Five things Dana Point should know this week Beach Cleanup Planned after Storms Wash Debris on Shore THE LATEST: After heavy storms hit the Dana Point coastline, locals are gearing up for a beach cleanup on Saturday.

Vicki Wiker, a park naturalist interpreter, is organizing a beach cleanup at Doheny State Beach on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 9 a.m.

“The last week brought tremendous amounts of relief to our starving Southern California environment. Unfortunately, the byproduct of rain was huge amounts of trash that flowed down to our local beaches,” Wiker said.

For a number of days in the past few weeks, rain poured down over the city and brought back what is commonly known as the Dana Point waterfall.

Dana Point has seen 5.87 inches of rain this month, according to a report provided by the Dana Point Nature Interpretive Center.

Orange County officials said they agreed a lot of debris was washed up on the beaches, but none of the county’s beaches in Dana Point sustained any damage. When asked if sand would need to be replenished at Capistrano Beach, officials said they don’t artificially replenish that area.

WHAT’S NEXT: The group will be gathering at the picnic tables along the Whale Walk, adjacent to the lifeguard headquarters. Volunteers are asked to bring working gloves, sturdy footwear and clothing to protect hands, feet and skin. There will be a variety of bags on-hand to gather the trash. —Kristina Pritchett

Vehicle Crashes into Harbor, Police Say THE LATEST: A vehicle with two adults and a dog went into the Dana Point Harbor Monday night, Jan. 23, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Department officials.

Lt. Steve Gil said around 9:05 p.m. a vehicle went into the Harbor with two people still inside.

Gil said the two subjects were out swimming in the Harbor and were able to get onto the Harbor Patrol boat. They were Dana Point Times January 27-February 2, 2017

The vehicle, seen in photos provided by Ira Biolos, was completely submerged but was then towed out.

Gil said along with the two subjects was a dog, which was uninjured and was returned to them. Gil could not confirm whether the passengers were male or female, or their ages.

Gloria Dei Public Art Component Approved by Planning Commission THE LATEST: Gloria Dei Lutheran Church’s public art project will come to life after the Dana Point Planning Commission approved the plans in a 4-1 vote.

The plans were tabled by the Commission in November after Commissioners said they didn’t believe the projects were considered “public.” Commissioner April O’Connor, who voted against the plans on Jan. 23, said she still felt the project would not benefit the city as a whole.

New development in the city is required to allocate one-half percent of the total construction costs to an on- or off-site placement of public art as a component of the development. That, or comparable funds must be made available to a public in-lieu art fund. Gloria Dei’s project is estimated to cost $6.6 million, which results in a minimum value of $33,000 for the public art component of the project.

On Jan. 23, O’Connor said she still

doesn’t feel that members of the public will go onto the church’s property to see the art. She asked how Chairman Eric Nelson believed the project benefits the city.

Nelson said he believed if the members of the public did not go to see the art, it would be their choice not to do so, but it would be fully accessible and therefore a benefit.

Based upon the project’s proposal, the art will be in the form of stained glass windows, a contemplation garden, entry wall sculptures, a courtyard fountain and a bell tower, which will cost a total of $236,124.

Commissioner Dani Murphy said the pieces will draw in more individuals, including some from the various organizations that use the church.

WHAT’S NEXT: Karen Schnell, chair of the city’s Arts and Cultural Commission, said the Commission was excited for the plans and believes the project has exceeded requirements. —KP

Dana Point Residents Introduce Open Data Policy THE LATEST: Dana Point residents are currently working to create an open data policy so residents will not only be able to read what’s happening in the city but also understand the information.

During a City Council meeting on Jan. 17, Dana Point resident Ross Teasley spoke about a website, www.opendanapoint.org, during public comment and urged residents to check it out.

“The goal is to increase the number of people who get involved and make it easier to see what the city is up to,”

Teasley said.

According to the website, the mission is to make it easier for residents to understand and participate in city government; improve accountability and build trust between the residents and city government; and make public data resources available and easy to share.

Teasley, and those participating, are asking residents to go to the website and read the draft policy and comment on it.

“It would apply across all departments,” Teasley said about the policy. “Literally the first step is to get people interested and talking about an open policy, and at the same time putting things on the agenda that residents would like to learn more about, and to be able to take part in it without being a burden.”

Teasley has been involved with open government since 2009; he said he’s been working at federal levels and wants to apply some of the methods to the city’s local government.

