Five things Dana Point should know this week With Recent Rains, Ocean Institute Scientists Test Water Quality THE LATEST: With recent heavy rainfall in Dana Point, water quality scientists at Ocean Institute want citizens to ask themselves how pollution might impact our ocean water.

Science instructors and naturalists Laura Wong and Erica Chuc are part of the Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) at Ocean Institute under a partnership with Surfrider Foundation. BWTF is the Surfrider Foundation’s volunteer-run, water testing, education and advocacy program. The organization’s chapters use the program to alert citizens and officials in their communities about water quality problems by reporting pollution levels on Surfrider’s online database.

Every two weeks, and in the event of rainfall, Wong and Chuc obtain samples from Baby Beach, the dockside water at Ocean Institute, and off the shore in the protected marine area on the other side of the jetty.

The two researchers also tested a sample from the waterfall by Baby Beach during December’s heaviest rains, in order to compare pollution levels to the surrounding ocean.

The waterfall—made popular by social media—becomes prominent during rainfall and earlier this month, a sinkhole formed near the base, measuring 12 by 15 feet and 8 feet deep.

“We want to be able to provide this data so that people can make smarter decisions after heavy rain. It could be decisions about how long to wait after it rains to go back in the water . . . or it could get people to think more about how we can reduce pollution,” Wong said.

Surfrider Foundation is allowing Ocean Institute to use its equipment for the waterquality testing. The Quanti-Tray sealer tightly seals down the tray of samples and the incubator houses the tray as it processes for 24 to 26 hours. While these two pieces of equipment save the institute money, there are still recurring costs to replace sample jars, graduated cylinders and beakers.

“Once we use a sample jar for a quality test, it can’t be used again for an official test. But we always look for ways to recycle and reuse,” Chuc said.

Chuc and Wong plan on saving equipment to reuse in mock experiments for demonstrations with classrooms or tours.

consistently reporting her findings to the BWTF webpage at surfrider.org.

“When comparing the test samples side by side, you see a fair amount of pollution present in Baby Beach’s water. Fortunately, it dilutes by the dock and dilutes even more by the protected marine area,” Choc said. “But the results of the waterfall sample were daunting.”

Processed water samples are placed under a black light to see what level of pollution is present. The “wells” of water in a tray will glow if there is a presence of enterococci bacteria, a type of bacteria found in the gastrointestinal system and in fecal matter. The more glowing wells in the tray, the more enterococci. The waterfall sample taken in early December showed every well on the sample tray glowing under a black light.

“This made me really reevaluate how long people should wait to go in the water.

There’s this unspoken ‘two-day’ rule surfers have before going back in the water. But what if we could provide real-time data that indicated we should wait longer?” Chuc said.

“I know some surfers will go in the water sooner if the waves are perfect, but what if this information made them reconsider?”

While samples take at least a day before results are ready, Wong says that at this point the task force can analyze trends and make predictions to better serve the community. Due to the wait in getting results and the costliness of test taking, real-time data is not yet available to the public.

“Through citizen science initiatives, classroom tours and advocacy, we want to at least get people to think about working toward solutions,” Chuc said. “If our work can inspire a child to ask questions about how to reduce pollution, then we’ve done our jobs.”

CUSD Looks to Modernization of Ambuehl Elementary as Model for Potential Bond Measure THE LATEST: A plan to modernize Harold Ambuehl Elementary School in San Juan Capistrano in the near future is likely to be the Capistrano Unified School District’s (CUSD) leading example of what a proposed bond measure could achieve.

CUSD has proposed placing a bond measure on the ballot for the March 2020 Primary Election that, if passed, would authorize funding for capital facility projects throughout the district. In December, the trustees approved plans to poll voters in San Clemente, Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo and Dana Point in an effort to gather the community’s thoughts on the potential bond.

During a workshop meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 13, CUSD Chief Facilities Officer John Forney presented information to the Board of Trustees on the Ambuehl Elementary School Modernization Project, which the district hopes can be completed this summer.

Back in 2017, CUSD contracted the development company Kitchell as a consultant to conduct a districtwide assessment on the condition of the schools’ facilities, starting with Ambuehl Elementary as a case study, according to Forney.

The project would incorporate mandatory improvements from the Division of State Architect (DSA), Forney said. In his presentation to the trustees, he explained that CUSD staff and the district architect also met with Ambuehl teachers and staff, as well as the Parent Teacher Association and other stakeholders to gather ideas on improvement and input on existing facilities.

