Five things Dana Point should know this week Local Amateur Radio “Hams” to Celebrate Annual Field Day THE LATEST: Every June, more than 40,000 people throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places in an effort to demonstrate radio’s science, skill and service to society.

Ray Hutchinson, a Dana Point resident and retired Orange County Fire chief, will be one of them this year.

Orange County’s local club of FCClicensed amateur radio operators, also known as “hams,” had planned to demonstrate for “Field Day” at a Mission Viejo park prior to the novel coronavirus pandemic, but now—on Saturday, June 27 through Sunday, June 28—ham radio operators plan on operating their own individual stations out of their homes.

Amateur radio, also known as ham radio, is the use of radio frequency spectrum for purposes of non-commercial exchange of messages, wireless experimentation, self-training, private recreation, radiosport, contesting, and emergency communication. Hams are limited to the use of small frequency bands but can essentially communicate with other hams throughout the world, and even in outer space.

Field Day has been an annual tradition since 1933 and remains one of the most popular events in ham radio. The event is an annual emergency exercise, sponsored by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), and involves thousands of trained volunteer emergency communicators activating their stations, all over the United States and Canada, and contacting as many other stations as possible during a 24-hour period: from 11 a.m. Saturday, June 27, until 11 a.m. Sunday, June 28.

Field Day participants are awarded points for making use of certain equipment, such as operating on batteries or not relying on a petroleum source. Hutchinson, whose call sign is AE6H, will be operating from his backyard on Timothy Drive with a temporary antenna, batteries, and solar panels for electric power.

“With a goal of making hundreds of contacts worldwide, this emergency exercise is intended for hams to practice their capabilities in the event of a major disaster,” Hutchinson said. “In an emergency, if cell service or Internet goes down, radio is the Dana Point Times June 26-July 2, 2020

best way to communicate. It’s supposed to be a fun exercise, but it can teach you what to do during real-life scenarios.”

Hutchinson says he’s been a ham for about 30 years, thanks to the influence of a friend.

The worldwide hobby is purely voluntary.

The FCC prohibits hams from competing with commercial broadcasting stations and requires hams to use the hobby to be in direct communication with another party.

Protesters Continue to Call for End to Systemic Racism

THE LATEST: An anti-racism protest was held outside the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) offices on Wednesday, June 24, while the Board of Trustees held a virtual meeting.

Students and parents recalled their personal experiences with racism in the school district, including discrimination and microagression, some classrooms segregated with people of color being treated unfairly, as well as educators and officials not taking their claims seriously.

Protests against racism and police brutality have happened in South Orange County and throughout the world after George Floyd, a Black man, died in Minneapolis on Memorial Day after police officer Derek Chauvin forcibly placed a knee on Floyd’s neck while Floyd was subdued on the pavement. Chauvin, since fired, is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter, and charges of aiding and abetting have been brought against three other sincefired officers on the scene.

Angelie Jackson, who just graduated from San Juan Hills High School, said she was mocked for her skin tone, hair and her dad being African American throughout elementary, middle, and high school.

“People would even ask me questions, ‘Are you a slave?’ ” Jackson said. “They don’t do anything about it. When it gets reported, it just gets called bullying and is left alone.”

Parent Shereen Rahming said she had to pull her children out of school because of the racism they had encountered.

“My daughter was in class and found a Confederate flag on her desk,” Rahming said. “My daughter was on the field one day when a group of boys came up to her and started chanting, ‘Build the wall.’ I am a Central American immigrant, so of course they

knew exactly where to hit with that one.”

CUSD Jumps First Hurdle Toward Removing Hazardous Material from Bus Site THE LATEST: Capistrano Unified School District obtained approval for a coastal development permit on Monday, June 22, from the Dana Point Planning Commission to remove hazardous material from the district’s bus site in Capistrano Beach.

The application proposed that the “minor cleanup actions” include removal of sealed, non-leaking drums or barrels of hazardous waste or substances that have been stabilized, containerized and are designated for a lawfully permitted destination. CUSD intends to excavate the material from the bus yard located at 26126 Victoria Boulevard, with offsite disposal of contaminated soils.

“As for the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the proposed project qualifies for a categorical exemption under Class 30, in that the project scope is considered minor cleanup action,” said Belinda Deines, the city’s principal planner.

The project includes demolition of a 3,658-square-foot mechanic shop, 714 square-foot tire storage building, 1,075 square-foot wood shed, and gas islands, and removal of 38,000 square feet of asphalt pavement, two underground storage tanks (10,000 and 20,000 gallons), four hydraulic lifts, one clarifier, fuel piping, and approximately 1,800 cubic yards of potentially contaminated soil. The excavation required to remove the two gas and

diesel underground storage tanks requires permits in compliance with the Orange County Health Care Agency and Orange County Fire Authority.

“Right now, that is an estimate of potentially contaminated soil,” said Chris Larson, the project representative for CUSD. “Most of the time, it is excavated and hauled away to a hazardous removal site.”

Larson added that the water table is 1620 feet below the potentially contaminated soil and there is no anticipation for the water table to be contaminated.

Deines told Dana Point Times that the mechanic shop includes four hydraulic lifts with underground tanks and piping.

“This facility was used for vehicle maintenance and repair, which has the potential for contaminated soils at the site,” Deines said. “Additional soil sampling will be required to determine the extent of the hazardous materials in the soil.”

