Five things Dana Point should know this week Authorities Investigate Homicide after Dana Point Drummer Found Dead THE LATEST: A Dana Point musician was found dead in a cul-de-sac in Anaheim in the early hours of Saturday, July 20. Authorities say 48-year-old David McCabe suffered injuries consistent with blunt force trauma.

McCabe was the drummer in the punk rock band, Knightenders, and had reportedly been devoted to the punk rock music scene for most of his life.

Fred Jones, the bassist and original founder of Knightenders, says he had known McCabe for 20 years and had played in other bands with him before Knightenders.

“He was a guy who loved punk rock. He walked the walk, talked the talk. That was his life,” said Jones. “And that’s what he was doing the night he was killed.”

McCabe had reportedly gone to the music venue Doll Hut in Anaheim the night he was killed. At 2:55 a.m. on July 20, officers were sent to the 1500 block of West Center Street after a passerby discovered a deceased man on the ground.

Detectives are not commenting on possible motives at this time.

WHAT’S NEXT: Knightenders had previously scheduled a show at Doll Hut for Wednesday, July 24, which is just a few hundred feet from where the drummer had been discovered dead. His bandmates plan on following through with their planned shows as long as a new drummer can learn the songs, in part to honor McCabe’s memory. “(McCabe) put so much energy into this band,” Jones said. “He loved music, he loved going to shows. He would have wanted us to continue playing.”

District Attorney’s Office, has declared her bid for the 2020 election.

Eustice is the second Republican challenger to announce a campaign in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations made against incumbent Assemblymember Bill Brough. Mission Viejo Councilmember Ed Sachs announced his run in July.

“I had heard speculation of allegations against Brough before, but I had never heard details of a specific incident or a specific name,” Eustice said. “When I read about what Lisa had said, detailing the incident and having filed a complaint soon after, I was enraged. . . . This is a stain on the Republican Party.”

On Monday, June 17, Orange County Supervisor and Chairperson Lisa Bartlett spoke at a Republican Party of Orange County’s (OCGOP) Central Committee meeting about an alleged incident that occurred in 2011, while both Bartlett and Brough served on Dana Point City Council. She cited the incident, in which she alleged Brough put his arms around her (while intoxicated) and suggested they go somewhere to get a drink, as reason for the party not to endorse Brough in his bid for reelection in 2020.

Brough denies the allegations and has since rescinded his application for OCGOP’s endorsement.

In Eustice’s release announcing her campaign, she vows to “restore integrity to the 73rd Assembly seat, fight to protect families and push back against stains on the Republican brand.”

“Brough has abused the power of his office,” Eustice said. “It’s time we restore the integrity of the Republican Party.”

Eustice is a former trustee for Western Placer School District and currently oversees 220 employees with a $159 million budget for Orange County District Attorney

Todd Spitzer’s office. She says her experience in establishing the Bridges at Kraemer Place homeless shelter in Anaheim and her experience in state and local government is what sets her apart as a top candidate.

Judge Finalizes OC Board’s Settlement Agreement for Homeless Lawsuits THE LATEST: Judge David O. Carter on Tuesday, July 23, finalized a settlement agreement the Orange County Board of Supervisors had proposed earlier this month, resolving a pair of homeless-related lawsuits filed against the county last year.

“This is the most significant settlement concerning homeless issues, certainly in the county and perhaps the state,” Carter said at the outset of Tuesday’s courtroom hearing in Santa Ana. Carter later called the settlement a “game-changer” and a “role model” for other counties in the state to follow.

Components in the agreement include requirements for the county to set up “Standards of Care,” advertise the availability of clinical assessments for treatment programs and resources, and provide Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations at county-contracted shelters in the north and central regions.

Board Supervisor and Chairperson Lisa Bartlett said the finalization of the agree-

ment marked “a really momentous day for the county and all stakeholders involved.”

