Three Development Teams Submit Statements of Qualifications for Harbor Revitalization THE LATEST: Three development teams have submitted Statements of Qualifications for the Dana Point Harbor Revitalization, officials said.

County officials said they couldn’t release names during the evaluation process, but once the evaluation has concluded, the selection will be placed on the Board of Supervisors agenda for their consideration.

The harbor revitalization phase two, which is scheduled from August to November, will widen Casitas Place and Puerto Place, and install traffic signal poles. Phase three, from December to March 2017, will install landscaping and irrigation throughout the area. There will also be signs installed and final pavement striping.

A request for proposals will be sent in September or October to the development teams that are deemed most qualified, with specific proposals due in March or April.

City Council Sends Strands Gate Amendment to Coastal Commission THE LATEST: The Dana Point City Council approved a zone text amendment that would allow the potential use of retractable gates in three locations in the Strands community.

During Tuesday night’s meeting, the Council voted unanimously in favor of sending a local coastal program amendment to the California Coastal Commission to allow for the potential use of retractable gates at the Central Strand—upper and lower—and the mid-Strand locations.

The Planning Commission approved to send the recommendation to the Council in July, voting five to zero in favor of the gates for security and public safety.

Many residents who spoke during public portion Tuesday night said they were in favor of the gates.

Kevin Darnall, president of the Strand’s homeowners association, previously spoke at the Planning Commission and again during the Council meeting and said the Strands residents were in favor of the gates.

He said the residents have seen people coming up through the community, climbing over construction walls and there has been ongoing crime where they have to call the police.

“I think it’s important the city endorse the hours of operation and the only practical way is the use of gates as proposed,” Darnall told the Council.

Dana Point resident David Buckanavage told the Council he’s lived in the Strands for four and a half years and says the gates would be a benefit for the residents.

“Police can’t be there 24 hours,” Buckanavage said. “The gates should be closed when the beach is not in operation.”

In April, the California Coastal Commission staff recommended a settlement agreement, which put an end to six years’ worth of litigation over the gates and closing times. The settlement included an agreement to modify the local coastal development program to include the approval of designated hours and operations for the access areas.

City staff members told the Council that the Local Coastal Program Amendment (LCPA) would only allow a potential use and does not mean construction would begin immediately.

City staff also stated the potential gates would not include the two trails, the switchback trail and the revetment trail, that provide 24-hour access. The three areas that could have the retractable gates are operational between 5 a.m.-10 p.m. daily.

WHAT’S NEXT: The zone amendment will make its way to the California Coastal Commission for review. City staff said, if

approved, it will come back to the city as a local coastal permit. — KP

Short-Term Rental Ordinance to be Discussed at Sept. 6 Council Meeting THE LATEST: During Tuesday night’s Council meeting, Council members agreed to move the short-term rental agenda item to the Sept. 6 meeting.

Originally, the short-term rental ordinance reading was scheduled for Sept.

20, but after multiple residents expressed their viewpoint on the matter Tuesday night, Councilman Joe Muller made the motion to move up the date.

In July, the City Council tabled a second reading of an ordinance for a second time.

The ordinance would allow for short-term rentals in all of the zoning districts where residential uses are allowed.

The Council tabled the item twice, so they could hear more input from residents.

The first reading of the ordinance was introduced in December 2013, and was followed by a second reading in January 2014, authorizing staff to submit the proposed Local Coastal Program Amendment (LCPA) to the California Coastal Commission for its approval and certification.

On March 20, 2015, after requesting additional information from the city, the Commission deemed the LCP Amendment complete. In April 2016, the Commission conducted a hearing and approved the city’s LCPA with suggested modifications.

The city introduced a first reading with the modifications during the May 17 meeting.

Residents who were for, and against, the rentals stood up during public comment Tuesday night.

According to the city clerk’s office, Penny Maynard, Paul Wyatt, Nadia Khalil, Debra Lewis and Michelle Brough will be running for two open seats on the Council.

Councilmen Carlos Olvera and Scott Schoeffel will not be running again.

Schoeffel is unable to run due to serving two terms previously. Olvera recently said he would not seek re-election.

Dana Point residents Berenika Schmitz and Nick St. George pulled nomination paperwork, but did not file before the deadline, officials from the clerk’s office said.

South Coast Water District, County Discuss Boat Storage at San Juan Creek THE LATEST: A county official told South Coast Water District officials they would like to create a cooperative agreement regarding the boat storage in Lot A of the San Juan Creek project.

During an Aug. 11 meeting, Mark Denny, Chief Operating Officer for the county, told the district he and SCWD General Manager Andrew Brunhart discussed a cooperative agreement between the county and the district to operate Lot A on behalf of the district.