Teasley said they only just started reaching out to residents, but they plan on forming a local working group. He said they hope to hold a first meeting within the next month, where they will finalize the draft to be able to bring it to City Council.

Rep. Issa Introduces Sober Living Regulation Bill THE LATEST: California Rep. Darrell Issa, who represents the 49th congressional district introduced a bill on Jan. 12 that would amend the Fair Housing Act and Americans with Disabilities Act to regulate sober living homes, residences that provide treatment for people with drug and alcohol addictions.

The bill arose from local discussions in Issa’s district after people insisted legislation needed to be done, and saying that these residences have caused a nuisance in their neighborhoods for years.

In San Clemente, some people have taken to protest the establishment of sober living homes.

WHAT’S NEXT: The bill’s summary is still being put together for public view, according to the U.S. Congressional website, but based on meetings with Issa in San Clemente, the law will likely contain text requiring operators of sober living homes to obtain a license, have permanent staff members on site at all times and adhere to other requirements. So far, five California Republican members of congress have co-sponsored the bill along with one Massachusetts Democratic congressman.

From the 45th Presidential Inauguration

I

t was a great honor to attend the inauguration of our 45th president, Donald Trump, in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 20, and to serve as a commentator on French television on Inauguration Day—in my tuxedo, no less. I’m pleased to briefly share these experiences with friends in Dana Point.

I had served as a state at-large delegate for Trump at the Republican National Convention last summer, and thus after his election victory, was among those invited to the historic events this last weekend.

I was able to personally witness the swearing-in and speech at the Capitol, and though rain threatened the ceremonies, the crowd was really thrilled to hear the loud booms of the 21-gun salute to our new president, the great patriotic music including that of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and a strong speech by the new president, which focused on his campaign's themes.

After the speech, we walked to an open house at the venerable Heritage Foundation near the Capitol and then proceeded to the parade route past Union Station. It was so crowded even despite the rain. I had to leave the parade route however, as I had been asked by the France 24 English language channel—sort of a CNN in Europe—to answer reporter's questions about the inaugural speech. We broadcasted from the roof of a 12-story building that was tented to avoid the rain, and we had a magnificent view of the White House, Washington Monument and Capitol Mall.

After a short dinner at the great D.C. Palm restaurant, we took the Metro in our formal wear to the “Freedom Ball” at the Convention Center and made it there in time to join a crowded but elegant room to see President Trump dance with our new First Lady, Melania, to the Frank Sinatra hit, “My Way.”

We saw a great deal of optimism for our new president and his administration at these events, and I am grateful to have participated in this bit of history and pray this presidency will GUEST OPINION be a successful one for

CLARIFICATION REGARDING PINES PARK RESTORATION Further to Mr. Simmons’ letter in last week’s Dana Point Times, we want to clear up any confusion that may still exist about the proposed use of the lower bluff area of Pines Park. On Jan. 11, 2017, Capo Cares held a community meeting to explore the possibility of restoring Lower Pines Park.

Formerly featuring an amphitheater and bluff-side promenade, this area was abandoned by the county roughly 50 years ago and today is an unsightly “dustbowl” that is slowly eroding down the cliff.

In the interests of restoring this area to public use, we approached the Architectural Guild of South Orange County, which generously researched and prepared a beautiful conceptual design on a pro bono basis. The design considers two options for ADA access—a series of ramps down the slope, or, the community favorite, a beautiful bridge over the adjacent gully which would link all three sections of the park via a walking trail, opening up further coastal vistas.

Our initial thought was that this inaccessible park land be used for a dog zone, which would have been appreciated by the many dog owners who patronize the park on a daily basis, as there are no leash-free

areas in Capo Beach parks. However, in sharing the design concept with the community, it became clear that most residents supported the idea of restoring the park, but many felt that its unique historical heritage and breathtaking views were simply too amazing to be used as a dog park.

After hearing their thoughts, we had to agree that if the city does restore the park as suggested, it should be reserved for general public use. Also, in consideration of the large, dog-owning constituency in our community, we asked that consideration be given to locating a dog zone at another location within Capo Beach.

Capo Cares wishes to express our sincere appreciation to Cindy Fleming, Jim Pekarske and Bob LaCoss of the Architectural Guild for their research and the thoughtful design that we hope will form the basis for this restoration. At last week’s Council meeting, we asked the mayor to place the Guild’s presentation on a future

agenda and that a study be conducted as part of the upcoming comprehensive review planned by the city’s parks and recreation department, to determine the feasibility of the lower bluff restoration at Pines Park.

