Five things Dana Point should know this week Dana Point Library Hosts ‘Read to a Dog’ Program THE LATEST: The Dana Point Library had some four-legged visitors last week during a regular installment of their “Read to a Dog” program.

On Tuesday, March 21, three volunteers from the OCSPCA Paws program came to the library with their furry friends to sit by children as they read different books.

PAWS, or Pets Are Wonderful Support, is a pet-assisted therapy program that travels throughout Orange County. They visit nursing homes, hospitals, hospices, schools and libraries to bring joy and a calming atmosphere to those who may need it.

During the library’s event, three dogs—Coco, Sophie and Duke—sat with different groups of children while they read picture books, dog books and more.

Reading to the dogs helps kids with their reading skills and allows them to get comfortable around animals.

Traffic Calming Project Construction Begins in Capo Beach THE LATEST: Construction on the traffic calming project along Camino Capistrano has begun, according to city officials.

On Thursday, workers could be seen near the AAMCO along Doheny Park Road and Camino Capistrano. City officials said the workers will begin with saw cutting before demolition. Concrete work will begin therafter.

The project includes creating narrower vehicle lanes, realigning two side street intersections, raising bulb-outs at the intersections and adjusting the roadway’s striping. It will also include pavement rehabilitation on the streets that warrant the most immediate attention.

City officials have urged drivers who travel through the area to use caution and expect minor delays.

Planning Commission OKs Antenna Location in Town Center THE LATEST: Planning Commissioners recently approved two permits to allow the installation of roof-mounted commercial wireless telecommunication antennas on a building in Town Center.

The Commissioners voted 4-0, with Commissioner April O’Connor having recused herself from the vote, to allow Sprint PCS to install six antennas on the roof of 24661 Del Prado Avenue.

The antennas are being relocated from the Union Bank site, which is slated for redevelopment.

The six antennas with ancillary equipment will be housed inside two Fiber Reinforced Plastic structures that will extend 9 feet, 3 inches above the height of the existing roof, making the total building height 33 feet, 6 inches. The antennas will be covered by material to resemble a chimney.

According to the staff report, the antenna facility will not create a significant or meaningful blockage to public views, will be an enhancement to the city by providing additional communication capabilities, won’t interfere with the reception or transmission of other wireless telecommunication signals, will operate in compliance with all applicable federal safety regulations, and the public’s need for the use of the antenna facility has been documented.

Finance Review Committee Member Shares Recommendations THE LATEST: At a March 27 Financial Review Committee meeting, committee member Toni Nelson made a presentation that included recommendations she would like to see made to the Council regarding the city’s finances.

Those recommendations include to recognize the seriousness of a downward trend in total government fund balances and to take steps to replenish funds by creating annual surpluses; to gradually rebuild government funds and set aside specific reserves for priority projects; and to not draw down reserves unless a comprehensive study shows the city is over reserved.

Nelson also recommended the committee work with the Council to examine all of the aspects of the financial model, to adopt a zero budget approach for 2018, to have joint FRC and Council meetings for “maximum efficiency and transparency,” and to adopt monthly budgets and prepare monthly reports of actual results.

Chairman Brian Porter said Nelson’s presentation contained a lot of information and the he would like the committee to “digest” it so they can have “educated conversations” about it.

Acting City Manager Mike Killebrew said he would like to see the committee work with him on developing a long-term financial plan.

THE LATEST: San Juan Capistrano City Council members are getting closer to deciding what type of development will go on the 15-acre Lower Rosan Ranch property off of Stonehill Drive, and on March 29 they asked members of the public for input.

The Council has been reviewing 13 development proposals for the property since January and recently narrowed the field to five bids. In order to gauge interest and get input on those five proposals from the community, the Council held a workshop on March 29 at City Hall.

The following are the five development bids currently under consideration (as described by the potential developers): • Frontier Real Estate Investments, LLC: A Home Depot and restaurant pad on the front 10 acres, and a secondary non-retail use on the rear 5 acres.

