Councilmen Carlos Olvera and Scott Schoeffel’s seats are up for the general election. Olvera is the only one of the two who would be able to re-run since Schoeffel has served two terms.

Candidates must be registered voters of the city of Dana Point at the time nomination papers are issued. Candidates may be nominated by registered voters between July 18 and 5 p.m. on Aug. 12. Candidate information packets and nomination papers may be obtained from the City Clerk’s office at Dana Point City Hall.

If any incumbent has not filed nomination papers by Friday, Aug. 12, at 5 p.m., the nomination period will be extended to Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 5:30 p.m.

Five things Dana Point should know this week Festival of Whales Logo Contest Reopens to Public THE LATEST: The Dana Point Festival of Whales public logo design contest has been resurrected.

Five years ago it was closed to the public, but now everyone is invited to submit their California gray whale-centric logo artwork to be the face of the 46th annual event.

The contest had been exclusive to Dana Hills High School students since 2011, when festival organizers launched an art-focused program that involves area youth.

What started as a fine arts-centered program grew to include students from the school’s English, science, math, photography, theatre and culinary arts classes.

Hundreds of local high school students now embark on an annual whale watching trip and participate in various festival events such as Art in the Park—where they showcase art and science displays—and the Whale of a Clam Chowder Cook-off.

“With the objective of building local student involvement in the festival complete, and the quality of student designs developed to a point where they will be competitive in an open call to artists … it was time to once again open the program to the public,” said event coordinator Andrea Swayne.

Entries must showcase the California gray whale for which the festival was founded. Each year, grays make a 10,000mile, round-trip journey from Alaskan waters to Baja California lagoons where calves are birthed before the trek north.

The whales generally pass through local waters from fall to spring.

From the pool of entered designs, the Festival of Whales Foundation Board will choose five finalists. The entries will then face a public vote via social media.

The winning design will be featured on all of the festival’s promotional materials, including: clothing, flyers, print and digital advertising and public buses.

Dana Point Residents Pull Paperwork to Begin Election Process THE LATEST: Four Dana Point residents have pulled nomination paperwork to begin the election process, according to Dana Point City Clerk.

THE LATEST: City staff has been working, and will continue to work, with the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District (OCMVCD) after a mosquito tested positive for West Nile Virus in the city.

Last week, the OCMVCD announced a mosquito found in Dana Point had tested positive for the West Nile Virus for 2016.

This is the first for the city this year, but not for the county. In Anaheim, a woman was tested positive for West Nile Virus, marking the first case in Orange County this year. Mosquitoes have also tested positive in La Habra, Anaheim and Santa Ana. “While the findings are significant indicators that West Nile Virus is present in the local bird populations, many cities in the county have multiple indications over weeks of trapping and testing,” said Jared Dever, Director of Communications for OCMVCD. “The repeatability of positive indications in a given area help dictate where our agency focuses our control and outreach efforts.”

Two OCMVCD inspectors met with city staff members from multiple city departments last week to discuss water impoundment issues, restricted access to water sources, dead bird collection and pickup protocols and performing field investigations of mosquito breeding sites, Dever said.

“The city has expedited their maintenance scheduled for these sites, and OCMVCD has effectively treated them for mosquito breeding,” Dever said.

Dever said it’s important to wear mosquito repellant while outdoors during the summer months.

“Mosquitoes can fly over 14 miles in search of their meals,” Dever said. “So proximity to where they may be resting— shaded or vegetated areas—is largely irrelevant.”

South Coast Water District Votes to Begin Environmental Report on Desal Plant THE LATEST: The South Coast Water District unanimously approved a task order to complete an Environmental Impact Report for the Doheny Desalination Project during the July 28 meeting.

The task order will allow for the EIR, totaling $730,675, and approve task order amendments up to $73,067, a 10 percent contingency, if required.

Director Dennis Erdman told the directors the board should take a step back and really weigh all the options.

“This issue tonight is whether to spend $800,000 on an EIR for a project we’re not sure is the best option to solving our longterm water security issues,” Erdman said.

He added the board should look into regional solutions, that way the board can share costs, risks, benefits and expertise.

