Point-in-Time Study Seeks Volunteers Prior to Jan. 23-24 Count THE LATEST: Counting the county’s homeless population will take a concerted effort.

The goal of the now-annual Point-in-Time Count will take place Jan. 23 and 24, with the Southern Section of the county based at Family Assistance Ministries in Dana Point.

As the two-day mission gets closer, volunteers are still being sought.

Earlier in 2018, the county Board of Supervisors voted to contract with City Net, which will conduct the count and collect the data from it.

Volunteers will use devices given to them after training in order to detail the needs of the homeless residents, which can help direct them to health and housing services.

The data also tracks “boundaries,” or locations with significant distance to homeless populations, with public services.

WHAT’S NEXT: The first day of training is Jan. 12 for the Southern Section at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way in Mission Viejo. Shift in Leadership for Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group THE LATEST: After leading the Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group (DPSG) as President/CEO since 2013, Terry Rifkin has handed the reins to board member Mike Lipscombe. Rifkin will continue to serve as Chairman of the Board.

“Mike has demonstrated his deep commitment to our organization since he joined the board in 2012. He has great organizational and leadership skills, as well as a heartfelt dedication to serving our Marines, Sailors, our Wounded Warriors and their families,” Rifkin said in a press release.

According to the release, Lipscombe is a Marine veteran, having served in Vietnam in 1965 and 1966, flying with HMM 163.

“I’m for protecting the ratepayers and promoting affordability,” Brough said.

“The (California Public Utilities Commission) unilaterally impacts my constituents.

With $8 billion dollars a year in state mandates, that’s a 25 percent cost increase to ratepayers. I have constituents in Ladera Ranch paying $1,100 in utility bills, partly because they’re somehow considered to be in a coastal zone. That’s not right.”

As for preventing wildfires in the future, Brough says forests need to be managed better.

GI Bill and worked in the aerospace and defense industries until he retired in 2015.

He is a Life Member of American Legion Post 291, a member of the Marine Corps League Detachment 22 and past president of the Newport Beach 1st Battalion/1st Marine Foundation. He is also currently serving as vice president for Fisher House of Southern California.

The Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group is a nonprofit organization.

Representatives Look Ahead after Governor’s Inauguration

THE LATEST: Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, was sworn in on Monday, Jan. 8 as the 40th governor of California. Republican Senator Patricia Bates says she looks forward to working with his administration and politicians across the aisle to better serve her constituents.

Bates represents California’s 36th state Senate district, which includes Dana Point, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano. “(The Governor) is true to his promises, which is important for any elected official,” Bates said.

During Newsom’s inaugural speech, he proposed to expand Medi-Cal to undocumented immigrants. The comments came ahead of President Donald Trump’s speech Monday night appealing to Congress to fund a border wall, and amidst partisan debate over immigration reform.

Bates says she hopes to focus on citizens who need affordable healthcare.

“I need to be assured first that hardworking (citizens) who are struggling to make ends meet have access to healthcare. Expanding Medi-Cal comes with a $3 billion dollar price tag. We all want affordability, healthcare and a good quality of life for our constituents, but we disagree on how those goals should be attained.”

Bates previously served as a member of the Orange County Board of Supervisors from 2007 to 2014 and the California State Assembly from 1998 to 2004. She currently serves as the minority leader of the state Senate.

During Bates’ last term, she coauthored two bills on sober living homes and residential treatment facilities: SB 902 and SB 1290. SB 902 required background checks for licensed operators of residential treatment facilities and SB 1290 prohibited patient brokering, modeled after Florida’s “Patient Brokering Act.” WHAT’S NEXT: Both of the bills were held in the Senate Appropriations Committee.

But for her current term, Bates hopes to continue efforts to improve sober living home regulation.

“We need to be able to distinguish sober living homes from group homes, on a federal level. Better definitions will help improve accountability,” Bates said.

Bates also says she plans on reforming early-release regulations for felons classified as “serious felons” and are eligible for release, even after committing a violent crime. She hopes to introduce legislation that further scrutinizes who is eligible for early release. —LB

NY Times Shines Spotlight on CA Politicians and PG&E THE LATEST: After a wildfire in Paradise, CA killed 86 people, some state leaders seek to hold Pacific Gas & Electric financially accountable for potentially neglecting faulty equipment that could have sparked the blaze.

