Falconer Program to Continue This Summer THE LATEST: The falconer will return to two of Dana Point’s beaches this summer to deter seagulls.

Last summer, the company Harris’s Hawks was used for three months during a demonstration project to provide beach water quality improvements at Monarch and Salt Creek beaches. The hawks deterred the seagulls from congregating in the area and contributing bacteria.

At Salt Creek, the city operates an ozone treatment facility that treats dry weather flows at the outlet for bacteria and potential pathogens.

According to a statement, the city has made vast improvements in water quality, but natural processes like bird droppings and other environmental factors come into play before the water flow reaches the beach.

WHAT’S NEXT: The project was scheduled to start the first week of May and will continue through October. The falconer will be on site every day for the first two weeks from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and then will reduce to five days a week for a month and a half, then go to three or four days a week to remain effective. —Kristina Pritchett

City Holds Parking Workshop to Address Concerns, Discuss Solutions THE LATEST: Residents were able to voice their concerns regarding the city’s parking in commercial and residential areas during a joint parking workshop on Monday, May 15.

Stations were set up inside the Dana Point Community Center where residents and business owners could mark where they believed the problem areas exist and share possible solutions.

The City Council voted in favor of hiring Richard Wilson Transportation Consultant to facilitate the joint study session with the Council and Planning Commission to discuss parking.

Earlier this month, the city created an online survey that asks a variety of questions concerning parking and enforcement.

“There’s an agreement that the solutions have to fit Dana Point,” Wilson said.

WHAT’S NEXT: Wilson will prepare a report summarizing the issues and concerns raised during the briefings and workshops which will be brought to Planning Commission. Commissioners will then have an opportunity to comment and make recommendations before the report is presented to City Council.

Director of Community Development Ursula Luna-Reynosa said this could occur in June, but a definite date has not been set.

City Council Approves 2017-2018 Law Enforcement Service Contract THE LATEST: After debating whether the city’s Financial Review Committee should review the law enforcement services agreement, the City Council voted 4-1 in favor of the contract.

The 2017-2018 contract totals $12,073,713, which is an increase of $605,316 from the 2016-2017 contract, according to a staff report. The increase is primarily due to a $66,000 salary increase, and changes in estimated vacancy credits, services and supplies.

The police services contract makes up 35 percent of the city’s general fund in the proposed fiscal year 2018 general fund operating budget, according to a staff report.

Police Chief Lt. Russ Chilton said he wouldn’t have been in favor of any changes to the budget.

“I can’t recommend any changes at this time with this radical shift in California,” Chilton said. “We still haven’t found the implications. My recommendation for this city is to hold fast and see what happens.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to reduce the level of service at this time.”

Mayor Pro Tem Paul Wyatt said he wanted to delay the vote so the FRC could review the contract and voice their concerns.

Councilman Rick Viczorek said he didn’t see a reason to hold off voting on the contract.

Mayor Debra Lewis, who voted against the contract, said she thought the FRC should have the opportunity to provide input.

OC Parks Commission Approves Establishment of Harbor Advisory Council THE LATEST: The OC Parks Commission voted to establish a Dana Point Harbor Advisory Council to support OC Parks and the Parks Commission in dealing with Dana Point Harbor matters.

In June 2016, the County Board of Supervisors approved reorganization of the Dana Point Harbor, and transferred the operational responsibility of the Harbor to OC Parks.

The Council will include two OC Parks Commissioners, as well as nine members from the community. Justin McCusker and Joe Muller will serve as co-chairs of the Council.

The groups represented will be the wet slip tenant boaters, dry storage tenants, trailer boaters, small craft operators, restauranteurs, landside merchants, waterside merchants, clubs and social, education, community services organizations and one-at-large member.

Grand Jury: CUSD Vaccination Rates Rise, but Numbers Remain Below Recommended Threshold THE LATEST: A new report from the Orange County Grand Jury shows that while the number of students vaccinated in the Capistrano Unified School District rose significantly over the last year, CUSD still has the second lowest percentage of vaccinated students in the county.

The report, released on May 15, is titled, “Ouch! – Now That Didn’t Hurt: The Implementation of the Vaccination Bill SB 277 in Orange County Schools.”

The report examines how school districts across the county have adhered to new vaccination requirements for public schools.

