Five things Dana Point should know this week Community Gets to Glance at Designs for Harbor THE LATEST: The Dana Point Harbor Partners (DPHP) invited members of the community to see and provide input on design concepts for the Dana Point Harbor revitalization on Monday, Aug. 19 at Ocean Institute.

At least 150 people gathered in the Samueli Lecture Hall & Conference Center to see the latest conceptualizations for a new and improved harbor. Poster boards displayed colors and materials, landscape designs, ideas for patios, trellises and seating, future events and programmable areas, tenants, and overall look and feel.

Members of the community, as well as Dana Point City Council and Planning Commission, attended the event. While the partners entered a 66-year lease agreement with County of Orange to develop the harbor, officials with City of Dana Point have provided support.

“Coastal Development Permits (CDPs) have already been obtained for the commercial core portion of the project,” said Matt Schneider, Director of Community Development. “The city remains a stakeholder, and we are working with the partners along the way.”

Dana Point Mayor Joe Muller stated that it was monumental for the partners to be hosting the event.

“After 20 years of talking about how to get this done, the partners are really following through,” Muller said. “It’s incredible to see everything in motion after so much time. We are seeing history in the making.”

Staff with SMS Architects stood beside the vision boards to answer questions and concerns that community members had.

People with feedback had the opportunity to fill out forms to give anonymous input on the designs.

“We want to keep it simple but authentic to what Dana Point is to its residents.

We want to create a space where people can hang out at the harbor and enjoy it for more reasons than one,” Rosso said.

“We want the space to be as inviting as possible. We can achieve that with lighting and seating, or with doors with a bi-fold, or garage-style or glass.”

“We will use that as an impetus to finalize designs and address questions,” Ward said.

New Police Chief for Dana Point After Sheehan’s Transfer THE LATEST: Dana Point will have a new Chief of Police, following the transfer of Lieutenant Margie Sheehan.

Kirsten Monteleone, of Orange County Sheriff’s Department, will formally join Dana Point’s police services on Aug. 30.

Lt. Sheehan will go on to serve as the executive aide to Sheriff Don Barnes.

“Lt. Sheehan has been a tremendous asset to Dana Point and she will be missed.

Her dedication to the community was evident in all she did,” said Mark Denny, Dana Point City Manager. “We wish her the very best as she moves up into the Sheriff’s Office and congratulate her for taking on more leadership responsibility in the Orange County Sheriff’s Depart-

ment.”

Sheehan took over leadership in Dana Point after Lt. Russ Chilton retired in the spring of 2018. She carries about 25 years of experience working in law enforcement, including serving in the United States Marine Corps at El Toro Air Station.

According to a press release issued by the City of Dana Point, Monteleone is 24year veteran of law enforcement. Her previous experience in Dana Point includes patrol operations and serving as the Administrative Deputy. She has worked in a variety of operational assignments including court operations, corrections, field training bureau and Strategy Accountability Focus Evaluation (SAFE) Division.

Monteleone holds a Master of Science degree in Emergency Services Management from California State University, Long Beach, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Fullerton.

“Like Lt. Sheehan before her, Lt. Monteleone will also have some big shoes to fill and I am confident in her ability to exceed Dana Point’s expectations for leadership of our police force,” Denny said. “Her previous experience in Dana Point will serve her well, as will her drive and professionalism. We are very proud to be able to continue to attract quality leaders from the Sheriff’s Department like Lt. Sheehan and Lt. Monteleone.”—LB

Union, Grocery Workers Demonstrate at Ralphs Stores for Better Wages THE LATEST: The United Food and Commercial Workers organized demonstrations at several Ralphs stores in San Clemente and Dana Point on Tuesday,

Aug. 20, as part of a 10-day protest within the region to demand fair wages and better treatment for grocery store workers.

Diana Huffman, UFCW Union Local 324 union representative, said the union and grocery store workers are calling on executives from Ralphs, Vons, Albertsons and Pavilions to pay their workers a fair, livable wage.

“The employees are a little upset that Ralphs gave their executives a 32% wage increase in the beginning of the year, and they’re offering less than 1% to their employees,” Huffman said.

Greg Conger, the union president for UFCW 324, said negotiations with the grocery store executives seem to be going nowhere.

“So now we are taking the next steps in notifying customers of a potential strike,” he said.

Conger said that contracts expired March 3 and the union has been negotiating on and off since then.

After the latest round of talks, UFCW stated on its website that the union had presented several comprehensive proposals on health care and wages, but management’s response was to offer (employees) only another nickel a year.

“We are not asking to hit the jackpot,” said Huffman. In today’s economy, she said grocery store workers are struggling to survive and provide for their families on current wages, which she said hover between $12 and $15 an hour.

Representing grocery workers across Southern California, UFCW 324’s goal is to help protect and improve the livelihood of all workers, according to its website, ufcw324.org.

On Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., UFCW 324 union representatives and workers held protests outside the Ralphs on South El Camino Real and Camino De Los Mares, as well as at the Ralphs store on Golden Lantern in Dana Point. Later in the day, demonstrations were scheduled at the Ralphs on Avenida Talega and on Del Prado in Dana Point.