WHAT’S NEXT: CUSD will need to obtain permits from the County of Orange Health Care Agency Environmental Health Division, as well as other regulatory agency reviews and the City’s grading permit process, before removal and demolition will begin.—LB

EYE ON DP (Cont. from page 3) An alliance of rotary clubs from San Clemente, as well as from Dana Point, Mission Viejo and San Juan Capistrano, led the socially-distant caravan from the San Clemente Target to FAM, where volunteers unloaded the bags and boxes of donated foods and supplies from vehicles.

“We all just got together and bought some goods FAM needs,” said Tyler Boden of the San Clemente Rotary Club.

“In these times, it’s kind of hard to have these in-person community service events, and so we were just lucky to have an idea to do a caravan where people don’t really have to get out of their cars to be able to do community service.”

The nonprofit FAM, which provides help to families and individuals in need who are on the brink of becoming homeless, has seen a 110% increase in people seeking assistance from FAM since the start of the pandemic, according to FAM Chief Development Officer Mary Purdue.

“People were calling one after another, saying, ‘I lost my job, I don’t know what to do . . . I have two weeks’ worth of food, and I don’t know what to do,’ ” Purdue recalled. “So our job is to calm fears and help alleviate that emergency need and then get them on a path with one of our case managers to work on a path to selfsufficiency.”

Because of COVID-19, Purdue said, the nonprofit has experienced a 55% decrease in the amount of food it’s been able to receive from grocery stores every day, as well as a 90% reduction in volunteers.

“Of our 361 weekly volunteers, 90% were in the at-risk category, so it was a perfect storm,” she said, before noting that others in the community have stepped up to help fill the void. “But little by little, families in the community who were home with their kids—moms and dads, kids—were starting to come in and help in this time of need.”

More than 1,600 pounds of food were donated to FAM this past Friday, according to the nonprofit. FAM also received 1,526 packages of diapers, 2,740 packages of wipes, 106 packages of toilet paper and 137 bottles of hand sanitizer. More than $2,000 in monetary donations were given to FAM as well.

The idea for the caravan started with the local rotaries—San Clemente Rotary and the San Clemente Sunrise Rotary.

But it wasn’t long, he said, before the rotaries from San Juan Capistrano, Mission Viejo and Monarch Beach asked to help.—Shawn Raymundo

Governor Issues Face Mask Order; Debate Continues in OC THE LATEST: Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday, June 18, issued a new order Dana Point Times June 26-July 2, 2020

requiring Californians to wear face coverings while out in public, particularly in high-risk, crowded areas such as indoor shops, health care settings and while using public transportation.

The statewide order came on the heels of a debate that’s brewed in Orange County over whether or not to wear masks. Health officials recommend wearing masks and taking other safety measures, including social distancing, to limit the pandemic’s spread.

Newsom’s order also came a week after Orange County had lifted its own face mask requirement amid mounting pressure from residents, as well as from some members on the OC Board of Supervisors who had questioned the need for face coverings.

On June 11, acting Orange County Health Care Agency Officer Dr. Clayton Chau had announced that face coverings would only be strongly recommended but not mandatory. Chau was placed in the role following the abrupt departure of Dr. Nichole Quick, who resigned after facing harsh backlash, and physical threats, over her order mandating that people wear face coverings. Whether people publicly wear masks in South Orange County varies; some do, most generally don’t.

A majority of people who responded to an online poll in the Orange County, CA Coronavirus COVID-19 Updates group on Facebook said they think masks should be worn in public. A group administrator created the poll after being contacted for comment by the San Clemente Times.

“Bring the masks back! My mom and I are high-risk and exposed to people every day in our shop,” group member Heather Moreno said, after the county had lifted its requirement and before Newsom had issued his latest order. “We don’t have the ability to be closed, since summer is our busy time, and we need to work after being closed for over two months. It just makes sense.”

Thia Gelow, another group member, said masks are needed to prevent the spread of the virus, and it is “not right to put our seniors and immunocompromised neighbors at risk” because some people refuse to wear a mask.

The governor’s new face covering order notes that certain individuals are exempt, including toddlers aged 2-andunder and those who have certain medical conditions whose breathing could be obstructed by wearing a face covering.

Those who have a hearing impairment or those who regularly communicate with someone who has a hearing impairment also are exempt from wearing face masks.

People eating at restaurants can also remove their masks to eat or drink, “provided that they are able to maintain a distance of at least six feet away from persons who are not members of the same household or residence.”—SR and CB Page 4

Artists Chosen for Dana Point Utility Box Public Art Program The City of Dana Point and its Arts and Culture Commission have selected seven artists to contribute their work to the city’s first-ever Utility Box Public Art Program.

The artists will showcase their work to beautify eight utility boxes located throughout the city, contributing to the vitality and attractiveness of Dana Point streetscapes.

The professional and student artists chosen were Cliff Wassmann, Doug Smith, Robert Fitzgerald, Steve Adams, Ashley Keene, Savannah Hawkes and Jason Hankin.

Each artist was chosen by their ability to portray the city’s culture, historic heritage or a key activity. The art designs will cover all four sides and the top of the utility boxes and will be printed on vinyl from a vinyl wrapping company, hopefully by early fall.

“These reimagined electric boxes will go from being invisible to conversation pieces.

Hopefully, it will inspire more opportunities for local artists and encourage developers to include public art in their projects,” said Cliff Wassmann of Wassmann Fine Arts.

Jason Hankin, a student artist, grew up in Dana Point, attended RH Dana Elementary School and recently graduated from Dana Hills High School.

“I know what an amazing place this town is. I hope the utility box art can inspire other kids to not be afraid to express their artistic talents,” said Hankin.

ABC Awards Grant Funding to OCSD The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) awarded state funding to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the Oceanside Police Department to address alcohol-related crime in their jurisdictions, Sen. Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) announced last week.

