Five things Dana Point should know this week City, Opticos Design hold Doheny Village Code Meeting THE LATEST: Dana Point residents were able to catch a glimpse of and provide suggestions about what Doheny Village could look like during a meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

Inside Capo Beach Church, Opticos Design, Inc. told city officials and residents about the form-based code that could reshape Doheny Village into a walkable urban district.

“I think we heard loud and clear what the residents want to see,” said Dan Parolek, principal of Opticos Design, Inc. Last year, Opticos was hired by the city to help residents refine the vision of Doheny Village. Over the course of five days, Opticos staff held a design charette where residents, city officials and Opticos staff discussed ideas they wanted to see in the village. At the end of the meeting, designs were set up in the room, and people were able to comment on them.

During the meeting on Wednesday, Parolek showed a concept for the village that pinpointed four district environments, each with its own zoning code. These included a “maker district” with walkable streets and artisan shops; a main street with entertainment options and public transportation; and residential neighborhoods. Each district would be designated with either a small or large “footprint,” indicating the potential financial, social and infrastructural impacts of potential development.

“The zoning code now doesn’t allow a lot of what the community wanted,” said Tony Perez, director of form-based coding at Opticos. “Currently, it allows for drive thrus, and that’s not what the community wants to see there.”

For parking in all four districts, if the space is residential, units with one bedroom or a studio must require one parking spot. For non-residential uses, depending on size, the space could require two spots per 1,000 square feet or none at all.

Some residents voiced concerns about the flow of traffic in the village.

Parolek said officials have had transportation studies done on the area. He added that the installation of roundabouts would be beneficial, not slow traffic and would help Dana Point Times September 16-22, 2016

Headlands Developer to File Counter Lawsuit against City

at rates that were substantially higher than the ‘standard municipal rate’ as authorized in our agreement.”

Edward said the Headlands has paid more than $1.5 million in legal fees to the city over 12 years.

He said in February 2016, after five months of refusing to give the Headlands copies of the underlying legal bills, the city sent the invoices that dated back to 2003. Edwards said after review, the city had overbilled the Headlands $667,000.

THE LATEST: Sanford Edward, developer of Headlands Reserve, LLC, said he plans to file a counter lawsuit against the city of Dana Point.

On Aug. 29, the city filed a lawsuit against the Headlands Reserve, LLC and Edward, claiming he did not pay for legal fees and costs incurred by the city while defending legal and administrative claims created by the Headlands project. The complaint also claims Edward committed fraud.

Edward said he has “no choice” in filing the counter lawsuit after the city rejected an administrative claim he sent after he received the city’s invoices he found to be unjustified.

However, the city claims in their lawsuit that Edward made several verbal promises on behalf of himself and the Headlands, saying the Headlands would compensate Dana Point for any legal fees, costs or damages incurred by the city in its defense of the legal and administrative claims created by the project.

Edward said he never made any verbal agreements and believes the allegations will get thrown out by a judge. The city declined to comment about whether the verbal agreement was recorded.

The city claims in their lawsuit that Headlands stopped paying legal costs after August 2015.

To that, Edward said in an email, “In September 2015, we discovered that the city had been systematically overbilling us

Measure H Approved

by California Coastal Commission THE LATEST: The California Coastal Commission (CCC) certified an amendment to codify Measure H in the Lantern District.

During the CCC meeting on Sept. 8, Commissioners agreed with the CCC executive director’s determination that the city’s Local Coastal Program Amendment (LCPA) was a minor amendment, and thus approved it, foregoing a lengthier review.

The executive director stated the amendment was minor because the proposed changes to the city’s implementing ordinances were consistent with, and adequate to carry out, the Land Use Plan component of the LCP. WHAT’S NEXT: The next step for the measure would be for the city to implement it.—KP

South Coast Water District to Participate in San Juan Basin Optimization Plan THE LATEST: South Coast Water District Directors voted in favor of participating in the first phase of the San Juan Basin Optimization Plan during its Sept. 8 meeting.

Phase one of the project installs three rubber dams in San Juan Creek and Trabuco Creek, which can be inflated and deflated to better capture storm water runoff. When inflated, the dams will allow the ground to have time to absorb the water into the underground basin. Downstream, water would be pumped from the underground basin and treated potentially by existing facilities.

The project has four phases in total, with the first phase costing $34 million, which includes planning, California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) work, permitting, design and construction.

The district approved to participate at a 20 percent financial stake, which equals $6.8 million.

WHAT’S NEXT: The schedule plans for design and permitting to begin in October 2016, with a final estimated finish date of August 2017.—KP

CUSD Board Approves Lighting Retrofit for High Schools THE LATEST: The Capistrano Unified School District’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously this week to approve a contract and energy conservation program for the district’s six high schools. The program’s first phase includes a lighting retrofit of the schools, which will begin later this fall.

