Five things Dana Point should know this week Fatal Motorcycle Collision in Dana Point THE LATEST: A motorcyclist was killed in a solo collision in Dana Point on Saturday, Feb. 15.

Orange County Sheriff’s deputies with Dana Point Police Services responded at 8:09 p.m. to reports of a man who was bleeding near the intersection of Selva Road and Calle La Primavera.

“Upon OCSD and (Orange County Fire Authority) arrival, they found the victim with major trauma,” said Carrie Braun, OCSD director of Public Affairs. “OCFA paramedics pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.”

Deputies realized the scene was a solo motorcycle collision and contained the scene. A SigAlert was issued as the OCSD Major Accident Reconstruction Team responded, then lifted at midnight.

Judge Denies City’s and HOA’s Motion in TCA Lawsuit THE LATEST: A judge in Riverside County last month denied the city of San Clemente and a homeowners association’s motion to stop the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) from considering alternative routes to extend the 241 Toll Road after the initial plan to build the extension south of San Clemente was officially blocked in 2016.

The TCA, according to the Jan. 28 ruling, “may elect not to proceed with the extension, may select an alternative to the extension, and may condition the construction and operation of the extension in whatever manner that is consistent with the law.”

According to City Attorney Scott Smith, the court only denied the city and The Reserve Maintenance Corporation’s joint motion for preliminary judgment on certain elements of their lawsuit, which challenges a 2016 settlement agreement between the TCA and various environmental groups.

“There’s no ultimate outcome on the case, per se,” Smith explained during the San Clemente City Council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 18. “Those are just pre-trial Dana Point Times February 21-27, 2020

motions where the court was just asked to decide as a matter of law in our favor and the court declined to do that, leaving the issues open for argument, as the court (hearing) is set for next month.”

In an emailed statement from the TCA, the agencies said they were pleased with “the court’s ruling on these key issues and look forward to completely resolving this litigation going forward.”

Under the 2016 settlement agreement, the TCA agreed not to build a 241 Toll Road extension through the San Mateo Watershed and Trestles. As a result of that agreement, the TCA and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) began examining a variety of proposals for the 241 to connect to Interstate 5. Some of those proposals, which are in the process of being narrowed, would cut through San Clemente.

The city and The Reserve had filed separate lawsuits against the TCA in August 2017, challenging the settlement and alleging the agreement was made without an environmental review or public input.

Council Hears Presentation on Long-Term Financial Plan Update THE LATEST: Dana Point City Council met on Tuesday, Feb. 18 and heard a presentation on the city’s long-term financial plan (LTFP).

The city’s first published LTFP was in the fiscal year 2016 and fiscal year 2017 budget. In 2018, the city council adopted new financial policies addressing its LTFP, and council directed that the LTFP be updated annually. The most recent update was prepared in spring 2019, prior to the adoption of the current budget.

Long-term financial planning includes projecting revenues and expenditures out at least

five years and must incorporate implementation of strategic plan goals. Projections made

by Assistant City Manager Mike Killebrew went an additional year, out to FY 2027.

The city is heavily dependent on the transient occupancy tax (TOT), as it makes up about 30% of the budget.

“TOT is always a risk. If there are delays in the new hotels, that will have an impact,” Killebrew said. “We will keep that in our planning and make sure we continually discuss where those hotel projects are in coming to fruition.”

The city anticipates partial revenue to come from the Wave Hotel in FY 2023, Headlands Hotel in FY 2024 and the new hotel in the Dana Point Harbor in FY 2025.

Killebrew added that short-term rentals contribute roughly $750,000 to the annual budget.

“I know there’s been a lot of discussion on (short-term rentals); there’s a council committee working on this,” Killebrew said. “I just want people to know what we’re dealing with.”

As far as future expenses, Killebrew anticipated growth in the Orange County Sheriff’s Department contract, as well as salaries and wage growth.

WHAT’S NEXT: No vote was needed following the presentation, and council received and filed the agenda item. There will be a mid-year financial report provided on March 3, a formal draft update to the LongTerm Financial Plan on May 5 and updates to the FY 2021 budget on June 2.—LB

Show Will Go on for Tijuana Dogs at StillWater THE LATEST: After canceling a scheduled show in light of a tragic and fatal helicopter accident, the Tijuana Dogs will be playing at StillWater Spirits & Sounds, after all.

The high-energy, rock band will be playing on Friday, Feb. 28, at 9 p.m., alongside Carol Hatchett and Jason Toney. The band’s frontman, Matt Mauser, will not be present.

Mauser lost his wife, Christina Mauser, in a helicopter accident on Jan. 26 that also claimed the lives of NBA great Kobe Bryant and seven others.

