Dana Hills Teacher Reflects on Being Named OC Teacher of the Year THE LATEST: During her forensics class on Tuesday, Kristine Clarke smiled as three of her students talked her through a scenario in their crime scene lab at Dana Hills High School.

Clarke has been teaching at Dana Hills for 12 years, and has been with Capistrano Unified School District the same amount of time. Currently, she teaches 10th through 12th graders in biotechnology, forensics and chemistry.

This past spring, Clarke was named Capistrano Unified School District’s High School Teacher of the Year, and then was named one of five Orange County Teachers of the Year. She celebrated the honor with a dinner at Disneyland resort with hundreds of other educators from around the county.

“It’s all been such an honor every single step of the way,” Clarke said. “I don’t know how else to say it.”

Clarke said she was surprised when she was named CUSD’s High School Teacher of the Year, and again when she was named one of the county’s Teacher’s of the Year.

“I was blown away,” Clarke said as she laughed. “I don’t like being the center of attention.”

Clarke was surprised with the CUSD award in front of her students during one of her classes. Then for the county award, she was asked to go to the Mall—an area in the high school—and was surprised with her award in front of students, staff and her parents.

“I was blown away by everything,” Clarke said.

WHAT’S NEXT: Clarke said she’s thankful for Principal Jason Allemann, the science department staff and other faculty for their constant support over the years.

Doheny Village Meeting to Continue Discussion THE LATEST: Members of the community are invited to participate in the next Doheny Village meeting on Thursday, Nov. 17.

Opticos Design was hired last year to help residents refine the vision for the area. Over the course of five days, Opticos staff held a design charrette where residents, city officials and Opticos staff discussed ideas of what they wanted to see in the village.

During a September meeting, Dan Parolek, principal of Opticos, showed the public a concept for the area, which pinpointed four district environments, each with its own zoning code.

Cindy Nelson, consultant/project manager, said the meeting will be a continuation from the September meeting when Opticos talked about the form-based code

THE LATEST: Dana Point City Council voted against allowing the California Statewide Communities Development Authority (CSCDA) Open Pace Program to operate in the city.

The program allows the financing or refinancing of renewable energy, energy efficiency, water efficiency and seismic strengthening improvements, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and other improvements through a program homeowners could opt in to via paying a special tax.

During the Nov. 1 meeting, the Council voted four to one against allowing the CSCDA to accept applications from property owners, conduct contractual assessment proceedings and levy contractual assessments within Dana Point.

The item was before the Council at its Oct. 18 meeting, but was tabled so the Council members could take a look at some correspondence that came in close to the meeting time.

WHAT’S NEXT: Councilman Joe Muller said he was not in favor of the program because it sounded like a “predatory loan” and would not be a good thing for the community.—KP

Local Artists to Hold Exhibit at Dana Point Yacht Club THE LATEST: A local artist and a retired U.S. Army Special Forces colonel will be showing their art during a painting and sculpture exhibit at the Dana Point Yacht Club.

Randall Zorn, an artist who owns a studio and business in Capistrano Beach, will be partnering with Gary Cassidy, a retired colonel. The two have known each other since attending Claremont Graduate University in the ’80s.

Zorn said he reached out to Cassidy about the exhibit. “[Cassidy] came to the last show I had and then we talked about it, and it evolved

from there,” Zorn said.

Zorn’s passion for nature and surfing is incorporated into his plein air water color and oil paintings. Zorn also has drawings and paintings of live models and still life.

Cassidy has had images in the “Bosnia Art Project,” which is a part of the Army’s permanent art collection, paintings in the Capitol building and a sculpture in the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum in Chicago.

Zorn said he’s never had an exhibit at the Yacht Club before, but he’s excited for it.

“I think it will be really great,” Zorn said. “I just think it will be a good thing for this area, and it’s kind of changing around here. People are getting more interested in art and sculptures, and what’s going on in the area and the community.”

He added even though the community is known for its water-based activities, it’s still a community that can make good art.

Turkey Trot Volunteers Prepare for Upcoming Event THE LATEST: As the annual Turkey Trot approaches, Dana Point residents are gearing up to continue their tradition of volunteering at the Thanksgiving event.

