Five things Dana Point should know this week Dana Hills Alum Awaits Jury Deliberation for Murder Trial THE LATEST: The trial for a man who allegedly stabbed a 22-year-old to death at Patsy’s Irish Pub in Laguna Niguel came to a close on Wednesday, Dec. 11. As of press time, jurors were set to begin deliberating over whether the killing was out of anger or an act of self-defense.

Craig Tanber, 41, stands accused of the murder of Shayan Mazroei outside the bar over Labor Day weekend in 2015. The trial, which started about three weeks ago, has focused on Tanber’s motive. The pub is located at 28971 Golden Lantern, in Laguna Niguel, about six miles from Dana Point.

Tanber is a former Dana Hills High School student, according to a Facebook page that was established for him while he was last in prison.

Around midnight the night of the slaying, Tanber was involved in an “altercation” with Mazroei in which Tanber allegedly stabbed Mazroei in the upper torso. Paramedics took him to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Tanber has been associated with the prison-based and Southern California gang known as Public Enemy Number 1, or PENI, a white supremacists organization that, according to FBI information, is known for distribution of methamphetamines, credit card fraud and identity theft.

In 2004, Tanber was implicated in the death of a 26-year-old Huntington Beach man, according to police records. Tanber was one of nine suspects in the case and was eventually found guilty as an accessory to manslaughter. The original trial end in a mistrial because a juror had performed illegal research on one of the defendants.

In 2007, Tanber pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and was sentenced to six years in prison.—Lillian Boyd

Classic potato latkes will be served along with coffee, donuts, and chocolate coins. There will also be a caricature artist, crafts for kids, music and more.

“The message of Hanukkah is the message of light,” says Rabbi Eli Goorevitch.

“The nature of light is that it is always victorious over darkness. A small amount of light dispels a lot of darkness. Another act of goodness and kindness, another act of light, can make all the difference.”

Dana Point’s Menorah is one of more than 15,000 large public Menorahs sponsored by Chabad in more than 100 countries around the world, including in front of landmarks such as the White House, Eiffel Tower, and the Kremlin.

Goorevitch says the global tradition aims to help children and adults of all walks of life discover and enjoy the holiday message.

Music Preserves Recognized at CUSD Board Meeting THE LATEST: After being recognized as Extra Milers during a regular meeting of the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees on Wednesday, Dec. 11, Anthony Small—one of the founders of the Music Preserves Foundation, along with Patti Compton—said they are delighted to present their music history

program to students at Wood Canyon Elementary.

Small and Compton are also active with high school students when it comes to festivals and the Merry Monarch event, a musical and seasonal event that raises money for CUSD music programs.

“We’re so appreciative to be recognized for our pilot program that we’ve brought into Wood Canyon Elementary,” Compton said after the recognition at the Board of Trustees meeting.

“It was our first time working with the students in this way, and we’re just happy (the CUSD Board of Trustees) is recognizing us at this (regular meeting).”

The foundation provides valuable music and arts education and cultural learning opportunities for local students and the community, Compton said in previous a Music Preserves Foundation press release.

“Music is about connection, and there is a great opportunity to capture the allure of the music that flows through Dana Point and use it to create educational opportunities and forge greater connection and understanding through music,” Compton said.

Monarch Beach Resort Sells for Nearly Half-Billion Dollars THE LATEST: Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point was purchased for $497 million by Redwood City-based Ohana Real Estate Investors, the Orange County Register reports.

The five-star hotel, which offers 400 rooms on a bluff-top, 162-acre property, had been purchased by Denver-based KSL Capital Partners in 2014.

The 2014 seller was an affiliate of Seattle-based Washington Holdings, LLC that had ownership of the property since 2010 after Citigroup had foreclosed on the hotel in 2009.

“Despite all that the resort has to offer, we are planning to bring it to an even higher level,” Bernard Siegel, principal for KSL, had written in a release.

In 2009, Dana Point Times reported that St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort defaulted on a $70-million loan from Citigroup Global Markets Realty Group. Ultimately, the resort’s owners Page 3

defaulted on $300 million of its loans that year. This came a year after the hotel had faced negative press coverage when it hosted an executive retreat for American International Group just days after the insurer had received a federal bailout. In 2010, the hotel’s value was appraised as low as $100 million, the Register reported.

Discussion Held on Placement of Drop-Box Locations for Election Ballots THE LATEST: Changes are coming in the way voters in Dana Point and the rest of the county cast their ballots starting with the 2020 Primary Election in March.