Through its Alcohol Policing Partnership program, ABC awarded $97,500 to OCSD and $95,858 to the Oceanside Police Department. The funding comes from license fees collected in the alcoholic beverage industry.

“The grants from ABC will help make our communities safer, especially in neighborhoods that have a high rate of alcohol-related crime,” Bates said in a press release.

Bates, who represents the 36th Senate District comprising South Orange County and North San Diego County, went on to thank the ABC for the funding, stating that police agencies build community trust and reduce the potential of violent confrontations.

Previously, most communication between the Alcoholic Policing Partnership and local law enforcement occurred on a case-by-case basis for individual retail outlets, according to the press release. There was no proactive strategy used to combat alcohol-related problems on a communitywide scale until now.

The Alcoholic Policing Partnership’s mission is to work with local enforcement to eliminate crime, as well as public nuisance issues, revolving around drunk driving and underage drinking.

To have access to the state funding, law enforcement agencies must apply. The maximum amount of money to be given per agency is $100,000.—Costa Beavin-Pappas

Summer Reading Program Allows for Contactless Pickup Option The OC Public Library is hosting its

annual summer reading program through Aug 2. This year, the program has been changed to allow participants a contactless method of picking up books.

The program has established a curbside pickup option for members to place book items on hold. From there, they can drive to the libraries to pick up their books and then return items to the bookdrop when completed.

The summer reading program is open to all kids, teenagers and adults who want to read more. Throughout the program, participants will win badges and earn points for the books they finish.

SONGS Task Force Announces Findings and Recommendations for Spent Fuel Storage

I

n January 2019, Rep. Mike Levin (D-CA) assembled a task force with the goal of driving solutions to move and safely store sensitive waste located at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). On Wednesday, June 24, the congressman held a press briefing to announce the task force’s report of findings and recommendations.

The task force—co-chaired by Len Hering, a retired rear admiral who served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years, and Gregory Jaczko, former chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission—comprises 33 community members, councilmembers from neighboring cities (including Dana Point City Councilmember Debra Lewis), activists and scientific experts.

Lewis says she knew little about the operation of nuclear waste storage and the decommissioning process prior to the task force, which is partly why she felt inclined to join.

“I wanted to get solid information out to the people,” Lewis said. “I’ve learned a vast amount since the task force began. I want the community to understand what decommissioning means. There’s so much that goes into it . . . taking rods out, placing them in cooling pools, placing them in dry-cask storage. There are so many questions and so much debate over many of the steps that it’s so important that we rely on the facts each step of the way.”

The SONGS Task Force was divided into two committees: the Policy Committee and the Technical Committee. The Policy Committee identified five categories of policy recommendations to move forward with: federal legislation and regulatory oversight; state legislation and regulatory oversight; best practices; storage and aging management; and safety and handling.

In a prepared response from Southern California Edison, the majority owner and operator of the San Onofre plant, the company said it strongly supports legislation and appropriations to get the federal government moving on creating a permanent repository for the nation’s spent nuclear fuel.

“Rep. Mike Levin has focused his attention on this effort, and we appreciate his engagement on this complex issue,” SoCal Edison said. “Congressional action is vital to finding a solution.”

Nuclear power plants in the U.S. have been forced to store their own nuclear waste on site, as the federal government has yet to finalize and establish a permanent storage facility to contain the fuel.

The federal government’s plan to establish Yucca Mountain in Nevada as a permanent storage site has been stuck in legislative gridlock since 2010, when the Obama administration cut funding for the project. In February, President Donald Trump said he opposes Dana Point Times June 26-July 2, 2020

the long-delayed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.

“In the meantime, we remain squarely focused on safely maintaining the spent fuel while it remains on site,” Edison said in its prepared statement.

Since SONGS went offline in 2013, SoCal Edison has been transferring the plant’s spent nuclear fuel from the wet pools into its dry storage facility, or the Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI), using canisters manufactured by Holtec International.

While largely focusing on the safe storage of nuclear waste, the report lays outs a litany of federal and state policy recommendations to address many of the issues the task force raised related to SONGS and U.S. nuclear power plants in general.

Among those recommendations, the task force is calling on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to review international practices related to fuel storage, as well conduct inspections more frequently rather than quarterly. The task force is also advocating for Congress to require that spent fuel canisters have a design life of at least 100 years.

“The current state of U.S. (spent nuclear fuel) storage at reactor sites requires longterm vision for more than 100 years,” the reports states. “Congress must work with the NRC to ensure that thousands of canisters are not approved and then stranded on-site beyond their design lifespan.”

The report notes that nuclear waste could remain radioactive for 200,000 years and should remain “isolated from humans and

the environment, forever.” The report goes on to claim that the NRC’s licensing and permitting for nuclear waste storage “lacks transparent review process and critical analysis of applications that one expects of a regulator.”

SoCal Edison spokesperson John Dobken said that the Holtec canisters used at SONGS have a design life of 60 years and a service life of 100 years or more.

The difference, according to Holtec’s safety analysis report, is that the design life is the minimum that the canisters are engineered to perform their intended function, while the service life is the duration the canisters are reasonably expected to perform.

The SONGS Task Force report also touches on the eventuality of sea level rise and its potential impacts on Edison’s dry storage facility. The task force claims that, over time, the ISFSI could experience structural degradation as a result of a rising coastal waterline.

“Over the next 50 years, coastal hazards, including exacerbated storms, coastal erosion, sea level rise, groundwater level rise and seawater intrusion into groundwater aquifers could cause the ISFSI to be directly exposed to seawater and/or freshwater,” the report states.

