Five things Dana Point should know this week City of Dana Point Announces Call for Artists to Beautify Utility Boxes THE LATEST: The City of Dana Point and its Arts and Culture Commission is inviting artists to participate in the city’s first-ever utility box art program.

It’s part of a city initiative to beautify the community and contribute to the vitality and attractiveness of Dana Point streetscapes. The pilot program seeks artists to showcase their work and beautify eight utility boxes located throughout Dana Point.

“This is such a great way to showcase local artists and help to promote their work. Our utility boxes provide a truly unique public space for artists to display their talent, and the city benefits by bringing art to unexpected spaces,” said Mayor Richard Viczorek. “The art is envisioned to brighten each area, transform the street and reflect the local neighborhood where the utility box is located.”

The competition is open to all adults and student practicing artists. Applications were released on February 3 and submissions are due by March 2. The Commission will select the artist with installation targeted for April/May. The Commission will consider artistic excellence, innovation and originality, as well as the artwork’s ability to meet project goals and transform the project area. In addition, the artwork should portray the City’s culture, historic heritage or a key activity.

Bev has guided the Chamber with a steady hand, protecting its revenues and maintaining a strong fiscal policy,” said former Chamber Chairman Michael Fox in the September press release.

No further explanation for Jorgensen’s departure was provided.

THE LATEST: The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce announced the recent hiring of Vickie McMurchie, who will serve as Executive Director starting this month. McMurchie’s first day on the job was Thursday, February 6.

McMurchie comes to the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce with more than 15 years of marketing and event management experience. Most recently, McMurchie worked as Director of Development at Orange County Academy of Sciences and Arts and as Marketing and Special Events Manager at the Outlets at San Clemente. This background, along with her previous time as Senior Operations Manager at the Dana Point Chamber, will help McMurchie make a smooth transition into her new position as Executive Director.

“My priority is our member businesses,” McMurchie said. “I want to ensure that they understand the benefits of their Chamber membership and recognize that they can turn to our staff for assistance or resources to help their

THE LATEST: Local patriots are invited to join the Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group (DPSG) in showing support and gratitude to service members who will be competing in the Marine Corps Trials (MCT) at Camp Pendleton from Feb. 28-March 12.

Wounded, ill and injured service members from all over the world will compete in eight sporting events taking place over 15 days. Archery, cycling, swimming, seated volleyball, wheelchair basketball, shooting, and track and field will comprise the various competitions.

Making up the contestant field will be active-duty Marines, military veterans and service members from invited Allied Nations.

“These sporting competitions are extremely vital to these Warrior-Athletes as they continue to reclaim their lives after their devastating injuries,” a DPSG press release states.

The DPSG will be providing meals to the Wounded Warriors for three events: breakfast for the track and field events on Thursday, March 5; box lunches for shooting events on Friday, March 6; and box lunches for the cycling event on Sunday, March 8. It is estimated that the cost for serving these meals to the athletes will exceed $10,000.

“Our patriotic civilians are stepping up to make donations in honor of these warrior-athletes, along with the Stanley W. Ekstrom Foundation, the Strand at Headlands and the Transportation Corridor Agencies, who have also made generous contributions for this worthy cause,” the release says. “Just $15 will buy lunch for one of these heroic athletes.”

(Cont. from page 3) Emergency Services Department, along with Orange County Intelligence Assessment Center and Orange County Fire Authority, will be conducting a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Academy from Feb. 28-March 1.

The Academy will be hosted by the Monarch Hills Association and will include FEMA-certified classes, including First Aid, Light Search and Rescue, Disaster Psychology, Terrorism, Fire Suppression, Disaster Medical Operations and Disaster Preparedness.

Participants will be a mix of Monarch Hills residents and residents from throughout the Dana Point community.

“The classes are delivered free of charge with an emphasis on educating our Dana Point residents in disaster preparedness,” said James Shadle, senior management analyst for the city. “Upon completion, graduates will be tested in a live drill putting out small fires, applying first aid and setting up a medical triage area. The goal is for our residents to be better prepared to help themselves and their community both before and after a disaster strikes.”

