Five things Dana Point should know this week Protest Held for George Floyd; Demonstrators Call for Law Enforcement Reform THE LATEST: Protests continued on Wednesday, June 3, over the highly publicized death of George Floyd, a black man who died while in police custody in Minneapolis, with hundreds gathering in South Orange County, including Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano, for rallies that called on law enforcement reforms—specifically, the demilitarization of police departments.

Led by Aliso Viejo resident Khalil Watson, dozens of demonstrators peacefully marched from Bear Brand Park in Laguna Niguel to the Camino del Avion and Golden Lantern intersection, which straddles the Dana Point and Laguna Niguel border. There, they occupied the four corners while waving signs and chanting “Black Lives Matter!”

“We are here to show solidarity as a unit, occupy space and raise awareness in both communities of Laguna Niguel and Dana Point that if you choose to ignore this situation, it will come to your doorstep, so to speak, and you can’t hide from it,” Watson said, referring to the disproportionate treatment black Americans have endured when it comes to police brutality and the justice system in general.

“The community is tired—and community being more than just the black community—but communities are tired of what’s going on in terms of police treatment when it comes to black lives and the disregard the police tend to have for them,” Watson, a black man, explained.

Minneapolis police officers stopped Floyd on May 25 after a store clerk had accused him of using a counterfeit $20 bill. What transpired during his arrest has since sent shock waves across the nation.

Recorded video taken by onlookers shows one of the four responding officers—Derek Chauvin—pinning Floyd on the pavement by kneeling on the 46-yearold’s neck as he gasped and pleaded for air, struggling to breathe.

Chauvin, a white officer with more than 18 years of service with the Minneapolis Police Department, was fired last week, when he was initially charged with third-degree murder and second-degree Dana Point Times June 5-11, 2020

manslaughter—charges many protesters have criticized for being too lenient.

But Wednesday’s rally in Dana Point came on the day that Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced that Chauvin’s charges were upgraded to second-degree murder.

The three officers who also were involved in Floyd’s arrest and didn’t intervene had also been fired last week, but it wasn’t until Wednesday that Ellison brought charges against Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao for aiding and abetting in Floyd’s death, the New York Times reports.

For Watson, the new defensive coordinator for the Dana Hills High School football team, the protest on Wednesday goes beyond being the latest tragedy involving yet another unarmed black person killed at the hands of law enforcement.

Watson said he wants to see meaningful reforms to law enforcement, starting with having the mayors of nearby cities take a closer look at their police service budgets and cutting out spending that has funded military-style equipment for departments.

“We require transparency with police budgets when it comes down to funding the police,” he said. “We definitely believe in divesting and demilitarizing the police.

There’s no reason why, in Orange County especially, in some of these cities, that the police have some of these military equipment. That is completely out of bounds.”

Watson also said he and his fellow organizers of the protest believe there should be community review boards created, comprising marginalized and minority community members to have a say in the hiring and firing of police officers.

“We (as minorities) are still valued members of the community, and we believe that officers that don’t have our lives into account or don’t have us in mind when it comes to these situations, can’t

continue to work,” he said.

Ocean Institute to Hold Auction for ‘Pilgrim’ Artifacts THE LATEST: The Ocean Institute will be holding an online auction for notable artifacts of the Pilgrim on Friday, June 12 at 6 p.m.

The Pilgrim, a tall ship and Dana Point staple, sank in her slip on early Sunday, March 29. The once three-masted schooner was a full-sized 1945 replica of the merchant ship that Richard Henry Dana detailed in his classic novel Two Years Before the Mast. The regional icon was a sought-after field trip destination for students for several decades.

“Around 5:15 a.m., I got a call letting me know that the Pilgrim had listed on its side and had sunk,” said Dan Goldbacher, director of maritime for Ocean Institute.

“Throughout the entire process, we were working to salvage everything we possibly could. The boat mattered to a lot of people.”

Valued at $6 million, the Pilgrim sank in the Dana Point Harbor in approximately 10 feet of water. Efforts were made to lift the vessel to no avail. Crews worked to salvage what they could, and the rest was demolished and removed from her slip.