Dave Duree, with Preferred Solutions in Dana Point, has been volunteering since at least 2000.

“It’s probably been before that,” Duree said. “I don’t remember what year I started.”

Every year Duree can be found at the registration table the day of the event and the night before.

“I work registration, and it’s the only thing I’ve done,” Duree said.

He said he enjoys the responsibility of the task.

“When I first started, there was a lot more cash being handled, and it just has a good sense of responsibility,” Duree said.

He said he really enjoys seeing the energy from the runners and the vibe everyone brings to the event.

“I see the same people running every year. There’s the families that bring their young kids. There’s the kids that would come that now have their own families,” Duree said. “It’s being a part of the community, and being able to witness all of that.”

Wyatt, Lewis Win Dana Point City Council Seats Wednesday.

Lewis agreed and said there was a lot of hugging and cheering going on when the numbers were first released.

“It felt really, really good,” Lewis said.

“I thought, ‘this is going to go the way we want it to.’”

Lewis and Wyatt agreed to run for the two open seats together. Lewis said it was a condition for her to run for one of the seats.

“I wanted to run with Paul as a team,” Lewis said. “We met and discussed it, and we both agreed this was the best approach.”

She said she heard of some people expressing concerns over the two running together, but she believed it was the right thing to do.

Wyatt said he’s excited to begin the journey as a Council member.

“It’s a little bit intimidating, but I think

I’m up for the challenge,” Wyatt said.

Both say they spoke with a lot of Dana Point residents about what they want to see in the city and what some of their biggest concerns are.

“When we were knocking on doors, we heard a lot of ‘Have you tried to work with the city? They make it unpleasant to work with.’ This is the kind of culture we really want to change,” Lewis said.

Wyatt said he’s excited to turn the attitude around.

“I’m most excited about really trying to rebuild the city’s attitude toward its residents,” Wyatt said. “I get the feeling that the residents feel that they are a bother to the city. We have to turn that around.”

Lewis and Wyatt have worked together in the past on Measure H, the citizen-led “2015 Town Center Initiative,” which passed during the primary election in June.

Other candidates commented to Dana Point Times on the outcome of the election. Nadia Khalil said she loved the experience and the knowledge she learned from the election.

Michelle Brough said she was proud of the “positive campaign” she ran.

“I wish Paul Wyatt and Debra Lewis the best of luck,” Brough said. “I hope that they work at putting aside their anger in order to narrow the schism that has developed in our beautiful city.”

Penny Maynard said she hopes the divisiveness from the June primary will be put behind everyone.

“I hope that the Council will work together to better the quality of our community and the economy,” Maynard said.

The Registrar of Voters will need to certify the votes before City Clerk Kathy Ward can certify the election results. Certification may not occur until December. DP

n Nov. 9, Debra Lewis and Paul Wyatt smiled as they stood in front of City Hall. Just hours earlier, on Election night, their names had received the most votes from Dana Point residents for two open seats on Dana Point City Council.

Lewis had received 5,812 votes and Wyatt had received 5,653 votes, according to unofficial results as of press time on Nov. 10.

On Election Day, more than 18,000 Dana Point residents hit the polls and cast their votes for two new Dana Point City Council members. The numbers began to roll in shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday, but there was a lull in the reporting until about midnight Wednesday.

“When the first numbers were released, and we saw there was a slight jump, I was able to relax a little,” Wyatt said on

City Votes in New Arts and Culture Commissioner Anthony Small was voted onto the Arts and Culture Commission by City Council during the Nov. 1 meeting.

Small is the lead singer of Small World, who has performed during the Dana Point summer concert series, Festival of Whales, Lantern District car shows and more.

Small has lived in Dana Point for 19 years, has worked with Dana Hills High School for their Reflections art contest and has volunteered for many organizations in the city.

In April, Judith Nowland submitted her resignation from the Commission. In May, the Council directed staff to proceed with a 30-day recruitment to fill the vacancy.

Five residents submitted their applications for the position.

A private debut event for Millie’s Butterflies by Dana Point author Dori Scarano is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13.

