Beucler said there will be two ways that residents can visit the beach without crossing PCH at street level. He said the pedestrian bridge over PCH will be one option, and the second option is the San Juan Creek Trail.

The project will have 17 affordable units, and 10 live/work units which will allow buyers to live above their shops, hair salons, etc. Beucler said the prices are not set yet, but the affordable units were an agreement with the city based off median incomes.

Along with the apartments, the project calls for a park, which will house life-size surf icon statues, a Hobie memorial, custom bike racks and more.

Five things Dana Point should know this week Spooky Seas Takes Guests on New Halloween Event THE LATEST: More than 200 visitors headed to the Ocean Institute for a different kind of Halloween event from Oct. 29-31.

During “Spooky Seas,” there were ghost stories aboard the brig Pilgrim, a mermaid, experiments in the mad scientist’s laboratory and participants even dissected a Kraken (a squid) during the tour.

“It was a great event, every one of all ages had a blast and enjoyed seeing our facility in a spooky light,” said Alexandra Latona, director of public programs at the Ocean Institute.

WHAT’S NEXT: “We plan on doing this again next year the Friday and Saturday before Halloween, and hope this becomes a Dana Point tradition,” Latona said.

Headlands Developer Withdraws Offer to Mediate with City THE LATEST: Headlands Developer Sanford Edward now says he is not going to go into mediation with the city of Dana Dana Point Times November 4-10, 2016

Point, claiming the action was a “publicity stunt” on the part of the city.

Edward sent a letter to Mayor John Tomlinson dated Oct. 26 and stated it didn’t make sense that the city declined to enter mediation with the Headlands Reserve, LLC only to later say they would.

“In fact, when closely examined, it appears to be little more than a publicity stunt,” the letter said.

On Aug. 29, the city filed a lawsuit against the Reserve and Sanford Edward stating an indemnity agreement was not upheld. City Attorney Patrick Munoz said the city entered mitigation with Edward before the lawsuit was filed, and failed.

Edward filed a counter lawsuit against the city and said the city has overcharged him more than $600,000.

Munoz said the Council agreed to go into mediation with the Headlands developer.

Zephyr Development to Provide Living Space, Park THE LATEST: The Zephyr project, also known as South Cove, will provide living spaces and a park along Pacific Coast Highway.

The project will include 168 units along Del Obispo and Pacific Coast Highway, where the former mobile home park site was, that consists of one, two and three bedroom apartments, townhomes and twin homes.

“The most important thing is that it’s a barefoot community,” said Chris Beucler, Zephyr’s chief operating officer. “That means it’s a community where you can literally leave the community and walk to

Coastal Commission Postpones Discussion on City’s STR Ordinance THE LATEST: City Council approved a measure on Nov. 1 to request the California Coastal Commission to hold off on voting on the city’s short-term rental (STR) ordinance until the Registrar of Voters verifies signatures from a referendum recently circulated in town that would repeal the ordinance or put it to a vote of the people.

The Coastal Commission previously had the STR ordinance on the Nov. 4 agenda, but marked it postponed once Council approved the decision.

City Council Candidates File Second Round of Campaign Finances THE LATEST: Dana Point City Council candidates filed the second round of campaign fundraising and expense reports.

As of Oct. 22, the filing deadline, Michelle Brough has raised the most money, according to the campaign reports.

The candidates are listed in the order their names will appear on the ballot.

Nadia Khalil filed a Form 470, which states she will not spend or receive more than $2,000, therefore she did not have any other campaign statements to file.

EYE ON DP EYE ON THE ELECTION 2016

Big Decisions, Part III California voters will determine the fate of several major state ballot propositions this year

s part of our ongoing coverage of the 2016 election, Dana Point Times selected several ballot propositions that all California voters will face in November to dissect.

In this final week of pre-election coverage, we’re taking a look at Proposition 57, which would give people convicted of “non-violent felonies” more chances for parole, and Proposition 61, a hotly-contested initiative that would affect prescription drug prices in California.

PROPOSITION 57

To Release “Non-Violent” Inmates In 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that California’s prisons were so overcrowded that they violated the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution—that is, getting locked up in California constituted cruel and unusual punishment.

So, Prop. 47 was passed to help reduce prison numbers—it reduced certain crimes from felonies to misdemeanors, like shoplifting, grand theft, receiving stolen goods, forgery and fraud, if the property ultimately stolen did not exceed $950.

