Five things Dana Point should know this week Planning Commission Sends Strands Gate Recommendation to Council THE LATEST: The Dana Point Planning Commission is recommending the City Council approve a zone text amendment that would allow the use of fully retractable gates in the Strand community.

The amendment would permit the use of retractable gates at the mid-strand beach access point, the central strand upper access point and the central strand lower access point.

The commission voted 5-0 in favor of sending the recommendation to the Council during the public hearing on July 25.

“I think that these gates are a good balance,” said Commissioner April O’Connor.

“There are two trails which are 24-hour access [points.]”

Kevin Darnall, President of the Strand’s homeowner association, told the commission the Strand association supports the amendment because there has been vandalism and residents have called the police multiple times.

O’Connor said she believes the addition of the gates would be a way to protect the residents and property and increase public safety.

In April 2016, Coastal Commission staff recommended a settlement agreement, which put an end to six years of litigation over the gates and closing hours. The settlement included an agreement to modify the local coastal development program to include the approval of designated hours of operations for the access areas.

WHAT’S NEXT: Since it requires a change of city law, the amendment needs City Council approval. If the City Council approves the amendment, it will then go to the California Coastal Commission for approval. —Kristina Pritchett

that they’re operating in compliance with state law.

In June, the city filed two lawsuits against two properties—Capo by the Sea and Sobertec LLC, along with others named as the defendants—that the city says are operating in violation of applicable licensing laws, engaging in unlawful business practices and have become public nuisances.

City officials said they conducted an investigation and based on evidence collected concluded the sober living homes were providing counseling services which state law requires a license for.

“The city has concluded that these homes are an integral part of the licensed recovery facilities in question, providing the residential component of an overall treatment plan and that as such they must either be covered by the recovery centers’ licenses or have their own licenses,” a statement from the city reads.

Recently, city officials stated they will offer the defendants time to present evidence to support their position.

“It is important to recognize the city could not compel the defendants to provide information during its investigation,” city officials said.

One of the defendants in the case with Sobertec LLC is Sovereign Health Group.

Seth Zajac, General Counsel for Sovereign Health, said the city’s legal actions are unjustified.

“Unwarranted legal actions, like the one initiated by the City of Dana Point, leave Sovereign Health with no choice but to take any and all legal actions to defend our patients’ rights to receive care,” Zajac said.

“What is worse is that the resources Sov-

ereign Health must use to defend these rights in court could be put to far better use to treat our patients.”

He added that Sovereign Health operates all of their treatment facilities and resident housing in full compliance with state regulations.

“If cities like Dana Point are unhappy with the way the state of California licenses treatment facilities or regulates resident housing, they should address those issues with the appropriate licensing agencies and the state legislature,” Zajac said in a statement. “If they are unhappy with the fact that mental health and addiction patients are protected by federal statutes like the Fair Housing Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act, they should take that up with Congress.”

City officials said if they do not receive evidence that shows the facilities are in full compliance, they will move forward with the lawsuits. —KP

Dana Point’s National Night Out Set for Aug. 2 THE LATEST: Dana Point’s second annual National Night Out event is scheduled for August 2 with hopes of bringing the community and members of the local police force together.

“National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live,” said Jill Jackson, Crime Prevention Specialist with Dana Point Police Services.

City Council OKs Public Meetings to Discuss Doheny Village Parking THE LATEST: On July 19, City Council members voted to hold public meetings with city residents to discuss and gain input on the proposed parking standards in Doheny Village.

Councilman Joe Muller pulled the update from the consent calendar to discuss his concerns with what he referred to as “aggressive” parking in Doheny Village.

Muller said he believes the city should take a pause, and reach back out to the community to see what their concerns and wants are for the project to ensure another situation like Measure H doesn’t happen.

Council members have mentioned residents have expressed concerns regarding the parking standards, specifically whether there would be an impact if the parking standards were increased.