Some areas of the school the district is looking to modernize include the play area,

drinking fountains, fencing, restrooms, fire alarm safety and the library, which would eventually be called the “Innovation Center.”

One of the priorities that needs to be addressed, Forney said, is fire safety. The school currently has heavy fire doors that have to be closed manually to isolate fires. The modernization plan would install automated door systems in case of lockdowns and fires.

“To bring it to code, we’re going to replace all of those areas with an automated system . . . so things like in front of the office, if you had to go on lockdown and shut access points, you can push a button and it would close the doors,” Forney said.

“So, it’s kind of serving two purposes: it does the fire authority compliance as well as help with sight security.”

Forney said later that if CUSD does get the 2020 bond measure passed, safety compliances will need to be the main priority when it comes to future upgrades at the schools throughout the district.

“That’s what this exercise is going to show,” Forney said regarding the Ambuehl modernization. “When we start tackling (projects) in the future if we get the bond, we have to address these accessibilities and fire alarm safeties first and foremost.”

The plan also includes adding a corrugated metal structure for better shade, upgrading the play area equipment to include rubber surfacing, turning drinking fountains into water bottle fillers and improving the fencing near the entrance of the school.

Ambuehl, Forney said, also wants to be able to promote itself as well as highlight its identity. With that in mind, the modernization project intends to install a digital marquee and message board in the front of school.

And with the library becoming the Innovation Center, the school is looking to upgrade the lighting and install a kindergarten gathering space.

WHAT’S NEXT: Currently, DSA is reviewing the project, according to Forney. The district, he added, is anticipating DSA’s approval in April as the goal is to get the project out to bid for contractors as soon as possible.

Assuming that all goes according to plan, the project would then go before the trustees to award the contract in May, as CUSD is eyeing a construction start date in June, Forney said.

“It’s coming really quick,” he said.

Planning Commission Approves Project for ADA Compliance THE LATEST: The Dana Point Planning Commission approved a request for accessibility compliance (ADA) modifications, safety improvements, and to add changing cabanas within the existing outdoor shower area at Monarch Beach Resort.

A Coastal Development Permit (CDP) is required for projects that include improve-

ments within 300 feet of the mean high tide line and the first public street.

Wayne Rayfield was one of three speakers during the public hearing to voice approval of the project.

“My wife and I have owned property here since 20 years before the incorporation of the city. We have lived permanently in Monarch Bay since 1994, and we completely support this item on your agenda and hope you will approve the coastal development permit. It is vital to comply with the ADA statute,” Rayfield said.

The two other speakers were also longtime residents of Monarch Beach Club in favor of the upgrades.

According to the agenda report, none of the proposed improvements would impact access or any sensitive habitat, as the proposed improvements would not expand the existing development footprint, and all areas of work have already been developed and operating as part of the Monarch Bay Beach Club.

The commission unanimously approved the coastal development permit.

WHAT’S NEXT: Before the adjournment of the planning commission meeting, Chair Roy Dohner recognized Commissioner Danni Murphy for her service as chair with a special plaque. On Monday, Jan. 28, there was an adjustment in leadership for the Dana Point

Planning Commission. At the start of the regularly scheduled meeting, Commissioner Scott McKhann nominated Commissioner Roy Dohner as chair to take over for Chair Danni Murphy, and for Commissioner Mary Opel to take over Dohner’s position as vice chair. The commission unanimously approved the motion, with Commissioner Eric Nelson absent for the meeting.

The next regular meeting for the planning commission is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. at City Council Chamber, 33282 Golden Lantern. —LB

Final Environmental Report Published on SONGS Offshore Conduits THE LATEST: Public comment is now available for a portion of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) final environmental impact report (EIR) regarding the Unit 2 and 3 offshore conduits that were used to pull in ocean water to keep generators cool.

The proposed project will “remove offshore components and install mammal exclusion barriers for the Units 2 and 3 conduits; place temporary solid covers on top of the mammal exclusion barriers on the Unit 2 discharge conduit to allow for future use, if needed”; and it will “remove navigational and environmental monitoring buoys and anchors,” according to the executive summary of the EIR. WHAT’S NEXT: The State Lands Commission will meet to review, consider, and receive public comment on certification of the final EIR, and, if it is certified, the board will take action on the proposals on March 21 in Southern California. Woman to Come to Dana Point to Share Experience Spying on Nazis On Sunday, March 3, 98-year-old Marthe Cohn will share her story of bravery and espionage at the Dana Point Community House.