The state’s average daily prison population has dropped by about 8,000 inmates since Prop. 47, and the state estimates a range of $100-$200 million in savings over the next two years.

Critics, however, say that Prop. 47 has led to an increase in residential burglaries and thefts, and an overall state-wide increase in crime.

All of that is a primer for Prop. 57.

If passed, Prop. 57 would give people convicted of “non-violent” crimes more chances for parole.

The reason why “non-violent” is consistently in quotes is because although it’s used in the ballot proposition title, it is arguably the biggest point of contention for those in opposition to Prop. 57. The issue is that the proposition does not indicate which “non-violent” felonies will be Dana Point Times November 4-10, 2016

included in the program, and the state of California only lists 23 crimes as “violent.”

That said, anything that’s not included in those 23 items is considered “nonviolent,” even if those felonies certainly seem violent—opponents point to the fact that inmates convicted of such crimes as assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence and rape could be released under Prop. 57.

So what would be the mechanism to determine if an inmate falls into the gray area where he or she has committed a “non-violent” crime but one that most people would consider violent?

Proponents point to the assertion that no inmate would automatically be given release, and that every inmate subject to potential release under Prop. 57 would have to go before the Board of Parole Hearings, which is made up of law enforcement officials. Proponents also cite that inmates would have to “demonstrate that they are rehabilitated,” and would be subject to ongoing mandatory supervision.

If passed, the measure would immediately affect up to 7,000 inmates convicted of “non-violent” crimes, with 18,000 more potentially eligible for early parole.

Both sides point to the clause in the proposition that it would reward inmates with good behavior as a reason to vote one way or the other—proponents claim it encourages rehabilitation for inmates by incentivizing good behavior; opponents claim it allows inmates convicted of “violent” crimes like murder and rape an opportunity to be released without fully serving their time.

PROPOSITION 61

To Alter Prescription Drug Prices If it weren’t for the onslaught of TV commercials, Prop. 61 might be one you hear about for the first time while filling out your ballot. But there’s a reason for all those advertisements—the proponents and opponents of Prop. 61 (mostly opponents) have contributed more to this ballot measure than any other supporters or opponents of a ballot measure this year.

And no wonder the pockets are deep on this ballot measure: it concerns pharmaceutical prices.

First, a bit of background. The state of California spent close to $4 billion last year in prescription drug costs for its Medi-Cal program, which serves senior, children and low-income residents, as well as its state employee pension program, the Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS).

Now because the state and its agencies can negotiate the price of drugs with drug makers, the price that the state’s agencies pay for the drugs in their programs can vary greatly. But Prop. 61 would prohibit the state from paying any more for prescription drugs than the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs pays for the same drug.

So what affect would this have on drug prices, and what affect would it have on drug availability for those in the VA, Medi-Cal and CalPERS programs? Lastly, would it affect drug prices and availability for California residents outside of those programs?

The short answer is that, claims from proponents and opponents aside, it’s not clear what affect Prop. 61 will have. In fact, it’s not even clear that the state of California even pays more for prescription drugs than the VA—however, proponents of Prop. 61 say the VA pays on average 20-25 percent less for prescription drugs than other government agencies.

So what do we know? The California State Legislative Analyst’s Office, which studies and publishes reports on the state’s budget, looked at Prop. 61 last year and found several possible scenarios if the measure passes.

First, everything could go as planned, and the state could be offered VA prices for drugs, resulting in some yet-to-bedetermined amount of savings. However, drug companies could offset this cost by raising the price of drugs not purchased by the VA, but used in certain Medi-Cal and CalPERS programs.

Second, since drug manufacturers wouldn’t be required to sell their drugs at the VA prices, the state would have to change which drugs would be available in order to meet the proposition’s purchasing requirements. However, doing so might result in the state forgoing its duty by Medicaid law to provide FDA-approved prescription drugs, thus possibly incur-

ring a loss of federal funding.

And third, the drug manufacturers may elect to raise VA drug prices, a move that does have precedent.

So, given the unknowns, we’re left with the rhetoric on either side of the issue.

Proponents claim Prop. 61 is a tool to fight price-gouging from pharmaceutical companies.