Of the 12 Orange County school districts studied, CUSD was one of two districts that had an increase in the number of vaccinated kindergarten students but still remained below the “recommended herd immunity threshold,” which is 92-94 percent, as defined by the California Department of Public Health. The district had a 5.8 percent increase in vaccinated kindergarteners between the 2015-16 school year and 2016-17, taking the percentage from 84.4 to 90.2. The percentage of conditional kindergarten students in CUSD—those who don’t meet all the vaccination requirements—decreased from 4.7 percent in 2015-16 to 3.9 percent in 2016-17.

The only district with a lower percentage of vaccinated kindergarten students is Laguna Beach, with 85.6 percent in 2016-17.

Doheny Blues Festival returns to Doheny State Beach for 20th year

T

his weekend, two days full of blues, rock and soul music will fill Doheny State Beach during the 20th annual Doheny Blues Festival.

This year’s lineup includes more than 20 artists on two stages, as well as a smaller more intimate stage called the Backporch All while guest can enjoy the beauty of Doheny State Beach.

Rich Sherman, president of Omega Events, said as a music fan, he’s looking forward to seeing certain acts on stage.

“But, what I’m most eagerly anticipating is the process of setting up the venue, seeing all the fans arrive and opening the doors,” Sherman said. “There is so much work that transpires in the final few days, it’s a relief to actually blow the doors open and get the first band on stage.”

Sherman said big headliners have allowed Omega to expand their bookings over the last 20 years.

“We can feature more relatively unknown artists,” Sherman said. “We have also incorporated more technology and planning so there are many ways the event has changed behind the scenes. But frankly, the event today looks very much like it did in 1998, just bigger.”

Some of the headliners for this weekend include Joe Walsh, Melissa Etheridge, Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience, Chris Isaak, Robin Trower and Mavis Staples.

In past, the festival has featured Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bonnie Raitt, Greg Allman, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Chuck Berry and more.

This year, Omega created the Doheny Blues Foundation, which will focus on education efforts for children and helping musicians in need.

response to folks wanting to offer their help to the Foundation, and believe this organization can tie together many aspects of the community in a common cause,” Sherman said.

When looking back at the first years of the festival, Sherman said they never had a grand vision of the event.

“We knew what we wanted to achieve in the first year, which was to throw a heck of a party and survive financially,” Sherman said. “We studied what the great music festivals were doing right, even though there were very few when we launched in 1998, then we tried to incorporate the best parts in our event.”

Some things Sherman said guests can look forward to is listening to great music and having a good time.

“While that sounds simplistic, it’s our first goal every year,” Sherman said.

“We try to focus on the fan experience, whether it be with the uniqueness of the acts, the speed of the beverage lines or the cleanliness of the restrooms. Half of the attendees come solely for the music and the other half come because they love the overall experience.”

Sherman added Omega is thankful for working closely with Doheny State Beach for 20 years and for their leadership.

“Together, along with the help of the city staff and Harbor Association, we have built one of the finest blues music festivals in the country, one that should make us all proud,” Sherman said.

The event runs Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21. Tickets range from $75$140.

San Juan City Council Selects Developer for Playhouse Property The San Juan Capistrano City Council voted in closed session on May 16 to enter into negotiations with Frontier Real Estate Investments, LLC for the sale and development of the downtown playhouse property and adjacent parking lot. The vote was 3-2, with Councilwoman Pam Patterson and Mayor Kerry Ferguson opposed.

Frontier’s proposal includes the Capistrano Center for the Arts—a new performing arts center with an auditorium seating approximately 250 people, a secondary black box theater with 60 to 100 seats and classrooms.

The plan also includes street-front restaurants and retail shops, an open-air plaza adjoining the theater with the restaurants and shops, a boutique second-story creative office space, and two levels of subterranean parking that will provide approximately 250 parking stalls.

Since January, the Council had been reviewing 11 development proposals for the property that has been home to the Camino Real Playhouse for more than 25 years. The site in question consists of two adjacent

Local Shelter to Hold Low-Cost Vaccination Clinic The San Clemente/Dana Point Animal Shelter will host a low cost vaccination clinic for dogs on Wednesday, May 24 from 5-7 p.m.

On Friday, May 12, Cassano’s Pizza in San Clemente hosted a fundraiser for Leeanne Ericson, the woman who was attacked by a shark a few weeks ago while swimming at Church Beach at San Onofre State Beach.