The training program will go over preparedness, disaster psychology, fire suppression, search and rescue, medical operations, assembling a search and rescue bag and more.

City of Dana Point Continues Legal Action to Remediate Capistrano Seaside Inn Battle THE LATEST: The Jan. 31 status conference for the City of Dana Point’s legal battle with Capistrano Seaside Inn was continued by the court on its own motion to March 13.

In the meantime, the court-appointed receiver for the aging property has filed a report with the court for its consideration explaining its independent investigation into Seaside’s desire to demolish the hotel and build a new project at the site.

The extensive report concludes that demolition is not a viable solution because of legal requirements that effectively preclude that as a remedy, and because of practical considerations related to restricted room rates that would apply as a result of Coastal Act considerations.

The receiver recommended that the court require the property owner to remediate the conditions per the plans that have already been approved, or alternatively to require the property to be sold to a hotel operator that has already been identified, who has agreed to remediate the property pursuant to those plans.

A settlement agreement previously had been reached in which the current owner agreed to allow the court-appointed receiver to sell the property.

The property along Pacific Coast Highway in Capistrano Beach was constructed around 1930 with some office space and 28 motel rooms. It was regarded as one of the last remaining roadside motels in Dana Point, helping to shape California car culture.

A receiver was court-appointed for the property per the request of the City of Dana Point after significant nuisance complaints and code violations. City staff attempted to work with the property owner over the course of seven months to bring the property into compliance, but after failure to comply with the city’s requests, the city sought the court’s assistance, according to a city press release sent in March.

A receiver acts as a representative in bringing the property into compliance.

Dana Point Times reported in May that a judge had dismissed the owner of Capistrano Seaside Inn’s bankruptcy claim as a bad-faith claim and that both the City of Dana Point and the motel owner were ordered to have a settlement conference.

“Since the appointment of the receiver, progress to remediate the nuisance conditions at the Seaside Inn has been slower than desired because of the property owner’s objections filed in the legal proceedings and the need to ensure proper legal procedures and formalities are followed,” according to a city statement. “The property owner Page 5

has been very litigious, and has engaged in a number of tactics designed to delay the process. Since the Receiver was appointed, the property owner has attempted on at least five occasions to have the receivership terminated.”

Compounding the delays that have occurred, in May the parties reached a settlement by which the property would have been sold to a third party, who would have restored it pursuant to permits that are ready to be issued.

“Unfortunately, the property owner reneged on the settlement, and the Court has thus far declined to enforce it,” said Patrick Munoz, the city’s attorney.

City staff previously stated that plans for the repair of the hotel had been prepared, and building permits are ready to be issued. The plans would result in the restoration of the property in a manner that would preserve its historic characteristics. While awaiting implementation of these plans, the court-appointed receiver has been securing the property to guard against trespassers and ensure the historical characteristics of the property are not further denigrated.

A court hearing was originally scheduled for Jan. 31 at Orange County Superior Court in Santa Ana. “These issues will be addressed at the March 13 court date,” a city statement said. “The City will continue to provide updates on this case upon rulings of the court.”

At that time, the court will have the opportunity to allow the receiver to complete its work and abate the nuisance conditions at the property.—LB danapointtimes.com

Dana Point City Council Hears Strategic Plan Review from Staff Dana Point City Council convened on Tuesday, Feb. 4 for a brief, regular council meeting. The only two new business agenda items included a strategic plan review the appointment of city council representatives to outside agencies—a topic that stirred relatively mild, yet firm, debate.

City Manager Mark Denny led a presentation putting 2019 in perspective regarding the city’s strategic plan measurements. The review followed metrics that council had set for staff to follow. “(The city’s) vision is a vibrant, world-class city,” said Denny. “Our mission is to set the standard for an exceptionally livable city.”

According to the presentation, part 1 crimes—such as robbery, burglary and theft—are down. Part 2 crimes—such as DUI, forgery, curfew violations and vandalism—are up.

In looking over trolley ridership, Denny stated numbers had decreased despite the expansion of the Dana Point Trolley system. The decrease was attributed to the Festival of Whales parade being canceled due to inclement weather and the Ocean Institute opting out of using trolley service for the Tall Ships & Ocean Festival.