The County of Orange next spring will move away from the traditional precinct polling sites and begin to utilize vote centers, giving voters the choice to either submit their ballots via mail or deliver them in person to various locations around the county prior to the day of elections.

The Orange County Board of Supervisors in February approved the implementation of the new vote-center model, which is allowed under the California Voter’s Choice Act (VCA) that former Gov. Jerry Brown enacted in 2016.

“In 2018, almost 70% of the registered voters in Orange County voted by mail,” David Goulding, a representative of the Orange County Registrar of Voters, told the San Clemente Planning Commission on Dec. 4. “They sent in a ballot or they dropped off a ballot at a polling place.

Most people aren’t voting in person, so there’s a need to have a place to drop off their ballots, because that’s what they choose to do.”

According to the OC Registrar of Voters, more than 1.1 million vote-by-mail ballots were issued to the county’s voters, making up nearly 70% of the total registered voters in Orange County.

Ahead of the state’s Primary Elections on March 3, voters in the county will receive vote-by-mail ballots. They’ll then have three options to cast their votes: return the completed ballot to the county registrar’s office via mail; drop the ballot into a dropbox location; or deliver it in person to a vote center, similar to precincts.

Voters can personally take their ballots to any one of the vote centers and metal drop boxes within the county, regardless of the city in which they reside.

$128 Million Announced for Camp Pendleton Construction U.S. Representative Mike Levin (D-CA) announced $128 million in military construction funding for Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton under the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

The NDAA also includes other key priorities, including proposals in his bipartisan Ensuring Safe Housing for our Military Act, an amendment to provide additional funding for the Naval University Research Initiative, and an amendment to require a comprehensive report from the Secretary of Defense on the DoD’s “Combating Trafficking in Persons Initiative.”

“Overall, this bill makes critical progress for servicemembers and their families around Camp Pendleton, and I look forward to seeing it signed into law,” Levin said in a news release.

The $128 million for Camp Pendleton includes $71.7 million for a new mess hall and warehouse, $17.7 million for an ambulatory care center and dental clinic replacement, and $38.87 million for an I Marine Expeditionary Force consolidated information center.

Los Angeles counties to obtain a REAL ID, the California DMV will open its Sana Ana Field Office for a one-day Saturday service this weekend.

As part of the new federal requirement beginning Oct. 1, 2020, residents looking to board flights within the U.S. and access secure federal facilities and military bases must be able to show a valid passport or other federally approved document, including a REAL ID driver license or identification card.

The DMV’s Santa Ana Field Office is located at 1330 East First Street. The oneday-only REAL ID service on Saturday, Dec. 14, will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Orange County Kids Make Stuffed Animals for Toy Drive Children from Our Lady of Fatima Academy in San Clemente were some of the many elementary school kids throughout Orange County who helped make stuffed animals to give to at-risk youth.

On Monday, Dec. 9, children aged 4 to 12 participated in the project as part of the Little Villagers’ afterschool program to make more than 40 stuffed animals that will be included in a toy drive through the Illumination Foundation.

Participating schools included Our Lady of Fatima Academy, as well as Renascence International School in Costa Mesa, St. Bonaventure School in Huntington Beach and St. Junipero Serra School in Rancho Santa Margarita.

“The kids were so excited to make these stuffed animals for children in need.

It warms the heart to see kids giving to kids, and it is a beautiful way to celebrate the holiday season,” Little Villagers cofounder Kristine Darroch said in a press release.

The kids stuffed each plush toy with cotton fiberfill and a gold star, with a special wish for the child receiving the stuffed animal. Each animal comes with a birth certificate with their name, birthdate and place of birth, and an outfit provided by Texas-based Animaland.

“We thank Little Villagers for helping our at-risk youth served by Illumination Foundation. The spirit of giving demonstrated by Little Villagers kids illuminates the way for youth in need,” Amanda Stinson Delgado, volunteer coordinator at Illumination Foundation, said in the release.

Each stuffed animal was placed in a gift bag decorated by the kids in the program, then delivered to Illumination Foundation on December 9.

Clint Eastwood Screens New Film to Marines at Camp Pendleton Filmmaker Clint Eastwood met with U.S. Marines, sailors and base residents at Camp Pendleton on Saturday, Dec. 7, giving them an advanced screening of his new movie, Richard Jewell, at the base’s theater.

