The restaurant, which had been a favorite among Dana Point locals for nearly a quarter of a century before closing at the end of 2015, reopened at a new location off Pacific Coast Highway last month.

The reopening of the restaurant has been like a homecoming of sorts, as regulars and longtime customers of the previous location on Del Prado Avenue have continued to flow in, said owners Jib Roungchun and Noi Tanomkret, a husband-and-wife team.

“Anywhere we go, Costco, Smart & Final, everyone goes, ‘Oh, when do you come back? When are you coming back?’”

Tanomkret said. “The customers are still wanting for us to come back. Since the soft opening, the customers, they stop by a lot.”

For Roungchun and Tanomkret, Dana Point has always been their home and were always planning on reopening the restaurant.

“The thing is, I love Dana Point and since we’ve been here, like 24 years, we’ve become locals already, and we just love the place already,” Roungchun. “And our house is right here in Dana Point.”

“Dana Point is our life, our home,” Tanomkret later added.

The previous Thai This on Del Prado and Amber Lantern Street shut its doors on New Year’s Eve 2015, because the building was torn down for planned development in the area.

“Because they took it down, we had to leave,” Roungchun said.

For the past few years, the restaurateurs have been spending much of their focus on Thai This’ sister establishment, Thai Juan On, in San Juan Capistrano. The couple opened that restaurant in 2008, and it has since become a popular lunch spot for San Juan.

When Thai Juan On opened, Tanomkret said, it shared its menu with Thai This.

And with Thai This open for business again, Roungchun said they’re looking to incorporate healthier options by offering some gluten-free and vegan dishes.

WHAT’S NEXT: Currently, Thai This is open only for dinner, but the couple does plan on extending the new restaurant’s hours to include lunch in the future.

Planning Commission Approves Permits for Hotel THE LATEST: The Dana Point Planning Commission met in the Dana Point Community Center on Monday, Aug. 26 to consider a coastal development permit for a 51-room hotel at 34482 Green Lantern, overlooking the harbor.

The applicants, Yenny Ng, AIG, and YNG Architects, requested approvals to construct a hotel bordering the Chart House restaurant and Cove Road.

The site is located within the Coastal Development District of the Dana Point Specific Plan (DPSP)/Local Coastal Program (LCP), which is the applicable Local Coastal Program for properties directly above the Orange County Dana Point Harbor. The site lies within the California Coastal Commission appeals area of the Coastal Development District of the DPSP/ LCP. In accordance with Implementing Actions Program of the DPSP/LCP, the Orange County Zoning Code (OCZC) is auxiliary to the DPSP, and for any item or issue not included in the DPSP land use regulations, the OCZC shall apply.

According to the agenda item’s background, based on the project’s design and OCZC standards, a Coastal Development Permit is required for the development of a coastal bluff lot and lot merger, and a Conditional Use Permit is necessary for architectural features that exceed the height limit by less than 10 feet.

During discussion, Commissioner Scott McKhann took issue with the canopy height on the rooftop of the hotel.

Commissioner Eric Nelson motioned to approve the CDP, with the condition that the architectural features on the roof exceeding the height limit were denied.

THE LATEST: Orange County Sheriff’s Department received reports at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27 of a man who had fallen off a cliff near Cove Road and Dana Point Harbor Drive in Dana Point Harbor.

Both OCSD and Orange County Fire Authority responded to the incident. The man had a pulse when responders arrived at the scene, but he was deceased before he was airlifted from the area, according to authorities.

The OCSD Coroner’s Office identified the decedent as 53-year-old Derek Wilson.

Mason Ming says he and his family were visiting Baby Beach from Redlands when he and his wife witnessed Wilson’s fall.

“My wife suddenly said, ‘He’s falling!’, and I turned around and saw the last part of his fall,” Ming said.

Ming called authorities at 9:27 a.m.

Robbery Suspects Break in Restaurants THE LATEST: Early Friday morning on Friday, Aug. 23, two storefronts were broken into on Camino de Estrella, a road that divides the cities of San Clemente and Dana Point.

The front glass doors of both The Fuel Shack in San Clemente and Kawamata Seafood in Dana Point were shattered, according to the owners of both restaurants.

While nothing was reportedly taken from The Fuel Shack, several rolls of quarters were stolen from Kawamata Seafood, a popular lunch spot that offers Hawaiianstyle poke bowls.

Cameras inside The Fuel Shack, a family-operated breakfast and brunch spot, provided police with rough descriptions of two suspects, though their faces were covered.