“Christina was a driving force behind the Tijuana Dogs, and can be credited with much of their success,” a Tijuana Dogs statement says. “…The Tijuana Dogs and their families appreciate all the love and support that has been pouring in. Thank you.”

Mauser, 38, was Bryant’s top assistant coach on the Mambas youth girls basketball team. She was among the group in the helicopter that was en route to a game when it crashed in Calabasas. She also was a former basketball coach and teacher at Harbor Day School in Corona del Mar. WHAT’S NEXT: There will be a moment of silence held to honor Mauser before the band’s performance. StillWater Manager Mike Brooks says he anticipates a full house. This show will be for those who are 21 and older.

Dana Point Carves Itself Out as Destination with AAA Recognition THE LATEST: Two hotels in Dana Point earned the American Automobile Association’s (AAA) prestigious Five Diamond rating for 2019.

Each year, AAA announces all hotels and restaurants across the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean receiving Four or Five Diamond status during the previous year. The AAA released its list of a total of 119 hotels on Wednesday, Feb. 28, after rigorous evaluation, anonymous overnight stays and review from a panel of experts.

In Dana Point, the Monarch Beach Resort and The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel were included in the Five Diamond list.

The two hotels make up just 0.4% of the 27,000 hotels evaluated in 2019.

Blue Lantern Inn and Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa were named in the Four Diamond list, which is just 6.5% of the 27,000 hotels evaluated.

The state with the most Five Diamond hotels is California, with 17 Five Diamond hotels. The state also has 12 Five Diamond restaurants. Raya (The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel) in Dana Point was named in the Four Diamond restaurant list.

For more than 80 years, AAA’s professional inspectors have conducted in-person property evaluations.

Festival of Whales Parade Will Be Held in Dana Point Harbor City of Dana Point has announced that the Festival of Whales Parade will be moving to Dana Point Harbor this year.

The parade will be held on Saturday, March 7 at 10 a.m., and it will begin at Dana Drive and Island Way. Parade participants will proceed north on Island Way over the bridge to Dana Point Harbor Drive, travel toward Golden Lantern, turning right.

“I am so excited to finally see the parade come to the harbor,” said Don Hansen, founder of the Festival of Whales. “It took almost 50 years, but I'm thrilled to see that the new Harbor Partners have paved the way to bring this historic parade to the harbor. It just makes sense, and it’s what the event needed.”

The incident resulted in Schenkenberger sustaining severe injuries to his brain. He underwent emergency surgery that night in which a piece of his skull was removed to relieve pressure. Schenkenberger has required 24/7 care and has had to undergo multiple surgeries since then. He is now unable to walk or speak, using blinking to communicate “yes” or “no” responses.

There will be a $20 cover charge at OC Tavern, and 100% of the funds raised will go to the Schenkenberger family. There will also be dinner, drinks and live music by the James Kelly Band. Attendees can enjoy clothing and jewelry vendors, line dancing and raffle prizes.

The Measure H Bond will have severe impacts on property owners and residents.

Property valued at $1 million will start at $340, but because of the annual 2% compounded increases in assessment values, that number grows to $406 by year 10, $495 by year 20 and eventually reaching $604.

That owner can expect to pay a total of $13,793 during the bond’s life. Those numbers could be significantly greater if the property is reassessed due to a kitchen or bathroom remodel or room or deck addition.

This constantly increasing tax will be a plague on owners for decades and will have the same negative impact as a massive citywide Mello-Roos tax. Property sales and values will be harmed as buyers assess the impact of this onerous tax on property purchases.

Commercial and rental owners with more valuable properties would pay significant taxes. A $3 million property would start at $1,020 and rise to $1,346 by year 15 and eventually increase to $1,811.

Those owners constantly make improvements to their properties, so they will face repeated reassessments and be forced to pay even higher taxes.

Those kinds of costs will not be ignored.

Owners will be forced to pass those costs along to their customers and tenants through higher product and service prices and rents. Residents of San Clemente will be hit twice by this tax—on their own property tax bill and again through higher prices for goods, services and rents.

The Capistrano Unified School District claim that bond money will only be used for San Clemente building improvements is a deceptively misleading statement.

While bond money may be used for building maintenance and improvements, passage of the bond will allow CUSD to reallocate current and future funding already in its budgets that would otherwise have been used on San Clemente schools for maintenance and improvements.

Thus, the bond could free up maintenance money in current budgets for salaries, pensions and benefits. Freed-up funds could also be used on maintenance and improvements on schools in other CUSD cities.