The New York Times reported on Saturday, Jan. 5 that as the Paradise wildfires consumed the town in November, a dozen state legislators and top power company officials were at an annual retreat at the Fairmont Kea Lani resort on Maui. The article reported that over the course of four days, officials discussed wildfires and how much responsibility the utilities deserve for the devastation, “if any.”

In a follow-up article published on Monday, Jan. 8, New York Times reporter Ivan Penn named State Assemblyman Bill Brough as one of the legislators at the retreat.

Brough represents the 73rd Assembly District and is embarking on his third term. He served on the Dana Point City Council from 2010 to 2014. The 73rd District covers much of southern Orange

Mayor Appointed to Serve on Revenue and Taxation Policy Committee THE LATEST: Dana Point Mayor Joe Muller has been appointed to the League’s Revenue and Taxation Policy Committee. This committee has the lead responsibility for recommending to the League’s board of directors policy positions on state issues involving finance administration, taxation reform, revenue needs and revenue sources. The appointment was announced by League President Jan Arbuckle, councilmember, Grass Valley.

As a committee member, Muller will play a key role in shaping the League’s policy positions on issues facing California cities and advocating for cities at the State Capitol, according to a press release.

“I am honored to serve on this committee and elevate our community’s role and participation in helping to shape the future of our state,” said Muller.

The leadership of the 2019 committee consists of Chair Jeff Slowey, councilmember, Citrus Heights, and Vice Chair Olivia Valentine, councilmember, Hawthorne.

“I am proud to have Joe join the League’s Revenue and Taxation Policy Committee on behalf of Dana Point’s residents,” League President Arbuckle said. “We will work together as a team, comprised of local front-line leaders from across the state, to ensure that the local perspective guides the outcome of state policy decisions.”

Wyland Art Classes Offered to Children The Dana Wharf Whale Watching and the Wyland Foundation have announced the details for the 2019 Wyland Dolphin and Whale Adventures, “Art Lessons in the Wild” children’s art program. The program begins Jan. 26 and continues every Saturday through April 27.

Children will have an opportunity to learn from the legendary marine life artist Wyland about how the ocean’s marine life has inspired him, and partake in an art lesson from Wyland himself via a video feed, according to a press release. This special adventure includes prizes for art submissions.

“When I first saw a whale in the wild, it was magnificent,” Wyland said in the press release. “The experience inspired me to become an artist, conservationist and marine life advocate. The Art Lessons in the Wild partnership with Dana Wharf gives us an opportunity to introduce the next generation to marine life off the Orange County coast and allows them to experience this beautiful ecosystem in a new and creative way.”

All art submissions will be personally judged by Wyland. The three judged art categories are 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 years old.

The art contest features multiple winners and one grand prize winner. The grand prize is a Wyland limited edition oil painting, valued at $1,500, entitled “Ancient Mariner.” This unique painting brings together the fiery sunset in the vein of his abstract expressionist work, with the anatomically detailed realism of his renowned sea life. The result is a breathtaking look at nature that is pure Wyland, according to a press release.

“We are honored to be partnering for our eighth consecutive year with Wyland, the acclaimed marine life environmental artist on this unique program,” says Donna Kalez, general manager of Dana Wharf Whale Watching. “Exploring the wonder of the ocean through Art Lessons in the Wild is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. man was transported to land and pronounced dead.

OCSD spokesperson Carrie Braun says the death did not appear suspicious but will be further investigated by a coroner. The man was reportedly with a group of individuals fishing on the jetty before his death.

The identity of the deceased will not be released until the coroner can confirm the identity and notify next of kin.

AARP Tax-Aide Program Offered at San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point Senior Centers Low-to-moderate income earners in San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point can work with certified tax counselors to prepare their 2018 tax returns beginning in February.

As part of the AARP’s Tax-Aide program, those who qualify for low-to-moderate income status can get free assistance from a team of trained and IRS certified volunteers at the Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano senior centers.

“Last year, our volunteer counselors prepared over 600 tax returns for low and moderate income taxpayers at the Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano senior centers during the tax filing season,” AARP District Coordinator Audie Sturla said in an email.

The due date to file 2018 tax returns is Monday, April 15.

The Dana Point Senior Center on Del Obispo Street will start offering the program on Fridays, starting Feb. 1. Anyone in Dana Point interested in receiving the free help can make an appointment by calling 949.496.4252.

