Five things Dana Point should know this week Two Dolphins Beached in Dana Point; Results for Previous Beaching Incidents Inconclusive THE LATEST: As two dolphins died after washing ashore in Dana Point during the last week of July, researchers at Pacific Marine Mammal Center are gathering test results for the dolphins that beached on local shores earlier in the year.

A dolphin washed ashore and died at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point on Monday, July 29 despite rescue attempts from lifeguards, beachgoers and marine life experts. Another dolphin washed ashore and died near the Ocean Institute on Tuesday, July 30.

Tuesday marked the 15th dolphin to wash ashore that the PMMC crew have responded to. The beaching of 10 of those dolphins occurred within 30 days in February and March. Three of those dolphins have shored in Dana Point and Capistrano Beach. In addition to the two dolphins that beached in July, a dolphin was rescued on May 19 in Capistrano Beach.

“All the dolphins we’ve attempted to rescue have died,” said Krysta Higuchi, a spokesperson for PMMC. “The autopsy process for these dolphins is a long process. We’re just now getting results for the 10 dolphins that beached within 30 days, and it’s been frustrating. . . . The results are somewhat inconclusive.”

Higuchi says test results have shown an inflammation of the brains and brain tissues of dolphins that washed ashore.

“We tested for diseases that brain inflammation implicates, but the results have come back negative,” Higuchi said. “So right now we don’t know, and we might not ever know, what is causing these dolphins to die.”

The cetaceans that have beached themselves and died have been common dolphins, with the exception of one.

According to PMMC, the dolphins have varied in age, size and gender.

OC Democrats Outearning GOP in Congressional Races THE LATEST: More than $7 million has been poured into the war chests of 2020 candidates running in Orange County’s seven congressional district races, with most of that money going toward Democrats looking to capitalize on their sweeping victories in 2018.

The latest campaign finance disclosures filed with the Federal Election Commission and compiled by the Dana Point Times show that the seven congressional incumbents— all Democrats—have raked in $4.47 million from donors, outearning their Republican challengers by about $1.8 million.

Congressional Democratic candidates who are hoping to maintain control of the U.S. House of Representatives also currently have the upper hand on a national level, as they’ve collectively raised $151.42 million in campaign contributions so far, while Republicans have received $120.41 million, according to the FEC. Campaign contributions for the U.S. Senate races show another side of the

elections, as Republican collections have far exceeded that of Democrats, who have raised just shy of $82 million compared to the GOP’s roughly $111.55 million.

One way the local GOP is hoping to get more donations to their congressional candidates is through the recent launch of WinRed, a digital fundraising tool to generate grassroots support for Republican candidates in federal-, local- and state-level elections.

Randall Avila, executive director to the Republican Party of Orange County, said WinRed’s competitor, ActBlue, was very beneficial for congressional Democratic candidates in 2018. The WinRed site, Randall explained, allows donors to contribute to one campaign and then be notified of other candidates to whom they can donate.

“So we’re focused on building our war chest to engage with people who are aren’t large donors,” Avila said, adding that a lot of local money from large donors doesn’t necessarily stay in the county. “We want a lot of that money to stay here.”

Avila said the money OCGOP and its candidates raise will help in their efforts to regain the four congressional seats they lost in 2018.

In last year’s November elections, Democrats turned all seven of the congressional districts that encompass cities in Orange County blue by flipping four seats—the 39th, 45th, 48th and 49th—that

had long been held by Republicans.

California’s congressional districts were last redrawn in 2011 using updated Census data. Even before then, the 49th District, which encompasses Dana Point, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano as well as cities in North San Diego County, had been red.

That was until Rep. Mike Levin, who’s serving his first term on Capitol Hill, won the seat against Republican Diane Harkey.

Ada Briceño, chairperson to the Democratic Party of Orange County, said the local party’s aim in 2020 is to build upon their inroads made in 2018 by building a stronger base and also winning more of the city council races and school board seats.