Conger said this is the first time the union is rolling out a text-message notification system to customers. Early warning alerts will be issued to subscribed cell phone numbers six hours ahead of a strike.

“We’re asking for maintenance of our health care plans, pension plan, and a reasonable wage increase. And we’re asking for customer support. As a courtesy to our customers, we want them to be able to plan ahead in the event of a strike,” Conger said.

John Votava, a spokesperson for Ralphs, provided a statement on behalf of the company.

Votava added that customers “will find all Ralphs stores throughout Southern California accessible, fully stocked with fresh merchandise and staffed.”

WHAT’S NEXT: The UFCW Local 324, which is based in Buena Park, plans to take its protests north, demonstrating at 190 stores within the region to alert as many customers as possible, according to union representatives. NRC Holds Town Hall Meeting One Year after Canister Incident THE LATEST: A community meeting on spent nuclear fuel storage somehow led to an audience member passing out a basketful of lemons, as well as the meeting’s facilitator telling an individual to “go back to your camera!”

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission held a town hall meeting at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center on Tuesday, Aug. 20 to provide updates on its oversight of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).

The forum comes more than a year after an incident involving a canister carrying spent nuclear fuel had occurred at SONGS. During the incident on Aug. 3, 2018, the canister was being placed into a vertical receptacle but wasn’t aligned properly, causing it to get stuck on a guiding ring.

Southern California Edison, the owner of the decommissioned power plant, and its contractor Holtec International, which built the canisters for spent fuel at SONGS, halted downloading operations, prompting a nearly yearlong effort to make corrective actions.

Edison has said that in the months following the incident, it had reviewed its transfer operations and adjusted its program to include updated procedures, implement “better training” and add “more intrusive oversight.”

The NRC penalized SCE with a fine of $116,000 this past March. Two months later, the Commission gave Edison the green light to start transferring spent fuel into dry storage again, determining that operations could be safely resumed.

continuing efforts to place the plant’s nuclear waste into a dry storage facility.

During the town hall, members of the NRC panel reiterated that adequate measures have been taken since the canister incident. Greg Warnick, chief of the NRC’s reactor inspection branch, led a presentation on corrective steps taken in the past year.

Scott Morris, the regional administrator for NRC, gave opening remarks emphasizing the NRC’s independence and credibility.

“We are your public servants,” Morris said. “You deserve a strong independent nuclear regulator, and we achieve that by adhering to our principles of regulation.”

Throughout the town hall, Morris received the brunt of criticism and interruptions from the audience.

“To ensure that policies were developed and implemented correctly, starting at the beginning of July, the NRC has performed five unannounced inspections to review and observe all licensing activities,” said Warnick. “The NRC concluded that Southern California Edison could safely resume fuel transfer operations at SONGS in a manner that was compliant with regulatory requirements. The NRC continues to conduct rigorous oversight of licensed activities of the site and will routinely report inspection results to the public.”

A total of 49 speakers signed up to address the representatives of the NRC. 49th District Congressman Mike Levin, whose district includes San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente and Dana Point, kicked off the public-comment portion of the meeting. “(San Onofre) is not your typical site because of the population density. Therefore, you shouldn’t have your typical protocol,” Levin said. “Restoring public trust requires that you take precautions that are not just adequate.”

Levin called for there to be inspectors for every canister that has to be loaded, not just the eight that have been inspected so far.

There are a total of 42 canisters left that need to be loaded. Work to load Canister 32 out of a total of 73 begins the end of this month.

Several of the speakers who addressed the NRC representatives expressed concerns over the thickness of the canisters, the lack of inspections for each canister, and the NRC’s abilities in holding SONGS accountable. The Holtec canisters on site are 5/8 inches thick. Several speakers called for canisters with a thickness of 10-20 inches.

“I’d like to invite the audience to come up and grab a lemon and give them to the NRC representatives to show that the Holtec system is a lemon,” one speaker said, holding a basket full of lemons. Dozens of audience members placed lemons at the desk of the panel speakers, where the lemons remained for the rest of the meeting.

tos and who identified himself as a member of Levin’s SONGS task force, yelled out at the facilitator, Chip Cameron, who was skipping over names on the list of 49 speakers and picking speakers at random.

Cameron and the individual engaged in a verbal altercation before Cameron told the man to “go back to your camera.”

The meeting had originally been scheduled to end at 8:30 p.m., but it ended up running past 9:30 p.m. The town hall was unable to accommodate all 49 speakers.

CUSD Presents Drafts of Proposed Bond Measures for School Upgrades THE LATEST: The first drafts of the Capistrano Unified School District’s proposed ballot measures to get funding to upgrade school facilities and classrooms in Dana Point and San Clemente were presented to the Board of Trustees on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Since the district’s previous $889 million Measure M bond in the 2016 election failed to gather enough support from voters, receiving only 45% approval—55% is the threshold to pass—CUSD has been considering calling for a pair of regional bond measures to be placed on the ballot for the March 2020 Primary Election.

The proposed bonds for the Western and Southern School Facilities Improvement Districts, or SFIDs, propose a tax levy of $34 for every $100,000 of assessed

property value. Only voters in those districts would have a say in whether the bonds pass.