For the city’s goal of being fiscally responsible and accountable, the municipality hit the following objectives set: no major financial audit findings; providing public access to the city budget and spending data; obtain the Government Finance Officers Association award for financial reporting excellence each year; and maintain reserves at policy levels set by council.

Council Approves Appointments of Councilmember Representatives for Committees Each year, city council considers the appointment of councilmember representatives and alternates to outside governmental agencies. Staff provided these appointments to council for review if they had any changes. According to a staff report, Councilmember Debra Lewis asked that Councilmember Joe Muller be removed from the Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency and that she be appointed as the city’s representative.

“It was not a shock to me that Councilmember Lewis wanted this; we talked about this last year as well,” Muller said. “I’m also a member of the OCTA board as well. My goal has been these two agencies together.”

The Orange County Transportation authority and the Transportation Corridor Agencies have clashed recently over the South County Traffic Relief Effort being led by Caltrans in conjunction with TCA. OCTA has released statements opposing proposed routes that convert Measure Mfunded HOV lanes into tolled lanes.

“They’re going to turn our freeways into toll lanes. . . . How that’s going to help anybody, I have no idea,” Lewis said. “But that’s the kind of administration we have in this agency. I think it’s been very poorly managed to say the least. I would have liked to see some more critical voices.”

City council voted to approve the list of appointments, essentially allowing Muller to continue serving on the Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency, with Lewis and Councilmember Paul Wyatt dissenting.

Walk for Wellness Event Fundraises for Wellness and Prevention Center Strength Over Silence (SOS) invites people of all ages to participate in the second annual Walk for Wellness. The goal of SOS is to raise public awareness about mental health and suicide prevention. SOS is a student-led organization, developed and executed by the award-winning Future Problem Solvers Club at San Juan Hills High School.

The Walk for Wellness features a walk on the peaceful and scenic San Juan Hills High School track from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Although participants will set their own pace and duration, everyone is encouraged to try to complete at least 12 laps (3 miles).

This fun and educational event will include

a free R U OK? book written by Kristi Hugstad, activity booths, free breakfast and lunch, water and snacks, opportunity drawings, prizes and free parking.

During the event, SOS will be handing out blue and purple satin ribbons and necklaces that participants can wear in honor of a friend or family member who has been impacted by mental illness.

Proceeds raised from the Walk for Wellness will be donated to the San Clemente Wellness and Prevention Center.

Become a Hero Club to Host Blood Drive at San Clemente High San Clemente High School’s Be a Hero, Become a Donor Club will host a community blood drive in the Triton Center at the end of the month.

On Friday, Feb. 28, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the local community is invited to the school to participate in the drive by donating blood that could help save lives.

Adults who participate will be able to go to the front of the line. No appointments are necessary, but participants must first register in the school’s front office.

In 2008, then-San Clemente High senior Liam Smith started the school’s club chapter for the organization, following the death of 9-year-old Evan Cousineau. Since then, the club has hosted two donor drives a year, collecting 2,961 units of blood and saving 8,883 lives through the blood donation efforts.

Gina Cousineau, Evan’s mother and a San Clemente resident who founded the BAHBAD organization, said she’s “appreciative to SCHS for allowing our community to participate, sharing our vital resources and giving life, as giving in this way is the ultimate in recycling.”

Metrolink to Conduct System Improvements to Tracks in Dana Point, San Clemente Metrolink is currently conducting system improvements along a portion of the railroad tracks between Dana Point and San Clemente, according to the City of San Clemente.

Crews were scheduled to conduct the improvements to the tracks adjacent to Beach Road in Dana Point and near North El Camino Real between Camino San Clemente and Avenida Estacion in San Clemente, beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

The work will be done on the weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., the city noted.

The Metrolink crews are expected complete the work by Friday, Feb. 14.

During this improvement work, there are likely to be such impacts as noise from the equipment backup alarms and heavy machinery; noise, vibration and dust from the construction-related activities; and lights from the light towers.