“Drug companies are planning to spend $100 million to fight this measure because they know it would cause downward pressure on all drug prices—and cut into their excessive profits,” proponents argued in the official Voter’s Guide.

Proponents also claim it will provide better access to life-saving drugs and save taxpayers billions of dollars in healthcare costs.

Meanwhile, opponents of Prop. 61 claim it would hurt veterans by causing their prices to increase, reduce patient access to medicines, increase bureaucracy and more. Opponents also claim that Prop.

61 only applies to 12 percent of Californians—what they claim as an “arbitrary” grouping—and even excludes many MediCal and CalPERS enrollees.

Be sure to look at the contributions in the box below this article, but let the more than $120 million speak for itself as to the importance of this ballot issue.

Letters to the Editor DEVELOPMENT IN ORANGE COUNTY IS RUNNING AMOK ERIK GIBBS, Dana Point

As many readers are well aware, there is a lot of development taking place in and around Orange County.

In Laguna Niguel right off of the I-5 freeway, I see a new, very large six-story residential housing unit already built and what looks like grading for another one right next door. In Huntington Beach, there are too many new multi-story buildings that I won't even try to list them all. Irvine is turning into a goldmine for developers while more and more beautiful wildlife and land is being destroyed in Rancho Mission Viejo so that 2,537 new homes and a 10-acre retail plaza can be built, woo-hoo!

Oh, and did I also forget to mention that all of this new housing and development is occurring while California is still in a state of drought? I guess it is OK to neglect the added load on the current infrastructure and increased traffic as long as the developers and their supporters are making out like bandits.

Do we really want to live in a place as densely populated as New York City?

When will all of this development stop?

With the added development, what will traffic be like in five to 10 years especially in the summertime? Who are these developers, and when they are done creating this mess and they get their millions, do they have to live here?

Time and time again, I hear people say that we need to build more in order to increase the revenue for the city. This rationale for increased development is so flawed. For example, if a city develops an existing open area and adds new residential housing, commercial and retail space, then yes the city will bring in more revenue, but the city also has added expenses. What about the increased garbage, water usage, electrical demand, policing, traffic, pollution and reduction in the quality of life? So in the end, what have we really gained? More people, maybe a few more stores to shop at, more traffic and pollution due to more cars?

DARK MONEY INFILTRATING DANA POINT POLITICS STEVE STEWART, Dana Point

A mailer* supporting Michelle Brough for Dana Point City Council arrived at our home on Oct. 17. The sender was a Sacramento-based political action committee (PAC), “Taxpayers for Ethical Dana Point Times November 4-10, 2016

Government.” In the ad header there was a disclaimer that neither the candidate nor their campaign committee was involved in funding this mailing. When my question about the mailer was asked to Michelle Brough at the Niguel Shores Men’s Club forum on Oct. 18, she claimed not to know a thing about it, even though a photo of her family was prominently featured in the ad. Taxpayers for Ethical Government is a dark money PAC injecting money and influence into Dana Point politics. I wonder what they want.

The same mailer touts the endorsements for Michelle Brough’s campaign from prominent former Dana Point City Council members Harold Kaufman, Steve Weinberg and Diane Harkey, along with current Council members Carlos Olvera, Joe Mueller, Richard Viczorek and Mayor John Tomlinson.

Consider the outside funding in support of Brough’s campaign and her list of supporters. Some of those supporters share a track record that includes funding the multimillion dollar Strands gate litigation debacle against the Coastal Commission on behalf of Sanford Edward and the Strand; spending tens of millions of dollars on the Town Center/Lantern District improvement program; and what appears to be seven years of operating with multimillion dollars of city budget deficits. We also don’t want to forget their Measure I, a parking giveaway program that 59 percent of the voters voted down last June.

These politicians pose as fiscally conservative public servants, but in Dana Point, their accomplishments have drained our treasury on behalf of special interests and generated a downtown district that will never recover the public investment made in it. Don’t be fooled by the mailers in support of Michelle Brough. She is only running to bring us more of the same.

I urge you to support and vote for Debra Lewis and Paul Wyatt. Electing them to the City Council is the only way we will ever get our town back. *Mr. Stewart provided Dana Point Times with a copy of the mailer.