At the Movies: ‘20th Century Women’ are Still Relevant

E

lle Fanning is lucky enough to be one of the busiest actresses in Hollywood right now, averaging two to four movies per year even though she’s barely out of high school. Of course, you can’t win them all, as they say—Live by Night is already a certified dud from viewers, but Fanning’s 20th Century Women just expanded into wide release and is a much better period piece by comparison.

It also features arguably her best performance to date.

In 1979 Santa Barbara, a two-story house is renovated while five people occupy it: 55-year-old Dorothea (Annette Bening); 45-year-old William (Billy Crudup); 24-year-old Abbie (Greta Gerwig); Dorothea’s 15-year-old son, Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann); and his best friend, Julie (Fanning). William is reconstructing the

house on his own, while Dorothea, Abbie and Julie all mentor Jamie on the status quo of feminism, adulthood and the punk music and culture scene.

20th Century Women is semi-autobiographically written and directed by Mike Mills of Beginners (2010), who once again knows how to utilize pop culture in the background of dysfunctional relationships. Here, instead of a modern fatherson dynamic, it’s a mother-son dynamic from another era. Bening is getting all the critical hype, though Fanning, Gerwig and Zumann are just as impressive. The themes still feel appropriate in modern times even though it’s set in the 1970s and focuses on that decade’s issues. 20th Century Women has a little bit for everyone and is a great way to end January. Dana Hills High School students create nonprofit organization to help other kids

I

nside one of Dana Hills High School’s classrooms, a group of students gathered around laptops, cellphones and notebooks making a list of what phone numbers to call and what supplies they need for an upcoming event.

They’re part of a group called Kids Helping Kids, an organization run by students to help other kids in the community in any way they can.

The 501(c)(3) nonprofit began at Dana Hills two years ago as another branch to the original Kids Helping Kids group founded at San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara in 2002. The Dana Hills group is currently the only organization of its kind in Orange County.

Since forming at Dana Hills, the students—comprised of seniors and four juniors—have been looking for ways to reach out into the community and help any kid they can.

“We’ve largely been focusing on community outreach; the branch in Santa Barbara raised over $2 million, so we’re trying really hard to match that,” said CEO of the group, Miranda Wolford. “We’re also trying to raise awareness in our communities by having fundraisers like restaurant night.”

Since the organization started, they have held tutoring sessions at the high school, held bake sales and various fundraisers, and were able to work with the Princeton Review to donate Advanced Placement test prep books to students who were not be able to afford them.

In the fall, they worked with Hobie Surf Shop and held a concert where local kids performed, and the proceeds went to the organization.

Currently the high schoolers travel to R.H. Dana Elementary School twice a week to tutor the younger students.

“The high school tutors have been a welcomed gift for our students,” said R.H. Dana Elementary principal Christina Portillo.

“The teachers have commented how fantastic the high school tutors are and appreciate that the tutors are so willing to share their knowledge with the students.”

group instruction, and pull small groups of students to work on a specific projects.

For group member Sheila Abazari, the tutoring is especially important.

“It’s not just a buddy system,” Sheila said.

“It’s not just sitting down and saying ‘let’s read a book,’ it’s teaching them. And it’s important because some of the kids don’t speak English that well, it’s not their first language. I went through that in kindergarten; I didn’t speak English well and it wasn’t my first language.”

The group is constantly looking to see what they can do outside of the schools to reach more kids.

“We’ve tried to identify community needs rather than going in and saying ‘we want to help.’ We want to see where help is most needed,” Miranda said. “That’s one of our major goals for this upcoming year, to make sure we’re the foremost organization that kids can turn to when they are in need.”

They’re also focusing on fundraising because they want to be able to provide financial help to Blind Kids Learning Center and other organizations in Orange County.

“We have to make sure we have enough funds to source out before we actually support them,” Miranda said.

Last year, the group felt like they didn’t grow as much because they felt like they

needed more money in their account.

“This year we really branched out and focused on more of our individual talents and capitalized on that,” Sheila said. “This year, we’re learning not just what we can give other people, but what we ourselves have gotten out of it. I know last year it was more us trying to focus on an individual cause or trying to hit everyone; this year everyone here has grown, and that has allowed us to help more people out there. I think that’s really important for our development.”

Sheila said when the group walks into a room and sees the kids smile; it’s worth all their hard work.