“We’re going to continue to work hard and build upon what we did in 2018,” she said, noting that will include “building our stronger base and making sure that we are even taking down ballot races, so taking seats in city councils and school boards and so forth.”

So far, Rep. Katie Porter of the 45th District is the OC Democrats’ top earner, receiving nearly $1.4 million in campaign contributions, with Rep. Harley Rouda of the 48th District not very far behind, having collected about $1.06 million.

In the race for the 49th, Levin’s campaign has taken in more than $891,000 in contributions.

Briceño attributes the freshman incumbent’s fundraising to his sponsorship and introduction of legislation meant to protect the environment, take care of veterans and support the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obamacare.

“We feel very proud of the fundraising that Mike Levin has been able to do so far,” Briceño said. “A lot of it comes from grassroots. He set out to do what he set out to do, and people are responsive.”

This past March, San Juan Capistrano Mayor Brian Maryott, a Republican, threw his hat into the 2020 race to unseat Levin.

Since launching his campaign, Maryott has collected $406,521 in contributions and received the endorsement of the OCGOP, among a handful of other groups and local elected officials.

Mara Fortin, a second Republican candidate who announced her bid to also take on Levin this past June, had raised $19,970 shortly after filing her statement of candidacy. However, according to her campaign’s FEC filings, Fortin, who owns several Nothing Bundt Cake franchises in San Diego, refunded her donors later that month.

The DP Times has reached out to Fortin through her business, but as of press time, she had not returned an emailed request for comment.

Suspect Arrested for Murder of Dana Point Drummer THE LATEST: Anaheim homicide detectives arrested a suspect in the murder of 48-year-old musician David McCabe, a longtime Dana Point resident, on July 26.

McCabe was found beaten to death in an Anaheim cul-de-sac in the early-morning hours of Saturday, July 20.

Arthur Williams, a 34-year-old Santa Ana resident, was arrested without incident on Wednesday, July 24, at a Santa Ana hospital. He was taken to Orange County Jail and booked the same day on suspicion of murder, according to Anaheim police. He is currently being held on one count of firstdegree murder in lieu of a $1 million bail.

Anaheim police have confirmed that Williams and McCabe were acquaintances.

Authorities have yet to release a statement regarding the suspect’s motive and will not publicize a booking photo until after the investigation is over.

McCabe’s body was found by a passerby, who called police. He was found dead at the scene. Authorities have stated that his injuries are consistent with those from blunt force trauma. According to an Anaheim Police Department press release, McCabe’s car, a gray 2013 Toyota Corolla 4-door with California License Plate 6YSH330, was not found at the scene and is yet to be recovered.

McCabe was the drummer in the punk rock band, Knightenders.

About the third week of August, the barge will move north until it is directly in line with the pier, and then it will work its way northward, according to McGee. The northernmost portion of the new reef will be located just off of Beach Road on the southern tip of Capistrano Beach.

The project is anticipated to pause in September and resume next year in May and September 2020.

McGee said the rock is being placed in a single layer at depths of 38- to 48-feetdeep in areas that are “heavily studied, very precise locations.”

The reef material includes metavolcanic and granitic boulders about one-half to three feet in diameter and hail from rock quarries in Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico.

SCE warns that boaters should be aware of the barge.

“We have six anchors stabilizing the barge, secured by very large white surge cans,” McGee said. “We need boaters to have a 2,500-foot clearance around the derrick barge. It is a construction zone. The anchor wires are under extreme tension, because they are stabilizing this large barge in the open ocean.”

The project manager said other watercraft—such as kayakers and paddlers— should also keep a safe distance from not only the barge but the two tugboats that are bringing rock to the barge.

“We just don’t want boaters going in between the wires and barge itself or getting too close to the surge cans,” said McGee. SCE has contracted Connelly Pacific to

help with the reef construction.

“We are really excited,” she said. “It’s going to create giant kelp habitat.”