Mosquitoes Test Positive for West Nile in Dana Point THE LATEST: The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District has confirmed the first mosquito samples infected with West Nile virus in Dana Point for 2016.

The mosquitoes were collected in a trap on Quail Run, according to a statement from the Vector Control District.

Locals Awarded Highest Sea Scouting Rank

The board of directors for Visit Dana Point recently announced the appointment of Sean Keliiholokai as Executive Director for the destination marketing organization.

Keliiholokai will start in the position in mid-August and will be in charge of growing the local tourism industry through visitor attraction and retention, lodging offerings and group initiatives.

Previously, he was the Director of Sales and Marketing for the Greater Ontario Convention and Visitors Bureau. He has worked for Hyatt Regency Orange County, Marriott International and Disneyland Resort.

Keliiholokai is a certified hospitality Sales Professional and holds a Masters of Hospitality Administration from the University of Nevada, and a B.S. in Business Administration from Biola University.

Recently, two Dana Point’s Mariners 936 Sea Scouts were awarded the sea scouting’s highest honor.

Dana Point resident Jessica Huber and Laguna Nigel resident Ryan Clark were awarded the Quartermaster rank.

The award is earned through various requirements that demonstrate knowledge of maritime skills and serving in leadership positions within the ship. Both Huber and Clark had to move up through the Sea Scout ranks, learning skills in seamanship.

Both Clark and Huber will attend the California Maritime Academy in the fall.

Dana Hills Students Named Top Winners of Art Competition More than 100 submissions were made for the Dana Hills High School and Prado West Art Competition, and three students were named the top winners.

Maddie Conrad took home first place with her entry in the Faces of Dana Point theme, and won a $500 scholarship.

Hannah Scott was first runner-up and won a $300 scholarship with her piece in the Faces of Dana Point theme, and Costa B. Pappas was second runner-up and won a $200 scholarship with his piece in the Lanterns in the Lantern District theme.

Dana Hills High School students participated in the art competition as part of a beautification project along Pacific Coast Highway in the Lantern District. There were two themes, Lanterns in the Lantern District and Faces of Dana Point. Twentyfour finalists were selected from more than 100 submissions. Letters to the Editor DANA POINT TOWN CENTER AND DOHENY VILLAGE PARKING SUGGESTIONS CINDY FLEMING, Dana Point

Parking is a topic at nearly every Dana Point City Council meeting. It was very instrumental in the creation of Measure H and remains a concern. The passage of Measure H increased the number of parking spaces required by Dana Point Town Center businesses and restaurants to pre-September 2015 numbers, but did not provide a solution to the parking issues.

As the Doheny Village Plan is being created it faces the same parking issues as the Town Center Plan. Can a walkable, pedestrian-friendly village that attracts customers and invites them to stroll and linger also provide adequate nearby parking? Does the requirement for restaurants and businesses to provide parking for their employees and customers increase the cost to the point that it is economically unfeasible to build, own and operate in these areas?

Dana Point is not breaking new ground by creating villages within the city; this has been successfully accomplished dozens of time in other cities, but Dana Point does face the additional challenge of trying to do this in areas with Coastal Commission jurisdiction.

A walkable, pedestrian-friendly village with adequate parking for employees and customers is possible. Eliminating parking beside restaurants and shops removes the need for cars to cross the sidewalks and allows buildings to be located closer together.

By providing a limited number of on-site spaces, under or behind the business, and providing the complement of required spaces at a shared public parking facility, the land use is improved, the per-space parking cost is reduced and customers can park once and enjoy eating and shopping at several businesses. The key is providing the shared public parking facility and making it attractive for shops and restaurants to locate nearby.

Restaurants, retail shops and businesses cannot operate in the Dana Point area without providing parking for their employees and customers.