Goldbacher says the goal of the auction is to fundraise as much as possible to transition back toward relatively regular operation. Ocean Institute has been

closed to the public since March, due to state directives meant to combat spread of COVID-19. Due to the stay-at-home order, the institute had to postpone its biggest fundraiser of the year, the Ocean Institute Fest and Culinary-Music Festival, formerly known as the Jazz Festival.

Some auction items include Pilgrim nameplates, Pilgrim fastener plaques made from the Pilgrim’s hull and boarding ladders.

“This is a chance for people to have a piece of history in their home and be able to give back to a nonprofit,” Goldbacher said. “We want to be here to support the community, support Orange County, support our schools.”

SONGS Staff, Consultants Discuss Emergency Scenarios in Community Engagement Panel THE LATEST: Staff and consultants with the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) discussed how the station would handle canisters cracking or corroding, terrorist attacks and other emergency situations during a community engagement panel on Thursday, May 28.

Members of the public listened in and commented during the panel discussion.

SONGS is being decommissioned—a process that began in 2013—and plans are underway to dismantle the power plant.

Local residents have questioned aspects of SONGS’ safety and transparency, including the effects of nuclear leakage on the community and in the ocean. SONGS staff and consultants have responded by saying they are taking every step to ensure safety for the community and employees, insisting people are not at risk.

Michael Corradini, a nuclear engineering professor at University of Wisconsin, said the dry used fuel storage systems at SONGS are stainless steel and specifically designed for coastal environments. Inspections are done regularly on canisters for corrosion, and remediation techniques are taken if any corrosion is detected.

As for the possibility of terrorist attacks, details discussed were scant due to security reasons, but a presentation slide did say the robust designs of dry storage systems help protect spent fuel from terrorist attacks due to massive physical shielding. There also are multiple barriers to radioactive material releases, though no dry storage system provides complete protection against all types of attacks.

“Experience shows one of the biggest risks in any of these endeavors is complacency,” Isaacs said.

Petitioners who called for the community engagement panel wrote in a letter before the meeting that they had hoped to see public concerns addressed, saying they were previously disappointed that many of the worst-case scenarios were not addressed at past public meetings over the past six years.

“For us, the issue has shifted from the dangers presented by fuel pools and operating reactors to possible dangers in dry cask storage. Although this is safer, it now appears that this waste will remain on site for the indefinite future. Since it has nowhere to go, what could possibly go wrong in the next 30-50 years,” petitioners wrote in the letter.—Collin Breaux

State and Federal Representatives Respond to Racial Injustice THE LATEST: U.S. Representative Mike

Levin (D-CA) issued a statement on Thursday, June 4, on the protests in response to the death of George Floyd and other black Americans, outlining actions he is taking to address systemic racial injustice in America and to reform law enforcement.

“Our country is in crisis, broken by generations of systemic racial injustice, and it’s clear that only real change will allow us to begin healing,” Levin said. “The protests in response to the killing of George Floyd are a necessary part of that process, and I stand with peaceful demonstrators across the country.

Bystander footage of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pressing his knee on Floyd’s neck, ignoring Floyd’s “I can’t breathe” cries until he eventually stopped moving, has sparked nationwide protests, some violent.

Similarly, Sen. Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) issued a statement acknowledging that the pain and anger that protesters have is real, and they must be heard after publicly demanding justice for Floyd.

“However, some have used the protests as a pretext to commit criminal acts,” Bates said. “The looting, vandalism, and violence that have ravaged many communities are inexcusable.”

Bates went on to state that “law and

order” also means ensuring justice for Floyd’s family and holding accountable those who have violated their oaths to serve and protect their communities.

“The hard work of building a safer and more just country for all Americans—especially African Americans and other people of color—must continue with greater urgency,” Bates said. “It is critical that we have law and order, but it is equally critical that those who enforce law and order do so in a just and accountable manner.”

Levin also announced on June 4 that he is cosponsoring the Eric Garner Excessive Use of Force Prevention Act of 2019 to amend civil rights law to prohibit the use of chokeholds by law enforcement. Senate Committee Passes Bill for No Toll Road in San Clemente THE LATEST: The California Senate Transportation Committee unanimously approved Senate Bill 1373 on Friday, May 29—a bill proposed by Sen. Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) that would enshrine

into law that no toll road extension will go through the City of San Clemente.

The next hearing on SB 1373 will likely be in the Senate Appropriations Committee on Monday, June 8, before it could be voted on in the Senate and subsequently signed into law.

