Annual Memorial Day Ceremony Brings in Large Crowd THE LATEST: More than 1,000 people stood on the lawn in Pines Park on Memorial Day to pay tribute to the men and women who have died while serving the country.

Every year the city of Dana Point and the Dana Point Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9934 hold the ceremony that not only honors those no longer alive, but recognizes the veterans still with us.

This year, veterans from World War II and Korean War were called to the front and received pins while their names were read aloud.

Lt. Col. Jamey M. Federico, executive officer of Marine Aircraft Group 39, was the keynote speaker during the event.

He told the audience that with freedom comes responsibilities and as Americans, people need to appreciate those responsibilities.

“We have a responsibility to make this country a country worth fighting for,” Frederico said.

WHAT’S NEXT: Cmdr., and former mayor, Carlos Olvera, was the master of ceremonies. David Longoria performed “TAPS” on the trumpet and his son Lucas sang “God Bless the U.S.A.” Senior Vice Commander Richard Alonzo, Junior Vice Cmdr. Dana Point Trolley Hop Returns for Third Year THE LATEST: The third annual Dana Point Trolley Hop is scheduled for Friday, June 9 to mark the first day of the city’s free trolley service.

The Dana Point Lantern District Alliance announced there will be 16 local restaurants and bars participating in this year’s event.

From 2:30-6:30 p.m. there will be food and drink specials at participating restaurants, including Bonyard Beach Café, Brio Tuscany Grille, Coffee Importers, Dana Point Times June 2-8, 2017

City Council Discusses Budget during Special Workshop

has been cut, the sponsorship for the Dana Point Grand Prix was reduced to $10,000 for 2018 and cut completely for 2019, and the sponsorship for the Doheny Blues Festival was cut.

Council agreed to have staff to return to them with details including staff time and metrics for each of the community events.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Council could discuss the budget at the June 6 meeting. As of press time, the agenda was not available.

THE LATEST: The City Council discussed and cut items from the proposed budget during a special meeting last week with hopes to keep costs down for the city.

According to the proposed budget, the general fund budget for 2018 is $36.9 million and $37.3 million for 2019. Council is looking to cut some expenditures and avoid a deficit in the future.

During a special meeting, Council members agreed to eliminate the State of City sponsorship for $25,000 from the Council budget, as well as Federal Legislative Advocate for $24,000 from the City Manager’s budget.

In regards to community events, the Council did not discuss which events they would cut, or if there would be any cuts.

Sharks Continue to Hamper Beach Activity in South Orange County THE LATEST: The juvenile great white sharks that have been sighted all over south Orange County shores for about a month are still causing closures at local beaches.

On Monday, May 29, as many people celebrated Memorial Day Weekend, Orange County Lifeguards closed beaches from Capistrano Beach to Poche. The closure was downgraded to an advisory about four hours later.

THE LATEST: Waterman’s Harbor was named the first Surfrider Foundation Ocean Friendly Restaurant in Dana Point.

Surfrider Foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to protecting the ocean, waves and beaches. They started their Ocean Friendly Restaurant program around the country, and recently began it here in South Orange County with Waterman’s.

The program works with and recognizes restaurants who institute self-regulated ocean friendly practices that reduce disposable plastic waste.

The program was created in response to increased pollution in the coastal zone and the ocean gyres, according to Surfrider.

In order for a restaurant to participate in the program, they must follow four criteria: they cannot use expanded Styrofoam, they must have proper recycling practices, they only use reusable tableware and they don’t provide plastic bags for takeout or to-go orders.

Restaurants can also choose a minimum of three other criteria: plastic straws are provided only upon request, no beverages sold in plastic bottles, a discount is offered for customers with a reusable cup, mug, bag, etc., vegetarian and vegan food options are offered on a regular basis, they have water conservation efforts, and there are energy efficient efforts.

If restaurants implement all 10 of the criteria, they’re recognized as a platinum level ocean friendly restaurant.

