Zephyr, City Breaks Ground on Residential, Park Project along PCH THE LATEST: Zephyr, a San Diego-based real estate development company, officially broke ground on the South Cove residential and park project on Thursday, Jan. 27.

The community will have 168 residences along Del Obispo and Pacific Coast Highway across the street from Doheny State Beach.

The company acquired the land in July 2015 for $50 million. The three models of homes will range from one to three bedrooms with 883 to 2,341 square feet. Ten residences will feature live/work space, 17 will be offered as affordable housing and all homes will have attached garages.

The development team is working with the city to create a public park that borders South Cove.

WHAT’S NEXT: Completion of the project is scheduled for 2019, and pre-sales will begin in early spring 2017. The model homes will be open in late summer 2017.

Survey Results Show Possible Expansion of Slant Wells in Desalination Project THE LATEST: Findings from an offshore geophysics survey show that South Coast Water District could result in expanding the area of consideration for siting slant wells for the potential desalination plant.

On Jan. 26, Mark Donovan with GHD, Inc.—an engineering firm working with the district regarding the potential project—told directors the results of the survey were “very positive.”

Donovan said there were early assumptions that the Paleo Channel was smaller than they found it to be, and they had modeled certain locations for the slant wells along the San Juan Creek.

According to a staff report, there will be a preliminary estimate for the updated model completed around mid-May. The district also received updates regarding other task orders, including the preliminary design report.

Entangled Gray Whale Disappears after Rescue Attempts THE LATEST: Over the weekend, an entangled gray whale was spotted off the Dana Point coastline, but disappeared after crew members from one of the city’s whale watching companies attempted to free the animal.

Dave Anderson, owner of Capt. Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari, said he received a call about the whale’s location on Sunday, after it was spotted for the first time the day before in Ranchos Palos Verdes.

“A team from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) who is part of the network of the disentangle team, removed some of the gear but left some of it on the whale, and they were looking for the animal,” Anderson said.

He said by time they got notification of the whale’s whereabouts, it was almost sundown. They had a cutting grapple and tried to cut the gear near the whale’s tail fluke as it dove under the water.

“I got the grapple onto the line and it should’ve cut the line free, but it didn’t,”

Anderson said. “I think what happened was the gear slid as the whale was diving and got caught up on the buoy that was being towed by the whale.”

Anderson said it looked like it was a Dungeness crab trap attached to the whale.

Anderson said they were able to attach a tracking buoy and were successful tracking it until it stopped moving. In the morning, they said they found the tracker floating.

WHAT’S NEXT: Anderson said, as of Tuesday afternoon, they hadn’t heard anything about the whale and no one had seen it since it last dove. He added; if the gear did get loose, people may not even realize it’s the same whale. —KP

Three People Rescued from Sinking Vessel in Dana Point Harbor, Police Say THE LATEST: Three people were rescued from a sinking boat in the Dana Point Harbor near the tide pools, police said.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were dispatched to the tide pools around 3:15 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31, for a sinking vessel with three subjects in the water.

Police said the deputies located the vessel’s owner and one of the passengers was holding onto the hull. They were also informed by three free divers a third subject had already been assisted to shore.

Police said Harbor Patrol pulled the subjects onto the fireboat and transported them back to the Harbor for early signs of hypothermia.

THE LATEST: The last round of campaign finances not only showed which City Council candidate raised the most money, but it also showed a group against shortterm rentals raised more than $36,000.

According to the campaign statement, Residents Who Care about Dana Point brought in $36,458.20 between July 1 and Dec. 31, 2016 and $55,295.67 for the entire calendar year.

Monetary contributions were made by a number of Dana Point residents as well as three payments by Headlands Reserve, LLC for two payments of $6,750 and another payment for $6,242.20.

The payments the group made includes those to Copytron, COGS Signs, Strumwasser & Woocher LLP for legal defense, Bell, McAndrews & Hiltachk for legal work, Denise Erkeneff, Rick Erkeneff, Sandie Iverson and Ross Teasley for campaign consultants, Mark Zanides to reimburse the purchase of voter lists from the Orange County Registrar, Director Democracy Unlimited for petition circulating, Dana Point Times for print ads, Smart and Final Supermarket for fundraising events and Lester Hill for loan repayment.