Bartlett, who represents the county’s Fifth District, which encompasses several South County cities, also stated that the county will work with the South OC cities to get shelters in that Service Planning Area (SPA).

“The county stands ready to also work with the South County SPA,” Bartlett said, adding, “We’re very amenable to stepping up, from the county perspective, with additional services, with financial resources to make sure that we get something up and running when the cities step up to the plate and create some shelter capacity or something else in South County so we can have a complete system throughout the whole county.”

In a statement made regarding the settlement, Dana Point Mayor Joe Muller says the city will continue to coordinate daily with outreach, police services, the public works department and the city manager’s office to address homelessness.

“What is needed is county leadership providing solutions in South County,” Muller said. “The county has spent millions of dollars delivering services in North and Central County, including the establishment of regional navigation centers, shelters and mental health crisis centers, while at the same time rejecting proposals for South County facilities.

“While the county is patting themselves on the back, the settlement leaves South County cities on their own, and we deserve better. We are one Orange County—not three.”

The lawsuits that the now-effective consent decree settled stem from the removal of a homeless encampment in the Sana Ana riverbed last year and do not address similar litigation several South County cities are currently facing.

This past February, the cities of Aliso Viejo, Dana Point, Irvine, San Clemente, and San Juan Capistrano were named in a lawsuit filed by Orange County Catholic Worker, which alleges the county and those cities haven’t done enough to provide homeless shelters.

According to the settlement document released Tuesday, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department must also develop policies and procedures relating to the enforcement of the anti-camping and anti-loitering ordinances that meet the requirements of Martin v. City of Boise on county-owned property.

Last year’s Boise ruling bars cities and authorities from enforcing anti-camping ordinances unless “adequate indoor shelter” for the homeless is offered.

Prior to enforcing anti-camping ordinances against a homeless individual, authorities will first need to work with System of Care personnel in order to place the person in an appropriate shelter within his or her respective SPA, the agreement stipulates.

“To any individual who declines the offered placement, OCSD will, where feasible, give the person a warning and an opportunity to immediately relocate to a location where the person may lawfully be present before issuing a citation and/or effecting an arrest.”

Such policies, the agreement notes, could be used in cities OCSD contracts with, provided that the city has met the requirements under the Boise decision.

In South County, OCSD currently contracts with Aliso Viejo, Dana Point, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.

WHAT’S NEXT: The cities of San Juan, Aliso Viejo and San Clemente filed a motion earlier this month for the court to dismiss OC Catholic Worker’s suit against the South County cities. PCH Celebrates 90 Years This Month THE LATEST: July marks the 90th anniversary of the Pacific Coast Highway in Dana

Point. The highway, previously known as the Roosevelt Military Memorial Highway, was the freeway that connected Canada to Mexico continuously. Its opening also included the official lighting of Dana Point’s city lanterns.

The highway was opened by thenCalifornia Governor Clement Calhoun Young, who was pictured digging open the highway barrier, connecting both ends of the freeway. Young also switched on 400 city lights in order to officially illuminate Dana Point with its signature lanterns, according to research by Keith Johannes, a committee chair on the Dana Point Historical Society.

“When Theodore Roosevelt died suddenly in January 1919, there was an outpouring of respect for his military knowledge. He had negotiated for years with Japan concerning their relations with Korea, China and Russia, and was very concerned about Japan imperialistic actions, so a highway was needed to move military equipment up and down the West Coast,” Johannes said.

In July 1919, Congress finally funded the construction of four separate Roosevelt Military Memorial Highways, one of which included the Pacific Coast Highway, as well as three other highways throughout the United States.

“Over the years, the highway through Dana Point has had many names, adjustments and improvements,” Johannes said.

“In the 20th century, the highway was called Coast Road, then later Roosevelt Highway, US 101A, Pacific Coast Highway and State Route 1.”