Waterman’s may be the first in Dana Point, but South OC Chapter Chairman Rick Erkeneff believes more restaurants will participate. “[Waterman’s] is in the Harbor, and they’re setting high standards. They’ve been using the best practices and being sustainable since they opened,” said Rick Erkeneff, South OC Chapter chairman. “We’re excited, it was natural for us to come here.”

An Expansion Unveiled Gloria Dei Church to Dedicate its Sanctuary during Weekend Celebration

W

hen a couple gets married next week in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, they will be the first to have the bells ring signaling the beginning of their marriage.

The bells are just one new addition to the project that Pastor David Mattson is excited about.

“We’ve added parking, we’ve put up retaining walls to set back some of the property, we’ve added an outdoor contemplation garden with an outdoor seating area,” Mattson said. “But the biggest piece is the new sanctuary.”

Facing Stonehill, the new sanctuary is surrounded by glass walls and will feature large stained glass artwork.

“It will be installed June 26 and 27; it will be awesome,” Mattson said. “I think there will be a lot of people seeing the stained

glass window. They’ll be seeing it at night and day; it will be backlit. People won’t have to walk in.”

The stained glass window was approved, along with the other public art pieces, by the Planning Commission in January. Along with the glass and the bells, the church will have a fountain that is made out of a 3.5 ton boulder outside the sanctuary.

The expansion has been a work in progress for five to six years, but the work began two years ago when they officially broke ground.

“When we broke ground, the church soon after turned 50, so the work has been

during the 50th and 51st year, we’re looking at this as an expansion for the next 50 years,” Mattson said.

Mattson said with the growing size of the members in the church, they knew they would need to expand.

“On Sundays, we have about 350 people at the morning services,” Mattson said.

“We’ve outgrown our space. Two of the services are packed; this will give us some elbow room.”

The new sanctuary, which will be where services are held, can hold about 400 people.

“One of the unique things is that the main side can open up to the outside so

we can seat more people if we need to,” Mattson said.

The former sanctuary will be renovated and turned into a community space for events.

He said the design is more modern, but will incorporate traditional elements, including a pipe organ and a concert piano.

“This will not only serve our church community, but we look at this as a concert venue, a place for outside groups, schools,” Mattson said. “A lot of different groups will be able to use the space for different reasons.”

The week before the dedication, Mattson stood at the alter and looked out toward the pews. At the time, they were still covered with plastic and work was still occurring but he said the members of the church were ready for the new space.

“They’ve put up with a lot of mess,” he laughed. “It’s been a community effort. In this area, we have people with tremendous resources, but we also have people with very little. Every one, in some way, gave their time or their money, and has been a part of this project.”

To celebrate the new space, the church will have a weekend full of activities.

On Saturday, June 3, there will be a Bach Festival with a concert at 6 p.m.

Guests will be able to hear music from the new organ and piano.

On Sunday, the sanctuary will be dedicated at 9:45 a.m. There will be two other services at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. DP

Local Students Receive Scholarships from National Charity League Chapter Six local students recently received scholarships from the Capistrano Coast National Charity League chapter.

The six students demonstrated leadership, academic excellence and a commitment to community service throughout high school, according to a statement by the chapter.

The recipients include Ava Kargosha and Kolby Makuuchi from Capistrano Valley High School, Gabriella MacAdam and Samantha Eden from San Juan Hills High School, Brooke Frohlich and Emily Glasser from San Clemente High School.

Each applicant was asked to submit an essay to show how their community service experience was meaningful to them and how it made a difference to their community.

The Fountains at Sea Bluff Honor Local Veterans To celebrate Armed Forces Day, The Fountains at Sea Bluffs honored 25 veterans during an Armed Forces Tribute Breakfast on May 20.

The Fountains gave each of the 19 resident veterans and their veteran guests a framed certificate of appreciation.