One individual was wearing a hoodie with a bandana over the person’s face, and the other had on a knitted ski mask. The suspects appeared to be male.

The Fuel Shack’s manager, who wished to remain anonymous, said she received an alert on her cell phone around 4:30 a.m. on Friday, notifying her that the alarm had gone off at her restaurant and that she had 30 seconds to respond.

The two suspects who were caught on camera inside the restaurant didn’t take anything or cause any further damage, according to the manager. She was thankful

no one was hurt.

Meanwhile, that same morning about two blocks down the street, Kawamata Seafood experienced a similar break-in.

Kawamata Seafood’s owner said they had a break-in in 2016, noting that they seem to be more frequent in the neighborhood. The restaurant is looking into increasing its security measures.—Cari Hachmann

City Council Reconvenes for Open Session THE LATEST: After more than a month without Dana Point City Council opensession meetings, the city’s locally elected officials will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The sole item listed on the agenda, added

by Councilmember Debra Lewis, calls for discussion on the advocacy of city positions.

“I am writing to express my concern with the violation of City of Dana Point City Council Policy 214 (“Policy”), a policy that has been in effect since 7/13/1993,” Lewis writes. “The Policy is intended to leave no doubt in the mind of anyone receiving a City Council Member’s communication as to whether or not that Council Member is speaking in his/her official capacity or merely as an individual.”

The document goes on to state that councilmembers were not aware of the letter, dated Aug. 2, that was sent to Supervisor Lisa Bartlett regarding homelessness in Orange County.

“At least some councilmembers were entirely unaware of the (letter’s) existence, much less its contents, until August 14, 2019,” Lewis said.

The letter in question was signed by seven South County mayors in hopes of setting up a meeting with Bartlett while proposing the elimination of Service Planning Areas (SPAs)—the county’s regionbased method to offer services for health care and homelessness.

The SPAs currently divide the county into three regions: north, central and south.

In the letter, which was sent to Bartlett’s office on Wednesday, Aug. 14, the cities of Aliso Viejo, Dana Point, Laguna Hills, Lake Forest, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano lament the use of SPAs, stating that homelessness is a “Countywide issue and the County needs to address it as such.”

Bartlett responded to the letter on Aug. 15, contending that the SPAs don’t prevent homeless individuals in South County from accessing services in the north and central regions.

Workshop Held for Military Members Transitioning to Workforce Google presenters and USO Camp Pendleton hosted a “Grow with Google” workshop for service members, veterans and military spouses transitioning to civilian life.

Veteran James Durago, a Google employee, led the workshop, which focused on free Google tools and resources to enhance the job search experience for the military and veteran community. Presenters instructed attendees how to use a military occupation code (MOS, AFSC, NEC or rating) to find civilian jobs and ways to pinpoint remote work options for military spouses.

Durago co-leads the Google Veteran’s Network, which aims to solve challenges in the veterans community with Google products and recruit top veteran talent.

Congressman Mike Levin (D-CA) also attended the event.

“As chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity, I’m excited to see Grow with Google and the USO working together to help prepare our service members and military spouses for life after the military,” said Levin. “Ensuring that those who have served our country can find a good-paying job is a top priority of mine, and it is why sessions like these are so important.”

According to a “Grow with Google” press release, the program is the tech company’s commitment to help create economic opportunity in communities across the United States by providing free tools and trainings designed to help people find the jobs they want, advance their careers and grow their businesses.

“As a veteran myself, I know that the transition out of uniform and into civilian life can be challenging—often, it is hard to know where to even start in the job search,” Durago said. “America’s veterans offer unique skills to employers, and that’s why I look forward to showing how service members and veterans can use Google’s tools to empower and advance their professional aspirations.”

In August of last year, Google.org gave a $2.5 million grant to the USO to incorporate Google IT Support Professional Certificate into its USO Pathfinder® programming and to provide training and career guidance for transitioning service members, military spouses and veterans.

Senator Bates Calls for Federal and State Assistance to Prevent Coastal Bluff Tragedies Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) announced her support for U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris, and U.S. Representative Mike Levin, to request the White House budget office approve funding that would help stabilize local bluffs. Three people were fatally crushed when a bluff collapsed at an Encinitas beach on Friday, Aug. 2.

Authorities reportedly warn beachgoers of naturally eroding cliffs throughout Southern California.

In a separate letter, Sen. Bates also asks the California Coastal Commission to take steps that will help stabilize California’s bluffs and potentially save lives.