The Western SFID encompasses a region that includes schools in Aliso Viejo, Laguna Niguel and Dana Point—excluding Capistrano Beach—while the Southern SFID incorporates San Clemente and its schools.

The Western SFID bond is expected to provide the district with $293 million in proceeds to renovate schools in that region. A large percentage of the funds raised from that bond, if passed, would pay for upgrades at Dana Hills High School, Aliso Niguel High School and Niguel Hills Middle School.

The Southern SFID is expected to yield $113 million in proceeds. If voters in San Clemente pass that bond, more than $87 million of those funds would pay for classroom renovations and new buildings at San Clemente High School.

According to the drafts of the ballot measures, campus upgrades would include repairs to old and damaged roofs, as well as cracked and worn ceilings and walls.

Money from the bonds could also be used to replace aging equipment for plumbing, electrical, gas and other utility systems and replace playground equipment, among other things.

The drafts also note that none of the proceeds from the bonds would go toward salaries for teachers and administrators. It also anticipates the final fiscal year of the tax collection to be 2048-49.

Auschwitz Survivor to Give Lecture in Dana Point Chabad of Dana Point presents “The Ballerina of Auschwitz with Dr. Edith Eger,” beginning at 6 p.m. on Sept. 5 at Dana Hills High School. The community is invited to hear Dr. Eger speak about her experience surviving the Holocaust.

At age 16, Eger, a trained ballet dancer and gymnast, was sent to Auschwitz, a complex of concentration camps operated

by Nazi Germany during World War II. Hours after her parents were sent to the gas chamber, the “Angel of Death,” Nazi officer Dr. Josef Mengele, forced Edith to dance for his amusement—and her survival.

Edith survived multiple death camps and the death march. When the American troops liberated the camps in 1945, they found Edie barely alive in a pile of corpses.

Today, Eger is a renowned psychologist and speaker who specializes in treating patients suffering from traumatic stress disorders.

“She demonstrates, in her life and professional practice, how freedom from trauma, grief, and fear becomes possible once we confront our suffering and make the choice to heal,” states a Chabad of Dana Point press release. “Dr. Eger is a prolific author and a member of several professional associations. Her book, The Choice: Embrace the Possible, is a powerful, moving memoir, and a practical guide to healing.”

Dr. Eger has appeared on numerous television programs, including The Oprah Winfrey Show and on CNN, and was the primary subject of a Holocaust documentary that appeared on Dutch national television. She is frequently invited to speaking engagements throughout the United States and abroad.

Judge Grants City’s Motion to Dismiss Homeless Suit Claims U.S. District Court Judge Percy Anderson has dismissed claims made by homeless rights advocates in a lawsuit against several South County cities and the

county, “for lack of standing with leave to amend.”

According to the federal court order released on Monday, Aug. 12, the court further dropped the cities of Aliso Viejo, San Juan Capistrano, Irvine and Dana Point from the case, but left San Clemente and the County of Orange in the lawsuit.

“Because the Court has dropped all of the defendants except San Clemente and the County, the Court will analyze the sufficiency of the 1st AC’s (First Amended Complaint) claims against only San Clemente,” the court order states.

The court found that federal law does not allow the plaintiffs—Housing is a Human Right Orange County, Orange County Catholic Worker and Emergency Shelter Coalition, along with homeless individuals Bruce Stroebel, Duane Nichols and Darren James—to combine claims into a single action against multiple municipalities, as “each have their own ordinances . . . and other local circumstances that require individualized determinations,” according to the court order.

On July 1, the three cities of San Clemente, Aliso Viejo and San Juan Capistrano filed a motion to dismiss the Housing is a Human Rights case, which alleges the cities’ anti-camping ordinances and other laws violate homeless civil rights under the Housing Accountability Act. Judge Anderson agreed with all of the arguments advanced by the cities. In the court order, Anderson “declines to exercise supplemental jurisdiction over Plaintiff’s allegations of violations of the Housing Accountability Act.” While he dismissed the homeless advocacy groups’ claims over a “lack of standing,” he’s giving the plaintiffs an opportunity to amend their complaint.

Acting San Clemente Mayor Dan Bane helped clarify the outcome of Judge Anderson’s court order.

“Basically what (the judge) said is all of the claims in the First Amended Complaint are deficient and invalid as a matter of law,” Bane said. “He dismissed the claims, but gave the Plaintiffs an opportunity to file a Second Amended Complaint to try to state a valid claim.”

Bane added that if the homeless advocacy groups want to pursue claims against each of the other cities, “They are going to have to refile against them individually and establish standing to pursue any claims at all.”

The plaintiffs have until Sept. 16 to file a “second amended complaint” or face dismissal of the case.

OCCF Hosts Second Annual ‘Greatness Amplified’ The Orange County Community Foundation partnered with the South Coast Area Boys and Girls Club to host their second annual “Greatness Amplified” Giving Day on August 21. Their fundraiser lasted a full 24 hours in an effort to raise more than $200,000 to support Orange County-based Boys and Girls Clubs.