“The ball is in the district’s court,” Denny said. “We’ve expressed our interest, we’re started the process of construction down there. The sooner we can provide storage to the public that would be better for the boaters down there.”

‘The Endless Summer’ Screening Planned for Saturday The County of Orange and OC Parks will present a free screening of The Endless Summer on Saturday, Aug. 20.

The screening begins at 7:30 p.m. at Salt Creek Beach Park. Parking will be free after 5 p.m. for the event.

The screening coincides with an exhibit by OC Parks on the film at the Old Orange County Courthouse until Oct. 31.

Wine & Beer Tasting Event to Benefit Marines The Marine Corps League will be holding a wine and beer tasting benefit on Wednesday, Aug. 31 at Cannons Restaurant.

Caltrans/OCTA and Orange County Public Works are planning road work that could affect Dana Point residents.

On Friday, Aug. 19, Caltrans/OCTA will begin closing three of four southbound I-5 lanes at 10 p.m.

On Saturday, two lanes will be open going southbound, and there will also be asphalt work along Pacific Coast Highway in both directions from 7 a.m.-4 p.m.

A one-lane closure will occur in each direction on PCH. The street improvement project in Dana Point Harbor Revitalization will continue through Aug. 24, with work along Casitas Place and Puerto Place.

According to the county, concrete ADA access ramps will be poured, roadway structural section on Casitas Place south of Dana Point Harbor Drive.

The work is scheduled from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and the schedule is tentative and could change based on weather and other factors.

HOTELS APPROVED BY PLANNING COMMISSION, APPEALED TO CITY COUNCIL It seemed that on July 26, the two hotel projects looking to come into downtown San Juan Capistrano had worked through the last piece of red tape. After years of hearings and working with city staff and commissions, the city’s Planning Commission unanimously approved both projects, each with one condition.

“Folks, I think we have two hotels on our way,” Planning Commissioner Mark Speros said merrily before adjourning the meeting.

But more delays are on the horizon for both hotels as three appeals objecting to the Planning Commission’s approvals were filed at City Hall by the Aug. 10 deadline.

The Planning Commission’s approvals of the incoming Hotel Capistrano by Kimpton, a 102-room hotel to be constructed between the Egan House and the Esslinger Building along Camino Capistrano, and the Inn at the Mission, a 124-room hotel to be operated by Marriott International’s Autograph Collection and constructed at the corner of Ortega Highway and El Camino Real, have both been appealed, meaning the projects now must go before the City Council.

Prior to the appeals, both the Cultural Heritage Commission and the Planning Commission had reviewed the projects most recently at the end of July. The Cultural Heritage Commission recommended each project be approved, even though some concerns were voiced from a few commissioners regarding “view corridors” and whether the Inn at the Mission’s twostory restaurant would be too tall and block views of the Great Stone Church.

When the hotels came before Planning Commission, a letter from Attorney Erik Friess was included in the discussion. Friess laid out point by point why Bill Griffith, owner of the Egan House and Esslinger Building, opposed the Hotel Capistrano as proposed. City staff went through each point per the request of Commissioner Tim Neely, and presented objections to each argument made by Friess.

The commissioners were satisfied, and went on to approve both projects.

On Aug. 10, the City Clerk received an appeal from Friess and Griffith, which has the same July 26 letter to the Planning Commission attached. Friess wrote that the Hotel Capistrano “project as approved violates the San Juan Capistrano Municipal Code, various city plans and policies, and the California Environmental Quality Act.” The letter details the issues brought up at Planning Commission, including contesting the hotel’s height, setback and floor-area ratio.

Two other appeals were also filed on Aug. 10 against the Inn at the Mission’s approval.

U.S. BORDER PATROL SEIZES $4 MILLION IN DRUGS IN SAN CLEMENTE AREA IN TWO DAYS In two separate incidents over the weekend, nearly $4 million in drugs were recovered by U.S. Border Patrol agents, according to a press release distributed Monday, Aug. 15.

In total, agents seized 38.8 pounds of methamphetamine, 116.29 pounds of cocaine and 52.69 pounds of fentanyl. The total estimated street value of the narcotics is $3,940,680.

U.S. Border Patrol agents encountered a man on Interstate 5 near San Clemente on Sunday, Aug. 14, who was transporting 81 bundles of narcotics stashed in a 2005 Ford Focus.

“At approximately 1 p.m. (Aug. 14), a Border Patrol agent conducted a vehicle stop near the Avenida Presidio exit,” the release stated. “During the stop, a Border Patrol K-9 alerted agents to conduct a search of the vehicle, resulting in the discovery of 24 bundles of methamphetamine, 42 bundles of cocaine and 15 bundles of fentanyl. The driver was also in possession of marijuana for personal use.”