Such degradation of the concrete, the report continues, could make the ISFSI more vulnerable to earthquakes and missiles, as well as impact the eventual “retrievability” of the canisters from the facility.

SoCal Edison, Dobken said, disagrees with the report’s assessment that the ISFSI’s concrete is porous to sea water and would cause

it to degrade, noting that concrete is used in numerous set applications such as dams, bridges and oil rigs.

In addition to federal legislation recommendations, the report also calls for state policies and regulatory oversight.

In 2017, 73rd District Assemblymember Bill Brough pursued legislation (AB 1207) to create a state-led task force, comprising the California Nuclear Transport Working Group, to assess and review the efficacy of the current regulations in minimizing the risks to public health and safety resulting from the transportation of hazardous radioactive materials.

“That bill, however, was shelved by the Senate Rules Committee,” Brough said.

“Now, almost three years later, there is a report which suggests that state agencies should coordinate with one another more and increase engagement between state and federal agencies.”

Sen. Patricia Bates, who serves the 36th State Senate District, has been in communication with Levin’s office regarding SONGS and has authored several pieces of legislation regarding storage and decommissioning.

Senate Joint Resolution (SJR) 11 was introduced to support federal efforts to safely relocate nuclear waste. Senate Bill 465 addressed emergency preparedness, but it is no longer needed due to a voluntary agreement between SCE and five local government agencies. The stakeholders announced that they would continue their longstanding collaborative emergency preparedness activities related to SONGS. The five jurisdictions are the counties of Orange and San Diego, and the cities of San Clemente, Dana Point, and San Juan Capistrano.

“The reality is that the jurisdiction of the federal government in this area is vast,” Levin said. “I’d like to see more state engagement.

I’ve been in touch with state senators as well about the report, and we’ll be sending it out. . . . It’s important that we continue to engage with the state.”

Levin added that he intends to visit Sacramento as soon as it is safe to do so in order to meet with state stakeholders.

“I think having a report and having a description of all the challenges and opportunities that we have is an important step,” Levin said.

Lewis said the assembly of the task force and the report are both steps in a positive direction, and now this report will establish short- and long-term initiatives. “(Levin) is an environmental lawyer. For him, this was a critical priority, and he dug in and said, ‘I’m going to do something about this, because it’s been neglected and it could be a critical problem,’ ” Lewis said.

The Declaration of Independence: What It Meant in 1776 and What It Means Today

n July 4 each year, Americans around the country gather to celebrate Independence Day, a holiday that commemorates the adoption of one of the most important documents in our nation’s history—the Declaration of Independence.

It was on this day in 1776 that the Second Continental Congress announced the separation of 13 North American British colonies from Great Britain. However, the actual vote to declare independence from Great Britain took place two days earlier on July 2. In a letter to his wife, Abigail, John Adams proudly and jubilantly declared: “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty.

It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

The final wording of the Declaration of Independence wasn’t adopted until July 4,

paving the way for our country to chart its own course for self-governance.

At that time, the people wanted a government that, in the words of John Adams, would “think, feel, reason, and act” like the people they governed, not unlike we do today. Some of the phrases of the declaration have consistently exerted profound influence in our country, especially the proclamation: “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of THE BARTLETT Happiness.”

shame on Mayor Richard Viczorek and all but one city council member for not requiring the wearing of face masks in Dana Point before Gov. Gavin Newsom mandated the practice. And shame on Sheriff Don Barnes for declaring that the OC Sheriff's Department won't enforce the order. The consequences of their willful ignorance and self-interest are the pain and suffering of their constituents and all of the residents of Orange County. I sincerely hope their infamy precludes them from ever holding public office again.

I am angry that Supervisor Lisa Bartlett and the other Orange County Supervisors rejected the findings of medical science and scientists regarding the use of face masks to slow the spread of COVID-19.

I found their behavior pressured Dr. Nichole Quick to resign. They disagreed with her medical knowledge and then they paid her off to be silent. The Supervisors' obsequious behavior toward OC business power brokers at the expense of health protocols and best practices that benefit the residents of Orange County is embarrassing and irresponsible.

I believe the OC Supervisors are, however, responsible for the rise in COVID-19 cases in Orange County. In addition,

been true in the eyes of their Creator, but in the eyes of man, history shows us this was not the case.

The America of 1776 was vastly different from the America of 2020, yet the principles and teachings of the Declaration of Independence still guide us to this very day. Over the centuries, our country has strived and made tremendous progress in ensuring the phrase “all men are created equal” is far more inclusive now than it was back then. While much has been accomplished, many challenges and opportunities lie ahead.

As we rightfully celebrate the birth of our nation and the principles upon which our great country was founded, let us always remember that this joyous occasion would never have come to pass, if but for the sacrifices, courage and tremendous resolve of all those who came before us.

classroom. They need to breathe, and they need constant oxygen to feed their brain.

Maybe instead of thermometers in the classrooms, teachers should have oximeters in the classrooms to measure oxygen levels of our children.

As a teacher of over 20 years, I am being completely serious here. I’m truly worried about the oxygen starvation in our little (and big) guys if they are required to wear masks when they return to school.

However, I believe a letter written by Lisa Lynch published in the June 12-18, 2020 edition regarding “political flags in the Dana Point Harbor” is loaded with “hearsay/ or insinuate factually inaccurate information.” Her statements about what the flags represent for “many” Americans is conjecture and is exploding with fake news talking points.

I am surprised the author didn’t include “collusion of the flags by the Russians.”