“It is rare that we have the opportunity in our lifetime to meet a heroine like Marthe Cohn,” said director of Chabad of Dana Point, Rabbi Eli, who is coordinating her visit. “I really hope every resident of our community – young and old – comes to hear this remarkable woman share her story.”

Cohn was born in Metz, France in 1920.

As a practicing Jewish woman, she lived across the German border in France at the time that Adolph Hitler rose to power.

As the Nazi occupation escalated, Cohn’s sister was sent to the Auschwitz internment camp while her family fled to the south of France. Cohn fought back by joining the intelligence service of the First French Army.

With her German accent and Aryan appearance, Cohn posed as a German nurse searching for information about a fictional fiancé. She traveled the countryside and approached troops sympathetic to her devised plight, obtaining critical information for the Allied commanders.

Cohn has received many honors, most notably France’s highest military honor, the Médaille Militaire, for facing death daily to defeat the Nazi Empire.

In 2002, Marthe penned her memoir, Behind Enemy Lines: The True Story of a French Jewish Spy in Nazi Germany, which will be available for purchase and signing at the event.

“We are trying to spread a little light,” Rabbi Eli said, “the best way to fight hatred is with education, and this is an important event for anybody to see.”

Angels Baseball Foundation will sponsor students from Title I schools in Anaheim in the spring and fall of 2019 to participate in ocean science exploration and experiments on the 70-foot research vessel, Sea Explorer, and in Ocean Institute’s waterfront science labs.

“Ocean Institute has a long-standing commitment to underserved children across Orange County by providing access to the ocean and to STEM-based, handson programs focused on the ocean and our local marine life,” said Ocean Institute president and CEO Dan Pingaro in a press release. “Adopt-A-Class is the gateway for many children to experience the ocean for the first time and it is a profound, lifechanging experience.”

Assisting children and supporting educational endeavors are two of the primary focuses of the Foundation, said Angels Baseball Chairman Dennis Kuhl.

“The impact of Adopt-A-Class in both teaching and influencing children from within the Anaheim community is so important,” Kuhl said. “The Ocean Institute has a long history of educating and inspiring. Our Foundation and the Angels Baseball family are proud to provide funding for these educational opportunities.”

Outlets to Manage New Visit California Information Center The Outlets at San Clemente recently was selected by the California Office of Tourism to host a Visit California Welcome Center.

The welcome centers provide information for tourists and locals. There is planned freeway signage that will direct motorists to the Outlets’ welcome center in the near future, as the retail manager works with the city on that.

Outlets marketing director Nicky See said that because the shopping center already has employees in its customer service department, they’ve been given training to be representatives of the welcome center.

“It is exciting for us and something that we’d been working on,” See said, adding that they needed support from the community and Chamber of Commerce.

There will be a grand opening and ribbon cutting on March 28 with times and specifics to be announced.

U.S. Coast Guard Asks Public Help in Illegal Passenger Operations The U.S. Coast Guard is asking for your assistance.

“Illegal passenger operations pose a danger to unsuspecting or ill-advised passengers, as well as the legitimate commercial passenger vessel industry,” a press release from the U.S. Coast Guard last week stated. “Legitimate operators, credentialed mariners and concerned customers are encouraged to report suspected illegal passenger vessel operations.”

OC Public Libraries to Offer Amnesty Day Starting this Week OC Public Libraries will offer its “Fine Free Library Days” from Feb. 14-24. Any items with overdue fines or items that have been marked as “lost” can be returned, and related fines and fees will be waived.

During a similar event in 2011, entitled “Amnesty Week,” 6,700 overdue items were brought back to the library system, equaling $167,925 in returned materials, according to OC Public Libraries. A survey of 18 branches during that time period revealed attendance up more than 4,500 users from the same week the previous year.

Legendary Musician and Surfer Passes Away Randy Nauert, a surfer and musical pioneer who played in one of the first surf bands, “The Challengers” (originally known as “The Bel-Airs”), passed away this week. In January 1963, the band released “Surfbeat” on Vault Records, and it became a massive hit and helped put the surf rock genre on the map. Nauert took the stage with Chuck Berry and most recently joined his friends at Surfing Heritage and Cultural Center (SHACC) in a “talk story” session at the annual Ohana Festival.

Anthony Small is Chairman of the Dana Point Arts and Culture Commission, frontman for local rock band Small World and a solo singer-songwriter. Small and his family have lived in Dana Point for 22 years. T

he release of Hans Petter Moland’s Cold Pursuit marks the most recent occurrence of a filmmaker remaking his own film: In Order of Disappearance (2014). One may assume this was a direct offer from StudioCanal after the original film did well internationally. It’s also allegedly the final “old man takes violent revenge on bad guys” action flick that Liam Neeson claims he plans to make. But enough backstory; how is the movie itself?

