Five things Dana Point should know this week Ocean Institute Volunteer Aims to ‘Save the Sharks’ THE LATEST: When the city of San Clemente closes its beaches due to shark sightings, surfers bemoan the act; Mariah Meyer, however, becomes excited.

A San Clemente native, graduate of JSerra Catholic High School and volunteer at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, Meyer said she became interested in studying sharks from her marine biology classes.

She will attend California State University Long Beach (CSULB) next year to study marine biology and play water polo.

Meyer said she’s done about 35 scuba dives near sharks and 10 dives where she’s been able to swim with the sharks.

“I really like the big sharks, the same ones that (CSULB) is working with, and I want to know their migration patterns.

They’re pretty hard to study.” Meyer said.

On her website, Saving the Sharks, Meyer has compiled lists from The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and she provides information on shark behavior and anatomy from her school textbooks.

Meyer is also an advocate of laws that protect sharks in U.S. and international waters.

“The problem is we’re protecting endangered sharks but not the other ones that are being hunted for their fins,” Meyer said. “Even though the U.S. is enacting these laws, it’s not going to matter if we can’t get Thailand and South Korea and Spain on board.”

Meyer said she understands the fear people may have due to the recent shark activity, but she also said the sharks are a sign of clean waters.

“You should be concerned if you don’t see them in our ocean,” she said. “Sharks are the sign of a healthy ocean, but if you don’t see sharks then you know there is a problem.”

WHAT’S NEXT: Meyer said she wants to get her master’s degree and work with Chris Lowe, Ph.D., the director of Shark Lab at CSULB and local expert on shark behavior. After that, she said she wants to take time studying shark behavior and eventually get her Ph.D. in ichthyology, which is the study of fish. —Eric Heinz

The scientific trip teaches guests about different marine animals that glow in the dark and allows them to explore the nocturnal world of marine birds, sea lions and plankton.

Crew members deployed a net 600 feet into the ocean to capture the organisms which have the ability to make their own light.

“Bioluminescence occurs when animals are disrupted,” a crew member said as the blue light glowed on and off.

Guests are able to learn different facts about animals including pelicans, California sea lions, grunions and other birds that can be spotted in the Dana Point Harbor.

Wildland Fire Spreads to Roughly 250 Acres on Camp Pendleton

During the Ocean Institute’s Bioluminescence Night Cruise on Friday, June 23, plankton illuminated a shade of blue, like

THE LATEST: At a rapid pace, a wildland fire initially was 10 acres and spread to 300 acres in a matter of a few hours on Wednesday, June 28, adjacent to the southernmost parts of San Clemente.

At 10:14 p.m. on Wednesday, OCFA officials said the fire had been stopped from moving in the direction of homes in San Clemente.

According to the Camp Pendleton Fire Department’s Facebook page, firefighters worked through the night with water drops, dozer line and a backfiring operation after sunset.

The post also said the fire was estimated at 718 acres with a 20 percent containment, as of 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 29.

About 350 firefighters were on scene at 8:20 p.m., Orange County Fire Authority spokesperson Larry Kurtz said, and the power lines that were in danger of catching on fire are being monitored by San Deigo Gas and Electric.

OCFA stated just before 8 p.m. that the fire had grown, but was later downgraded to 250 to 300 acres.

As of 8:15 p.m., no home evacuations had been ordered for the San Clemente area, although flames could be seen less than a quarter mile from neighborhoods.

OCFA posted on Twitter Thursday morning there were no evacuations and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Planning Commission Approves Duplex Project THE LATEST: The Planning Commission unanimously approved a project which will allow the construction of two detached duplexes despite the public’s concerns.

On Monday, June 26, Capistrano Beach residents voiced their concerns regarding a new project along Via Verde during the Commission’s meeting.

Many said they believed the yards were not good areas for children to play in, but Commissioners reminded the public they had to look at the project and not consider who could move into the property but rather if the zoning met the requirements.

The project originally was tabled by the Commission last summer and they gave staff direction to work with the applicant on the architecture and parking. Now, it will consist of four dwelling units, each with four bedrooms.

Members of the public told the Commission there are currently parking issues in that area and said the properties would be too dense.

“There’s a lot of speculation of who might live there, but that’s not for us to decide,” said Vice-Chair Scott McKhann.

“The project, in my opinion, has been thoughtfully designed and I find it meets the code.”