The group said they spend a lot of time focused on the elementary school levels because they believe they can benefit younger kids the most.

“We realize that they might not be getting the same privileges and resources we all had when we were in elementary school or even in middle or high school,” Sheila said.

For the students, it’s not just something to put on their college resumes, and it doesn’t fulfill any of their high school course requirements. Instead, it’s something they believe in and hope to see grow to the status that the Santa Barbara branch has reached.

“We’re able to spend time with these kids and see what they go through, and we are able to go through it with them,” said group member Grant Shobar. “That’s one of the things that is so fantastic about this organization.”

The group said they also are learning how to run a successful business, financial fundamentals, how to hold meetings, how to raise money and how to network.

This, they say, is what sets them apart from other school clubs and nonprofits.

“The big [nonprofits] target the children, but they’re run out of large corporate offices. We’re run out of a conference room, and we’re the kids on the ground,” Miranda said.

“We see what change we can have on our community, and I think that’s what makes us different. We’re the students running the nonprofit; there’s no behind-the-scenes of adults, where parents are helping the teachers who help the kids. It’s kids helping kids.”

Ken Nedler, the group’s advisor, said the team is self-governing and very dedicated.

“Being a 501(c)(3), all I can do is advise them,” Nedler said. “I can’t direct, they have to do it. It’s not just a club; clubs come and go.”

The group plans on reaching out to middle schools in the surrounding areas to begin early involvement with the middle school grade levels.

“Most of us are seniors, and there are four juniors, so we want to make sure we have people who are willing and dedicated,” Miranda said.

The seniors say they’re sad to leave the group in the summer, but know it will be successful because the people involved are dedicated. DP www.danapointtimes.com

Bouncing Back from Adversity

t’s funny how column topics come about. In my online newsletter last week, I shared with subscribers an email I had received from a woman named Jessie in Oregon.

Jessie wrote, “I’ve been reading your column for years. I’m one of the fortunate ones. I found love! Thanks for all you do.

I was single for 15 years before Paul and I found each other. Your column was wonderful for helping me realize I wasn’t alone in being older and without a partner. You even quoted me in your newsletter once.

“If you ever do a Volume 2 to your How 50 Couples Found Love After 50 book, I’d be happy to be interviewed, and I’m sure my guy would too.”

That second paragraph in Jessie’s email elicited several responses from subscribers offering to have their stories of meeting a mate later in life included in a book I hadn’t even thought about writing.

Two of the responses came from men whose wives left them after several years of being married.

Glen, Huntington Beach, said, “A few years back, you featured my story about how my wife (high school sweetheart, married 23-plus years), out-of-the-blue abruptly left me in 2008 and filed for divorced, shortly after I retired from 30 years in law enforcement.

“My divorce was the divorce from hell,” Glen wrote. “My ex put me through 39 months of litigation over nothing (no minor children, no business, no off-shore bank accounts, etc.). Why she did what she did is and always will be a mystery, but I don’t dwell on it anymore.

“In 2009, I met Cheryl, a teacher in Orange County. We’ve been living together since 2010. I am beyond blessed to have found Cheryl and thank God every day for her love and devotion.”

Glen added that he’d be happy to have his and Cheryl’s story included in the book I hadn’t even thought about writing.

The second man, Trent, emailed, “You and I corresponded several years ago when I first found your online newsletter.

To clarify Trent’s comment about my ex-wife cleaning out my house and taking off with another man, the former happened but I don’t think she left for another man; I never got an explanation.

But like Trent, I have to sort of thank my ex because what she did in leaving is the reason I started writing 23 years ago about love in the later years, and it also opened the door for Greta to enter my life 19 years ago. Like Cheryl, Greta was a teacher in Orange County.

Men and women can learn from Glen’s and Trent’s stories and to a lesser extent my story. When a spouse leaves without notice, it can be devastating, life-changing and mighty bleak when it first happens. I know of a man who falls into that category currently.

But, in time, both men and women pick themselves up and dust themselves off.

Love can return, and often, the new love is much better than the previous situation.

It’s like a blessing.

Now, about that book I hadn’t even thought about writing, a second volume of How 50 Couples Found Love After 50: If I decide to do it, Jessie, Glen and Trent have already offered their stories. That leaves 47 more couples. Certainly, in South Orange County, there are couples who found love after 50 who would enjoy sharing their stories. As I said earlier, it’s funny how column topics evolve. Some weeks, I just never know from where they are coming, and this was one of those weeks.

orget what you know about Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.