Even adding multi-tenant residences within these areas will not significantly reduce the parking needs. Limiting the number of on-site parking spaces and providing parking at a central parking facility makes for far better use of the land reducing land-cost per customer. The per-space cost of a central facility should be less than on-site parking facilities because of scale and because the number of entrances is greatly reduced.

Each development will require an economic analysis, but business success requires parking and central parking improves land utilization and reduces per-space cost, both of which contribute to the bottom line.

Traffic, parking and noise are the primary concerns of nearby residents when an adjacent commercial area is developed. If the traffic from the commercial area does not pass through the residential neighborhoods, and adequate convenient parking is provided within the commercial areas, the negative impact on the surrounding residential neighborhoods should be minimal.

Parking restrictions in the residential neighborhoods might be necessary to make them less convenient than the central parking, but adequate convenient central parking is the key. Commercial parking from the restau-

rants and other businesses in the Town Center is already encroaching into the adjacent residential neighborhoods and this problem will only get worse as the number as the businesses in the Town Center increase.

The residential neighborhood south of Del Prado to the bluff is in the Coastal Commission’s jurisdiction and parking rules that limit public access to the coast are not acceptable. However, all the parks in this area that provide views of or access to the coast are closed from 10 p.m.-6 a.m. so the Coastal Commission is likely to approve resident-only parking restriction during these hours. The residential neighborhood north of the PCH is not in Coastal Commission jurisdiction so more options are available but making more stringent restrictions in one neighborhood than the other will just force more of the encroachment from north of the PCH to south of Del Prado. Residentonly parking restrictions from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. in all the residential neighborhoods surrounding the Town Center will eliminate the late-night noise created by employees and customers parking in these neighborhoods.

These restrictions will also make it easier to enforce the closure of the parks/overlooks in these areas reducing vandalism and other nuisance factors.

The City of Dana Point has shown the right vision in the 2008 Town Center Plan and in starting on the Doheny Village Plan.

By working with all parties—residents, businesses, restaurants, developers and the Coastal Commission this vision can be realized. Let’s not get bogged down over issues that can be addressed!

Precious Metals Investment

D

oes the following advertisement appeal to you?

“Pure silver wildlife coins coveted by collectors everywhere, special introductory price of just $74.90.”

In case you haven’t noticed, the marketing of precious metals is a frantic exercise. Not an hour elapses that some talk radio host isn’t making a pitch for the “only precious metals firm he trusts.”

And you can’t ignore the full-hour infomercials where the anointed authority predicts the value of gold and silver to be headed for the sky, therefore you “must buy now while Dana Point Times July 29-August 4, 2016

it’s still a bargain.”

Let’s take a closer look at the ad. It’s a three-coin set, each containing an ounce of the highest quality, best struck and purest silver bullion in the world, which makes a “stunning collection, ideal for silver investors, coin collectors and gift buying.”

Perhaps the offering is suitable for gift buyers. Only a knowledgeable coin collector can determine its collection value. But we can easily calculate how this stacks up as a bullion investment. One the date of the ad, July 20, 2016, the world price of silver closed at $19.44 per ounce, so that the three ounces contained in the coins were worth $58.32.

At the “special introductory price of just $74.90,” a buyer is paying $16.58 more than actual value, a 28.43 percent premium. This is not the way to invest in silver bullion.

You might note that silver values pop up and down on an irregular basis. Back in February 1980, the price of an ounce topped out at $106.74. Fast forward a couple decades

to July 2001, you could only get $5.64 for the same ounce. As recently as March 2011, that ounce had risen to $40.18. Today it’s less than half that value. Where it will be heading over the next few years, who knows?

It’s clear that precious metals marketers are combing the bushes in search of gullible shoppers. Will they find enough of them to keep the charade going? To paraphrase that incomparable iconoclast H.L. Mencken, “No one ever went broke underestimating the naïvete of the American public.”