The novel is based on a true story that Scarano has been working on since her mother’s death in 2004.

People have clamored in the past to purchase these homes. Kids were safe to play on the cul-de-sac, neighborhood get-togethers were common, and the neighborhood was reminiscent of the old days.

Within the last two years, the street that is adjacent to the community—separated by a wall and gates, which dead ends about a quarter mile down, near the beach trail—has been a haven for homeless people, drug users, gang-bangers fighting with knives, people having sex, people using the greenbelt for a toilet, and the list goes on and on. Weekend car races are also common on the street.

Each weekend, deputies are called out to quell all the disturbances and are met with smart-mouthed teens driving recklessly, or gang-bangers refusing to talk.

Both sides of this dead end street have become a parking lot for people living a half mile away. Transients abound, and people engage in lewd activities while Dana Point Times November 11-17, 2016

place to turn. I contend that every sector of the investment industry operates to maximize its profit at the expense of the investor. The most sought-after arena of public involvement, the mutual fund industry, operates primarily as a device to systematically skim a portion of a fund’s assets, irrespective of performance. The vast majority, now numbering more than 15,000, operate with relative indifference to investor return. They are mostly an exercise in pure marketing.

At an earlier time, your bank’s FDIC money market accounts produced fair revenue. Today it’s tough to get one-half percent annually—though most banks aren’t ashamed to charge you over 20 percent on credit card cash advances. A bank’s only value is as a place to park funds while awaiting a better use for the money.

As a last resort, many persons turn to a financial advisor. The competent advisors are rarely available to persons with investment assets less than several million dollars. The rest—the vast majority—are

druggies ingest or shoot up. Condoms are everywhere, needles are everywhere, and even the occasional (used) toilet paper shows up.

I am angry because my grandchildren live in a home adjacent to this pandemonium, and I fear for their safety. They have all been raised in this family home, and now they must move because no one will do anything about this situation.

This scourge on our community must be stopped. There is no reason why a simple chain cannot be installed across this street, giving fire, etc., a key to the chain in emergencies. No one else needs access to this dead end road.

Our beautiful San Juan Capistrano is losing the battle against gang-bangers, druggies, itinerant homeless and out-of-control teens. Soon we could be another East L.A., unless action is taken now, to take back our community.

I have lived in San Juan Capistrano for over 25 years and have seen the change. I am glad my grandchildren will no longer be subjected to these intolerable activities but am saddened that we have essentially given this area to the bad people, while my family is forced to move.

My daughter lives within walking distance of this wonderful park. I have three grandchildren that I take to the park whenever I can. The park has been

My issue is with the people that use the park. There are age limits on the playground equipment for a reason. I have seen parents jumping and hanging on the new equipment. There was one parent that actually laughed as her teenage son and his friends tried to damage these items. What is wrong with these people?

I love dogs, but it is so repulsive to have to clean dog feces off the kids’ shoes because of the inconsiderate people that do not clean up after their dogs. I know there is a fine for not doing this.

Also, why can’t people pick up after themselves? They leave garbage all over.

There are little ones using these play areas.

They put everything in their mouth. I have found so many bottle caps and such in the wood chips. People, pick up your own garbage. I feel like taking pictures of these offenders and putting them on a website.

This park is wonderful. Why ruin it?

he newest addition to the Marvel cinematic universe, Doctor Strange, is as peculiar as the main character’s name. It’s fresh and different from the usual superhero movie, but at the same time it’s not entirely good. The tone and atmosphere is reminiscent of The Matrix (1999) or Inception (2010), which works to the film’s advantage, but the filmmakers have to work with the fact that the lead is still a superhero in a lighthearted franchise.

Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is the most talented and successful neurosurgeon in New York City, much to the chagrin of his former flame, nurse Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) and fellow surgeon Nicodemus West (Michael Stuhlbarg).

But suddenly he becomes victim to a near-fatal car crash that leaves him with permanent nerve damage in his hands. Out of work and desperate, Strange travels to Kathmandu, Nepal, to seek help from a mystical sorcerer called the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), who shows him how to become magical himself.