WHAT’S NEXT: For boaters, the project is listed in the U.S. Coast Guard Local Notice to Mariners, which provides call signs and radio frequencies for the derrick barge and tugboats working on the reef project.

Dana Point Author’s True Crime Novel is Being Made into a Documentary THE LATEST: Dana Point-based author Frank McAdams is joining forces with Australian production company White Sparks Production, Perth to take his true crime novel, Last Affair, to the screen as a television episode.

The crew was scheduled to begin filming and production in late July or early August.

Last Affair: The Shocking True Story of Marriage and Murder follows the murder trial of Richard Overton and the story behind the murder of his wife, Jan Overton—a school board official of the Capistrano Unified School District. The case that captivated the nation in 1988 is closely analyzed and detailed in McAdams’ novel.

First intrigued by the case through the media coverage, McAdams saw an opportunity to take this highly publicized case in a much different direction in the form of a book.

“When I read the summary of homicide investigator Tim Carney’s role in the cold

case . . . I felt that the real story was not the trial but the year and one-half investigation that led to the trial,” said McAdams.

McAdams was later able to meet with Carney, now a retired Orange County Sheriff’s Investigator. With both of their intentions and mindsets aligning, the two decided to sign a contract and co-write Last Affair.

Since the publishing of the novel, Last Affair has been featured in a multitude of television works and features, including True Detective and Forensic Files. White Sparks Production will be featuring McAdams as a highlighted figure throughout the upcoming episode.

“We spent three hours on background and specific questions, centered around Overton’s sociopathic character traits, Jan’s success as a school district trustee and school board president, and Tim’s determination to get the forensic evidence to convict,” McAdams said.

The episode will take a more factual stance rather than a “docu-drama” style.

McAdams’ interviews and input will be included in the interview-heavy episode.

With the recent growth in interest and popularity in crime and mystery television, the Overton case and McAdams’ work have continued to grab the attention of viewers and readers alike.

“The reader today cannot seem to get enough of true crime,” said McAdams.

Reef under Construction off San Clemente Shore THE LATEST: If you’re wondering what that barge is doing south of the San Clemente pier not quite a mile offshore, it is the platform from which Southern California Edison has begun laying rock for its Wheeler North Expansion Project into Dana Point.

Wheeler North Reef, a 174-acre, manmade kelp forest, currently stretches from out past the end of the San Clemente Pier south to Seal Rock. SCE is expanding the reef to more than double the size (384 acres) and stretching it into Dana Point waters. Mandated by the California Coastal Commission, the reef is intended to facilitate kelp forests that were lost to warm-water discharge from the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).

Jenny McGee, project manager for Wheeler North Expansion Project, said the Derrick Barge Long Beach is now stationed at the project’s southernmost point in San Clemente.

NB I-5 Set to Close Overnight in Central OC Northbound I-5 between SR-55 and SR-22 is scheduled to close overnight from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, and again from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3 as part of the I-5 Central County Improvements Project.

According to a press release issued by Orange County Transportation Authority, the closures are necessary to demolish the I-5/ Main Street carpool bridge, which permanently closed traffic in April. The bridge is being demolished to make room for a second carpool lane that will be added to I-5 between SR-55 and SR-57 as part of the project.

In addition to the freeway closure, Main Street between Santa Clara Avenue and MainPlace Drive is expected to close overnight on Friday, and the SR-55 connectors and SR-57 carpool connector to I-5 are expected to close both nights. There also will be a 36-hour closure of the northbound I-5 Main Street onramp and Broadway off-ramp, extending from 10 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Sunday.

Detours will be established to guide drivers around the closures. To see up-todate closure and detour information, visit octa.net/i5centralmap for the project’s interactive map.

“The I-5 Central County Improvements Project will help speed up commutes and alleviate traffic on I-5 in Santa Ana, Orange and Tustin, an area traveled by 380,000 drivers every day. Traffic on that stretch of I-5 is expected to climb to more than 400,000 vehicles a day by 2035,” the release stated.

