Five things Dana Point should know this week Painters Use Dana Point as Inspiration for Plein Air Art THE LATEST: As three painters worked on their pieces at Baby Beach, people passing by stopped to watch. A few commented, but most smiled and continued their morning walk.

The three artists are part of a group called Plein Air Mission, named for the group starting their “en plein air” painting outings at the Mission San Juan Capistrano.

They travel through South Orange County, usually meeting once a week, to paint different scenes that they find. Last week, before the rain came in, the group was on the pier near the Ocean Institute while the visiting vessels were in town.

“I enjoy going out on the point,” said David Evans, a Lake Forest resident.

On Tuesday, they each picked different points from Baby Beach to focus on.

The group can vary from two to 15 people, but larger groups are typical only during the warmer months, Evans said.

City Residents Get OK to Serve on Financial Review Committee THE LATEST: The city’s financial review committee will be altered after City Council voted in favor of having city residents serve as “financial watchdogs.”

During the Council’s appointments to the city’s commissions, committees and subcommittees, Mayor Debra Lewis said she had some thoughts on the financial review committee.

“I would like to see it revamped as more of a financial watchdog group,” Lewis said.

She said she would like to see five members on the committee; each Council member would select one resident to review the city’s finances and make reports and suggestions to the Council.

Lewis said she has been discussing the idea with Acting City Manager Mike Killebrew, who supported the idea.

Council members voiced their approval and many said it was a good idea.

“This is not my expertise,” Lewis said.

“We have people out here who have a lot of expertise and have the desire to be involved.”

WHAT’S NEXT: Councilman Rick Viczorek pulled the minutes from a September 2015 meeting from the consent agenda, saying because former Councilman Carlos Olvera voted at the meeting, but was not on the committee, “everything they did is null and void,” and it would be improper to continue discussions about the committee without addressing it.

“I don’t think anything that happened is valid, and under those circumstances I don’t think these minutes have been properly reviewed,” Viczorek said.

The Council agreed with Viczorek and voted not to receive the minutes of that meeting. The items discussed at the September 2015 meeting will now have to be discussed again and reapproved by the current financial review committee. —KP

City Staff Shares Doheny Village Update THE LATEST: During the city’s monthly Doheny Village meeting update, staff told the Council that the initiation of an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) is nigh.

“Staff didn’t want to keep spending money on an EIR if there wasn’t a sense to move forward,” said Ursula Luna-Reynosa, community development director.

In the fall of 2016, the city held two meetings to address the public’s concerns over the form-based code and parking in the area. Since then, city staff said they have contacted Caltrans to determine the feasibility of leasing their property for

parking; Caltrans in return provided an outline to begin the process for their consideration. Staff said they are beginning those steps.

The staff has also been in contact with South Coast Water District with regard to two properties west of Doheny Park Road, and a meeting is being arranged with Capo Beach Church to explore options for the vacant lot on Domingo.

Luna-Reynosa told staff that parking would not be a part of the EIR but is still a critical part of discussion.

Councilman Joe Muller said it would be a bad idea to continue without developing a parking plan.

“I think those issues need to be resolved before we start proposing new zoning codes that the community is not going to agree with,” Muller said. “If parking structures is what the public wants, then the form-based code will not look like it does today.”

South Coast Water District Discusses Doheny Desal Workshop THE LATEST: Members of the South Coast Water District say the next workshop regarding the Doheny Beach Desalination Project could take place in May. During the district’s engineering and operations committee meeting on Jan. 16, Director Bill Green asked why the next

meeting wouldn’t be until then.

Andy Brunhart, general manager of the district, said they need to complete a Value for Money analysis as well as a reliability study before the workshop happens.

Green said they should consider having multiple meetings because there would be a lot of information given.

In November, the district approved a task order, totaling $35,105, to hold the fifth workshop. The workshop is scheduled to answer questions previously raised by the board, present results of a Value for Money Analysis on two project delivery methods and summarize the pros and cons of various aspects of the project.

At the meeting, Mark Donovan from GHD, an engineering firm working with the district on the project, gave updates regarding the project’s other task orders including the public outreach aspect.