VOTING NO ON MEASURE M IS NOT AGAINST KIDS CINDY VANGELL, San Clemente

Why do people say that a “No” vote on Measure M means you don’t like kids? I love kids, I even have a couple, but I will vote “No” on M. As I understand it, the board put the bond on the ballot in a rush after some hard-sell phone “surveys” and “facilities committee” meetings. Is that what they call “community engagement?”

I remember how “engaged” with the community they were when they got rid of San Clemente High School Principal Mike Halt—not very much. I was at those

meetings when the community pleaded for his reinstatement—the disregard for our opinion bordered on contempt.

The $889 million price tag is based on an outdated facilities study/wish list. This is too large an amount to hand over to people who have shown zero tendencies toward transparency, and who are currently spending large amounts to engage in legal battles against those who oppose the measure.

The fact that practically every city mayor, chamber of commerce, and even the South Orange County Economic Coalition, are against it is enough reason for a “No” vote. As far as I know, the bulk of support is coming from businesses and large organizations, all of whom stand to financially benefit from its passing. The total cost (if all bonds are issued) will be $1.8 billion—more than double the advertised amount—with interest and administrative costs. So almost one billion dollars will not go toward “modern” and “safe” schools, but to lawyers, bankers, brokers and others who stand to gain financially.

Money will have to come out of our pockets, and I will support a “reasonable” measure, when, and if, the board offers one. But first, I’d like to see more fiscallyresponsible, student-oriented spending, more transparency, and I’d really like to be able trust them.

They should look for ways to save money. Do what we do when funds are tight—economize. In an organization the size of CUSD, it seems impossible they could not find some waste. Spend less on technology used to pigeon-hole and datamine our kids to death. Get creative. And, please keep in mind that we’re still paying off the $65 million bond from 1999, which promised many of the same repairs listed again in Measure M. They should provide us with a detailed list of projects that will be done, that would help gain support. They should aim for more openness and stop with the “inside deals.” We shouldn’t have to read about a new scandal every week on a blog.

And they should work on developing our trust. I would love to be able to trust them. They should listen to our input and let that input be reflected in their decisions. They’ll never please “all the people all the time,” but at least throw us a bone once in a while.

Voting “No” on Measure M means I do care about kids—today’s kids—who will be full grown adults, supporting and protecting families of their own, when these bonds are finally paid off.

hough the poke bowl trend has taken off across the globe it seems—you can probably find a shop in Kansas City—it is a distinctly Pacific dish. It marries fresh fish, sticky rice and typically Asian flavors in herbs and dressings to effect a singular taste experience. And its complemented especially well at Kawamata Seafood with its casual walk-up service and small, communal, outdoor dining area.

There are various combinations of rice, fish and dressing you can select at Kawamata. I went with fresh, meaty chunks of ahi tuna, well-treated and perfectly textured octopus (no small feat), white rice and the “original” dressing of soy sauce, lemon juice and sesame chili oil. Roe and avocado were added on top, and cucumbers, green onions and white onions provided texture and crispness throughout the bowl.

Altogether, the bowl is balanced, but the

joy of eating it is in the pockets of flavor on each bite. Some bites are creamy and evanescent with avocado, tuna and citrus.

Others are forthright and spicy, with the octopus, onion and chili oil. Yet, at the end of the bowl, it’s all one great dining experience.

At the Movies: ‘Christine’ is a Winner for Rebecca Hall

rom her impressive supporting turns in The Prestige (2006) and The Town (2010), to brilliant starring performances in Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) and The Gift (2015), Rebecca Hall is at the point where an Oscar nomination could be around the corner. And this season might be the moment, given her performance in Antonio Campos’ Christine. No, it’s not a new adaptation of Stephen King’s horror classic, but a biopic on a troubled news reporter.

In 1974 Sarasota, Florida, Christine Chubbuck (Hall) is a local TV reporter who is always on the lookout and aiming for quality news stories. But she’s constantly hard on herself, insecure and feels underappreciated at the TV station. Her superior, Mike (Tracy Letts), prefers to give all his leads to

more charismatic reporters like George Ryan (Michael C. Hall), while Christine herself is secretly attracted to George.

On top of that, she hates living with her single mother, Peg (J. Smith-Cameron).