Our President of the United States is doing an amazing job for all US citizens and is doing it with an incredible amount of resistance, obstruction and abuse of power against him and his policies.

Bias or one-way censorship in America today is a threat to our democracy, and it should be consistent to either viewpoint.

Freedom of speech (including flags) is a constitutional right, even in “a public space.” I would hope this time you will publish this letter.

This note is in support of our government leaders who are doing the best they can, having been faced with an unprecedented pandemic, no “rule book” to follow, and various constituencies with conflicting needs.

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s decision to shut down the economy was gutsy, strategic and risky politically. It was the right thing to do at that time, and “flattened the curve.” It was recently just as important to begin opening up the economy. According to a recent poll from the Public Policy Institute of California, about 70% of California adults were in favor of keeping current restrictions in place.

What is “freedom” in this pandemic? Is it the freedom to open one’s business, and make a living? Absolutely, assuming that Dana Point Times June 26-July 2, 2020

sensible precautions are taken to make it safe. But are those not infected with COVID-19 enjoying freedom when forced in close contact with others who could be infected, yet who disrespect social distancing and refuse to wear a mask? Certainly not.

Since 35% of those with the virus don’t realize they are carrying it (according to the Centers for Disease Control’s best estimate), when they refuse to wear masks in public, they are passing it on.

Peggy Noonan—the distinguished speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan—said it best in a recent Wall Street Journal article.

“We have to cooperate by doing the things that contain the illness so that businesses can stay open and functioning. A mask isn’t a sign of submission. . . . It’s a sign of respect, responsibility and economic encouragement. It says, ‘I’ll do my small part.’ ” Recently, I have seen large crowds at certain indoor establishments; almost no one was wearing a mask, and there was no social distancing. If this sort of reckless conduct continues, there will almost certainly be a “second wave”—potentially far worse than the first. What would that do to our economy and freedom?

Consider that nothing has yet changed: (1) there is no COVID-19 vaccine; (2) there is no cure; and (3) unlike past viruses, many carrying it are asymptomatic.

We must get moving quickly in a safe and responsible manner. Changes in our daily routines are required. Wear a mask. Respect your neighbors—and your own health.

Five Tips on How to Find Love After 50

inding love after 50 is difficult, unless you get lucky, and someone enters your life unexpectedly. Finding love is like seeking employment. It takes work, energy and commitment.

To help you through the maze, here are five tips for finding love after 50: 1. Create a written finding-loveafter-50 plan. Include in your plan a personal profile—think of it as your resume. But this profile isn’t for publication; it’s for your eyes only, to guide you in your task. Itemize your strengths and interests. But also include items in which you can improve, such as getting more exercise and eating healthier.

Include a section in your plan titled “Qualities,” which has two parts. Part one: Qualities you seek in a mate. For example: “He makes me his top priority,” or “He is kind, warm and caring,” or “He respects his mother.”

Part two: Qualities or traits you won’t tolerate—deal breakers. Examples: Smoking, drug use, heavy drinking, moodiness, or a dislike of animals.

5. Search online. The Internet is another dating tool, a way to reach out beyond your geographical area to meet new people. In my book, How 50 Couples Found Love After 50, half of the couples met online. There are positives and negatives. Every dating site has scammers, and one must be careful when online dating. Ask for guidance from friends, dating coaches, or even me. Trust your instincts. Be careful.

With a solid written plan, you’ll improve your chances of meeting a potential mate.

Generic Drugs Not Always Equivalent, Sometimes Dangerous

Families Deserve Straight Talk About Nursing Home Safety

T

he coronavirus headlines have been grim. Seventeen bodies piled up in the morgue at a New Jersey nursing home. Fifty-five residents dead in Brooklyn, N.Y. In one week, 104 residents dead in a facility in western Pennsylvania and 102 dead at a home in San Antonio.

Residents in nursing homes had been at risk long before we began reporting on them in the 1990s, and care facilities have continued to be the subject of press inquiry all across the country.

Staffing shortages, poor care, and outright abuse had been the stuff of media exposes for years, long before anyone had heard of the coronavirus.

The usual response? Nursing homes that got into trouble promised to clean up their act, engaging in what came to be called yo-yo compliance with state and federal regulations.

Nursing facilities with numerous deficiencies in caregiving would promise to make recommended changes and improve conditions. But promises were just that. Often, they did not result in permanent or meaningful change. A facility would get into trouble again.

The nursing home story today is different: 100 dead residents at one facility in one week when even 55 or 25 would be highly unusual. Casualties during the coronavirus pandemic raise serious questions about infection control, testing protocols, protective equipment for staff, and the number of personnel to care for residents who are intrinsically vulnerable.

Most visitors have been prohibited since the pandemic began, making it more important than ever that the public has access to information about complaints, infection rates, and staffing at their local nursing facilities.

The public needs someone or some agency to be their eyes and ears to help them learn what’s happening on the inside.

Florida, like a lot of other states, had refused to release numbers of nursing home residents who died from the virus, and it has been something of a national struggle for families and the media to get this information. Marbin Miller’s newspaper, along with other media outlets, threatened legal action, and eventually the state agreed to release the death counts.

At the end of the first week of May, the state reported 665 people had died in the state’s nursing homes and assisted living facilities, an increase of 242 Dana Point Times June 26–July 2, 2020

from the previous week. Fourteen facilities reported more than 10 deaths.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the federal agency that oversees Medicare and the country’s nursing homes, issued “guidance” requiring the country’s nursing facilities to be more transparent.

Beginning May 17, nursing homes were required to report their COVID-19 cases to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and to families and residents already in nursing facilities. Presumably, this information will be on the CDC and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services websites and in the states, too.