On March 12, the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA)—which oversees Orange County’s toll roads—announced that it was no longer considering extending SR 241, a proposed route that would cut through San Clemente.

SB 1373 would clarify existing law that State Route 241 will not run through the City of San Clemente. The bill would remove from state law a highway alignment that state and regional transportation agencies have abandoned due to its significant environmental and economic costs.

“Today’s outcome is a major step towards ensuring that a potential toll road extension will not tear the City of San Clemente apart,” said Bates. “If signed into law, SB 1373 will give San Clemente residents the certainty they desire to keep their city together for future generations. I will continue to work with stakeholders as the bill moves forward this year.”

DPHS Announces Annual Scholarship Recipients The Dana Point Historical Society Scholarship Committee has chosen two high school seniors headed for college to receive the Society’s $1,000 scholarships.

Chair Heidi Hyde and her committee— consisting of Judy Henderson, Judy Brandmeier, Fay Kristjanson and Susan Hinman— have awarded the $1,000 Doris I. Walker Scholarship to Brisa Romero of Dana Hills High School. Aside from graduating with Academic Distinction and the California Seal of Bi-Literacy, Brisa excels in soccer and was a member and officer of the community assistance clubs SOS PATHS and the Interact Club of Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary.

Romero was also a recipient of the “Dolphin Award” in her junior and senior years as “an outstanding example of team spirit, leadership, energy, positivity, communication, Dana Point Times June 5-11, 2020

and taking charge.” She plans on attending Saddleback College, majoring in kinesiology in pursuit of becoming a physical therapist.

The scholarship committee awarded the $1,000 Lucy Chavarrias-Saunderson Scholarship to Perla Rodriguez of San Clemente High School. Rodriguez graduates with valedictorian honors and was also awarded the California State Seal of Bi-Literacy.

Throughout high school, Rodriguez participated in various community service events, including food drives, toy drives and tutoring students while maintaining a greater than 4.2 grade-point average throughout the four years. Rodriguez was an active member of the SCHS clubs Interact and Fuerza Latinx. She will attend UC Irvine.

The Doris Walker Scholarship is awarded to a Dana Point resident attending Dana Hills High School. The Lucy ChavarriasSaunderson Scholarship is awarded to a student living in Capistrano Beach who attends San Clemente High or San Juan Hills High. According to the organization, the scholarships are based on merit and need, with a focus on community service.

In years past, the Dana Point Historical Society has put on a fiesta to celebrate the scholarship recipients. However, due social distancing directives amid the coronavirus pandemic, details for a celebration are unclear at this time.

DPHS Announces Honorees for Founders Day Award The Dana Point Historical Society’s Founders Day Award—an honor that recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the history of Dana Point—will go to Geody and Richard Deffenbaugh this year.

Both grew up in California --- Richard Deffenbaugh in Anaheim and Geody in La Mirada. Richard’s first experience with Dana Point was in 1962, when he came here to surf as a teenager. They met at a party and married on July 7, 1969.

Richard’s father worked for the Richfield Oil Company, and when a job opening came up at the Richfield Beacon Gas Station in Dana Point, Richard and Geody began their business and lives in the area.

Their first home was in one of the historic apartments close to the business on Pacific Coast Highway.

When they arrived in town in 1969, the population of Dana Point, Capistrano Beach and San Juan Capistrano combined was 4,000 inhabitants.

“The Deffenbaughs remember the era: All stores were closed on Sunday except for gas stations; El Toro was strictly Leisure World and a Marine Base; Mission Viejo was only in the planning stage, and the area surrounding Dana Point was largely farmland and orange groves,” according to the Historical Society. “There was no harbor, though dredging had begun. The entrance to Doheny State Park was across the street from their gas station.”

Greyhound buses, a popular means of transportation then, stopped right outside their station. The Richfield Tower was a landmark for planes and ships.

Richfield Oil Company became the Atlantic Richfield Company (better known as ARCO), and by 1985 the company was changing the way its gas stations were to be operated. Auto repair gave way to convenience stores, and the Deffenbaughs’ business was one of the first 10 to be changed over. Business sharply declined since no one understood what a convenience gas station was at the time.

Richard responded by opening an auto repair shop next door and persuaded Geody to help run the AM/PM market “only for six months.” Geody ended up running the AM/PM for 27 years, until they sold it in 2009.