• Ganahl Lumber Company: Retailer of lumber, building materials and hardware. The products carried and services offered are aimed primarily at contractors and other professionals.

• REDA Acquisitions, LLC: The Stonehill Commons—a mixed-use business park that incorporates service retail, medical and creative office/R&D uses along with light industrial and mini-storage or ancillary auto parking for neighboring auto dealers.

• Synerglenn Community, Inc.: Special needs housing and active senior apartments (55+). The proposal also includes an agricultural buffer between the neighborhood and Capistrano Valley Mobile Estates, a parking structure for the neighboring dealerships and a storage facility.

• W illiams Family Partners, LLC: A master planned neighborhood comprised of residential small lot detached homes and attached town homes for first- and second-time home buyers. The proposal also includes a business hotel on the southern part of the property near Stonehill Drive.

WHAT’S NEXT: During the workshop, members of the public listened to presentations on each proposal and shared their thoughts during public comment.

The Council will continue discussing the bids in closed session on April 4.

Historical Society Seeks Applicants for Scholarships The Dana Point Historical Society will award $1,000 scholarships to two graduating local seniors.

The Doris Walker Memorial Scholarship will go to a Dana Point resident who attends Dana Hills High School, and the Lucy Chavarrias-Saunderson Scholarship will go to a student living in Capistrano Beach who attends either San Clemente High School or San Juan Hills High School.

All graduating students planning to attend a trade school, community college, state college or university in 2017 are eligible. The award is based on merit and

community involvement.

The deadline for applications is Friday, April 14 and can be obtained through the Head Academic Advisor at the schools.

Applicants do not have to be a part of the Historical Society.

Surterre Properties to Hold E-Waste Collection Drive Surterre Properties will host an e-waste collection and paper drive on Saturday, April 8 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

The service is free, and agents from Surterre Properties, along with volunteers, will collect the items and deliver it to a recycling center. ProShred will be on site to handle any paper needs.

Mitchell said the brand, Alana Mitchell Skincare, was launched less than a year ago. Before then, Mitchell marketed various products from different brands.

“We’re combining the expertise of skin products and sales, and we’re a brand that’s direct-to-consumer,” Mitchell said.

In other words, the company seeks to make products for people who are looking for specific remedies, not necessarily wholesale goods.

Mitchell said because of the success of her product line, she intends to give other businesses some help when navigating markets.

he number of persons that survive paycheck-to-paycheck is staggering. With the universal use of credit cards, on which a flood of interest perpetually flows, together with consumer borrowing for every impulse item the marketing industry can devise, it’s no wonder, as reported, that nearly one-third of American families could not meet their household expenses if regular family income were interrupted for 60 days. How it is the public has become conditioned to this mode of family finance is something I cannot understand.

Life in America was once quite different. As a young adult during the Eisenhower administration, like so many of

Dana Point voters made it very clear in two elections last year what course they want their city to take. On Nov. 8, they elected two new Council members. The top vote-getter, Debra Lewis won by a margin of 2,225 votes over the third place candidate.

Her fellow slate candidate, Paul Wyatt, beat that same candidate by 1,890 votes.

Dana Point voters overwhelmingly approved Measure H and rejected the City Council-sponsored Measure I in June 2016.

The three Council members elected back in 2014 voted to put Measure I on the ballot as a way to thwart the will of thousands of Measure H petition signers. The same three members now use their voices and votes to impede and obstruct the efforts of Mayor Lewis and Mayor Pro Tem Wyatt, who are living up to their campaign commitments of “residents first” and a city government of openness and transparency.

Whether the issue is creating a Financial Review Committee and establishing workable rules and scope for its operation, organizing a meeting of all the city’s Neighborhood Watch captains with the mayor and police chief, or refining the city’s contract bidding solicitation policy, these same three members consistently find some way to impede the effort to make Dana Point Times March 31-April 6, 2017

Bank overdrafts, by which your bank covers a check written with insufficient funds (with a healthy fee attached), were unheard of. You may consider this overly restrictive, but the benefit is obvious: When purchases are restricted by your cash on hand, there is a built-in limit on what you can spend.