“We need to evaluate all of our options before we choose this one,” Erdman said.

General Manager Andrew Brunhart said the price tag of the EIR was not inexpensive, and from experience has seen some EIR with total costs more than $1 million.

“So the chief engineer and I feel that the cost is reasonable,” Brunhart said.

He added that the completion of the EIR was the next step in the environmental permitting process, and once completed would allow the district to begin looking at potential partnerships.

“There’s a need for an environmental impact report in my personal perspective,” Brunhart said. “I don’t see any reason to delay this.”

Brunhart also told the board that the district has heard a lot of positive feedback from the community about the desalination plant.

The desalination plant was originally proposed in 2003 as a way to create a more secure and more locally controlled water supply. In June, the district held a special meeting to discuss a price range of $88 million to $185 million depending on size and capacity.

Financing a Fix CUSD board to vote next week on placing $889 million bond on ballot

hile the campuses of local schools have sat dormant for weeks, the conversation surrounding them has been heating up this summer. Capistrano Unified School District officials have debated for months the best way to begin chipping away at more than $800 million of deferred facilities maintenance across the district, including much needed renovations for schools in Dana Point.

District staff proposed a solution—an $889 million general obligation bond measure, which would be used to leverage state funds to pay for the district’s deferred maintenance.

Over the summer, trustees have discussed several options for collecting those funds, such as a large general obligation bond or smaller bonds for each of the district’s regions. The board decided in July to create a districtwide School Facilities Improvement District (SFID), excluding the Rancho Mission Viejo area. If approved by voters in November, residents within that SFID will be taxed a maximum of $43 per $100,000 of assessed value of their homes.

On Wednesday, Aug. 10, trustees will make the final call as to whether or not they’ll ask taxpayers to vote on such a ballot measure on Nov. 8.

HOW DID WE GET HERE? Beginning in mid-October 2015, a Community Committee on School Classrooms and Campus Facilities began holding meetings on topics including facilities funding. The committee ultimately recommended the district board “pursue additional funds from all possible resources for its school facilities,” “transition to a district-wide funding model over time,” and “pursue a district-wide general obligation bond to further raise additional funds.”

The district then conducted a phone survey in the spring, where 62 percent of the 1,171 Capo Unified voters surveyed said they would definitely or probably vote “yes” in favor of an $889 million bond measure to fund repairs and upgrades to district facilities. After those findings were presented, the board debated back and forth over whether to pursue smaller regional bonds or a districtwide bond, before deciding on pursuing an SFID with Rancho Mission Viejo carved out.

Residents who attended these board meetings spoke both in favor of and against the bond. Some said they wanted to have the chance to vote on funding their children’s schools, while others, including Dana Point Times August 5-11, 2016

a group of concerned Talega residents, said they wouldn’t support the bond measure due to issues such as ongoing over-taxation, mismanagement of MelloRoos funds and lack of transparency.

Carolyn Cavecche, President and CEO of the Orange County Taxpayers Association, addressed the board in July, saying that the district’s bond measure met most of the association’s criteria, with the exception of a specific list of projects the board is committed to using the bond’s revenue on. Several trustees voiced concerns over the lack of a detailed project list, while Trustees Amy Hanacek and Lynn HattonHodson said they felt that it’s acceptable to finalize a list of projects after the bond is passed.

Since then, the district has created a specific list of projects that would be paid for with the new bond. On Wednesday, Cavecche said the revised draft resolution the district sent to her now meets the minimum criteria” for what the association feels “taxpayers should look for in a school bond.”

Trustees are set to review and vote on the revised ballot measure language just two days before the Aug. 12 deadline for placing a bond on the ballot. Two-thirds of the board—five trustees—must approve the measure.

If the ballot measure is approved by the board, and again by district voters in the fall, what exactly would those additional tax dollars mean for schools in Dana Point?

DANA POINT RENOVATIONS ON THE DOCKET In all three Dana Point schools—R.H. Dana Elementary/Dana Exceptional Needs Facility, Palisades Elementary and Dana Hills High School—there are renovations school officials hope to have completed if the bond makes it to the November election, and voters approve it.