The VFW also handed out a 50-year coin to Vietnam veterans.

The residents who were honored served during World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam. They served in the Navy, Air Force and the Army.

Dana Hills High School Reflection Winners Announced Dana Hills High School students made a splash during the National Reflections Art Contest this year.

Three of five students who advanced to the Capistrano Unified School District’s competition won awards.

Maddy Vance (music) and Kelsey Ash (dance) both received Awards for Excellence in their categories. They both advanced to the fourth district level of competition and were recognized. Kelsey went on to the dance choreography at the state level.

Rebecca Cadena (photography) received the Award of Merit.

Other Dana Hills High School Awards of Excellence winners included Natalie Craig (literature) and Christopher French (visual art).

The theme for 2017-2018 will be “Within Reach.” The deadline will be Monday, Oct. 9.

IN RESPONSE TO DANA POINT FOREIGN CAR SERVICE AND THE CITY OF DANA POINT LARRY A. VETTER, Dana Point

I have been a resident of Dana Point since 1972 and have been an ardent supporter of many things associated with Dana Point since it was part of Orange County before city incorporation. I have never had the inclination to write to the Dana Point Times until now. The reason that I am writing at this juncture is in response to articles that the Times’ have published regarding the legal debacle between the city of Dana Point and Dana Point Foreign Car Service. I am cognizant of Dana Point Foreign Car Service since the business was purchased by the current owner Tom Volkmann. Thus, I have a unique and historical lens to bring a few thoughts to ponder in the situation that you have so aptly reported regarding the legal maneuvers undertaken by the city of Dana Point.

Dana Point Foreign Car Service is an entrenched business that has served

the citizenry of Dana Point and other surrounding communities. Volkmann’s business has diligently fulfilled their mission of car maintenance with great care and consideration for their clients and the community at large. I speak with authority on that aspect since I have employed their services since the 1970s. Furthermore, many customers have supported neighbors of the car service by developing a relationship that was initially established through interactions with Dana Point Foreign Car Service. Hence, many people have fostered business relationships with surrounding stores that offer various products such as electronics, hardware, surf gear, food, glass, mirrors and other such offerings. Subsequently, it is apparent that Dana Point Foreign Car Service has pumped a vast amount of money into the community and fostered a fertile climate of business cooperation with other businesses in proximity of their shop. Additionally, the Car Service is a true mom and pop shop that is part of the fabric of the nature of Dana Point.

Subsequently, I cannot fathom why the city of Dana Point does not comprehend the critical nature of qualitative business practices exhibited by the car service.

Also, as a voting citizen, I question the expense regarding the misuse of public funds as the city has pursued legal actions against Dana Point Foreign Car Service.

The FAA Needs to Hear us above the Plane Noise

I

f you have noticed more planes flying directly over your home, you are not alone.

There have been recent changes made to flight paths over South Orange County by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Earlier this year, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)—the entity with exclusive authority over the nation’s navigable airspace—implemented changes to the flight paths for planes flying to and from John Wayne Airport. The changes altered historical flight paths directly through South Orange County. And as a result, many residents have started to complain about increased airplane noise.

Because of the increasing number of complaints, I recently hosted a public forum to provide the community with background information about the process that led the FAA to change the flight paths and provide an avenue for our community to voice our concerns.

For background, in 2003 Congress called for the development of the Next Generation Air Transportation System, or NextGen to

improve aviation safety and efficiency. The cornerstone of NextGen is the transition from a ground-based air traffic control system to one that is satellite-based. This transition causes many flight paths, particularly those involving take-offs, to be more concentrated.

These changes were sought to improve the efficiency and safety of air traffic in the region, certainly an objective with good merit. However, in doing so the FAA has completely ignored the impact to the quality of life for those in the altered flight paths in South Orange County.