The actor and director is no stranger to the local Marine base, as he has previously visited there, including when he filmed Heartbreak Ridge in 1986, according to local news reports.

“The place has changed so much because the base has gotten huge,” Eastwood said in a video interview that base officials shared with the media. Eastwood also said, “It was nice then, and it’s nice now.”

Eastwood’s latest film, Richard Jewell, is based on the real-life drama of a security guard who was falsely accused of planting a bomb at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Paul Walter Hauser plays the titu-

What Rising Seas Mean for Dana Point and Other Stakeholders

ithout appropriate planning, proactive policies and preparation, sea level rise in Dana Point could mean beach loss, flooding and damage to coastal developments, according to a recent City of Dana Point study.

Studies, such as the latest Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment (SLRVA), are the beginning stages to developing science and initiating preparation, says John Ciampa, the city’s senior planner.

The City of Dana Point held a public workshop to present the findings of its SLRVA on Dec. 4, which explored a variety of different scenarios and projections. The private coastal engineering firm Moffat & Nichol helped conduct the workshop alongside Ciampa and the firm Dudek.

The workshop came within a week of the state Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO) urging for SLR preparation.

“California’s coast could experience SLR ranging from about half of 1 foot by 2030 up to about 7 feet by 2100,” the LAO report states. “Periodic events like storms and high tides will produce even higher water levels and increase the risk of flooding.

Rising seas will also erode coastal cliffs, dunes, and beaches, which will affect shorefront structures and recreation.”

The LAO is a non-partisan governmental agency that provides policy guidance to the state Legislature.

The LAO report asserts that most development along the coast is owned by either private entities or local governments and that most policies and decisions are made by local governments. Dana Point coast, however, is mostly owned by state, county and private entities.

“The next step is making stakeholders aware and helping everyone understand there’s a need,” Ciampa said, in reference to agencies working together. “The next phase will address potential impacts. Agencies will need to follow science and update assessments accordingly. Policies will need to be flexible in order to effectively address sea level rise.”

Earlier this year, in a California Coastal Commission (CCC) meeting, Mary Matella, a CCC environmental scientist, gave a presentation on how sea level rise impacts Orange County and what coastal cities are doing about it.

efforts will be critical for ensuring that coastal communities can be resilient to sea level rising in the coming years, Matella said. The CCC’s Local Coastal Program (LCP) is a planning tool used by local governments to guide development in partnership with the CCC. LCP’s contain the ground rules for future development and protection of coastal resources in the 76 coastal cities and counties.

The LCP grant program is in its sixth year and offers funding for cities to assess vulnerable coastal areas that could be threatened by sea level rise and provides the opportunity for each city to update its LCP. The study is meant to identify areas of the coastal region that are vulnerable to hazards while considering policies and programs to mitigate such threats.

The CCC and partnering cities use the program CoSMoS 3.0 to assess where a community is most at risk. The software looks at built assets such as houses, roadways and highways, as well as natural assets, including beaches. The modeling tool was developed by the US Geological Survey.

“The California Coastal Commission wants us to look at multiple scenarios so that we can be aware and prepared for potential impacts,” Ciampa said.

For the 2050 time horizon, the “likely” range of SLR is between 0.7-1.2 feet, which

means there is a 66% probability that SLR will fall within this range. Under a worstcase extreme SLR scenario, 2.8 feet could occur by 2050. At 2100, the likely range of SLR is 1.6-3.6 feet, with a worst-case projection of 10.2 feet, the report states.

“The wide range of projections at the end of the century illustrate the need for adaptation planning when evaluating projects with life expectancies of 75-100 years,” the report says.

The city’s SLRVA determined that there is a 66% probability that sea levels will rise from 1.6-3.6 feet by 2050.

The SLRVA divvied up Dana Point’s coast into three sections: North Dana Point, Central Dana Point (Dana Point Harbor) and South Dana Point. The study explored the potential impacts of a 3.3-foot rise in sea level to each of these sections.

For North Dana Point, there would be minimal sandy beach present at Dana Strand, potential wave damage to the coastal access trail along Salt Creek Beach, storm-related flooding of Monarch Bay Club and increased cliff erosion.

There would be flooding throughout low-lying areas of Dana Point Harbor, minimal beach area in the harbor and further wave transmission through breakwaters.