Geody and Richard raised two children, Darren and Janae, who attended local schools and went to college at UCLA. Richard has been a member of the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce Board for nearly 50 years and is the longest-standing member of the Chamber. In 2013, the Chamber named the Deffenbaughs’ Dana Point Auto Service as Business of the Year.

In 2014, Richard was the guest speaker for the Dana Point Historical Society, when he presented the Richfield Tower Beacon on a custom-designed stand. The iconic beacon in Dana Point was first erected in 1928 as part of a chain of 36 towers on the West Coast (it was dismantled in 1971).

The beacon stands in the DPHS museum today.

“As members of the Dana Point community, both Geody and Richard Deffenbaugh have illustrated a lifelong commitment to our area while pleasantly amassing many stories of local characters as well as wellknown legends,” a DPHS news release states. “The Dana Point Historical Society is proud to honor the Deffenbaughs in 2020. We look forward to hosting an event in the future to publicly thank them and recognize their years of service and commitment to the Dana Point area.”

Domestic Violence-Related Calls to OCSD in Dana Point

Advocates Continue to Urge Domestic Violence Survivors to Seek Help

Patricia Wenskunas has a message for survivors of domestic violence: You are not alone.

“Hang onto hope. There are people that care, and they can help you break the cycle,” Wenskunas said. “You can survive and thrive. Please reach out for help.”

Wenskunas is the CEO and founder of Crime Survivors Inc., a nonprofit organization that works to provide resources and assistance to victims of crimes, including murder attempts, rape and human trafficking. She says that with resource availability shifting, victims may have trouble reaching out.

When a survivor of domestic violence lives with his or her abuser, their safest hours could be during the workday, when they are apart.

Since California has enacted its stay-athome order in March to reduce the spread of COVID-19, the hours that a survivor spends with an abuser have likely been extended. But monitoring domestic violence cases and responding to a victim’s outreach poses its challenges.

In Dana Point, domestic violence-related calls to Orange County Sheriff’s Department had decreased in March, compared to the same time last year, and had doubled in April, compared to the same time last year. In San Clemente, OCSD received five domestic violence calls in March 2019 but received 12 calls in March 2020. April also saw a slight increase, with eight calls in April 2019 and 10 calls in April 2020. San Juan Capistrano has seen slight upticks each month of 2020 compared to the same months last year.

But not every survivor chooses to call law enforcement to report the abuse, whether that be due to fear of repercussions, fear of law enforcement or fear of their abuser getting in trouble. Those fears have been further complicated by the coronavirus pandemic.

“A lot of victims may be thinking, ‘If I stay home, I may be abused, but if I go to the hospital, I may die of COVID-19,’” Wenskunas said.

Wenskunas says that with resource availability shifting, victims may have trouble reaching out.

“Based on the calls we are getting, victims feel deterred when walk-in offices for police services are closed,” Wenskunas said. “Abusers tell victims things like ‘If you leave, come back and get us infected, I’m going to kill you.’ That kind of fear leads most victims to just want to keep their Dana Point Times June 5-11, 2020

families together.”

Wenskunas says that Crime Survivors Inc., as well as other nonprofit organizations and agencies responding to domestic violence, have had to get creative in adapting to the circumstances.

“We need to listen to victims. Victims can tell us what they need; when we hear from them, we can create something better than what we were doing before,” Wenskunas said.

Crime Survivors Inc. has held weekly roundtable Zoom meetings for all Southern California counties. About 150-300 individuals representing service providers, various district attorney offices, sheriff’s departments, probation offices and advocacy groups join in on the call to better coordinate between agencies.

“We saw a spike in our hotline calls from the week of the stay-at-home order to the following week, by 40%,” said Andrea McCallister, Director of Development and Communications for Laura’s House, a domestic violence shelter in Orange County.

Nonprofits have been communicating with each other to help each other fill in the gaps for available hotel rooms, diapers, groceries and more. They’ve also assisted each other in adapting to social distancing.

McCallister says Laura’s House was quick to respond to the orders, knowing that victims of abuse would be relying on the organization. On March 18, Laura’s House counseling and therapeutic services were converted to a telehealth format, with clients meeting with therapists and legal advocates using a secure, online platform.