At the Movies: Pleasant Enough Company with ‘Café Society’

t’s sad and slightly humorous when a talented filmmaker grows a reputation for making more misses than hits after years of success—that when a new film of theirs comes out, you think “Well, it wasn’t terrible.” In Woody Allen’s case, his newest effort, Café Society, is decent, but not great either.

It’s no charmer like Midnight in Paris (2011), but not dull like Magic in the Moonlight (2014). Despite its silly title, Café Society has its moments.

(Jesse Eisenberg) moves to Hollywood, where his uncle Phil (Steve Carell) runs a movie studio, and quickly begins running odd jobs around town. Phil’s secretary Vonnie (Kristen Stewart) also becomes fast friends with Bobby, fitting his desire for a girlfriend. Back in Bobby’s home state, New York, his brother Ben (Corey Stoll) is attempting to replace his life of crime with owning a nightclub.

name dropping all the old Hollywood stars and directors, though it does get a bit redundant even if he’s aware of it. Eisenberg as the “Woody” character here is a predictable, obvious choice, but it works, while Stewart is the shocking highlight and doesn’t feel out of place in the era set. The two leads have a comfortable presence with each other, most likely because they’ve acted before together.

Café Society is a safe and basic by Allen’s standards, but still worthy of a lazy afternoon viewing. SC Page 8

uring the early 1960s, folk music was enjoying a revival in popularity, one that would launch the singer/ songwriter genre throughout the decade and spill over into the next generation.

About 50 years later, folk music once again made a meteoric rise, but this time it had help from artists who infused new technology, creating homey lyrics that weren’t afraid to chime in tandem with alternative rock, giving light to the Americana genre.

From San Clemente, the movement is joined by The Moon Police.

Brent William Samson, the drummer, said The Moon Police incorporate many different genres, including Americana, worldly inspiration and, in some cases, classic French stylings.

who is also a well-known painter. The group played a show together and realized they had a sound they could formulate into The Moon Police.

“After one song we decided to merge the band,” Samson said. “Shane, our bass player, came on board just in time to finish the album, The Lost Go Sailing By. Freeman, an 18-year-old singer/songwriter and San Clemente High School graduate, projects a soft but powerful voice across many of the album’s primary songs. They are accompanied by what the band puts together during impromptu rehearsals.

Samson said the band hopes to perform in larger venues in the future but has already booked a few local festivals.

Adversity Inspires San Clemente Woman to Write a Book

T

he underlying message in my previous article—opportunity often arises from adversity—struck a chord with several readers.

A San Clemente resident named Karen, who has had heavy adversity in her life, emailed a response that inspired me.

She wrote, “Your last article focusing on opportunity and adversity had an impact on me. I fit your over-50 profile.”

Karen married her college sweetheart the summer after they graduated in 1976. They had two ON LIFE AND LOVE AFTER 50 sons. She loved being a

She said, “My husband Mike climbed the corporate ladder. Our lifestyle got bigger and better. Then Mike was diagnosed with cancer at age 39 and was given three to four years to live. That was unacceptable to us. We’d heard about bone marrow transplantation and decided to go for it. So we swapped the death sentence for a life sentence.

“Mike’s goal was to help his young sons grow to manhood. He lived for 18 years after the transplant. He lost the career, so we swapped roles and I became the bread winner. Forget about feminism and the women’s movement; it was time for me to change gears and pay some bills.

“At age 56, I was widowed. I had two amazing sons, a promising career, good health and a tremendous desire to live my life to its fullest. I took care of myself, attended support groups, and eventually found myself leading them.

“After a few years, I had revved up the career, joined Match.com, gained two beautiful daughters-in-law, changed careers, joined networking groups, sold the house and moved to the beach. I had two

astounding grandbabies, traveled, dated some wonderful men, retired and got active in Toastmasters and Rotary. I worked my body and mind four to five times per week, gave motivational speeches, joined Meetup.com and cherished some unbelievable friends.”

Karen said her friends often told her she should write a book. But she balked— she felt people wouldn’t want to read about her sad story, even though she had overcome adversity.