It’s my firm belief that the overabundance of credit in this nation imposes a most pernicious influence on our citizens.

If you acknowledge nothing else, recognize that institutional lending can be

described as deplorable—by design. For a telling example, consider the practice of one of the nation’s largest banks, Chase.

On the money you loan to them, by way of a passbook savings account, you currently receive interest of one one-hundredth of one percent annually. However, on the bank’s loans to you through their Visa card, the rate is 23.49 percent. Can you think of a more descriptive word than predatory?

The lesson is basic: Avoid borrowing whenever possible. To prosper in this world, there is a fundamental concept you must embrace: Interest is not something you pay; it is something you collect.

They need to join in the effort to improve our city and make Dana Point an even better place to live and do business.

END THE WAR ON DRUGS WITH A THOUGHTFUL APPROACH RICARDO NICOL, San Clemente

The tangential problems of narcotics crime, killing in Mexico and drug addiction in the United States would be greatly reduced by changing the strategy of the failed “war on drugs” being waged in Mexico (with costly, U.S.-provided guns, planes and helicopters), which is trying to stop the inexhaustible supply of illicit drugs flowing into this country. Go, instead, to a “winning hearts and minds” strategy that targets the insatiable demand for drugs in the U.S. and would be far less costly in terms of lives and money.

The model for such a strategy is that of the anti-tobacco media campaigns, health information programs and dissuasive laws, which have convinced Americans to voluntarily reduce the consumption of a very addictive and harmful substance significantly in the last 50 years, and the downward trend still continues.

A similar effort to reduce Americans’ demand for addictive drugs would bring enormous short- and long-term benefits to both the U.S. and Mexico. War is not

Recently, someone got into my car and my neighbor’s car without setting off alarms or breaking any windows. It appears there may be a gadget out there that can be bought inexpensively (a Google search indicates as much), or a new thievery trick, that will open cars and garages.

My neighbor alerted me when he said that someone had gotten into his car and stolen spare change. Odd, I thought. Later when I went to my car to go to the store, I saw that my proof of insurance certificate was laying on the driver’s seat. I usually keep that in the center console, and thus got a sinking feeling in my stomach. I looked in the console, and a pair of binoculars were gone. The neighbor had an expensive set of golf clubs in his car but those weren’t taken; thieves must have wanted only lightweight stuff in order to make a quick getaway. I posted a sign at our apartment complex to alert our neighbors to take anything they didn't want stolen out of their cars.

At the Movies: ‘Song to Song’ Finds a Melody for Malick Fans

hen did Terrence Malick go from artistic, independent filmmaker with a way with words and an eye for beautiful cinematography, to a parody of himself?

Well, paying attention to his career, it would appear sometime in between The Tree of Life (2010) and To the Wonder (2012). Badlands (1973) and Days of Heaven (1978) were traditionally structured masterpieces, while his contemporary efforts like Knight of Cups (2015) leave a lot to be desired, as well as a lot to be scripted.

His new film, Song to Song, follows Faye (Rooney Mara) around the Austin music scene while she has an affair with record executive Cook (Michael Fassbender) and is also courted by local musician B.V. (Ryan Gosling).

As she tries to use her connections for her band’s big break, Cook falls in love with waitress Rhonda (Natalie Portman), B.V. reunites with old flame Lykke (Lykke Li). Faye also meets an intriguing French woman named Zoey (Bérénice Marlohe).

Cate Blanchett, Holly Hunter and Val Kilmer also make appearances.