Fifteen Boys and Girls Clubs came together for the event. The funds raised will be dispersed throughout the various Boys and Girls Clubs, so as to support and contribute to their programs.

“Kids benefit greatly from the programs and experiences they can only get here. That’s why we say ‘Great Futures Start Here,’ ” said Terry Hughes, CEO of BGCSCA in the press release.

The First Dana Point Resort Celebrates 35 Years

T

he Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel celebrates 35 years of business this year, and general manager Bruce Brainerd says the best is yet to come.

“It started as a summer job. I found I had a passion for it. There’s something different every day,” said Brainerd, a 36-year veteran of the hospitality industry. “Hospitality gives you a blend of experience and a world of opportunities.”

Prior to Ritz-Carlton, Brainerd worked in finance for two Hyatt hotels.

Strategic Hotels & Resorts, Inc., a real estate investment trust, announced in 2006 that it was buying The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel for $330 million. At the time, Brainerd worked for Hyatt Regency La Jolla, which was also owned by Strategic Hotels & Resorts. Brainerd was asked to join the Ritz-Carlton as general manager, and he began in February 2008, just eight months shy of the Great Recession.

“I came on board with a clear mission: to reposition the property capital,” Brainerd said. “I wanted to reinvent the food and beverage operations and increase visibility in the community.”

Brainerd came on board at a pivotal moment in the hospitality industry. In October 2008, American International Group, Inc. (AIG) sponsored a luxury retreat at St. Regis Monarch Beach—a public relations pitfall that stigmatized corporate event bookings and, in turn, harmed the hospitality industry.

“It was complete chaos,” Brainerd said.

“But we invested in improvements. At the time, we were celebrating 25 years, and we really wanted to keep focus on the next 25 years.”

In Brainerd’s tenure, he says he’s worked toward maintaining the refinement and attention to detail that Ritz-Carlton is known for.

“In Ritz history, it’s been known for being formal,” Brainerd said. “It’s been important to me that we continue to be refined but also approachable. We want you to feel welcome here no matter who you are.”

The 10% transient occupancy tax remains the city’s largest revenue source, projected at $12.75 million for Fiscal Year 2020, or 32.4% of revenue. After dropping 40% during the Great Recession, Fiscal Year 2015 surpassed the pre-recession high of Fiscal Year 2008 and has continued its climb to historic highs, according to city staff.

Through the first nine months of Fiscal Year 2019, the transient occupancy tax was up 3% compared to Fiscal Year 2018.

The four resorts are partnering with Visit Dana Point and the City of Dana Point to brand the city as a tourism destination. The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel was given its namesake prior to Dana Point’s incorporation as a city, posing a unique challenge to market Dana Point as a resort destination.

“In working with the city and Visit Dana Point, we get to push our creativity in finding new ways to put Dana Point on the map,” Brainerd said.

MUST LOVE DOGS

That mentality extends to dogs, thanks to a policy change under Brainerd’s

management. Prior to his tenure, dogs were not permitted on hotel grounds. Now guests are able to bring their furry companions, just as Brainerd brings his golden retriever, Brock, with him to the office.

The Ritz now holds events like Yappy Hour, which attracts hundreds of dogs to the premises, to raise money for The Veterans Initiative of Canine Companions for Independence.

“The influence of Yappy Hour extends globally. We have guests fly in for this event,” Brainerd said, “But it’s also key in giving us a local presence. We want to support our community. And some of the best, most deserving causes are in our own backyard.”

In an effort to embrace Dana Point’s surf culture, the hotel began with a Holiday Surfboard Auction to benefit Surfers Healing, the original surf camp for children with autism, before creating a holiday surf competition.

From that, Brainerd developed The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel’s Annual Surfing Santa competition in 2010 to also benefit the nonprofit. The surf and stand-

up paddleboarding contest is a two-day event in which contestants dress like Santa or other holiday-inspired characters and battle it out in the waves of Salt Creek Beach, located directly below the resort and known as one of the best surfing destinations in Southern California. Since partnering with Surfers Healing, the resort has raised more than $390,000 for the nonprofit.

EMPLOYEES SINCE DAY ONE

A number of staff members at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel have been employed since the resort’s inception.

Brainerd says that kind of commitment to the hotel is a testament to the warm, welcoming environment The Ritz aims to create.

Penni Garcia, who began her career at the resort on Aug. 4, 1984, was initially the hotel operator—the hotel opened on Aug. 27 that year. In 1986, she was promoted to supervise The Club, an exclusive experience for luxury accommodations, and has held the position since.

“It never feels like work! (This) is my home, and all of the ladies and gentlemen that I work with are my family,” Garcia said.

Brainerd highlighted Garcia’s attention to detail and her keen memory.

“She’s so amazing at what she does.

She can remember names, your children’s names, your travel information, random things you tell her about your life,” Brainerd said. “It’s her ability to retain such details that really makes her a special part of our team. She goes above and beyond to make our guests feel special and welcome.”

Dora Juarez has worked in the resort’s gift shop since 1984. She says she enjoys meeting people from all over the world.

