Five things Dana Point should know this week Dana Hills Darrell Stillwagon Award THE LATEST: On Aug. 8, for the first time ever, the Dana Hills High School (DHHS) Associated Student Body (ASB) won the Darrell Stillwagon Spirit Award at the Orange County Leadership Camp at the University of California-Santa Barbara. This camp is open to all Orange County public high schools and was initiated more than 45 years ago as a gathering of young student leaders. It is the largest ASB leadership camp of its kind in the United States.

The Stillwagon Award is chosen by the camps directors and counselors, all recent alumni of previous camps.

Ken Neddler is a co-activities director and administrator at Dana Hills High School as well as a previous president of the Orange County Leadership Association.

“Last year, we were a bit disappointed with not even receiving an honorable mention,” Neddler explained. “This year, we were prepared for another shocker when they didn’t announce us as an honorable mention and when they announced us as the winners our club erupted. I’m so proud of them.”

“This award has been a goal that Dana Hills ASB’s has been trying to reach for 45 years and to finally accomplish it is unbelievable,” DHHS ASB president Gianna Marietti said. “This award took a strong and spirited group effort to win and I am so excited and honored to continue these levels of leadership and spirit into the school year as well. The moment we were announced as winners was a moment I will never forget and cherish forever.”

WHAT’S NEXT: Neddler explained that one of the most difficult parts of winning such an award is maintaining attachment to its ideals.

Settlement Reached in Dana Point Automotive Lawsuit THE LATEST: A settlement has been reached between the City of Dana Point and Thomas Volkmann, owner of Dana Dana Point Times August 24-30, 2018

WHAT’S NEXT: An estimate of the daily fines amount due reached a sum of $650,000. The settlement states Volkmann will pay $50,000 within 30 days of the filing of the agreement, followed by an additional $200,000 due no later than Dec. 31, 2019. Also in the statement, Volkmann is ordered to close down by Jan. 31, 2019.

In between those dates, Volkmann is expected to follow a series of operating rules including operating within current city zoning permit needs, performing all mechanic work inside the shop building from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and removing all inoperable vehicles not under immediate or active repair from the grounds. OCDA to Prosecute Alleged Golden State Killer THE LATEST: On Aug. 22, Orange County District Attorney (OCDA) Tony Rackauckas announced that the case against Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, of Citrus Heights, will be prosecuted jointly in Sacramento County. This joint prosecution will involve Contra Costa, Orange, Sacramento, Santa Barbara, Tulare and Ventura Counties. In an amended complaint charging all crimes together in one case as well as 13 counts of kidnapping to commit robbery.

In Orange County alone, DeAngelo is being charged with four felony murders with special circumstances sentencing enhancements for multiple murders and murder during the commission of rape,

Public Watchdogs Aims for Lawsuit at SONGS THE LATEST: Following a contractor’s statements at a Community Engagement Panel (CEP) meeting on Aug. 9, the nonprofit organization Public Watchdogs garnered $50,000 in donations to start what it says will be filing an injunction lawsuit against Southern California Edison, the majority owner of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), from storing more of its spent nuclear fuel on-site.

Charles Langley, the executive director of Public Watchdogs, said he couldn’t give too many details related to the pending lawsuit at this time, but he did confirm that the organization is trying to get some kind of injunction, likely through San Diego or Orange Superior Courts.

Ray Lutz, the director and engineer with Citizens Oversight Projects, Inc., sent out a press release later in the week, stating his organization will seek an injunction through the California Coastal Commission (CCC), and the organization has already penned a letter to the commission.

“Edison says there was no risk because computer model testing shows that canisters can be dropped 25 feet without failing,” Lutz said in a prepared statement.

“However, those models were considering damage to canisters contained in much stronger transportation or transfer casks, and not the relatively thin, 5/8-inch thick stainless-steel interior canister alone. Computer models of the canister alone (inside the HI-STORM overpack) consider drops of only 12 inches.”

Lutz, whose organization was part of a lawsuit that amended the permit agreement for SONGS officials to store the spent nuclear fuel on-site, said that the California Coastal Commission should take action before any more of the spent nuclear fuel canisters are loaded.