The board held a public hearing on Wednesday and voted unanimously to approve an energy services contract with Schneider Electric, the district’s Prop 39 partner. Schneider Electric submitted an energy expenditure plan to the state back in June, which was approved later that month. The approved application resulted in the district receiving $2.49 million in funding, which will be used for a mostly external lighting retrofit of the district’s highest-cost centers—its high schools.

Marc Starkey of Schneider Electric said the company’s objectives for the program are to optimize and maximize the district’s Prop 39 funding, improve the learning environment and redirect as much of the district’s utility dollars back into the classroom as possible. He told the board that the external LED retrofit of the high schools will yield $227,000 in annual energy savings, or about 1.18 million kilowatt hours of energy—the equivalent of 261 tons of greenhouse gases.

WHAT’S NEXT: Starkey said installation of external LED lighting will begin at the high schools around mid-November.

SCWD is a five-member elected board of directors that oversees policy-making, financing, rate-setting, capital programs and long-term planning for water in Dana Point and neighboring towns.

Protecting our coastal environment is my top priority.

As SCWD Board Vice President, I’ve supported repair of aging infrastructure through costeffective solutions. Previous Boards had deferred maintenance that forced this Board to make necessary repairs for the reliability of our systems. I continue to support expansion of recycled water, which saves millions of gallons. Additionally, I support the continued study for responsible ocean desalination and the project having regional partners.

The SCWD’s “30-Acres” adjacent to San Juan Creek, has been a great source of income to help offset our rates. I will continue to support the beneficial use and upgrade of this property.

I am an Orange County native, Dana Point resident for over 40 years and a DHHS and CSULB alumnus. For over 10 years, I’ve served the community as Chairman, Surfrider Foundation South OC, devoting thousands of hours in educating, promoting responsible water management and protecting our coastal environment.

Bob Oakley, Retired Project Manager My name is Bob Oakley and I ask for your trust and vote for the position of SCWD Director. As a former business owner and Project Manager at a major public utility, I bring broad knowledge of the challenges faced by California’s water districts. I educated hundreds of elected officials about our state’s hydroelectric facilities including reservoirs, tunnels and infrastructure as well as renewable energy and Catalina’s Ocean Desalination facility.

Protecting the environment, increasing reliability and protecting water quality are my priorities. Aggressive efficiency measures, visionary strategic planning and strong focus on customer service will benefit ratepayers. I will make my policy decisions based on these priorities.

I advocate using renewable and low emission energy sources to power both new and existing facilities.

An earthquake affecting our imported water supply could leave us without adequate water for months. With only a seven-day supply of drinking water on hand, we will partner with other agencies and explore all options to ensure that we have the water we need.

Meeting future needs of the SCWD, my priorities of clean, affordable and reliable water depend on continued strong fiscal policies and sound management of our water resources.

Julie A. Simer, Attorney I first learned the critical importance of water to a community’s health and prosperity growing up in a tiny farming town in central Illinois. I still remember gathering with neighbors in church to pray for rain, since water supply frequently meant the difference between economic survival or devastation for most of our farm families.

The need to secure a safe and ample water supply in the SCWD service area is no less crucial than it was in that small Midwestern town, especially during this severe and unprecedented drought. My credentials and close to three decades of experience as a prosecutor, national health care lawyer, and public health professional will let me effectively navigate the confounding maze of governmental regulations and daunting array of technical challenges that will control and influence the hard choices SCWD directors will have to make in the coming years. I will also work hard to upgrade SCWD’s consumer experience so that ratepayers will receive water bills they can understand and will have improved access to service when they need it. Finally, I am eager to help de-mystify the many technical matters about water supply and wastewater disposal that only engineers can understand so that ordinary people may help their elected directors make the soundest policy decisions for all concerned. Luckily, we now have better options than simply to pray for the sky to open up, but we do need to make the best possible use of them.

Douglas Erdman, Civil Engineer Douglas Erdman is a longtime resident of Capistrano Beach and graduate of San Clemente High School and UC Irvine. He is a Registered Civil Engineer with over 24 years of profes-

sional experience, currently working for the city of Lake Forest as a Principal Civil Engineer in charge of the city’s Capital Improvement Program. Prior to this, Doug worked for seven years at city of Dana Point designing and constructing capital projects within the City.

Douglas was previously a Director at SCWD during the period of reorganization where several water and sewer agencies merged to form the district that exists today. Why I’m running for SCWD: I want SCWD to be an effective, efficient and reliable water/wastewater utility that listens to what customers want. That means a clear and straightforward focus on water and wastewater issues with particular attention to local partnership opportunities. District rates are on the rise and I’m concerned about the District’s current capital project list that seems bigger than this community needs or can afford. I will use my local knowledge and engineering problem solving skills to guide the District to practices and policies that make sense, provide reliability and keep rates in check.