At Palisades Elementary School, Princi-

pal Curt Visca said the 52-year-old campus is in need of a permanent HVAC system in each classroom that can be adjusted individually. According to the district’s Facilities Master Plan, renovations could add up to $14.8 million at Palisades, which would include expanding student services and adding restrooms, kindergarten classrooms and a new play area.

Over at R.H. Dana, Principal Christina Portillo said there’s some modernization she would like to see come to fruition, especially as the school moves toward a science and technology academy model.

“As R.H. Dana is transforming into a science and technology academy, our school would be remolded with new infrastructure to allow for 21st century buildings that will support science and technology learning,” Portillo said.

Potential renovations for the 50-year-old school are estimated to total $14 million, and include remodeling student services, expanding new student services, remodeling the library media center, an ADA upgrade and adding restroom facilities, kindergarten classrooms and a play area.

At Dana Hills High School, a 43-year-old building, renovations are projected to cost a total of $72.8 million, and include a new performing arts center, a new library media center, modernizing the swimming pool, new accessible bleachers, a ramp remodel to the football stadium and new parking.

Dana Hills Principal Jason Allemann said the pool deck is more than 40 years old, and even if the school wanted to hold a CIF Championship game in the pool, they couldn’t. Allemann added that residents should know about the scope of the projects, even though it hasn’t been decided whether the bond measure will make an appearance on the November ballot.

“We are essentially asking our citizens to support an investment in updating and maintaining our campus for the amazing

students who attend our schools,” Allemann said. “With that investment, CUSD will need to address the many needs of schools around the district that have dealt with years of deferred maintenance.”

SOUTH COUNTY OFFICIALS OPPOSE THE BOND As of Wednesday, 11 south Orange County elected officials, including Dana Point Mayor John Tomlinson, signed a letter to the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees opposing the proposed $889 million bond measure.

On Aug. 2, Jennifer Beall, a representative of Assemblyman Bill Brough’s office, reported at a San Juan Capistrano City Council meeting that in addition to all south county mayors, Sen. Patricia Bates, Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Lisa Bartlett, Board of Equalization member Diane Harkey and Brough all oppose the bond measure. Beall said the letter was set to be sent to CUSD Tuesday night.

Among several issues listed, the letter states that the district needs to “determine realistic needs and exhaust all potential sources of funding before [the district goes] back to the taxpayers for more money.”

“The goal is to try to have them reach back into the communities and work with the cities before they put such a massive bond [on the ballot],” Beall said.

Good grief people! It's an eyesore to our town! I thought we were going for a Laguna Beach feel to our town, small quaint stores.

I guess I should be grateful that same greedy, Brainiac didn't decide to put in a Walmart!

COUNCIL POISED TO ALLOW SHORT-TERM VACATION RENTALS IN ALL RESIDENTIAL AREAS TONI NELSON, Capistrano Beach

Like most Dana Point residents, I’m interested in preserving the long-term residential nature of our neighborhoods.

Recently, group homes, congregate-care facilities and short-term vacation rentals have been popping up in coastal cities, many of which (including Laguna Beach, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano) have taken steps to restrict such transient uses. In Dana Point, a Short-Term Vacation Rental Ordinance with far-reaching effects could be set for final approval at the Sept. 20 City Council meeting. The proposed ordinance permits rentals of 29 days or less with two-day stays allowed in all residential neighborhoods.

This issue has been before the Council for some years, and most are happy with the safeguards put in place by Chapter 5.38.080 in Dana Point’s municipal code.

ing parking and providing a process for shutting down homes that permit unruly tourists to hold parties or create other nuisances. The ordinance does not, however, limit the number of days of transient use or prohibit the proliferation of vacation rental businesses throughout residential areas. The Dana Point ordinance does not address other categories of transitory accommodations and does not restrict such uses to particular areas of the City.

As it currently stands, the ordinance prohibits short term rentals where HOAs (often) or CC&R’s (rarely) specifically preclude them, but does not extend such protections to ordinary residents unless they organize their tracts and incur legal fees. It is unclear whether the City Council or the Coastal Commission can legally overrule an HOA’s prohibition of such uses.