In his letter, Lutz said there should be a full stop of the process of storing the spent nuclear fuel until a full review of the safety procedures can be completed.

As of Wednesday, Aug. 22, there were 29 canisters stored of the 73 SCE is loading into cavity enclosure containers (CEC), just about 100 feet from the ocean.

David Fritch, the contractor tasked with OSHA oversight, said at a recent CEP meeting that many of the safety procedures at SONGS are not being observed by everyone who is working on the site, that or they don’t have the proper training.

WHAT’S NEXT: Edison said it would take measures to ensure safety training will be administered to the appropriate employees and contractors. Since the information was released by Fritch, loading of canisters from wet storage to dry storage canisters had stopped, with work possibly resuming in the next couple weeks. —Eric Heinz

Dana Woods Resident Margaret Lang Turns 100 Years Old THE LATEST: This week, Dana Point resident Margaret Lang will turn 100-yearsold. An original Dana Woods neighborhood resident, Lang recalled the days when want-to-be homeowners literally waited in lines outside to secure one of the new homes.

“In 1986, Dana Woods, the second phase was being built,” Lang recalled. She spoke of the scarcity of homes at the time and the fun of standing inline day and night to participate in a lottery as each street became available.

“Even though some families have moved away, the return to visit their friends” Lang said. “It is truly what community is all about. That’s what Dana Point means to me. The most warm, supportive family neighborhood.”

Boys & Girls Club of Capistrano Valley Helps Raise More than $225,000 in 24 Hours On Aug. 15, the Boys & Girls Club of Capistrano Valley and fourteen fellow clubs partnered with the Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF) to host Greatness Amplified, a Giving Day for all Boys & Girls Clubs in Orange County. The 24-hour online effort raised $225,000 with the participation of more than 389 donors and local organizations providing support and resources to children in need. This was the first time all 15 Orange County Clubs have come together in a single fundraising initiative. The participating clubs included Boys and Girls Clubs in Anaheim, Brea-Placentia-Yorba Linda, Buena Park, Capistrano Valley, Central Orange Coast, Cypress, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Huntington Valley, Laguna Beach, La Habra, South Coast Area, Stanton, Tustin and Westminster.

Moulton Niguel Water District Celebrates 50 Years of Recycling Water On Aug. 21, Moulton Niguel Water District celebrated its 50th year of operating their water recycling program. The program reuses more than 2 billion gallons of water every year.

As one of the first agencies to use recycled water in Orange County in the early 1960s, Moulton Niguel Water District now provides recycled water to more than 1,300 customers. Collectively, the district uses 7 million gallons of recycled water every day to irrigate landscapes at parks, recreational facilities, golf courses, street medians, and more.

“Our district could fill 3,900 Olympicsized swimming pools with recycled water,” explains Moulton Niguel Water district president Donald Froelich. “Our recycled water program has been instrumental in creating a sustainable water supply for our customers.”

Recycled water meets about 25 percent of the district’s overall water demands.

Without recycled water sources, customers would need to use drinking water for all outdoor water uses, which comes at a higher cost.

Zephyr Announces Public Release of 10 New Homes in South Cove On Aug. 21, Zephyr, developers of South Cove announced the public release of Phase 4 that will bring ten new luxury condo residences to market.

Phase 4 offers two floor plans: “Aliso” flats and “Trestles” townhomes. 1-bedroom “Trestles” townhomes are also available in the current release. With prices starting at $622,990 for the Trestles 883, Zephyr says these are some of their most popular models. The one, two and three-bedroom floor plans available in Phase 4 range from 883 to 1,794 square feet, with prices ranging from $622,990 to $1,099,990. These homes will be ready for move-in spring 2019.

Senate Passes the SingleUse Plastic Straws Bill In a final vote of 25 to 15, the California Senate passed the single-use plastic straws bill, also known as AB 1884. The bill prevents dine-in and full-service restaurants from giving customers plastic straws unless requested.