“So many of our guests are repeat guests, and it’s nice to see them after all these years,” Juarez said. “I enjoy watching their children grow up, and I’ve been at the resort long enough that many of them are now coming back with their grandchildren.” DP danapointtimes.com

Countywide Paid Internship Program Launches

ummertime is coming to a close, and this also means it is back-to-school season. With these new academic opportunities ahead, students are challenged to connect the lessons learned in the classroom to their everyday life and future career. The best way to apply what has been learned is through an in-depth internship program. I am a firm believer that a combination of strong educational course work, coupled with professional experience, can greatly benefit students as they transition from college to the working world.

As County Supervisor, I have advocated for a countywide paid-internship program to bolster current programs available to students. When speaking with professors, students, educational advocates and leaders, they always promote the importance of an internship. Professional internships are so valuable, many college programs require students to complete an internship prior to graduation. Unfortunately, for so many, choosing to participate in an unpaid internship while working and attending school can be extremely stressful and, for some, is simply not an option.

To help ease the burden and alleviate the stress, we have created a paid internship program. The term of the program is up to one year and is available to students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate or technical/vocational schools.

Through this county program, currently enrolled students, or those who graduated within the past six months, will have the

opportunity to gain valuable work experience in one of our 25 county departments.

They will be able to apply the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to a real-life work environment, network within their career field, and enhance their resume, all while serving the residents of Orange County. Whether it is business management, health care, project development, community resources, environmental practices, communications, or any of the professional services, an intern will gain incomparable experience with a multitude of THE BARTLETT projects and challenges BULLETIN in a professional, public

This program not only benefits our students, it also has tremendous benefit to the county. The compensation aspect of these internships will make our program more competitive than other regional and local internships, bringing in some of the best and brightest students. Getting these sharp minds into the OC family is the first step of hiring and retaining qualified individuals to provide excellent public service.

The shootings in El Paso and Dayton are the result of insane, mentally deranged psychopaths who do not speak for any “proborder control” U.S. citizen. They need to be a large part of detecting the signs prior to the manifestation of the killers’ psychotic actions.

It is time that we put the culpability of the shooters’ actions where it belongs: mental insanity that should be more-easily recognized by people closest to them and the people paid to monitor the “hate” websites. All of these insane mass shooters tend to be in two similar categories: insulation from normal societal behavior and people who forecast their deeds on social websites. If parented correctly, kids will know that “bullying” is a phase that will pass (and make them stronger in life), not an excuse to exterminate the masses.

I am neither an apologist for Donald Trump, although I voted for him, nor for the Republican Party, of which I am registered.

With that said, the fact that liberals/Democrats are looking at these latest shootings as the result of Trump's anti-immigration stance and conservatives’ desire to eliminate illegal immigration is ridiculous.

We can argue about the impact to our country with respect to illegal immigration, with liberals saying that it has a positive financial impact; conservatives saying that it costs billions of dollars to sanction the more than 25 million “undocumented.” Liberals are giving instructions to illegal immi-

The new countywide paid-internship program will launch on Sept. 17, where I will be joining our Human Resources team to present the new program to internship coordinators and program liaisons from all of the colleges, universities and trade schools around OC. Once implemented, internship opportunities will be advertised on the county’s jobs webpage. There will be three classes of interns with specific requirements: • Undergraduate Intern, $14/hr, enrolled or recent graduate from an AA or BA degree program; • Graduate Intern, $19/hr, must be enrolled or recent graduate from an advanced degree program; and • Technical Intern, $19/hr, currently enrolled or recent graduate from an accredited, post-secondary education or technical/vocational institution.

The county is always striving to create the greatest opportunities for our residents to live, work, and play, and this program is just one way to try and make that happen.

We are excited to help launch the career of future county employees and look forward to welcoming them to our county family.

At the Movies: ‘Blinded by the Light’ Brings a Cool Vibe

irector Gurinder Chadha’s modern classic, Bend It Like Beckham (2002), and her new film, Blinded by the Light, have some similarities, as well as quite a few unique qualities. While Bend It was about a local English-Indian girl’s passion for soccer as she tries not to feel embarrassed by her family, Blinded by the Light has the coming-of-age theme in a period piece centered on an English-Pakistani boy with a passion for writing.

In the small UK town of Luton in 1987, Javed Khan (Viveik Kalra) has a passion for poetry and journalism. He takes inspiration from everything from modern politics while Margaret Thatcher is Prime Minister to writing love notes for classmate and love interest Eliza (Nell Williams). The burdens in Javed’s life are racist bullies and his overbearing, old-fashioned father, Malik (Kulvinder Ghir), pushing him to abandon writing and get an ordinary business job. But the one thing keeping Javed going is discovering

the music of Bruce Springsteen.

Chadha, along with help from Paul Meyeda Berges and Sarfraz Manzoor on the script, crafts a near-perfect, feel-good movie. The theme of feeling saved by your favorite music is a universal one, but Blinded also puts a spin on it by setting it in a culture we don’t see very often on screen. Even if you’re not a Bruce fan—I am not, either—the use of his classics is still just as effective and uplifting. And for those who aren’t aware, the title of the film does come from Manfred Mann’s 1976 hit

GUEST OPINION: On Life and Love after 50 by Tom Blake

reta and I just completed a 10-day land tour around Ireland. We joined 25 other people from the U.S. and one man from Australia, traveling by motorcoach and staying in hotels in Dublin, Ballina, Galway, Limerick, Tralee and Waterford.