In addition to adding a second carpool lane in each direction between SR-55 and SR-57, the project will remove the concrete barriers between the carpool and regular lanes, and the carpool lanes will be striped for continuous access.

The $41.5 million project is funded with federal dollars and by Measure M, also known as OC Go, Orange County’s halfcent sales tax for transportation improvements. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2021.

SHACC Reports Fraudulent Fundraising Attempt Glenn Brumage, executive director of the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center, reported to media outlets that someone was using SHACC’s name and falsely claiming over the phone to be fundraising for the center.

Brumage said in a press release, “We do not solicit donations or support over the phone.”

New Leadership for Mission Hospital Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach has appointed a new chief executive, longtime health care executive Seth R. Teigen.

Teigen was most recently president at Ascension Healthcare’s St. Francis and Franklin hospitals in Wisconsin and has more than 23 years of experience working in the nonprofit health care system.

Teigen succeeds Tarek Salaway, who relocated to the Bay Area late last year.

Teigen will be joining Mission Hospital on August 5, on the heels of the opening of the Judi and Bill Leonard Institute for Cancer, Prevention, Treatment, and Wellness.

This will serve as the only comprehensive cancer center in South Orange County.

The Institute will house a research and clinical trial program, a nurse navigation program, radiation oncology, imaging services, an infusion center, complementary

therapies and an education center.

Mission Hospital has been serving the community for more than 40 years and provides a full range of specialty health care services from highly trained professionals. Teigen will make an excellent addition to the Mission Hospital team, given all the recognition he’s received for his work. Letters to the Editor SAN CLEMENTE HOMELESS CAMP SANDY HIGHBERG, San Clemente

As most of you obviously know, the homeless city lot encampment has been growing exponentially. The homeless community far and wide is finding out about the free camping and free food from FAM that is offered in the beautiful beach town of San Clemente.

I have a friend who was in New York, and she knew a homeless person who was talking about how they are going to try to get to San Clemente because they heard how wonderful it is. Heck, I cannot blame them; if I were homeless, I would do whatever it takes to get to this

town.

But now, this small town cannot just sit back and allow this homeless community to grow and grow. Dear City Council, please answer my question: what is the San Clemente City Council discussing or planning? I feel we, the citizens, are all in the dark.

Yes, there needs to be a regional shelter, but placing it here would potentially bring in hundreds of more homeless citizens that we do not have the health care, police protection or any resources to support such an influx. San Clemente, including south San Clemente, needs to know that this population of people will not just be sitting at the proposed regional shelter off Pico all day; they will be going to our beaches, and crime will definitely increase in all areas of San Clemente. It will change the face of our community.

This shelter needs to be more centrally located—not placed at the far southern tip of the county. Please, everyone write emails to the city council to beg for this

not to happen. The council needs to strongly represent us and fight for this not to happen.

We the people of San Clemente cannot just sit around texting and complaining about this growing homeless population.

Just drive by the city lot; it is growing by the day. Something needs to be done very soon before they make roots. We must all loudly and persistently voice our opinions.

At the Movies: ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ a Funny, Retro Fairytale

hat can be said about the late 1960s that hasn’t already been said? By 1968, peace and love were at an all-time high, and it looked as if the only place to go from there was down. And in 1969, that’s essentially what happened with the overcrowded chaos of Woodstock, the violence at Altamont and 10 murders caused by the Manson cult.

In Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, it’s pretty much exactly what you would expect from Quentin Tarantino rewriting 1960s history for his own art.

Tarantino’s version of 1969 has everything still euphoric and free-spirited. Our leads are fictional TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rick’s friend and regular stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Rick’s on the verge of a midlife crisis over the fact that he’s now

viewed as a has-been. Our female lead is the very real Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie), who is living it up with her buddies in Hollywood as the next big starlet.