While the work area is taking place next to a designated Quiet Zone, per the Federal Railroad Administration’s safety regulations, it’s likely that trains will be required to blow their horns because of the crews working on or near the tracks.

A King’s Ransom King Tides Offer Perspective on Impacts of Sea Level Rise

T

he Feb. 8-9 weekend will see a phenomenon of an especially high tide event for the second time this year, and several agencies are asking the public to help document the event with photos and video.

While the “king tide” isn’t technically a scientific term, the California Coastal Commission refers to the phrase and phenomenon to illustrate and contextualize the potential impacts of sea level rise (SLR). When king tides occur during floods or storms, water levels can rise higher and have the potential to cause great damage to the coastline and coastal property, in a way that can offer insight on future effects of sea level rise. The most recent king tide event was Jan. 10-12.

The peak of the king tides will occur roughly at 6:30 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Ocean Institute in Dana Point will be leading a guided king tide tour on each

day at 10:30-11 a.m. While the tours won’t be during the peak tide, attendees will still see the differences in tide, says tour guide Kelsey Reimer.

Reimer also led tours during the January tide event. She says the tours are opportunities for the public to learn more about sea level rise and for her to address misconceptions.

“One common thing I hear is people saying 1-2 feet of sea level rise is not a big deal,” Reimer said. “We are already experiencing extreme weather. With the extra 1-2 feet, it’s going to pile onto that damage. There would be flooding in areas not prone to flooding previously.”

The City of Dana Point recently completed a Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment and found that for the 2050 time horizon, the “likely” range of SLR is between 0.7-1.2 feet, which means there is a 66% probability that SLR will fall within this range.

After tours, attendees are able to walk away with more context and awareness, Reimer says.

“Water is an extremely destructive force. It’s not just something that looks nice in sunset pictures,” Reimer said. “Sea level rise could cause us to spend millions of taxpayer dollars on infrastructure. It’s important for people to understand the extremity of sea level rise.”

The California Coastal Commission and Surfrider Foundation are encouraging people to document the event for

the commission’s California King Tides Project. Reimer suggests photographers capture scenes that will offer the viewer perspective—such as waves hitting human-made infrastructures.

“By documenting and sharing photos and sharing what they notice, participants will help others understand that they're part of a community that cares about climate change,” a CCC news release stated.

“In addition, the images shared by the public are used by State and local officials as well as climate change researchers to validate sea level rise models and better assess local flood vulnerabilities.”

The content will also be available for educators, students, and the general public to explore flooding impacts on the shoreline and to visualize near-term climate change For several decades, Surfrider Foundation has monitored development and coastal erosion along the shoreline.

Stefanie Sekich-Quinn is the coastal preservation manager for the foundation’s Climate Change and Coastal Preservation Initiative.

“There’s been an uptick in extreme weather events, and we don’t see that getting any better,” Sekich-Quinn said.

“When you have a king tide lapping up against a community, it can give you a bird’s-eye view of what we could need to do in the future to mitigate.”

The CCC is encouraging the public to document current flood risk in coastal

areas through video and photos. For those who would like to participate in the commission’s King Tides Project, use your smart phone to take and upload photos of king tides through the King Tides Photo Upload form at coastal.ca.gov/kingtides.

“The tides are going to be most noticeable in lower-lying areas, like a low-lying sidewalk,” said Sekich-Quinn. “If you can safely do so, take a picture of anything you think is striking . . . see how a wave goes up against infrastructure.”

The CCC cautions the public to be safe and take extra precautions when walking on slippery areas or near big waves.

Do not turn your back on the ocean and be mindful of shore birds taking refuge in areas above the shoreline. If you post your images to social media, the CCC will like and share photos with the hashtag #kingtides.

“It’s one of those things where in today’s world, everything is delicate, with trigger words like ‘climate change,’ ” Reimer said. “When we have a program that gets people out, they collect the data, upload it and see how it’s published and used for research . . . that’s a new level of transparency—a kind of transparency that we haven’t seen in the past. If we experience it together, then we get to learn about it together.”

What I am not convinced of is the absolute necessity for any possible financing for this proposed project being put through a second 30-year mortgage on my residence.