Director Rick Erkeneff said the outreach is really crucial to the people in the community about what will happen if the project goes forward.

The district discussed a geophysical survey from which Donovan said results were promising.

“It shows there could be a potential for more than two slant wells on this side of the creek,” Donovan said. “There are a slew of maybes that are on the table now that we didn’t know before.”

WHAT’S NEXT: The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 26 at 3 p.m. at the district administrative office in Laguna Beach. —KP

City Council Approves Camino Capistrano Traffic Calming Project THE LATEST: The traffic calming project planned for Camino Capistrano was approved unanimously during City Council’s first meeting of the year.

The traffic calming project includes narrower vehicle lanes, realigning two side street intersections, raised bulb outs at intersections and adjustment of the roadway striping.

The project is part of an annual resurfacing project and includes pavement rehabilitation/maintenance on streets that warrant the most immediate attention, according to a staff report. It will also replace curb and gutters to provide standard curb heights for storm drainage purposes, it will add and reconstruct adjacent paths of travel with appropriate pedestrian ramps to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Science of Learning R.H. Dana Elementary principal discusses school’s transition to science and technology academy

W

hen R.H. Dana Elementary doors open for the first day of school in August, it will officially open as R.H. Dana Elementary Science and Technology Academy. In the months leading up to this, however, the faculty is implementing new lessons and making changes throughout the campus.

R.H. Dana was one of the schools originally selected for the transition by Capistrano Unified School District in a School Closure Study. As part of the “elementary schools reimagining process,” seven elementary schools are being “re-imagined” to create unique themes and offer parents a choice in the school district. “[The school district] approached us and asked me and my leadership team what we would like to do if we could do something and restructure,” Portillo said. “We asked the staff to look at what makes us unique and what’s not available at the other schools that will help bring in enrollment.”

After discussions between the staff and leadership team, the idea to create a science and technology academy emerged.

“Because we have the Ocean Institute and the ocean, it’s so natural to be focusing on science,” Portillo said. “At the same time, we said technology because it’s integrated into everything you do; they go hand in hand.”

The school staff spent the rest of last school year looking into what a science and technology academy could look like and what they would need to change in order to accommodate that vision. They came up with a three-year plan, met with an advertising agency, created a new logo and wrote a mission statement.

“We’re preparing kids for the future with an inquiry-based curriculum that fosters curiosity and technology-enabled problem-solving,” Portillo said. “Ultimately what we want to look at is creating these science experiments to find real world solutions, and using that technology to support real world research results.”

Although the academy doesn’t officially begin until the fall, students can currently be seen using Chromebooks, doing experiments in the labs and exploring the school’s gardens.

“We were able to purchase Chromebooks for every single student of all grades,” Portillo said. “In kindergarten, they’ve been using them since day one; first graders are learning how to do Dana Point Times January 20-26, 2017

The school has two labs, a primary and an upper-grade lab, both fully stocked.

“We have a science aid that we hired, she helps do all the prep work, helps with the labs, orders supplies and makes sure we have everything that we need,” Portillo said.

Students are able to use wireless internet to support research for their classes and have access to a variety of programs to learn coding.

For the older kids, Portillo said the lessons will let them enter middle school with electronic portfolios of different projects and research they’ve done.

Portillo said she would like to see the school create an outdoor science learning lab in their gardens.

“It’s going to require working with the district, creating plans and getting them approved,” Portillo said. “We really want to have an outdoor seating area where classes can come outside and do their learning and do their lessons outdoors.”

She said she envisions the gardens

having seats as well as whiteboards for the teachers, but it’s in the designing stages and has yet to be approved by the district.

The school received a two-year grant from the Ecology Center to assist with the garden and offer science curriculum lessons.

But the students aren’t the only ones learning new things. Teachers from R.H. Dana are participating in a pilot program with the Orange County Department of Education—a three-part training session on Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

“NGSS is newer standards, and they’re completely different than the science standards we’ve had in the past,” Portillo said. “So we needed to train the teachers on what the shift is involved with these new standards so they can apply it into the classrooms.”

NGSS is a curriculum that integrates science into all the disciplines.