The total expenditures made by the group, between July 1 and Dec. 31, 2016, totaled $48,754.44. For the calendar year, the total was $59,511.53.

Sanford Edward, developer of the Headlands Reserve, said the money the Reserve contributed was to support the short-term rental referendum and that all funds went to gathering signatures.

Michelle Brough brought in the most money among City Council candidates in 2016. Documents show Brough brought in $3,542 for the period between Oct. 23 and Dec. 31, 2016 and a total of $16,837 for the year.

Debra Lewis brought in $4,242 for the same period and $12,174 for the year, and Paul Wyatt raised $3,290 amassing a total of $10,712 for the year. Penny Maynard raised $275 for the last portion of the election and had a total of $1,098 for the year.

Dana Point Women’s Club to Hold Annual Fashion Show/Scholarship Fundraiser The Dana Point Women’s Club will hold its annual fashion show and scholarship fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Talega Golf Club in San Clemente from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

There will be a luncheon, vendors, raffles and a silent auction. The proceeds will benefit local charities and provide scholarships for Dana Hills High School seniors.

Bob Moore: Veteran, Mentor and Public Servant

I

was extremely saddened a few days ago when I learned that my friend Bob Moore had passed away. Many of you knew Bob, some much better than I did. But despite our age difference, and relatively short time that I knew him, I considered him among my closest friends in Dana Point and a true hero and mentor.

I was first introduced to Bob when I joined the local VFW Post 9934, where Bob was already a member. And although our wars were 60 years apart (and he was in the Navy), we formed an instant bond.

We found that we had much in common including our outlooks on our country, faith and family to name a few. I was extremely impressed that after all the service he had already provided during his life, that Bob was still serving our community on the South Coast Water District board as an elected director. And when I decided to run for City Council, Bob generously offered to help me and did so greatly despite the fact that he was in a difficult battle for his own reelection at the time. I will always be grateful to him for the kindness he showed, the time he took, the advice he provided and the introductions he made to assist me when no one would have faulted him for focusing on his own race. But that’s the kind of person Bob was.

But Bob’s generosity with his time did not stop there. He was a Past Commander of our VFW Post and every meeting that he was able to attend, he did. I always

The Dana Point City Council will soon be appointing two new Planning Commissioners to join the three whose terms will not expire until 2019. These Commissioners have the power to approve or deny projects developers submit to them, including decisions on parking, variances or other possible concessions. The future of Dana Point is in their hands. Although their willingness to serve is appreciated, they have little or no direct accountability to the people of Dana Point.

In 2015, the City Council, including Councilmen Viczorek, Tomlinson and Muller, took the unprecedented action of asking for the resignations of all the existing CommisDana Point Times February 3-9, 2017

looked forward to seeing him at least once a month at our meetings. But let me tell a quick story that sums up why he was such a great man and why I admired him so much.

I greatly value character as a trait that is so important to have in our elected officials. And Bob had enough to put us all to shame. As many of you know, Bob decided to run for the South Coast Water District again in 2016, even though he had been unseated in 2014 after roughly a decade and a half of service on the board. Certainly, Bob knew how to run a campaign for this position, but he called and asked to meet with me so he could ask me questions about the upcoming election. Now here I was, a man half his age with just a sliver of the knowledge and experience he had, yet he was asking me for advice. We always hear that, “you’re never too old to learn.” Well, here was a man who didn’t think that was just a platitude. But what really struck me about that meeting wasn’t how Bob had humbled me by asking for my advice; it was how humble a man Bob truly was.

He showed me a campaign letter he had prepared to send to voters and asked for my opinion. I liked it, but told him I thought there was a glaring omission in that it made no reference to his background, specifically that he had served in World War II. Bob had left out his veteran status because most veterans are very

sioners. This resulted in the replacement of two extremely experienced and dedicated Commissioners, who acted responsibly by not approving the controversial Majestic project in Town Center that did not adhere in significant ways to the Town Center Plan supported by the residents.