It is great to be witness to democracy in action. This is especially poignant for me personally, as Measure H and Measure I will be before the voters to transform

several schools throughout the Capistrano Unified School District.

What led to Measure H and Measure I began two years ago when I made a decision to apply to serve on the Finance and Facilities Advisory Committee, and the board took the risk to appoint me to the committee and the privilege I had to serve as its vice chair during deliberations.

It was quite a journey, as I was witness to selfless souls who truly lived up to Victor Hugo’s admonition to make sure one always looked to the future, because if the Almighty wanted humans to go back to the past, human heads would have had an eye behind them.

One of the most important aspects of our committee’s work over the past two years was its independence. I was so proud to see the vibrancy of the debate and how we challenged the staff at every turn.

Although we were appointed by the board, we did not take direction from the board and took our charter seriously. I commend the board for adopting both measures for the voters unanimously, because the idea of creating a safe and amenable environment for our children should not be up for debate.

I remembered a conversation I had with an Aliso Niguel student who was jealous

after we finished a meeting at JSerra, and I told him to have faith and stay strong— and this Wolverine is now in his first year at UC Berkeley studying engineering.

For me, this journey has been about him and the thousands of other kids who look to us to make sure we create a future of which they can be proud.

I remain hopeful and optimistic.

As a teacher and coach at San Clemente High School for the past 33 years, as well as a former Triton (’81), I can personally attest to the desperate need for repair and modernization of our 55-yearold campuses in SC. The Measure H bond for CUSD would provide the funds for repairs to plumbing, HV/AC, and electrical, as well as the creation of STEM classrooms, modern

facilities, and access to the technology necessary for 21st-century education.

We have never had an opportunity like this in the Capistrano Unified School District, where the funds are specifically mandated for repairs and modernization of only SC and Capistrano Beach schools, and cannot be used for any other purpose.

We teachers have seen the plans and are excited. With minimal cost to each homeowner, we can have a positive impact on the learning environment for thousands of youth, be eligible to receive matching funds from the state, and raise our property values. The investment is worth it.

Many questions, misinformation, and rash statements are out there about this bond. I encourage everyone to form their opinion on Measure H based on the facts. CUSD invites you to tour SCHS to learn about Measure H and potential upgrades and repairs to meet the same academic and safety standards.

San Clemente, this is your high school and has been a focal point of our community for the past 55 years. Local investment is our obligation. There is no better way to express your “One Town, One Team” loyalty than to pass Measure H in March.

BILY IS A BLESSING TO THE COMMUNITY EILEEN SPATZ, San Clemente

I am a longtime resident of San Clemente (34 years) and have been fortunate to know the Hazlett family for decades now.

In fact, our sons were close friends in high school.

Gina Hazlett provided an excellent synopsis of the Because I Love You (BILY) program, the local chapter of which she founded in 2015, in a recent edition of the SC Times’ Wellness & Prevention column.

As a mother who tragically lost her son to suicide in 2013, I only wish this organization had been available to me during the last few years of his young life as he battled depression and alcoholism.

What a wonderful resource BILY is to parents of teens or young adults who are struggling with mental health issues, addiction, or other behavioral problems.

Parents feel utterly helpless when they see their precious son or daughter spiraling out of control.

Our community is so very blessed to have available such an organization as BILY, that not only assists parents in navigating the many obstacles we are faced with but can actually improve the overall

family dynamic in the process.

San Clemente has some amazing resources available for our youth and their parents.

In addition to BILY, we have the Community Outreach Alliance (COA) and its wonderful “Thrive Alive” program; Susan Parmelee’s Wellness and Prevention Coalition and San Clemente High’s counseling resources; San Clemente Chaplain Resources headed by Pondo Vleisides; the Boys and Girls Club; and various church youth ministries.

Parents are encouraged to access the many sources of support, coping tools, and referrals available through these local efforts that are working so hard to help the San Clemente community as a whole.

On Stage at The Coach House: Pat Boone

at Boone has seen and done it all—he’s been a musical performer, author, humanitarian, and all-around pop culture icon.