San Clemente taxpayers would unknowingly pay to renovate schools in other cities and pay for higher salaries and benefits for CUSD employees. The bond funds would allow CUSD to play a budgetary shell game with current budgets. This deceptive ruse and backdoor approach to freeing up mon-

I urge voters to reject Measure H, which creates a new property tax to fund the refurbishment and modernization of San Clemente and Capo Beach schools. I’m sure these schools need the work proposed.

I also understand the importance of good schools for our children and home values; yet carve-out taxes of this nature serve as a bailout of the district for past mismanagement of our existing income and local property taxes.

When did proper repair, maintenance and modernization get pushed out of the budget?

This measure would allow the diversion of even more existing budget resources for teacher and administrative costs. It’s time our school officials genuinely put our students first.

My husband and I have lived in San Clemente for more than 30 years. We wholeheartedly support Measure H— which most of San Clemente, as well as Capistrano Beach residents, will vote on for the March primary election.

I am a retired educator who had a long career in Capistrano Unified School District, starting as a teacher. I also served as a middle school principal, high school principal, and deputy superintendent of education in Capistrano Unified and was later hired as the superintendent of Laguna Beach Unified School District.

Public education is an investment in our students, our communities, our state, and our nation. Great schools are an integral part of great communities, and San Clemente schools reflect our community.

We need Measure H to ensure our children have the same high-quality learning environment as children in other communities, including upgraded classrooms, science labs, and technology.

Join me in voting for Measure H. Our kids deserve it.

COUNTRY B4 PARTY GREG POWERS, San Clemente

While driving on Interstate 5 in San Clemente, I saw this banner hanging: “Country B4 Party.” The sign underscored our shortsighted political process. Rising above Party, I envision a new five-point path forward to distribute tax dollars in a more purposeful way to lead our nation for generations.

• Bring our troops home: The U.S. has 50,000 troops deployed in the Middle East and other countries. Technology has

advanced to allow the U.S. to protect its borders by building a defensive military bubble around our country. We can project power from the sea, air, space, and cyberworld. We no longer need boots on foreign ground.

• Be the world’s best trading partner: Every country wants a growing economy.

Global commerce can be the best antidote to war. Empower our allies with economic incentives, training and access to capital.

Young people in foreign countries are often drawn to join ISIS or a drug cartel because they have no alternative. Small businesses and jobs do as much for the economy as they do for self-esteem.

• Become energy-independent: Eventually, we will run out of oil. Alternative power such as solar and wind are inevitable. JFK declared we will put a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s, so we must set a target to transition to renewable sources.

I propose 2050. This requires transformation in our infrastructure, technology, and consumer behavior. Benefits favor climate change, air quality, and detachment from oil-rich nations.

• Solve our social challenges: Our population is large, and we have a responsibility to provide a safety net. Conscious capitalism is more the norm today: fiscally conservative and socially responsible. With the money we save bringing our troops home, repurpose the dollars into solving domestic ills, such as homelessness and drug trafficking.

• Give 10 cities a mission: Reagan promoted the Shining City on a Hill. We have underutilized capabilities in our smaller cities that struggle, as people and jobs move out. I propose repurposing our federal and state budgets to invest in 10 cities and giving them a 20-year mission. Detroit could be the capital of autonomous driving, Tulsa the hub for wind energy, Sacramento the base for A.I., San Antonio for infrastructure, and Minneapolis for cancer treatment. Instead of welfare, those in need can be given training and jobs in “new sanctuary cities.”

Government investment, state tax incentives, and work-force development will open community colleges, attract corporations, and build neighborhoods.

This overarching plan belongs to no political party, but rather repurposes spending to be intentional for the betterment of our country with a 50-year view.

insley Ellis has brought his rocking style of blues music to The Coach House in the past, and when he takes the stage once more on Sunday, March 8, he expects the night to be another fun one because Jimmie Vaughan is also performing.

“It’s a comfortable place to perform,” Ellis said. “Us and Jimmie Vaughan, that’s a home run.”

Ellis’ most recent album is Ice Cream in Hell. The unique title comes from playing around the common expression of people in hell wanting ice water and related sayings. Ellis also felt strongly enough about the title track—the last song to be added on the album—to make the phrase front and center.

“The goal was to make a real guitarcentric and rocking album,” Ellis said.

That description is true—the songs “Last One to Know” and “Don’t Know Beans” are lively enough to make the listener start dancing. Ellis talks about B.B. King and Muddy Waters when discussing the blues, influences clearly heard in his music.

Ellis saw B.B. King when he was a teenager and later toured with the

legendary bluesman, whom he called “very gracious.” Ellis got into the blues through the British Invasion music that was on the radio in the 1960s, a style itself influenced by blues.

From there, Ellis listened to Cream and then the blues itself.

“That let me know where it was all coming from,” Ellis said.