Doctor Strange is as much of a visual spectacle as many critics are saying, especially the supernatural sequences, and it is interesting to see an action lead become a magical hero rather than just super strong. But unfortunately, the film is inconsistent with its tone and has much more comic relief than is needed. Some scenes are very dramatic, while others are purely comedic. There is an amusing magic cape similar to Aladdin’s carpet, but the creators should have focused more on the characters’ chemistry and less on laughs. DP www.danapointtimes.com

ho is therapeutic. There may not be science yet to verify that, but anyone who’s eaten the classic Vietnamese noodle soup, especially after a long night or while battling a cold, knows that its combination of warmth, umami, salt and spice has magical healing powers.

There’s a pho for everyone at San Clemente’s Pho Thanh Binh. I went with the house special of rare beef, brisket, tendon and tripe—a traditional take on the noodle soup.

The best part about pho is the way the flavor integrates as you eat it. Throw in your basil, jalapeno, hoisin and chili—getting it spicy is another good cold remedy—and by the time you’re halfway through the gigantic serving bowl, the add-ins marry the peppery beef and unctuous tendon and tripe to create a singular indulgent bite. And though not everyone is an offal fan, Pho Thanh Binh’s tripe is tender and savory, and the tendon is rich and melts on the tongue.

Dana’s Shipmates, Revisited

I

n a previous column, I shared the history of a fellow shipmate of R.H. Dana’s, Henry Mellus, who left the Pilgrim in California and later became the mayor of Los Angeles. In all, there were 15 crewmen on board the Pilgrim. Two died and one deserted.

On the return voyage, three were transferred to the Alert. Here’s the story of two of those men.

In Chapter 33 of Two Years before the Mast, Dana wrote “I went to the wheel with a young fellow from the Kennebec, Jack Stewart, who was a good helmsman, and for two hours, we had our hands full.”

From the Los Angeles Herald, February 4, 1892, comes this: “Old Jack Stewart who had lived in San Diego 60 years, died last night at his home in Old Town, aged 91 years. Jack Stewart was a historical character, as he was one of the shipmates of Richard Henry Dana, whose Two Years before the Mast has become a classic. Stewart came here with Dana in 1832 (sic) as pilot of the Alert and never left Old Town except on whaling ships. He married a Spanish woman and leaves six or seven children.” R. H. Dana’s son visited with Jack in 1881 and referred to him as “quite a character.”

captain of the vessel had over the crew that prompted Dana in this direction. His criticism of the crew’s labors was tyrannical. Thompson was not considered a good navigator, and his sailors knew it. When Dana III went back over his father’s journey in 1880 (see Chapter 38, Seventy Six Years After in Two Years before the Mast), he met Thompson’s nephew, who was the proprietor of a hotel in Santa Barbara. As the two went for a stroll, the nephew carried a heavy walking stick with him. Dana III wrote, “Could it be he was to wreak vengeance on the son of the man who had exposed his uncle?” But instead the nephew related a family story about how his uncle had tried to take some land belonging to his brothers where he was put in charge. The story ended that the nephew thought that Richard Henry Dana, Jr., had given his uncle perfect justice. Dana’s son

he Dana Hills High School baseball team is holding their annual Christmas tree fundraiser to not only raise funds for the team, but to bring some holiday cheer to families who may not be able to afford a tree.

For the last 12 years, the Dolphins and baseball coach Tim Faris have been selling Christmas trees to raise money for the team. Part of the fundraiser includes bringing trees that have been donated to families and military personnel at Camp Pendleton.

At first, the event did not include tree donations, but donations were added in when Faris learned of local families that weren’t able to purchase a tree for themselves.

“It started out as just getting trees for the general public,” Faris said. “Then we started thinking about getting them to families that could use some help.”

Faris said the boys usually have around 100 trees that are purchased for donation and 500 trees purchased in total.

“I would like to see this thing get bigger,” Faris said. “We did see an increase in trees donated to the Marines. Last year was a big event for them.”

Faris also believes it’s important for the event to be family-oriented.

“We try to make it as much of a family lot as possible; my kids and family have done it every year,” Faris said. “We have the teams’ families out there. There’s music and food every year.”