The program be available at the San Juan Capistrano Senior Center on Camino

Del Avion every Tuesday, beginning Feb. 5. To make an appointment, those interested can call 949.493.5911.

Because of a limited number of counselors available at times, AARP is encouraging tax filers to make an appointment ahead of time.

The final day for the program in San Juan Capistrano is April 9 and April 12 for Dana Point.

Sturla said those coming in for assistance should be bring a copy of their previous year’s tax return, identification, proof of their social security number and tax records for 2018.

Coastal Art & Poetry Contest California students in five grade-level categories (K-1st grade, 2nd-3rd grade, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12th grade) are invited to submit artwork or poetry with a California coastal or marine theme to the annual California Coastal Commission’s Coastal Art & Poetry Contest.

apistrano Beach remains closed as OC Parks determines how to move forward after severe damage to its boardwalk, basketball court and parking lot.

Capo Beach and its parking lot have been closed due to weather damage as of Friday, Nov. 30. A portion of the boardwalk and steps collapsed due to high surf on Thursday, Nov. 29, with further damage seen the next day. OC Public Works installed more than 1,000 tons of rocks in place of the boardwalk, and officials have since advised the public not to enter the closed-off portion of the beach.

“We have done what we can to stabilize the area while we continue to evaluate next steps.

Right now our focus is on public safety, and we ask visitors to stay out of closed areas for their own safety,” said Marisa O’Neil, a public information officer for OC Parks.

Officials with the South Orange County Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation have been monitoring Capo Beach for the past few years. Rick Erkeneff, the chapter’s president, says people have often asked him whether the erosion and damage at Capo Beach are a byproduct of climate change and an increase to ocean levels.

“I’ve been asked that question a lot.

historically nourished. With the extensive droughts we’ve seen, there’s a lack of water and sediment flow from the bluffs.

With that lack of flow comes a lack of nourishment,” Erkeneff said.

As county officials work to determine how to proceed with the beach’s reinforcement, members of the community weigh in on the future of Capo Beach.

“The concrete is buckling. It’s been undermined, and everything would have to be torn out and the foundation would have to be reinforced,” Erkeneff said.

Beach. She applauds OC Parks officials for their diligence and communication with residents.

“They’ve been very responsive, receptive and cooperative. We’re all eager to have this beach back for everyone to enjoy,” Nelson said.

Nelson says she was sad to see the boardwalk go, but that in the future it would be more practical to install items that are more easily removed in the event of high tides or inclement weather. Nelson expressed concerns over whether the California Coastal Commission would prioritize parking lots over the beach, in an effort to promote beach access.

“What’s the point of beach access if there’s no room to put your towel down after you park?” Nelson said. “This beach is beloved, and we have a chance of rebuilding a really nice beach. It’s a little beach, but it’s ours. I’m passionate and I’m going to continue advocating that this beach continues to be for the community.”

It’s unclear when plans for Capo Beach will be available. High tides are expected to reach at least six feet throughout the month of January.

“As we move forward, we will have opportunities for public input. (You) will certainly know once we are at that point,” O’Neil said. DP

Letters to the Editor SPANISH IMMERSION AT RH DANA KRISTEN NELSON, RH Dana Elementary School

RH Dana Elementary School is one of the most beautiful campuses in the Capistrano Unified School District, and I am very excited to be the new principal of this school. Open since 1966, many Dana Point residents have vivid memories of growing up at RH Dana. I am excited to share that the school has been officially approved to offer an exciting Spanish dual immersion program.

As a veteran principal of CUSD and most recently the principal of Las Palmas Elementary School in San Clemente, which offers the same program, I am excited to help open this program for Dana Point and Laguna Niguel families to consider as an option for their children. This program in San Clemente has an annual wait list of 40-plus families and the desire to fulfill the growing need for bilingual programs led the district to expand it into Dana Point.

As a principal, I regularly interview individuals for all types of jobs within the education system. A great majority of the time, bilingual candidates go to the top of the list as we know this is a much-needed skill throughout our district. As a parent of a freshman in college, I recently experienced the highly competitive college entrance process here in California and was so pleased to hear from multiple universities that my daughter’s bilingualism moved her up in the acceptance pool.

Being bilingual is quickly becoming a skill set that will not only be greatly appreciated but soon to be expected by businesses and employers of the future.

Giving the gift of a second language to your child is one of the greatest gifts you can provide, and RH Dana wants to be here to help make that happen.