The problem is the process of amending municipal zoning to allow this use has to go to the California Coastal Commission.

The CCC praised this ordinance, in fact calling it a “model” for other cities. Unfortunately, in suggesting amendments, the CCC extended its reach much further than we anticipated, requiring the ordinance to allow short-term vacation rentals in all residential areas—far beyond the coastal zone in which the CCC normally has jurisdiction. The other issue is that once the ordinance is in place, future amendments or cancellation will be extremely difficult.

The Coastal Commission’s stated goal is to enhance coastal access for all. It would be highly unlikely they would do anything in the future to restrict such access, even if we experienced a huge proliferation and changed our minds.

So, Dana Pointers, if you live in a residential neighborhood, and you don’t have an HOA or CC&Rs that prohibit such uses, you just may wake up one day and have a mini-hotel or two operating next to you.

In the end, this is a controversial issue, pitting those who want to make money by renting their properties as short-term rental businesses via VRBO, Airbnb or other sites, against the majority who prefer to retain the long-term residential nature of their neighborhoods. My recommendation? Get educated on this issue and speak out at upcoming Council meetings or email kward@danapoint.org to put your views before Council. Otherwise, three Councilmen may pass an ordinance that has the potential to change your neighborhoods in significant ways.

At the Movies: Blanking Out with Jason Bourne

knew something was fishy when the poster for the new Bourne movie wasn’t given the usual ‘The Bourne _____’ title, and instead was just simply given Jason Bourne. It’s been almost a whole decade since Matt Damon starred as the popular action hero in The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), ending what was thought to be a trilogy.

Then in 2012, suddenly Jeremy Renner popped up as the lead in The Bourne Legacy. Now we’re back to square one with Damon and Julia Stiles. Riz Ahmed and Vincent Cassel co-star.

Former amnesiac and government assassin Jason Bourne (Damon) is back once again, but this time to find out the truth about his father, who also worked for the CIA. Former operative Nicky Parsons (Stiles) also returns to support Bourne. New CIA director Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones) and cyber ops head Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander) are on the trail for Bourne and Parsons after they discover illegal activity in the division.

The most perplexing thing about Jason Bourne is that Paul Greengrass and Christopher Rouse return as not only director and editor, but also as the film’s screenwriters. It’s both men’s first time writing for the franchise, and it shows.

The plot and narrative for Bourne are lazy and predictable on top of unnecessary. Stiles is given a thankless send off and Damon has barely any lines.

Even talented additions of Ahmed and Vikander are wasted, in between the excessive shaky cam and flamboyant car chases. And it seems this year is the most underwhelming summer movie season since 2009. DP

The Tale of Dana Point’s Jaws

A

s of late, there have been several shark sightings off the coast.

They included several varieties, but the news catcher happens to be the great white shark.

In January, a 6-foot great white was hooked reportedly at the San Clemente pier.

After making it to the surface, the shark broke the line and was free. Then in April, fishing off Dana Point, a kayaker caught a leopard shark.

The great white shark can grow up to 20 feet in length, and weighs about IT’S HISTORY 4,300 pounds. The world

But in California, they were added to the list through the California Endangered Species Act in 2013. Despite the 1973 movie Jaws depicting the great white as a man eater, humans are not targeted. But that may not be comforting to the over 300 people who have been attacked to date with 80 deaths worldwide.

That would include Robert Rebstock of San Marino who was scuba diving near Santa Barbara when a Great White Shark bit into his leg back in 1975. A death was reported in 1984 during a string of attacks north of Half Moon Bay. But in 1976, a great white shark became a big deal in Dana Point. On a sword fishing trip between Dana Point and Catalina Island, a group of fishermen caught a huge great white. It measured 18.5 feet, and was estimated to weigh about 4,000 pounds. It was spotted by an accompanying plane and was captured after a 10 hour fight. It was harpooned twice by Captain Hans Weeren and Larry Mansur. It shot with a .44 magnum and a 30.06 rifle. As it got closer to the boat, the shark tried its best to attack it. Towing the shark, the fishing boat Comanche tied up near Dana Wharf Sport Fishing, while

checking on its disposition. Still active during this time, it would thrash its tail rocking the boat.