“It’s not only isolating science, but looking at all areas of curriculum,” Portillo said. “We want to have that curiosity, that

wonder about problems and solutions. We want that to drive the kids’ education and to drive their learning.”

The school staff is also partnering with the Ocean Institute to design a program for students in kindergarten through fifth grade that will allow students to learn and explore a specific NGSS topic.

“It would result in a field trip, they will go to the Ocean Institute to learn about the topic, and then use that field experience to design an action research project,” Portillo said. “Then they’ll put it into motion, test their theory and then we would showcase it.”

Portillo said the school partnered with the Institute this year for the fifth graders, but she would like to see the program expand to the younger students.

To ensure the students aren’t going to be either behind other schools or way ahead of the game, Portillo said they meet with middle school and high school principals to discuss what type of lessons they teach.

“My staff went to Dana Hills to tour their outdoor garden and see what [students] can do and see that they can participate in these amazing hands-on programs,” Portillo said.

Another project the school is working on is a brochure to be given out to members of the community, Portillo said.

She said the staff is excited to begin the Academy and parents are as well. Previously, district staff have said the district believes investing in the schools will result in more families choosing the programs and returning to their neighborhood schools.

According to a presentation by CUSD, the school district will measure the success of the schools over the next three years by using student attendance, Smarter Balanced Assessments and parent and student surveys. DP www.danapointtimes.com

A Note from Dana Point's New Mayor

H

ello and Happy New Year! I am very excited to be starting 2017 as a new City Council member and your new Mayor.

It is in that same spirit that I asked the Dana Point Times to try something new with the City Council. Matt Cortina, the Group Managing Editor, and Kristina Pritchett, the Dana Point City Editor, enthusiastically embraced the idea, for which I thank them.

We all live or work in Dana Point. We shop at the same stores. We eat at the same restaurants. We take our clothes to the same dry cleaners. But because we are all living our busy lives, we really don’t get the chance to talk to one another. This year I plan to remedy that and one of the tools to do so will be this column, which I call Council’s Corner. This is the Council’s chance to reach out to you and hopefully get your thoughts and feedback.

Throughout the year, important issues will be coming before the Council. I know that many of you would like to attend the meetings, but understandably just don’t have the time on a Tuesday night to come down to City Hall. My plan is to use our

IN RESPONSE TO THE DOG PARK AARON SIMMONS, Dana Point

The article “Capo Cares Unveils Dog Park Plans, Discusses Options with Residents” [in the Jan. 13 issue of Dana Point Times] incorrectly reports that residents were in agreement for creating a dog run. Nothing could be further from the truth. Two residents pointed out that there’s already a dog park in Dana Point and there are four other dog parks in the neighboring cities. Also, when it was revealed that the proposed dog park would need to be covered in wood chips instead of grass, residents were aghast. Finally, one man pointed out the irony of putting children and play equipment in the corner while the dogs have a magnificent view.

At the end of the meeting, by a show of hands, less than a quarter of the crowd supported a dog park.

Police patrols and police presence is another important topic. I also believe you have the right to know where our money comes from and how the city is spending it. Other Council members have their issues and projects they will want to talk to you about.

In making my decisions, I operate from some core principles. Is this best for Dana Point? How do the residents feel? Can we afford it? Is it practical? The more we know about each other, the better I can answer those questions.

amphitheater, an ideal setting for weddings, photos and annual ceremonies like Veterans Day. The Architectural Guild’s proposed bridge is ingenious, and their renderings look inviting. But, most residents do not want a dog park. The consensus is that this unique gem of a location should not be wasted.

IN RESPONSE TO ‘AIR TRAFFIC NOISE’ CLEVE WILSON, Dana Point

I, like most who read the Dana Point Times, am aware of the air traffic that our proximity to John Wayne Airport (SNA) brings, but this is not news. Speaking as an engineer who has been working on designing aircraft systems for 25 years, I am impressed with the reduction in noise emitted from airborne planes. The airport has been there for a long time and was likely active when Mr. McDonald’s house was being built. The time for comment was when the Public Comment Period was open regarding the changes to SNA. Yes, I can hear the 7 a.m. departures, but I can also hear the three Amtrak trains between 6:30 and 8 a.m.