In mid-winter Colorado, Nels Coxman (Neeson) is a popular snowplow driver who has just won Citizen of the Year from his town locals. He lives comfortably right outside the city with his wife, Grace (Laura Dern), and son, Kyle (Neeson’s reallife son, Michael Richardson). When Kyle doesn’t return home from work one day, Nels and Grace learn that he’s died from a drug overdose.

Not convinced that his son is a drug fiend, he discovers that Kyle foolishly got involved with a cocaine cartel. Now he’s out to give the drug lords a taste of their own medicine.

Cold Pursuit is very much a dark comedy, like its predecessor, more than it is a straight, dramatic-action feature. The cast and crew are clearly having a good time and not taking it too seriously. English actor Tom Bateman as the cocaine kingpin has one of the year’s hammiest, flamboyant, Razzie-worthy performances. There are some decently morbid chuckles through the death sequences, while the sexual humor is mostly cringeinducing. If you’re into B-movie schlock with barely any character development or just like seeing Neeson do his usual schtick, you might be intrigued by Cold Pursuit. DP

How Do the Homeless Spend Valentine’s Day?

D

on’t laugh. When I went to a homeless center for the first time, I was surprised how much some wanted to find love or even to start a family. Equally, I was surprised how generous some were. When one doesn’t have money, one gets really creative to show love. That makes me feel selfish.

“If you reduce people to whether they have money or not, you miss the point of what a human being is,” Dr. Martín Burt, Founder of Poverty Stoplight, said during an interview by UCI. “Consider culture, family love, and high self-esteem. It’s very important to ask people, ‘What is important to you?’ We need to learn compassion and empathy; we need to listen.”

Compassion and empathy are also what Dana Point calls for to gain “positive participation in working toward solutions” on homelessness. Yeah, we need to “learn” and “listen.”

“They’re homeless because they’re lazy,” Cathie Opila said at a wine-tasting party in her ocean-view mansion, before she visited Family Assistance Ministries, a local food pantry and emergency shelter.

Then, she decided to volunteer because this gig could enable her love for food in a new way: handing food with her cooking tips to the homeless was fun and appreciated. Then, it became fulfilling. Then, five years passed, and she has been saying, “Anyone can become homeless.”

I do not want to think about that possibility for myself! But . . . reality is a different deal. UCI InSight Magazine has a collection of stories of homelessness in Orange County. I’ll share a couple:

• An ex-NFL player, musician and entrepreneur: “[Brian Andrews] sustained several hip and leg injuries from his time in football. He has received one hip replacement and is currently awaiting his second one. In November 2016, Andrews suffered a stroke, resulting in blindness in one eye.

His hand and vocal cords were also affected by the stroke. Due to this, he is no longer able to play guitar or sing his songs.”

• A father: “When asked about his motivation in life, [Christopher Black] states, ‘My son . . . and myself. This is COMMUNITY, not the life I wanted for SUSTAINABILITY, myself.’ . . . He really bePROSPERITY

I can go on with more stories. But let’s forget the homeless for a moment; instead, look inward. I volunteer because it gives me opportunities to see our shared humanity. Consequently, I become less bothered when people do what I wouldn’t do. Some say they become more compassionate and empathetic. So the gain is personal, and possibly lifetime. The salon space, which has been nestled on the corner of the Capistrano Surf Center Building on Pacific Coast Highway for years, was taken over and revived by Burton, and Ocean Blown Salon was born.

“I was kind of handed the opportunity by the previous owner, and (I was) told I would be crazy not to take it,” Burton said.

She took over the salon in July 2018.

Turning it into the revamped business it is now has been an uphill battle, she said.

The salon was given a full remodel and turned into an entirely new space. Tile became rustic wood paneling, walls were re-

moved to create an open floorplan, and what was once a dated reminder of the salons of the 1980s has become a serene, welcoming business that matches the view of Capistrano Beach you can see from its windows.

Burton, a lifetime resident of Dana Point and a Dana Hills alumna, has been styling hair for 31 years. She picked up the trade after attending Saddleback College, when her mother urged her to go to cosmetol-

ogy school, and she never looked back.

Although she loves doing hair, learning the ins and outs of running a business and the experience of remodeling a salon, her favorite part of the job is working with her clients.

“My clients make my day,” Burton said.