The band’s critically acclaimed eleventh album, which was largely recorded in California, is getting a serious makeover in the heart of San Juan Capistrano. And I’m here to tell you—these young musicians aren’t messing around.

On a recent Saturday morning, a group of students gathered for a rehearsal in the lobby of the Los Rios Rock School, tucked back in an unassuming business plaza off Del Obispo Street. There’s one instructor and 20 or so kids. And although I’ve been witness to some of the astounding performances these students have put on in the past, I didn’t know what to expect.

From the first seconds of Buckingham’s “Second Hand News” to the last haunting notes of “Gold Dust Woman,” I was stunned.

Did the songs have that much energy on the original record?

The airy harmonies in “Dreams” and “The Chain” will give you goosebumps.

Fifteen-year-old Seth Whiteaker made the acoustic guitar picking in “Never Going Back Again” look like a breeze. And I certainly wasn’t prepared for the emotional crooning of 14-year-old Austin Jenner during his rendition of “Songbird.”

“They’re good, right?” Norman said with a grin as he jumped off the stage.

Good is an understatement.

The young rockers I watched are just one group of the nearly 200 students from all over South Orange County who are pursuing their dreams with the guidance of expert instructors at Los Rios Rock School.

The students make it look easy, but growing this miniature music empire in San Juan has been no simple feat.

Rock school founder and co-owner Tyler Marolf will tell you that it took a lot of sacrifice from him and his wife, Melissa.

It took drive, persistence and the ability to turn connections into a dream team of professional musicians. During a time of financial uncertainty, the Marolfs put everything they had into the school, and the risk paid off.

Perhaps Stevie Nicks summed it up best—thunder only happens when it’s raining.

A Dream on Los Rios Street It’s been said that music is energy. If that’s true, then Marolf has enough music in him to power at least 10 rock schools.

The 41-year-old musician-turned-entrepreneur of Los Rios Rock School has an infectious optimism and passion for all things music. Talk to Marolf for a few minutes, and you’ll find yourself wanting to pick up the nearest instrument and give it a go.

A native Iowan, Marolf moved to San Juan Capistrano in 1988. He went to Marco Forster Middle School and grew up not too far from where he and his family live now, in the Los Rios Historic District.

After moving away for a bit, Marolf has called San Juan home since 2005, and it was only a few years later that he decided to take a chance and pursue music as a profession.

Marolf and his drummer friend Chris Bates, along with a couple other musicians, started up a band—The In Between.

Marolf said the move to pursue music came after the recession hit. He had been in the mortgage industry, and he made the decision to live off of savings and write an album. He said his band had decent success, but not enough, and he wanted to find a way to stay in the music business.

And he really wanted to write a second album.

So in 2010, he obtained an in-home business license and took on his first student, drummer Mary LeBlanc—who, Marolf noted, is still a part of the school and now a professional drummer. The school grew in his Lobo Street home over the next 18 months, which he mentioned didn’t always sit well with some neighbors.

“All I was trying to do was write a second album. And I haven’t written it yet. It’s been 7 years,” Marolf laughed. “The kids showed so much promise and learned so fast and it was so much fun. And I thought, this is what I’m supposed to do.”

Learning the Language Los Rios Rock School officially opened its doors off of Paseo Adelanto in 2012 with what could only be described as the most rock and roll ribbon-cutting San Juan has seen. Since then, the school has grown from one student and Tyler as the sole instructor, to nine faculty members and nearly 200 students from across South Orange County.

Last summer, the rock school became Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accredited with the help of curriculum director Dr. Clint Haycraft.

And earlier this month, Marolf signed the school’s very first transcript.

Students enrolled in the private, tuitionbased school have access to weekly hourlong private lessons, professional gear, group rehearsals and can audition to be a part of the school’s live shows. The young musicians can also learn about songwriting, recording and even take AP music theory courses.

Marolf said since its inception, students have performed more than 1,000 songs, and most kids stay for an average of three

and a half years. Patrons of the Coach House or the House of Blues may have noticed the school often has weekend-long performances at such venues.

“I had no idea it would get this big, or that the culture was going to exceed any one of its parts,” Marolf said. “I thought I was going to be teaching 30 students until I died!”

Marolf said the school’s success has largely come from its teachers, who are all professional musicians with degrees in music, and from listening to the students.