Memorial onsite at Harbor for 9-Year-Old Dana Point Boy THE LATEST: Flowers, pictures and farewell tributes adorned a long tree at the end of the jetty on Wednesday, June 28, along Puerto Place in Dana Point, the location where 9-year-old Nathan Smith sustained fatal injuries in a skateboarding accident on Sunday, June 25.

Smith, a resident of Dana Point, was a Las Palmas Elementary School student in San Clemente. His 10th birthday would have been July 18.

One woman, who asked only to be identified as Heather, stood solemnly as she looked over the impromptu memorial site on Wednesday. She said she knew Smith and his family members. Wednesday afternoon was the first time she had been to the location of the incident since Smith died.

“He really enjoyed anything and everything outdoors, skateboarding, surfing, having fun with his friends,” Heather said.

“He just enjoyed life, and unfortunately it just went too soon. All the people down here drive too fast and…this is a kid area, basically the extension of a park. But people drive through it like it’s a freeway.”

According to Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) officials, at about 5:30 p.m., the boy was hanging on the driver’s side of a Ford E350 van while riding his skateboard, his friend was hanging onto the other side, as his 22-year-old sister was driving. the board and fell under the wheels of the still-moving vehicle, said Lt. Lane Lagaret, spokesperson for OCSD. Lagaret said people were attempting to give the boy CPR when they arrived.

OCSD has not been made aware of what specific injuries the boy suffered except that they were fatal.

Sgt. Rich Himmel of Dana Point Police Services posted a message to Nextdoor on Monday, June 26, reporting that deputies responded to the traffic collision in the Harbor.

The boy was pronounced dead at the Mission Regional Medical Center trauma center about an hour after the incident.

The boy’s friend did not suffer any injuries.

“Here at Dana Point Police Services, we are all saddened by this terrible tragedy.

Please join us in keeping this family in your thoughts and prayers,” Himmel wrote.

On Monday, Las Palmas Elementary School Principal Kristen Nelson confirmed to the Dana Point Times that the boy was a student at the school she oversees.

“The loss of this student is devastating to all of us at Las Palmas,” Nelson said in a statement. “This student will be greatly missed for his humor, kindness and energy. The entire school community is grieving and will be there for this longtime Las Palmas family.”

Lagaret said no arrests have been made, and the accident was still under investigation as of Wednesday afternoon.

The local Southern California Woodie Club continued their tradition of giving back to the community by donating part of their proceeds from April’s Doheny Woodie Club and Car Show to the San Clemente/Dana Point Junior Guard program.

The program provides ocean knowledge and safety for kids.

The presentation was made on Sunday, June 25 during the annual Doheny Surf Festival by past Club President Bill Medina and Vice President Bruce Wood.

Letters to the Editor BUDGET PRIORITIES JUDY BUSCH, Capistrano Beach

Dear Mayor, you’re jumping the shark.

I hope you will consider making less waves until you have more years on the council to better understand the ethos of this community.

Before you cut services to citizens, the wisdom of supply-side economics should be visited.

The council is inviting some hard divisions between our citizens, again.

Why conflate the cost of 10 minutes less of fireworks with the cost of 10 more minutes for police services, who are already on duty for the first 20 minutes? That appears to be dishonest politician-speak. I hope you will correct the reporting of the OC Register, to state the cost of fireworks, not the whole kitchen sink!

Please check your understanding of what Dana Point locals will tolerate.

So figure it out—that’s what you get paid the big bucks for—right?

In the interim, thanks for serving the city.

REGARDING THE CITY’S FINANCES JAY SOWELL, Dana Point

Since the city’s financial issues came to light, there has been a lot of good dialogue about the subject in letters to the editor and online comments. First of all, thank you to the Dana Point Times for making this civic conversation possible.

We should also thank everyone who has contributed to the discussion constructively and respectfully. This is the kind of conversation that will help move our city forward.

Unfortunately, some of the letters and comments have included disinformation, and political and personal attacks on individuals and civic organizations. This has been very disappointing.

The culmination of that trend is Gary Mann’s letter to the editor on June 16. Mr. Mann’s distortions demand a response.

Mr. Mann calls Measure H “ballot box zoning,” attacks our new council members Lewis and Wyatt with hyperbolic charges of financial fearmongering, and claims that the imbalances in city revenues and expenses are due to the 2007 recession.

None of these claims are true.