Like most of Tarantino’s movies, he overstays his welcome with the runtime. But unlike Django Unchained (2012) and Hateful Eight (2015), which feel almost sluggish by the end, Hollywood manages to fully keep our interest. The new film is surprisingly the least graphic by the director’s usual violent standards and even more surprisingly has a lot of sentimentality.

There are a couple of scenes that veer closely to “fanfiction” territory, yet on top of all of this, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is just straight-up funny. If you can handle some revisionist history for the sake of entertainment, this could be one of the better movies you see this summer. DP

he flipside of Paris and many of our favorite destinations experiencing over 100-degree temperatures is that staycation became cool. This is the center of the universe if you look at Dana Point’s trolley map. San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and Laguna Beach trolleys are all connected with Dana Point trolleys. Pretend you are a tourist for a weekend and explore with the trolleys.

The Conscious collection (green tag) uses recycled fibers from your “goodies,” and other materials such as citrus peel, pineapple leaves and algae biomass. It recently won praise by Forbes: “It’s inspiring to see a massive company like H&M make tremendous strides toward a more sustainable business structure. This past year, they’ve shifted from a linear business model to a circular business model. A circular business model is one where materials are reused for as long as possible, which in turn significantly reduces waste.”

Nike • “Back in 1994, [Nike] began its Grind program, which turns used sneakers and surplus materials into running tracks, among other uses. And since 2010, Nike has diverted 6.4 billion plastic bottles from landfills, thanks in part to products such as the Nike Air VaporMax Flyknit shoe, which is made with more than 75 percent recycled materials,” ELLE magazine wrote.

But I’d also point out recycling doesn’t offset the other problems of the fashion industry. To lure us to buy more than we need, the companies compete on irresistibly low prices, which are squeezed from exploited labor and environmental shortcuts. We should prioritize thusly: buy less, buy used, buy fair-trade.

Do You Know About the Wellness & Prevention Coalition?

O

ne of the most important responsibilities of the Wellness & Prevention Center staff is our leadership of the Wellness & Prevention Coalition.

The Wellness & Prevention (WP) Coalition is part of the Federal Office of National Drug Control Policies Drug-Free Communities program. Through a five-year grant, we receive $125,000 per year to lead a coalition made up of every sector in our community. The mission of the WP Coalition is to lower the use of nicotine, alcohol, marijuana and illegal drugs by youth under the age of 21.

When we wrote this grant request three years ago, we chose lowering past 30-day use of alcohol WELLNESS AND and marijuana among our PREVENTION youth as our measurable

At our last nationwide training in Washington, D.C., we were encouraged to include programming to help youth understand the health impact of vaping devices and to lower the stigma surrounding youth

Last week, we held our second annual WP Coalition leadership strategy session.

Following are a few key updates and some of our objectives for the next year: Accomplishments of the Wellness & Prevention Coalition: • When we started the funded coalition in 2017, the California Healthy Kids Survey data reported past 30-day use of alcohol for seventh-, ninth- and 11th-graders were 4%, 16%, and 35%, respectively. In the most recent data, the past 30-day use of alcohol for seventh-, ninth- and 11th-graders were 2%, 13% and 27%, respectively.

• San Clemente High School has a very active youth coalition that has made an impact on their peers through both on-campus and community-wide events. One of their favorite events is “Puttin’ on the Glitz,” where they serve hot chocolate and pass out red ribbons for car door handles to remind the community to drive responsibly.

• Per the request of community members, we have increased education, online and through live events, that focuses on both the health impact of vaping and guidance on navigating the complicated social media world.

Objectives for next year: • Increase WP Coalition focus on environmental factors that influence youth vaping, including partnering with city government to possibly ban the sales of flavored cartridges for vaping devices, attempted buys at local vape shops, and a town hall to get input from the community on their views about how we can help youth make healthy choices.