“From day one, I’ve never seen him treat a kid like a kid,” said Chris Bates, co-owner of the school. “He immediately connects with them, and gets them to raise their bar. He treats them with the respect he believes they deserve.”

“There was a period of my life, from eight to 14, when no one was listening to me. So you find people who will, and those aren’t the best people sometimes,” Marolf said.

“That’s why our culture here in the school is so adamant about listening to kids.

“The wisdom thing happens fast if you just believe in them,” he said.

Bringing Music to the Masses In addition to growing the rock school, Marolf and Bates have been working for a couple years now on their new company, Teacher Zone, which is also based in San Juan. Together, with their knowledge of music and Bates’ previous experience in software, they created teacherzone.com, a learning management system designed by music schools, for music schools.

They kicked off the effort by cold calling over 4,000 schools in a 10-month period, asking them what they’d look for in music school management software.

A team of seven developers helped create the Teacher Zone software, which today is being tested by more than 8,000 students in 52 schools across 24 states.

With the program, schools and teachers can curate their own content, manage communications and schedules, and handle billing and attendance. Teachers can even record video assignments for students, who can then play them back and work on their technique by slowing the video down or looping difficult sections.

“They don’t have to do what we do, but what they get is Chris and Tyler’s music school business strategy coaching,” Marolf said. He noted that a lot of schools showed interest in learning about a range of subjects, from managing security and building community to booking shows and hiring employees.”

Bates said their goal over the next five years is to get the program out to two million students. Eventually, the duo said they’d like to begin curating content for public schools, and maybe one day even be able to provide the software for free to schools around the world that can’t afford to purchase it.

“We believe that music is the most powerful language on earth,” Bates said.

Boys Hoops Fades Late against Stallions

It was still anybody’s game at the midway point of a Sea View League clash between the Dana Hills and San Juan Hills boys basketball teams on Jan. 25. Both teams were even at the half, but the Stallions were able to inch away late as they pulled off a narrow 56-51 victory.

were led by Devan Garland’s 15 points.

Reed Romo and Zach Stirtz each had 11 points, but it was not enough to match the Stallions’ late charge.

Before defeating the Hawks, the Dolphins had not picked up a victory in six straight matches. The wins put them in the hunt for a playoff berth.

Against Tesoro, Isabel Barnett and Reed Morrison each scored a goal, and goalie Savannah Haag made 10 saves to ensure the shutout.

Dana Hills (6-3-6, 2-2) was scheduled to host San Clemente on Jan. 26. Results were not available at press time. The Dolphins and Tritons entered the game tied for second in the standings.

Mustangs Snap Girls Basketball Win Streak

Trabuco Hills was able to stop the redhot Dana Hills girls basketball team on Jan. 23 in a 36-32 Sea View League victory. The win ended a 12-game winning streak for Dana Hills, which dated back to Dec. 6.

The game went back-and-forth, and the lead never grew to more than three points. Trabuco Hills was able to edge the Dolphins in the third quarter and hold on

for the win. Trabuco Hills’ Jordyn Carrido and Dana Hills’ Maicie Saia each scored 15 points to lead their respective teams.

In the first meeting between two longtime rivals in three seasons, the Dolphins (17-4, 3-1) defeated San Clemente 32-31 in a nonleague game on Jan. 21. Saia led the Dolphins with 14 points.

The Dolphins’ recent win streak vaulted them up the standings in the latest CIF-SS Division 2A coaches’ poll. Dana Hills is ranked eighth in the division.

Chargers Storm Past Dolphins Water Polo

The Dana Hills girls water polo team suffered a 16-3 loss to El Toro in a return to South Coast League competition on Jan. 23.

Dana Hills (14-11, 2-2) entered the game against the Chargers on the heels of a 2-3 effort at the America’s Finest City Tournament in Coronado. Dana Hills earned wins over Martin Luther King High School and Oaks Christian at the tournament.

Dana Hills was scheduled to host firstplace San Clemente on Jan. 26. Results were not available at press time. San Clemente entered the game with an undefeated record in South Coast League play.

Boys Soccer Drops Fourth Straight

The Dana Hills boys soccer team had no answer for Laguna Hills’ Ryan Bishop in a Sea View League contest on Jan. 18. Bishop scored a hat trick and powered the Hawks to a 4-1 victory.

Dana Hills (3-11-3, 0-3) will travel to play Trabuco Hills on Jan. 27 in a league game.