A group of scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a team from Sea World of San Diego showed up. Sea World stated it would pay $6,500 for the trophy.

To get it to San Diego, the shark was taken over to the shipyard where a sling was used to lift the shark up by crane and put on a flatbed truck packed in ice for the trip south.

As it turned out, this was not the first time this pair of shark hunters had done this. In the previous year, they had brought in several other great whites, one at 12 feet and another at 17, all bought by Sea World.

At the time, Larry Mansur was quoted as saying he felt Sea World wouldn’t need any more for a while.

fter taking a trip abroad, a Dana Point artist has included new pieces of her work in this year’s Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach.

Marie Tippets has been participating the in the festival for five years now, but this year she introduced pieces inspired by her two-week trip to Japan called “Essence of Japan.”

“I found my soul there,” Tippet said. “This year is almost a new discovery for me.”

Tippets’ style is traditional, and she showcases a lot of still life. The new collection shows people, clothing detail, life happenings, landscapes and more.

“There’s a soothing quality to my work,” Tippets said. “My style felt similar to how the Japanese are, there’s a purposeful placement and perfect presentation.”

Before she began showcasing at the festival, Tippets was a business owner of Marie Tippets Design for 22 years. She created logos and worked with businesses on graphics.

Tippets had to change careers when the real estate industry, and other companies she worked with, began to decline.

“The whole transition into a full-time artist came unexpectedly,” Tippets said.

“I was too young to begin to retire. So I jumped wholeheartedly into my art and it became a passion.”

Tippets went to school for fine art, and even taught some classes. But, she knew that wasn’t what she wanted to do for a living.

While she had her own business, she continued to paint and grow her skills.

“It’s been such a blessing for me, and it’s become such a love of mine,” Tippets said.

with friends every summer. She said she wondered how people were chosen to showcase their work, but it wasn’t until a friend told her how to get involved that she considered applying.

“I thought it was a super exclusive thing, I never thought you could just apply,” Tippets said.

She said she doesn’t get nervous when the festival first begins, instead she just focuses on her work and doing the very best that she can.

“I focus on what I love and what I bring to the table,” Tippets said. “I’m always proud of how well the work is received. If you let that affect your art career, you can become commercial.”

Dana Hills Student Heads to Maine on AP Science Trip

R

ecently, a group of local students in AP Environmental Science were able to join an expedition to Maine to see how climate change is affecting the coast and particularly how it’s affecting the birds.

One of those students, Payton Saso, a Dana Hills High School student, wrote about her experience for the Dana Point Times.

On July 16, we took a red-eye to Boston before sleepily riding on a bus for five hours to Acadia National Park.

Not only were we all amazed by the towering trees that were a deep green, but we were welcomed to Maine with a light rain that made us all stand in the street and stare at the sky in awe. We all then realized we were a long ways from our beachy homes in Southern California.

On that first day, we got to be tourists.

We were able to adventure around Bar Harbor and enjoy a whale watching tour along the isles. That night, however, we made our way to the Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park, which is about two hours south of Canada, to unpack and get ready for the week.

The next morning the 10 of us made our way to the dining commons dressed in hiking pants and hiking boots that we had all just put on for the first time that morning. After breakfast we met with a scientist named Richard, with whom we would be working with for the week. While talking with Richard, we learned that, like many coastal communities, Maine was a crucial migratory path for birds.

As the birds fly from Canada to places as far as Florida and some even to South America, they depend on the fruit to provide food and the trees to provide shelter.

As more carbon is released into the air and our climate becomes warmer, the fruit in regions begins to bloom earlier. By the time the birds migrate and make it to the coast of Maine much of their food source has either died or stopped blooming.

Scientists have tracked these birds and concluded that many species have stopped

coming into the forests and just continue over the water because they know they will not find food there. This causes a risk for birds if they quit their usual stops and take their flight paths straight over the ocean.