“A ‘single-use plastic straw’ means a

single-use, disposable tube made predominately of plastic derived from either petroleum or a biologically based polymer such as corn or other plant sources,” Bill 1884 states.

A full-service restaurant is defined as an establishment with the primary purpose of serving food and where food may be consumed on the premises. All of the following characteristics must be met in order to be considered full-service: a consumer must be escorted to an assigned eating area. The consumers food and/or beverage order is taken after the consumer has been seated, the food and/or beverage are delivered to the consumer, any requested items associated with the consumers food and/or beverage order are brought to the consumer and that a check must be delivered directly to the consumer.

According to environmental groups, people throw away as many as 175 million plastic straws in the United States, many of which end up in the ocean and can harm marine life.

“Nothing we use for a few minutes should be allowed to pollute our rivers and oceans for hundreds of years—especially when we don’t really need it,” said Dan Jacobson, state director of Environment California.

According to the text of the bill, businesses will be warned twice before being fined $25 per day and up to $300 if they are in violation.

The bill now heads back to the Assembly for a concurrence vote before heading to Governor Jerry Brown’s office.

WE MUST ACCEPT CLIMATE CHANGE AS SCIENTIFIC FACT TONY HAYS, San Clemente

The letter in the Aug. 16-22 edition of the San Clemente Times, titled “ManMade Climate Change is a Farce,” made several valid points. Yes, the climate has been changing throughout the history of the earth and will continue to change.

Other aspects of our environment also change. Ocean tides rise and fall every six hours or so. Geological change occurs over millennia. These are all true. But much of our body of scientific knowledge is not directly observable by the general public. We rely on the research of specialists in scientific fields to add to this body of knowledge, and these specialists build a consensus as to what is fact. We accept the consensus of physicists that matter is built up of atoms. Few people will argue with that, even though it’s not apparent.

Similarly we must accept the consensus of specialists that human activity makes a significant impact on climate change, and that we can do something to reduce the rate of change. The repository of considerable knowledge concerning the climate is NASA, and quoting from a NASA website, “Multiple studies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals show that 97 percent or more of actively publishing climate scientists agree: Climate-warming trends over the past century are extremely likely due to human activities.” We may not want to accept that as fact, but we must.

It’s OK to Fall Apart

merican Music Association’s 2017 Emerging Artist of the Year, singer, songwriter and violinist Amanda Shires, will roll into the Coach House on Monday Aug. 26—this time on her own tour bus.

“The vibe is cool at The Coach House, the whole atmosphere,” Shires said. “I’m looking forward to going in there again because this time I don’t have to drive myself. Van days are over. It means that I’ll get more sleep! You wake up and you’re in the town and you get to go explore.”

With a promise to send her some local sightseeing and dining recommendations, Dana Point Times dove right into discussing her new album To The Sunset, which was produced by multiple Grammy Awardwinner Dave Cobb. Shires wrote the album holed up in her closet from 10 a.m.

to midnight every day for months, while her husband watched/distracted their now almost 3-year-old daughter, Mercy Rose.

“In the end, we all have to do to our work. It was time to write and anything else is an excuse. I really did enjoy being in that closet writing all those songs. But I do think that if I was going to do it again, maybe I’ll get my closet remodeled so it’s bigger,” Shires said.

“It was an interesting way to learn more about myself, just having things taped up and seeing the work as I went about learning to accept my own process because I know it’s not how everybody else works.

That’s not how my husband does his songwriting.”

Shires recently earned her masters of fine arts in creative writing from Sewanee, but her writing has always dealt bravely with very real issues, including mental illness and addiction.

“I do the best I can with it. I can only

write what’s true to me or what I’ve seen in my own experience, but I feel like people get it, you know?” Shires said.

In the song “Take On the Dark”, the listener hears “It’s OK to fall apart” and “I know I said it’s (going to) be okay, but what I meant to say is you’ll make it through.”

“I feel like sometimes when you’re trying to deal with anything political or dark or (difficult situations) in your life, you feel like you have to be strong all the time,” Shires said, “when actually, maybe, the real answer is to let yourself feel your feelings and then gather your strength.”