The suspect and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration. The vehicle was seized by the U.S. Border Patrol.

“To the fullest extent, we will continue to deploy our personnel and resources at our checkpoints and along our major local highways to impact criminal organizations and protect our communities,” Chief Patrol Agent Richard A. Barlow stated in the release.

During a vehicle stop near San Clemente on Saturday, Aug. 13, agents seized 47.43 pounds of methamphetamine that was found in the spare tire of a 2008 Dodge Caliber.

“Agents arrested the driver of the vehicle, a 21-year-old woman, for narcotics smuggling,” the release stated. “At the time of the arrest, the woman was traveling with her two siblings, an 8-year-old girl and 12-yearold boy, who were turned over to San Diego County Child Welfare Services.”

As of July 31, San Diego Sector has intercepted 1,069 pounds of cocaine and 2,166 pounds of methamphetamine during fiscal year 2016, the release stated.

“To prevent the illicit smuggling of humans, drugs and other contraband, the U.S. Border Patrol maintains a high level of vigilance in corridors of egress away from our nation’s borders,” the release stated.

Do you want your residential neighborhood to turn into hotel row? My family has lived in Capo Beach in the same house for 29 years. Many of our neighbors have lived here longer than that. For the past two years, I have lived next door to a short-term vacation rental. This rental has changed the whole character of our small cul-de-sac street. What used to be an upscale, quiet neighborhood has been transformed into a nightmare.

The six bedroom house next-door has been divided into two units. One can rent the whole house or the upstairs and downstairs can be rented separately. The city’s permit says they can have 14 occupants, but no one ever checks to see how many people are really there. Fourteen people is way too many, no other homes on this street house 14 people, and of course everyone brings a friend so there has been 30-plus people partying there many times.

Needless to say, there are numerous problems including noise, loud talking, laughing, crying, arguing, drunk people, bright house lights on all night, no parking, cars coming and going, taxis, Ubers, police, fire engines, trash, bicycles, etc. at all hours of the day and night. They even play beer pong on the dining room table!

Sometimes they arrive in several vans, motorhomes or trucks to bring all the renters and their luggage. We never know who is going to be living next door to us.

It changes every couple of days. The owners are running a hotel business in our residential family neighborhood. Permits are being issued that are transforming family neighborhoods into commercial rental zones.

We want to be safe, protect our property values and the quality of life in our neighborhood zoned for single family homes.

This has happened to us and if the Council votes for the ordinance on Sept. 26, this will happen to you. Heed this warning and speak up against short-term vacation rentals. It’s our city and our lifestyle that will be changed.

going on, let me make it perfectly clear that as a 12-year resident of Dana Point I am against the passage of the proposed short-term rental proposition.

Why am I against it? All you need to do is read about all the problems other communities that have allowed this type of proposal to happen are experiencing and how after the fact they are trying to stop it. In some cases, it’s the homeowners themselves; in others, the city councils have jumped on the stop-it bandwagon.

As some communities are finding out, once allowed, it is near impossible to stop.

On the side of those who support this proposal I can see no other reason other than greed as to why they want it passed.

Money, money, money. It always comes down to that one simple fact. Any other stated reasons are pure nonsense. Money is the one and only reason.

Lost in their greed is the fact that all of Dana Point will be rezoned as a commercial area; we will no longer be a family community, rather we will become a commercial enterprise. Gone will be the ability for residents to move around their own city, gone will be our right to govern ourselves since the current proposal turns that power over to the Coastal Commission, meaning the state. We will no longer have the final say on anything that affects our community or our lifestyle.

The state will now make every decision with little concern (if any) for the local citizens.

Why would the state commission do that, you ask?

More taxes, which equals money.

It always, always comes down to that one simple fact.

Lastly, has anybody seen the stories in the newspapers and on TV about how

short-term rental agencies have caused sky-rocketing rents? End result is most long-term working renters can’t afford to rent apartments, let alone buy houses.

What is to become of these people that are for the most part your neighbors, friends, co-workers and families? Do you really care for nothing other than how much more money you can make?

It’s time to wake up, Dana Point, and say as loud as we can, “No” to this proposal.

AN IDEA FOR BEVMO! MATT EHRHART, Dana Point

It would appear that the BevMo project now under construction in Dana Point will not be winning any popularity contests.

However, let us remember that the project was approved by the city planning agencies, although there were objections by many people.

Here is an idea that might be worth considering: Have a creative architect design a structure resembling a lighthouse, which would be built on the roof of the existing structure.

This would be an attractive statement at the entrance to the Lantern District in a city noted for its nautical heritage.