Earlier this spring, Kaiser Health News offered a glimpse of what nursing home inspectors found when they visited facilities across the country. Infection control was a problem before the days of the coronavirus.

In the past three years, 61 percent of about 9,400 nursing facilities sampled were cited for one or more infection control deficiencies. Sixty-three percent of about 9,700 were cited for infection control deficiencies on their last two standard government surveys.

Even nursing homes with five-star ratings from the government, presumably a designation of high quality, have had problems. It turns out 40 percent of those facilities were cited for infection control lapses.

Results like these suggest families with relatives already in nursing facilities, or those about to place a relative in one, should look long and hard at the new data available.

“A society’s quality and durability can best be measured by the respect and care given to its elderly citizens,” British historian Arnold Toynbee once warned.

As insurance companies push doctors to save money by switching their patients to generic drugs, complaints about those generics appear to be on the upswing. That’s the observation of journalist Katherine Eban, who has written a book, Bottle of Lies, that tells a very dark tale about the generic drug industry and the safety of generic drugs Americans are increasingly taking.

“My inbox is full of communications from patients who were on a drug that worked but were switched to a generic that didn’t work,” she told Community Health News Service.

“Patients find themselves on a medical odyssey.”

She illustrated her point with a case from a major U.S. hospital transplant center where transplant patients who were switched to an immunosuppressant drug made in India suffered organ rejection.

One died, and the other had a “tough stay in the ICU,” Eban said. She also noted the plight of one woman whose depression was stabilized on a brand drug but whose condition worsened when the pharmacist switched her to a generic.

Hundreds of patients have told Eban that they don’t do well on some of the generics and have no clue why.

It’s important to understand the rules of the new pharmaceutical game you’re being asked to play.

That game is increasingly focused on the ingredients that go into generic drugs, which are mainly coming from India and China, where Eban’s book shows that good manufacturing practices are often ignored in the name of profits.

Eban described the generic drug industry abroad as a “maze of global deception.”

One company, for example, deceived regulators around the world by submitting fraudulent data that made its drugs appear bioequivalent to brand name drugs. “We are dependent on distant drug manufacturers,” Eban wrote, “yet have little visibility into their methods.”

Eban also found that Americans can’t rely on the FDA to assure that generics made abroad are safe. Although the agency reviewed data from foreign generic drug makers and inspected their plants, it was not systematically testing the drugs. Yet, she pointed out that some 40 percent of the U.S. generic drugs are made in India.

Eighty percent of the active ingredients in all of our drugs, brand or generic, are made in India or China.

What Eban uncovered helps explain why a generic drug a doctor had prescribed doesn’t work as well as a brand drug.

Maybe it has been adulterated to save money and increase profits for the manufacturer.

So how do patients protect themselves if some generic drugs are unsafe?

Eban suggests learning more about the manufacturer of your drug. The drug maker is typically listed on the dispensing label. Find out if the manufacturer has been in trouble with the FDA by looking at the inspections, compliance, and enforcement sections of the agency’s website. If the company has received a warning, that’s a red flag.

It’s not possible, however, to find out where your drug was made. No law requires a drug maker to disclose the country of origin for either the ingredients or the manufacturing of the drug itself.

You can also find out if others are complaining about a particular generic that is not working properly. If they are, that helps build the case to get your doctor to switch you to a different brand. REATA GLEN: Taking Care of the People In the retirement community of Reata Glen in Rancho Mission Viejo, the residents do more than sit in chairs. They collect and donate clothes, as they did back in February when the Working Wardrobes warehouse in Irvine burned down in a fire. They enjoy live music. They stay active with fitness programs.

Residents have also participated in fitness programs from their balconies, with fitness instructors guiding them through movements while far away.

“We have private concerts,” Austin said. “We hire musicians for Reata Glen, record them and then show it to residents.”

Staff even delivered margaritas and chips and salsa to residents for Cinco de Mayo, as well as treats on Mother’s Day. Reata Glen is slowly reopening its library so residents can resume checking out books, and has also reopened the computer lab.

A video on the Reata Glen website features residents talking about how the community has simplified their lives, ensured they avoided being potentially exposed to the virus and the continual health monitoring they receive from staff.

Staff members also spoke about how they can arrange doctor visits and other services for residents, so they don’t have to travel outside and risk contracting the virus.

“They have a very enriched lifestyle,” Austin said. “I’ve often heard we’re a cruise ship on land. They’re very well taken care of.”

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, activities also included constant live music, dance and art classes, bridge and card games, and weekly excursions, according to life enrichment director Jayne Austin. Residents have been guided on historical walks and visited the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

“We’d have movies every day, fitness classes, everything from yoga to tai chi,” Austin said. “We offered bocce ball, tennis and pickleball.”

Obviously, the COVID-19 pandemic has temporarily changed that. Staff is continually monitoring conditions and ensuring residents stay safe, and some amenities are slowly reopening. Residents are still getting to participate in recommended activities and fitness routines, this time through an in-house channel provided through their televisions. Cycling, walking and jogging have been popular with residents.

Whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables should fill your plate for three meals each day, along with a snack or two, depending on your activity level. Proteinrich foods are encouraged with each eating opportunity, which can include lean cuts of meat, fish, poultry; nonfat or low-fat dairy options including eggs, and plant-rich sources such as tofu and other soy-based foods.

And don’t forget the need for healthy fats to help with all of the metabolic pathways and absorption of essential fat-soluble vitamins such as olive oil, avocado, and nuts/seeds.