Upon arriving at our Dublin hotel, we noticed TV cameras around the lobby.

A popular Ireland TV show called First Dates was being taped there. What a funny coincidence, we thought. Thirty couples, mostly much younger than we, were matched and being interviewed.

I jokingly told one of the show’s producers that Greta and I were there for our taping. She seemed perplexed and couldn’t find our names on her list. Then I told her that I had written about dating for 25 years. I thought she might interview us, but we didn’t fit the mold.

Of course, the main reasons for coming to Ireland were the castles, history, cities, green landscape and sheer beauty.

Also, I had hoped to find genealogy information on my mom’s side of the family, some of whom I knew had come from Ireland.

Each day was very busy. Our luggage had to be placed outside the hotel room by 7 a.m., followed by a quick Irish breakfast, then on the bus by 8 or 8:30. All kinds of tourist attractions each day. Hotel check-in after 5 p.m. A group dinner most nights.

Seven different hotels in six cities.

We saw so much, it’s impossible to describe everything, so here are a few highlights.

The first stop: The Famine Museum in Strokestown. Here, the great Irish Famine of the 1840s was explained. At that time, the potato was the main food for the population of 8 million. Many were very poor and were sustained by eating only potatoes, as many as 14 pounds per person per day. A blight destroyed the Ireland potato crop. Nearly one million people starved to death.

At the museum, we read about the tragedy, saw old pictures and depictions. As I left the museum, I thought to myself, I will never complain about anything again in my life.

The messages there were that powerful.

At the 200-year old Rathbaun farm, our group made scones from scratch. While the scones were baking, we saw a border collie herd sheep and then saw a lamb sheared. Then, back inside to eat our own scones. Delicious.

In Western Ireland, our group stopped at Kylemore Abbey, a massive castle acquired by Benedictine nuns from wealthy people who had squandered their fortunes living the high life. And then a stop at a marble workshop, where Irish marble mined from nearby quarries is turned into jewelry. Many women purchased earrings and bracelets.

We stayed in the resort city of Galway for two nights. From there, we toured the Dingle Peninsula and the 100-mile Ring of Kerry along the cliffs of the Atlantic Ocean. Ate at Blake’s Bar. My favorite city: Killarney. The shops, stores, pubs were bustling with people.

My genealogy search had a surprise result. There was very little on my mom’s side, but on my dad’s side, the name Blake turned up across Ireland. At the Cliffs of Moher, a gift shop genealogy search revealed 232 people with the name Blake in County Clare and displayed the Blake coat of arms.

Our bus driver and tour group leader were both five-star performers. Sean drove us around Ireland and back to Dublin safely, navigating more than 1,000 miles of narrow curvy roads. Many times, he had to stop so oncoming traffic could inch by. Once, he had to stop for a herd of sheep crossing the road.

Barbara, the tour group leader with 28 years of experience, was pleasant, patient, organized, energetic and on top of every little detail, making the trip extremely pleasant. Her Irish expressions were priceless.

“Want to stop for a jar?” Barbara would ask. A “jar” is a drink in a pub.

Or, “Those people are having a ‘chin wag’ ”—a conversation.

She’d often say, “Today’s forecast is for ‘broken weather.’ ” Translation: sunny one minute, raining the next.

We saw hundreds of cattle and sheep, incredible historic castles and black-stone walls everywhere in the countryside.

The Irish people are warm, welcoming and friendly. The food, especially the fresh seafood, is to die for. The pints of Guinness Stout in the pubs? Well, there’s a lot less Guinness in those pub taps, now that our group has left Ireland.

Are You Bugged?

I

never hesitated to kill a bug or an insect. There was some kind of heroism in it. Then, a few years ago, I heard Karma Lekshe Tsomo, a Buddhist nun and professor at University of San Diego, elegantly talk about living in peace with nature, and I stopped the killing.

These days, have you noticed bugs and insects are setting a new trend?

According to the New York Times, “There are several qualities that may make insects attractive to consumers.

They pack a lot of protein and other nutrients per ounce, more than beef and some other protein sources. And they get good marks from a sustainability and climate perspective—they convert feed to protein very efficiently, use little water and produce only tiny amounts of greenhouse gases. (Unlike cattle, insects emit little to no methane.)” Sounds like a tofu pitch . . .

From the Orange County Fair, Daily Pilot reported on the Cooking with Bugs event by Chef Daniella Malfitano and Aly Moore of Bugible. The lime-flavored crickets and barbecue-flavored Chirps Chips tasted “good and ‘sunflower seedy’.”

According to Moore, “Scorpions taste like ‘really good salmon jerky.’ Other critters taste like oregano, ketchup, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups or even crab meat.”

Last but not least: “Should the mood strike the next time you’re browsing for a new wine to try, though, consider a peppery syrah paired with some black ants.” I’m up for any kind of syrah pairing!