At the Movies: ‘Sausage Party’ is Spicy Fun

S

ince Ralph Bakshi’s shockingly racy animated cult comedy Fritz the Cat in 1972, the market for R- or even NC-17-rated animated films has had few efforts and even fewer successes. But what’s a hit is really a home run. Bakshi found followers with Fritz, Coonskin (1975) and American Pop (1981). Two generations later, Matt Stone and Trey Parker gained notoriety with South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut (1999) and Team America: World Police (2004). And to a lesser extent, Richard Linklater’s roto-scoped dramas Waking Life (2001) and A Scanner Darkly (2006) became critical darlings. Since then, there has yet to be a mature cartoon to grab audiences.

But this August, Sausage Party, an R-rated film that just staved off the NC-17 mark, brings longtime friends and comedy partners Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen of Superbad (2007), Pineapple Express (2008) and This is the End (2013) back together, with Rogen joining his usual on-screen buddies Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader and Michael Cera to voice a group of foul-mouthed, drug-induced, sex-obsessed grocery products who discover the meaning of their short lives in this vulgar CGI cartoon.

Sausage Party brings in some unexpected names behind the scenes like indie producer Megan Ellison and Disney composing legend Alan Menken, but its tone and humor are typical of the Judd Apatow variety. There is a fair share of social commentary on racial stereotypes and religion that is pretty ham-fisted, yet some of the food puns are amusing enough, and Edward Norton’s spot-on Woody Allen impression as a bagel might be worth viewing with a group of friends. Determined Dolphins Ready for New Season After winless campaign, Dana Hills heads into 2016 hungry for success

By Steve Breazeale, Dana Point Times Phil Skinner knows his team is tough.

Last season, the veteran coach saw his team, a group made up primarily of sophomores, go through a gauntlet of a schedule.

Every time the young Dana Hills football team was tasked with taking the field against tough, nonleague opponents and talented South Coast League teams, they toed the line.

Following a winless season, the large group of returning players showed their coach yet again that they are a resilient bunch throughout a busy offseason passing league schedule. The Dolphins competed in passing league tournaments almost every week this offseason, and had a strong showing at the Huntington Beach Summer Passing Tournament on July 23. The Dolphins won their opening game against Damien and found themselves in a tight game with Corona in pool play. With the clock winding down, the Dolphins edged out a victory on a last-second drive.

“There were a lot of good moments in (that tournament) where they continued to show that they’re getting better and better in battle-type situations,” Skinner said.

“These guys got their lumps (last year) and got tougher for it, and they’re hungry to get that win. There’s some value in that. They’re hungrier than any other group I’ve seen in the past and that’s good.”

Dana Hills returns 13 starters from last year’s team, and many of them are now juniors. The team is searching for its first win in over a year, and will get a chance to do so when it opens its season at home against Marina on Aug. 26.

The Dark Side During summer practices, Dana Hills players always wear their signature blue practice jerseys. In years past the offensive and defensive players always wear the same color. This year, the offense decided to continue the tradition and don the blue jerseys.

The defense, however, chose black ones.

As part of an identity overhaul, the defense wanted to adopt a tougher, grittier persona. They took to calling themselves ‘the dark side’, and the black jerseys just made sense. When defensive players showed up to practice, they would be in black. Now that school has started, Skinner sees pockets of his defensive players walking through the halls wearing the same black shirts.

“The offense are always the good guys so we’re the bad guys,” junior linebacker Julian Casillas said. “We’re supposed to shut down our offense (in practice) this year and that’s helped us play together. It builds chemistry and bonds us together.”

last season. Junior Joe Wilske, a secondteam all-league selection, returns to play outside linebacker.

The Dolphins have speed in the secondary, and will be led by returning senior Ryder Lynch. Junior Blake Rubio and Gavin Pappagalo will also get time at defensive back positions.

Up front on the defensive line, returning junior Hunter Steele will lead at defensive end. “(The defense) is a little bit of a mean and nasty group and they’ve taken hold of that. It’s really good that they have that identity,” Skinner said. “They’re good kids, obviously, but they’re trying to develop that tough defensive mentality.”

The Dolphins defense allowed an average of 54.9 points per game in 2015, and will rely on its new attitude and experience to turn things around.

Offense Hoping Experience Pays Off Last season was a learning experience for quarterback Corey Cisowski and the Dolphins offense. The unit was only able to score an average of 8.9 points per game.

As a sophomore, Cisowski threw for 1,209 yards and six touchdowns to 16 interceptions. He completed roughly 40 percent of his passes. The Dolphins’ busy offseason, coupled with his experience competing against top-tier defenses as a sophomore, has Cisowski confident he can help move the chains in 2016.