The final song on To The Sunset is the haunting, if not shocking “Wasn’t I Paying Attention,” and the listener is left asking themselves the same thing.

“That song came about as my Dad was telling me about what happened with his friend that he knew very well. He knew he had troubles and mental illness and what not. It just struck me listening to him say things like, ‘I didn’t see it coming.’ and ‘Could I have been a better friend?’ I think those are the questions we’re all left with when somebody goes that far. And we’re left wondering, did I not ask deep enough questions, was I not proving myself to be a trustworthy listener or somebody that could handle things that are dark. I think the more we can talk about those things, the more likely people are to actually connect on that level.”

“I don’t mind telling people what songs are about or what the catalyst for the song was, but I don’t want to give all of it away because it’s a shared experience, sort of a symbiotic relationship,” Shires shared.

“I really like the part about music where, when you put on a record you remember where you were, who you were with and all that kind of stuff.”

Tickets to go see her at The Coach House are $22.50. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the concert starts at 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 27.

At the Movies: ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ is Crazy Fresh Fun

A

fter the mega success of Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel Crazy Rich Asians in 2013, there was natural curiosity on when the movie adaptation would happen. And now, five years later, we finally receive Warner Bros.’ take with the first all-Asian cast in a major Hollywood movie since The Joy Luck Club (1993). Even more interesting is that the lead, Constance Wu, is one of the few Asian-Americans alongside actors who are primarily British.

In modern day NYC, Rachel Chu (Wu), lives happily as a university professor with her hot boyfriend and possible future fiancé, Nick Young (Henry Golding). When Nick has to travel back home to Singapore to be in his best friend’s wedding, naturally Rachel tags along as his date. But during the journey she discovers that Nick actually comes from the wealthiest family in the country and all his friends back home are just as highclass. Rachel quickly needs to not only make a good impression as a middleclass outsider but also to Nick’s strict, posh mother, Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh).

The plot is a typical Cinderella theme with some Bridesmaids (2011)-type humor, but the foreign setting brings something fresh. The whole cast has lovely chemistry and the soundtrack of American pop songs translated into Mandarin is a nice touch. DP

A Cowboy’s Perspective

O

n a magical day earlier this month I sat horseback on a narrow mountain ridge in a remote stretch of Montana wilderness, high above the tree line, hooves in the snow. Around me, a majestic view beyond anything I’ve seen on film. With a panorama embracing hundreds of square miles, the only man-made objects in sight were the saddle I was riding on and the clothes on my back. Life’s usual trivia faded from thought and life back home felt impossibly distant. Many of the treasures so dear to me – the ocean, my boat, Dana Point Harbor – lost just a little luster. My mind seriously toyed with a radical lane change to pursue a cowboy life. As I descended the mountain, these thoughts wouldn’t escape, couldn’t escape, and they began to alarm me. Would I recover the marvel of the ocean when I returned home?

Could I return to the boat life with the same devotion as I had left it?

For a few moments I was frightened by the prospect that I’d poisoned the ocean lifestyle I define myself by. Then I began to realize that as fantastic as this day had been, much of the magic was a product of how novel this adventure was to me. It was so radically different from my experiences along our coast or out on the ocean.

There’s hardly been a day in my life when I wasn’t blessed with at least a brief peek of our ocean. So many of my days have been spent on the ocean. And the vast majority of those from the shores of Dana Point. I don’t believe I’ve ever lost an appreciation for how stunning my surroundings are, or how embarrassingly fortunate I am to call this home. Yet, no doubt there are days when I go about the habits of life without stopping to smell the salty air, to listen to the waves lapping our shore, or to ponder the motion of my boat rocking gently in her slip. There are days when this coastal life veers into a routine that conceals its allure. These are the days – left unchecked – that dare to desensitize us to the spectacle around us.

After columnist James Lenthall went on a trip to Big Sky country in Montana, he found himself pondering what it means to love where you are, and where you are from.

So I wonder, does a cowboy riding a remote stretch of Montana wilderness surrender awareness of his great fortune to the cycles of daily life? He must.