Meet the Candidates: Bill Brough and Mesbah Islam

B

ill Brough, the Republican incumbent candidate for California’s 73rd Assembly District, served on the Dana Point City Council from 2010-2014.

Prior to that, he served in the U.S. Army from 1986-1991, and operated a government affairs consulting firm from 20052014, according to his campaign page.

Brough’s challenger is Mesbah Islam, a write-in candidate. The Dana Point Times reached out to the Democratic candidate and did get in contact with him initially.

However, after weeks of continuous emails and phone calls, Islam did not respond to set up an interview. Islam recently took down his campaign page on Facebook, and a spokesman for the Democratic Party of Orange County said they didn’t think Islam “was very serious about running anymore.”

We do know Islam is a resident of Mission Viejo, a young man and a Democrat.

His write-in campaign earned him 278 votes, or about .4 percent of Brough’s 74,568 votes.

But elections wait for nobody, and in the interest of fairness to Brough, who made time to visit with DP Times, we’ve assembled his answers to a variety of questions here. If Islam responds, we’ll run his answers online.

And though the state of his campaign may be in flux, Islam’s name will still appear on the ballot.

PROP 47 Dana Point Times asked Brough if he would do anything to alter Prop 47, which reduced punishments of certain crimes to citations in lieu of jail time.

“We had a series of fixes come through because we found out that things like the date-rape drug, stealing firearms or less than $950 were things that were missed in the proposition,” Brough said. “I think there were some unintended consequences that were missed when Prop 47 was passed.

“We had a series of bills to try to correct those, and as things come up… we’ll certainly look at legislation to fix that.”

Brough also said Prop 57, which is on this year’s ballot and would release people convicted of mostly nonviolent crimes, is something he hopes does not pass. He also said he would have to contemplate raising the state’s prison budget.

MARIJUANA DP Times asked about concerns Brough may have regarding the possibility of marijuana being legalized this year. Brough is the current vice chair of the Committee on Dana Point Times September 16-22, 2016

“I don’t think it’s a good thing,” he said.

“If a doctor thinks it will help someone, I have no problem with that. My big issue is if it’s legalized and gets into the hands of kids.”

Brough said, if the measure passes, he would like to tax both medicinal and recreational transactions and to craft regulation around the marijuana industry that would inhibit negative repercussions.

SOBER LIVING HOMES DP Times asked Brough what people may expect regarding sober living home regulation in the near future.

“I was a little concerned at the last town hall where the lawyer said that the courts are looking at everything that we say and can base their decisions off that,” he said.

“We’ve got a big epidemic with prescription drug use,” Brough said, adding that he wants to approach sober living as a “consumer-protection issue.” He said, “I’m going to get with the insurance (companies) and see what it is they offer, and maybe there’s a way to steer people toward a licensed facility rather than an unlicensed.”

Brough also said it’s difficult to find space in South Orange County to establish a larger sober living facility.

HOMELESSNESS DP Times asked Brough about what can be done to alleviate the increase in the homeless population.

“We have to have a community plan,” Brough said. “There’s actually money and programs out there, and the county is sitting on a bunch of mental health money, and I know they’re moving forward on that as a county problem. We just need to get that money out and the money needs to go to the homeless veterans and the support groups who are helping.”

EPILOGUE At the end of the interview, DP Times asked Brough why he thinks his only opponent is a write-in and how his constituents view him now. He said because of his work on the hospital issues and MelloRoos bills, he hasn’t had to “take (his) foot off the gas.”

Brough said he intends to be very active in the Legislature this year regarding the issues that face South Orange County and California. He also said he intends to continue studying the developments of desalination plants in the area.

I am always surprised when someone chooses litigation over mediation. Litigation is expensive and time-consuming. Sadly, there are never any winners. The cost of time and money apparently wasn’t an issue for the city of Dana Point when deciding to sue Strand developer Sanford Edward, and separately, sue Headlands Reserve, LLC instead of mediate because the taxpayers are the ones stuck with the bill. Wasteful spending seems to be the order of the day in federal government but I never expected it to trickle down to Dana Point. I urge the city to do the right thing and mediate with the developer, not litigate.

APPLAUDING CITY STAFF Timothy Moore, Dana Point

I am a 17-year resident of Dana Point. I sent a note to the Dana Point City Council on Sept. 1 in opposition to Ordinance 538 (short-term rentals) and Coastal Commission sovereignty in Dana Point matters.

Then I attended the City Council meeting at the community center on Sept. 6.