In addition to the Spanish language program, RH Dana Elementary School will also offer a robust environmental science program as our bilingual scholars grapple with real-world environmental issues and join in on the discussion of what the future of these issues will look like. There is no better location than in the heart of Dana Point, a community that treasures its ocean and harbor, to teach our kids about the importance of nature and keeping it healthy and

strong.

RH Dana Language and Science Academy is excited to welcome our first group of kindergarteners into the program beginning next fall. The school will also implement a mandatory uniform policy to simplify life for parents and enrichment Spanish for students in grades 1-5. We are hosting information meetings for anyone wanting to learn more. The dates and times for these meetings are Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 9 a.m. and Thursday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m.

MARIJUANA, SLOW YOUR ROLL TERRY GOLLER, Dana Point

There have been numerous articles on marijuana, some focusing on pot legalization and our border security that referenced research on THC use. They included great cognitive, motor, abnormal brain structure, neuropsychological and heart effects even after one day use.

Also, the studies stated that there was more tar in the lungs, heart and brain than in one cigarette. The research also reported that judgement and driving skills were impaired and that adolescent brain development was at a higher risk.

Disregarding all these concerns, may we cite the latest neurological studies on marijuana use and schizophrenia with a high percent of negative effects.

Earlier use of marijuana in the 80s had a potency of 5-13 percent. Not true today as potency has elevated up to 30 percent. Doctors are treating a new form of induced bipolar and psychotic impairments even after 28 days of abstinence.

The medical field also has increased concerns over the negative reports being revealed on vaping and the newest form in a Juul e-cigarette.

Considering the above concerns, it might be prudent to step back on the positive support for nationwide marijuana legalization. Let’s take a breath and evaluate the forth coming medical information that could assist in strengthening the physical wellbeing of so many.

ACTION NEEDED TO ADDRESS CLIMATE CHANGE TONY HAYS, San Clemente

A letter in the Nov. 29-Dec. 5 edition of the San Clemente Times described some of the things that can be done to reduce carbon emissions. Another important action is to write to your congressional representative (for most readers, Mike Levin) for the 116th session, expressing your support for H.R. 7173—the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act of 2018. This act has bipartisan support for “nudging” the economy toward zero-carbon emissions.

It does this by applying a fee on carbonbased fuels at the source. This fee is then distributed in an equitable manner as a dividend to Americans to spend as they wish. The fee will start at $15 per metric ton of CO2-equivalent emissions in 2019, progressively increasing to $100 per metric ton in 2030. Overall, the fee and dividend are revenue-neutral.

The report published by the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in October states that climate change poses an existential threat to human civilization as we know it, with the potential for catastrophic climate changes, unless action is taken now. Having the largest economy of any nation, the United States has the responsibility to lead this effort. Unless we lead, other nations are unlikely to follow. It’s time to step forward.

s January begins, Oscar contenders given limited releases in December now go wider into theaters. One of the films that originally had a little hype back in autumn, Karyn Kusama’s Destroyer, currently appears to be struggling to keep movie fans’ attention because of the mega-success of films such as A Star is Born and The Favourite. Destroyer’s production values are more modest and less flashy than those two hits and straddles the fine line between Oscar bait and gritty indie feature.

In modern-day Los Angeles, detective Erin Bell (Nicole Kidman) remains scarred physically and emotionally from an undercover assignment in Palm Springs back in 2001.

As seen through flashbacks, Erin and her partner, Chris (Sebastian Stan), investigate a gang of bank robbers, which becomes more intense and tragic than she expected. Now in the present, she has to deal with the gang leader, Silas (Toby Kebbell), possibly resurfacing and rekindling heists.

Destroyer is like Kidman’s Monster (2003) moment, with her character receiving a lot of unflattering, aging makeup for the present-day scenes.

Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi’s screenplay had potential, and Kusama has shown to be a decent director with Girlfight (2000) and Jennifer’s Body (2009). But weirdly enough, even though Kidman has been a consistent actress with quality performances throughout her four-decade career, she’s actually a bit campy here, particularly with the present-set parts in which it feels as if the makeup is working against her. Kidman delivers more subtle and more moving performances in the flashbacks.

Still, a barely decent indie flick is probably more engaging than a half-baked, schlocky studio B-movie released in January. DP

W

hen Rich Robinson, co-founder and guitarist of the famed rock group Black Crowes, assembled The Magpie Salute back in 2016, it wasn’t a certainty that the group would record original music.