The emergency shelter was prepped and put into effect new policies and waiting periods for entering new clients, and the safetynet hotel night program ramped up, enabling coordinators to help those in urgent need

by offering them bed nights with one of the local hotel partners.

From the week of March 16, when the stay-at-home order was issued, to the following week, Laura’s House saw a 40% increase in calls to its 24-hour Crisis Hotline.

Coordinators also enabled the Heart Chat, (text and IM feature for teens) to be used for the general population, and provide another way for victims of abuse to reach out to them for help.

Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes, a Laura’s House Board Member, has reported that domestic violence-related calls to the Sheriff’s Department are up 20% over last year at this time.

By the end of the first four-week period of the stay-at-home order, domestic violence calls to the sheriff were up about 25% from a year earlier, according to Barnes’ statements during an April 16 county news briefing on COVID-19. He added that calls involving family disputes also were up about 24% during the same period, and that his department had taken eight calls for child abuse, compared with three during the same time period in 2019.

McCallister says that for those considering reaching out for help, the 24/7 hotline is the best way to start. Advocates who handle calls are able to coordinate resources and safety plans tailored to the individual’s circumstances and can figure out what will work out best for the survivor.

“The first 72 hours of when a victim leaves the abuser is the most dangerous,” McCallister said.

Laura’s House has since been able to reduce the waiting period for a safety net hotel stay. Temperature checks for staff and residents are part of new protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“We hope to work together to meet the

needs of victims of abuse here in Orange County and our surrounding counties,” McCallister said. “We know that for many, it is a difficult time to reach out, but together we will be ready and positioned to help, inspiring hope and empowering change for a life free of abuse.”

For those who have not experienced domestic violence, Wenskunas asks allies to be patient, understanding and compassionate.

“The majority of survivors don’t want others who haven’t walked this journey to ever have to know what it feels like,” Wenskunas said. “Listen and hear what a victim says without judgment, without shame, without blame, without guilt. Try to to be in that moment with that victim so that there is hope and healing.” DP

In fact, doing so prevents the normal societal mass immunization that all of our bodies undergo each year by allowing exposure to a virus.

We’re told that if closing the entire nation will save just one life, why wouldn't we do it? My response to that is this: With over 40,000 highway-related deaths each year, why are we still driving? If we could prevent just one death by giving up our vehicles, why wouldn't we do so?

When you lock down an entire society, force them not to leave their homes, close their businesses, eliminate their ability to earn a living, close schools and universities, forbid them from engaging in any form of social activity, mandate what they can and cannot do with their own personal lives, and scare the hell out of everyone . . . what did you expect would happen when a tragic incident such as the (charged) murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis occurs?

Certainly, social injustice and inequality among minorities in our country exists and has existed since our founding. However, the usurpation of our rights on this scale has not occurred in the 244 years since the founding of our nation.

For those who instituted these draconian policies, I ask the questions: What did you expect would happen? Did you think through the scenario that perhaps people would rebel? Did you actually think that our society would accept these measures without pushing back? Did you think that you could ruin the economic and social fabric of our lives and we would sheepishly just accept those decisions?

The tragedy of George Floyd was the spark that ignited the fire of peaceful protests, which morphed into violent riots across our great nation. However, the fuel for this fire was provided by inaccurate and perhaps outright wrong decisions by our political leaders on all levels. Perhaps, the term "we are instituting these measures out of an abundance of caution" should have been "we are instituting these measures, because we are ignorant of the facts at this time and really don't know what else to do.”

I am in my mid-70s; I and members of my age group, as well as those with serious medical conditions, would have been happy to quarantine ourselves if we felt that would mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Let everyone else go on with their lives!

However, we are now experiencing the true ramifications of what happens when the rights of our citizens are usurped by those who we elected to represent us. So next time a tragedy occurs, our leaders should speculate on the long game, instead of blindly reacting "out of an abundance of caution.” What did you expect would happen?

The Capistrano Unified School District surveyed all the 2020 senior graduates and parents, and the message was very clear: Page 7

high school graduation is a life-changing moment, rite of passage and deeply important.

The vote was to defer the ceremony to later in the summer when restrictions are lifted.