A Feb. 15 performance at The Coach House could be one of his last times performing music on stage, according to the man himself.

Boone will be 86 in June and while he still sings, rides his bike and stays active, he feels it could be time to wind things down.

“I know the clock is ticking, and this will be my last performance in the area,” Boone said. “My career spans 65 years now.”

Besides the San Juan Capistrano concert, the only other concert Boone has on the horizon is one in Branson, Missouri. The Branson show will be at Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theater, which Boone finds to be an appropriate location for a finale.

“It’s fitting, because Dick Clark and I were very close friends,” said Boone, who appeared on Clark’s TV show, American Bandstand.

When Boone takes the stage at The Coach House, he plans to perform all his hit songs, including “Speedy Gonzales.”

He’ll even perform one he doesn’t usually do but holds local relevance: “When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano.”

“I’m rehearsing these songs knowing this may be the last time I ever sing these songs,” Boone said.

The Feb. 15 show will also feature a tribute to his late wife, Shirley Boone, who died in January 2019. Along with his personal memories of his wife, Boone also wants the tribute to connect to the older couples and widows and widowers in the audience, and he is thinking of the Feb. 15 concert as his Valentine’s Day show since the performance is a day after the holiday.

“I sing this for them,” he said.

shunned by the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) for getting involved in heavy metal. Boone, a devout Christian, flirted with the heavy metal look and genre with a wink-wink attitude at one point in his career, which TBN initially wasn’t amused by.

“I had judged heavy metal music and the performers, but when I covered the music, I found I could perform some of the songs myself,” Boone said.

The audience members at The Coach House will be there because his music was woven into their life at some point in some way, he said—a connection he also feels on his end.

“If they come to The Coach House, they will be part of my life,” Boone said.

“I hope every seat will be full, because this will be a very memorable night.”

Even though Boone’s time on stage is coming to an end, he isn’t unhappy about stepping away from the spotlight and said his music will live on. He will continue to spend time with his family and attending to his other endeavors, including missionary work.

“It’s been an incredible career. I want it to be a party and a happy time,” Boone said. “I want to go out with flair, singing and feeling good. I won’t be sad by any means. This is going to be the capstone to an amazing career.”

ave you noticed renewable energy is going mainstream?

San Diego Gas & Electric lets you switch to renewable energy. SDGE.com/EcoChoice has a calculator for different types of customers to calculate the savings.

For instance, for 500 kilowatt hours (kWh) of use in a month: • Switching to 50% renewable would save a residence $1.09, a small business $1.53, a medium/large business $4.53.

• Switching to 100% renewable would save a residence $2.19, a small business $3.06, a medium/large business $9.06.

If you have an electric vehicle, you should definitely choose an electric vehicle (EV) plan for more savings. What I really like about EV is that I can “fuel” it while I sleep, and pay the super-off-peak rate. In my pre-EV life, I cannot tell you how many times I was late for something already, the car was low on gas, too, and you know the rest of the story.

Another renewable trend is switching to electric appliances (or all-electric homes).

Unlike gas appliances that release pollutants that cause respiratory illnesses such as asthma, electric appliances don’t pollute the air and are more efficient.

You might be thinking, “What about blackouts?” Microgrids are a solution. Currently, the power comes from miles away, through a vast electrical system. If one of

the areas needs to shut power off for fire protection, we might be off, too. We need local power, starting with solar panels on roofs and in parking lots.

These kinds of initiatives need to be spearheaded before sea-level rise worsens.

According to California Energy Commission’s report Assessment of California’s Natural Gas Pipeline Vulnerability to Climate Change, “California’s natural gas transmission system, much of which is located along the state’s waterways, is particularly vulnerable to damage caused by inundation (flooding). . . . Sealevel rise enables greater extents and depths of inundation during (extreme) storm events.”

Who is going to pay for the damage?

According to a Los Angeles Times story, “California ditched coal. The gas company is worried it’s next.” In city council chambers across Southern California, SoCalGas is working to convince local officials that policies aimed at replacing gas with electricity would be wildly unpopular.