“While there is no silver bullet in strengthening our coast against further erosion, I believe we should consider every option that can help,” Bates said.

“Having more federal funds will be welcome, but so will giving communities flexibility to respond to local threats. That is why I decided to make my pitch for specific actions to the White House and to the California Coastal Commission.

Every level of government should work together to protect our coast.”

In her letter to the Acting Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, Sen. Bates asked the director to “approve a request from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to fund the Encinitas-Solana Beach Coastal Storm Damage Reduction Project, also known

as the San Diego County Shore Protection Project.”

In her letter to the California Coastal Commission, Sen. Bates asked the commission to reconsider bluff stabilization efforts that do not involve “managed retreat.”

Bates represents the 36th Senate District in the California Legislature, which covers South Orange County, North San Diego County, and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

Dana Point Harbor Partners to Host Two Open House Events Dana Point Harbor Partners will host two open house events at the Dana Point Harbor management office on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 3-4, from 3-6 p.m.

Inspirational boards will be on display, featuring design and programming matters such as materials and color palettes, outdoor spaces, landscaping, events and public activation areas, tenant mix and more.

“DPHP welcomes the community of Dana Point to participate in these events and to be part of the long-awaited revitalization of the Dana Point Harbor retail commercial core area,” a news release states on the Dana Point Harbor website.

Feedback gathered from the workshop and open house events will be summarized and presented to the City of Dana Point Planning Commission on September 23.

The open house events come within weeks of a community public input event on the concept designs that was held at Ocean Institute on Aug. 19. At least 150 people gathered in the Samueli Lecture Hall & Conference Center to see the latest conceptualizations for a new and improved harbor.

New Lieutenant Assumes Leadership Lt. Kirsten Monteleone Officially Begins Overseeing Dana Point’s Police Services

L

ieutenant Kirsten Monteleone learned early on she wouldn’t be able to help everyone while working in law enforcement—but that wouldn’t stop her from trying.

Monteleone officially began her role as Chief of Police for Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Dana Point Police Services on Friday, Aug. 30. And while her career plan wasn’t always to be a police officer, an internship program with the Westminster Police Department exposed Monteleone to the field of law enforcement as a high school student.

“In college, I initially went to school for international business. It didn’t take long for me to realize it wasn’t for me,” Monteleone said. “And I changed my major to criminal justice.”

Monteleone attended Cal State Fullerton before working as an Orange County deputy probation counselor and then a court services officer.

“The internship really laid the foundation in my approach to my job,” Monteleone said. “I got to do ride-alongs, help with crime prevention and neighborhood watch. I got to see the good things that police officers do, and ultimately I wanted to be part of that.”

juveniles.

“It was also the most emotionally draining,” Monteleone said. “These kids, under 18, are there for gun violence, drugs, gangs. In many cases, their family life is not stable. One parent is working multiple jobs, while the other parent is incarcerated.”

Monteleone says she helped connect juveniles, who wanted to improve their situation, to services such as tattoo removals or jobs through a Regional Occupation Program (ROP). Other times, clients get caught in and out of incarceration despite early intervention.

“Some of these kids would grow up and go on to serve time for murder or other serious crimes,” Monteleone said.

“I would run into them while on the job, and they would get excited to run into someone they knew; it was like they were like 16-year-old kids again.”

Monteleone says no matter the infrac-

tions, she still made the effort to connect to each client.

“Ultimately, these kids just wanted someone in their life to tell them the difference between right and wrong,” Monteleone said. “My approach and always has been that I’ll do anything I can to help you; you just can’t lie to me. Having honest dialogue sets the foundation in moving toward a solution.”

Monteleone’s predecessor, Lt. Margie Sheehan, has been selected by Sheriff Don Barnes to serve as his executive aide.

Barnes served in the position prior to his election as sheriff.

“I am eternally grateful to the city manager, council and my department for the opportunity to serve the city of Dana Point,” Sheehan said. “But it is the combined commitment of the citizens of the city and the deputies that serve them that stay with me.”

Dana Point Times asked Sheehan if she

could leave Monteleone with any words of advice ahead of her transition to chief of police.

“Dana Point is very special and unlike other cities. The residents are very engaged in the community, and they feel we are part of the community as well.

‘Police Services’ are the key words. We are here to serve the community. My hope is that people understand we are part of the solution,” Sheehan said. “It’s said that the greatness of a community is measured by the compassion and commitment of the citizens within. The same can be said of law enforcement officers. The combination of the two is what makes Dana Point my favorite place on earth.”