The harbor is undergoing a revitalization to bring upgrades and new development to the area. Joe Ueberroth, of

Bellwether Financial Group, is working to restructure the marina aspect of the harbor, in conjunction with Dana Point Harbor Partners. He says the partners are mindful of the numerous contributing factors that will impact design of the revitalization.

“Bellwether Financial Group and The Marina at Dana Point are taking into account potential sea level rise,” Ueberroth said. “Combining our latest technology with rigorous planning and testing, Dana Point Harbor’s docks will stand the test of sea level rise, and time.”

As for South Dana Point, which includes private residences on Beach Road in Capistrano Beach, the report anticipates chronic beach erosion and minimal beach area. Southern Doheny State Beach parking, residential beachfront development and Capistrano Beach Park will be exposed to wave action daily.

Capistrano Beach Park has already seen the impacts of wave exposure.

Inclement weather and high tides in 2018 led to damage and demolition of its basketball court and restroom structure.

The 189 homes on Beach Road, in a community known as Capistrano Bay District, sit on the beach, adjacent to county-owned Capistrano Beach. Beach Road properties are seeing the impacts danapointtimes.com

EYE ON DP of coastal erosion, Capistrano Bay District Manager Donal Russell said in a previous interview.

“What we see is long-term loss of beach from wave action in the summertime. It’s a different angle that cuts into the sand on the beach, causing shoreline erosion,” Russell said. “I suppose, decades from now, we could see sea level rise impacts, but right now we’re seeing soft swells have more energy as a result of climate change.”

A portion of the homes on Beach Road are deemed legal nonconforming.

“The best way to make properties resilient to the potential impacts of sea level rise would be for properties to conform to Dana Point’s building and zoning codes,” Ciampa said.

Modifications that yield more than a 10% change to the structure are required to meet Dana Point building and zoning code, which often means the entire building would need to be modified.

According to the LOA report, rising sea levels pose a serious and costly threat. Between $8-10 billion of existing property will by underwater by 2050 and $6-10 billion will be at risk at high tide.

But for every dollar spent preparing in advance of disasters, $6 in post-disaster losses are avoided.

progress of SLR preparation across the state’s coastal communities has been slow.

“Few coastal communities have yet begun implementing projects to respond to the threat of rising seas,” the LOA report states. “Coastal communities must increase both the extent and pace of SLR preparation efforts if California is to avoid the most severe, costly, and disruptive impacts in the coming decades.”

Planning ahead means adaptation

actions can be strategic and phased and reportedly helps buy time before more extreme responses are needed. Preparation provides opportunities to test approaches and learn what works best, and may make overall adaptation efforts more affordable and improve their odds for success, LOA says.

The next decade could be a crucial time period for taking action to prepare for SLR. On a state level, Governor Gavin Newsom, as well as members of

the Legislature, have indicated interest in placing a bond on the 2020 ballot to provide further funding for climate adaptation initiatives. The next step for the city will be to complete the second phase of assessment.

Ciampa says that phase includes developing policies and involving stakeholders. The city will continue working with Moffatt & Nichol, which CCC funding will help provide for.

“Cities will likely need to be doing updates as the science improves,” Ciampa said. “Once we have better technology and better projections, we’ll have a better idea of what solutions we’ll need to work toward. And the science is only getting better as time goes on.”

The CCC wants cities to look at multiple scenarios so that there is awareness and preparation for potential impacts, he added. Coastal engineers will need to identify where sand can be placed in a location where it is most likely to remain. Not losing the sand to one storm is key, Ciampa said.

“As issues grow in terms of erosion, the next step is making stakeholders aware and helping everyone understand there’s a need,” Ciampa said.

I am writing in response to the false allegations that Shevy Akason made in the last Dana Point Times issue. Usually, I do not respond to people’s misinformation. But I have seen this type of nonsense escalate, until I was forced to file a defamation lawsuit this year against the Dana Point Taxpayers Association, who, as a judge recently ruled, appears guilty of maliciously maligning my reputation by knowingly sending out libelous mailers during the 2018 election.

Mr. Akason falsely claims that I paid to get rid of a good short-term rental ordinance because I “develop hotels,” and this “helped further other interests” I have in the City of Dana Point. Neither of these allegations are true. For the record, I have never developed a hotel (nor do I plan to), and I sold the hotel site on the Strand at Headlands project years ago to a hotel developer from Michigan.