The story states, “More than 100 cities and counties have endorsed the COMMUNITY, company’s push for ‘balSUSTAINABILITY, anced energy solutions’—a PROSPERITY

Sure Signs Twenty-five Dana Hills student-athletes honored on Signing Day

D

ana Hills High School celebrated 25 of its student-athletes signing on to continue their athletic and academic careers at colleges and universities in a National Signing Day ceremony at the school on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Twenty-five senior Dolphin athletes across 11 sports signed with 19 different universities and colleges. Volleyball led the way with six signees, followed by baseball with five and soccer with four.

“It feels good,” Dana Hills baseball pitcher Dante Jackson said. “We have a good program and good people around me. It’s a moment of relief. It’s really cool to have all my guys with me. We’re all a family.”

Jackson chose to sign with San Diego State for the location—close to the beach and his family.

Wednesday’s ceremony was the culmination of years of time and effort put into each athlete’s athletic and academic pursuits.

“I’m really excited,” Dana Hills water polo player Luke Malecka said. “I’m happy to be committed and have all my hard work pay off.

I’ve played club for 11 years . . . 12 years, played for four here at Dana, and it all worked out.”

Malecka signed with Long Beach State to stay close to home and get elite, Olympicexperienced coaching.

Boys Soccer Fights for Playoff Spot The Dana Hills boys soccer team played what amounted to a playoff game for third place in the Sea View League on Thursday, Feb. 6.

Going into Thursday, the Dolphins (510-2, 2-3-2) held the third and final playoff spot out of the Sea View League over Laguna Hills (8-11-2, 3-4-0) by the narrowest of margins. Girls Water Polo Takes Third in League The Dana Hills girls water polo team finished third in the South Coast League tournament with a semifinal loss to El Toro, 9-6, on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at San Clemente High School.

The Dolphins (14-11, 2-2) were seeded third after going through the one round of league play. Dana Hills beat Tesoro, 6-5, and Aliso Niguel, 10-8, and then lost to El Toro, 8-6, and to San Clemente, 16-5.

Dana Hills will be in the Division 3 playoffs. CIF-SS brackets will be released on Feb. 8, with the playoffs beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 11. DP danapointtimes.com

“He hasn’t forgotten about us, and we certainly haven’t forgotten about him.”

Based on Reid’s public comments, he probably hasn’t forgotten about that promise of tacos, either.

Super Bowl championship 50 years in the making is now being celebrated in Kansas City, and soon at a beach-city burger or taco joint near you.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid talked all throughout the NFL playoffs about celebrating wins by eating a cheeseburger and going to sleep. On Sunday, Feb. 2, after the Chiefs had completed a 31-20 comeback win over the San Francisco 49ers to take Super Bowl LIV in Miami, Reid said he was going to eat “the biggest cheeseburger you’ve ever seen . . . might be a double.”

However, whenever Reid makes his way to his $6.1 million summer beach home in Capistrano Beach, it’ll be Mexican food on the menu. “(After the AFC Championship game,) I said congrats,” San Clemente High School football coach Jaime Ortiz said. “Go out and win the championship and we’d go get Las

There, Reid lived around the corner from Walt Disney’s first California home and enjoyed Tommy’s burgers, which according to the Los Angeles Times, Reid said he orders frozen ones for mail delivery.

“I love those things,” Reid told the Los Angeles Times of Tommy’s. “It’s good for your

joints – the grease. Keeps you lubed up, man.”

Ortiz made a connection with the 21-year NFL head coaching veteran when Reid, while vacationing in South Orange County, took in a Tritons summer practice in 2017.

“He sat up in the stands, and we had no idea,” Ortiz said. “He’s a member of the Latter-Day Saints, and some of the players knew him when he came into town.”

Reid talked to Ortiz after the practice and said whenever he’s in town, he would love to

San Clemente native and JSerra alumnus Dante Pettis was listed as inactive for the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV. The former University of Washington standout receiver did not take a snap since Nov. 24 in a win over Green Bay, was not targeted since a Nov. 11 loss to Seattle and did not have a catch since a 21-yard touchdown at Arizona on Oct. 31. Pettis was active for the 49ers’ previous five games after returning from a knee injury suffered on Nov. 27.