I went back to the New York Times article to see what is conveniently available. “[Seek Food] sells cricket granola and other snacks, but it also sells flour mixes. . . . [Bread with ground-up cricket] had a decent texture. I brought it to the office so my Climate colleagues could try it with butter and jam. It was actually pretty tasty.”

Maybe you’re less adventurous, but you can still be trendy. Eat honey. The farmers market has honey from Oceanside. Some friends swear by local honey as an allergy remedy. Ramakrishna Monastery in Trabuco Canyon sells honey from its own beehives, but limits purchases to two bottles per customer due to high demand.

This month, my investigation on the trend got me to a book called Buzz, Sting, Bite: Why We Need Insects. An excerpt: “In Adolf Hitler’s Germany, [bee] research

was nearly brought to a halt when it had barely begun. In the 1930s, when [Karl von Frisch, a future Nobel Prize winner] was working at the University of Munich, Hitler sympathizers scoured the university’s employee roster to root out Jewish workers. When Frisch’s maternal grandmother proved to have been Jewish, he was fired. But he was rescued by a tiny parasite—one that caused a disease in bees that was in the process of wiping out Germany’s bee population. Beekeepers and colleagues managed to persuade the Nazi leadership that Frisch’s future research was crucial if German beekeeping were to be rescued. The country was at war and in dire need of all and any foodstuffs farming could produce. A collapse of the honeybee population was unthinkable. Blowfly larvae can clean difficult wounds; mealworms can digest plastic; ants have been essential to the development of antibiotics. Insects turn dead plants and COMMUNITY, SUSTAINABILITY, animals into soil. They PROSPERITY pollinate flowers,

They control pests that are harmful to humans. Life as we know it depends on these small creatures. But recent years have brought disturbing reports of extensive declines in insect numbers and diversity, which would have serious consequences for us and the planet.”

Now one more tip on being part of the trend: say no to pesticides—for bugs, insects and us. According to Non Toxic Communities, an increasing number of cities and counties have organic landscaping policies and programs, including Irvine, San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, Costa Mesa and Laguna Hills. Let’s bug Dana Point!

Local Teen Hooks 212-Pound Swordfish; Bass Fishing Hits Lull

B

efore going into the regularly scheduled weekly fish report, an astounding catch was made on a private boat out of Dana Point Harbor.

Cooper Allen, a 15-year-old from San Clemente, pulled in a surprise catch on a family fishing trip on Sunday, Aug. 18.

The Allen family took a private fishing trip on the Cliffhanger out of Dana Point Harbor looking for some tuna. However, 12 miles off San Onofre, Cooper Allen caught what his mom Devon called “the pinnacle of a fisherman’s career.”

On a rod and reel hooked with a mackerel as live bait, Allen pulled in a 212-pound swordfish. Without the proper gear, Allen managed to fight and haul in the fish after a seven-hour battle.

In the weekly report out of Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching, Captain Brian Woolley said the fishing has “had its differences for us,” with highs and lows.

Bass fishing has hit a lull with cooler and off-color water. There are plenty of catches coming in, but the vast majority are undersized fish, requiring a catch and release. Woolley would like some water movement and current to mix things up

Two Teams Named to CIF-SS Preseason Watch Lists As the fall sports season kicks into gear, the CIF-SS began releasing its 2019 lists of teams to watch.

At Catalina Island, the bass action has been better, along with catches of yellowtail, bonito and barracuda. Yellowtail have been in the 12-20-pound range. Boats on offshore trips have also picked up, with yellowtail, dorado and yellowfin tuna showing up.

While football gets the buzz, girls volleyball was officially the first sport to kick off the fall sports season on Aug. 17, and Dana Hills made the cut on the Division 1 & 2 list.

Two South Coast League teams made the list, including the reigning league champion Dolphins and Trabuco Hills. Rival San Clemente, currently in the Sea View League, also made the list.

Boys water polo is one of the next sports to open, with first games scheduled on Aug. 26, and Dana Hills also made the Division 1 & 2 list.

Longtime rival San Clemente joined the list with the Dolphins, and fellow South Coast League opponent San Juan

Hills made the Division 4 list.

Dana Hills boys water polo opens the season on Aug. 28 at Woodbridge. The Dolphins begin South Coast League play at home against San Clemente on Sept. 17.

Girls Volleyball Opens 2019 Season Dana Hills has started the 2019 girls volleyball season with a pair of run-ins against local neighbor Laguna Beach.

The Dolphins opened the season in the Tesoro Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 17 and Monday, Aug. 19. Dana Hills marched through pool play and the playoffs and swept Bishop Montgomery in the semifinals on the way to play Laguna Beach in the Final.

The Dolphins and Breakers met again just two days later in a nonleague match at Laguna Beach.

The match swung back and forth, with Laguna Beach taking the first and third sets and Dana Hills taking the second and fourth sets. The decisive fifth set was tight, but the Breakers beat the Dolphins again, 25-19, 21-25, 25-17, 17-25, 15-13.