Ellis said The Coach House treats performing musicians very well, and though he agreed The Coach House can be intimate as other musicians have noted, Ellis has played smaller spaces such as jazz clubs. He was born in Atlanta and grew up in southern Florida.

Ellis enters a comfort zone when he steps on stage, and during the March 8 performance, the songs will be a mix of new material from Ice Cream in Hell and his older songs. Ellis is curious to see who will be in the audience, and what they’re looking to hear.

“We have a lot of friends there at the venue and in the audience,” Ellis said.

“We’re looking to make it a party.”

The March 8 concert at The Coach House is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Lying About One’s Age on a Senior Dating Profile

T

his month, Arlene, a South Orange County resident who’s in her mid60s, shared a story about a man who contacted her on a senior dating website.

His profile stated he was 71, just a few years older than she.

Arlene emailed, “A guy wrote that he’d like to meet me at Starbucks. The location was near where I live, so I agreed.

“His photo looked OK. He lives about 20 miles from me. I was sitting outside waiting for him, even though it was a bit chilly.

When he walked up, he seemed much older than his photo.

“He had seen a picture in my online profile of me on a cruise. He asked if I liked to cruise, to ON LIFE AND which I replied: ‘Yes, it’s LOVE AFTER 50 my favorite thing to do.’

By Tom Blake “He told me he’d been in the Navy and on many ships. I asked if it was during the Vietnam War; he told me it was during the Korean War. Since I’m a Baby Boomer, guys in my age group were in the Vietnam War, NOT the Korean War. “I reminded him that his profile stated he was 71. He told me he’d ‘fudged’ his age a bit; he was 81! I let him ramble on

for an hour about himself, then told him I had many errands and had to leave.

“He had the nerve to contact me online again the next day. I told him we were not a match and that 81 was NOT 71!

“These guys never stop trying.”

I wondered why he lied to Arlene. I pondered what he may have thought; I’m only guessing, but perhaps it was something along this line.

He saw her profile on the senior dating website. Her picture appealed to him; he found her attractive. She lived close enough to him that dating her would be convenient.

He thought her interests and hobbies meshed with his. After all, he had been in the Navy onboard ships, and he noticed from her profile picture that she was on a cruise ship.

Perhaps she had the characteristics he sought in a mate. From her profile, it appeared to him that they could be a good match.

There was just one problem, of which he was oh, so aware—probably because he had experienced it previously, more than once—he was too old for her.

If he listed his true age, he wouldn’t get a date with Arlene, because she was more than 10 years younger.

Maybe he was convinced if he could just get to meet Arlene face-to-face, she might think he was so wonderful that their 10-to17-year age difference (whichever it was), wouldn’t matter. He may have thought he was being creative and didn’t think he was kidding himself.

To improve his chances of getting a date with Arlene, he simply shaved 10 (or more) years off his true age, on his profile.

Technically, he was lying. But he believed it was just a little white lie. Besides, he promised himself that he’d reveal his true age when they met, after, of course, he’d had a chance to show her what a potentially great catch he’d be. Is lying to get one’s foot in the door wrong?

Perhaps he knew from previous experiences that the only way to get first dates with younger women was to lie on his profile.

Again, I can’t say if this is how his thinking went, or if any of my speculation is true, but, I imagine, some of it is.

Christine Baumgartner, an Orange County dating and relationship coach, once told me, “When I work with my clients, I always insist they tell the truth about themselves, including their age. It’s very important not to lie.”

Some senior singles say, if people lie about their age, anything they say might be suspect.

I responded to Arlene: “He may have even been fudging a bit more. The Korean

War was from 1950 to 1953. If he was, let’s say, 17, in 1950, that would make him approximately 87 now. If he was 17 in 1953, he’d be about 84 now. If he was older than 17 during the Korean War, he could be in his late 80s now.”

Lying about one’s age isn’t recommended; the truth will emerge sooner or later.

imento is a 3-year-old cutie who is learning how to trust again. When he first arrived at the shelter, Pimento was very shy and scared. With the care of staff and volunteers, he is finally coming out of his shell. While he can still be a bit wary of strangers, he is extremely loving and affectionate once he gets to know you. Cetaceans Inspire Imagination Local students look to the ocean to guide their inspiration for art, science and beyond

ura Gonzales has always lived near the ocean, growing up to admire how it impacts our daily lives and how our daily lives impact the ocean.

“I want to be a marine biologist,” Gonzales said. “Being so close to the water has given me a unique appreciation for the ocean.”

High School. She’s already applied to several colleges noted for their marine biology programs. Experiences such as going out at sea on the Dana Pride only affirm her belief she is on the right path.

Each year, students from DHHS fine arts classes set sail out of the Dana Point Harbor.