The newly appointed Commissioners then voted to approve a parking plan for Town Center in spite of opposition from the public. This plan became the basis of Measure I, which was overwhelming rejected by the residents. The three existing Commissioners have the majority votes necessary to make decisions and set precedents. Can Dana Point residents have confidence in the Planning Commission?

The city is in the process of accepting applications for the openings. Hopefully our new Council will vet their applicants carefully regarding not only their qualifications but their responsibility to represent the people of Dana Point. The new Planning Commission should then join the City Council’s efforts to keep the residents fully informed and be accountable for their actions.

I gave him my opinion that it was important to include that part of his background so voters could understand a little about who he was before deciding to vote for him. Ultimately, Bob included one understated line in the letter that said simply that he had served “in WW II,” but he did it begrudgingly. And that character is just one example of why he was a role model to me.

There’s a reason people of this age group are known as “the Greatest Generation.” It’s because it had people like Bob Moore. Bob, you will be missed.

he 2017Academy Award nominations are out and movie fans are quickly checking to see which films they’ve already seen and which they still need to see. The race for Best Picture appears to be between La La Land and Moonlight, but of course there are dozens of other potential award winners to consider as well. One is Deepwater Horizon, which underperformed in theaters but managed to earn two nominations.

Another is Hidden Figures, a financial hit with three nominations.

Horizon, currently on DVD and video on demand, recalls the extensive BP oil explosion and spill in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, Gina Rodriguez and Kate Hudson, the film is a visual masterpiece of special effects, editing and camera work. Academy Award nominations were deservedly given for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Editing. The best way to view Horizon would be on a screen bigger than a laptop or iPhone.

Figures still impressively manages to stay in the top five at the box office and most recently won Best Ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Based on real events, the movie follows three black NASA employees, played by Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe, who helped calculate important data for Project Mercury with both support and reluctance from different superiors. Nominated for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (Spencer) and Best Adapted Screenplay, Figures is probably one of the softest films at the ceremony this year with a simple PG-friendly rating and enjoyment for all ages. nucklehead’s may be one of the only places around that features scallops and Pabst Blue Ribbon specials in one location. Tucked inside the self-described “No. 1 dive bar” is a little-known gourmet wheelhouse, where chef Kevin Cahalan serves his unique take on bar food. Part of his repertoire is the daily “blue plate” special, which includes various dishes created by the chef.

The diver scallops were the feature of the day last Saturday. They were pan-seared and surrounded by toasted couscous with sweet potatoes, tart pickled onions and savory bits of bacon—they were all unified under the guidance of a red wine reduction.

It’s an interesting combination that isn’t bashful about promoting each ingredient to its full potential. The homespun development of flavor in the vegetables provided a foundation on which the scallops could star, Page 10

all while maintaining consistent texture.

Humming Along Dana Point Symphony Orchestra prepares for start of sixth season

T

he orchestra is a beehive. The sound of tuning to one note, with bows and strings of various lengths moved by arms and fingers of various lengths, is the multi-octave, woozy buzz of bees flying to the hive from various directions, in various states of shape, cargo and fitness. As such, the musicians, flown (or driven) in from around Southern California, are the bees; the quarter-dome of the church rehearsal space is a diorama of the hive; the conductor, a 30-something man— Dean Anderson—the queen in a blue pullover and chinos, or the beekeeper, or maybe he represents something instinctual in the bee that makes it fastidious; the violins and violas and double bass are the pollen; and at last, the first sweeping larks of Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme are the honey, sweet and local.

Or not. But then how would you describe the Dana Point Symphony Orchestra? Anderson, also the Artistic Director, likens his role not to a beekeeper, but to a chef.

“It’s like setting up a meal,” he said.

“You want to have balance in taste; not too sweet, not too salty, a little protein. … (If we decide) this piece is kind of heavy, we want to have something light.”

There’s a tendency to try to understand classical music from the outside, and thus a tendency to dismiss it from the outside.