Skinner said Cisowski has honed his ability to read defenses, which freed the Dolphins up to run more play-action in the offseason and get their speedy playmakers the ball.

Sophomore Jake Baldivias was called up as a freshman last year to be the team’s running back in league play, where he impressed the coaching staff. Baldivias returns

to the backfield and will share time with junior Jack Oliver.

Lynch and Pappagalo give the Dolphins dynamic speed on the outside at receiver, and will be complemented by slot receivers Joe Tonini and Matt Sanford. “(The offense) is a really good core group of guys that I feel I can go all around the field with. I don’t just rely on one or two guys,” Cisowski said.

A New Chapter In the offseason, the Dolphins and El Toro moved from the South Coast to the Sea View League. Skinner is hoping Dana Hills’ nonleague schedule will prepare them for what he believes is an evenly matched league.

Although they have been competing in the South Coast League since 2014, the Dolphins will be familiar with their new league opponents. Dana Hills got to see Laguna Hills, Capistrano Valley and Aliso Niguel up close in passing league tournaments over the summer. It’s not the same as competing against a team in pads, but it gave the team a chance to see what they’ll be up against come winter time.

“It’s a good level of competition. I think in each game, any team can beat anybody,” Skinner said of the Sea View League.

The Dolphins nonleague schedule is filled with north Orange County teams like Sunny Hills (Sept. 2), Pacifica (Sept. 9) and Fullerton (Sept. 30).

Last year’s schedule was not kind to the Dolphins, but they are champing at the bit, waiting for the new season to begin.

“The mindset (last year) was we were going to go out and do the best we can,” Cisowski said. “This year, we have more of a winning mindset and we’re using that as a chip on our shoulder to go out and win some games.”

The Dolphins receiving corps is a strength this season, and Sanford adds to the group’s dynamic as an inside slot receiver. The Dolphins offense caters to its receivers’ skill, and Sanford should get plenty of chances in 2016.

Bortnick will anchor the left guard position on the Dolphins’ offensive line. One of Bortnick’s biggest strengths, according to Skinner, is his intelligence. The 5-foot-11inch, 220-pound junior guard holds a 4.6 GPA and is an important part of an offensive line that doesn’t have big size, but moves quickly.

As a sophomore, Casillas proved he could match up against the best. The Dolphins’ talented middle linebacker held his own in 2015, and was named firstteam All-South Coast League, a rare feat for a second-year player. Casillas is a team captain and one of the leaders of the defense.

Lynch is one of a handful of seniors on the Dolphins roster, and he leads by example. The Dolphins will use Lynch as a two-way player on offense, as a receiver, and defense, as a cornerback. The coaching staff loves Lynch’s decision-making, speed and physicality on defense. “He’s everything you want in a senior leader,” Skinner said.

Rubio will be one of the more experienced members of the Dolphins secondary after getting significant playing time as a sophomore in 2015.

Rubio will be a key part in the Dolphins’ attempt to clamp down on opposing offenses.

The Dolphins’ defense has adopted a gritty, hard-nosed approach, and the group wants to play with a physical edge. On the defensive line, Steele will be setting the tone.

At 6-feet-2-inches tall, Steele brings a physical dimension to the front lines.

Wilske, a 6-1, 175-pound outside linebacker, returns to help lead a veteran group in the middle of the field. Wilske is another Dolphins starter that cut his teeth as a sophomore in 2015, and earned second-team All-South Coast League honors.

Coach: Jeff Turley League: Sunset 2014-2015 Record: 1-9 (0-5 league) 2014-2015 vs. DH: DNP Season Outlook: The Vikings struggled to score points in 2015, but return their leading rusher and receiver in 2016. Senior running back Cooper Malerstein figures to be the featured back for Marina. Malerstein also plays safety and was the team’s leading tackler last season.

Senior receiver Noah Holmes, who had a team-high 19 catches for 279 yards and five touchdowns in 2015, returns.

Location: Fullerton Time: 7 p.m.

Coach: Ed DeAvila League: Freeway 2014-2015 Record: 4-6 0-5 league) 2014 -2015 vs. DH: DNP Season Outlook: Fullerton lost a lot of seniors to graduation this offseason, and returns just five starters to its roster. Returning to the fold, however, will be the team’s leading receiver from last season, Kody Orozco. The Indians used a stable of senior running backs last season and will need to find replacements at that position, as well as at quarterback.

Location: Buena Park HS Time: 7 p.m.

Coach: Pete Karavedas League: Freeway 2014-2015 Record: 5-6 (1-4 league) 2014-2015 vs. DH: DNP Season Outlook: Sunny Hills won four of its first five games before entering the competitive Freeway League. Despite going winless in league play, the Lancers earned a playoff berth. The Lancers were very run-oriented in 2015 and will likely continue that trend with senior running back Brandon Castelo returning. Castelo was a key member of a run-first offense that averaged 240 yards rushing per game.