Since the band’s inception, the group has performed numerous headlining shows, playing a catalog of Black Crowes songs, covers and other solo material Robinson and other bandmates had written.

Robinson said The Magpie Salute’s headlining performances over last year have been a celebration of songs from their previous works. But with last summer’s release of their first full-length studio album, “High Water I,” and the follow-up, “High Water II,” due out later this year, 2019 will be a celebration of what the band has become.

“This year, we’re celebrating the formation of the band, the new material we had,” Robinson told Dana Point Times days before the band headed to Japan for a series of shows. “Last year, we didn’t know we were going to be a band and have songs, and this year we do.”

After the psychedelic blues rock group returns from Japan, it will embark on a 27-date winter tour around the U.S. that includes a stop in San Juan Capistrano at The Coach House on Thursday, Jan. 17.

“It’s cool to get out and play the shows; really, that’s the whole purpose of getting out there,” Robinson said of touring.

Robinson put the group together in 2016, recruiting former Crowes guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Sven Pipien to join him for a Woodstock Sessions performance at Applehead Studios in Woodstock, N.Y. During the performance, the

ensemble played Crowes songs as well as covers and material from their individual solo acts.

The Magpie Salute comprises the three Black Crowes alums, as well as keyboardist Matt Slocum, drummer Joe Magistro and vocalist John Hogg, all of whom Robinson had worked with on other musical projects over the years.

“We were just really happy to start making music together again and anxious to get into the studio and start recording,” Robinson said of working with his former Crowes bandmates. “We had a lot of material between the three of us, and that’s why we made two records.”

Though The Magpie Salute continues to play some Black Crowes songs, the band will primarily focus on playing the new material from “High Water I,” Robinson said.

However, Robinson noted, fans hoping to hear any new tunes from “High Water II” will have to wait till the summer.

“No, we’ll wait till the record is ready to come out before we play from ‘High Water II,’ ” Robinson said when asked if the band will preview any new songs during the tour.

According to Robinson, “High Water II” is expected to be released sometime between August and September.

Tickets to see The Magpie Salute at The Coach House are $38 for general admission. VIP tickets are also available for an additional $79, which will include early entry into the venue and pre-show meetand-greet with the band. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the concert starts at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17.

Mission Accomplished in Pago Pago, American Samoa

M

y partner, Greta, and I disembarked from the Holland America cruise ship M.S. Amsterdam at 9 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 21, in San Pedro. The ship visited 34 ports and 14 countries in 82 days. The last foreign port visited was Pago Pago (pronounced “Pahngo Pahngo”), the capital of American Samoa.

In visiting Pago Pago, Greta and I had a goal. When Mark Flannery, of Fullerton, read that our ship was stopping in Pago Pago, he emailed that in 1975 his father was buried in the Satala Naval Cemetery in Pago Pago. Mark had never been to the cemetery.

I said to Greta, “Let’s try to find the cemetery where Mark’s father is buried.”

I mentioned our plan to Mark and asked for more information. He wrote, “My father, George Flannery, retired from the Air Force around 1970 and shortly thereafter took a job with the government of American Samoa. He died there. My mother stayed on the island for about five more years before returning to the mainland.

“I wasn’t asking you to look for my father’s grave,” Mark wrote, “but while you are there, I have a small request. Will you see if there is any sign of my mother, Ellen, in the same place? She died in Texas about 25 years ago and her ashes were sent to a friend in Pago Pago, who promised to put her near my father. You are the first people I know who have traveled to Pago Pago since then and, therefore, able to check this for me and my siblings.”

I said, “We know you didn’t ask, but we would like to do this for you. And it will give us a goal to achieve on our day ashore.”

Although not a state, American Samoa is a

Located on the earthquake-prone Pacific Ring of Fire, American Samoa suffered a terrible tsunami after a major earthquake in 2009.

Mark did research that helped us. He contacted an American Samoa government official about the cemetery and the location of George and Ellen Flannery’s gravesites. The official sent pictures, which helped me see what the cemetery looked like from the road and where the graves were located.

We were at the cemetery in five minutes. We paid the driver two bucks.

We found the markers immediately.