I have worked in Republican politics for the last quarter-century on campaigns, as a staff person and the last decade as an elected official. One thing I learned over the years is when you kick the beehive, the bees come out. This is exactly what is happening to me since I introduced Assembly Bill 1273, a measure to rein in the Orange County Transportation Corridor Agencies (the Toll Road agency).

The original concept from 1987 for the toll roads has changed dramatically since its inception. The current plan has extended debt and increased tolls at least 12 times since 1996—debt that will cost $11 billion by 2053. The toll roads have greater debt than six individual states!

Either from incompetence or governmental mission-creep, the toll roads have become a train wreck in need of massive reform. The toll roads have been collecting tolls since 1993 and will continue to do so until at least 2053. Originally, the system was created due to a lack of transportation funding. Now, my constituents pay four times for roads, and this does not include tolls for driving on the toll roads.

In addition to tolls, the toll roads charge a developer fee ranging from $4,126 to $5,797 for new single-family homes built.

We have been paying these fees for years, via increased home prices and higher costs of goods, to an agency that was intended to ultimately turn over the roads to the public. When will it be enough?

GRAVY TRAIN FOR POLITICIANS AND THEIR FRIENDS The toll roads have become a local gravy train for elected officials charged with overseeing it and numerous consultants who call these politicians their friends. Last year, Mission Viejo Councilman Ed Sachs was paid $7,753.20 as a toll road board member.

Recently, Los Angeles Times exposed Supervisor Lisa Bartlett’s campaign consultant’s firm, Venture Strategic, and their lucrative $5.8 million toll road public relations contract. Bartlett was closely involved in the decision process of awarding a multimillion-dollar contract to her campaign consultant. Bartlett’s fellow board members stripped her of her authority as chair to approve contracts for $25,000 and less. One of these contracts escalated to $517,000. See a pattern?

POLITICS AS USUAL My scrutiny of the toll roads has threatened the livelihoods of politicians and their acolytes. I won’t stop until we right the

out-of-control nature of the toll roads.

On the heels of launching her state senate campaign last month, Lisa Bartlett dredged up an eight-year-old false allegation against me (an allegation that the Dana Point city attorney rejected after an investigation at the time).

Regarding her 2011 allegation against me, Lisa Bartlett did not tell the truth.

Bartlett repeatedly told the media she filed a complaint with the city. In fact, no complaint by Bartlett was ever filed with Dana Point, and her story has been ever-evolving.

During the 2018 primary, Bartlett’s former campaign manager, Jeff Corless (he also consulted for Ed Sachs in his 2018 campaign against me), tried to push the same story with a local blogger, Aaron Park. My thencampaign manager discovered this, and the blogger decided to not write about the story then, but is now launching daily, personal attacks against me—all that are false.

The timing of this politically motivated, coordinated attack began and continues after my introduction of legislation that would clean up the toll roads. Jennifer Beall, my disgruntled former campaign manager and assembly staff person, resigned from my office over the toll road legislation because her husband is a board member of the toll road agency. Sadly, Beall is leading the recent attacks on me.

Beall threatened that if I proposed my toll road legislation, “bad things would happen to me” and “I will have primary opponents”— both of which have come to fruition.

There seem to be fewer and fewer limited government elected officials these days to fight for the taxpayer. Rather, many in the establishment class seek to enrich themselves at the expense of their constituents. I will never be one to go along to get along. I was elected to fight for good government and for the taxpayers of my district—no matter the consequences.

I will continue to lead this and fight for my constituents over the interests of the establishment class, no matter the lengths that they go and the lies that they tell in an attempt to deter and discredit me.

Actually, I’ve seen single-use plastics at the events at Ocean Institute before, including their annual watershed conference and the Chamber of Commerce's candidate forum.

Ocean Institute, as an event organizer and a venue, must set guidelines on what cannot be used and what should be encouraged.

Many cities, outside Orange County, have banned single-use plastic food ware.

In July, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 619 to allow us to bring our own cups and containers to restaurants and events. But we know the plastic crisis requires more changes.

Rethink what is necessary by the consequences. Money is saved from buying bottled water. Water is saved from the half bottles of water left behind. No plasticlined paper cups, no sugar packets, no little cups of creamer, no stirrers, etc.— no trash—labor is saved from cleanup.

Similarly, a lot can be saved when food is properly planned.