Doing so, of course, is arbitrary and lazy, akin to saying you don’t like rock music, or soup, or cities that end in the letter “e” (go ahead, try to find a person who can resist both the rugged landscape and sophisticated art of Santa Fe and Seattle’s culinary and natural charms).

But submitting, at least, to the fruits of the “standard orchestral repertoire,” as Anderson put it, is easy. It’s easier when you start at a practice—like the one Anderson held with the strings section on Monday; the first gathering since last year of any of the Symphony’s members ahead of their first concert on Saturday, Feb. 4.

Anderson, perched on a high composer’s chair, called out measures at which the orchestra would start to play. Without the woodwinds, brass or percussion, and without the cello soloist pegged for the first performance, Anderson hummed the aggregated melody of the parts unrepresented. He often stopped and ordered the orchestra to repeat a measure or two. He called for the second

violinists to play a challenging passage alone, in order to correct an incongruence.

Unpolished still in this the first 20 minutes of the Symphony season, and without the equalizing quality the rest of the band brings, the brain can understand the parts that make the piece. A passage of plucked strings sounds eerie like this, and then a cascade of pops across the stage, like scanning a rasterized photo, displays the physical phenomenon of seeing a symphony live.

Stripped so far down, it’s easy to appreciate the violins as a sweating onion, before it marries a strip steak, or as an offensive lineman who recognizes a blitzing linebacker and gets just enough on the intruder to allow the quarterback to throw a touchdown. More than anything, though, it’s like seeing inside the multi-layered mind of the composer, who must hear a dozen things in one piece.

This process, of coming to understand the music for what it is, up close with a local group of musicians, is at the core of the Symphony’s appeal, Anderson said.

“I always like to say that I want the audience to have raw contact with the music and just decide for themselves how they react to it naturally before telling them how to react to it,” he said. “Then afterwards if there’s something that intrigues them, we can help them with that.”

Anderson said at concerts this year he will introduce each piece with a “few things about what the audience is going to hear.”

There will also be lectures ahead of concerts for those who want to get context for the music that is going to be performed.

It’s not the only change in the Symphony’s sixth year. There’s a new executive director—Amisha Patankar, social media director for the L.A. Opera—and as the newly appointed artistic director, Anderson has changes in store for the Symphony’s catalog.

“Everything in our program we’ve not done before,” Anderson said. “I feel like now we can move forward with trying new things. This is not about what I like; this is about what I think the community will

appreciate the most.

“We want to pick music that engages them and challenges them, but not too much; you don’t want to leave a concert feeling tired, you want to feel refreshed.”

The new program includes a trumpet soloist and a saxophone concerto; it features an all-Russian program and a concert of only works from the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn.

For the musicians, there appears to be collective relief at the group’s reunion and an opportunity to get lost again in music.

In introducing the changes coming this year, Anderson found himself devolving into now-tired political rhetoric and, noticing this, capped it at, “Let’s make the symphony great again,” which won a particularly knowing and relieving laugh from the orchestra. Nathan Atwater, a double bassist from Pico Rivera, said, “Oh man, I’m just happy to be playing music especially with all the mess going on.”

Patankar agreed that the role of the Symphony, and art in general, in today’s world is critical.

“Art can provide when things are rough,” she said. “When we’re in a situation like we’re in now, it can bring people together to cultivate a sense of appreciation for something beautiful like classical music.”

The Dana Point Symphony, all things considered, is in a position to effect that change: it’s a good symphony, geographically well-suited and performs for an appreciative audience.

“The audiences love it, they keep coming back,” said violinist Weneta Kosmala. “I think the combo is fantastic because you have a very high level quality of music, much higher than you would imagine playing in a church, and the ability of the folks to be so close to us while we play.”

Anderson said what makes the Symphony unique is that musicians—a mix of professional instrumentalists and part-time players—and audience members often spend time after concerts talking with one another.

And since the second season, he said, the 1,000-plus capacity venue at St. Edward has

been packed for every show.

Members of the Symphony are also focused on ensuring classical music reaches the next generation.

“I have young children, and it’s so nice for them to be able to be exposed to classical music,” Kosmala said. “It doesn’t need to be exclusive, but I think we’re losing it, and I think it’s important to maintain it.”