Comments are constructive when it is early enough to do something with them.

GOLDEN LANTERN IS A RACEWAY PHILIP GIOIA, Dana Point

I have lived in Dana Point for more than

28 years. I live off of Golden Lantern in the “Landings,” or more familiarly, called “The Bible Belt,” due to streets named after books of the bible.

The problem and concern I raise has been in existence since the inception of this city in 1989. The speed limit along Golden Lantern, between Stonehill and Camino Del Avion is 40 mph. Most of the drivers are traveling at speeds of 60 mph or more, especially between the hours of noon and 8 p.m.

I have rarely seen a police presence; in fact, I cannot remember when I have seen the Sheriff along this route, let alone giving out speeding tickets!

I dread crossing Golden Lantern from my community; because of the increased traffic and speeding cars, it presents a challenge. In addition, I often have “tailgaiters” behind me, and they honk and speed by as though I was standing still... it is frustrating and is a worse situation on weekends.

I believe 40 mph is appropriate for the area, considering both the high density of our populous and the presence of high schoolers walking home.

he diner is a quintessentially American institution. Home of the 3 a.m. burger, the omelet dinner, the break-up coffee and the shake after the game, the diner serves myriad roles—and myriad foods to serve those moments.

As a diner, Harbor House is unparalleled in Orange County. It’s got everything from the expansive menu to the casual, well-worn seating to the nostalgic wall tchotchkes (though many would rightly argue that vintage cinema posters hardly do tchotchkes make).

So it’s hard to pick one dish to sum up all that Harbor House represents, but the teriyaki burger is a good attempt. It’s both a monument to the juicy diner burger category, and also a reminder that diner food is best when its locally inspired and invokes cautious optimism.

am doing something a little bit different in this week’s review. I’m recommending three movies that have been out for a while, but are still worth seeing.

January is a dead zone for new releases, and it’s hard to catch so many of the meaty dramas and character studies that come out during the holiday season.

Those include Jeff Nichols’ Loving, Garth Davis’ Lion and Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson; the latter two are still in theaters and the former is on video on demand next week.

Loving is a quiet and touching period piece on Richard and Mildred Loving (Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga), a real interracial couple who took on Virginia and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1967 to make their marriage legitimate. Nichols takes a more intimate and romantic route than what you would typically see in a courtroom drama, and it still works. Lion is another biopic, based on an Indian orphan named Saroo (Sunny Pawar and Dev Patel) who is adopted by an Australian couple (David Wenham and Nicole Kidman) before using Google Earth as an adult to find his biological family. Davis’ film has a strong first half with some excellent child acting from Pawar.

Paterson is a simple, slice-of-life feature that follows a New Jersey bus driver named Paterson (Adam Driver) and his girlfriend, Laura (Golshifteh Farahani), around their weekly routines in a town that also happens to be called Paterson.

Jarmusch is in familiar territory here focusing on an everyday, ordinary citizen, yet it’s not phoned in. If you’re interested in movies the rest of the month, catch these. DP

GUEST OPINION: Book Talk by Dan DeNeve and Maggie Villalobos with the Dana Point Library

I

promise we will not always recommend history books. While it is a favorite of mine and Dan, the library does have something for everyone and so will this article. This month, we wanted to focus not only on Pearl Harbor, but overcoming when the odds are stacked against you.

The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny, and the Fight for Civil Rights by Steve Sheinkin is a dramatic story of the 50 black sailors that, after a massive explosion, refused to work until conditions were improved. These sailors served in a segregated Navy where they loaded bombs and ammunition without training while white officers placed bets on how fast their units could load. On July 17, 1944, a massive explosion destroyed Port Chicago and killed 320 servicemen. After being relocated, more than 200 refused to load bombs until working conditions were safer. They called it justice, but their white officers and higher commanders in the Navy called it mutiny.

Sheinkin goes through the events leading up to the explosion and to where the Port Chicago 50 was at the time of publication.