According to University of California’s Climate Lab, "Packaging makes up the largest category of municipal waste. On top of that, single-use items make up another 10% of our discards. This kind of mindless consumption has a really big impact on climate change. Roughly 29% of our nation’s greenhouse gas emissions comes from the way we make, consume and dispose stuff. That’s more than the emissions that come from heating our homes or driving around in our cars. It takes a lot of energy and resources to produce single-use items—these things we use only for a few minutes or even a few seconds before they become trash. When single-use items go into a landfill, all that paper and plastic are destroyed. So we have to go out to extract new raw materials to replace it."

Leaders like Ocean Institute must show Dana Point that we can live without singleuse food ware.

The next big event at the Ocean Institute is the Tall Ship & Ocean Festival. One of the activities is Breakfast with a Mermaid. I look forward to seeing a mermaid freed from plastics.

At the Movies: ‘Where’d You Go, Bernadette?’ Is a Lost Cause

ichard Linklater’s new dramedy, Where’d You Go, Bernadette?, is about a Pacific Northwest suburban housewife played by Cate Blanchett, who has a nervous breakdown and then intentionally disappears to rediscover who she is as a person. If this sounds familiar to you, it might be because it’s based on the best-selling 2012 novel of the same name

by Maria Semple. Or it could be because this movie was actually filmed more than two years ago, with Annapurna Pictures Dana Point Times August 30-September 5, 2019

and United Artists continually pushing back the release date until ultimately dumping it into the dead zone that is late August.

Now that audiences are finally getting a chance to see the mysteriously postponed feature, with the studios obviously not sure what to do with it, I can say that it’s not one of the worst films I’ve seen this year. But it is one of the more frustrating.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette? has a lot going on that might have been, interestingly enough, too much for Linklater. With characters that have extreme neuroses

like Blanchett’s character has, there can be a fine line with them coming across as either relatable or very insufferable.

You really need a storyteller who knows how this type of personality and mental history operates, and I didn’t get that impression with anyone involved with the film or its script. Even worse, Bernadette isn’t even the most unlikable part of the movie. That would be Emma Nelson’s Bee, who is, unfortunately, the most recent manifestation of the “obnoxious, precocious, know-it-all kid.” For me, Where’d You

Vying for Vintage Redo Vintage & Maker’s Market Celebrates First Event

housands gathered in Dana Point’s Lantern District on Sunday, Aug. 25 for the inaugural Redo Vintage & Maker’s Market.

The event hosted a variety of 70 vendors selling thrifted, vintage and handmade goods, as well as a lineup of live music, food trucks and a beer garden. Classic cars were on display, including Woodies USA and Hotrods Unlimited. Live music featured Bent Duo, The Matson 2 and Dano.

“This went beyond our wildest dreams and expectations,” event organizer Randy Hild said.

“I handpicked every vendor. I want to know that they would be good people to work with on top of them having great products. They were phenomenal, and I think that was really a factor.”

Hild also gives credit to city staff in supporting the event.

“I have to give tremendous props to the city,” Hild said. “I couldn’t have done it without their support, like having armed police officers there to offer security. And Public Works providing cones, cleaning up before and after, supplying trash cans. Everything was done with class.”

Hild says the event drew at least 8,000 people, far exceeding his expectations.

“When you know the community loved the event, loved being there, all the hard work pays off,” Hild said.

Hild says for future Redo Market events, he plans to improve accessibility to food while maintaining the event’s support for local restaurants. He also hopes to provide water stations for dogs.

Football Wins Opener, Hosts Northwood Friday Dana Hills won its first season opener since 2010 with a balanced offensive attack and a suffocating defensive effort to defeat Los Amigos, 27-7, in a nonleague game on Friday, Aug. 23 at Garden Grove High School.

“I know these kids believe,” Dana Hills coach Phil Skinner said. “You look in every one of their eyes, and they understand what we’re all about. We’re not going to worry about convincing everybody else.

We were done convincing last week in the scrimmage. These kids didn’t need any more convincing. They understood.”

The win also gave the Dolphins (1-0) a winning record at any point in a season for the second time since 2013. The Dolphins are determined to keep that status.

s August comes to a close, bass and yellowtail are the top catches at Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said the last week of action had many different angles of success. For the half-day and three-quarter-day trips, the bass action did pick back up. The threequarter-day trips were also taking in more bottom fish, as the offshore fishing waits to perk up, but there were still quality catches to be had.

The shorter trips did see a small number of yellowtail and dorado peek in.

Offshore fishing has been pulling in the yellowfin tuna. Woolley said that the yellowfin have been getting closer to shore every day. Anglers were pulling in the yellowfin with fly-lined sardine bait and colt sniper jigs.