“There’s been such a dearth of classical culture in recent years,” said violinist Brenda Crawford, “but I’m so encouraged by the young people coming into these symphonies, so I think there’s a resurgence.”

Patankar said the key to attracting younger audiences is making sure that, first, people from the region know that Dana Point has a symphony, and second, freshening up the programs to include a variety of music that appeals to varied groups of people.

The spring season for the Symphony is just that—varied and fresh—and there’s talks that it will expand into a summer pops series and then a fall series.

Too, the goal is to expand the size and resources of the Symphony so that it can pay market rate for top musicians and offer the quality and regularity of music that the nearest symphonies (in Costa Mesa and San Diego) do.

The members of the Symphony have largely remained the same since its inception, with a few additions every year. And their chemistry is evident, because by the end of their first practice, the hitches are minimal, and the parts unplayed by instruments not present hang in pregnant silence. In their stead, amongst the musicians, there is eagerness and energy— there is a buzz. DP

longtime San Clemente resident is bringing Dana Point, Capistrano Beach and San Clemente residents together through the power of yoga.

Stacy Volkart has been certified in teaching yoga for about a year and a half, but recently started teaching a class at Christ Lutheran Church a few weeks ago.

“Some of the neighbors in the area, and one of them is my client, brought the idea forth to me,” Volkart said. “She said, ‘We have some people who want to start yoga,’ and they were asking me if I knew anyone. I said, ‘It just so happens I could do it.’”

Volkart approached Pastor Branda Bos about the idea, and the plan was set.

Currently Volkart teaches three classes at the church, Mondays at 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., as well as Fridays at 8:30 a.m.

“We’re working out the kinks of time frames at this point,” Volkart said. “This will be shifting; it seems like it’s working, but I want to facilitate to the masses for whichever time frame works for the group.”

Volkart currently owns two companies in San Clemente, but said she’s been practicing yoga for 12 years.

Volkart’s ultimate goal is to inspire and encourage people to take care of their body, mind and soul. “With this practice you can do that,” Volkart said.

that keeps it strong and healthy as well as finding the moments to keep our mind and bodies at rest,” Volkart said.

Volkart’s classes start out easier to accomodate beginners, but Volkart said as the year goes on, and practitioners develop skill, she will add more depth to the sessions.

“It’s really simple moves right now,” Volkart said. “My goal is to just help them open up and ease into their day.”

Cost for the class is $5 and part of that will be donated to the church.

“It makes it more accessible,” Volkart said. “It’s something Pastor Brenda and I talked about, making it easier for people who don’t have the financial surplus to do stuff like this. I think it hinders a lot of people from even trying it because they think it’s too much money.”

In the future, Volkart said she hopes she can bring some other instructors on board to show people the different techniques of teaching and practices.

“There are so many people out there practicing and teaching and all the different avenues, so people can see what every different person brings to the practice but it will also open people’s minds,” Volkart said.

She would also like to have a wide range of ages involved in the group.

“It would be nice for the seniors to feel like they have something to go and do in the area,” Volkart said. DP

Robert Moore, Longtime Dana Point Resident, Passes Away DANA POINT TIMES

L

ongtime Dana Point resident Robert W. (Bob) Moore, 92, recently passed away after battling a health condition for several years.

Moore was born in Dallas, Texas, in January 1924. He moved to California in 1941 and married June French in 1942.

After moving to South Orange County, Moore served on many boards throughout the Dana Point community, including the South Coast Water District, Independent Special District of Orange County and more.

This past election season, Moore ran for a seat on the South Coast Water District board. Previously, he was on the board for 13 years where he served as president, vice president andchair of the finance committee.

Moore served in the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer and is a World War II veteran. He was a life member and past Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9934 and the American Legion, Post #222 as well as the Dana Point 5th Marines Regiment Support Group.

After serving in the war, Moore worked in furniture sales/management for several large firms and later owned two furniture

manufacturing plants after he moved to Dana Point.

Bob and June had four children, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Moore was a member of South Shores Church for 40 years, where he served as a Deacon, an usher and other roles.