This book would be appropriate for middle school students and older. While Dana Point does not have a copy on shelf, we can have it sent here.

Another fight for justice during World War II is told in Left for Dead: A Young Man’s Search for Justice for the USS Indianapolis

by Pete Nelson. Inspired by a scene in Jaws, Hunter Scott (11 years old at the time) researches the sinking of the USS Indianapolis and the possibly wrongful courtmartial of Captain McVay. Nelson goes into more depth than Scott’s history project, but it is still appropriate for a middle schooler.

The sinking of the USS Indianapolis was a

tragic disaster and how the Navy treated Captain McVay was an injustice as well. Both Scott and Nelson try to bring the truth to light in this book.

Much has been written recently about WW II since last month marked the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. One such title that I highly recommend is A Matter of Honor: Pearl BOOK TALK Harbor: Betrayal, Blame,

By Dan DeNeve and Maggie and a Family’s Quest for Villalobos Justice by Anthony Summers and Robbyn Swan.

The book is a fast read and gets to the heart of the matter quickly: how much did Admiral Kimmel and General Short know and, based on that knowledge, how prepared for attack were they? The authors provide ample evidence that Washington, D.C. knew more than was passed on to Kimmel and Short. Furthermore, both men were not given enough tools to provide adequately for the defense of the fleet on that fateful day. After the attack, the authors build the case that Kimmel was not negligent, nor derelict in his duties as Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet. While the authors do not make the case for it, there is a faint hint in their mountain of evidence in support of Kimmel that while Roosevelt did not know of an eminent attack, he might have been trying to subtly provoke the Japanese into a war. Finally, we learn that Kimmel’s children and grandchildren have continued the fight to clear the admiral’s name and restore his four-star admiral rank. He retired a two-star admiral after Pearl Harbor. The Dana Point Library owns a copy of this book.

Food and Wine Experience to Benefit Dana Hills Boys Lacrosse

hen parents of players on the Dana Hills High School lacrosse team joined together to come up with a way to raise funds for the boys’ team, they thought big. The result: The first annual Dana Hills Boys Lacrosse Food and Wine Experience will be held at the Ocean Institute on Friday, Jan. 27.

“We asked how we could raise money for the team,” said Rob Wilson, executive chef at Montage Laguna Beach. “We thought of what could work and what could be super successful.”

He said they knew that the girls’ team did a fundraiser with food and wine and theirs was successful, so the family used their connections in the culinary fields and were able to secure some top chefs to participate.

“I’m a Dana Hills alum, [the chefs] have kids that have gone there, or they’ve gone there, and they wanted to help,” Wilson said.

The event will feature eight chefs from Orange County and will pair them with

wineries in order to create special food and wine pairings.

“This isn’t your typical fundraiser,” Wilson said. “It’s a food and wine experience.

Dolphin Water Polo’s Offense Catches Fire Sydney Baba scored a season-high six goals and six other Dana Hills girls water polo players found the back of the net in a dominating 15-9 South Coast League victory over Trabuco Hills on Jan. 17.

Baba, who leads the team and is fi fth in Orange County in scoring, also had one assist and two steals. Lauren Bellavia, Ally Meredith and Sydney Toole each scored twice for Dana Hills (11-7, 2-1 league).

Since dropping its league opener to San Clemente on Jan. 10, Dana Hills has picked up wins over Mission Viejo and the Mustangs to stay in the hunt for the league championship.

The Dolphins will travel to play El Toro on Jan. 23.

Girls Basketball Extends Win Streak to 12 Games The Dana Hills’ girls basketball team’s impressive winning streak was threatened on their home court on Jan. 17 when Laguna Hills showed up for a Sea View League contest. The Dolphins saw a 14-point lead shrink down the stretch, but held on for a 55-51 victory.

The win was the Dolphins (17-3, 3-0) 12th in a row, and it keeps them at the top of the league standings, along with Trabuco Hills (11-8, 2-0). Dana Hills has not lost a game since Dec. 6.

The Dolphins got a balanced effort from its lineup against the Hawks on Jan. 17. Three players scored at least nine points, with senior guard Peyton Romo leading the way with 17 points. Laguna Hills’ Kayla Chang scored a

game-high 29 points in the loss.