“It’s like I get to come into work and spend all day sharing stories with friends.”

Ocean Blown has stylists who cater to a wide variety of clients and can accom-

modate many requests. The clientele is split evenly between men and women, and Burton will soon have a male hair care line available.

Burton wants the Dana Point community to know that the salon is now much different than the dated space it once was.

“I want people to know how much we have changed,” she said.

Ocean Blown currently carries Loma, a sustainable, cruelty-free hair and skincare line. Loma isn’t made with harsh chemicals such as sulfates or parabens and has never been tested on animals. Their packaging and bottles are made from recycled material.

The business currently offers Loma daily shampoo, moisture shampoo, moisture treatment conditioner, daily conditioner and texture spray.

Burton has also created a shopping experience in Ocean Blown by placing furniture on consignment in her salon, featuring items provided by antique dealers from Orange, CA. Burton says that her biggest struggle so far has been finding new hairstylists and manicurists. Some hairstylists have stayed through the ownership change and remodel, but there are spots available for experienced stylists.

Holding Steady Consistency brings Dana Hills boys basketball to first CIF-SS quarterfinal since 2013

hese runs don’t come often for the Dana Hills boys basketball team, and the Dolphins are looking to make the most of it.

On Tuesday, Feb. 12, Dana Hills rode the energy from the home crowd and performances from Benn Carr and Harrison Wiese to defeat Rialto, 63-53, in a CIF-SS Division 4AA second-round playoff game at Dana Hills High School.

The Dolphins (17-10) advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2013 and out of the second round for only the second time in at least 15 years. The first time was a 2013 run that took Dana Hills to the Division 1A semifinals.

On Thursday, Feb. 14, the Dolphins attempted to earn that trip back to the CIFSS semifinals on the road at No. 2 seed Pacifica Christian (21-7) in Newport Beach.

Against Rialto, Carr, a senior, was involved throughout with 22 points and a strong defensive effort. Carr made 8 of 10 free throws and brought the energy while Dana Hills and Rialto were locked up early.

or the first time in program history, the Dana Hills girls water polo team will play for a CIF-SS championship.

The Dolphins went on the road on Wednesday, Feb. 13 and defeated Pasadena Poly, 11-9, at Pasadena City College in the CIF-SS Division 4 semifinals to advance to their first-ever CIF-SS Final.

It was only the program’s second CIF-SS semifinal appearance.

“He’s been doing it all year,” Dana Hills coach Tom Desiano said. “He really wants it. He wants to win. As he goes, so goes our team. He came to play tonight.”

Dana Hills was led in scoring by Wiese, a junior, who scored 11 of his team-high 23 points to put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter. Wiese and fellow junior Miles Ettinger were strong on rebounds all night, as well.

After last season’s downturn in league, a first-round playoff loss and a pair of nine-win seasons preceding it, the Dolphins are enjoying the best season in this senior class’ tenure.

Dana Hills’ 17 wins going into Thursday’s game were the most in a season since 2014. After 2014, the Dolphins posted seasons of six wins, nine wins, nine wins and 14 wins. The rebuilding is

Dana Hills finished the season strong and has carried that momentum through the playoffs.

In the South Coast League tournament, the Dolphins beat Aliso Niguel, 11-4, and upset El Toro, 14-10, to earn the league’s No. 2 playoff spot.

With the No. 2 seed in Division 4, Dana Hills dominated the first two rounds. The Dolphins overpowered Warren of Downey at home, 18-4, and won at Woodbridge, 12-2.

In the quarterfinals, which Dana Hills hosted at Tesoro High School due to pool size, Dana Hills outlasted Edison, 8-7, before defeating Pasadena Poly on Wednesday.

Coach Carrie Pierce called this Dolphins team a young group, and while there are plenty of sophomore contributors, it’s the senior core that has continued to lead the way.

Lauren Bellavia has been the team’s go-to for goal-scoring all season, with fellow senior Julia Reznicek not far behind as the No. 2 option. Sophomores Kat Besanceney, Paige Riester and Lucy Kao have also been very solid offensive contributors.

Kaylyn Pierce, Long Beach State commit and younger sister of head coach Carrie, has been the rock for the Dana Hills defensive efforts. The senior goalkeeper has stopped shots from all angles and distances and got the ball going the other

complete.

“We’ve been really consistent since day one,” Desiano said. “From the start of the season to this game, we don’t have too many highs or lows. We’ve been steady.

That’s something that we pride ourselves on; we don’t want to get tied up in the emotion.”