Tiffany Cassano, the daughter in-law of Dave and Sharon Cassano and her husband James, were instrumental in the event.

The goal was to raise $1,000 but they raised $1,600 that night. After that, the new goal became $2,000.

“We kept the basket up for a couple of days, and I talked with one of my regular customers, and he came back with a $1,000 check,” Tiffany said. “Everybody was very generous, and it was just the coolest moment. We ended up raising $3,300 that we’ll be able to give.”

Dear Chief Chilton, I wanted to relay my thanks for a job well done!

My husband and I own three restaurants in this lovely city of Dana Point and we are also residents. Recently at one of our businesses we had a very unpleasant experience with a transient. One of the restaurants that we own is on Pacific Coast Highway. A male entered the restaurant and locked himself in the bathroom for over 20 minutes and was shouting.

Several times our employees banged on the door to ask if he was okay or needed assistance. The noise was becoming louder. My employees and I were afraid as we thought he could be armed and dangerous. We cleared the restaurant and called the police department.

The deputies arrived very quickly and removed the man from the restaurant. In his hand was a piece of copper pipe that he had been banging on the walls, he had begun to take the toilet apart. It turns out that he had been trashing restrooms in other local restaurants and the deputies thanked me for calling them. I consider myself lucky that no one was hurt due to the quick response of our local sheriff deputies.

I am so happy and relieved to live in a community where I know we can call the police and immediately get a response.

We have a beautiful city with five-star amenities, and it is very reassuring that the police are giving five-star service and doing a great job.

The deputies were prompt and very professional. They were calm and reassuring my employees and me. They encouraged us to call at any time we need assistance.

Without your department's support I feel this city would not fare so well, after all we have been voted one of the best coastal cities to live in! I salute you and your deputies for keeping order and keeping us all safe to live and prosper in this beautiful area.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH— MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER

and over if it’s under $950, no jail time, just a ticket. As a result property crimes are up, breaking into cars, open garages, etc., as long as it’s under the limit they are free to commit crime. When someone steals from you, shoplifts, possesses drugs as long as it’s under the $950 limit, when you call the police, their hands are tied to prevent this from happening repeatedly by this new law.

What this change does is place the responsibility of helping keep crime out of the neighborhoods up to the residents on every block. In Capo Beach where we have no streetlights and have close proximity to PCH and the beach, it makes it just that much more inviting for petty criminals to frequent our neighborhoods.

That’s where Neighborhood Watch comes in. When you see something suspicious, strangers around a neighbor’s house when you know they are away from home, “casing” open garages and cars, or opening mailboxes (that’s a federal offense). If you observe any other crimes like someone committing assault or threatening to do so, you have to help be the eyes and ears of your block and call the police. You can remain anonymous when you call. If you can organize or find someone on your block who is willing to be a captain, you can start a neighborhood watch on your block. Neighborhood Watch never gets directly involved with criminals or incidents, the “captain’ is just a coordinator to let the residents know about incidents other neighbors have passed on to the block captain.

Our neighborhood watch has been dormant for many years, and there is not a better time to get this active again than now. Currently it is up to our Sheriff’s Department to make this vital again, but it will take more than one person with a full time job to make that happen. Our Mayor, Debra Lewis is strongly supporting ramping up participation throughout the city and having programs in place to keep it active on an ongoing basis.

I strongly urge the rest of our City Council to do their part to keep crime down in Dana Point by getting behind this program as well.

IN RESPONSE TO COUNCILMAN VICZOREK’S COLUMN PAUL HINMAN, Dana Point

As a fiscal conservative, I applaud Councilman Viczorek’s wire brushing of the proposed city budget, (Dana Point Times’ Guest Opinion, May 12-18). Kudos to him. However, I take exception to a couple opinions he presented in his article.

First, in criticizing city support of the Dana Point Symphony, Councilman Viczorek implied that great music is only appreciated by “wealthy patrons who could support it privately.” This is demonstrably false. Great music is appreciated and loved by all classes of people. If the Councilman had ever attended a Dana Point Symphony concert, (he has not), he would see that is the case.

Dana Point is a destination city, and has a reputation of being a quality place to live.