Location: Laguna Hills Time: 7 p.m.

Coach: Mike Maceranka League: Sea View 2014-2015 Record: 8-4 (2-2 league) 2014-2015 vs. DH: DNP Season Outlook: The Hawks sent longtime head coach Bruce Ingalls out in style last season by rallying to claim a playoff berth and advancing to the second round of the CIF-SS Southwest Division playoffs in Ingalls’ final season.

Now, coaching duties fall to Mike Maceranka, who played for Laguna Hills and had a previous coaching stint there. Senior running back Chandler France and receiver Logan Montgomery return on offense.

Location: Dana Hills Time: 7 p.m.

Coach: Vinnie Lopez League: Empire 2014-2015 Record: 6-4 (2-3 league) 2014-2015 vs. DH: DNP Season Outlook: Pacifica was a senior-heavy team that narrowly missed out on the CIF-SS playoffs last season. The Mariners will need to find a way to replace graduated dual-threat quarterback Nick Garcia, who scored 35 total touchdowns. Pacifica had a stingy defense last season, allowing an average of 19.8 points per game, and returns a veteran defensive line that features Cooper Way, Isaac Togia and Brendan O’Connell.

Coach: Mike Mayoral League: Sea View 2014-2015 Record: 5-6 (1-3 league) 2014-2015 vs. DH: Win, 63-0 Season Outlook: The Chargers appeared to be in prime position to contend for a Sea View League title in 2016 until senior quarterback Dawit Wilson transferred out in July. With Wilson gone, El Toro will need to find a replacement fast. El Toro moved from the South Coast to the Sea View League in the offseason, and returns several impact starters, like linebackers AJ Aguilar and Tyler Romo.

Location: Santa Monica Time: 7 p.m.

Coach: Ramsey Lambert League: Ocean 2014-2015 Record: 1-9 (1-4 league) 2014-2015 vs. DH: DNP Season Outlook: Santa Monica was only able to muster up 50 total points on offense last season en route to a one-win season, which was head coach Ramsey Lambert’s first with the program.

If the Vikings are to maintain pace against other Los Angeles-area schools in the Ocean League, they will need more production out of a large group of returning upperclassmen, which includes junior quarterback Dariush Sayson.

Location: Aliso Niguel Time: 7 p.m.

Coach: Kurt Westling League: Sea View 2014-2015 Record: 3-7 (1-3 league) 2014-2015 vs. DH: Win, 49-6 Season Outlook: Filling the void left by graduated senior quarterback Nick Chapman will not be easy, but the Wolverines are hoping to find the prolific passer’s replacement in either junior Nate Sorensen or sophomore Kyle Robertson. Aliso Niguel averaged 326.5 yards passing per game last season. Running back/receiver Andre Cotton will help ignite the offense. As a junior, Cotton tallied a combined 12 touchdowns.

Coach: Carl Agnew League: Garden Grove 2014-2015 Record: 3-8 (3-2 league) 2014-2015 vs. DH: DNP Season Outlook: If last year is any indication, expect Los Amigos to run the ball frequently in 2016. The Lobos attempted only 90 passes last season and ran the ball at a high clip. The team returns senior running back Johnny Alvarado, who ran for 755 yards on 127 carries and scored seven touchdowns as a junior. Alvarado also plays linebacker, where he will be joined by senior Alexander Contreras.

Coach: Ernst Bucher League: Sea View 2014-2015 Record: 5-5 (1-3 league) 2014-2015 vs. DH: DNP Season Outlook: Capistrano Valley came very close to reaching the postseason for a second straight year in 2015, but they were denied entry following an overtime loss to Aliso Niguel in the final game of the season. Senior quarterback Kevin Brown will look to build on his 1,691 yard, 19 touchdown junior campaign. Senior safety Devin Jenkins, who had 101 tackles last season, returns.

Scientific Fun: Ocean Institute Holds Final Family Science Night

hildren squealed with delight when Terri Hernandez pulled out a large Columbian Rainbow Boa Constrictor during the Ocean Institute’s Family Science Night on Thursday, Aug. 11.

There were cages on the floor filled with different animals for kids to see.

Some were filled with reptiles, some with furry mammals and other cages held animals that tested the mettle of the young scientists—a scorpion, a tarantula and cockroaches.

This event was part of a series the Ocean Institute held this summer. Family Science Night invited guests of all ages to learn about different topics including sharks, waves, fireworks and animals.

During the Aug. 11 event, the topic was Animal Adventures.