“I owe every bit of optimism I have to the man who drove thousands of miles and flew millions of miles around the country selling furniture in order to allow his children and my mother (who died 16 years ago) to have a better life than he started with, in Sherman, Texas. We did have a better start, and middle, and ‘older age,’ because he did so much for us,” Bob Moore Jr., posted on social media recently.

His memorial service will be held on Friday, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m., followed by a reception at South Shores Church. DP

ebruary 1 marked the date that student-athletes across the country competing in certain sports could finally declare their college of choice by signing their National Letters of Intent.

The Feb. 1 signing date is limited to players competing in football, soccer and boys water polo, but most high schools in the area hold ceremonies for all athletes that have committed.

At Dana Hills High School, 12 studentathletes took part in a signing day ceremony before school began and were celebrated by their coaches, families and friends.

The class of 2017 that will be headed to the collegiate ranks was a strong one at Dana Hills. The baseball program led the way with three commits, and the softball, soccer, swimming and golf programs all have two representatives headed to college programs.

Here is a list of the Dana Hills studentathletes that will be competing in college next fall: Jeremy Ciolek (Baseball), Cal State Dominguez Hills; Hans Crouse (Baseball), USC; Joe DeBaca (Baseball), UC San Diego; Kate Donaldson (Softball), Weber State; Chloe Gaynor (Soccer), Pepperdine University; Kathryn Kaloroumakis (Cross

The two teams were all square at 6-6 at the end of regulation, and each team scored one goal in the ensuing overtime and double overtime periods. But it was the Dolphins who scored one more time in the third extra period and kept Mission Viejo off the scoresheet.

Sydney Baba led the Dolphins with five goals and six steals. Lauren Bellavia and Brooke Bradley each had two.

The win kept the Dolphins (14-12, 3-3) in third place in league and squarely in the hunt for a playoff berth.

The Dolphins (18-6, 4-1 league) entered the game trailing the Mustangs (14-8, 5-0) by one game in the league standings. If the Dolphins lose, they will have to hope Trabuco Hills falters down the stretch if they are to stay in the hunt for the league title with two games remaining on both teams’ schedules.

The first meeting between the Dolphins and Mustangs back on Jan. 23 was a defensive battle, and Trabuco Hills emerged with a 36-32 victory.

Robert “Bob” Weatherford Moore February 7, 1924 - January 27, 2017

Beloved Father of Barbara Eatinger, Donnajean Moore, Tina Van Divier, Robert Moore Jr.; loving Grandfather to 6 grandchildren, Great Grandfather to 9 children.

Bob was born in Dallas, Texas and moved to California in 1941. He married June French in 1942, and went off to war serving in the Pacific.

After WWII, he worked in furniture sales/management for several larger firms in the western United States while living in the San Fernando Valley. He later owned two furniture manufacturing plants when he moved to Dana Point.

Elected to SCWD, he served on the board for 13 years. He was very involved in the City of Dana Point and honored as the Citizen of the Year 2000, as well as the Founder’s Day Honoree 2006. Being a giving and energetic person he volunteered in many areas of service to the city. Bob was Past Commander of the VFW Post 9934 and American Legion Post 222 in Laguna Beach where he was also part of the COPS program for the Laguna Beach Police Department.

In his 40 years at South Shores Church, he was a Deacon and an usher plus serving in other areas.

He loved the people of South Shores Church as they were also his family.

here’s some great talent coming out of San Clemente, and I see a bright future in all of these kids,” said Kolohe Andino.

Last week, as part of the Hurley Surf Club program, Andino and friends Jeremy Carter and Ian Craine organized a last-minute surprise for the kids on the Shorecliffs Middle School surf team.

“Two days before the event, we hit up coach Dave Hennings to see if any of his kids would be interested,” explained Carter. “He called me back the next morning and said he had 60 kids signed up.”

Originally Andino had secured the use of a bus from his sponsor, Red Bull, to shuttle the young surfers from San Clemente to Hurley’s headquarters in Costa Mesa, but with such a positive response, they had to ask for a second bus.

“He printed up T-shirts for all the kids and handed them out,” continued Carter.