Seems simple enough, so why is there so much difficulty for CUSD to decide on a date and commit? Hopefully, it is not the result of shortsighted red tape due to a ceremony being scheduled after the district’s technical “year-end” and selfish concerns by the teachers union over a single day’s worth of compensation outside of the school year.

I am confident the union members, teachers and staff can volunteer a single unpaid day of their summer vacation to recognizing our senior students that have poured 12 years of effort into this treasured and important accomplishment.

As for social distancing, large football fields and PA systems provide the ability to distance safely and limit the audience to parents only. And with simply breaking the ceremony up into multiple groups alphabetically, you will have fewer people than currently occupy our Walmart or Target on any given day. Make it happen, CUSD and teachers union—it’s not that difficult if you really care about the students.

Oh, and one more thing, front-yard signs and car stickers are not a replacement for a graduation ceremony.

harles Bennett, one of Hollywood’s best-kept secrets and whose life and career was exposed to the world six years ago, is the subject of a new book, The Rise of the Modern Thriller—a two-volume follow-up to his posthumous autobiography.

Originally published in 2014 and edited by Bennett’s son, John Bennett, Hitchcock’s Partner in Suspense delved into Bennett’s personal experiences as an early, semi-regular writer on scripts of Alfred Hitchcock movies. It also covered the second half of his career, when he collaborated with another Hollywood heavyweight in Cecil B. DeMille.

Considering how many iconic filmmakers and major studios Bennett was working for throughout the 20th century, it’s still baffling to think that it took until the writer’s death in 1995—the same year he was honored with the Laurel Award by the Writers Guild of America—for him to show up on the film community’s radar.

Bennett was responsible for crafting the scripts of huge hits including Blackmail (1928), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), The 39 Steps (1935), Sabotage (1936) and Saboteur (1942) for Hitchcock; Reap the Wild Wind (1942), The Story of Dr. Wassell (1944) and Unconquered (1947) for DeMille; and King Solomon’s Mines (1937), Joan of Paris (1942) and Forever and a Day (1943) for Robert Stevenson.

Bennett received his sole Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay with Foreign Correspondent (1940), also his penultimate collaboration with Hitchcock.

While Partner in Suspense was a traditional, straightforward biography, Rise of the Modern Thriller (again penned by son John) focuses on Bennett’s artistic impact on the film industry and his professional relationships, particularly with Hitchcock.

Readers get an in-depth recount of the writer’s process and inspiration for his stories. One aspect that’s especially fascinating is how Bennett had formatted and practiced his own equivalent of the now recognized “hero’s journey” structure over a decade before literary professor Joseph Campbell famously coined the concept.

It should also be noted that the new book features some serious accusations of plagiarism against Hitchcock that movie fans probably won’t like.

John Bennett, who is now a retired schoolteacher based in San Clemente, was happy with the positive reviews Partner in Suspense received from critics and historians, and he feels the new additions continue to dig further into his father’s tale.

“Only part of whole story was told with the first book,” he says.

Dana Point Resident and World War II Veteran Celebrates 95th Birthday

A

s a World War II veteran, Martin Fesser has survived bombings, had close calls with snipers and has overcome life-threatening moments with leadership and courage.

On Friday, May 29, after a lifetime of fighting a war and living through notable moments of American history, Martin celebrated his 95th birthday with a socially distanced, drive-by celebration. The Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 9934, of Dana Point, coordinated for law enforcement, firefighters, fellow veterans, family and friends to drive by his home to wish him a happy birthday.

In an interview with Dana Point Times, Martin’s son, Gary, shared stories of his father’s life and the ways he gave back to his community. Martin was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., before joining the military.

At age 18, he was sent to Germany to fight in World War II. Gary recounts a time after World War II in which his father was asked to stay in Germany with occupied forces a year after the war had ended.

“He had a unique experience, because he was in Germany after the war and saw the lives of the people after,” Gary said.

“He got to talk to these people about this ordeal and saw things from a new perspective.”

Though Martin was young at the time of World War II, the perspectives he gained shaped who he is today. Gary says that his father continues to show empathy and compassion to everyone.

“I have never seen a human being who treated others with such respect more than he has,” Gary said. “He always has.”

Regardless of who is voted into the White House, Martin has a love for his country and all of its citizens. In 1995, he was even awarded the Bronze Star Medal by former President Bill Clinton. The Bronze Star is awarded to members of the U.S Armed Forces for heroic or meritorious service or achievement in a combat zone.