I listened to the city’s presentation on the model ordinance that has been in effect since 2014, the role of the dreaded Coastal Commission, the number of permits issued so far, the revenues our city and our local businesses derive from the short-term residents, the relatively few complaints and the testimony of the seemingly competent enforcement officer employed by Dana Point. I stand corrected.

The Dana Point city staff is to be commended for their management of the entire issue of short-term rentals over the past few years.

The Dana Point City Council is to be commended for doing the right thing in passing the ordinance.

I apologize to the Council and city staff if my uninformed and ill-advised note of Sept. 1 caused any problem.

MONEY TALKS Wayne Via, Dana Point

At the Dana Point City Council meeting last Tuesday, it was very evident that, in Dana Point, money talks. The local rental organizations did a good job of turning out the rental community. Speaker after speaker extolled the advantages of shortterm rentals. I was especially touched by the young family, who sadly would no longer be able to take those expensive vacations abroad if they couldn’t rent their house while they were away. us about the thousands of tax dollars their rentals brought in, and how much money all those guests must be spending at local businesses. The City Council agreed. In their summation, they emphasized the importance of each owner’s right to make money on their property. There was no mention at all of the deteriorating quality of life of those who live around those rental properties. After the meeting, I left thinking that money had won and I would at least reap the advantages of living in a well-funded city.

Saturday, my wife and I decided to enjoy our favorite free event in Dana Point, the Tall Ships Festival. We parked the car and walked to the festival. We were immediately greeted by a chain link fence, and an admission gate demanding $10 to enter. I know the event is sponsored by the Ocean Institute, but the city government sets the tone for the community. When the almighty dollar becomes more important than quality of life, the people who chose Dana Point because it was a great place to live will soon be replaced by those who buy houses in Dana Point because it’s a great place to make a buck.

LITIGATION DOES NOT LOOK PROMISING Tristan Krogius, Dana Point

Having resided in what is now the city of Dana Point for almost a half century, I vividly recall when the Headlands was a fenced, rundown, dilapidated, vacant property with no parks or public access.

I was among those who welcomed Sanford Edward’s arrival two decades ago with his mission to establish a magnificent and environmentally sensitive development on the Headlands, which would include beautiful public parks and open space. This he has done through remarkable creativity and incredible perseverance, and I marvel at his accomplishment knowing how prone developers are to being pilloried by the populace and by politicians. The Headlands development would, nevertheless, not have been possible without the support of the city. Therefore, I find it ironic that now the city is apparently unwilling to sit down and negotiate or mediate a fair settlement in a dispute over legal fees and instead have responded by filing suit against Edward, which will only incur further legal costs.

The city does not have a good track record in litigation, and this does not look like a very promising venture for Dana Point— likely one that will only enrich the lawyers, with hundreds of thousands of dollars in cost to the taxpayers. The Headlands, LLC has already paid the city over $1.5 million for legal actions challenging their permits and have presented evidence they have been over-billed and are due a refund. Outside counsel has been retained by the city, reportedly at $800 per hour. It is hoped that

rational minds will prevail and the city will agree to mediate rather than litigate.

There they go again. This time, instead of creating a competing ballot measure to block Measure H, Dana Point City Council disenfranchised voters entirely, approving Ordinance 5.38 to allow vacation rentals as short as two days anywhere in Dana Point. Worse, they ceded authority to the California Coastal Commission for approval of any future amendments affecting proliferation.

In a last minute move, after residents voiced concerns at the August 16 meeting, Council moved the meeting to Sept. 6 (the day after Labor Day) instead of Sept. 20, as previously posted. Opponents learned, too late, that the city sent email notices to all STR permit holders on August 17 to advise them of the meeting change and suggest they write letters and attend the meeting. No such personal notice was sent to known opponents.

Ignoring impassioned pleas from citizens wanting to preserve the quiet enjoyment of their homes, Council bowed to four hours of rosy portrayals of shortterm vacation rentals (STRs) by owners, their customers, agents and even their kids. Councilmen Schoeffel and Olvera, who leave Council in November, and Mayor Tomlinson of severely impacted Capistrano Beach, voted to favor special interests (including non-resident investors) representing less than 1 percent of property owners.

Unless you have an HOA or CC&Rs prohibiting STRs, your formerly residential neighborhood is now open to revolving vacation rentals as short as two days.

There are no restrictions on the number of businesses on a given street, no buffers between them, and no protections for long term renters. While proponents cited an unbelievable “five nuisance reports in five years”, one resident from Beach Road told of 600 documented calls to security in one year, for 40 rentals. Police admitted that data on nuisance calls is not tracked separately for STR properties.