My involvement in overturning the Short-Term Rental ordinance stemmed solely from the fact that the city ordinance gave approval rights that currently do not exist to the California Coastal Commission. Period. That was the only reason I was involved. I assume Mr. Akason made a simple mistake by publicly questioning my motives, and I do not believe he did so maliciously, but had he taken the time to call my office, I would have personally explained these facts to him.

Instead of titling his letter “What I’ve Learned about Dana Point Politics,” Mr. Akason’s piece might have more properly been called “What I Don’t Know about Dana Point Politics.”

KUDOS TO THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB SALLY REINHOLDT, San Clemente

Terry Hughes and his dedicated staff at the Boys and Girls Club did an amazing job hosting a Pickleball Tournament fundraiser on Saturday, Dec 7.

In spite of the rain, at least 60 local citizens, beginner to advanced skill level and young to old, participated in this very organized and lively event.

Tournaments of this quality don’t happen without a lot of planning and hard work. So, thank you!

SOUTH COUNTY TRAFFIC RELIEF EFFORT LESLIE A. BOULLON, San Clemente

Last week, I attended the South County Traffic Relief meeting ostensibly held to solicit public input. I am in favor of the no-build alternative, as the majority of the alternatives put forth by the community during the Get Moving forums held several years ago (and later printed up in big, glossy, colorful handouts) have been disregarded.

When I asked one of the Transportation Corridor Agencies’ “technical experts” why they were left out, he said he had never heard of them. Another “technical expert” said they weren’t part of the TCA’s purview.

And when I questioned a TCA representative working the room, she waved her hands dismissively in the air and replied, “The public had all kinds of crazy ideas.”

So much for the value of input from community stakeholders.

I have zero confidence in the TCA to act in any manner that is not self-serving and does not advance its predetermined zealot-like mission. Witness its partnership with Rancho Mission Viejo to build Los Patrones Parkway to Cow Camp Road, where it is now poised and ready to pounce on us.

tation and Orange County Transportation Authority need to take back the reins from the TCA and focus on improving mobility on arterial streets. The continual widening and building of more freeways/toll roads is a 20th-century solution to a 21st-century problem.

As we all know, the Army Corps of Engineers is now engaged in decommissioning dams it spent the last century building.

Looking at it another way, it’s the business of staying in business.

I conclude on a cautionary note. For 60 years, through grassroots activism, residents of South Pasadena successfully defended their city against completion of the 710 corridor. We have equal drive and passion to prevail against any entity that threatens our homes, our businesses, our open spaces, our city.

At the Movies: ‘Dark Waters’ Might Be Dark Horse This Season

F

ilm director Todd Haynes’ Dark Waters is one of those movies you go in expecting to upset you, though hoping it has a satisfying outcome in the end.

Unfortunately, this isn’t entirely the case.

Based on the shockingly real allegations from the past 60 years, the film centers on Ohio attorney Robert Bilott (Mark Ruffalo) after he gets an unexpected visit at work from local West Virginia farmer Wilbur Tennant (Bill Camp) in 1998.

Wilbur strongly believes, and has possible proof, that the country’s biggest chemical company, DuPont, is willfully dumping a fatal, manmade chemical into the public water, one that is also used in coating cookware and appliances. Bilott then makes it his mission for the next 20 years to fight and stop DuPont, seeking justice for the 3,500 West Virginia plaintiffs who have contracted cancer or birth defects as a result of the Teflon® chemical called PFOA. Unlike a lot of “true story” movies that have a definite conclusion, the story of

Putting this depressing element aside for a moment, Dark Waters as a film is rather good. Ruffalo’s casting and performance are fitting and carry the film all the way through.

Anne Hathaway appears as basically the “concerned wife” cliché, but she does it very well—and enough for me to think she could deserve some awards-nomination hype.

Haynes effectively sets a dramatic tone and atmosphere, but it doesn’t come across as preachy or over-the-top in their narrative.

There are a couple of moments of comic relief that don’t particularly land, but beyond that, Dark Waters might be the dark horse of this movie season. DP

t is clearly agreed upon across the world, both scientifically and anecdotally, that the Mediterranean diet is among the most healthful food patterns.

While one might assume it is simply the wholesome food components that promote longevity in this region, it really is the complete lifestyle driving both health and happiness. This is where we can’t deny how conviviality fits into our fast-paced, hectic lives or, dare I say, lack thereof.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the definition for “conviviality” is relating to, occupied with, or fond of feasting, drinking, and good company.