• Increase the voice of our youth in planning and implementation by facilitating youth coalitions in middle schools.

• Develop a sustainability plan that ensures the continuation of WP Coalition work past the Federal grant funding award.

• Plan to increase community knowledge

Free to Fly Citizen Scientists Take Initiative to Create Butterfly Sanctuaries amid Threats of Pesticides and Habitat Loss

R

esidents in Dana Point are taking initiatives to create environmental sanctuaries for the monarch butterfly in order to combat habitat loss and uphold the namesake of the Monarch Beach area.

The Monarch Hills Homeowners Association formed a Monarch Butterfly Committee earlier this year to oversee the development of a Monarch Butterfly Waystation. Monarch Waystations are places that provide resources necessary for monarchs to produce successive generations and sustain their migration.

Each fall, hundreds of millions of monarch butterflies migrate from the United States and Canada to central Mexico, where the winter conditions allow them a return flight in the spring. The establishment of waystations has been a way to combat habitat loss for butterflies.

According to MonarchWatch.org, milkweeds and nectar sources are declining due to development and the widespread use of herbicides in croplands, pastures and roadsides. Because 90% of all milkweed/monarch habitats occur within the agricultural landscape, farm practices have the potential to strongly influence monarch populations. Registered waystation habitats include milkweeds, nectar and host plants for larvae and energy sources for adult butterflies.

“By creating and maintaining a Monarch Waystation, we are contributing to monarch conservation, an effort that will help assure the preservation of the species and the continuation of the spectacular monarch migration phenomenon,” said HOA President Ken Torbert. “Without milkweeds throughout their spring and summer breeding areas in North America, monarchs would not be able to produce the successive generations that culminate in the migration each fall.”

Monarch Hills was officially registered as a Monarch Butterfly Waystation on June 21.

Dayna Anderson, a Monarch Hills resident, helped lead the efforts in the neighborhood to create the monarch butterfly-friendly garden.

“It doesn’t take much to make a difference. Even small groups like ours and my 6-year-old grandson can make a dent,” Anderson said. “Little by little, we can overcome big business and Big Pharma like Monsanto or Bayer and help the butterflies thrive once again. stop using glyphosate-based pesticides (e.g., Roundup) and give both butterflies and also the bees a fighting chance. It’s a case of David and Goliath. We can make a difference.”

Monarch Beach is so named because its rolling hills once offered a breeding ground for the monarch butterfly. The butterflies were once seen there in large masses, but have disappeared from the area due to development and loss of habitat.

Monarch Hills isn’t the only local community to take the initiative in creating butterfly habitat. South Coast Water District has a “Water-Wise Demonstration & Butterfly Garden” designed by Jodie

“It’s important to plant the natives, as the exotic tropical ones are shown to be detrimental and also host parasites,” Alison said. “Milkweed plants are the sole larval host plant for the monarch caterpillars.”

The adult butterflies are searching for milkweeds to lay their eggs so that their emerging caterpillars will feed on the milkweed leaves. The milkweeds naturally have toxic chemicals in the sap that the caterpillars are tolerant of. As a result,

the caterpillars become toxic to birds and other predators as a defense mechanism.

“The milkweeds are important, but having other butterfly-attracting plants are equally important to provide nectar for the adult butterflies—such as buckwheats,” Alison said. “Once the caterpillars have enough milkweed, they seek a place to pupate and form their chrysalis and later emerge as a butterfly. Therefore, it’s important to have other shrub or trees around the milkweed, such as sages.”

Outrigger Ohana Crowdfunding campaign launched for documentary on Dana Outrigger Canoe Club

T

he Dana Outrigger Canoe Club has traveled, paddled and competed all over the world, and their next adventure takes them to the world of film.

The Dana Outrigger Canoe Club is the subject of a new documentary film project titled The Outrigger. The documentary would tell the story of how people find meaning in their lives through a connection to the ocean, the power of sports and being part of a community, the “ohana.”