Contributing to that reputation is the city’s demonstrated concern and support for the arts. The Council and the Arts Commission have done a good job in promoting public art, art appreciation via the Art Walk, supporting the Dana Point Symphony and other initiatives. Of course music lovers benefit from the symphony, but so do others in the community who profit by the burnishing of our reputation. Councilman Viczorek complained that the proposed budget eliminated funding for an event which funds the VFW of which he is a member. It depends on whose ox is getting gored. I think the VFW does fine work. But the citizens of Dana Point do benefit from having a quality symphony perform in our municipality, and I would hope the Council will continue to support them.

Now that Prop. 47 has taken effect, crimes that used to send someone to jail are now misdemeanors and only a “ticket” can be issued. borhood of the Lantern Village, I feel it’s such a shame that it doesn’t live up to its potential. It could be so quaint and charming. Ever wonder about the differences in property values between here and say Corona Del Mar or Laguna Beach? Just look around, some of us keep our properties up with pride. Unfortunately, others around us don’t share this pride of ownership.

The streets are loaded with cars because people have their garages full of junk, trash cans are left in driveways and not put away and some just leave piles of junk out front. Dead trees and unkempt yards are commonplace. Where is the City of Dana Point Code Enforcement? I don’t get it!

combo certainly lived up to the restaurant’s name, with a generous portion of grilled salmon atop an oversized bowl of steamed white rice and cabbage. Any salmon lover knows it’s rare to find that perfectly cooked piece of fish, but that’s exactly what you’ll find at Good Choice. Perhaps the best surprise was the homemade teriyaki glaze, a light addition to the salmon filet that added just the right bite of sweetness.

At the Movies: ‘The Dinner’ Leaves a Bad Taste

ren Moverman’s adaptation of Herman Koch’s novel The Dinner had all the potential to be a good onscreen interpretation. A well-received book for basis, an all-star cast and a decent filmmaker. Koch’s novel has already two film adaptations in Italy and The Netherlands that were moderate successes, so while redundant, a Hollywood version should’ve been fine. But instead, it was somehow all wasted away.

At a high-end NYC restaurant on a school night, brothers Paul (Steve Coogan) and Stan (Richard Gere) are having a fancy dinner with their wives Claire (Laura Linney) and Katelyn (Rebecca Hall). Stan is in the middle of running for governor while Paul is recovering from a nervous breakdown. Both couples’

children are also in the midst of being involved in a tragic incident that they want to make sure doesn’t go public. Chloe Sevigny co-stars as Stan’s ex-wife.

Moverman has been involved with movies like I’m Not There (2007) and Love & Mercy (2014), so it’s frustrating to see how much of a step down The Dinner is.

There is no consistent tone throughout the whole movie and the direction is shockingly amateurish. Too many outof-place flashback sequences could have been shortened or even put in a whole different movie. The film would have served well if the majority of the story took place at just the restaurant. On top of that, the main actor, Coogan is woefully miscast and borderline obnoxious with a put-on accent that sounds like an insufferable Woody Allen impression. DP

Not Out of the Water Yet Great white sharks still abundant in south OC waters

ore than two hours on the Dana Wharf Sportfishing boat and there was nothing but ocean to be seen, let alone the elusive creatures sought by the ship’s captain.

A few surfers were out in the water, but a gathering of curious kayakers were on the lookout for great white sharks, which have been spotted frequently in the last few weeks, from San Onofre State Beach to Doheny.

On Saturday, May 13, captain Todd Mansur was beginning to doubt if the first-ever shark tour would be successful.

And then the magic began.

“Eight great whites at 10 o’clock!” Mansur bellowed with a hint of relief.

The 30 or so people on board craned to get a look at the stigmatized predators.

At least eight great white sharks circled the vessel as children and adults watched them maneuver.

Mansur said he was speechless.

“I’ve been sailing just about everywhere for years, and I’ve never seen anything like this,” Mansur said over the intercom.

The sharks were spotted by a friend of Mansur’s, and using a drone to search for them, he was able to pinpoint their location.

Mansur said he doesn’t think, but also wouldn’t dispute, global warming played a role in the uptick of sharks seen in the area. He said the reason for this is more likely due to a large grunion run this year, which usually takes place in early May. Grunion are small fish that flop onto the shore each year.

“Water temperature has some relevance on why these sharks are here, but that’s not what’s happening today,” Mansur said.

“Due to different types of currents, we saw a decrease in shark activity in years past.”

The sharks seen on Saturday have been hunting through kelp forests that bloom in the sunniest times of the year, and that’s where the grunion hide, Mansur said.