“We marked the color of one of them, and then during the night we gave one of Kolohe’s boards away. Coach Henning’s nephew ended up winning it, so that was kind of a cool coincidence.”

The evening featured a lecture by Andino during which he touched upon his days as an up-and-coming grommet in San Clemente, what it’s taken him to climb to being ranked number four in the world and the state of American surfing.

Killer Dana Surf Shop Returns to Original Owners

here’s a lot to be said for keeping the business of surfing in the hands of surfers. Everything just kind of works out better when the lunatics are allowed to run the asylum.

Before the financial upheaval of 2008, the surf industry had grown bloated and oversized. It was promptly humbled; hundreds lost their jobs and “brick and mortar” surf shops were particularly hard hit as the downward trend coincided with a mass influx of online sales. But in recent years, as the business of wave riding has bounced back, it’s become abundantly clear that staying small and nimble has its advantages.

Enter Killer Dana Surf Shop in Dana Point. Last week, the original owners, Gary Wright, Chris “Ralphie” Andrews and Steve “Lounge” Price, took back ownership of their hallowed retail space.

“It’s just a grassroots, locally owned surf shop—just like when we started almost 30 years ago,” said Ralphie.

Wright originally opened Killer Dana in 1991 with $11,500 that he scraped together through saving, unloading a used car and a small bank loan. The first shop was about 800 square feet, had about 20 new boards on the rack, one case of surf wax and some miscellaneous clothes and accessories. Ralphie—who’d worked with Wright at the Chart House—joined Killer Dana about a year later. Price was added to the roster in 1996 to help with mail and new online orders.

At its height, Killer Dana had additional shops in San Clemente and Lake Forest. Those have been shuttered as Wright and company are excited to focus solely on the town that’s already given them all so much.

“We’re the new old owners, I guess that’s a good way to put it,” laughed Ralphie. “With all of the renovation going on in Dana Point and all of the growth in the area, we’re really excited to be jumping back into this on our terms.” DP

Mellem… they were all surfing right next to me. Then our crew started coming up,” said Andino. “I have so many friends, tons of friends, just competing down there. Who could be the first one out, that kind of stuff.

We were crazy competitive, and we’re also crazy good friends. And now you have all these little rats frothing out in the mornings… taking all my waves [laughs].”

Besides the 60 “rats” from Shorecliffs, there were nearly 300 others on hand to listen and learn from Andino. Women’s world champion Carissa Moore also offered up some wit and wisdom. And the quarterback of NCAA National Champion Clemson University, Deshaun Watson, also showed up.

He’s apparently been hanging in Dana Point and training for his impending NFL career.

“When you’re super young and you have good surfers to look up to and that are surfing right next to you, it definitely motivates you and pushes you,” said Andino when asked why so many surfers seem to come out of his hometown. “There’s breeding grounds around the world, like Snapper Rocks in Australia, but I think having those guys to look up to and be that close to is rad.”

In less than a month, Andino will set off on the WSL Championship Tour to hopefully vie for a world title, but whether he wins it all or stumbles somewhere along the way, there’s no doubt the kids back home have his back one hundred percent. DP Page 18

here are kids that seem to somehow always end up in the spotlight. Then there are the grinders—the ones that work tirelessly and dedicate themselves to their passion. David Economos falls into the latter category.

At the end of 2016, he broke the seal with a first-ever win in the NSSA Open Men’s division at 54th Street. That was just the start of more good things to come.

Feeling perfectly comfortable in his own backyard at Salt Creek, he took third this past weekend in the Under 18 division at the Surfing America Prime contest. He’s climbed up to eighth place on the Surfing America ratings, with fellow South Orange County surfers Cole Houshmand, Crosby Colapinto and Kade Mason also near the top of the charts.

The competitive surf season is just starting to fire back up again after a mid-winter break, and with momentum on his side as of late, Economos appears to be on a bit of a roll.

“It seems like he’s gaining some rhythm going into the start of the junior pro series that starts up next month,” said his coach Jeremy Carter. “It’s exciting to see all the hard work paying off.”