With local surfers enjoying so much competitive success, a new book reminds us that there’s more to surfing than winning

“I

have never thought of surfing as a sport—not a traditional sport, anyway. It’s not something you do casually, like playing a round of golf with your mates on weekends. It’s much more of a drug, a lifestyle, a religion.”

So writes Australian surfing icon Nat Young in his new book, Church of the Open Sky. It’s definitely worth noting that Young didn’t always feel this way. His nickname was “The Animal” for a reason.

Throughout the 1960s, Young made a name for himself as a competitive surfer.

In 1966, he famously won the World Surfing Championships in San Diego riding a board affectionately dubbed “Magic Sam.” Young not only won the contest, but his performance is seen as a seminal moment that helped kick-start the Shortboard Revolution. Young would go on to win the 1970 Smirnoff World Pro/Am, as well as three Australian titles in ’66, ’67 and ’69.

He also won the Bells Beach Surf Classic a record four times.

But that competitive mindset began to shift after meeting pioneer Tom Blake at San Onofre one autumn day in 1982.

sky,” Blake famously said—a phrase that inspired Young’s book title.

“We eventually got together at San Onofre and had a good half of a day just talking about the whole state of surfing, how it had got there, and why it was and how it was,” Young said when we recently chatted.

I bring this up because, at the moment, the South Orange County zone is home to the No. 1-rated surfer in the world: Kolohe Andino. It also is a part-time residence to 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater.

Both surfers are currently competing in the Tahiti Pro, and with a significant southwest swell lining up this week, the

contest could see a spectacular finish. It also will have world-title implications.

Andino and Slater could also qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo—the pinnacle of competitive sport. The decision is based on the year-end results on the WSL’s Championship Tour, with the top two surfers from each country qualifying for the Olympics.

Back in Virginia Beach last weekend, a whole slew of local surfers competed in the Vans Pro Virginia Beach. Crosby Colapinto won the pro junior, while Pat Gudauskas and Cole Houshmand made the semifinals of the main event.

It’s a drum I like to beat in this column, but the San Clemente and Dana Point area undoubtedly is the premier hotbed for American surfing talent. From world champions to rising stars, the talent pool is deeper here than anywhere else in the world.

But the beauty of this area is that there’s something for every surfer here. You don’t have to harbor world-title aspirations to enjoy the ocean. Whether you’re surfing San Onofre, Trestles, Doheny or Salt Creek, you can find whatever you’re looking for here.

“To me, if it hadn’t been for people at the Outrigger Canoe Club and places like that, it never would have been a competition. They turned surfing into a competition. They were looking to put a label on it like all the other sports,” Young said emphatically. “That’s why the first chapter of my book is called ‘Surfing Is Not a Sport.’

It’s been a misnomer for a long time.

“In the early days in Australia when people got together, they’d call it a ‘rally.’

And in Hawaii, Buffalo [Keaulana] still calls it a ‘meet.’ It wasn’t a freaking competition. You brought your woman, your dogs, your surfboards, and you all came down to the beach and hung out. So, when does surfing become a sport?”

This summer, the line at San Onofre has been out of hand. The parking lots at Trestles and Doheny have been packed.

Some of these people aren’t surfing to win a contest or become a pro. They’re coming to the beach to ride waves with friends and enjoy the culture and lifestyle that surfing has perpetuated for more than 100 years now.

That’s not to say there isn’t a place for competitive surfing; there most certainly is. Surfers such as Andino and Slater are incredible role models and are inspiring future generations. But with all the talk of points and winning percentages, let us not forget why we all started surfing in the first place—because it’s fun. DP

t’s hard to believe, but it’s already that time of year again. The groms are back in school—which seems crazy—and the 2019/2020 National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) season is officially underway.

The first contest of the year took place last weekend in Ventura, and it was San Clemente shred master Rex Hennings blowing doors on the Menehune division to take the win. Obviously, a summer’s worth of surf at Lowers has paid off.

The 12-year-old regular-footer has been on fire lately. He made his first heat at the recent USA Surfing Prime contest at Del Mar Jetty on the base at Camp Pendleton.

Prior to that, Rex enjoyed a nice little summer vacation surf trip to Mainland Mexico, where he scored some muchappreciated laps in at the iconic point breaks.

And to get the ball rolling, at the end of July, Rex took the win at the Gudauskas brothers’ Stoke-O-Rama contest that ran in conjunction with the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach.

From what we can tell, it’s been a pretty epic summer for Rex. Now it’s time to hit the books—and the surf. DP