The story behind Christine was also the inspiration for Sidney Lumet’s Network (1976), and the tension leading up to Chubbuck’s ending is effectively tight and unnerving, much like the reporter’s own personality. Campos’ direction is fine and strong, but the whole film is carried by Hall’s tour-de-force effort. She doesn’t hold back on showing us how mentally wound-up Chubbuck’s struggles were. The soft cinematography and decision to have a soundtrack of ’70s pop songs helps to make the film’s tone not too overly dramatic and lets Hall do the talking. If there’s anyone who deserves that fifth Best Actress nomination spot, it’s her. DP www.danapointtimes.com

Veterans Day: A Time to Reflect, Support Those Who Served

nside of Dana Point City Hall, seven veterans gathered around a table.

They all served in different branches of the military, but they all have one common goal: to help other veterans in any way they can.

“We just give back, that’s just what we do,” said Bob Fowler, post service officer at Dana Point’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9934 & Auxiliary.

As Veterans Day approaches, the former service men and women reflected on what the day means and why people should be involved in celebrating it.

“It’s a day to honor veterans, to remember what they went through and what they gave up,” said Marcia Kuehl, a Marine veteran and the post’s adjutant. “Some men gave up their whole families, their lives. On Veterans Day, we’re supposed to honor their memory.”

The veterans around her agreed.

“If it wasn’t for veterans, or active military, you wouldn’t be sitting here today. I wouldn’t be sitting here today,” Fowler said.

The veterans said they believe the passing of an older generation of veterans— those who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam—affects society, but there are ways to make it so their memories are kept alive.

“I think we need to start back at the young levels with what it means to be America,” Kuehl said.

She said when she was younger, she remembers veterans going into schools to talk about their stories and showing their pride for their country.

She added that they also need to share their stories with younger generations of veterans.

“Part of our job is to carry the torch, and have someone remember us, (and) do the things that we pay homage to,” Kuehl

said.

On Del Prado, inside the Dana Point Community Center, Site Director of the Senior Center Vanna Murphy has seen multiple veterans die in the past year “There have been eight veterans who have passed away since last September, its affected all of us,” Murphy said. “The center has gone through a lot in past year; these men we lost dedicated their lives to our country.”

Murphy said there were two men that linger in her memory. One veteran was a Purple Heart recipient.

“He would bring it in all the time, he was so proud it,” Murphy said. “I think it made people realize what they’d done.”

She said another man was a colonel who flew a plane at 17 years old.

Outside her office, three WWII veterans were participating in the center’s Halloween celebration. Each of them have different stories and backgrounds, but all say they were treated with respect when they came home.

Howard Severance, a WWII Marine veteran and a Dana Point resident, said he hitchhiked home to Orange when he returned home.

“I got discharged in San Francisco, hitchhiked home in uniform, and people picked military up like that in those years,” Severance said while snapping his finger. “I’d just get in the car, and they’d ask where I was going. I was blessed. I don’t think I stood anywhere more than 10 minutes.”

On the other side, veterans in the Post’s office said it was very difficult for those who served in the Vietnam War to return home.

“When we came home, we wouldn’t even talk to each other,” Fowler, a Vietnam veteran said. “I took my uniform off at the airport because I didn’t want to get

HONORING OUR VETERANS

On Friday, Nov. 4, Dana Hills High School will be hosting the annual Honor the Valor football game. On Friday, Nov. 11, there will be a Veterans Day ceremony at the Dana Point Veterans Memorial at 10 a.m. The program will include an unveiling of the updated memorial plaques. The monument is located on Selva Road at Strand Beach, off of Pacific Coast Highway. At the Community Center, veterans will be recognized. The room will be decorated in red, white and blue, and each of the veterans will be asked to talk about an experience they’ve had in their military careers. From Nov. 10-13, members of the VFW Post 9934 will be giving out Buddy Poppies for donations. They will be at the Ralphs in Ocean Ranch on Nov. 10, at the Veterans Day ceremony, at Vons in Laguna Niguel and Stater Brothers in Laguna Hills. into fights.”

Kuehl said she saw her grandfather and father return from World War I and II with respect, but when her brother returned, it was the opposite.

“They were not respectful of the people I knew and loved that served,” Kuehl said. “I had to watch my brother come home, and he didn’t get anything. I would ask myself why society had forgotten the veterans.”

Today, the group sees veterans being treated the way they believe they should—

with respect. Though, they all agree that respect should extend past Veterans Day. “They put their lives on the line, and we always look at the veteran but we need to look at the families and their kids,” Fowler said.