The goal is for the students to channel their experience out on the water into their creative projects, which will be displayed and sold during the annual Festival of Whales celebration. Dana Wharf Whale Watching donates a whale watching trip each year to take a group of art and science students from Dana Hills on the trip.

“We just taught about marine mammals, so this trip has been perfect timing,” Hudson said. “We talked about plankton, whales and all mammals in between.”

During the field trip, the students were able to see a gray whale breach several times. Each time the gray whale was sighted, the captain repositioned the Dana Pride to safely follow the whale. Students had their smart phones and DSLR cameras at the ready, aiming to capture the breach.

“It’s so important that young kids get a

chance to see these kinds of creatures out in the wild,” Hudson said. “Now that we’ve had a chance to see whales breaching, the students have that experience, that connection, and they can relate on a more personable level when we go back to the classroom.

Whales are directly impacted by human activity, so it is crucial that this next generation is educated and develops an appreciation for these great species.”

Students taking classes in multimedia design, ceramics, drawing and painting, marine ecology, as well as digital photography, got to partake in an annual field trip to seek creative inspiration through whale watching.

This year, for the first time ever, students from San Juan Hills High School also were able to enjoy the whale watching experience.

One retired teacher was also able to board the trip as a naturalist for Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching. Nana Reiner taught at John Malcom Elementary School in Laguna Niguel. Several of her former middle school students were also on the trip, now as high school students.

“I taught for 31 years with Capistrano Unified School District,” Reiner said. “I started

being a naturalist for Dana Wharf in 2018 after I retired from teaching. Now I run into students and families all the time who come out whale watching. It’s wonderful to see the community come together to appreciate these mind-blowing whales migrating along our coastline.”

This year the students have the opportunity to enter a Dana Point Arts and Culture Commission juried contest to compete for a chance to have their work chosen to be on display at the Dana Point Community Center in April and May. The work will be for show and sale on March 15 at the DHHS/SJHHS Young Artists' Show and Sale at the Festival of Whales. Dana Point City Council will recognize the winners at a council meeting.

“The annual inspiration field trip fulfills an important part of the Dana Point Festival of Whales Foundation’s mission to share an appreciation for the beauty and majesty of the ocean environment and its inhabitants,” said Andrea Swayne, festival coordinator.

“We hope something as awe-inspiring as the sight of a breaching whale can plant a seed that will grow into a lifetime of environmentalism.” DP

2020 Dana Hills High School Spring Sports Preview Senior shortstop Jackie Stilwell was Dana Hills’ hits leader last season with 31. Stilwell was also the co-leader in runs with 23 to go with 10 RBI, four doubles and a home run.

Stilwell also led the team in stolen bases with 13.

As a freshman, Kaci Palmer was the other co-leader in runs scored at 23. Palmer added 24 hits with 12 RBI, two doubles, a triple and two home runs. Palmer also stole eight bases.

Junior Madi Wood takes over in the circle full-time for the Dolphins. Last season, as a complement to Goetz, Wood made 12 appearances with a 2.33 ERA over 45 innings pitched. Palmer also will help in the pitching department.

The Dolphins are 0-2 on the early season and continue at the Northwood Tournament on Feb. 29. Dana Hills opens league play at home against Mission Viejo on March 24 and hosts rival Aliso Niguel on April 14.

he busiest portion of the CIF-SS sports calendar is upon us as the spring sports season kicks off across Southern California.

Dana Hills has 11 teams competing in the spring season, and almost all of them can expect some level of success.

Let’s check in and see how each group of Dolphins will fare in 2020:

BASEBALL The Dana Hills baseball team made a mad dash to qualify for the playoffs last season and lost in the first round to an eventual CIF-SS semifinalist, but the Dolphins earned valuable experience to bolster them this season.

Last season, Dana Hills won its last four games of the regular season to go from 2-6 in league to securing third place and a playoff spot. The Dolphins beat their direct competition for that spot, Mission Viejo, in the final two games.

The Dolphins are now loaded with seniors and players who have earned plenty of varsity experience from an early high-school age.

Dana Hills will be led by its pitching staff and a top-three rotation. Senior Dante Jackson and juniors CJ Zwahlen and Ian May will be the Dolphins’ go-to hurlers.

Jackson is on his way to San Diego State next season and is a lanky lefty who can also play the outfield. Zwahlen is a threeyear varsity player who played as a freshman, and May is a left-hander who will be fully healthy soon.

Dana Hills is also extremely deep on its pitching staff, with a number of guys who can step up, throw strikes and get through innings, including seniors Zack Saavedra and Evan McMillen.

Offensively, Jackson is the leading returner in RBI with 12 last season, contributing 24 hits (three doubles) and 13 runs.