When was the last time you took joy in planning and preparing a meal for your family? And when it came time to eat that meal, did you and your people sit down together, distractions silenced, to enjoy that meal and the GET FIT fellowship that naturally DANA POINT

The deliberate use of scare tactics with a doomsday mentality regarding toxic exposures, use of questionable (non-scientific) methods to eliminate them from our bodies, and the overuse of tests, supplements and procedures to prevent/fix these issues make my blood boil.

Add in the fact that the cost for these pills, potions, fads, and such are often

prohibitive to the general public. No better is traditional medicine and its top-down approach of prescribing medications to cover the symptoms of the very diseases that are killing us.

These traditional health care professionals went into medicine with the goal of helping, and doing no harm, but limitations with the system are preventing the care you deserve.

All of that being said, food is life, and food should be the first line of defense against all that potentially ails us, but too many people live to eat instead of eating to live.

The experience of enjoying your food— conviviality—is potentially the missing antidote to the obesity epidemic, which can be due to time constraints, lack of nutritional knowledge and the inability to plan, prepare and cook meals.

A FEW TIPS TO INITIATE CONVIVIALITY INTO YOUR HOLIDAY PARTY: Whether you have a formal sit-down meal or serve buffet-style, consider taking a moment with the group to say a prayer or thought in thanksgiving for having the ability to spend time together.

While it is not always possible to have everyone sit at the same table, do provide seating areas where groups can congregate to share their food and conversation.

Consider asking everyone to stack their phones face down—after they take pictures of their plates, of course—so that no one is tempted to use them during the meal.

While holidays bring much joy, there is also concern for relationships that have gone awry and what those interactions

might look like. This does not mean that you have to avoid those encounters entirely. There are many ways to inspire dialogue in small increments.

Choose to sit with family or friends you don’t see on a regular basis during the meal. This time can be short-lived if you choose, so if things are uncomfortable, you can easily excuse yourself to get seconds or clear your plate from the table.

Bring a plate of appetizers or desserts to share with an individual or small group, and lead the conversation with something positive happening in your life, then genuinely inquiring into theirs.

In all cases, instilling a little conviviality

into this holiday season might just revive lost relationships and build new ones, all while role-modeling healthy behaviors for those you love.

Boys Cross Country Finishes 8th at Nationals The Dana Hills boys cross country finished its season as one of the nation’s best at the Nike Cross Nationals on Dec. 7 in Portland, Oregon.

Senior Carrick Denker led the way for Dana Hills in the top 50 of the 5,000-meter race with a time of 15:45 to finish in 43rd place, and the Dolphins edged their way inside the top 10 with 247 team points to finish in eighth place.

Junior Brandon Pizano ran a time of 16:07 to finish 81st, and sophomore Jai Dawson finished in 91st at 16:13. Senior Omar Garcia ran a 16:30 to finish in 119th, and junior Ryan Broadhead finished in 126th at 16:34.

The race featured 203 runners and 22 teams.

Dana Wharf Fish Report

Sheephead, rockfish highlight winter catches

eather limited the number of boats that went out last week, but the fishing is still good at Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said the catches have been more of the same, with the rockfish and others along the bottom being the main targets.

The three-quarter-day trips have been focusing almost exclusively on the rockfish. Many anglers on the trips have hit their 10-fish limits, with sardines as the best bait. Woolley also said the deep-water jigs did well, with good sinkers working well against the stronger current.

In both competitions, the Dolphins were beat out by Newbury Park, which went on to also capture the national championship. Newbury Park’s Nico Young swept the individual titles in the CIF-SS, state championship and the national championship with a clocking of 14:52, the only sub15-minute time in the race.

Boys Basketball Continues Hot Start The Dana Hills boys basketball team has taken strongly to the tournament season.

After an unbeaten run in the Santa Ana/Garden Grove Four Cities Classic to open the season, the Dolphins (9-1) continued their hot start through the Godinez Grizzly Invitational.

Dana Hills dropped their first game of the tournament to Foothill, 41-34, for their only loss of the season, but the Dolphins came back in a strong way in the consolation bracket. Dana Hills dominated Savanna, 71-40, and Loara, 62-22. The Dolphins then scored wins over Long Beach Wilson, 43-32, and Northwood, 51-42.

With its 9-1 record, Dana Hills is more than halfway to last season’s win total (17) well before the winter break.