Murphy said this is important because some of those veterans, like Severance, were married and had families that were beginning to grow.

“I was married, and we had a baby growing, so I was anxious to get out and get home,” Severance said. DP

Assessing How Much to Talk about an Ex or Deceased Loved One

widow, who is beginning to date again, asked, “How much should a person talk about an ex or deceased spouse?”

I asked eight seniors, some widowed and some divorced, for their opinions.

Gale, a widow, said, “Not enough to bore your current partner. I suggest a mutual exchange where each of you gets to talk about your exes, but briefly. No one wants to hear a running dialogue about an ex, especially if the date involves getting to know your current partner.”

Art stated, “This is how I handle the subject of my late wife. My feeling is that an occasional mention is OK when talking about a place you visited or something that relates to a current situation.”

Marian, divorced, said, “Too much or too little divulged by either person isn’t good for obvious reasons—still grieving/angry or unwilling to take ownership. Being able to talk about previous relationships opens a window to where the other person is in his or her healing and state of mind.”

Gail, also a widow, wrote, “I feel it is appropriate to tell your date that you are a widow or widower and for how long. Offer nothing else unless asked. It is very easy to ‘elevate’ a departed spouse to sainthood and that should be avoided at all times.”

Brenda, divorced, shared, “It’s OK to mention an ex. But don’t point out similarities or differences in your date. Don’t reference your previous life in every event.

Be careful not to bring up ‘we did that’ or ‘she would have liked that’ as that is very annoying. I dated a widower briefly, and he did that. He even told me several times I was just like her. That made me angry.

I think he was trying to justify dating me by making me seem just like her. She had been deceased for 10 years.”

“He was married one time. He doesn’t have photos of his wife out (deceased three years), but he speaks frequently about the life they had. I wonder if he has gotten past the grief and can move forward into a new relationship?”

Dr. John, divorced after a 21-year marriage, said, “Death or divorce, if you were with a partner for a significant length of time, that’s part of who you are, and where you’re coming from. To expect a person to never talk about his or her ex, I think, is to refuse to deal with part of who that person is.

Maria, a widow, agreed with Dr. John: “Since we are older folks, we all have a history. If a person talks about an ex frequently, it likely means he or she is not over the situation. That isn’t wrong; it’s a sign that the healing process is ongoing. It could be the person is still angry, hurt, or the heart has not mended. Perhaps, with more time, the person will be able to focus more on the feelings of the new person in his or her life.

It’s natural for seniors to mention occasionally a former spouse or significant other. But, keep in mind, people who do could be hurting the feelings of the new person. Done often enough, the new person might leave, and then, the talker might regret that she or he wasn’t more conscious of the new person’s feelings.

n Oct. 31, children dressed up as princesses, Star Wars characters and more and participated in different activities throughout Dana Point.

In Capistrano Beach, there was a pizza party at Pines Park. Across the city, The Ocean Institute held “Spooky Seas.” And throughout neighborhoods, kids went trick-or-treating.

Ante Up for Autism to Raise Funds for TACA

T

he 10th annual Ante Up for Autism is set for Nov. 12 with funds raised at the annual event to benefit Talk About Curing Autism (TACA), which helps families deal with autism.

San Clemente’s Pat and Stephanie McIlvain, who started the event to benefit TACA, said the group looks to help families by providing as many resources as possible for families with autistic loved ones. Events like Ante Up for Autism help achieve that goal.

The McIlvain’s have been a part of the organization for 15 years after their son was diagnosed with autism.

“We were just parents looking for answers,” said Pat, a current TACA board member. “They helped us out a lot; they gave us the right steps.”

Proceeds from the event go to developing programs that connect families and professionals, while expanding the organization’s services.

“We’ve expanded the event; originally, it just started off as a casino night,” Stephanie said. “This is our third year with the gala. People can sit down and have dinner, and then there’s a poker tournament.”

Along with the casino games, there will be a live auction (also available online) and a silent auction. Items up for bid include trips, handbags, jewelry and more.

The couple believes the event is important for the community regardless if

autism affects every person who attends.

“Autism is an epidemic,” Pat said. “It’s the least funded, and it affects one in 68 children. I think it’s something that needs to be addressed now.”