The one thing Song to Song has that Knight of Cups didn’t is a coherent plot. This time it’s not just whispery narration with some eye candy, but characters with whom we can actually be interested. The cast is fine with all of the improvised dialogue, especially Portman’s scenes. All of the party and concert footage of Austin City Limits is breathtaking, and it makes you forget for a second how hokey the indulgent voiceovers are. For Malick fans, this is a step forward; for general audiences, it’s still artsy-fartsy pretention. DP www.danapointtimes.com

ANGELINA’S PIZZA CAPRICCIOSA

A

wood-fired pizza oven does not guarantee great pizza—great ingredients and masterful technique do. The folks at Angelina’s Pizzeria Napoletana know this.

There are lots of examples on the pizza capricciosa that show how Angelina’s gets it.

Start with the mozzarella di bufala (water buffalo’s milk cheese). Now a staple of “artisanal” pizza joints, mozzarella di bufala is slightly “healthier” than cow’s milk cheese, but its creamy mouthfeel and slightly sweet, slightly sour taste is what really sets it apart.

But the cheese is but one thoughtful adornment to the pizza. Pit-in Gaeta olives—which taste like, one assumes, foie gras of a duck that only drinks red wine— marry unctuous and earthy mushrooms, scorched fresh basil, firecracker olive oil and thin slices of straight-up ham baked in the oven. Then there’s funky-sweet artichoke hearts strewn about. And all of that is on a thin (though slightly thicker

than other Neapolitan pies) and expertly charred, no-frills crust.

But all of that could be considered secondary to the simple sauce. Flash cooked and imported San Marzano tomatoes, still foamy from cooking, blend with the olive oil, basil oil and the fatty cheese to create nectar.

A lot of what you’ll see, taste and hear at Angelina’s is imported from Italy; but what makes their pizza great—a passion for excellence—only comes from within.

PROFILES OF OUR COMMUNITY So one day she went into an arts and crafts store while at college at Cal State Monterey Bay and looked at the jewelrymaking supplies. There, she figured she could turn her collections into jewelry.

“I never made jewelry before this in my life,” Burton said. “I’ve never had a class; I just kind of figured it out. I made two necklaces that first day.”

Burton said while she finished her last semester at school, she quit her part-time job and instead held jewelry parties to sell her pieces.

Three years later and she’s returned to Dana Point selling her items on Etsy, and she attends different markets and fairs throughout the area.

“It’s fun to sell to the customers faceto-face,” Burton said. “It’s nice to talk to them and see what their style and likes are.”

On Tuesday, she created a necklace with a green piece of sea glass while kids played on the sand at Capo Beach.

She said it doesn’t take her a long time to create the pieces, but some items do require more work than others.

“The earrings can (take time); no two pieces will be the same, but I like to try and match them as best as I can,” Burton said.

n a recent morning, Emily Burton crouched down to the sand and pushed aside small rocks on one of her trips to Capistrano Beach. Moving slowly farther north, she suddenly stopped and reached out, standing to full height with a bright piece of green sea glass. Colorful finds are good for her business.

“One time I found a pink piece,” Burton said as she walked down the sand. “That one was so unique so it was probably my favorite.”

resident said she has gallon-sized Ziploc bags of blue, green, brown and white pieces of sea glass, though she’s careful to say she’s not a hoarder. Collecting gems of the seashore has just been a hobby she’s had since she was a little girl, which she’s now trying to turn into something more.

“I grew up collecting sea glass,” Burton said. “I had tons of it, and it came to the point like, ‘OK, I need to do something with this.’”

a piece of sea glass that she’s collected.

Some have wires wrapped around the glass, which is attached to a chain.

Others, like her bracelets, have a hole drilled through the glass with a charm to overlay it.

“My ultimate goal is to make this into a full-time business,” Burton said. “For now it’s a fun side hobby. I love sitting there and creating something with glass. I love the idea of repurposing it.”

Burton graduated with a degree in business and hopes that can help her to expand one day.

She said she typically goes out on the beach once or twice a week and can spend an hour or two scouring the sands.

“I probably look crazy to some people. I have this method and I zigzag across the beach,” Burton said.

Her jewelry prices start around the $15 mark, and Burton said she wants to ensure that her pieces stay affordable.