Mansur said most of the sharks that have been spotted in the last week have mostly been between the San Clemente Pier and Doheny.

“Just the word ‘shark’ puts fear into people, but if you’ve grown up swimming here, then you’ve swam with a variety of different sharks,” Mansur said. “They all come and go to the shallow waters. Certain times during the month of May, you’re likely to see a lot of ‘forage fish.’”

Most of the sharks in the water were juveniles, about 8 to 10 feet in length.

Great white sharks are protected under California law because of over-fishing that caused their numbers to plummet.

Mansur said the earthquake that devastated Sri Lanka in 2005 also affected currents and could be a reason for some of the changes in fish and marine wildlife behaviors. He said people who work at fisheries and ocean enthusiasts in general noticed a large decrease in the fish that were coming to normally plentiful areas.

Similar events that may not have received as much attention could have also steered sharks on a different course.

Two weeks ago, a woman was attacked by a shark at Church beach at San Onofre State Beach and she is still recovering.

People who witnessed the attack suspect the shark was chasing a sea lion and inadvertently attacked the woman.

Whether the sharks will continue to show up around south Orange County beaches remains to be seen. Mansur said he thinks that the grunion runs have ended, it’s likely going to slow down.

“I don’t think it was about climate change, necessarily,” Mansur said of the swell of sharks. “I think it was about food.”

Spring is the Time for Baseball

S

pring is here and that means it is baseball season. This baseball publishing season seems to be a slower than previous springs. However, a new title that all baseball fans should read is Dynastic, Bombastic, Fantastic: Reggie, Rollie, Catfish, and Charlie Finley’s Swingin’ A’s by Jason Turbow. You don’t have to be an A’s fan to like this book and just from a business standpoint, it makes for excellent reading.

Either way, this book will have you surprised, angry, sad and in stitches as Turbow recounts the Oakland A’s dynasty of the early ‘70s. For example, owner Charlie Finley’s frugality knew no bounds; At one time, the A’s only radio station was UC Berkeley’s student-run station, meaning only people within 10-15 miles of the campus could hear games. Furthermore, the A’s often operated with just a skeleton front office crew made up mostly of family.

In addition, the defending World Series champions often played in front of fewer than 4,000 fans.

While sometimes overly generous, Finley always reminded everyone who was in control. While he gets blamed often for free agency, it was going to happen with or without Finley. He owned a team full of all-stars, including Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter and Vida Blue and was too cheap

Dana Hills’ High Senior Reflects on her Dance Career

A

funky fast-paced song played through the speakers while Annalese Von Gremp practiced a dance routine. She moved across the floor, leapt high into the air and wore a big smile.

She’s been dancing with South Coast Freestyle for 14 years, has been on Pep Squad at Dana Hills High School all four years and has competed in dance competitions.

Recently, on a Friday afternoon, Annalese was getting ready for a college dance team audition and for a World’s Championship competition. She said she spends a lot of time in the studio. Her practices run for multiple hours throughout the week.

“Dance has helped me. It sets a schedule for me,” Annalese said.

The school year is winding down, and she’s getting ready to head to Kansas University in the fall. She hopes to become a nurse.

She said it will be weird graduating, but was thankful she had her mom and sister in the dance world all these years. She added as she learned to dance, watching Dana Point Times May 19-25, 2017

her older sister dance inspired her.

“When I was growing up, I would watch (Ashley) and look up to her and see how much she was enjoying it,” Annalese said.

“I would want to be just like her in a lot of ways. I also like having my mom here because it involves her more.”

Annalese’s favorite styles of dance include pom, which she describes as an athletic dancing with pom poms.

“You have really strong emotions and hitting your moves,” Annalese said. “I grew up doing pom and it’s my core dance.”

Her favorite thing about dance is her ability to express herself.

“If I’m ever having a rough time I know I can come here and let it all out,” Annalese said.

As she gets ready to move on to college she reflects on her favorite dance memory.

“At Dance Worlds the first silver medal I got was when I was 11,” Annalese said.

“That was a pretty big deal to me, being named second in the world and getting to experience that with my teammates.”

Her advice for younger, or new, dancers is to always push yourself.

“There’s never a limit of what you can do, and don’t let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do,” she said. “I’ve been told my body wasn’t right for dance and that

makes me upset a little because anyone can dance if they want to.”