Countless times, family visiting from out of town, or a friendly tourist, will point out how marvelous Dana Point is, how fantastic it must be to live here. “Yes, it is,”, I acknowledge automatically. Usually, I move on with the habits of my daily life. But occasionally, gratefully, these remarks nudge me as a sharp reminder to stop in my tracks, to take a deep breath and survey my surroundings. Then a smile and a chill down my spine.

At sea, there have been divine occasions of a panoramic view of an endless ocean where the only man-made objects were the vessel I was riding on and the

clothes on my back. Next time I will wonder, how would a Montana cowboy perceive this moment? Would the usual trivia of his life fade into the background, would home feel impossibly distant?

Would his endless mountain views lose a little of their luster? Would he fantasize of moving to the ocean and discarding the cowboy way? Probably. For a few frightful moments.

When I returned home from the vast Montana wilderness, with my reset button punched hard as a challenge to my way of life, I raced to our harbor to test the endurance of my relationship with the ocean, with Dana Point Harbor. With a rush of tremendous relief, my love of the sea, my devotion to this life, were restored to their true and tested order. Near the top.

More than that, with my faith challenged and triumphant, I committed myself with renewed spirit to do my part to shepherd our Dana Point Harbor into a wondrous future for the next generation, in honor of the past generation, and for all the visiting cowboys.

Online dating has become a huge business. There are hundreds of sites. But does it work for seniors? Yes… and no.

Productive? Many senior couples have found online dating success.

Jeanne emailed, “I met my man on Our Time. He contacted me in September 2015.

I didn’t meet him until March 2016. We met at Starbucks. He was a wonderful man and we got along famously. We waited six months before taking the friendship to a LAT (Living Apart Together) relationship.

Recently, we decided to live together and chose my place! I not only gained a man in my life but his dog and lizard, too. He’s even better than what I had described as my perfect mate!”

My partner Greta has a friend named Dominque.

Gina wrote, “Tinder has a reputation for ‘casual’ relationships. What you see in the ads is all you get, one or a few pictures, a paragraph or nothing at all. You choose to meet based mostly on attraction to each other’s photo.

I thought you might find this guy’s ad interesting. It is an example of what not to say if you want to meet a nice woman.

‘Eugene, age 83, looking for sweet, smart, built, warm and tender, love to travel the world, if you want to have more fun than you’ve ever had, call Geno. Have to be pristine clean, love the warmth and the tenderness of a man, and if not, you’re not in my ballpark, only qualified people call me. P.S. hookers and prostitutes do not call.’

Tinder calls itself the world’s most popular dating site with 20 billion matches.

People as young as 18 use it. The user reviews are filled with complaints about people being banned from the site without explanation. I do not recommend Tinder for seniors.

Dangerous? I read horror stories, including murders, of people who met on Tinder and other sites, some as recent as July and August of this year. Doing background checks is a must when meeting

strangers.

Risky? You bet. The Oct. 21, 2017, issue of the Palm Beach Post (Florida) featured an article written by Debby Montgomery, a 52-year-old widow. She lost $1,080,762.43 to a Nigerian romance scammer without ever meeting the man in person.

He claimed to be an international broker of hardwood trees. When she called his company, they had never heard of him.

Regardless, she kept sending money, even borrowing $100,000 from her parents to give him.

Debby fell in love with an image, which is insane; you can’t judge chemistry until you meet in person. Never send money to someone you’ve never met.

One of my eNewsletter readers, Dr. John Foster, shared tips for women, when posting photos to their online profile, based on his own experiences.

1. Smile for your profile picture. Even if someone must tickle your feet to make you smile 2. Avoid photos where you look maniacally happy, as if you’ve just had a massive dose of cocaine, aim for happy and serene.

3. No sunglasses: the eyes are the window of the soul—be sure your eyes are visible.

4. No digital “enhancements,” such as cartoon cat ears or whiskers.

5. No pictures of you and your ex, with your ex cropped out.

6. Include a face portrait, and one fulllength.

7. Consider the background—I saw one woman with a nice picture of her sitting at a restaurant, but the background was a full garbage can.