The continuing saga of the road into San Onofre’s Surf Beach

f all this stormy weather lately has you dreaming of hot summer days on the sand at San Onofre, you are certainly not alone. The only problem is that it’s gotten a whole lot harder to get down to Surf Beach.

Seems like every week this winter South Orange County has been hit by a rainstorm. To date, San Clemente’s rainfall total for the year sits at 8.6 inches.

Considering that on January 17, 1895, a staggering six inches of rain fell in 24 hours in town, it hasn’t been the wettest winter in history, but after a half decade of drought, it sure seems excessive. All of the local river mouths have broken through.

San Juan Creek at Doheny, the San Mateo Creek at Upper Trestles and the arroyo at Church are all currently running into the ocean—great for sand replenishment, but brutal for water quality. Twenty-four hours after the last rainfall, OCBeachInfo.com reports that water quality tests for every beach from Salt Creek south to San Onofre was exceeding state health standards. The Orange County Department of Health and the Surfrider Foundation both recommend avoiding contact with the ocean for 72 Dana Point Times January 27-February 2, 2017

hours after rains if an area is susceptible to urban runoff.

Sinus infections and flesh-eating bacteria aside, all these storms have seriously hindered surfers’ ability to hit the beach at San Onofre. The issues began last year after a series of large west swells eroded the beach, eating away at the road into Surf Beach. With big winter high tides and a recent increase in swell activity, the issue has come to a head. At the beginning of January, a section of the road collapsed into the ocean, forcing the closure of the road.

“As many of us winter surfers have found out, the Surf Beach road has had some rain erosion and is temporarily closed until repairs can be made. The San Onofre Surfing Club is working with the state to get this done as soon as possible,” reads a statement by the club on January 10.

They go on to explain “that this is not unprecedented as the same area completely washed out in 1969 and was entirely repaired by the Club.”

The upper lot into the park has remained open throughout the storms, but with only 22 parking spaces, the lot obviously fills up pretty quickly. And be warned, State Park officials have been ticketing cars parked illegally. The classic San O trick of creating your own spot is ill-advised.

“It’s important for people to remember that closing the lot is something that happens regularly when it’s rainy and muddy.

We haven’t really had heavy rains like this since 2009, so some people may have forgotten,” said Rich Haydon, the south division State Parks Superintendent.

“After the road was initially closed, we were able to briefly open it to one-way traffic before the next storm hit,” continued Haydon.

On January 18, the road was temporarily opened to one-way traffic with barriers protecting cars from the cliff’s edge. But after the latest deluge, the road was once again closed. Currently, at its most narrow it’s an estimated 15 feet wide with a drop of 10-plus feet into the ocean.

Before anything can be done, the ground needs to dry out. The current weather forecast is looking at a zero percent chance of rain for the next 10 days, which should make everyone in the area happy.

Meanwhile, Hayden says that State Parks representatives have already submitted an application to the California Coastal Commission for an emergency coastal development permit. They are also working with the Marine Corps since the land is leased from the Marines and they will play a role in the final outcome. The search for a contractor to implement a more permanent, long-term fix is underway, and they’re currently collecting bids.

The solution could involve placing large boulders at the foot of the road to stabilize the area and provide protection from the ocean while the damaged area is repaired and re-enforced. Ultimately, there’s no easy way to restore the road into Surf Beach, but as the San Onofre Surfing Club noted, this has happened before. Sooner rather than later, a plan will be put into place and we’ll be posting up at Old Man’s in no time. DP

ust about every weekend, a kid can find a surf contest to enter somewhere in California. That makes gathering competitive experience relatively easy. It just takes parents willing to tack a ton of miles onto the odometer. But for an up-and-coming talent that wants to get to the top of the pro surfing game, it’s all about traveling and tempting fate at ever-more challenging breaks.

Thirteen-year-old Taj Lindblad appears to have figured this out early. Attending Shorecliffs Middle School, he’s taken to the road in the last year and it’s served him well. Signing on with surf company Quiksilver, Taj’s been recruited to join their Young Guns program, which takes a handful of the hottest kids from around the world and sends them on surf trips together.

Last fall, Taj joined fellow San Clemente star and Quik team rider on a trip to the southwest coast of France (only eight surfers were invited). They scored some epic beachbreak conditions and working with a crew of coaches and filmers, came away with some valuable lessons.

Another year older, some solid contest results and a ton of miles under his belt, we have a feeling some very good things are in store for Taj this year. DP
