almost 100 percent,” continued Vela. “Then you need to find your groove, that 70 to 80 percent range where you can sustain that pace for the remainder of the race.”

Really, there’s no easy way to win a division at the Pacific Paddle Games. The level of talent is second to none. But victory also takes a significant amount of luck.

One wave can make all the difference. And because of all these variables and the high drama they produce, there’s no better place to be than Doheny this weekend. DP