8. No pictures of you boozing it up, unless you’re looking for a drinking buddy.

9. If there’s an activity you like, such as golfing, or playing the piano, a picture of you participating is a great idea Is internet dating for seniors? Iffy. It’s a mixed bag. Proceed with caution.

Football Drops Opener in Fourth Quarter The Dolphins debuted their new field on Friday, Aug. 17, but Los Amigos spoiled the party by taking the back-and-forth affair with a fourth-quarter go-ahead score, 19-17, in both team’s season opener at Dana Hills High School.

Dana Hills (0-1) grabbed the lead in the first quarter as junior Trevor Gartlan sprang for a 70-yard rushing touchdown.

Gartlan led Dana Hills with 83 yards rushing on seven carries.

Los Amigos (1-0) answered back in the second quarter with a 17-yard touchdown reception from Brian Pacheco to tie the game, 7-7. Pacheco also led the Lobos with 175 yards rushing on 28 carries and five receptions for 92 yards.

The Dolphins went back ahead on a 25yard field goal from senior Mitchell Stock, but Los Amigos grabbed the lead heading into halftime with a 51-yard touchdown reception by Adolfo Chavez. Dana Hills junior Liam Boersma blocked his first of two extra points on the night to limit the score, 13-10.

Boersma also caused and recovered a fumble.

In the third quarter, Dana Hills got out

in front again on a 31-yard touchdown pass from junior Zack Saavedra to senior Max Burlison, 17-13. Burlison led all Dolphins receivers with five catches for 88 yards and pulled in an interception on defense.

Saavedra finished 7 of 18 passing for 125 yards.

In the fourth quarter, Chavez put Los Amigos ahead again on a 15-yard reception from Brandon Tinoco for the win.

Senior Matthew Lua Mu Poching and junior Sam Schultz co-led Dana Hills with 10 tackles each. Boersma pulled in nine tackles.

Dana Hills travels to Los Angeles on Friday, Aug. 24 to take on Lincoln (0-1). The Lions dropped their opener to Contreras, 7-6.

Volleyball Starts Strong The opening of the 2018 girls volleyball season has been good to Dana Hills.

The Dolphins opened the season on Aug. 14 with a sweep of Yorba Linda, 25-8, 25-15, 25-19. Dana Hills followed up with a back-and-forth, five-set win over Laguna Beach, 18-25, 28-26, 20-25, 25-15, 15-8, on Aug. 16.

Against Laguna Beach, Stila Fresenius led with 19 kills and 16 digs and added five blocks. Drae Fresenius was key with 53 assists, six digs, five kills and three aces.

Over the weekend, the Dolphins advanced to the semifinals of the Tesoro tournament but fell to runner-up Beckman.

Dana Hills took on the Tesoro tournament winner San Clemente on Thursday, Aug. 23, but results were unavailable at press time.

The Dolphins play at Huntington Beach on Friday, Aug. 24 and at Fountain Valley on Tuesday, Aug. 28. DP

Dana Wharf Fish Count Dorado move in to local waters

D

orado have arrived in local waters, and the bass fishing stayed strong at Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said the water temperatures continued to sit between 74 and 78 degrees, which means the bass fishing was still a strong catch. The water temperature is also affecting the kelp, as Woolley said the kelp is “pretty much toast” and a weak hold.

In the coastal trips, anglers are pulling in a fair amount of yellowtail as well as the occasional halibut in between all the bass.

The big item of note is the increase in the dorado for offshore trips. The offshore kelp is holding strong and that’s where the dorado is being strong. Woolley said the Dana Pride limited its offshore load to 40 during the previous week, and the threequarter day trips might get off the beach in the morning to try and pull in some of the dorado.

Wooley said the overnight trips have had success on a group-to-group basis with some going to San Clemente Island

with a chance of yellows and bass and others taking their chances offshore.

Let’s Make It Official Surfing becomes official sport of the state of California

T

his week, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation that honors the long, storied history and modern-day influence of wave-riding in the Golden State. Surfing is now the official sport of the great state of California.