Time will tell whether investors will crowd to Dana Point, now the only local coastal town that has allowed unrestricted STRs. One sure thing is that the Coastal Commission is thrilled with Dana Point’s “model ordinance.” They should be. Council put them in charge.

At the Movies: ‘Sully’ Flies to No. 1

I

n a year when producers and studios are having trouble selling films based on star quality, Hollywood vets Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks release Sully with ease. These two, along with Laura Linney, are the only big names attached to the movie, and that’s all it took for the film to fly to No. 1 at the box office. On top of that, the film is actually quite a surprise in that they made an intriguing film out of what seemed like a puzzling film choice.

In January 2009, Cpt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger (Hanks) and co-pilot Jeff Skiles (Aaron Eckhart) have their plane struck by stray birds, right as their commercial flight takes off and suddenly their engines are shot. Sullenberger instantly makes the risky decision to land on water in the Hudson River. History deems the

incident “miraculous,” and everyone is saved, but Sullenberger and Skiles are shaken up mentally.

Linney plays Mrs. Sullenberger back home, and Mike O’Malley and Anna Gunn play members of the National Transportation Safety Board who aren’t convinced Sullenberger made the right decision.

These days, when filmmakers find it necessary to hit a two-hour runtime, Sully is only 90 minutes long and gets everything that needs to be said and shown in that time. Many have compared the feature to Robert Zemeckis’ Flight (2012), but Eastwood’s direction is actually more consistent here and uses nonlinear structure to show Sully’s trauma and reluctance to be labeled a hero. Hanks is the usual likable lead we’re used to seeing him, and Eastwood also makes appropriate use of a subtle and quiet score. DP

Football is back, and the return of our de facto national pastime brings the rekindling of our collective love affair with finger foods. Nowhere was that more evident than at The Point this past Sunday.

Lumpia. Photo: Matt Cortina The rainbow of football jerseys indicated a United Nations of NFL fanhood—together, we could’ve solved the concussion crisis and incidentally worked out a new collective bargaining agreement. Instead, we yelled and stuffed our faces.

The best of the finger foods was lumpia: crunchy Filipino egg rolls stuffed with pork, water chestnuts, carrots, soy and green onion with a side of sweet, goopy sauce. The thin sheath of crispy pastry on the outside was an ideal vessel—though seemingly constricting, the flavor of the filling was robust, balanced and warm. The side salad deceived too, as the mandarin orange and punchy ginger dressing belied the salad’s appearance as a garnish.

In short, the lumpia plate was more than finger food—it was the kind of dish that makes you wonder why there aren’t Filipino restaurants in every town.

Relay for Life: Participants Share their Connection to Cancer via the Annual Event

S

itting at a picnic table at Lantern Bay Park, two women with personal experiences with cancer recalled their Relay for Life journeys.

Rachel Alonzo, a former Dana Point resident, has been involved with Relay for Life since 2005 when a friend walked in her honor. At the time, Alonzo was going through recovery.

“Someone walked the full 24 hours on my behalf while I was recovering,” Alonzo said.

“So because they had done that for me, I felt that I had to attend to see what it was about.”

When she attended the event, she was invited to walk the survivor lap, and was given a beaded necklace.

“She asked me how many years since I was diagnosed, and I told her it had almost been a year,” Alonzo said. “She said, ‘That’s OK, you’re almost at a year,’ and she put the necklace on me and it made such an impression.”

Alonzo said for the rest of the event, she walked around and noticed people wearing the beads. She began to count how many each person had; how many years since their initial diagnoses.

“I saw a man with five necklaces on and thought, ‘Man, that’s so cool. They have five.’ Some people had 30 on, and they were so happy to show how fortunate they were, and that gave me hope,” Alonzo said.

Across the table from Alonzo was Sue Ervin, a San Juan Capistrano resident, who lost her husband to cancer this past year.

But, she had been involved with Relay because of another family member before her husband was diagnosed.

“I got involved five years ago. I had no idea what it was, but it was amazing,” Ervin said. “There was so much support and a lot of community involvement.”

Ervin’s team gives out a lanyard for a $5

donation and every time someone walks a lap and visits the booth, they can grab a bead. She recalled when local students attended one Relay, one of the girls had amassed a string of more than 100 beads.

“It was taller than her,” Ervin said smiling.

Ervin said she doesn’t walk as many laps now, but she always keeps the beads as a reminder.

Both women say the event brings celebration to those who have survived and remembrance to those who have died from cancer.

Alonzo said it’s nice to see who attends the annual event and to hear everyone’s stories. The women know not everyone likes to share their stories, but said Relay brings everyone together.

“We all know there’s a connection with each other because of cancer,” Alonzo said.

Ervin agreed and added that because of this, people know they’re not alone.