But even earlier, 250 years ago, the dirt trail was used by the Portola Expedition, and parts of that trail became El Camino Real, which has its own history, running through the Capistrano Beach area of Dana Point toward the Mission San Juan Capistrano and eventually merged with what became historic Highway 101. The El Camino Real Association, formed in 1904, placed its first iconic bell-shaped marker on the trail in that year, many of which are still visible today.—Haley Chi-Sing

New Glasspar Restaurant Looks to Bring Local History and Flavor Together near Dana Point Harbor THE LATEST: Rob Wilson has spent the majority of his 33-year career working as a chef at five-star restaurants, including the Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel and the Montage in Laguna Beach. He’s planning on bringing that experience along with an energetic and polished feel as executive chef of the new restaurant, Glasspar—a seafood restaurant, oyster bar and tap room in Dana Point.

Currently under construction across the

street from the harbor, with an opening scheduled for this fall, Glasspar will feature a 24-seat bar in the middle of the restaurant, with 10 beer taps and 10 wine taps. A majority of the seafood and tap beers and wine at Glasspar will be locally sourced.

“Our goal is to keep it as local as possible,” said Wilson. “Our philosophy when we first started this project was Californians supporting Californians.

It’s going to be a chance for us to do what we like to do and support our local area.”

Wilson named the restaurant Glasspar after the noted maker of fiberglasshulled boats out of Costa Mesa from the 1940s through the 1970s. The Glasspar name is his way of bringing his own childhood memories and Southern California history together, full circle.

“The boat I grew up fishing on right here in Dana Point Harbor was an 18foot Glasspar,” said Wilson. “It was my dad’s boat.”

WHAT’S NEXT: A small selection of Chef Rob’s menu items for Glasspar can be sampled on Aug. 17-18 at the Pacific Wine and Food Classic in Newport Beach prior to the official opening of the restaurant this fall.

Cetacean Sensation Dana Point is Officially the “Dolphin & Whale Watching Capital of the World”

ana Point is now, officially, the “Dolphin & Whale Watching Capital of the World,” thanks to two local women who took on the initiative a year ago.

Donna Kalez, of Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching, and Gisele Anderson, of Capt. Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari, teamed up despite the rivalry between their whale- and dolphinwatching charters in Dana Point Harbor.

Kalez’s father, Don Hansen, is credited for being the first to offer whale watching in Orange County. Hansen began taking whale watchers out to sea off the San Clemente pier in the 1960s as a side venture to his fishing business. In 1971, he founded the first whale watching company in Dana Point, and Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching became the first business in Dana Point Harbor. Kalez and her brother, Mike Hansen, took over the business in 1994.

Capt. Dave Anderson had been living aboard his sailboat in Dana Point in 1995, when he first had the idea to start taking passengers out to see whales and dolphins. Over the course of five years, he used his camera footage to create an award-winning documentary, Wild Dolphins & Whales of Southern California.

His wife Gisele Anderson is the Vice President of the business.

The 2014 Los Angeles Times column “Rivals spar over the spouts off Dana Point” illustrated the lengths each of the businesses would go, to offer their passengers the better whale watching experience, and dramatized the relationship between the local leaders in whale watching.

“Before these so-called ‘whale wars,’ we were friends,” Gisele Anderson said.

“I told my husband, ‘I’m calling Donna!’

And we sat down, we talked, and we decided to move forward.”

WHALE WATCHING DESTINATIONS ABROAD

Gisele Anderson said she realized Dana Point had a marketing opportunity when she went to Australia with her husband. The promotional advertising for whale watching blew Dana Point out of the water, she said.

watching. They really invest in their marketing on a national level,” Gisele Anderson said. “Whenever there’s a new boat added to a whale watching company, the prime minister comes out. It’s a huge deal. I thought, ‘Why can’t Dana Point do something like this?’ ” Gisele Anderson says she came to find out the whale watching she experienced abroad was underwhelming in comparison to what was offered in Dana Point.

“In talking to the captain, I learned that whale sightings really only occur three or four months out of the year due to inclement weather. There are only a couple hundred dolphins, and about a third of their trips end up getting canceled,” Gisele Anderson said.