“Nothing represents the California dream better than surfing,” said Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) in a prepared statement to the press.

A co-author of the bill and surfer, he continued, “I’m stoked that we’re celebrating an iconic sport.”

The legislation arrived on the governor’s desk via the state Assembly’s unofficial Surf Caucus. Assemblyman Ian Calderon (D-Whittier) co-authored the bill.

“I’m proud to join Assembly member Muratsuchi in designating surfing as our state sport,” said Calderon when the bill was first introduced in January. “Growing up surfing not only had a significant impact on who I am as a person, but also taught me at a young age to appreciate and cherish our beautiful coastline that we are so fortunate to have here in California.”

with California, one could wonder, what took so long? For over 130 years, surfers have been enjoying the perfect waves up and down the expansive coastline. The first waves in California were ridden in July of 1885. A trio of Hawaiian princes, David Kawananakoa, Edward Keli‘iahonui and Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana‘ole, paddled out at the San Lorenzo river mouth and made history In 1912, Duke Kahanamoku made his first trip from Hawaii to California, sharing the “sport of kings” and spreading the spirit of aloha throughout the state.

It didn’t take long for early pioneers to begin congregating at spots like Palos Verdes and San Onofre. The popularity of the sport continued to pick up momentum throughout the ’30s and ’40s, and by the ’50s surfing had taken hold up and down the coast.

In 1957, with the publication of the nowfamous novel, Gidget: The Little Girl with Big Ideas, all of a sudden mainstream America got a firsthand glimpse into the bohemian life of early Malibu surfers. The book, and subsequent Hollywood production, popularized the sport like never before.

Less than a decade later, in 1964, Dana Point-based filmmaker Bruce Brown released The Endless Summer. Critically acclaimed, it sold out box offices across the country and is largely responsible for the romanticized surf ideal we are so familiar with today. Both Gidget and The Endless Summer would propel the sport of surfing to new heights and expand its reach and influence well beyond the shores of California and Hawaii.

tion of Orange County surfers, began to make a living hustling surfboards, boardshorts and other surf-related gear.

Gordon “Grubby” Clark figured out the perfect formula for blowing polystyrene surfboard blanks. Dale Velzy, Hobie Alter, Terry Martin and numerous others designed the new, lighter foam and fiberglass boards, while iconic area surfers like Phil Edwards, Mickey Munoz and Billy Hamilton (eventual step-father to Laird Hamilton) gave them credence at San Onofre, Trestles, and further afield at Malibu and Rincon.

Meanwhile, down in San Clemente, writer, photographer and artist John Severson began to publish SURFER Magazine in 1960. The publication would come to be known as the “bible of the sport” because of its timely articles and imagery. And in Capo Beach, brothers Walter and Philip “Flippy” Hoffman took the family textile business to the next level, becoming the defacto supplier of fabrics to surfwear brands.

Today, Dana Point and San Clemente remain the preeminent hotbeds for surf talent and design in California. The area is home to numerous world-class surfers, internationally recognized clothing labels and nonprofit surf-based organizations. Lower Trestles stands as one of the most highperformance waves, not just in the state but in the world, while San Onofre remains a stronghold for stoke and longboard style.

It’s been a good ride since those Hawaiian princes first glided shoreward 133 years ago. And now, with surfing named the official sport of California, we’re entering a new era in the culture, lifestyle and sport of surfing. DP

ast weekend was a big one in Huntington Beach—both literally and figuratively. With bombing, 6- to 8-foot surf pumping at the Huntington Pier, the first two events of the NSSA Southwest Conference Explorer season scored some epic summertime conditions.

A handful of rising local talent took full advantage of the surf, but this week’s Grom of the Week goes to a kid who tapped into the source for the first time. Entering his first win at an NSSA contest, Loyal Kenworthy not only made the finals of the Super Grom division, he came away with two division wins over the course of the weekend. Ripping in the overhead surf, it was an impressive way to launch his competitive career.

“Thank you NSSA for the fun contest.

Stoked to get a couple waves and W’s,” said Loyal on his Instagram feed.