This is where our research came in, we started with the root of the problem; the fruit. It is important to monitor the change in fruit over the years and how they correspond with the average climate. As the first group to ever employ this particular research, we saw the importance of our setup. Richard led us out off of the Sundew Trail to find cleared paths called net lanes.

Once on the net lane, teams of three took off into the forest to set up subplots. Each subplot was a certain distance off of the net lane. These subplots were measured and marked. Though the work of setting up hundreds of these was tedious, the accuracy was important. These subplots are used to be able to count the amount of fruit that would bloom in that quadrant.

By having hundreds of random square footage to monitor, scientists will be able to come back to the same spots and monitor at what seasons certain fruits were blooming throughout all of the seasons.

We set up a research that could continue on for decades that will help scientists monitor the fruit that affects the migratory patterns of birds. Even though this research was in Maine, our own California coast is affected by the same changes. It’s important to be aware of the impact our life choices can have on even the smallest berry.

This trip gave me an experience that not many kids get to have. I was able to be in the field and apply what I’ve learned all year to a real life issue.

My favorite part of the trip was not so much the science aspect, but the unique friendships I got to build. There were six of us girls that grew close and we were able to enjoy beautiful sunsets, and an amazing full moon.

Shark Stories Longtime ranger wants to dispel the myths surrounding sharks

T

he first time Jim Serpa came face-toface with a shark, it was not under ideal circumstances.

Serpa, a San Clemente resident and former supervising ranger at Doheny State Park, was diving with friends in the Bahamas. He was 60 feet deep in the water when a friend handed him a large conch shell, which was harboring an unseen hermit crab. The crab reached out and cut Serpa’s finger, drawing blood.

What came next sounds like a scene out of Jaws, only with a happy ending.

A large bull shark was nearby and could sense the blood in the water. It decided to glide in for a closer look. Serpa knew he was in trouble, but once the shark came within four feet of him, he could tell it was not being aggressive. After a few nervous seconds, when man and shark sized each other up, the shark swam off. It was a moment Serpa said he will never forget and it sparked a years-long fascination with the animal.

“Right then, I’m thinking everything I’ve heard about sharks may not be true because I thought I was going to be lunch,” Serpa said from his living room, where shark fossils adorn the walls. “Everything I’d seen on television and these old movies, if there was blood in the water, you’re in trouble.”

His interaction with that shark in the Bahamas caused Serpa to dive headfirst into the world of sharks. He majored in environmental geography and minored in zoology while in college, and had access to observe sharks in the area for years while working at Torrey Pines State Beach and Doheny. After taking countless courses and logging hours in the field, he has become a respected figure in the shark community.

On July 30, nearly 200 people attended one of Serpa’s famous campfire talks at Doheny State Beach. It was standing room only as people gathered around the selfdescribed “educated shark nerd,” hoping to glean some new information about the popular creatures.

Serpa, who is retired after serving as a ranger at Doheny for 23 years, is wellversed on many things. He gives talks about Native Americans, native plants, whales and dolphins. But it’s his shark lectures that always draw the biggest crowds.

The fascination with sharks has been in the public’s conscience since the dawn of modern pop culture. The fin poking above water, the grace with which they move and their physical appearance all make

for ideal Hollywood imagery. From Jaws to the Discovery Channel’s popular Shark Week programming, sharks hold a distinct place in our minds when we think about the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it.

While some may find sharks intriguing, there are others that are downright terrified of them—and for good reason.

As the ocean temperature began to rise over the past three months, several sharks have been spotted in the area. There was also one gruesome attack off the shore in Corona del Mar in May, when a woman was bit by what is believed to be a great white. A humpback whale that died at sea and drifted down the coastline last month also drew in several large white sharks that were feeding on the carcass, which Serpa saw firsthand while on a boat.

Serpa preaches caution during his lectures, hammering home the fact that sharks are wild animals and that swimming alone outside of the surf zone is not a good idea. But, he does not want people to be afraid of going into the water. The title of Serpa’s shark lecture is The Myth of the Monster, and one of his main goals is to dispel the belief that all sharks mean to harm anyone that treads into the water.