WHAT SETS DANA POINT APART

Dana Point waters see about 40-50 whales daily passing through during peak migration season. The migration of the gray whale begins in December and continues through March, as they travel from feeding grounds in the Bering Sea to warmer waters in Baja, where calves are born.

Experts believe gray whales travel

so closely to the Dana Point shoreline, because the Dana Point Headlands serve as a landmark for their journeys. The abundance in sightings inspired the annual Festival of Whales, the longest-running celebration of the gray whale. The festival celebrated its 48th year in March, drawing thousands of visitors.

Other whale species, such as blue whales, fin whales, humpback whales and minke whales, can be seen yearround. There is also a local population of about 450,000 dolphins—more dolphins per square mile than anywhere else in the world.

Sightings of the “dolphin stampede,” the phenomenon of a massive dolphin pod traveling at high speeds by diving in and out of the water, has also put Dana Point on the map.

“With all Dana Point has to offer for dolphin and whale watching, it made sense to trademark it as not just a destination but as the capital of the world,” Gisele Anderson said.

TAKING ON THE TRADEMARK

After setting aside their rivalry, Kalez and Anderson developed the idea to trademark their concept. They pitched Page 5

the undertaking to various entities, including City of Dana Point, Ocean Institute and Visit Dana Point.

“We soon realized that the best way to get things done was to do it ourselves,” Kalez said. “And two women were able to get it done.”

“Donna is very well-connected and is a strong leader in the community. We were able to use that strength in our networking efforts,” Anderson said. “My role was to take on the research.”

Kalez and Anderson worked with trademark attorney Michael Markos, who explained to them that they would need to create an entity for the application process. It just so happened that each of the women had her own piece of the puzzle. Kalez had owned Dana Point Whale Watching Corp, but it had been sitting dormant. Anderson had owned the domain danapointwhalewatching.com.

Anderson and Kalez combined their resources, and their trademark application was approved and finalized by the U.S. Patent and Trademark office. The website is now up and running to promote Dana Point’s dolphin and whale watching excursions.

“This is our gift to the community. We put in the effort, time and resources to get this done, and we want the community to really take advantage of this trademark,” Kalez said. “We want the city, the county and state of California to be able to claim Dana Point as the Dolphin & Whale Watching Capital of the World.”

Orange County Supervisor and Dana Point resident Lisa Bartlett commends Anderson and Kalez for their accomplishments.

“All who live in Dana Point and its surrounding areas have always appreciated our sea-life, and it is a true honor to now be internationally recognized as the whale and dolphin watching capital of the world. I applaud Donna Kalez and Gisele Anderson on their tireless efforts to make this recognition a reality.”

Kalez and Anderson envision that the trademark be utilized by the State of California, as well as receive national recognition.

“Wouldn’t it be cool if the state used this trademark to say California is home to the Dolphin & Whale Watching Capital of the World? If we could get that kind of support in the way that Australia rallies for their industry, it could really open up opportunities for our community,” Kalez said.

As for what’s next, motorists will soon see signs on the freeway with the trademark logo after Anderson secured the required approvals. The pair will also take on the task of creating a national “Dolphin & Whale Watching” holiday.

“It’s been a great feeling,” Kalez said.

“We were able to work together for this huge undertaking, put away a lot of our differences and trust each other. There’s no limit to what we can accomplish.” DP danapointtimes.com

Latinx Surf Club Holds Surf Day Event at Doheny State Beach A new surf club has emerged to bring a community to those who don’t have one.

Dr. Cassie Comely, Vanessa Yeager and Giselle Carrillo founded the Latinx Surf Club about a year ago, but it had been in the works for a couple of years. The club’s kickoff event united Latinx surfers for a day of surf at Doheny State Beach on Saturday, July 20.

“Latinx” is a gender-neutral term used in lieu of Latino or Latina in reference to Latin American culture or identity.