Colorado Mesa-bound senior Ethan Ezor is the leading returner in hits with 14 last season, adding eight RBI with a double and a triple.

Strong returners for the Dolphins include Rhode Island-bound outfielder Thomas Buckanavage and junior catcher Rocco DiFrancesco.

son and opens the Loara Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Dolphins host Aliso Niguel on March 4 and open league play at Capistrano Valley on March 11.

SOFTBALL Underclassmen led the way for the Dana Hills softball team last season, and that leaves the Dolphins in a strong position going into the 2020 season.

Last year’s South Coast League champions only had two seniors on the roster, and

despite one of them being dynamic starting pitcher Terra Goetz, Dana Hills has plenty in the tank for this season.

The Dolphins return their top six RBI leaders, top three hits leaders and top two run scorers. Dana Hills has options up and down the lineup.

Junior third baseman Piper Tago returns as the team’s RBI leader. Tago collected 28 RBI and scored 17 runs on 25 hits with four doubles, a triple and four home runs, a team high.

BOYS GOLF The Dana Hills boys golf team had another successful year in the South Coast League last season and returns a core group of its first-team players.

Last season, the Dolphins finished fourth at the CIF-SS South Coast Division Championships, just eight strokes out of secondplace and CIF-SS Finals qualification.

Junior Jason Bannister and senior Dylan Walsh tied for the Dolphins’ low round at 75.

Senior Thomas Dresden was the Dolphins’ top finisher at the CIF-SS Individual Southern Regional last season with a score of 77. However, Dresden was three strokes off the cut line and did not advance.

Other top returning players for Dana Hills are senior Preston Schlereth, junior Corbin Hill and sophomore Colin Whitehead.

Dana Hills opens its season in the Glendora Tournament on March 2. The Dolphins open league play on March 24 by hosting Capistrano Valley at El Niguel Country Club.

Dana Hills plays San Clemente at Talega Golf Club on April 14 and at Bella Collina San Clemente on April 16. South Coast League Finals will be played at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo on May 4-5.

(Cont. from page 12) Now, with team membership finally crossing the necessary threshold and the proper votes applied, lacrosse is an official CIF-SS organized sport. That means multiple divisions, weekly polls and official CIF-SS playoffs.

The Dana Hills boys have been placed in Division 2 for this first CIF-SS season.

The Dolphins had a solid 2019 season with a 10-4 overall record and a 4-2 record in the Sea View League. Dana Hills finished second in league, with two tight losses to league champion Aliso Niguel, which is also slotted for Division 2.

Senior attackman Tyler Hubbard will play at Adams State University next season.

Dana Hills plays at San Clemente on Feb. 24 and hosts Northwood on March 2. Dana Hills opens league at Capistrano Valley on March 24 and hosts San Juan Hills on March 31. The Dolphins play at Aliso Niguel on April 16 and host the Wolverines in the season finale on April 29.

GIRLS LACROSSE Despite a tough 2019 season, the Dana Hills girls lacrosse team started its first full CIF-SS season on a high note before the season even began.

Dolphins head coach Sterling Breckenridge begins his second season on Feb. 27, when Dana Hills hosts Tustin.

Dana Hills hosts Tesoro on March 13 and Great Oak on March 17.

The Dolphins kick off Sea View League play at El Toro on March 19 and host Mission Viejo on March 24. Dana Hills hosts Laguna Hills on March 26, El Toro on April 2 and Capistrano Valley on April 15.

BOYS TENNIS The rebuilding period continues for the Dana Hills boys tennis team.

After years and years of success and league championships, the Dolphins posted two subpar seasons in a row. Dana Hills was 4-12 overall and 2-6 in South Coast League play in 2018, and last season, the Dolphins were 1-12-1 overall and 1-6-1 in South Coast League play.

Dana Hills graduated its top two players from last season and now moves forward with a new coach in Dana Bozeman.

The Dolphins opened their season at Beckman on Thursday, Feb. 20, but results were not available at press time.

buco Hills on Feb. 25 and Laguna Beach on March 3. Dana Hills opens league at home against Aliso Niguel on March 17. The Dolphins host rival San Clemente on March 24 and play the Tritons on the road on April 16.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD The Dana Hills girls track and field team will once again be led by its stellar relay teams.

Seniors Anisa Rind and Mia Lawrence and junior Camryn Toole return from one of the, if not the, best 4x400-meter relay teams in school history. Those three Dolphins plus the graduated Hailey Ray finished third at State in the 4x400-meter relay after finishing sixth at Masters, fourth at CIF-SS Division 1 Finals and first at league finals.

The Cal Poly San Luis Obispo-bound Rind and Sacramento State-bound Lawrence also return with senior Leah Boskovich from a league champion 4x100-meter relay team that finished seventh at the CIF-SS Finals.