Greta placed the gardenia on George’s marker. I went into the adjacent jungle and picked a tropical red flower for Ellen’s marker. We spent an hour there taking pic-

Lady Washington is a replica of the original vessel that made unprecedented trading voyages around the Sea of Good Hope and the first American vessel to make landfall on the West Coast of North America in 1788. Over the years, the new Lady Washington has made several

appearances in major motion pictures such as the Pirates of the Caribbean, The Curse of the Black Pearl (as the role of The Interceptor), Star Trek: Generations, Once Upon A Time, and Revolution.

Lady Washington has been docked at Ocean Institute since Dec. 28, 2018, offering a glimpse of sea life during the 1700s.

Kelly Greenwood is the chief mate for Lady Washington. She says she grew up sailing, but fell in love with how unique tall ships are and what it takes to command a vessel.

Dolphin Determination Boys basketball starts league strong, looking to avoid last season’s downfall

ast season, Sea View League play saw the Dana Hills boys basketball team come apart.

The Dolphins had a tremendous start and were successful over the holiday tournament season to post a 12-8 record entering league action. Dana Hills then went 2-6 in league, with its two wins over last-place Laguna Hills and three losses by four or fewer points. The Dolphins went out in the first round of the playoffs and lost 11 of their final 14 games.

This season, Dana Hills finds itself in a similar spot to open league play.

The Dolphins won at the North/South Challenge and finished third in their division at the Rancho Mirage Holiday Invitational to hold an 11-6 record entering their league opener on Wednesday, Jan. 9.

Dana Hills looked determined to avoid last season’s fate and scored the first 17 points of the game on its way to win big over San Juan Hills, 62-34, and open its Sea View League schedule on the right foot.

hile there are certain fish out of play with the early-year closure, there is still plenty biting at Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said that the sculpin fishing has been very good. On the half-day trips, it’s a tough go with rockfish, whitefish and sheephead all closed until March -- they have to be released when caught -- but anglers have been getting great sculpin action. The fleet has also seen a surprising amount of yellowtail in the cooler water.

On Saturday, Jan. 5, the San Mateo found some kelp off the beach and hauled in 17 yellowtail. Woolley said that once the weather front goes though, they might get another shot at the fish in that area.

The Halibut Derby continues with not too much change in the last few weeks.

The opening-weekend 25-pounder still tops the leaderboard, and there are still only four catches above 20 lbs. Woolley said there is a good amount of bait along the beach that should get some of the halibut out of hiding.

Next up, Dana Hills takes on the league favorite, Tesoro, on the road Friday, Jan. 11. The Titans moved down from the South Coast League but may be the best team in either league. Dana Hills hasn’t won the league title since 2014 and 2009 before that, but the Dolphins still have their goals and expectations.

“To win league—100 percent,” Desiano said. “That’s it. It’s been a few years now, but I’d like to see us compete for one. I think we have the team to do it.” DP

OBITUARY

Richard Allen Seaberry

Richard Allen Seaberry, 85, died Monday, December 3, 2018 at his home in San Clemente, due to natural causes.

He leaves his wife of 66 years, Anne (Oberle) Seaberry; his son, Richard Seaberry Jr. and three daughters, Linda Robinson, Susan Coleman, and Katie Genschaw; his sister, Judy Smith; eleven grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Born in Los Angeles, the son of Harper and Claire (Haisch) Seaberry, he was a lifelong resident of Orange County, residing mostly in Westminster and San Clemente.

In his early years, Mr. Seaberry attended Huntington Beach High School. In 1951, he enlisted in the Navy serving on the USS Agerholm and USS Nicholas during the Korean War. He met his wife, Anne Oberle, at a friend’s home in Westminster and they were married in 1952 at Blessed Sacrament Church.

After six years in the Navy, leaving as a petty officer second class, Mr. Seaberry opened Big Al’s Barbershop in Westminster. He not only took pride in his business, but truly relished the friends he made in the community. He was very active in city events such as Founder’s Day, the Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the volunteer Fire Department just to name a few. He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves.

Eventually Mr. Seaberry sold his business and attended Long Beach State University, graduating in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in Recreation. In 1982, after selling their longtime residence of Westminster, Al and Anne Seaberry moved to San Clemente where they enjoyed their retirement years together.

A private service will be held in Huntington Beach at Saints Simon and Jude Church, and he will be interred at Riverside National Cemetery.