The project would be a 30-minute documentary shot as a black-and-white film, with a scheduled release date of April 2020.

The director of the film is Dana Outrigger Canoe Club member Scott Council.

Council is a portrait photographer and director with a long list of famous subjects, including Dr. Dre, LeBron James, Beyonce, Betty White, Stephen Colbert, Will Smith, Tiger Woods and Elon Musk,

Dana Wharf Fish Count Yellowtail move in along the coast

ellowtail are becoming more plentiful along the coast, and the first dorado of the season was pulled in last week on a Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching expedition.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said that more coastal yellowtail are coming in. The Boardroom pulled in a 30-pound yellowtail, but Woolley said they are seeing more yellowtail than they’re hooking along the coast right now.

On those coastal half-day and threequarter-day trips, bass is still the headliner, with calico bass plentiful on the north and south sides of the harbor. Woolley said that down the coast along San Onofre and into the Barn Kelp, the bass fishing has been particularly good for the threequarter-day trips. Fly-lined sardines are getting the best looks.

Council has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help complete the film and take it from its current four-minute sample to the full 30-minute story. The campaign site said the crowdfunding effort allows to make a film for the people by the people.

The campaign runs through September 3, and so far the Kickstarter has reached $9,357 of the $125,000 goal.

In the four-minute preview, John Skorstad serves as the early subject and narrator.

“The rhythm of the water, you feel it in your body,” Skorstad says in the preview.

“You get used to it, your body works with it, and you feel a part of it. When I’m in the water, whether it be under the water or paddling, I can always feel grounded, in a sense.”

The preview, providing a moving setting in the artful black and white, provides an incredible amount of angles and points of view to immerse you in the water and capture that rhythm.

The preview continues the pitch of the project and follows the thread from connecting with the water, to connecting with the canoe club family and finishing with the rush of a competitive paddle race.

While the yellowtail is moving in along the coast, the yellowtail have practically been jumping into the boats over at San Clemente Island and Catalina Island. The all-day trips have caught a good number of yellowtail in the morning and added some bass to round out the day. Woolley said the difficult part of fishing over at Catalina right now is navigating the increase of boat traffic. When they can get away from the other boats, the yellowtail is there, along with bass, bonito and barracuda.

Last Saturday, the first dorado catch of the season came in on the Clemente.

The boat took an extra minute to look around the kelp and was able to hook one of the few dorado found.

“When I joined the canoe club, I felt like I joined a community of good people who had a sense of family, the ‘ohana’,” Skorstad says in the preview. “When you put a boat together with various paddlers, and you go out and all of a sudden something clicks, and we’re paddling as one, and the boat moves in the most special way it can, it’s a very profound feeling.”

If completed, the film will focus on several members of the Dana Outrigger

Canoe Club, including Skorstad, Dave Brozowski, Billy Kho, Gerald “G” Montes, Ray Owen and Bryan Pesartic.

If the funding goal is reached by September 3, preproduction would start immediately and be followed by filming interviews and a crossing to Catalina Island.

In October and November, filming would continue in Hawaii. Post-production would take place from November through February before a release in April 2020. DP

Seventeen-year-old San Clemente surfer Samantha Sibley wins 2019 Super Girl Pro

hen it comes to making the big time in surfing, sometimes all it takes is a breakout win to initiate the upward trajectory. Last Sunday, 17-year-old San Clemente surfer Samantha Sibley won the Nissan Super Girl Pro in Oceanside. And just like that, she’s gone from regular fixture in the Grom of the Week feature to potentially qualifying for the WSL’s 2020 Championship Tour.

Billed as the “world’s largest women’s surf contest,” the Super Girl Pro drew top names from around the world, including current world No. 1 and three-time world champion Carissa Moore, Bethany Hamilton and San Clemente resident Caroline Marks.

Undaunted, Sibley went into the contest rated 52nd in the WSL Qualifying Series.