The Dolphins will travel to play a nonleague game against San Clemente on Jan. 21 before squaring off against Trabuco Hills on Jan. 23 in a game with big playoff implications.

Hawks Down Dolphins Soccer 4-1 There was no stopping Laguna Hills’ Ryan Bishop on Jan. 18. The Hawks’ senior midfielder wreaked havoc on the field against Dana Hills, notching a hat-trick in a 4-1 Sea View League victory.

Dana Hills had no answer for Bishop’s three-goal effort, as the Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the half and extended the advantage in the second. Laguna Hills’

Juan Gomez also scored and had two assists while goalie James Stephens made four saves.

Dana Hills (3-11-3, 0-3) will host Capistrano Valley in a league match on Jan. 20.

Girls Soccer Bounces Back with Win The Dana Hills girls soccer team picked up its first win in six matches with a 2-0 South Coast League victory over Laguna Hills on Jan. 17.

The Dolphins (5-3-6, 1-2) began league play with back-to-back losses to San Clemente and Aliso Niguel on Jan. 10 and Jan. 12, respectively. Dana Hills was scheduled to host Tesoro on Jan. 19. Results were not available at press time.

Boys Hoops Breaks through for League Win Three players chipped in 10 or more points and the Dana Hills boys basketball team picked up a much-needed 57-39 Sea View League victory over visiting Laguna Hills on Jan. 18. Junior guard Reed Romo led all scorers with 15 points, and Troy Brown and Devan Garland each scored 10 to ensure the Dolphins (7-11, 1-1) picked up their first league win of the season. The win was also the Dolphins’ second in a row, as the team defeated Estancia 53-37 in a nonleague game on Jan. 16.

The Dolphins will host rival San Clemente in a nonleague game on Jan. 21, and resume league play with a Jan. 25 tilt against San Juan Hills.

Jim Copp Named Southern Section Assistant Coach of the Year DANA POINT TIMES

J

im Copp, a longtime assistant for the Dana Hills High School boys and girls cross country programs, was named the Southern Section assistant coach of the year for the fall by the California Coaches Association.

Copp has been a fixture on the Dolphins’ coaching staff since the 1999 season and has resided over some of the most successful teams in school, county and state history.

Copp was an assistant for the 2008 Dana Dana Point Times January 20-26, 2017

Hills girls cross country team that won both the CIF-SS and CIF State Championship.

Since joining the boys team as an assistant, the Dolphins have won eight South Coast League championships, six Orange County Championships, three CIF-SS titles and three CIF State Championships. The Dolphins have also advanced to the prestigious Nike Cross National meet five times since Copp joined the staff.

In 2016, the Dolphins won the South

Coast League, placed second in both the CIF-SS Division 1 and CIF State Division 1 Championships, and placed 14th at the Nike Cross Nationals.

In all, Copp, a former Army Ranger and Ironman triathlon finisher, has 26 years of experience coaching at the high school level, where has also taught baseball, wrestling, and track and field.

Copp’s name will now be submitted for both the CCA’s Southern California assistant of the year and state-wide assistant of the year honors. DP Page 12

For the last eight years, it’s been fun having a surfer in the White House

ight years ago at the presidential inauguration, newly elected President Barack Obama walked down the parade route in Washington D.C. throwing heartfelt shakas to everyone in the crowd.

There are things you don’t unlearn from surfing. No matter where the journey of life takes you, the ocean remains a profound teacher, and as the first African American president in U.S. history made his procession through the capitol, he did so with an air of aloha in his step. One might say he was stoked!

Growing up on the south shore of Oahu, young Barry Obama enjoyed hanging at Sandy Beach, a world-famous bodysurfing spot reputed for its dangerous shore break.

In this cauldron of froth, and foam, and sand, and tubes, the Pacific doles out stout lessons on humility—something that would likely prove to be a powerful asset when negotiating with world leaders. Over the years, Sandy Beach, located on the eastern corner of the island, has broken backs and relegated otherwise healthy men to wheelchairs. But for locals like Barry, perhaps without the ways, means or inclination to longboard in Town or chase big waves on the North Shore, the break is a place where friends and family can gather, get barreled, enjoy a picnic, and as they say in the Islands, “just cruise.”