“And then,” Karen said, “my older son, Donovan, died of cancer last summer at age 37. Adversity? I got it. Sometimes, I think I’m way overqualified in the adversity department.

“Your article, ‘In Life, Opportunity Often Arises from Adversity,’ made me think maybe I should write a book—not only for myself, but for others. I believe I have the passion and the ability to write. I was sitting in sunlight when I started this message. Now I’m in the dark.

“I could use some advice. Have you ever thought about mentoring someone?”

I responded to Karen: “Yes, you are ‘overqualified’ in the adversity department. My heart goes out to you, and your courage with what you have been through.

“Sometimes we don’t see the opportunity that arises until time has passed, and that is what is happening with you. It likely is time for you to write your book.

“You have walked the walk, losing both your husband and son. You are an expert on this topic. Writing can be cathartic and helpful to you and to others who have faced adversity or are doing so now. Plus, you are energetic and have a creative way with words.

“As far as mentoring you in writing, yes, I can help get you started in the right direction.”

She explained how that came about: “Last summer I was sitting in the street at a small-town parade with my 2-year-old grandson sitting in my lap. He was so darned excited to see another vehicle with flashing lights. Out of his beautiful mouth: ‘Nana, look at what’s coming!’ Yep, that’s the title: Look at What’s Coming.”

Reporter gets a chance to train alongside and learn from a childhood hero

aking my way from the parking lot into the campgrounds of Doheny State Beach, I struggled to keep a steady pace despite the excitement I felt knowing the experience that awaited me. Growing up in Orange County as an aspiring volleyball player, I learned at a young age a few names that would loom large. Among these names was one that has been spoken about often, especially as I began taking my own training and passion for the sport more seriously.

On this clear, warm July 21 morning, I was about to meet and work out with one of my childhood heroes, getting a glimpse into her journey through the sport that continues to bring her so much success.

Professional volleyball player Jen Kessy grew up in Dana Point, where she now resides and is raising a family of her own.

As part of a press junket for Milk Life, the company sponsoring the event, I had the chance to go enjoy Kessy’s favorite breakfast, participate in her typical morning workout routine and ask her a few questions about our favorite game.

When I first arrived at Doheny, I was in disbelief—I was looking at the same person that inspired me to chase my own dreams on the court.

I recently earned my college degree and finished my volleyball career at the University of Rhode Island. While being a student-athlete at a Division 1 school was a dream come true for me, I could not imagine how Kessy must feel every time she looks in the mirror and sees the champion looking back at her. After all, she has a silver medal in beach volleyball, which she won at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

I was one of four reporters that settled in to eat a fueling breakfast with Kessy that morning. She said her partnership with Milk Life was natural because milk has always been a crucial component in her diet.

It made sense to hear that the healthy habits she practices today have been engrained in her since she was a child.

Following our breakfast and inspiring conversation at the picnic tables, we made our way to the court, where Kessy, 38, took us through her yoga warm-up routine. Kessy said part of staying healthy revolves around nutrition, but a large part of it is also making sure muscles are ready for the strain athletes put on them. prone to performing.

Once everyone was warmed up, we started to complete a short workout in the sand. Kessy ran us through some endurance and coordination drills. Although it was just for fun and to experience a portion of a day in the life of an Olympic athlete, the other journalists and I felt winded after her standard warm up.

For me, the fun part came next, when we got out the volleyballs and started learning the basics of passing and serving skills.

I have not played volleyball since my senior season ended in the fall of 2015, so it felt like I was back at home when I stepped onto the court. The company I was in and the clear blue sky and ocean filled with surfers as our backdrop made it even better. That morning, I felt a sense of

relief that I will always be able to find joy in my love for the game, even though my competitive journey with it has come to an end much sooner than Kessy’s.