Rind also was a league champion in the 200- and 400-meter races. In the 200, Rind finished fifth at CIF-SS Finals and eighth at Masters, and in the 400, Rind finished eighth at CIF-SS Finals.

be in the throws with junior Logan Daniels.

Daniels was fifth at league finals in the discus and ninth at CIF-SS Finals.

The track and field program opens its dual meet season against Capistrano Valley on March 4 and opens its invitational schedule in the South County Classic at Trabuco Hills High School on March 6.

Orange County Championships are at Mission Viejo High School on April 18, and South Coast League Finals are at Trabuco Hills High School on May 1.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD As is the case when you have a legendary cross country program, the Dana Hills boys track and field team will again be led by its distance runners.

Carrick Denker is the lone returning league champion for the Dolphins. The Calbound senior won the 1,600-meter South Coast League title last season and went on to finish third at the CIF-SS Division 1 Finals, sixth at Masters and 14th at State preliminaries.

Denker is also coming off a strong cross country season in which he finished third at the Orange County Championships and at State. danapointtimes.com

Denker leads a cross country group that will push during all the distance races. Junior Jai Dawson was the frosh-soph 800-meter league champion last year and had a tremendous cross country season in the fall. Juniors Gianni Viola, Brandon Pizano and Ryan Broadhead will also contribute.

Senior John O’Melveny will compete in the 800-meter race and lead the relay group.

In the field events, senior Will Riviere is the Dolphin to watch in the high jump. Riviere was second in league and finished ninth at the CIF-SS Finals.

Other Dana Hills field athletes to watch are senior Mason McKhann in the throws and junior Caleo Martinez in the jumps.

GIRLS SWIMMING The Dana Hills girls swimming team lost top senior performer Devon Forker to graduation, but the Dolphins move forward with a strong core group.

Sydney Querner leads that core group as a CIF-SS Division 1 Finals qualifier in four events. The William and Mary-bound senior finished 10th as an individual in the 50-yard freestyle and also swam in the 100-yard freestyle.

two other returners that make up that returning nucleus. Querner, along with juniors Lucy Kao and Anna Nemeth, swam in the 200yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle medley relay.

Kao also qualified for the CIF-SS preliminaries in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke. Nemeth qualified for the preliminaries in the 200-yard freestyle and the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Two other returners – juniors Emma Mason and Julianna McKenzie – also qualified on that 400-yard freestyle relay.

The Dolphins also have a returning CIF-SS finalist diver in sophomore Olivia Paquette, who finished eighth as a freshman last season.

BOYS SWIMMING The Dana Hills boys swimming team will fall in line behind a top star, with several other quality swimmers filling in the ranks.

Leading the Dolphins in the pool is senior Ryan Abdollahi. The USC-bound swimmer is

strong in multiple disciplines for Dana Hills.

Last season, Abdollahi showcased that range of disciplines and finished third in the 200-yard individual medley at the CIF-SS Division 1 Finals. Abdollahi also finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Abdollahi also qualified for the CIF-SS Finals as a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team along with current senior Curren McCarthy and juniors Steven Seibert and Evan Abdollahi.

Evan Abdollahi and Seibert qualified for the CIF-SS preliminaries in the 500-yard freestyle and in the 200-yard medley relay alongside returning senior Nick Saeedi.

The boys swimming team opens its dual meet season at Portola on March 3 and hosts Mission Viejo on March 17. The Dolphins host rivals Aliso Niguel on April 15 and San Clemente on April 21.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL After making its deepest run in some time last season, the Dana Hills boys volleyball team is prepped for more success this season.

Last year, the Dolphins advanced to the CIF-SS Division 2 quarterfinals for the first time since 2014, when the Dolphins made

their third of three straight Division 1 quarterfinals appearances. Dana Hills hasn’t made the CIF-SS semifinals since 2002 and the CIF-SS Final since winning the championship in 1986.

Dana Hills is led by a strong group of seniors and a talented supporting cast. UC San Diego-bound Nick Rigo is the returning leader in kills for the Dolphins, and senior setter Chase Morrison returns to run the offense.

Long Beach State-bound Caden Jackson handles the defensive end as a libero.

While Dana Hills will be in its second year under head coach Taylor Hammond, the Dolphins seniors will be playing for the memory of legendary Dana Hills coach Oz Simmons, who died from cancer in September. Morrison, Jackson and Rigo were all sophomores on Simmons’ last varsity roster in 2018.

Dana Hills won’t play at home until hosting Sage Hill on March 10. The Dolphins will try to avenge their playoff ouster when they take on Saddleback Valley Christian, on the road, on March 19.