This week, after eight years as the leader of the free world, President Obama protected expansive swaths of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. In his final days in office, he granted National Monument status to a number of locations up and down the California coast, as well as a multitude of other natural treasures throughout the U.S., including Bears Ears in Utah. It’s my contention that without the sensibilities of a waverider and their keen connection to the environment, he would not have protected half the territory he did. Wherever you fall on the political spectrum, and whatever your opinions on the successes of his domestic and foreign policies, taking bold steps to protect the world for future generations is indeed a noble step.

Last summer, at the top of the president’s reading list was William Finnegan’s Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life, which received a Pulitzer Prize in 2016—yes, a “surf book” was considered the best book in all the land. During his vacation, he was looking forward to finding a good shade tree on Dana Point Times January 20-26, 2017

Maui and settling in to absorb a biography that very much paralleled his own journey in Hawaii. In the private quarters of the White House, he hung surf photos just like all of us do in our homes. And when it was announced that the sport of surfing had been selected for the Olympics in 2020, he gave a press conference in the Oval Office with a couple of world champ John John Florence’s boards behind him (specially adorned in red, white and blue). He even made U.S. Secretary of Treasury Timothy Geithner and his daughter take surf lessons once.

Midway through his presidency, Obama and his family stayed on the North Shore of Oahu during a winter vacation. They chose secluded accommodations near Mokuleia, not far from a surf spot called Silver Channels. At the time, I was on the island covering the North Shore beat for ESPN. On down days, I’d fallen in with a group of lifeguards at Waimea Bay and every day at 10 a.m. we’d meet up at the bay to workout.

Some of the lifeguard crew had been hired by the White House to serve as lifeguards for the president.

“He can’t go bodysurfing. It’s a matter of national security,” said one of the lifeguards.”

“He has to sit on the beach and read or go play golf. I don’t think he’s very happy about it,” said another. “We’ve been taking the girls out on jet ski rides and they’ve been in the ocean every day, but he can’t bodysurf... and I think he really wants to.”

They described how the Secret Service

was always nearby—making sure he didn’t get in past his ankles. We all joked that he was just like every other working stiff that can’t go surfing because sometimes the job comes first. Here’s a guy that commands the world’s finest Navy and he can’t even ride a wave or two. Oh, the irony! It was an interesting look into the life of our wavestarved surfing president.

As this story goes to print, there are 48 hours left in the Obama presidency. I’m going to miss his eloquence and class. I’m going to miss the stability he provided our country. I’m going to miss his humility and pure adoration for his wife and daughters.

And I’m really going to miss having a surfer in the White House—let me put it this way, do you think Donald Trump surfs? DP

ew Year, new beginnings. You know the drill. But for Cole Houshmand, it’s full speed ahead.

Last year, Cole enjoyed a breakout surf season when he won the NSSA Open Junior crown, then quickly stepped up his game to the WSL Pro Junior level, where he carved out third place finishes in both the RVCA Pro Junior and then the Soup Bowl Pro Junior in Barbados. He also underwent a surfing rite of passage when he jumped on a boat trip to Indonesia, producing a video that was widely seen on Surfline.com.

Surfing’s competitive season doesn’t begin in earnest for another month, but already Houshmand’s making statements.

In early January, his surfboard sponsor, Haydenshapes, released a much-anticipated video project that featured him alongside current A-list freesurfer Craig Anderson.

The video’s been widely circulated throughout the surf media, which is giving his profile a healthy boost.

And more than just dropping edits, in the year ahead the 16-year-old goofy-footer will be stepping out onto the world’s stage to start the arduous process of accumulating valuable WSL Qualifying Series points.

Houshmand just made it to the second round of the Shoe City Pro in Huntington, which is a step in the right direction (pun intended). After that, he’s off to Australia for six weeks to surf and compete.

Given the trajectory he’s on, we expect to see a lot more of this San Clemente talent in the months ahead. DP