Far from representing “ballot box zoning,” Measure H simply codified the original Town Center Plan and forced the city council to stop revising the plan through variances and parking giveaways granted to large out-of-town developers.

situation. Pointing out real issues is not fearmongering.

Here are some of the key financial facts again: • Operating expenses up to 40 percent while revenues only grew three percent over 10 years, according to the City of Dana Point’s CAFR reports. This decade-long trend was not caused by the 2007 recession but by poorly controlled spending. Mr. Mann’s claim that the economy has grown since 2007 is correct, but that just makes the anemic 3 percent growth in city revenues against a 40 percent increase in spending all the more concerning.

• City staff of 70 now vs 48 ten years ago, with no change in population • The highest spending per capita for police services of any contract city in the county, per the City’s operating budget report. Based on 2016 data, we are higher than every other city, at $319/citizen.

(Compare to: San Clemente—$203, Laguna Niguel—$166, for example.)

Why do supporters of our legacy councilmen Viczorek, Muller and Tomlinson choose to focus not on these facts, but on smear campaigns to discredit others and to try to divide the city? The whole city is affected by their legacy of fiscal mismanagement, not just Capo Beach or Monarch Beach or Dana Point or Town Center. A more constructive approach would be to either explain and defend these financial decisions, or join the effort to change course and get our financial house in order. For instance, why were Mayor Lewis and Councilman Wyatt the only council members pushing to review the police contract? (Some have called this anti-police, which is silly. Reviewing contracts is just sound fiscal management, especially when the contract is the highest around.)

We are overdue for a comprehensive review of city finances. Why wouldn’t everyone support this? If we join together to solve our problems, we can keep Dana Point the great city it is, for all of us.

DISAPPOINTED WITH COUNCILMAN MARY ROMANO-NAVARRO, Dana Point

As a resident and registered voter of Dana Point, I continue to be disappointed in Councilman Muller’s lack of insight, his failure to respond to our citizenry and voice as reflected in recent elections, and now his poor judgement in fiscal responsibility.

Councilman Muller’s most recent letter in the newspaper reflects his lack of understanding in long-term management of our public funds and is again in complete denial of the clarion call the voters have given in electing Major Lewis and passing Measure H. That message was a call for our elected leaders to hear and respond to our community voice. We are demanding

through these elections thoughtful planning and development in order to preserve our unique beach community, and we want transparency in long-term responsible fiscal management to protect our assets and to build our community for the future.

This is a simple accounting principle: when expenditures exceed revenue, any budget is doomed for a downward spiral of deficit. And when assets are depreciating and savings becomes impossible there is no opportunity for replacement, renewal and/or growth.

Councilman Muller is failing to face this reality and is deflecting this issue by asking “do we really want to cut services?”

The answer is inconvenient and uncomfortable, but obviously “Yes!” We must prioritize services and make thoughtful, responsible cuts and adjustments—like families must do in household management of their budgets. This is Major Lewis’s call for responsible, proactive action that Councilman Muller continues to demean and ignore.

Mayor Lewis is courageous, intelligent and reflective enough to ask for more near-term budget cuts rather than to wait and bet on the illusion of future revenue to solve near-term problems. Councilman Muller’s answer to her call-to-action is to paint the Mayor as out of step. What is out of step are police costs compared to neighboring cities like San Clemente.

Dana Point is predominately a group of gated communities with private security.

So why are we paying more? Seems a reasonable question to ask. Major Lewis is standing in the moment and looking toward the future as all effective leaders do.

She is asking tough questions that require serious consideration. Councilman Muller shows his limited vision when he can’t adjust to the fiscal reality and insists on continued spending while a budget deficit is looming.

More importantly Councilman Muller is ignoring our community voice, dividing the council and minimizing the Mayor’s efforts to suit his ulterior motives and petty grievances. What is the point of that?

Does he want to rehash old arguments that have been given voice and direction through elections or does he want to move the city forward? Unfortunately, his chronic obstructionism is impeding our need for community, collaboration and cooperation in solving current and projected challenges.

I support Major Lewis’ proactive and forward-thinking leadership. I urge others who have been impressed by her efforts and her responsiveness to our civic voice to show up and make that point at the council meeting on July 18.

E

ighteen years ago, Sofia Coppola made her mark in Hollywood with the sleeper hit The Virgin Suicides and then flew to mega success with the Oscar-winning Lost in Translation (2003). Since then, her efforts have been rather polarizing, with Marie Antoinette (2006), Somewhere (2010) and The Bling Ring (2013). But fortunately for her fans, her new film, The Beguiled, a second adaptation of Thomas Cullinan’s novel, A Painted Devil, still has the distinctive Coppola touch.