Hernandez works with Adventures in Living Science, a company that customizes a science program that highlights four ani-

mals, and a fifth “mystery” animal. Each program has a theme and a style.

During the family science night, Hernandez introduced animals, and had staff members carry the animals around; some were allowed to be touched, but others, like the scorpion, was not recommended.

The room was full of children of various ages, and adults even got into the animals.

During Animal Adventures, Hernandez brought out a prairie dog, a hedgehog, a rabbit, a desert tortoise, different snakes, a couple of lizards and a scorpion.

Hernandez told the audience about each of the animals’ habitats, their eating habits and where they can be found in California.

The Ocean Institute will hold other events throughout the year geared toward families of all ages.

“We have the Tall Ships Festival coming up,” Latona said. “We have a haunted night in October before Halloween.” DP

Ending a Chapter City Resident Carlos Olvera Finishes Public Service Career with City Council

C

arlos Olvera says he’s finishing one more chapter of his career: the public service career.

Olvera told the Dana Point Times last week he would not seek re-election this November, but will instead continue his work with the historical commission and spend time with his family.

Olvera has worked with various committees in the city for more than 25 years, and with just a few months left of his seat on City Council, he sat down with the Times to discuss his career.

Olvera began his public service for the city in 1989 when he was appointed to the first Dana Point Planning Commission after city incorporation. In 1990, he served as its second chairman.

“The first Planning Commission worked with the City Council to create policy,” Olvera said. “We would have joint meetings, the 10 of us, to create the general plan and our ordinances. It was during that time we were setting the foundation for what we wanted in our city.”

While on the Planning Commission, Olvera said he had the opportunity to put input in about the historical preservation program.

“It took about 20 years to get through the hurdles, but when it got done, a project came up to demolish the Doheny House.”

demolished, Olvera was president of the Dana Point Historical Society.

He debated with the Planning Commission and City Council not to approve the demolition, and after three years of back and forth, the demolition permit was denied.

Olvera said he was president of the Historical Society for nine years, and had to step down from the Society when he announced he was running for City Council.

In 2011, Olvera was elected to the City Council, and he served as mayor for a year in 2015.

Olvera said he was asked about running for City Council and was elected to complete the town center.

“I have had a warm spot from day one about the town center,” Olvera said.

He said he wanted to make sure as much historical atmosphere of Dana Point was kept into the district as possible.

“I did not want to lose that,” Olvera said.

“I was just in a position to make all of that happen.”

When asked if he feels the city kept as much as they could, he said, “Yes.” For the past four years, Olvera has also been on the Orange County Historical Commission, where he’s the Chairman and the Fifth District Representative.

Over the years, Olvera has been involved with the Orange County Library Advisory Board, the Orange County Vector Control District Board, the South Coast Water District, Coastal Animal Services Authority, Ocean Water Quality Subcommittee, the Homeless Task Force and more.

Looking forward, past Nov. 8, Olvera said he will continue his work with genealogy, continue his column with the Times and spend time visiting family across the country.

“In 25 years, I’d say historical preservation is the main thing I did,” Olvera said.

“I’ve completed my three careers: my military career, my professional career and my public service career.” DP Page 21

he city of Dana Point Recreation Department’s co-ed kickball and softball league seasons have come to an end, and regular season champions have been crowned. The recreation league playoffs are just around the corner.

Regatta Marks End of Soda Pop Summer Series DANA POINT TIMES

W

hat started five years ago as the brainchild of a former Dana Point Yacht Club commodore, the Soda Pop Series has quickly turned into a popular summer event for youth sailors in all four of the Dana Point Harbor-based youth sailing programs.

The Soda Pop Series features youth sailors from Dana Point Yacht Club, Westwind Sailing, Dana West Yacht Club and the Mariner Sea Scouts taking part in friendly competition at the end of each week during the summer months. A typical Soda Pop regatta features 20 to 30 boats, with divisions for kids ages eight to 18.

The series’ final regatta took place in the Dana Point Harbor on Aug. 10.

Monday Kickball The District and Ron Swanson’s Parks & Rec finished the season tied for the best overall record. Both teams went 5-1 overall, and the two teams split the season series with one another. The District pulled off a big 10-1 win against Ron Swanson’s Parks & Rec in the final game of the regular season on Aug. 15.

Hairy Larry’s went 2-4 overall and Pitch Please went 0-6.

All four teams will compete in the playoff tournament, which begins on Aug. 22.

Monday Softball Dead Pull proved to be too much for the rest of the Monday night softball league teams, as they cruised to a 5-1 overall record and a top seed in the postseason tournament. Dead Pull’s lone loss this season came at the hands of Feel the Heat, which defeated them 8-0 on July 25.