“I’ve been coming to this event ever since I was little, standing on this beach, taking pictures with all my heroes, and now to be the Super Girl, I’m at a loss for words,” Sibley said after her big win.

Sibley’s road to the top of the podium was anything but easy. In the quarterfinals, she had to go up against her San Clemente sparring partner and reigning WSL junior world champ, Kirra Pinkerton. After edging out her friend, the semifinals and finals would prove to be a huge test for Sibley.

Drawing Marks in the semis, one would have assumed Sibley’s dream run was going to come to a close. Marks is currently ranked fifth in the world and was the 2018 WSL

t the beginning of the year, Dana Point’s Bethany Zelasko won her first pro contest, the Shoe City Pro in Santa Cruz. She earned $600 for the effort.

What a difference a few months make.

Thanks to her Canadian citizenship, 18-year-old Zelasko is currently competing at the Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru. For the first time, surfing has been included in the Games, which would be historic enough; but there’s more.

Because of the way that the qualification process is structured for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Zelasko could potentially be one of the first surfers to punch a ticket to Dana Point Times August 2-8, 2019

Rookie of the Year on the Championship Tour. But Sibley and Marks are the same age, both surf Lowers often, and so maybe the disparity in experience wasn’t that much of a factor, after all. In a low-scoring heat, Sibley took the win and moved on to the finals.

Facing Tatiana Weston-Webb, who’s also currently ranked in the top 10 in the world, Sibley again had her work cut out for her.

Ironically, Weston-Webb had been staying with Sibley during the contest and helping to mentor her through her first experience on the big stage. But it didn’t take long for the student to become the teacher. Sibley dropped the hammer, winning the Super Girl Pro in convincing fashion.

“This is by far the best day of my life, and I cannot believe I just won the Super Girl,” Sibley said. “I’ve been working so hard leading up to this event, and to see it pay off, I can’t believe it. This is the most prestigious event in my opinion, and to win it is out of

the Olympics. With countries from all over North and South America represented at the Pan Am Games, the winner of the men’s and women’s shortboard divisions will be awarded a spot in the 2020 Summer Games.

“It’s amazing to surf really good waves and get a chance to qualify for the Olympics,” Zelasko told the Canadian press from the contest site in Lima. “I really want a spot, and I’m looking to do it here.”

Zelasko won her opening-round heat, and as this story goes to press, she is preparing for her Round 2 heat against Argentina’s Ornella Pellizzari.

“I’m representing something greater than myself,” she said. “Representing Canada is an opportunity not only to show what I have, but the gift that they’ve given to me.” DP

this world. It meant the world to me to be out there with Tatiana. She’s so strong, and if I could’ve picked any heat with any surfer, it’d be her. I’ve looked up to her for years, and now we’re really good friends, so to be in a Final with her was just the cherry on top.”

“Sam and I were staying together the entire event and spoke it into existence,” Weston-Webb said, smiling when it was over. “I talked about how fun it would be to share a final against Sam at the beginning of the event, and to have it come true was really cool. I’m super proud of her, and it’s so awesome to see.”

For the effort, Sibley flies up the ratings, moving from 52 up to No. 6. It’s still a long season, and there are a lot more qualification points left to be had, but it’s a huge step forward not only for Sibley, but also for Pinkerton, who now sits third on the qualifying series. At the end of the year, the top six surfers from the qualify-

ing series rankings get a spot on the elite WSL Championship Tour (barring those who have already qualified through the Championship Tour rankings).

“I’m so stoked to move so far up the rankings. At the beginning of the year, I didn’t feel like it was my time to qualify, but now it’s right there in my grasp,” said Sibley.

Up next, Sibley, Pinkerton and a whole crew of local South Orange County pro surfers are getting after it all week in the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, with the finals on Sunday, Aug. 4.

The annual spectacle draws hundreds of thousands of fans every year and also features BMX and skateboard competitions.