Michelle Balconi said her son is on the team, and she’s excited to participate in the event this year.

“We have two children. We’ve gone through little league, dance, volleyball, all kinds of fundraisers, but this is the first one you can support the team but also make a donation to a needy family,” Balconi said. “[The team] is providing a nice service.”

The fundraiser will continue until Nov. 19, and then the team will load up cars with the purchased trees and donate the others to families on Dec. 3.

“We know our trees are more expensive, but we’re trying to have a fundraiser, and the money goes to a good cause,” Faris said. “It’s going to go to the baseball team; it provides uniforms, equipment and more.” DP

Playing for Honor

watch the Dolphins take on Capistrano Valley in the final game of the regular season. Although the Dolphins lost, 64-19, the game was all about appreciating what the veterans had done. Prior to the game, the players sat down for dinner with their assigned veterans to not only share a meal, but to share experiences.

In its first four years, the Honor the Valor game has raised over $75,000 for veteran organizations. Proceeds raised at this year’s event went toward the Dana Point 5th Marines Regiment Support Group and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9934 of Dana Point.

“I wish more schools would adopt this tradition. It’s important to show our thanks to veterans year-round, not just on Veterans Day,” Skinner said. DP

Dana Hills High School football program holds annual military appreciation game

here is a certain honor and respect that comes with playing for a name other than your own.

Senior guard for the Dana Hills High School football team, Christion Pouchie, and the rest of his teammates were asked to do that very thing in the fifth annual Honor the Valor military appreciation football game on Nov. 4.

Each of the Dana Hills players were assigned to a local combat veteran, and took the field against Capistrano Valley wearing their veteran’s name—instead of their own—emblazoned on their back as a show of respect.

In Pouchie’s case, the name he wore on his back that night hit a little closer to home.

“My grandfather, Hector Clark, is the Marine I was assigned, and I was excited to play for him because not only do I respect him, but this would be the first game he has watched me play,” Pouchie said.

Pouchie got the rare honor of representing his grandfather on the gridiron, and 64 other combat veterans were given a

similar honor. Following the game, the Dolphins players lined the field to present the veterans in attendance with their game-worn jerseys. A color guard and active-duty military personnel were on hand for pre-game ceremonies.

Pouchie’s commitment to honoring his grandfather and his country will continue even after the final whistle sounded.

Earlier this year, Pouchie enlisted into the United States Marines Corps.

The entire Dolphins program was impacted by the Honor the Valor event, especially senior wide receiver and captain Ryder Lynch.

“We could never pay these men back for the sacrifices they made. This is only a small way that allowed us to show how

thankful we are,” Lynch said. “I’m thankful for their services and their ability to put their lives on the line for people they’ve never met.”

The Honor the Valor game takes months of planning between the Dolphins’ staff and boosters and local veteran organizations. Dana Hills head coach Phil Skinner encouraged each of his players to write a letter to their particular veteran before the game in order to build a relationship.

“They wrote to the veterans about what freedom meant to them,” Skinner said. “I wanted them to explain what the sacrifices these men made enabled them to do.”

Dana Hills Hosts CUSD Special Olympics Event DANA POINT TIMES

ver 200 students from across the Capistrano Unified School District were given Olympic-style treatment at Dana Hills High School on Nov. 7 as part of the district’s fall Special Olympics event.

The special needs students, who came from San Clemente High School, Dana Hills, Tesoro and several local middle schools, had a fun-filled day learning basketball and soccer skills.

An estimated 268 Dana Hills student volunteers were on hand to assist the student-athletes and help organize games and activities. The event was organized by the Dana Hills Associated Student Union and the Best Buddies Program. There were also dozens of teachers, staff and parent volunteers on hand.

The day kicked off in the gymnasium, where students were given a reception worthy of the Opening Ceremonies. Music blared and there were plenty of high-fives to go around.

Among the highlights of the day were free-flowing basketball games inside the gym. Students and parents sat in the stands and cheered every made basket and thoughtful pass. The student-athletes also got to play pick-up soccer games on the field at Dolphins Stadium. Dana Hills cheerleaders were there to guide some students and teach them popular cheers heard at football games.