She said she would like to take a class to learn how to solder the jewelry, but for now she’s focusing on her other jobs and selling the pieces to as many people as she can.

Dolphins Edge Tritons in Five Sets, Gain Experience The Dana Hills boys volleyball team didn’t need any extra pep talks from coach Oz Simmons during its South Coast League match against San Clemente on March 28. Many of the Dolphins players were experiencing the rivalry with their neighbor to the south for the first time at the varsity level, and adrenaline and crowd noise provided the spark they’ve been looking for.

Dana Hills jumped out of the gate to take the first two sets, then held on to the finish and denied the visiting Tritons a comeback on their home court to take the match in five, 26-24, 25-21, 15-25, 21-25, 15-12.

The Dolphins (12-11, 2-0 league) roster is loaded with seniors and very few of them have varsity experience. The team has been mired in a .500 season, but Dana Hills matched up well with the veteran Tritons (7-5, 0-1) and the win put them atop the league standings.

Dana Hills raced out to a 14-7 advantage in the first set, but San Clemente answered with a run of its own and leveled the match at 17-17 when Kyle Merrill recorded a kill.

Back-to-back San Clemente errors handed the Dolphins the set 26-24.

Everything seemed to go the Dolphins’ way in the second set. With a late three-point lead, Dana Hills junior Ryan Neumann lost his shoe during a rally, but stayed with the action and recorded a kill that set up match point.

San Clemente found its footing in the third set and won it easily behind the standout play of Jess Hunt, Bryce Curtis and Kyler Presho. Hunt recorded six of his game-high 26 kills in the fourth set and Curtis recorded two key blocks that forced the final frame.

The teams were knotted at 4-4 in the fi fth set when Dana Hills made a move, recording four straight points to open a lead they held on to.

Presho had 15 kills and Curtis had 10 to go along with five blocks. Dylan Campeau and Neumann each had 16 kills for Dana Hills.

But the Dolphins countered with their own top pitching prospect, Hans Crouse, and the middle of the Dolphins lineup delivered the big hits in a 4-3 victory. Dana Hills was scheduled to play Canterbury of Florida in the tournament quarterfinals on March 30. Results were not available at press time.

The matchup between Crouse and Henderson was appointment viewing at the tournament, but neither pitcher was able to fall into a comfortable groove and the pitching duel never materialized.

Instead, both teams spent the afternoon manufacturing runs as best they could against elite pitching talent.

Crouse pitched 5 1/3 innings, striking out nine while giving up three runs, none of which were earned. Crouse and the Dolphins did damage to themselves with errors in the field and wild pitches that allowed Cullman to score once in the second and twice in the third inning.

Dana Hills senior Joe DeBaca hit a twoout, two RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3 in the third, and Jeremy Ciolek hit a go-ahead RBI double in the fourth to give the Dolphins the lead for good.

Boys Golf Remains Team to Beat Through three South Coast League contests, the Dana Hills boys golf team is poised to repeat last year’s league championship-winning performance.

Dana Hills (5-3, 3-0) has breezed past its first three opponents, winning by a combined 31 strokes.

The Dolphins defeated Mission Viejo 194-208 on March 29 at El Niguel Country Club. Dana Hills senior Blake Brothers shot a 35 (-1) to earn match medal honors.

“I told the guys the energy is here because of San Clemente, so we didn’t need to worry about that, we just had to focus on the X’s and O’s. This is a good win for guys that don’t have that experience,” Simmons said. “This is a huge stepping stone for these guys.”

Softball Bats Erupt in League Opener The Dana Hills softball lineup caught fire in its Sea View League opener against Trabuco Hills on March 28. The Dolphins recorded 16 hits and got a stellar outing from starting pitcher Serafine Parrish in an 8-2 victory.

Mia Onesto, Meryl Reinhart and Tori Sickmeier all went 3 for 3 at the plate, and Cozette Zoch recorded two hits in the win.

Parrish pitched five innings and struck out 10 Mustang batters to pick up her fourth win of the season. The effort lowered Parrish’s ERA to a microscopic 0.14.