Pettis was the first and only JSerra graduate to be selected in the NFL Draft when the 49ers selected him in the second round in 2018.

In 23 career games, Pettis has 38 receptions for 576 yards and seven touchdowns. DP

SC Sweeps at Pismo Pier Schulz, Lindblad take big wins at the SLO CAL Open at Pismo Beach

T

he World Surf League season is off and running, and in these early days, San Clemente has much to celebrate, as Kevin Schulz and Sawyer Lindblad just took out the SLO CAL Open at Pismo Beach.

For Schulz, the win was a moment of sweet redemption. Finishing runner-up at the iconic Central Coast pier the last time the contest was held two weeks ago, this time he did himself one better and topped the podium.

His path to victory led him through Huntington Beach’s Brett Simpson—both a childhood idol and his current friend.

“When I made the final, I knew I had to go big, and Brett was always going to be a big challenge to face,” said Schulz. “I just tried to come out of the gates quick. It’s always good to surf against your hero. I’ve looked up to Brett since I was a little kid. And now we’re good friends. To come out and win that final, it’s a dream come true. It’s almost surreal. You want to be excited and pumped, but you don’t know if it’s real.”

“This is my second event win, and it was actually kind of hard to hear out there, so I didn’t totally know what was going on; then when I came in, all the boys were standing on the beach with their hands up, so I knew I’d won at that point,” he added.

For Lindblad, who surfs on the Shorecliffs Middle School surf team, the win in Pismo Beach is a defining moment in her blossoming career. A 14-year-old who’s usually found in the Grom of the Week column, Sawyer made it clear she’s elevating her game by taking out this Qualifying Series contest for her first WSL victory.

“It’s like the biggest thing I’ve ever won; this is like the highlight of my life,” Lindblad said after being chaired up the beach by her friends. “All the girls are so good. It’s just so cool to be able to surf against all of them.”

A member of the U.S. Junior surf team, Lindblad is actually coached by Simpson, which makes the results from last weekend even more interesting.

Making the semifinals of the women’s division was fellow Lowers regular Kirra

Pinkerton. The 20-year-old lost out to eventual finalist Meah Collins, but not before posting a great result.

Last year, Pinkerton finished 35th on the WSL’s Qualifying Series and is looking to make a strong charge up the rankings this year. Her eventual goal is to graduate to the elite Championship Tour.

Pinkerton started the year off with a ninth-place finish at the Corona Open China, followed up by her victory in Hawaiian waters at the Sunset Pro Junior.

“It’s always good to get a win in the beginning of the year,” Pinkerton said after her win on the North Shore. “And then coming into this one and taking the win, I’m really looking forward to going to Australia and bettering my results there.”

ast week, the Volcom Pipe Pro went off in some pretty classic conditions at Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu, and it was epic to see San Clemente’s Max Beach make a few heats.

Beach is one of those kids who will forever be a grom to me, as I’ve had the pleasure of watching him grow up. But nowadays, he’s a big, strong, hard-charging young man.

Once you start making heats at Pipeline, you pretty much cease to be a grom. That’s some serious, grown-up surfing.

And because of that, Beach, this is your last Grom of the Week. You’re kicking out on top after a good run at the Pipeline—graduating, so to speak.

I’ve really enjoyed being able to showcase Beach’s surfing and celebrate his accomplishments here in this space, but it’s been more fun to share how hard he works, and that if you put your heart and soul into Dana Point Times February 7-13, 2020

throughout the rest of the year, so it’s still early, but it’s great to see our local surfers getting a jump on the season and posting some great results.

The Championship Tour doesn’t get underway for another month. The Corona Open Gold Coast at Snapper Rocks will kick off on March 26.

Kolohe Andino heads into the season ranked fifth in the world, coming off the best year of his career in which he contended for a world title. After finishing 2019 ranked 16th in the world, Andino’s buddy, Griffin Colapinto, will also be back on tour this year.

For what it’s worth, Andino and Colapinto were out at Uppers together last Saturday afternoon and were absolutely ripping. It’s radical how good they are—a couple of the best in the world. DP