Dana Hills opens league play at Tesoro on March 24 and hosts Aliso Niguel on March 26. The Dolphins will play at San Clemente on April 2 and host the Tritons in the season finale on April 28. DP danapointtimes.com

Hobie’s Next Generation Arrives DP’s Ian Gottron and the iconic surfboard brand are making some magic

ntil now, Dana Point stylist Ian Gottron’s biggest claim to fame was that he had a donut named after him.

Specifically, the “Gato-San” at Nikki’s Cafe.

Well, Gato-San just hit the jackpot. Joining the distinguished surf team at Hobie, he’s going to be bringing his youthful energy, unique perspectives and some serious homegrown talent to the squad.

“We’re really stoked to be working with Ian,” Hobie’s Kris Carlow said when San Clemente Times caught up with him earlier this week. “It’s really important for us to support local surfers and put our energy into our community. With our shops in Dana Point and San Clemente, our roots have always been here, and it’s important to continue that into the future. And Ian definitely represents that next generation.”

Putting its money where its mouth is, Hobie is also working closely with fellow Dana Point cross-stepper Makala Harmony Smith.

Grace personified on a surfboard, she’s on the forefront of a huge movement of women who are taking log riding and single-fin shredding in an exciting new direction.

relationship with Hobie will kick off with the development of three new models. He’ll be working closely with shaper Michael Arenal as they develop the perfect all-round quiver.

“The project is still in its infancy stages, but we are building him a longboard, midlength and shortboard model as part of his collection,” Carlow said.

Gottron and Arenal will look to the designs of the late ’60s and early ’70s as they develop a “transition era” mid-length board that will feature the classic aesthetic of that revolutionary period in surfing and combine it with more modern bottom contours and design elements. The shortboard will be more of a fish model with some subtle tweaks and adjustments.

Teaming up with Arenal is an ideal situation for Gottron. Growing up surfing Salt Creek, Arenal’s eye for design and attention to detail make him one of the great young shapers in our area.

“My dad—a mechanical engineer—raised me to work with my hands. We built gokarts and stuff. So when it came to a point where I really started getting interested in surfing, it seemed natural to start making some surfboards,” Arenal explained in a written piece for Hobie.

One of the guiding lights in his development as a shaper was Donald Brink. Originally from South Africa, Brink now works and lives in the Capo Beach zone. Known for his craftsmanship and creativity, Brink helped give a young Arenal the motivation

“Y

ou can’t lose in surfing,” says Eryk Brandt.

That, my friends, is a scientific fact. You absolutely cannot lose in surfing, “because how can you lose while doing something you love?”

A 12-year-old shredder from Capistrano Beach, Eryk learned to surf when he was 8 years old. His dad taught him the ropes at Doheny. These days, he’s a hard-charging sixth-grader at Shorecliffs Middle School.

“I’m inspired to surf and catch waves,” he exclaims. “I really enjoy the ocean and having fun while I’m in it.”

Where does he see surfing taking him in the next 10 years?

“I don’t know, maybe I could be a pro surfer, or I’ll be in college studying animals or biology and playing soccer,” he says. “I love anything that has to do with animals no matter how scary or bizarre they may be; I just love being Dana Point Times February 21-27, 2020

he needed to get started.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for Donny,” Arenal continued. “I remember coming to Donny’s shop to show him the first board I’d shaped. Terry (Martin) was there hanging out. They both looked at my strange mini Simmons-like shape and had positive things to say about it. (That) was all the inspiration I needed.”

Like any good surfer-shaper relationship, Gottron and Arenal will continue to finetune the models until they’re ready for public consumption. The first iterations of the boards are expected to land in shop racks sometime next month.

In terms of where Gottron takes his surfing from here, the sky is pretty much the limit. Dana Point Surf Club president Eric Diamond has been watching him surf his whole life—he even coined the nickname “Gato-San”—and sees big things ahead.

“I really feel Ian is going to evolve more in bigger Hawaiian waves in the years to come,” Diamond said. “It’s really never been about a trophy; he is just a stoked young man who surfs really, really well. He falls into the Dana Point flow masters—the school of ‘ride what makes you happy,’ a la school of Tyler Warren and Kolton Sullivan.

“I mean, he’s comfortable pulling into massive mainland barrels or just hanging ten at one-foot Boneyard. I’ve seen him out surfing a crowded Creek on a pink, finless softtop, literally schooling everyone on what wouldn’t even be considered a surfboard.”

Well, now that he does have some pretty epic surfboards under his feet, the future is wide open for Gottron. It’s going to be fun to see where he and Hobie take things. In the words of Humphrey Bogart, this could be the beginning of a beautiful relationship. DP