THE EVENT: Relay for Life begins Saturday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. and will continue to Sunday, Sept. 18 at 10 a.m.

Throughout the day, survivors, families and friends will walk around the park and help raise funds and awareness. There will be designated laps for care givers and survivors as well as a luminaria ceremony, an opening ceremony and a closing ceremony.

There will also be vendor booths, music and entertainment and food from various restaurants in the city.

Anyone can participate in the event by signing up online, or registering the day of the event. Donations can also be made online at www.relayforlife.com.

Parking will be available at the Dana Point Community Center and a shuttle will run back and forth for those interested in parking there.

The Dating Challenges Many Mature Women Face Nowadays

I

n my most recent column, I featured Brenda, a widow, 68, who had soured on men and the overall dating scene for women age 60-plus.

In the article, I suggested she soften her opinion regarding the single men she is meeting, which brought some eyeopening responses from single women.

Joan said, “Your advice is generally very helpful but you can’t possibly see the reality of the dating world from the eyes ON LIFE AND of a 68-year-old woman. I LOVE AFTER 50 am generally an optimist

“However, I am also a realist, and what I have concluded is that finding a decent compatible man over 65 is a case of a needle in a haystack. I haven’t given up yet at 67 but my eyes are seeing more clearly what the truth is.”

Joan is right. I cannot see the world through the eyes of a 68-year-old woman.

Nor through the eyes of any age 60-plus

single man or woman who has lost a spouse or a loved one later in life. I can only try to understand and be compassionate.

An email from Ann, 70, described the dating challenges she faces.

Ann said, “I was widowed eight years ago. After about a year, I decided that I could lessen my grief if I had a male friend. I decided to try a couple of online dating sites. I found the men to be rude.

One widower said his wife had received a prestigious award from the governor. Was I of that caliber?

“Another man sent me messages (even after) I told him he was too young. He was at least 20 years younger and apparently a member of a traveling rock band.

“Another man made himself available for conversing only at 6 a.m. His ‘story’ was that he was married, but his wife was disabled. He asked in his emails, ‘Do you dye your hair? Do you wear a lot of makeup?’

“I did go out with one man who was very nice, but married. Obviously, I ended that.”

Ann stated she did volunteer work, took master gardening classes and joined a gardening group, but not one available man

showed an interest in her at these events.

She added, “I admit I am an introvert, but I have accepted that in myself, and like that about myself, and a man would have to accept that in me as well.

“I am reasonably attractive and not overweight. I don’t smoke, and I rarely drink, although I am not judgmental about these habits in others.

“I have limited my social activities now.

I walk my dog in the park often, and I see men my age there walking their dogs or just walking for exercise. I’m sure some of them are married, but some of them must be single. I smile at everyone I walk near, but only one man has stopped to talk briefly.

“I am not looking for a man with money to support me. I also am not looking for a husband. I am looking for a friend, a man to be friendly and nonjudgmental.

“Tom, don’t advise me to get out more and be more outgoing. I am who I am.

Realize that women my age do not want to spend all their time knitting and making casseroles for church potlucks. We still want a relationship, and we still want sex.

The ‘invisible woman syndrome’ is not a myth. It is a very painful reality.” I empathize with Joan and Ann and the dating challenges they face as mature women.

Tall Ships Sail through Dana Point during Annual Festival

hroughout the weekend, historical ships sailed through the Dana Point Harbor to celebrate the state’s maritime history.

The festival kicked off with the Sunset Parade Sails, where ships such as The Brig Pilgrim, The Spirit of Dana Point, The Bill of Rights, the Californian, The Curlew, The Exy Johnson and The Irving Johnson put up their Dana Point Times September 16-22, 2016

sails and took a cruise in the harbor.

Over Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10-11, there were mock cannon battles, visits with mermaids and pirates, ship tours and more.

The annual event is hosted by the Ocean Institute and proceeds help benefit the educational programs the Institute provides to students.

Pacifica Proves to be Too Much for Dolphins in Homecoming Game

Despite producing its highest point total in 12 games, the Dana Hills football team could not match up to the firepower visiting Pacifica brought with it on the Dolphins’ homecoming night. The Mariners (1-2) used a balanced attack to push past the Dolphins (0-3), 49-31 on Sept. 9.

Pacifica running back Raul Balderas scored twice on two-yard touchdown runs in the first quarter to take an early lead.

Dana Hills’ Jake Baldiviez capped off a scoring drive for the Dolphins less than one minute into the second quarter to make it 14-7, but every time the home team found pay dirt, Pacifica responded.

Following a touchdown run by quarterback Ben Jefferson and a 36-yard touchdown pass from Jefferson to Matt Moslenko, Pacifica held a comfortable 28-7 lead. Pacifica led 42-17 heading into the fourth quarter.