The Dolphins are next in action in the North-South Challenge against Los Alamitos at Tesoro High School on Dec. 21. Los

The top 25 at the end of the competition on March 31 will compete in a free fish-off for an additional prize.

Throughout December, kids fish free at Dana Wharf with a paid adult ticket on the half- and three-quarterday trips.

Local surfer Andino in the hunt for the 2019 WSL World Title

K

olohe Andino will need the best result of his life at the Billabong Pipeline Masters if he is to win the 2019 WSL World Title.

There are currently five contenders for the title, and depending on what happens, Andino—who’s affectionately known around town simply as “Brother”—needs to either finish first or second at the Pipeline in Oahu to accomplish the lifelong goal.

Though Andino was the first American surfer to secure his spot on the 2020 U.S. Olympic team, he is still driven by world title aspirations. Growing up watching champs including Kelly Slater, Andy Irons and Mick Fanning, Andino has worked long and hard to arrive at this level.

“I’d say, for me, a world title is a lot more important than a gold medal,” Andino recently told surf publication Stab Magazine.

“It would be rad to win one for my country, but a world title means you’re the best surfer around the world in all conditions all year.”

The son of former U.S. Champion Dino Andino, the junior Andino shows the fruit does not fall far from the tree.

“He’s better than I could have ever dreamt of being,” the senior Andino explained when his son joined the tour in 2012. “But I always tell him, it doesn’t matter how good you are on a surfboard, it’s what kind of person are you.”

Andino’s lived by that advice, growing into an outstanding role model for up-andcoming surfers in San Clemente. His 2019

campaign has been the most successful of his career, defined by disciplined consistency. He started the season off with a runner-up finish at the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast of Australia. He picked up another second-place finish at the Margaret River Pro in Western Australia.

Semifinal appearances in Brazil and South Africa kept him in the mix, and by the time the tour got to Tahiti in August, he was ranked No. 1 in the world. He made the quarters in two European events and is currently ranked No. 5 in the world.

Interestingly, most roads to the title lead through San Clemente. Three of the five title contenders have addresses in town: Andino, Jordy Smith and Filipe Toledo. Another contender, current world No. 1, Italo Ferreira, also has strong ties to the area, designing his boards with local shaper Timmy Patterson

and spending an abundant amount of time in the area testing equipment and training.

“Italo’s put the work in, and look where he’s at. It seems like he surfs a lot,” said Andino. “I would like to think we live in a world where people who work the hardest succeed the most. It seems like it makes sense.”

All of those surfers could also appear in the Olympics in 2020, as well. As noted, Andino’s already locked in, as is Smith.

The two spots for the Brazilian team won’t be decided until the end of the season, based on their current WSL ratings.

As this story goes to press, there’s a sizable swell on tap for Pipeline, and it’s probable that a portion of the Pipe Masters will have run. A series of large northwest swells are stacking up for Hawaii, and Thursday, Dec. 12, could be especially menacing with Surfline.com calling for

potential 18- to 25-foot “maxing” pipe.

This is one of the closest world title races in years, and it’s going to wrap up in heavy surf, just the way it should. The waiting period does not end until Dec. 20, but they may not need that long based on what the Pacific’s doing.

The swell is so big that the WSL is also looking at running their big-wave contest, the Jaws Big Wave Championships, on Thursday, as well. Forecast models are putting the surf in the epic category.

“Surf size is expected to be in the 35-45’ range on the face through the morning hours, with the bigger sets to 50’ (20-25’ Hawaiian on sets),” reads a WSL Instagram post.

It’s going to be a big week of surfing in Hawaii, and an even bigger week in San Clemente if Andino can win the world title.

The contest, which took place on Nov. 23-24, is an annual charity event that benefits Surfers Healing, a group that helps autistic kids around the country enjoy the healing and therapeutic powers of surfing.

Obviously, he is well-accomplished when it comes to above-the-lip surfing. You can usually find him ripping apart peaks at Church, where the goofy-footer revels in the uncrowded, against-the-grain lefts.

“The challenge to always improve and the opportunity to get out and try something new is huge,” Bengelsdorf said about what inspires him to surf. “Try to get better every day. Plus, being in the ocean every day is so peaceful.”

As far as where he’d like surfing to taking him, he’s not short on lofty aspirations.

“In the next 10 years, I hope surfing leads me around the world and eventually to a world title,” Bengelsdorf explained.

Taking things one air at a time, he may be there sooner than he thinks. DP