Small Steps, Big Impact How we can all be better stewards of our local beaches

O

ver the weekend, South Orange County was doused with a good rain. On Sunday morning, after a brisk surf at Uppers, I was walking up the beach to where I’d put my stuff and had the pleasure of watching a father and his two young children combing the beach picking up trash. It was the coolest thing I’ve seen down at Trestles in a long, long time.

The family wasn’t there as part of an organized beach cleanup. Dad didn’t come down with his surfboard to sneak a session in. They were there with the express purpose of cleaning up the beach. Dad was spending his Sunday morning teaching his two youngsters, who didn’t appear to be more than 5 years old, about the importance of leaving the sand happier than they found it and doing their part to make our beaches a better place to surf and enjoy.

Inspired, it prompted me to comb through the sand and do my own little mini-beach cleanup before I headed for home.

Some years ago, The Surfer’s Journal founder and publisher Steve Pezman explained to me how every surfer should make a habit of picking up at least three pieces of trash after a session. His point was that if everyone took the time to

remove just three pieces of litter from the sand, our beaches would be better for it.

For the most part, the beaches of San Clemente and Dana Point are in pretty good shape, but we could always do better. Plastic pollution in the world’s oceans has become an increasingly more serious problem in recent years, so much so that the Surfrider Foundation has made it one of its cornerstone issues. The foundation reports that plastics make up somewhere in the neighborhood of 90 percent of floating marine debris—80 percent of which ends up in the ocean via landbased sources (e.g., litter, urban runoff, illegal dumping). It’s estimated that

every year, 5 to 13 million tons of plastic enter our oceans from these land-based sources.

This is where the idea of “think globally, act locally” comes into play. When looking at the big picture, the problem is overwhelming, but just like the dad and his two kids out picking up trash on Sunday morning, we can all play a part in the solution. And it’s not as complicated as you may think. It just takes a slight tweak in some of your most basic daily routines.

You can start by ditching those singleuse plastic water bottles. Reusable water bottles aren’t hard to find, and they’re none too expensive, either. Use one.

Pretty soon you’ll wonder what the heck you were ever doing using single-use bottles in the first place.

Same thing goes with that cup of coffee you need to fire you up every morning.

When you roll into your favorite coffee shop, bring your own to-go mug. This will help reduce the use of plastic lids, non-recyclable cups and stir straws. And when it comes to packing your lunch for the day, try a reusable bag and reusable utensils and straws. Again, it’s about eliminating as much of the single-use plastics (sandwich and snack bags, plastic forks and spoons, etc.) as possible.

In December, I had the good fortune to spend some time on the North Shore of Oahu and learn about steps the local community is doing there to mitigate the impact of plastic pollution on their beaches. Just like San Clemente and Dana Point, the North Shore is one of the premier gathering places for surfers from around the world. If the beaches and water aren’t in good shape, it directly affects not just the surfers but a myriad of facets of the local economy.

“If I were to pick one issue that is undeniable and problematic in nearly every corner of the world, it is marine plastic pollution,” big-wave champ and San Clemente icon Greg Long said recently. “The good news within this plastic pollution epidemic is that every single piece of it is created by us. Therefore, it could be easily solved by us if we were only to accept responsibility, change our consumption habits and lifestyles and use alternative environmentally conscious alternatives.”

Nobody wants a dirty beach, and, thankfully, 2019 can be the year we all do something about it. DP

hen one grows up surfing in San Clemente and Dana Point, it’s easy to look at all the pro surfers who live in the area and think that’s a viable career path. Truth be told, the guys and girls who make it as pro surfers make up less than 1 percent of the surfing population. The rest of us have to figure out how to strike a work/surf balance.

Enter Noah Hohenester, a former NSSA champion. In 2017, Hohenester was named the San Clemente High surf team MVP as he went on to win both the NSSA California State Championship and NSSA

National Championship titles. He also graduated with a 4.1 grade-point average.

Today, he’s an 18-year-old freshman at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. A member of the surf team, he’s currently rated number one in the NSSA Collegiate rankings, while Cal Poly is the No. 1-rated college surf program in the country. Hohenester is also wisely putting grades before waves.

“I’m just trying to focus on school for the next four years and do my best for the Cal Poly SLO surf program,” Hohenester said during an interview with the Dana Point Times.

Whatever the future may hold in store for Hohenester, in or out of the water, he’s sure to be prepared for whatever life may throw his way. DP