In an effort to find some measure of relief from the noise caused by the FAA changes, my colleagues and I on the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to challenge the FAA’s ‘Finding of No Significant Impact’ and their ‘Record of Decision.’ Additionally, I went to Washington D.C. to personally meet with Orange County’s congressional delegation and officials from the FAA to voice the concerns from constituents regarding

At the Movies: ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales,’ Again

ourteen years ago, Disney released one of their biggest, and surprisingly impressive, actionadventure blockbusters with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The film penned many things, including one of the most amusing scene-stealers of all time, Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). Since then, we’ve gotten a handful of sequels with incoherent scripts and tired comic relief, and the main focus going from the original two

leads Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), to Depp completely.

Disney’s fifth installment of the Pirates franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales, is the weakest effort yet. Back in the Caribbean, Jack (Depp) is caught up in another epic journey, this time with Will’s and Elizabeth’s son, Henry (Brenton Thwaites).

Henry convinces Jack to help him break his father’s trapped curse. With the aid of a young, astronomy-savvy woman named Carina (Kaya Scodelario), the trio runs into

some trouble at sea with two of Jack’s old nemeses Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem).

Dead Men features all the usual problems in redundant sequels—too many awkward, meta callbacks to the previous, better film; an incoherent narrative with plot holes; and the fan-favorite character is now a shadow of what he used to be.

Bardem, Rush, Bloom and Knightley are completely wasted with pointless screen time, while Thwaites and Scodelario are

They are also called sea slugs. They got the name hares because they have “tentacles” that look like the ears of a rabbit.

Graves: Are they the prey of any animal?

Steers: Crabs and lobsters eat them.

Not-to-mention, when sea hares die, a variety of scavengers will feast on their remains.

Graves: In your personal observation, how is the sea hare population doing this year?

Steers: We’ve been seeing a plethora of them, significantly more than previous years. This is due to cooler water temperatures during the winter, which leads to a greater growth of algae, their food supply.

Graves: What are some of the unique characteristics of sea hares?

Steers: They are hermaphrodites, meaning they have both male and female reproductive organs. When threatened or stressed they can exude ink, similar to the way an octopus does. It is their way of fending off a predator. And, they are a valuable laboratory animal. Medical researchers use them in the studies of neurobiology of learning and memory.

These animals have some of the largest neurons in the animal kingdom. Dana Point Residents Honored during Founder’s Day Event

uring the Dana Point Historical Society’s Founder’s Day event, Dana Point residents were honored for their contributions to Dana Point History.

Founders Day was created to recognize individuals who have made a significant contribution to the history of Dana Point, according to the Society.

This year’s event brought more than 70 people to the Dana Point Community House for dinner and the awards.

Carlos and Georgelean Olvera were awarded the Dana Point Historical Society 2017 Founders Honorees.

“Georgelean and Carlos Olvera have made significant contributions to the community over their decades in Dana Point,” said Barbara Johannes, president of the Dana Point Historical Society.

Carlos has served on the Dana Point City Council, the Planning Commission and was the mayor. He’s served as the Dana Point Historical Society’s president for nine years and has contributed to historical research, society finances and historic outreach activities. He previously wrote “it’s History” for the Dana Point Times and has served as an Orange County Historical Commissioner.

Georgelean has worked with the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce as the executive director, through boards, commissions and nonprofit organizations. She’s volunteered for the home tour committee, scholarship fundraisers and hosted the community reading of Two Years Before the Mast.

“If it were not for people like Carlos and Georgelean Olvera who have kept our history alive and worked to preserve it, we would not have a history to share,” Johannes said.

The Historical Society also honored Helen Pierce, the matriarch of Dana Point, for her 70 years as a “participant in Dana

Helen moved to Dana Point after she married Mel Pierce. She was on the opening staff of R.H. Dana Elementary where she designed the kindergarten area consisting of two classrooms and an activity area.

Today, she continues to attend Historical Society events and volunteers.

She and Mel raised their family here, and he was a founding member of the Doheny Volunteer Fire Department.