Dana Hills is next in action at the Dave Mohs Tournament on Sept. 6, and the Dolphins play at San Clemente on Sept. 12. DP

ike a lot of things around Dana Point, the inaugural Redo Vintage & Maker’s Market finds its roots in the sand. Building on the success of the annual Vintage Surfboard Collectors Club, the upcoming gathering for both collectors and sellers is expanding the scope and looks to celebrate the best of Southern California’s vintage world.

“The response has been overwhelming; there is a very genuine excitement and enthusiasm about the upcoming market.

People are really looking forward to this unique event,” said Randy Hild, the mastermind of the Redo Vintage & Maker’s Market. “There really isn’t anything like this in the surrounding area, so it’s a great to see this community of artists, creators, makers and collectors come together.”

Amassing a consortium of inspired artists, artisans, collectors and retailers, the Redo Vintage & Maker’s Market will take place on Sunday, August 25, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Closing three blocks of Dana Point’s shopping district on Del Prado to traffic, it will feature a pedestrian-friendly vintage and artisan market where shoppers can stroll and explore the curated vintage collections and authentic assortment of goods on offer. From local talent to some of the most influential names in the vintage space, there’s undoubtedly going to be a lot to take in.

Frequenting the beaches throughout San Diego and Orange County, Doheny regular, artist and musician Brian Bent has signed on. Bent can usually be found styling on his huge, wooden longboard called a “kook box.” A hepcat throwback, he’s putting his own unique spin on today’s California beach culture. From his

hen last we heard from Luke Wyler, a.k.a. Lowers Luke, earlier this summer, he was stacking results, building some serious momentum and looking toward a great few months of surfing and competition.

The 13-year-old San Clemente regularfooter kept the dream alive last weekend at the season opener of the USA Surfing Prime Series. With fun, highly rippable peaks on offer at the Del Mar jetties at Camp Pendleton, Lowers Luke made the final in both the Under 14 and Under 16

artwork, to the clothing he designs, to the tunes he jams, there’s absolutely no missing Bent when he’s around.

And from the hot rod-inspired surf aesthetic, to motorcycle radness, to killer, well-informed artistic sensibilities, Scotty Stopnick is another area original who doesn’t just collect and create vintage pieces, but truly lives and embraces the artisan lifestyle and culture. Like Bent, he’ll be bringing his unique act to the Redo Vintage & Maker’s Market.

Add to the mix everyone’s favorite, flipper-wearing bodysurfer Mark Cunningham, and a good time is a guarantee.

A legendary Hawaiian lifeguard, Cunningham is arguably the best bodysurfer, but he’s also an artist and supremely well-educated collector of vintage surf wear and artifacts. He has appeared in surf films Sprout, A Broke Down Melody and more recently, Come Hell or High Water. He’s making a special trip to California just for the market.

The surf theme will be omnipresent, and thanks to the Vintage Surf Collectors Club, there will be plenty of classic old boards to check out. One of the largest groups of surfboard collectors in the world, the Vintage Surf Collectors Club provides a platform for displaying, appreciating, sharing, trading, and celebrating historically relevant, classic and vintage surfboards, surf equipment and memorabilia. The Southern California Woodie Club will also be on hand with their incredible collection of classic surf rides.

There will also be some legit, big-name vintage retailers there on the block. One of the most renowned is American Vintage House. Based in Newport Beach, JoAnn Sarvak’s American Vintage House offers divisions. Finishing third in both finals, it was a stellar start to the new USA Surfing season.

Earlier in the summer, Wyler was in Hawaii for the Rip Curl Grom Search. Held in perfect conditions at Kewalos Basin, he took out the Under 12 division. Working with former world tour surfer Kekoa Bacalso, it was more than just another contest win. It was a great learning experience, as Wyler continues to expand his horizons.

After that, he was off to Waco, Texas, to train at the BSR Surf Resort. The wave pool in Texas has become one of the premier spots for young surfers looking to develop their air game and hone their skills. With regular trips to the pool, Wyler

unique and nostalgic pieces that bring that special vibe. Her ever-evolving inventory has been selected from vintage markets and travels throughout the United States.

She’ll have some of her more sought-after pieces available this weekend.

Radical Relic is another one to keep an eye out for. An antique and design collective located in the heart of the Zaferia Design District in Long Beach, the 16,000-square-foot, mid-century warehouse is filled with antique dealers, artisans and vintage-inspired goods. The concept is to bring together like-minded, passionate, creative, small business owners who want to share a common space for the betterment of their businesses. They’ll be presenting some of their most popular sellers, which will, hopefully, add a unique aesthetic and opportunities for the vintage-minded.

piece you’ve been looking for, there are also going to be some great eats, as well as entertainment. The Mattson 2 will be providing the sounds. The output of jazz twins Jared and Jonathan Mattson always provides a great soundscape, and their mellow, surfy vibe will certainly fit at the Redo Vintage & Maker’s Market.

Hosted by the City of Dana Point, this first-ever vintage street market continues to build momentum and attract some of Southern California’s most reputable, hawk-eyed talent in the vintage and collector space.

“This thing just keeps getting better and better. We’re so stoked to be able to keep the momentum going and have such a wide array of collectors, makers, artists and musicians,” Hild said.