One Orange County family that has been on the receiving end of the organizations’ benefits says that without TACA, they would not be where they are today.

Eric and Jaya Kreidler’s youngest son was diagnosed with autism when he was 23 months old. Since finding out about TACA, they’ve been using resources the organization provides, while meeting other families going through the same things they are.

“One of the biggest things is that autism can be very isolating,” Jaya said. “People don’t understand. Finding TACA proves you’re not alone. There are a lot of parents like you, they understand what you’re going through, and they’re supportive. It’s amazing knowing you’re not alone.”

Jaya said recently they took their son to a Halloween party, and he was sociable and told them he “had the best Halloween ever.”

s the fall sports season comes to an end, we use statistics and numbers to break down standout Dana Hills High School individual and team performances.

5.4 • Running back Jake Baldiviez’s average yards per carry through six games this season. Baldiviez has piled up a team-high 545 rushing yards and has scored three touchdowns.

13.9 • Average yards per catch for senior wide receiver Ryder Lynch. Lynch leads the Dolphins football team in receptions (50), yards (694) and touchdowns (nine).

12 • Number of times the Dana Hills girls volleyball team recorded a straightset victory this season. The Dolphins, who went undefeated in South Coast League play, swept 12 teams en route to finishing the year with a 16-9 overall record.

2 • Total number of sets the Dolphins girls volleyball team lost in eight South Coast League matches. Dana Hills’ two set losses were against El Toro on Oct. 6, but the Dolphins emerged with a five-set

The season was definitely a bounceback effort for the Dolphins. The team had a 9-20 overall record in 2015 and placed third in the South Coast League.

They were moved to the Sea View League in 2016, and they thrived in the new environment. In his inaugural season as the Dolphins’ head coach, Gus Culver guided Dana Hills to the league title.

Dolphins Football Set to Hold Honor the Valor Game Dana Mackensen and the Dana Hills girls tennis team played Valencia/Placentia in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 Championships on Nov. 2.

Los Alamitos (19-16) entered the playoffs via an at-large selection.

The Dolphins (16-9) were able to win the first set, but fell into a 2-1 hole after dropping the second and third. Dana Hills won the fourth to force the fi fth set, and could not overcome the Griffins’ fire-power down the stretch.

Los Alamitos was led by senior Mackenzie Smith’s team-high 13 kills and 25 digs. Nicole Elder chipped in 13 kills and Ryleigh Megill had 12 for Los Alamitos.

Los Alamitos will now face top-seeded Mater Dei in the second round.

The Honor the Valor football game has become a staple on the Dana Hills football program’s schedule for years, and the program will be hosting the fi fth installment of the event yet again on Nov. 4.

Dana Hills, which will be playing Capistrano Valley at 7 p.m., will honor local military veterans and active-duty personnel with a pre-game meal and post-game ceremony. The Dolphins players will be wearing custom-made camouflage jerseys with the names of the veterans and military in attendance, and will present their jerseys to them afterward. Event organizers estimate there will be 65 combat veterans in attendance.

It is a special night in many ways. Not only does the Dolphins program pay respects to those in attendance, the program teams up with several local nonprofits to raise money for veteran organizations.

the Dana Point 5th Marines Regiment Support Group and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9934 of Dana Point.

In its five-year history, the Honor the Valor game has raised $75,000 for local veteran organizations.

Water Polo Places Second in League, Heads to Playoffs

The Dana Hills boys water polo’s 10-6 victory over Aliso Niguel on Nov. 1 capped off a second-place effort in South Coast League play.

The CIF-SS Division 1 Championships are up next for the Dolphins.

Dana Hills (15-12, 5-2 league), which finished runner-up in the CIF-SS Division 2 Championships last year, will await the playoff groupings to find out their firstround opponent. The Dolphins earned an automatic berth into the postseason by placing second in the five-member league.

The Dolphins finished league play on a high note by defeating the Wolverines. Kai Hanson and Jack McLaughlin led the team with three goals apiece.

The Dolphins finished the regular season ranked 10th in the CIF-SS Division 1 coaches poll.

Dana Hills was scheduled to play a final nonleague tune-up game against Agoura, the second-ranked team in Division 2, on Nov. 3 before heading into postseason play.