Voluminous new tome documents the history of San Onofre like never before

tanding in the back of my truck on Sunday morning, trying to pull off my wetsuit without being too exposed to the cold, a bundled-up guy carrying a handful of fliers approached me. My first thought was, “Oh, no, here comes somebody trying to convert me or get some money from me.”

Much to my relief, it turned out to be David Matuszak, smiling and happy to tell a little story. The flier he carried was for his new book, San Onofre: Memories of a Legendary Surfing Beach.

Unfortunately, I missed the book launch at the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center a few weeks ago, but I’ve had the opportunity to dive into the tome and start to explore it.

It doesn’t disappoint. It answers pretty much any and every question one could have about San Onofre. The term “indepth” doesn’t do it justice.

Considering San Onofre is one of the oldest surfing haunts in the continental United States, it seems only fitting that this timeless zone should have 1,500

t was announced this week that Dana Point’s Pat O’Connell will be the new commissioner of the World Surf League (WSL). His official title will be senior vice president, tours & head of Dana Point Times February 15-21, 2019

pages of stories and photos dedicated to it. Matuszak has put together what has to be the most thorough historical record of any surf spot in the world. His research and dedication to the years-long project is simply breathtaking.

“The scope of the San Onofre we know today is a fraction of what it was during the days of Rancho San Onofrio,” Matuszak writes in his book. “San Onofre now lies primarily along the coast stretching from Cotton’s Point in the north to ‘the Trails’ portion of the San Onofre Bluffs Campground in the south. In between, San Onofre is known both by onshore place names

and by its break names in the water.”

“Every little area of the beach has its own sub-culture…it’s just fascinating,” said Steve Pezman, publisher of The Surfer’s Journal.

Published by Pacific Sunset Publishing, there were 1,000 collector’s editions printed of San Onofre: Memories of a Legendary Surfing Beach. Matuszak estimates there are only a couple hundred of them left. The book is priced at $59.95. More information at PacificSunset.com.

For anyone who lives and surfs around San Onofre and has been even slightly interested in its storied history, this book is well worth the time and money. DP

“Words can’t describe the amount of respect I have for the WSL, Kieren and his team,” O’Connell said in a press release from the WSL. “From competitor to surfer rep to board member to commissioner, he really has given his all for surfing to get it to where it is today, and I couldn’t be more thankful.”

O’Connell landed in Dana Point when his family moved west from Chicago when he was young. After graduating from Dana Hills High School and having a successful surf career as an amateur, he spent time as a competitor on the World Tour. Since retiring from competition in 2004, he has been working as the VP of sports marketing at Hurley. A star in Bruce Brown’s Endless Summer 2, O’Connell’s a diehard Salt Creek regular and a distinguished

member of the Dana Point Surf Club.

“It’s super hard to leave my family at Hurley, as it’s been such a huge part of my life for more than 15 years,” O’Connell said. “I’ve had an incredible experience at Hurley, but I’m beyond excited for the opportunity to lead the competitive aspects of surfing and further elevate the sport. I believe in the WSL, I believe in what it can be, and I’m stoked.”

“I am delighted that Pat O’Connell has agreed to join the WSL to fill KP’s shoes,” said Sophie Goldschmidt, WSL CEO, in the same press release. “He has held a number of diverse roles within surfing, both as a competitor and on the business side, and his passion for the sport is infectious. He will have the support of an incredible team at a time when momentum is building across all surfing disciplines and taking the sport to new levels.” DP

raduating from Dana Hills High School last June, Bethany Zelasko is now diving into the next chapter of life. So far, it’s going pretty well.

In January, Zelasko won her first pro contest, the Shoe City Pro in Santa Cruz.

Earning $600 for her first-place finish, it was a big stepping stone for the Dana Point goofy-footer.

“I am so stoked to win my first comp of the year! I had an amazing time surfing and hanging with the girls,” Zelasko posted on Instagram. “Stoked on the prize money . . . it’s already been spent on a flight and gas.”

Up next, she’s flying to Australia to compete in four WSL Qualifying Series contests. The Dana Point Surf Club recently awarded her their first-ever scholarship to help her make ends meet on the road. She’s currently looking for sponsorship opportunities for further support.

Holding Canadian citizenship, Zelasko will head to Lima, Peru, this summer for the Pan American Games, where she will surf for Team Canada. If she drops the hammer and wins the Pan Am Games, we could see her in the Olympics in 2020.

Needless to say, this Salt Creek regular has a bright future ahead of her. DP