Dolphins Deliver in Division 1 Championships Dana Hills High School swimming and diving team capture first-ever CIF-SS title

rom the end of the opening race, the Dana Hills High School boys swimming and diving team was in control at the CIF-SS Division 1 finals on May 13.

The Dolphins, who secured a meetopening win in the 200-yard medley relay, leaned on their depth and top-level talent throughout the day to secure the Division 1 title at Riverside Community College. It was the first CIF-SS Championship in any aquatic sport for Dana Hills.

Thanks to a well-rounded effort, the Dolphins won the meet with a total score of 292.5 points. Loyola, the defending champion, finished second after scoring 282.

The effort of Adam Cole, Trent Pellini, Jack McLaughlin and Jake Ward in the 200-yard medley relay jumpstarted what turned out to be a stellar day in the relays for Dana Hills. The Dolphins placed third in the 400-yard freestyle relay and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Michael Smith and Owen Kao were also members of the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle squads.

In CIF-SS competition, relay events count double, making them crucial to any team with title hopes. Thanks to their considerable depth the Dolphins were able to field teams in all three relay events, where they scored a remarkable 114 points.

“The fact that we had six guys at the top, elite level (in relays), that’s a huge boost for us that a lot of teams don’t have,” Dolphins coach Matt Rosa said.

The Dolphins’ diving team played a crucial role as well.

place finishers, Loyola and Northwood, did not field any divers.

Kao, a junior, pulled off a double-event win in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races. Pellini, a senior, finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley.

The CIF-SS title was three years in the making for this Dolphins’ group. Rosa recounted how, as sophomores, the team’s core group of swimmers had their eyes set on winning a Division 1 Championship before they graduated.

They nearly accomplished the goal in 2015, but finished second. They came dangerously close again in 2016, but settled for another runner-up finish. Finally, on May 13, the Dolphins broke through and won the elusive title.

“All that championship experience was huge for us. We were building within this group, knowing we have the ability to step up and do well,” Rosa said. “This was a special group. Every meet they kept stepping up, swimming well and we were able to finish the season on a high note.” DP

Boys Golf Advances to SCGA Regional

The Dana Hills boys golf team advanced to the SCGA Regional Qualifying tournament on May 18 after a strong showing at the CIF-SS South Coast Team Divisional championship on May 16.

Results for the SCGA tournament were not available at press time.

The Dolphins advanced to the second stage of postseason competition, but not without some drama attached.

At the South Coast Team Divisional at Talega Golf Course, Dana Hills and Brea Olinda finished the day tied for second place. Only the top two teams in the 18-team field could advance, so a sixthman scorecard tiebreaker decided the final outcome. Dana Hills’ Connor Griffo carded an 83 (+11), which bested Brea Olinda’s sixth-man score of 100 (+28).

All five of the Dolphins’ starting rotation scored in the 70s, led by Quentin Hill’s 73 (+1). Hayden Hill and Blake Brothers both carded 75 (+3). Matt Frandel shot a 78 (+6) and Cody Curtis turned in a 79 (+7) to round out the scoring.

Track and Field Athletes Headed to CIF-SS Finals

Strong performances at the CIF-SS Division 1 Track and Field Prelims earned 11 Dana Hills athletes spots in this weekend’s Division 1 finals at Cerritos College.

The list of Dolphin athletes competing at the finals on May 20 include: Thomas Wilfert (1,600-meter), Hailey Ray (100and 300-meter hurdles), Jennifer Daly (800-meter), Brandon Hough (3,200-meter), Jack Landgraf (3,200-meter), Jackson Rager (shot put) and Max McKhann (discus). The girls 4x400-meter relay team of Ximena Bustos, Amisa Rind, Ray and Daly will also be competing.

Softball Enters Playoffs on a Hot Streak

The Dana Hills softball team was set to host Laguna Hills in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs on May 18.

Results were not available at press time.

The Dolphins, who won the Sea View League championship, entered the game riding a nine-game win streak.

The Hawks bested the Dolphins 5-3 in the only meeting between the two teams on March 18.

Lee Capps Irwin Lee Capps Irwin of Washington passed away at age 89, on March 28, 2017. He was born July 11, 1927 in Beverly Hills, California to Phoebe Sischo Irwin and Luther Wesley Irwin and was the oldest of 3 children. Lee lived in Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano for 26 years.