Although it was a losing effort, the Dolphins had their most productive offensive game of the season. Baldiviez led all rushers with 162 yards. Senior receiver Ryder Lynch hauled in four catches for 77 yards and a touchdown and junior Gavin Pappagalo caught a team-high nine passes for 111 yards and a score. Quarterback Corey Cisowski completed 19 of 39 passes for 236 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Dana Hills will get another chance to pick up that elusive first win on Sept. 16, when they travel to play Santa Monica (12) out of the Ocean League. Santa Monica is led by junior running back Tony Dancy, who is averaging 118 yards per game and has scored five touchdowns. Santa Monica heads into the matchup fresh off a 34-14 nonleague win over Compton last week.

Water Polo Takes Fourth at Santa Barbara Tourney

The Dana Hills boys water polo team started its run through the high-profile Santa Barbara Invitational with three straight wins over quality teams. The Dolphins swept aside St. Xavier of Cincinnati, host team Santa Barbara and Righetti, respectively, in pool play. The Dana Hills girls volleyball team started its season off with a bang, defeating rival San Clemente in a nonleague game on Aug. 30. Since then, the Dolphins have been on a roll. Dana Hills (7-3) won three straight nonleague matches before heading into the high-profile Dave Mohs Tournament at Edison High School last weekend.

Dana Hills opened the tournament with two-set sweeps over Santa Barba and Crescenta Valley in pool play. The Dolphins lost to Edison 2-1 in pool play, but advanced to the Division 1 Championship bracket.

In the first round of the bracket, Dana Hills lost a close match to HarvardWestlake, 2-1. The Dolphins dropped the first set 25-14, won the second 25-18, and narrowly lost the third 15-11.

Dana Hills was set to travel to play Woodbridge in a nonleague game on Sept.

15. Results were not available at press time. The Dolphins will open Sea View League play on the road against Mission Viejo on Sept. 21.

Tennis Team Handed First Loss of Season

The Dana Hills girls tennis team finally felt the sting of defeat after starting the season off on a four-game win streak. The Dolphins lost a nonleague match against University on Sept. 13, 12-6.

But the Dolphins’ momentum was only slowed for moment. On Sept. 14, Dana Hills defated Mira Costa in a nonleague match 12-6 to improve to 5-1 on the season. Emilia Gorcyzca and Tatum Phillips won all three of their doubles sets against Mira Costa, as did the tandem of Drae Fresenius and Caroline Halloran. DP Jake Baldiviez ran for a team-high 161 yards and a touchdown in the Dolphins’ loss to Pacifica on Sept. 9.

The loss put Dana Hills in the tournament’s third-place game, but the Dolphins dropped their second straight, an 8-5 loss at the hands of Sir Francis Drake, to close out their tournament run.

Seniors Jack McLaughlin and Kai Hanson had productive tournaments.

McLaughlin scored 13 goals, including a five-goal effort against St. Xavier. Hanson scored eight during the tournament and a five-goal game of his own in the Dolphins 14-13 win over Santa Barbara.

Up next for Dana Hills (3-3) is a matchup with rival El Toro. The Chargers battled the Dolphins for the South Coast League title last season, and the two are poised to challenge each other for the championship yet again.

Girls Golf Earns Important Win Over Tritons

The Dana Hills girls golf team picked a good time to post its lowest score of the season. On Sept. 13, playing host to defending South Coast League champion San Clemente, Dana Hills fired off its lowest score to-date in a 208-216 victory.

Dana Hills (4-2) and San Clemente were scheduled to play again on the Tritons home course, Bella Collina Golf Club, on Sept. 15. Results were not available at press time.

OBITUARY

Harold Loyd Dunegan

(1931-2016) Harold Loyd Dunegan, a former resident of Orange County, born in Eufaula, OK on Feb 25, 1931 passed away on July 3, 2016 in Midland, TX. He was 85.

After high school, he enlisted in the US Coast Guard and was honorably discharged in 1954. Mr. Dunegan received his BS degree in Materials Science in 1961 from San Jose State College, and was hired by the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Livermore, CA. His work there led him to his lifetime vocation of studying the science of acoustic emission (AE). He ultimately became a respected worldwide leader in the field.

“Hal” eventually formed his own company to design and manufacture AE systems. This company; Dunegan Corporation, was ultimately purchased by Endevco of San Juan Capistrano.

Known worldwide as an innovator, pioneer and champion of the technology, there were many other unique components to his life. He was a musician, a cattle rancher and a yachtsman in the beautiful waters off Dana Point. And he never lost sight of the importance of family.