San Clemente rising star Kade Matson shines at Rip Curl GromSearch National Championships

hen it comes to being crowned a national champion in surfing, there’s more than one avenue to take. There’s the NSSA, the ISA, the WSA, the WSL, and that’s just for starters. A number of surf brands also hold annual national titles for kids, which brings us to the 2016 Rip Curl GromSearch National Championship.

Featuring a bounty of San Clemente’s finest wave-riding talent, the GromSeach National Championships landed last weekend at Seaside Reef in San Diego. Under gray, windless skies, a combination of small northwest and southwest swells intermingled to offer up playful three-foot surf for some of the best and brightest under-16 talent in America to do their thing. It was the culminating event after a series of summer qualifiers around the country, and surf towns from New Smyrna to Santa Cruz to Paia were all represented mightily.

Showing up with every intention of going the distance, 14-year-old Riviera regular Kade Matson went into the GromSearch with something to prove. While he’s had plenty of success in his brief competitive career, a national title has eluded him.

Hoping to improve his chances at Seaside, this summer he battled hard and qualified for both the Under 14 and the Under 16 divisions. A worthy accomplishment, the only drawback was that while most of his competitors only had to focus on one division, he had to buckle down and do double duty all day on Saturday.

In the Under 14 division, Matson made a strong showing in both the opening round and semifinals, blitzing his way all the way into the final. In the Under 16’s, he aced his opening round heat and then slipped through the semifinals in second place.

Landing in both finals, the Under 14 finale came first. It was a back-and-forth affair, but when the horn sounded, Matson found himself a quarter of a point out of first.

Somehow refocused and reenergized, he was not to be denied in the Under 16 final.

articulately surfed 8-point ride. He backed it up with a midrange score and then spent the rest of the final controlling the lineup through his deft use of the priority rules.

When it was all over, Matson had done it. He was the 2016 Rip Curl GromSearch National Champion.

“This is my first national title so I’m super psyched. I usually end of getting second or third, so this feels really good,” beamed Matson from the podium.

When asked how he was able to pull everything together after such a heartbreaking defeat in his first final, Matson smirked and said, “I was in the 14’s final and ended up losing by nothing, so I went out there like I had nothing to lose. I was pretty much just free surfing and it worked out.”

For his effort, Matson took home a $500 check, but more importantly, he picked up an invitation to the Rip Curl International GromSearch final, which will be held at a yet-to-be-named surf break somewhere in the world. Rip Curl will pick up the tab for all of his travel, and considering the company’s tradition of seeking out world-class waves, he’s probably going to score.

“I’m stoked, I don’t know where it’s going to be, but I’m so stoked,” said Matson, as if he was ready to hop on a plane right then and there.

Other San Clemente standouts had a big impact at the GromSearch as well. In keeping with her current momentum on the NSSA circuit, Kirra Pinkerton went to work in the Girls Under 16 division. In a stacked final, she was edged out by reigning national champ Caroline Marks and Hawaii’s Brisa Hennessy, but took a very

respectable third place.

On the boys’ side of the draw, Crosby Colapino joined Matson in the Under 14 final, where he finished third. And in the Under 12 division, Jett Schilling settled for second against Hawaiian hammer thrower Jackson Bunch.

The Rip Curl GromSearch first kicked off in 1999 with the goal of giving young surfers under 16 years old (generally referred to as “groms”), the opportunity to compete and hone their skills against their friends and peers. Today the series has spread around the world and culminates with an international final held at a different location each year. Former GromSearch national champions from San Clemente include Kolohe Andino (who’s currently ranked fifth in the world) and Kei Kobayashi. DP

As much a motivator as he was a competitor, he ended up finishing third in the Boys Under 14 division (he was 14 when he qualified for the GromSearch final). In the closest final of the event, he slipped in less than two points behind runner-up and fellow San Clemente ripper Kade Matson and Hawaii’s Malakai Martinez.

Surfing well above his age group, Colapinto picked up a third place finish earlier in the month in the Under 18 division of the Surfing America Prime contest at San Onofre. Coming off of his national title performance in the Under 16s last summer, he’s currently sitting eighth in the Surfing America West Coast ratings.

To say performance surfing runs deep in the Colapinto family is an understatement.

The family runs a surf camp and private surf school in town, and older brother Griffin, already a national champion, is on track to become one of America’s brightest world tour prospects in the years to come. No doubt Crosby won’t be far behind him. DP