“If (sharks) really wanted us, they could have us. There are a lot of people in the water, a lot of sharks in the water and it’s extremely rare to be attacked. There are five to 10 deaths worldwide from shark (attacks),” Serpa said. “They’re not just sitting out there with their bibs on, waiting to get you.”

Decades ago people were convinced that most sharks were vicious man-eaters, Serpa said. But as more scientific research about the animals was conducted, the paradigm began to shift.

The craze that came along with Dis-

covery Channel’s Shark Week programs helped to show sharks in a different light, Serpa said. While some shows occasionally have the gratuitous scene where a shark hunts a seal or another animal in the water, many of the shows now feature interesting alternate angles, like migratory patterns or unique behavior. Serpa and his friends used to call each other after Shark Week shows aired and laugh about what the show got wrong. The public’s newfound appreciation for sharks, coupled with actually getting facts straight, has made Shark Week viewing much more enjoyable for Serpa these days.

“He’s always the bad guy in every movie you’d see. Even in cartoons, (the shark) is the bad guy. But now it’s starting to turn, you’re starting to see other things,” Serpa said. “I think it’s transitioned from this glorified Jaws-esque type thing to what it is now, which is a lot more science-based.”

Serpa tries to condense his knowledge down into a short presentation for shark fans young and old. He brings his fossil collection to his lectures so people can get a better grasp on just how big, or small, some sharks can be. He has placards with multiple shark teeth glued onto them, labeled so people can see the difference between a leopard shark’s tooth and a thresher shark’s tooth.

His career as a parks ranger may be over, but Serpa is still an avid observer of nature. He treks down to the ocean frequently, and stays in touch with his former colleagues, who key him in on interesting sightings they come across on the water.

He normally gives four campfire talks a year, and is planning on holding one of his campfire shark talks at San Clemente State Beach later this summer. DP

he California stop of the Shootout for Soldiers charity lacrosse exhibition will be held at Dana Hills High School from August 6-7.

The event, which aims to use the sport of lacrosse to engage communities across the nation with local military veterans, is a day-long, continuous lacrosse game that features dozens of local teams. Shootout for Soldiers has become famous for providing teams the chance to compete in one of 24 one-hour games.

One of the highlights of last year’s Shootout for Soldiers event in Dana Point was a game between active-duty soldiers and veterans. The event raised $23,975, which was added to the program’s nationwide total of $408,931 raised in 2015.

This year, the event has already raised $30,000 in donations, according to Dana Hills head lacrosse coach Chris Iltis.

Organizers are shooting for a goal of $50,000, Iltis said, and are expecting around 8,000 people to attend.

Proceeds raised at the event will directly benefit Shootout for Soldiers’ four national charities as well as two California-based charities, the United States Veterans Initiative and Team Rubicon.

Caroline Marks defends US Open of Surfing Women’s Pro Junior title

A

s the Vans US Open of Surfing came to a close at Huntington Beach Pier on Sunday, July 31, local surfer Caroline Marks was crowned the US Open of Surfing Women’s Pro Junior Champion for the second year in a row.

Marks, 14 years old, defended her 2015 US Open Women’s Pro Junior title, and earned 1,000 points towards her ranking on the 2016 Women’s Junior Tour for North America, where she currently holds a No. 5 ranking.

Marks and her family lived in San Clemente for two years, and just moved to San Juan Capistrano. She bounces back and forth between living in Orange County and her hometown in Florida.

Marks told the Dana Point Times that defending her Women’s Pro Junior title is the realization of a goal she’s worked hard to attain.

“It’s one of the biggest accomplishments I’ve made, if not the biggest, and definitely my favorite win I’ve ever had,” said Marks.

She felt confident going into the competition after winning the US Open Women’s Pro Junior the year prior, and said she tries to treat every event the same.

“I have the same mindset for every event.

oc Paskowitz has a story unlike most conventional 10-year-olds. Not only does he carry the namesake of his famous grandfather, Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz, he’s also surfed and traveled around the world since he was born, and lived everywhere from the sands of San Clemente to remote islands in the South Pacific.