Mr. Dunegan is survived by his wife Alice, and daughters Kathleen Poor and Lizann Dunegan.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego on September 21, 2016 at 2:00 PM. Dana Point Times September 16–22, 2016

What’s Trestles Worth?

With the Hurley Pro in town, the value of Lowers is evident in so many ways

hat’s a surf spot worth? If you live around San Clemente or Dana Point, you know your local break’s worth quite a bit. From San Onofre to Salt Creek, we raise our kids on the sand, enjoying the sunny lifestyle while creating memories to last a lifetime.

A child’s first wave, the first time they glide and trim down the line, their first contest trophy—it’s all priceless stuff. But there’s also a significant financial perk to having a world-class surf spot in your backyard.

This week, the World Surf League’s Hurley Pro has been in town, which means not only have we had a chance to cheer on hometown heroes Tanner Gudauskas and Kolohe Andino, but the power of the surf business has been in full bloom. The world’s best surfers and their entourages are staying in local hotels, booking neighborhood vacation rentals, shopping in area boutiques and sampling the myriad culinary delights.

Not only that, so are their fans. And that’s where the real money is.

The average visitor to Trestles spends between $80 and $138, according to a 2012 Surfrider Foundation study by Chad Nelsen, with approximately 330,000 surfers from around the world heeding the call of the cobblestones every year. The estimated annual revenue generated from Trestles is approximately $26 million. So to the salty guy down at Lowers complaining about the “pros taking over,” there is an upside.

In fact, after polling over 5,000 surfers, Nelsen’s study found that there are about 3.3

icking off her National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) campaign with a little pop and sizzle, San Clemente’s Kirra Pinkerton got busy up in Surf City last weekend. Notching wins in both the Women’s and Girl’s divisions, she came away with a statement-making double win in some very trying conditions on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

“Super stoked to take home double wins,” said Pinkerton. “[I] broke out a fin and had mix and match fins, but that didn’t stop me.”

million people in the United States that surf.

And they surf a lot. They surf on average 108 days a year, drive an average of 10 miles per session and contribute an estimated $2 billion to the U.S. economy annually.

When one considers that Trestles makes up $26 million of that number, it reveals just how valuable a resource it is. For comparison, it’s estimated that Maverick’s brings close to $24 million into Half Moon Bay every year, and in 2016, it was reported that the Superbank on the Gold Coast of Australia brought approximately $15 million into the Gold Coast community.

With the Hurley Pro grinding through heats on Friday afternoon—while wildcard Gudauskas was upsetting world champion Gabriel Medina in Round 3 of the contest— the shops up and down El Camino Real and Del Mar in San Clemente enjoyed brisk business. As the west wind blew, it had the feel of a busy summer weekend, but instead it was 1 p.m. on a weekday afternoon.

“It’s like a trade show around here,” After the year she’s had, a busted fin and some onshore wind shouldn’t be too much to contend with. Making the jump to the World Surf League’s Qualifying and Pro Junior series, competing against women considerably older and more seasoned, Pinkerton made the semifinals at the Shoe City Pro in Huntington to start the year off. Then in March, she took her act back east to the Ron Jon Van Pro Junior in Cocoa Beach, Florida (hometown to 11-time world champion Kelly Slater), where again she made the semis.

Over the summer, Pinkerton competed in Mexico and El Salvador, before landing in the semifinals of the Van U.S. Open of Surfing Pro Junior. Currently ranked 59th in the world, to say the 13-year-old is on her way is an understatement. DP

“It’s so good to come to town and see old mates, watch some great surfing and soak it all in,” said Andy King, Drummy’s lunch date and the head coach of the Australian national surf team. “It’s a pretty special little corner of the world.”

With room to sleep seven, an international conglomeration of surfers, photographers, videographers and manager types called it home for the duration of the contest’s twoweek waiting period.

“We try and stay in this place every year.

It’s comfortable, and it’s quiet,” described women’s world champion Carissa Moore of her accommodations.

Besides just the fans and competitors, the entire event production crew has to be put up in town, which constitutes a small

army. On average, it costs about $3 million to produce a world tour contest, and that number’s probably closer to $5 million when it comes to a combined event with men and women. All of the personnel, from judges, to on-air talent, to administrative staff, need a roof over their heads and food in their bellies. Never mind all of the equipment and gear that needs to be rented, as well as local hired help.

“We’re down here all day long, making sure folks are safe and everybody’s taken care of,” noted one of the seasonal lifeguards. “When summer ends, I have to work another job, so I’ll definitely take as many hours down here as I can.”

The Hurley Pro is one of the biggest events in San Clemente all year long.

Thousands deal with the traffic and parking to make their trek to the shore. Online, the contest draws millions of eyeballs to its hours and hours of live webcasting, promoting not only the talent of the surfers, but also the splendor of the area. DP