Lee Irwin and Verna raised 5 children and became involved with a church at every move. He loved singing often found a choir (Barbershop or church) needing his smooth bass voice. While Lee Irwin’s trade was construction he enjoyed life along the way.

After the passing of his first wife, Lee met the second love of his life, Carol Klefbeck. Carol and Lee enjoyed retirement, first in California and now in Washington.

Lee Capps Irwin is survived by wife Carol Irwin, siblings Janet Irwin Weston (CA) and Bruce Irwin (CA), surviving children Mark (CA), Paul (SC), Ruth Ballard (CA), Lynn Sides (TX), Sarah Mato (CO) and step-children Randy Klefbeck (WA), Mark Klefbeck (OR), and John Klefbeck (WA) and their families.

ouldn’t we all use a little more peace, love and understanding these days?

If you answered yes to that question, you’re probably going to want to post up at Salt Creek this weekend for the annual Cosmic Creek Challenge.

A “retro-style” surf contest that pays homage to the creative minds and designs of the 1970s and 1980s, the Cosmic Creek Challenge takes place May 20-21 at Salt Creek and features its own unique format.

Not just your run-of-the-mill surf competition, surfers have the opportunity to sample a variety of period equipment and participate in some throwback shenanigans. To borrow some words from Jimi Hendrix, “Have you ever been experienced?”

The event features four divisions: locals, creators and innovators, pros, and new for this year, a “body surf expression session.”

The local and pro divisions all have to draw cards before their respective heats to determine what board they’ll be riding. Some boards fly, others are dogs; it’s just all the luck of the draw.

The creators and innovators division is slightly different in that a number of wellknown surfboard shapers have committed to making and riding their own boards in the contest. Inspired by the ’70s and ’80s funk, a few of the shapers that will be on hand include Britt Merrick of Channel Islands, Gary Larson of Hobie Surfboards, Dan Bohne of Infinity Surfboards, Donald Brink, Danny Hess, Chris Christenson, Tyler Warren, Travis Reynolds, Jason Bennett of Chemistry Surfboards, Tim Stamps, Cole Simler, and Mike Walters. Mark Cunningham and Kane Wilcox will be headlining the body surf expression session.

his Saturday at the San Clemente Sports Wall of Fame at the San Clemente Aquatics Center, surfboard builder and longtime surf shop owner Bill Stewart will be honored with his rightful place in the city’s celebrated surf history.

Originally from Bowling Green, Kentucky, Stewart surfed for the first time in Hollywood, Florida, in 1963. By 1967, he shaped his first board after a stint whittling foam for Hobie and master craftsman Rick James (not to be confused with the musician of “Super Freak” fame) on the South Shore of Oahu. In 1978, he launched Stewart Surfboards. As they say, the rest is history.

For the last 40 years, Stewart has been inspiring some of the most innovative longboard designs, and made a name for himself thanks to the unique, custom artwork that’s set him apart from most other surfboard brands. In the mid-1980s, he

developed the “Hydro Hull” design, which remains in use to this day. He estimates that he’s shaped over 40,000 himself, with over 100,000 boards being churned out by his production team at Stewart Surfboards.

n this installment of Grom of the Week, we’re celebrating San Clemente’s rising stars that will be representing the United States at the 2017 World Surfing Games in Biarritz, France, next week. Cole Houshmand and Samantha Sibley are two national team members to watch. We caught up with Houshmand to get his thoughts: Dana Point Times: What does it mean to come from San Clemente and represent the U.S. team in France?

Cole Houshmand: “It means a lot, and I cannot wait! San Clemente is such an awesome town. It is a pure surf town, and growing up here has definitely helped me get to where I am today. Being able to represent Team USA is an amazing experience. It’s something I have always wanted to do, and I am really looking forward to it.”

In a few years, this team will be on the Olympic stage. What are your thoughts on that?

“It’s incredible. For surfing to finally be an Olympic sport is game-changing. It has definitely given me and every other surfer something to work extremely hard for. I am really excited to be a part of this game-changing experience.”

What are you most excited about for your upcoming trip?

“I have never been to Europe before, so I don’t know what to expect. I am looking forward to meeting the people and to see the way they live. I want to explore all the different waves. I know Europe has a lot of history, and I’m hoping to do some sightseeing. It would be cool to see a real castle.” DP www.danapointtimes.com