Following the workout, Kessy shared a few words of wisdom with me regarding her path to success and detailed a few of the inevitable trials she has faced along the way. Despite owning a silver medal and a FIVB World Championship gold medal, which she won in 2009, she still remembers the defeats that she has suffered.

“If you look at it from the outside maybe you think that I’ve accomplished all of these things that I’ve set out for, but it definitely hasn’t been easy,” Kessy said. “All of these things look awesome on paper, but it took a lot of work and it also took a lot of

disappointments. I think that’s why those (accomplishments) are so special, because it wasn’t easy and because I worked so hard for it. I really earned what I have.”

Kessy and her playing partner, Emily Day, were eying an Olympic bid in Rio this summer, but were narrowly edged out of a place on the USA team by Brooke Sweat and Lauren Fredrick. Kessy will continue to be a fixture on the Association of Volleyball Professionals Tour throughout 2016.

Her competitive spirit has clearly paved the way for much of her success, but she remains humble by remembering her roots. As a young girl, Kessy used to ride her bike to the Doheny volleyball courts to play and now uses them to train for professional volleyball tournaments that send her all over the world. She said the love for being outdoors that so many people in Dana Point share, coupled with the laidback atmosphere, make the area a special place. She looks forward to coming home after every long road trip.

Kessy has seen the game of volleyball develop into the high-profile sport that it is today, and she has evolved with it by keeping up with the training and nutritional demands. She no longer is the girl who would ride down to Doheny for pick-up games. Since turning professional, Kessy competes for a totally different reason, which is mainly to win. When speaking to her, I could feel the desire that burns inside of her to be successful even in the midst of a lengthy career.

“I love playing, but I love winning also.

So that’s where the fun comes in now.

Winning is everything,” Kessy said.

As a young girl, I absolutely glorified Kessy’s play, and I continue to admire the athlete that she is. In many ways, she’s a local success story that encouraged me to pursue my own dreams of playing at an elite level. DP www.danapointtimes.com

Shootout For Soldiers Coming to Dana Hills High School The California stop of the Shootout for Soldiers charity lacrosse exhibition will be held at Dana Hills High School from August 6-7.

The event, which aims to use the sport of lacrosse to engage communities across the nation with local military veterans, is a day-long, continuous lacrosse game that features dozens of local teams. Shootout for Soldiers has become famous for providing teams the chance to compete in one of 24 one-hour games.

One of the highlights of last year’s Shootout for Soldiers event in Dana Point was a game between active-duty soldiers and veterans. The event raised $23,975, which was added to the program’s nationwide total of $408,931 raised in 2015.

Proceeds raised at the event will directly benefit Shootout for Soldiers’ four national charities as well as two California-based charities, the United States Veterans Initiative and Team Rubicon.

Sharilyn (Sharie) Kay Varney

Sharilyn Kay Varney (Sharie) passed away on March 21, 2016 in Portland, Oregon. She was 78.

Sharie was born on June 11, 1937 to Dorothy Wilson and Loyd Jimmie O’Hara in Spencer, Iowa. She grew up in Spirit Lake, Iowa. She graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Des Moines, Iowa. She married Ralph Zollars, Jr. in December Dana Point Times July 29-August 4, 2016

On September 22, 1962, she married Nathan Varney in Garden Grove, CA. They had two children Michael and Thomas. In 1966, Sharie moved with her family to Dana Point, CA. She worked for the Capistrano Unified School District as a Health Tech.

She is preceded in death by both husbands, Ralph Zollars, Jr. and

Nathan Varney; and both of her parents, Dorothy Wilson and James O’Hara.

Sharie in survived by brother, Jim Boehm; her four children, Jollene (Hall), David, Michael and Thomas; and five grandchildren.

Shaire’s Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held on August 1, 1:30 pm, at Harbor Lawn Mortuary in Costa Mesa, CA. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her name to Autism Speaks.

t’s been an eventful week for competitive San Clemente surfers. As one local pro earned a wildcard spot for the September Hurley Pro Event, other San Clemente groms and seasoned surfers progressed through the Vans US Open of Surfing Men’s Qualifying Series and Pro Junior competitions.