The Paskowitz family is well-known for being “the first family of surfing,” as Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz, his wife and their nine children, including Doc’s father, Adam, started running the Paskowitz Surf Camps every summer in San Diego, Mexico and New York back in 1972. Doc is now following a similar path as his father Adam. Not only has he helped out with the Paskowitz Dana Point Times August 5-11, 2016

every event my A game. I surfed as strong as I could, and at every event I’m really hungry and always striving to win and do the best,” said Marks.

In 2015, Marks became the youngest woman to surf in a Championship Tour (CT) event at 13 years old after she earned a wildcard spot to surf in the Swatch Women’s Pro at Lower Trestles.

This week, she will be traveling to Bali with Surfing Magazine and other groms for what normally is an all-boy’s surfing trip called Grom Games. Not only is Bali one of Marks’ favorite places to surf, she is the only female surfer to attend the trip.

With tough competition for these groms, only Kobayashi advanced into the semifinals where he placed third and was unable to make it to the finals event.

Houshmand said this was his first year competing in the US Open, and that it was “a big learning experience for me, overall a really good experience, and the biggest contest I’ve ever done.”

He made it far in the Men’s Junior competition, advanced through the Men’s QS Trials and competed in Men’s QS first round but was unable to advance further.

“It was amazing, just seeing how many people were down there, the whole crowd, and being surrounded by the top guys, I was just taking it step by step” said Houshmand when the Dana Point Times asked about his experience surfing in US Open this year.

Meanwhile, Kade Matson and Crosby Colapinto surfed well, but fell just short of advancing into Round 3.

Junior Girl’s Results Izzi Gomez and Samantha Sibley competed against each other in Round 1 Heat 1, with only Sibley advancing into Round 2.

In the Junior Girl’s quarterfinals, Marks placed first in Heat 1, Kirra Pinkerton placed first in Heat 4, Bethany Zelasko finished second in Heat 3, and Sibley took third in Heat 2.

In the semifinals, Marks took first in Heat 1, while Zelasko and Pinkerton competed against each another in Heat 2. Pinkerton took third right behind Zelasko who placed second and advanced into the Finals to compete against Marks.

Marks took first in the finals and Zelasko placed fourth.

Surf Camps for the past six or seven years, he travels from one destination to the next to surf, learning about the world around him.

“One of the reasons we travel is to meet and understand local communities no matter where we are,” said Tracey Paskowitz, Doc’s mother.

Tracey Paskowitz said the family is always trying to “give back”, not just with foundations like Surfer’s Healing, but by being active and helping where it’s needed most.

Doc has lived and surfed in places like Tahiti, Fiji, Kiribati, New Zealand, Australia, the Cook Islands and British Columbia.

Doc said some of his favorite places are the islands he lived on.

“They have the same personality in a way, but they are all different,” Doc said, adding the best waves he surfed were in Tahiti and Canada, while San Onofre and San Diego remain his favorite local spots.

In his most recent travels, Doc has visited some of the same cities his father also traveled to as a child. He said in South Dakota he almost rode a herd of buffalo, and one

of his most memorable experiences was in Rarotonga, where he swam just feet away from 60-foot humpback whales. “It’s one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen,” Doc said.

When Doc grows up, he said he might want to take up where his great uncle, Mel Blanc left off, playing the voices of Bugs Bunny characters, or maybe he’ll become a professional skateboarder or surfer.

“My dad was one of the best skateboarders of his time, and was one of the best surfers in the world behind Bill Hamilton and Mark Richards,” Doc said.

Doc likes to study math, science, chemistry, oceans and music. Some of his hobbies include skateboarding, spear fishing, motocross and building mini robots.

In the next few months, Doc will travel to the east coast with his family following the Surfer’s Healing Foundation. Then he will

Andino and Evan Geiselman were eliminated in Round 3. Griffin Colapinto and Nathan Yeomans advanced into Round 4.

Yeomans was the only San Clemente surfer to make it through Round 4 and into Round 5, where he competed in a two-man heat. He took on Adriano de Souza, the former 2015 CT Champ, and placed second, finishing only 0.13 points behind de Souza. DP