Feel the Heat and Smooth Operators both went 4-2 on the season, while Gimps went 3-3 and CrossFit Dana Point went 2-4.

Swallows was the only team that failed to win a game.

The Monday softball playoff tournament is set to begin on Aug. 22.

Wednesday Beginner Kickball The Wednesday beginner league turned out to be the most closely contested league this season. Balls & Dolls ended up on top of the standings with a 4-2 record. Just Can’t Kick Enough earned the second spot with a final win on the last game of the season to finish 3-3. One Kick Wonders took third with a 3-3 record and Codgers & Kids placed fourth with a 2-4 record.

The league’s tournament will begin on Aug. 24.

Wednesday Experienced Kickball The Grasskickers ran away with the Wednesday experienced kickball league regular season title after going 5-1 overall.

The rest of the four-team league, was closely contested. Beer Battered and Wine Bistro Whiskeyballers each went 2-3-1, and Luxe Restaurant went 2-4.

The league’s postseason tournament will begin Aug. 24. DP

Locals Compete in ISA World Surfing Games U.S. team takes bronze overall and gold in Aloha Cup

urfers from 27 nations competed in the INS International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games in Playa Jacó, Costa Rica, from Aug. 6-12.

Among those selected to compete for the United States team were San Clemente locals Kevin Schulz and Colt Ward.

The U.S. team also included surfers Brett Simpson, Nolan Rapoza, Maddie Peterson, Tia Blanco, coach Ryan Simmons and assistant coach/team official Brian Bourgeois.

Schulz, 21, currently holds the No. 10 rank in the World Surf League’s (WSL)

annon Montoya was introduced to surfing like many local groms, catching the waves of San Clemente’s best breaks as his father rode on the back of his longboard.

He started surfing at about the age of 5 with his father, Brandon Montoya, pushing him into waves.

“My dad has taught me to surf ever since, and I go surfing as much as I can,” said Cannon.

Now 8 years old, Cannon is a Western Surfing Association (WSA) competitor paddling into the competition all on his own.

“It’s a whole different perspective watching from the beach,” said Brandon, adding that it is also an exciting sight to see.

Cannon also enjoys competing in other mini surf series and events like the Positive Vibe Warriors Foundation’s STOKE-ORAMA, an annual fundraising event and surf contest for kids 12 and younger put on by the Gudauskas family.

“Everyone is really happy and stoked, and you get to see a bunch of friends,” said Cannon when talking about the STOKE-ORAMA. As the oldest of three siblings, Cannon said he likes surfing with his dad and his younger brother, Brooks, who he will occasionally help push into waves as his father did for him.

His favorite surf spots are Lower Trestles and Riviera, and his favorite board to ride is the shortboard his father shaped for him at his friend’s shaping bay on Los Molinos.

“I’ve been shaping about 10 years, and I love watching him surf it; he’s there during

Colt Ward, 19, is also a WSL QS competitor for North America. He took a second place result in Round 1, but also did not advance past Round 2.

The U.S. team took home bronze overall, earned a gold medal in the Aloha Cup event for the first time in U.S. history, and Blanco became the Women’s Gold Medalist in the Open Women’s competition for the second consecutive year.

Simmons said while he had a younger team this year, the members surfed really well.

“I felt we were the team to beat based off the performance,” said Simmons.

He explained that the team experienced some judging calls that went against them, referring to Rapoza and Schulz losing their heats when he believed they should have advanced.

“We never gave up; we never thought we were out of it, and then we won the Aloha Cup Saturday,” Simmons said. He said the team went from ninth place to fifth to third within the last few days of the competition, but despite setbacks they were able to push through with a positive attitude.

“One of my keys as a coach, I try to bring that positivity to my students,” Simmons said.

In the Aloha Cup event, the top eight teams from the previous ISA World Surfing Games were invited to compete in a tagteam surfing competition.

Five surfers from each country made up a team, and competitors were required to catch three waves each and run in and tag their next teammate to surf all in under an hour. The event consisted of two four-team semifinal rounds, and one final round where the top four countries would compete for gold.

“It all came down to the unity of the team in the end, and to come out on top with such a great crew was the best feeling ever,” said Schulz. DP

Not only does Cannon like to help design his surfboards, but he also likes to draw and spray paint skateboards with his friends.

“I design skateboards and spray paint old skateboards, and sell them to the neighbors,” said Cannon, who has already sold one skateboard he designed.

Cannon said when he grows up, he wants to be a pro surfer or pro skateboarder, looking up to surfers like John John Florence and Dane Reynolds, and skateboarders like Greyson Fletcher and Ryan Sheckler.

He attends Concordia Elementary School, and said if he could travel anywhere to surf he would like to surf in Hawaii or Indonesia. DP