The event has become a staple on campus at Dana Hills, and organizers are already in the process of planning the upcoming 2017 spring Special Olympics track and field games. DP

all is my favorite time to be a surfer in California.” It’s a common sentiment uttered by those that live and ride waves on the West Coast. Lately it’s been especially true thanks to a consistent run of west and southwest swells that have lit up the beaches from Salt Creek to San Onofre.

The weather’s been pristine too, with 75-degree beach temps and hardly even the slightest sea breeze. As of press time, the swell was temporarily subsiding before the next round of waves hits this week, so we hit the street to figure out where folks have been scoring and why this is the best time of year to be a surfer in California.

On Friday my oldest son, Cannon, went down to Mexico to surf while my youngest son, Carson, and I went to the local beach break to surf. We pulled up and people were amping, telling us the waves were firing. The tide felt really high, it looked like it was flat, and then all of a sudden the long period swell started to show. The bigger sets were six feet on face. Carson’s best wave was a front-side tube ride that ended up closing out, but his expression and the look on his face when he came up for a breath told the whole story. School at Concordia Elementary starts at 8 a.m., so after that, we got out and headed to class. With the wind remaining light all day, I thought it was a perfect time for Trestles. After school, we surfed for couple hours and my best wave was a big, full rotation air 540… just kidding. Really it was a left that offered up a good section for an off-the-lip followed by a roundhouse cutback. I was stoked. On Saturday, the boys surfed Trestles all day.

The conditions and weather made for a truly classic California day.

to surf for a while and it was the perfect board to get me back in the water. The last few days, the waves have been bombing and the weather’s been spectacular. I’ve been having a lot of fun riding my 10’8” Simmons beast out at T Street and Old Man’s. The Boneyard has been especially good to me.

But then a big fog bank rolled in and the contest had to go on hold. With the contest off for the moment, I paddled out. You couldn’t even see the beach from the water and most of people weren’t quite sure where to line up.

I surf out there pretty regularly and got a couple good ones amongst the chaos.

After a while, the fog lifted, but by then the contest had been called off for the day and the crowd had thinned out even more. I surfed until sundown and got some really fun, uncrowded waves.

Aaron Lieber / Filmmaker A couple friends and I started out on Friday at 204’s, but it was kind of funky so I headed to Uppers. I’m glad I did. Uppers in the middle of the day on Friday was pretty much as good as it gets. The angle of the west swell was hitting the point just perfect and the waves were running all the way from the outside through the cove. There wasn’t a breath of wind and the crowd was light. I think I got every wave I paddled for and surfed for probably four hours. The last wave I got might have been the best

one. As people started showing up after work and school, the energy in the water started changing, then when this one came through it bowled out, had such a long wall to it. I knew I had to go in after that one… you gotta quit while you’re ahead sometimes.

f you haven’t heard of nine-year-old Makai Bray yet, no stress, he’s still young. But to be sure, he’s a grom on the rise.

With the surf pumping and not a breath of wind at Church last weekend, the NSSA Southwest Conference lucked into some of the best conditions of the year for their contest. Taking full advantage, Bray scored a huge victory in the Mini Grom division for the biggest win of his brief surfing career.

Because winning surf contests is a community effort here in San Clemente, cheering him on and chairing him up the beach when he won were fellow groms and rising stars Crosby Colapinto (last week’s Grom of the Week), Kade Matson (who just won the Rip Curl Grom Search National Title), Brayden Burch and Taj Lindblad.

“My passion is surfing,” reads Bray’s Instagram.

Considering that him and his twin brother, Maddox, have been competing since they were five years young, that seems pretty true to form. The two have been dabbling on the WSA circuit for a few years now and are regulars at the annual Stoke-O-Rama kids contest. The future is bright for the Bray boys. DP

Between work, the family and surfing, it’s been pretty busy. I haven’t been able to travel much, so it’s been really nice to have some waves at home. I’ve been surfing down at Trestles, and it’s pretty much been as good as it gets. I’m supposed to leave for Hawaii this week, but I’m trying to change my ticket and stay a couple extra days for this next round of swells. How weird does that sound? DP