They were named Founders Day honorees in 2007.

“If it were not for people like Helen and Mel Pierce we wouldn’t have a community of first person witness to Dana Point’s history, since 1930—Mel—and 1947— Helen—respectively,” Johannes said. “The Pierces lived, worked, volunteered and raised their family here in Dana Point.

Helen and Mel’s lives are a Dana Point ‘Hallmark story.’”

Despite tallying 11 hits the Dana Hills softball team could not overcome an early deficit in a 6-4 CIF-SS Division 2 semifinal loss to visiting Riverside Poly on May 30.

Riverside Poly, which snapped the Dolphins’ 12-game winning streak, will play Camarillo for the CIF-SS title on June 3.

The early innings of the semifinal tilt were stacked with opportunities for both teams, but the Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third when Niki Calderon and Kayla Trayor collected back-to-back RBI singles.

Riverside Poly saw a six-run lead shrink to three after Cameron Cecil, Tori Sickmeier and Jessie Nagel plated three runs with RBI hits. Cecil brought home another runner in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 6-4.

But Peterson proved to be in control, and did not allow another run to cross the plate in a complete game effort. Peterson struck out three and walked just one batter.

Dolphins’ starter Kate Donaldson exited the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the third. Serafine Parrish came on to pitch five innings of relief.

Zoch, who had a tremendous postseason at the plate, went 3 for 4 with a triple. Cecil and Nagel both went 2 for 3.

for Dana Hills (19-3). The Dolphins went undefeated to capture the Sea View League title. The team’s 19 wins ties the most for a Dolphins team since the 2014 season, and the most since at least 2005.

Dana Hills defeated Laguna Hills, Rio Mesa and Charter Oak, respectively, to reach the semifinals.

Dolphins Relay Team Advances to State

The record-setting Dana Hills girls 4x400-meter relay team continued its strong postseason by placing second at the CIF-SS Masters Meet at Arcadia High School on May 26.

The relay team, which set an all-time county record at the CIF-SS Championships, finished second by posting a time of 3:47.01 at the Masters Meet. The relay squad will travel to Clovis to compete in the CIF State Track & Field Championships June 2-3.

The 4x400-meter relay team consists of Ximena Bustos, Hailey Ray, Anisa Rind and Jennifer Daly.

Several other Dolphin athletes competed at the Masters Meet and finished their seasons strong.

Jack Landgraf, the CIF-SS 3,200-meter champion, placed fourth in the event at the Masters Meet with a time of 9:19.51. Brandon Hough placed seventh (9:20.11).

Thomas Wilfert finished ninth (4:17.20) in the 1,600-meter run.

egistration for the City of Dana Point’s adult sports leagues is now open.

The recreation league’s popular summer offerings include co-ed kickball and co-ed slow-pitch softball. Both leagues are set to run from July 10 to August 30.

Registration for both leagues is open until June 23, or when the leagues fill up.

The kickball league has two divisions, one for beginners and one for experienced teams. Cost to participate is $200 per team, or $25 per person for individuals looking to join a team. Both kickball leagues have Monday and Wednesday divisions.

The co-ed slow-pitch softball league also has divisions on Monday and Wednesday.

Cost to join is $350 per team.

Registration costs do not cover weekly umpire fees.

s water temperatures dropped over the last week, the Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching boats have seen a mixed bag of fish being pulled up from a variety of depths.

In his weekly report, Capt. Brian Wooley described how, on the surface, calico bass have been plentiful. Out in the deeper waters, and near San Clemente Island, rockfish, sheephead and the occasional yellowtail have been caught.

business of selling “the dream,” and he provided Brewer and company with reason to dream.

“As long as I had enough money to make the next issue and pay the little staff I had, I was pretty stoked,” said Severson in a 2014 interview with The New York Times.