What to Do with the Waste?

“We know how important these regional events are for our surfers to gain points and experience within their home region,” said WSL North America General Manager Meg Bernado. “We’re really excited to get the Jack’s Pro on the schedule to do just that and give some up-and-coming guys a shot at competing.”

It’s looking like there should be plenty of surf at the competition. There’s a west swell on tap for the week with wave heights hanging in the waist- to shoulderhigh zone. Conditions look like they’ll remain relatively clean in the mornings with the classic springtime northwest flow picking up into the afternoons. A small southwest pulse keeps the surf fun and contestable throughout the week with a reinforcing west swell starting to show later in the day on Sunday. DP

There are currently 3.6 million pounds of nuclear waste languishing in temporary storage not far from where the turf meets the surf at San O. An estimated 8 million people live within a 50-mile radius of the shuttered power plant. Add a couple of earthquake fault lines, the very real threat of a tsunami, one of the biggest military bases in the country, the most trafficked interstate on the West Coast, along with a litany of other variables and it doesn’t take a nuclear physicist to see how dangerous the current situation is.

“I believe almost any place would be better (to store nuclear waste),” said Rep. Darrell Issa after a tour of the SONGS plant in February. Keep in mind the Republican congressman has questioned scientists on global warming timelines, making his statement about the location of the SONGS waste all the more alarming.

Obviously, one doesn’t just send nuclear waste off to the dump. How and where to dispose of it remains a huge roadblock in the decommissioning of the plant, which is forecasted to start sometime in 2018.

There are currently a couple of ideas being floated.

Meanwhile, Issa has introduced a bill in Congress that would grant permission to the Department of Energy to issue contracts to private companies to store nuclear waste at facilities across the country. It’s more of a “band aid” solution, and even Issa doesn’t think keeping the waste at San Onofre forever is the way to go, but when you hear rumors that “they’re going to bury it all on the beach,” this is the plan to which those rumors refer.

But as the old surf contest adage goes, you’re only as good as your last heat win. Sibley came firing back in the Open Women’s division to beat Pinkerton and take out the win. The two San Clemente standouts ended up going first and second in the highly competitive NSSA divisions, but Pinkerton wasn’t done yet.

Over the weekend, she dominated the USA Surfing Prime contest at Oceanside’s south jetty. True to form, she got the win in

the Under 16 division and finished runnerup in the Under 18 group.

“Stoked to take the win in the U16 and get second in U18 today at the Prime at Oceanside. Plus, took the highest heat total of the day,” said Pinkerton when the spray finally settled.

Pinkerton has been dominating both the NSSA and USA Surfing ranks as of late, and given what she’s already accomplished, a couple titles come season’s end would be a fitting conclusion to her already successful run. DP

f you just can’t wait for the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington this summer and want to soak in an early-season competition at the famed Surf City pier, the WSL’s inaugural Jack’s Pro will be getting down on the south side from March 31 to April 2. The timing couldn’t be better. This year, Jack’s Surf Shop is celebrating its 60th year in business, making it one of the oldest surf shops in the U.S. Rated as a Qualifying Series (QS) 1,500, what the contest lacks in valuable qualifying points it more than makes up for in invaluable competitive experience. San Clemente and Dana Point’s next generation of talent is just now starting to hit the road and try their hand on the QS, and the more contests they can have close to home, the more seasoned they’ll be when it’s time to step out on a more international stage.

come in. On April 14, a hearing is scheduled regarding the possibility of rescinding the permit the California Coastal Commission previously issued to store the waste at San Onofre. In 2015, the Commission issued a 20-year permit that would allow the waste to be stored just 100 feet from shore.

Citing “compelling public interest,” Superior Court Judge Judith F. Hayes will hear arguments at San Diego’s Central Courthouse at 2 p.m. on April 14. If you care about the future of your community, it might be wise to call in sick at work or skip your afternoon surf session and attend. DP