Today, Martin lives with his son and best friend in Dana Point. Through all of the changes, one thing that remains a constant in Martin’s life is his love for America. DP

Summer Dreams Fading Despite push, hopes for summer youth baseball continue to fade

After nearly three months of being off the field due to coronavirus restrictions, the time for salvaging what would be left of the youth baseball spring seasons is dwindling, with no concrete boost of optimism coming this week.

Coming into the week, Dana Point Youth Baseball president Dana Kislig had been looking to finally start the spring season between June 1-15 and being able to get in a compact one-month regular season. There would be no time for any practical playoffs, with the fall season still scheduled for August 24.

San Juan Capistrano Little League president Brett Vermeulen said the hope for their league would be to start sometime between June 15 and July and play their own compact season until around August 15. Little League International has already canceled any postseason events.

However, after Kislig’s original conversation with the Dana Point Times on Wednesday, June 3, Kislig did not receive encouraging news from the City of Dana Point.

In an email conversation with Dana Point Director of General Services Robert Sedita that was provided to the Dana Point Times by Kislig, Sedita said that the Orange County Health Care Agency reiterated to him that all sports are not permitted in Phase 2.

When Sedita asked the OCHCA if they would be involved in Phase 3 or 4, the agency said they had not received word from the state regarding that.

“Based on that,” Sedita said in the email, “I am assuming there will be no changes or guidance for another few weeks regarding upcoming phases and Little League startups.”

Kislig then relayed that news to the DPYB board in another email.

“The written response from Robert telegraphs to me that we won’t be playing baseball by June 15 and are likely going to have to close the 2020 Spring Season,” Kislig said in the board email. “It’s not the City we are trying to convince otherwise, it’s some unelected bureaucrat in Santa Ana that [perhaps] has never played a sport in his or her life, and he or she isn’t going to let individual families make their own choices.”

Kislig told the Dana Point Times in a subsequent email that they tried working with the county, through the city, to push for a Dana Point Times June 5-11, 2020

“soft opening” to allow groups of six or seven players (splitting the 11- or 12-man teams into two, along with a coach), but there was no budge from county officials.

“The City of Dana Point has been great, and I cannot speak highly enough about all of them and the wonderful work they do for our youth and community,” Kislig said in the email. “The county, on the other hand, has no interest in our youth getting back to normal and getting some sunlight and exercise.”

Kislig said he and the DPYB board will hold off on any final decision until June 15, but Kislig said the chances of opening any season by June 15 “just went to about 5%.”

That 5% possibility might hinge on a push

by Orange County Third District Supervisor Don Wagner. The Third District consists of Anaheim, Irvine, Orange, Tustin, Villa Park and Yorba Linda. Dana Point is in the Fifth District.

“For the good of our children,” Wagner said in a statement on Tuesday, June 2, “I directed the County to push the State for an

accelerated reopening of all sports fields.

My goal is to resume youth activities immediately.”

The timetable for that push and accelerated reopening is unknown, but that’s where the hope of a spring or summer youth sports season will lie.

The loss of a season due to the COVID-19 pandemic would hit Dana Point Youth Baseball hard in many ways.

First, of course, the young players involved would lose a year of experience, learning and memories.

“In particular, for the older kids,” Kislig said, “this might be their last season before they go to high school.”

Secondly, it would have a big effect financially, for the organization and for the families of the players.

In his email to the board, one of the things Kislig looked for insight on and for the board to discuss was how to address DPYB’s inability to refund the families, even partially. Kislig explained that all

costs for DPYB are upfront, with many things already paid for all the way through Spring 2022.

DPYB usually operates at either no-cost or a loss, with families’ dues or corporate sponsor money paying off those upfront costs for things such as field permits and baseballs, among many other expenses. Kislig also said those sponsors were gone, with only two or three left before the end.

“We don’t know what we’re going to do if we don’t play,” Kislig said.

For now, Dana Point Youth Baseball is continuing to provide a small service to the community by providing hand sanitizer and masks for the City of Dana Point to distribute to local seniors.

Since the Dana Point Times’ original story on April 9, DPYB has made nearly 800 face masks and 7,000 bottles of sanitizer. Kislig said they plan on making up to 1,000 masks and 10,000 bottles of sanitizer.