In 1863, Virginia, young schoolgirl named Amy (Oona Lawrence) finds a wounded Civil War Union soldier John McBurney (Colin Farrell), outside the boarding house where she resides.

Quickly, the women and girls of the house, including headmistress Martha (Nicole Kidman), teacher Edwina (Kirsten Dunst) and eldest student Alicia (Elle Fanning) begin to nurse him back to health. But even quicker, hormones start rising between the sexually repressed women near the new man.

Coppola’s The Beguiled has the filmmaker’s usual dreamlike quality, with the soft cinematography and an atmospheric score, as well as casting her usual muses, Dunst and Fanning.

Because of this, a couple of the creative decisions to the plot do seem a bit absurd at times with the straightforward narrative and subtlety. But the performances, particularly from Dunst and Lawrence, are strong, and Coppola doesn’t feel the need to push the envelope with the innuendo. Although Don Siegel’s original 1971 adaptation was racier and provocative, Coppola’s update brings a new perspective from the female point of view for any fans of the director’s style. DP

And so, began the male garibaldi’s quest to set up shop, perfect his home and attract the proper mate.

Every spring and summer, garibaldi (Hypsypops rubicundus), our California state marine fish, readies for breedON THE OCEAN ing season. This radiant Julianne E. Steers orange damselfish, prized for its vibrant hue, inhabits the waters of the Pacific Ocean from Monterey Bay to Baja, California along coastal reefs and among kelp forests. Protected beginning in the early seventies, they are common to our backyard waters in Dana Point and the southern Channel Islands.

Growing up to 14 inches in length, the male of the species takes on the task of cleaning the house to show he is ready for the role of caring for the young. In a prime piece of ocean-front, rocky reef real estate, the male uses his attributes to the best of his ability towards clearing all debris by picking up rocks, urchins and even sea stars with his mighty mouth and sending them packing; undersea demolition day, so-to- speak. I’ve observed many garibaldi swimming with vigor, sea star in mouth, away from their nests, to drop the intruder on the seafloor below so they now had squatter’s rights on a section of reef.

With debris removed, it’s time for lawn care. No ride-on mower for this guy. Munching gently at the kelp forest’s understory foliage, he cultivates a beautiful garden of crimson algae, all precisely uniform in length. The red color scheme is key to camouflaging and protecting his future eggs.

With excellent curb appeal in place, he

now turns on the charm. A series of jutting and dipping in front of his nicely, tendered yard hoping there are a few gravid female window shoppers passing by his corner of the reef. If that doesn’t suffice, an audible serenade of clicks and thumps created by the fish’s throat teeth are added to the display.

Cruising by each open house, the females gaze, uninterested at most male’s nest and mating spectacle. With the invested effort in egg production, she can afford to be particular and prefers to deposit her valuable clutch in the nest of the most dashing suitor. Once laid on the red-carpet, the male fertilizes those eggs. If perchance, the female lingers, he will chase her away out of fear she’ll feast on the eggs.

Now, the male garibaldi will guard the nest fiercely charging boldly in vigorous defense of their territory and physically confront intruders so that their eggs may develop. After a few weeks, the eggs hatch, procuring a bountiful brood of vibrant orange and blue.

So, when you venture out to the sea these summer, take note at the prime real estate market beneath the waves.

leven chefs from across Southern California gathered to show off their locally-sourced, eco-friendly appetizers at The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano on Saturday, June 24. But it was Chef Blake Mellgren of Dana Point’s Craft House who took home the grand prize for his crowd-pleasing Mexican street corn.

The Ecology Center’s annual Eco App Off is described as a “friendly culinary competition that celebrates local farmers, fisherman and ranchers committed to creating an ecological food future.” And the rules are simple—source every ingredient in the appetizer from within 250 miles.

Mellgren said this was the second year Craft House has participated in The Ecology Center’s Eco App Off. Last year’s dish was a fish crudo with yellowtail, and this year’s winning course was grilled Mexican street corn.

The appetizer consisted of white and yellow corn from the Coachella Valley, crema and cotija cheese from Los Angeles, micro cilantro grown in San Clemente

by South Coast Microgreens, and limes from Mellgren’s own backyard.