Tanner Gudauskas, 28, of San Clemente won the local pro wildcard spot at the Hurley Pro Trials and will have a chance to compete in the Hurley Pro Championship Tour (CT) event at Lower Trestles. The trials for the wildcard spot took place in the morning and into the afternoon at T-Street on Wednesday, July 20.

“The camaraderie at the beach was awesome. I feel super stoked I get to represent that group (of locals),” Gudauskas said. “I couldn’t believe how everyone was surfing.”

The trials were split into two separate contests, one composed of Hurley team riders, and one for local pros, each group competing for one wildcard spot into the Hurley Pro CT event.

On the local side, Gudauskas and his brother, Patrick, along with Ian Crane, Griffin Colapinto, Nate Yeomans and Evan Geiselman were some of the San Clemente surfers who competed for the local wildcard spot.

hether he’s competing for a spot on the podium at a tournament in Hawaii or just riding the waves at Trestles, Nolan Senn loves to be in the surf line.

Nolan, 8, has been surfing since he was 4 years old. His father, Jason, is the coach and operator of the Endless Summer Surf Camp at San Onofre.

“I started learning with my dad, and he’s been helping me work on turns and airs,” Nolan said.

Last week he competed in a Huntington Beach tournament and placed fourth in his division at the Groms Rule competition at Ocean Festival on July 17.

He also competed in the Town and County Surf (T&C) in Hawaii earlier this year.

wildcard spot for his team and will compete with Gudauskas and other WSL CT surfers at the Hurley Pro. Gudauskas holds the No. 18 rank in the WSL Qualifying Series (QS), and is also competing in the Men’s US Open of Surfing this week.

He said the Vans US Open of Surfing is the highest rated QS event.

“That’s why we’re up here, to give it our best effort, before and after, and I’m really hoping to do well,” he said.

US Open Men’s Pro Junior and Men’s Events

Cole Houshmand of San Clemente had a strong start as he took first in both his heats in the Men’s Pro Junior Round 1 and Round 2. Houshmand won Round 2 by 3.40 points.

Round 3 took place on July 28.

ing is learning and getting better at his technique. He has surfed in New Zealand, Marshall Islands, Mexico, Brazil and Costa Rica.

Despite his passport being thoroughly stamped, he said his favorite spot to surf is still at his home break at Trestles with his friends.

His primary goals for the future are to be invited to the World Surf League like his favorite surfer, Gabriel Medina.

His mother, Elenice, said Nolan is very passionate about surfing, but he enjoys having fun with the sport more than he seeks to be competitive. Nolan’s parents were both professional surfers—Jason was on the San Clemente High School team and US National Surf team.

“He’s very passionate about it, and he’s a very good motivator to his friends and encourages everybody,” Elenice said. “The passion I see from him is about having fun more than being the best surfer. He’s very proud of his dad and wants to be like him.”

fin and Crosby Colapinto and Kade Matson finished strong in their heats during Rounds 1 and 2 of the Men’s Pro Junior event. Kobayashi, Griffin Colapinto and Cole Houshmand made it through Round 2 and into the quarter-finals, which were scheduled to take place on July 28. Results were not available at press time.

“The waves were super fun, but I’m just trying to keep that No. 1 seed going,” Kobayashi said after placing second in his Round 2 heat on July 24. “It’s pretty awesome to see the whole San Clemente crew doing well, and we’re all supporting each other.”

For the US Open Men’s event, Griffin Colapinto, Kolohe Andino, Tanner Gudauskas, Patrick Gudauskas and Nate Yeoman’s all punched their tickets into Round 3 with strong performances in the early rounds.

On July 28, Patrick Gudauskas and Andino were eliminated in the third round.