Congratulations, Class Of 2020—— Just Keep Surfing Graduations haven’t been typical in SC and DP, but at least the surf’s been pumping

T

he school year is officially wrapped, and summer vacation is here. Thankfully, for the past couple of weeks, the waves have been pumping, enabling everyone to catch some waves.

No doubt, the last few months have been weird, especially if you’re a senior graduating into the great wide world. But as San Clemente High School surf coach John Dowell is quick to point out, “Class of 2020, you are always going to remember your senior year!”

Around the country, graduating seniors are caught between celebrating this huge milestone and wondering what comes next. And while things continue to morph and develop seemingly every day, their accomplishments and dedication to their education, athletic pursuits and future should inspire us all to push ahead with energy and a positive outlook.

“It isn’t traditional or familiar to what you thought graduation would look like, but you will always remember it,” Dowell says.

“Thank you! Thank you for your time, commitment and dedication to the surf team these past four years.”

One of Dowell’s big objectives as a coach is to produce great surfers—which he most certainly does—as well as great people.

heading off to colleges such as Cal Poly San Louis Obispo, San Diego State, Brigham Young University and a host of other great schools around the nation.

“I love how close our team is in and out of the water, and going through all four years with them has made lifelong friends,” says senior Matt Economos, who’s bound for Utah State.

Senior Dana Shany, who’s headed to Cal State Monterey Bay, adds: “This senior year, I got to bond and get closer with my teammates. Today, they are my best friends. It was a crazy year, but overall full of memories.”

Farther up Pacific Coast Highway in Dana Point, the story is much the same, as graduating seniors are stepping into a future that is far from certain.

“We have an amazing group of seniors here in Dana Point. Their graduation plans may have had to change with all that’s going on, but we can still honor them, celebrate their accomplishments and recognize that this is a unique group of students who have overcome a unique challenge,” says Eric Diamond, the president of the Dan Point

Surf Club.

The Dana Point Surf Club just awarded Dana Hills graduates Nate Caplinger and Sean Dougherty with scholarships to help them boldly chase their dreams.

“We couldn’t pick just one student this year, because it’s been a tough one for these guys, as well as the entire 2020 class,” Diamond explains. “So, the club picked two totally different surfers. Nick is very laidback and has a cool, casual style, while Sean’s surfing is aggressive and spontaneous.”

According to Diamond, the Dana Point Surf Club’s scholarships are based on ambassadorship, GPA, community service and competition results—in that order.

So, what’s next for this group of intrepid students? Unfortunately, it’s unclear what happens to all those typical summer jobs and plans for college in the fall. With local businesses finally starting to reopen, hopefully, some of those jobs still exist. At the very least, based on beach crowds the past few weekends, there’s going to be a need for lifeguards.

Meanwhile, universities are already plan-

ning and adjusting for what classes may look like in a few months. College definitely won’t be the same as it ever was. Everything from large lecture classes to the living situation in the dorms will be different. But these are smart, resilient, talented students who are sure to adapt and succeed.

“Your hard work has not gone unnoticed,” Dowell says. “I’m in awe of how you have all grown and matured into the people you are today, and I know you all have bright futures ahead in anything you choose to do. Good luck on your new life adventures, and don’t forget, when the going gets tough, the tough go surfing!”

K, so maybe graduating seniors don’t want to be called “groms” anymore. Fair enough.

But before you all hoist your diplomas and step into the wild world of adulthood, don’t forget that surfing has the power to keep you forever young.

And with that in mind, we’re sending off San Clemente’s Jake Vandenburg with one last shout-out. Graduating from St. Margaret’s Episcopal School with a 4.0 GPA, Jake is destined for big things.

“He works just as hard in the classroom as he does in his surfing, and it shows, as he’s ranked 11th in the Southwest Open Men’s division,” reports the NSSA’s Janice Aragon in her “Senior Spotlight.”

For the effort, Jake has chosen to attend Pepperdine University in Malibu. There, he’ll look to continue his academics and contribute to their surf team. Of course, the school’s nickname is the Waves, so it makes sense.

“I love the vibes of the school and location,” Jake told the NSSA. Congratulations to Jake and all of the graduating seniors. May your future be bright and full of opportunities. And, don’t worry, we’ll stop calling all of you “groms” now. DP Page 14