“We pride ourselves in sourcing everything as locally as possible at the restaurant, so why not challenge ourselves even more and try to source the whole dish from within 250 miles?” Mellgren said.

Degroote, Lynch Named to South All-Star Football Team

Dana Hills football players Davis Degroote and Ryder Lynch will get the chance to don the pads and represent their school one final time on June 30. Degroote and Lynch, both former seniors at Dana Hills, were nominated to play for the South team at the Orange County All-Star Classic football game at Orange Coast College.

The game pits high school seniors from South Orange County against those from the North, and has been played at the end of every football season for 57 years.

The 58th installment of the game, however, nearly failed to materialize. The game’s traditional organizers, the Brea Lions Club, cancelled the game back in

Shark Expert Jim Serpa to Give Lecture at DP Community Center

T

he frequency of shark sightings has ramped up over the past several months, prompting several beach closures, dozens of advisories, and a growing fascination surrounding the creatures and their behavior.

With all the buzz around sharks in the tri-city area, former park ranger and San Clemente resident Jim Serpa’s popular shark lecture, “Sharks: Myths Behind the Monster” could not come at a better time.

Serpa, who gives campfire-style lectures year-round, will be conducting his sharkcentric lecture at the Dana Point Community Center as part of the center’s Science Night on July 13 at 6:30 p.m.

Serpa will show those in attendance the various shark species found in the area and discuss this summer’s recent uptick of great white sightings.

Times last year, Serpa explained the goal of the lecture is to educate people on the true nature of sharks. As a former ranger at Torrey Pines State Beach and Doheny State Beach, Serpa has been observing the animals for 24 years.

Serpa fills his lecture with stories of encounters, anecdotes and fossil displays to help paint the picture of the animals that call our oceans home.

While he acknowledges the dangers of swimming in the surf zone when sharks have been spotted, one of his main goals is to dispel the beliefs that all sharks mean harm to beachgoers.

“If sharks really wanted us, they could have us. There are a lot of people in the water, a lot of sharks in the water and it’s extremely rare to be attacked,” Serpa told the Dana Point Times last August. “They’re not just sitting out there with their bibs on, waiting to get you.”

Doheny Surf Festival Provides Old-School Fun

ood vibes and old-school style surfing were in abundance out on the water at Dohney State Beach this weekend, as dozens of surfers, vendors and surf fans flocked to the beach to take in the Doheny Surf Festival.

The event, which celebrates the history of the sport through unique surf contests, was run by the Doheny Longboard Surf Association.

On Sunday, fans on the beach were treated to a throwback style when the tandem surf contest got underway at noon.

Tandem style surfing features a man and woman combo team on a large, custom board performing lifts. Once a rider is lifted into a position, they must hold the lift for three seconds in order to get points.

There were also several contests that required surfers to ride boards that predated 1970. Several young groms competed alongside veteran surfers in the Surfin’ 60’s open division nose riding contest. The surfers were able to use the heavier boards, which ranged from 30 to 40 pounds, and

bury them into the white water while darting back and forth to the tip of the board.

Michael Takayama, a San Clemente resident, competed in several events throughout the weekend, and believes surfing on the older boards is a practice worth continuing.

“Modern longboard (design) is kind of going back to the traditional boards. Some of the newer materials are just a bit lighter,” Takayama said in between heats Sunday.

“Some of the boards we are riding today are tanks. Back then they built what they built and they rode it well. I’ve been surfing 42 years and (this style) is just a good, fun thing.”

While the swells died down a bit for Sunday’s events, riders were greeted by consistent two- to- three-foot breakers all day Saturday. Contests were offered for surfers age 19 and under, up to the “legends” division for riders 60 and up.

hile all the attention last week was focused on the point at Lowers and the USA Surfing Championships, shortly thereafter the National Scholastic Surfing Association’s National Championships took to the water up in Huntington Beach. Needless to say, it has been a big week for the groms.

Week nod this lap around the track goes to San Clemente’s David Economos, who came out swinging in Surf City. Thanks to another round of fun-sized south swell and some epic summertime conditions, the powerful regular-footer got rolling in the early heats and hasn’t looked back since.

Blitzing his way through the highly competitive Explorer Men’s division, he made it through the semifinals and surfed in the final for the national title on Wednesday, June 28. Economos is also entered to compete in the Open Men’s division, which gets underway on Friday and runs through the weekend.