The items you didn’t see me list for your everyday food consumption were things I consider treats and splurges such as cakes, cookies, and ice cream. While I have no issue with a lovely dessert choice for special occasions, I do suggest clients who have health and weight concerns should limit those items. And I must confess, I do encourage clients to avoid at all costs, sodas (both diet and sugar-laden) and ultraprocessed foods, that can live on the shelf or

t’s safe to say movie-related news these days is more unexpected and random than usual, what with movie theaters in some areas now given the approval to reopen. There are still a few things to consider with this sudden and surprising news.

One is that not every state is even at the same stage of phasing in businesses and public places, so profit-wise, there won’t be as much box-office potential with only a portion of the country’s or world’s theaters open.

Another consideration is whether theaters even are game to reopen right now. There will, of course, be pressure to make some temporary changes to the building’s occupancy parameters, plus new rules related to sanitizing the establishment. And it’s also reasonable to assume the studios probably weren’t expecting so many things to go back to “normal” so quickly after already rescheduling so many releases for the holiday season or for next year.

Warner Bros. choosing to hold out Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi espionage film Tenet as long as it could to be the first big summer movie is turning out to have paid off, as its current plans are to only hold it back two weeks for a late July release.

Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984, on the other hand, has WB deciding to completely abandon a summer release for a third time and go for an October release date instead.

One thing I’ve noticed in the past couple of weeks, with each new announcement of ever-changing release dates, is how the delays are getting shorter and shorter. Back in March, nearly every spring release was postponed six to 12 months or even indefinitely, but now new release dates are being reported as oneto three-week delays.

Whatever the results are in the end for the film and theater industries, let’s just hope the rest of the ever-changing world miraculously falls in line just as quickly. DP danapointtimes.com

Food for Thought: Would You Like a Quarantine Do-Over?

W

e are just starting to come up for air after experiencing unprecedented times together. Over the past few days, I have had conversations with several individuals who said they wish they could have a redo on this time at home due to behaviors they employed that they consider less than stellar.

In my world, we have spoken in jest about people gaining the “COVID-15,” as those extra pounds just seemed to have crept up on us. But let me remind you that this is no different than a holiday season where you might have overindulged and failed to find time to exercise.

Instead of beating yourself up, I encourage you to learn from past behaviors and let healthful changes begin today.

If you have read my previous columns every month, you know I feel pretty strongly about using your food to drive your health, and that weight loss should not lead your way.

But let’s get real, the majority of prospective clients come to me for help with weight loss. And while I have the game

plan to help them reach that goal, I refuse to do it at the detriment of that individual, so conversations ensue regarding their dieting history.

What I hear most often is the statement, “But the diet worked for me”—that is, until I ask for details. The common theme with each “diet success” was that while on the “diet,” due to calorie and food group restrictions, often paired with restricted eating times, people lost weight.

But there are repercussions to all behaviors, good and bad, and in this case, this punitive and restrictive eating pattern, while easy to follow temporarily, is impossible to stick to for the long haul and can cause detrimental shifts in our metabolism. In other words, everyone gains the weight back, and potentially more.

It is here that I try to help them look at the risks versus benefits and pros and cons of the diet mentality that has guided them throughout their lives, and challenge them to answer the question: “Are you ready to get off the diet rollercoaster?”

With these conversations, we could have discussed the multibillion-dollar health industry with its plethora of pills, potions and products that we have funded throughout our lifetimes, asking, “Why not just try the next fad or trend?”

But instead, I just keep reminding you why it is time to consider a more wholesome, healthful, and long-term approach, versus another temporary quick-fix.

One consideration is the knowledge we have gained from current clinical trials during this pandemic. We are just seeing the tip of the iceberg, but we know that those who suffer from preexisting conditions who contract this virus are at higher risk for death once put on a ventilator.

In a recently published study of 5,700 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the New York area, data showed that “hypertension, obesity, and diabetes are among the most prevalent co-morbidities

Fall Sports Positions Hold in CIF-SS Division Groupings While the direction and fate of the fall sports season remain uncertain, the CIFSouthern Section continued to prepare for business-as-usual with the June 11 release of the 2020 playoff division groupings for boys water polo, girls volleyball, girls tennis and cross country.

In the other two fall sports, football will debut a new playoff division this season with divisions being created after the regular season based on power rankings of this season’s results, and girls golf will operate

with geographic regional divisions rather than numbered or ranked divisions.

The plans for all fall sports competitions will be determined by July 20.

For the Dana Hills teams, their division placements all remained the same for the 2020 fall sports season.

In the boys water polo power rankings, the Dolphins actually improved their position slightly to maintain their hold in the Division 1 and 2 grouping. Boys water polo’s divisions are based on the Massey Ratings system and rank teams through a computer model that factors in game results, margin of victory and strength of schedule.

Despite a shorter playoff run and slightly worse record in 2019 than in 2018, Dana Hills’ rating improved from 11.2 to 13.7 for a two-year average of 13.2 to stay in Division 1 and 2. The Dolphins finished 14-15 and lost in the first round to Los Alamitos in 2019 after finishing 18-12 with a run to the Division 2 semifinals in 2018.

Dana Hills girls volleyball also maintained a Division 1 and 2 group placement. The Dolphins dropped from a 59.12 power ranking in 2018 to a 27.32 ranking in 2019, but Dana Hills is still snugly in that top group.

Dana Hills went 18-14 in 2018 with a Division 2 first-round loss to Beckman. In

2019, Dana Hills went 23-7 with a run to the Division 2 quarterfinals.