Largely because of Severson, it became possible to eke out a living photographing or writing about surfing. That had never happened before. Brands like Hobie and surfers like Phil Edwards filled up the pages, creating the foundation for the surf industry and celebrity culture we see today.

It was never disclosed how much Severson sold SURFER for, but it was enough to set him up to quietly live a surfer’s life on Maui. Continuing to create throughout his years, he was a talented painter, especially adept at watercolor work. Through it all, he never lost sight of who he was or what it meant to be a surfer. He reckoned the Beach Boys a bunch of clowns, calling their use of surfing a “shameless appropriation.”

He remained a purist. In the outpouring of condolences after his passing, universally the former SURFER editors have made note of his enduring humility and graciousness.

At the end of it all, perhaps it is the words Severson wrote in that very first issue of SURFER that are most enduring and best encapsulate who the man was and the dream he aspired to share with the world: “In this crowded world, the surfer can still seek and find the perfect day, the perfect wave, and be alone with the surf and his thoughts.” DP

Founder of SURFER Magazine leaves a legend in his wake

n 1969, John Severson, the founder of SURFER Magazine, was quietly living in Cypress Shore minding his own business when he got a new neighbor— President Richard Nixon. The two were immediately at odds. Severson stood at the helm of one of the counter-culture’s favorite publications and was staunchly opposed to the Marine crackdown on Camp Pendleton prohibiting surfers from using the beach at Cotton’s Point and Trestles. Meanwhile, Nixon was, well, he was Nixon.

One day Severson snapped some photos of the president at the beach and sold them to LIFE Magazine. Nixon was not stoked.

The leader of the free world ordered a six-foot wall to be built around his property while the Secret Service quickly took a convenient interest in what Severson was up to.

“I’d like very much to speak with you for a few minutes regarding the surfing, public beach and access problems that face us in Southern California,” wrote Severson in a 1969 letter to Nixon (currently housed at the Nixon library in Yorba Linda). “Unfortunately, your summer home has intensified the problem, but I believe a solution can be reached without jeopardizing your security.”

Severson ended up meeting with White House Counselor John Ehrlichman to plead his case.

“He was one tough cookie,” wrote Severson in his 2014 memoir, Surf. “I toughcookied him right back.”

Severson’s efforts didn’t change things overnight, but eventually the military relented, realizing the futility in trying to keep surfers away from perfect waves. A media maven before that was a thing, Severson continued to antagonize Nixon, filming anti-

war protests outside of the Western White House and using them in his psychedelic surfing opus, Pacific Vibrations. But by 1971 it all became too much for him to contend with. He sold SURFER Magazine and his San Clemente home and split for Maui.

John Severson passed away at his home outside of Lahina on May 26, 2017. He was 83 years old. His wife, Louis, has noted he had been battling leukemia.

Remembered as the founder of SURFER Magazine, in 1960 he launched the publication out of a small Dana Point office as a means of promoting a surf film he was releasing. The demand for the publication was immediate. He was the first to blend photography, writing and art into an accurate, authentic portrayal of the nascent surf culture. Hiring talent such as photographers Ron Stoner and Art Brewer and

writers Drew Kampion and Steve Pezman, he provided a platform for the sport to springboard.

“I was getting more of my photos run, and one day he called me and asked if I wanted to be a staff photographer,” Brewer said. “It paid $500 a month and I thought I’d made it big time. I went out and bought a new car.”

Thanks to Severson, Brewer and his fellow surf photographers had an outlet for their work. As the publisher of the world’s first surf magazine, Severson was in the

Her motto should tell you all you need to know about her: “There is no such thing as bad surf.”

A few weeks ago, globetrotting pro and local icon Dane Gudauskas logged some water time with “Mia Mouse” and came away more stoked than ever, which if you know Dane is no easy feat.

“The stoke levels was contagious! The hoots were flyin’ and the girls were ripping the waves all the way to the beach. You rock, Mia. Thank you for the inspiration,” Dane said.