Dana Hills girls tennis took a major drop in 2019, but the Dolphins held on to their Division 2 placement. In 2018, the Dolphins were runner-up in CIF-SS Division 2 and compiled a 25.57 power ranking, but in 2019, graduation losses sent the Dolphins to a 4-15 record with an 11.62 power ranking.

Cross country’s division groupings are not based on power rankings, as it is one of the last CIF-SS sports to still be grouped according to school enrollment.

Dana Hills is listed as staying in Division

2 based on its 2019-20 enrollment of 2,333 students, but this division placement is subject to change when the 2020-21 enrollment is reported in October. Dana Hills had been in Division 1 in 2018 before dropping to Division 2 in 2019. Division 1 enrollment is 2,481 and larger, with Division 2 holding schools between 2,051 and 2,480 students.

The drop down to Division 2 didn’t slow down the Dolphins or ease up on the competition, as Dana Hills took second place at both the CIF-SS and CIF State championships against some of the nation’s best runners at Newbury Park. DP

How to Surf Better When chasing surf dreams, a good coach can make a huge difference

F

or generations, prodigious talent from San Clemente and Dana Point has grown up ripping our local beaches.

As they got older and stronger and their skills in the water blossomed, they’d go marching off to foreign shores to prove themselves against the world’s best surfers.

In the ’80s, the movement was led by the likes of Dino Andino, Christian Fletcher and Matt Archbold at T-Street. In the ’90s, it was Pat O’Connell and the Salt Crew. And as we slid into the new millennium, a whole host of fresh-faced new talent abounded with the Long brothers, Nate Yeomans, and the Gudauskas boys fronting the charge.

Today, the talent pool is as deep as it’s ever been at spots such as Trestles and Salt Creek. This area has become the hotbed for up-and-coming surf talent in the U.S. And as young groms look to improve, the older, more experienced surfers are stepping up with an opportunity to share their expertise through coaching and mentoring.

“I want to inspire people to realize that they are capable of achieving things that they didn’t think was possible,” says Brandon Phillips, who is an assistant coach of the United States National Surf Team, as well as the founder of Vert Performance.

“I’ve been the athlete. I’ve gone through injuries, enjoyed success and experienced failure,” Phillips said. “I’ve had good mentors and bad influences. What moved me to go

all in with Vert Performance was when I was doing marketing for the brand Etnies. I would be gone on trips, come home and surf and see kids coming up. Every time I left and came home, I felt like there were more kids in the water and progressing quickly.”

Phillips takes a more holistic approach with his coaching, aware of the fact that it’s not just how good somebody is with a surfboard under their feet but also how strong they are in their mind. There are a lot of people who can ride a surfboard well, but it’s often the mental side of the sport that’s the difference maker in the heat of competition or when the waves are really pumping.

“To be better today than you were yesterday, that’s the goal,” Phillips said.

“If someone comes through Vert and feels more confident and has a greater selfworth, the job is accomplished.

“I like to tell my students to focus on what you can control. Let go of all the uncontrollable factors and focusing on what’s within your control is critical. It’s also important to stop comparing yourself to others in the water. If you are measuring your progress based off others’ ability, it’s only setting you back. Keep moving

forward, onward and upward.”

Besides young surfers developing mental fortitude, there are concrete steps they can take to improve. From the equipment they ride to the activities they do when they’re not in the water, it all makes a difference.

“I think getting on the right boards and surfing spots that match your ability is pretty critical. The goal to building skill is to catch waves. The more waves you catch, the more you practice the technical stuff and the more you progress,” Phillips said.

“A lot of people get hung up on a certain style of board or surfing a certain spot.

Look for the uncrowded spots to give you room to focus and apply the coaching.”

Skateboarding is another big part of Phillips’ and Vert Performance’s program.

Street skating was originally created by surfers looking to go “sidewalk surfing.”

“Skating offers the ability to repeatedly practice a trick, technique or whatever it may be until they get it,” Phillips said.

“Waves are unpredictable, and the consistency of the skatepark provides what the ocean doesn’t. Plus, you can tuck into a tree branch barrel any time of day!”

At the end of the day, a good surf coach

understands that there’s a wider world out of the water, and success in the surf can translate to success in life.

“I’m here to be a mentor and a teacher.

I’m here to encourage and build up people of all abilities to succeed in and out of the water. It’s bigger than surfing,” Phillips said.

For those looking to dive in a little deeper and get serious about their surfing, Phillips and his crew at Vert are happy to share what they’re doing with the community.

“We have a youth group every Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Calvary Chapel San Clemente,” said Phillips. “It’s a safe place for kids and parents to hang out, skate, eat food and grow their faith in God. It’s always open to anyone who wants to cruise.”

oving to a new town is never easy, and it’s especially challenging when you’re 11 years old and your world’s turned upside down by a global pandemic. Even so, Marlo Harris handled the challenge like an absolute champion.

“We moved to Dana (Point) two weeks before the COVID-19 closure, and I had only three more months of fifth grade left, so I told my mom to homeschool me, because I really wanted to focus on surfing in the mornings,” said Marlo, who’s been ripping down at Salt Creek through all of this. “I hope that school will reopen in the fall and that I can surf for a middle school team.”

place, Marlo is working hard to accomplish some lofty goals.

“Someday, I will be the first Native American girl on the USA Team—someday soon,” she said.

And in terms of what inspires Marlo to get out in the ocean and get after it, the list

is long and amazing: “Beautiful sunny days inspire me,” she said. “Glassy water inspires me. Poipu inspires me. Barrels inspire me. Sea life inspires me. Storm swells inspire me. Saving the ocean inspires me. Oh, and also watching Lawn Patrol on WSL gets me psyched!” DP