Carrillo and Yeager met through Instagram and became fast friends, united in the goal to help others make it to the ocean. Both from East Los Angeles, they recognized it’s hard to get to the ocean and to jump into a sport that doesn’t provide a whole lot of representation.

The two connected with Comely, also from the Los Angeles area, through her dissertation about Mexican American experiences of exclusion and inclusion in predominantly white male sporting spaces.

Comely also focused on the ways Mexican Americans form communities and construct more inclusive sporting practices and spaces.

“A lot of people that I talked to for my dissertation were also looking for a community,” Comely said. Most of the individuals Comely spoke to were either Mexican American or identified as on the Latinx spectrum.

“We don’t exclude anyone in our group, but we are trying to raise awareness about a particular group that is understudied and underrepresented in the community,” Comely said.

The trio stages events, similar to the one held on July 20, at beaches throughout Southern California, as well as providing boards, encouragement and a community for those seeking one.

Emergency Response Training for Beachgoers in Dana Point

Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) issued a statement on Tuesday, July 23 after Governor Gavin Newsom announced new leadership at the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the release of the “DMV Strike Team” report.

“The Governor’s actions are steps in the right direction to help fix the DMV,” Bates said. “I wish its new leaders well as they confront the problems that have made the department a symbol of government dysfunction over the past few years.”

Bates had introduced SB 57, a proposal for an independent DMV audit and to make voter registration an opt-in process.

In a June statement, she said that the DMV is dealing with many problems.

“Having people question the integrity of our election system should not be one of them,” Bates said previously. “(The) rejection of an independent audit only adds to the mistrust that many Californians have toward their state government and their frustration with the DMV.” In her July 23 statement, Bates said Cali-

Letters to the Editor A CASE FOR HUNTINGTON BEACH’S DESALINATION PROJECT JILL CAGLE, OC Wise – A Nonprofit Dedicated to Efficient Water Use

Dear Editor: The article "Desalination, Huntington Beach v. Dana Point" by Hoiyin Ip published on July 5 has several serious inaccuracies, thus misinforming the public and requiring correction.

Article states: Huntington Beach (HB) "would use an open ocean intake with wedge wire screens that are ineffective in protecting marine life."

Fact: Extensive environmental analyses have been conducted by leading marine biologists and state regulatory agencies finding that the impact on marine organisms will be insignificant. The State Water Board has determined that the wedge wire screens will eliminate the impingement (trapping) of all forms of marine life.

Article states: "The water would be privatized."

Fact: The HB Project is a public private

partnership. One of the most important benefits of a public private partnership is that it protects ratepayers. The facility will be privately financed, and if it fails to be built on time or on budget, or successfully operated, consumers are not on the hook for the cost With the HB facility, ratepayers only pay for water that is delivered. Public water agencies control the water and will determine where, when and how the water is used.

Article states: "Poseidon's construction cost will be $1 billion. It will produce 50-million gallons of water per day. The water cost from Poseidon's Carlsbad facility is about $2,400 per acre foot, which is used as an indicator for Huntington Beach."

Fact: The correct cost to Orange County ratepayers of the HB water is $1,625 per acre foot. That breaks down to less than one cent per gallon. This is also an apples to oranges comparison of the project costs. The $107 million estimated cost of the Doheny facility should be compared to the estimated $600 million construction cost of HB. The HB plant will provide 10 times the water of the Dana Point facility at six times the price.

proof and diversify our water resources.

Only seawater desalination offers Orange County true climate resiliency, and both HB and Doheny are unique and necessary projects.

Poseidon is a privately run company that would oversee construction of the project.

ora Lum, also known as Awkwafina, has to have one of the biggest “glow-ups” in modern pop culture. She gained a viral cult following with her popular rap songs from 2012-14, was cast as comic relief sidekicks in blockbusters such as Neighbors 2 (2016), Ocean’s 8 (2018) and Crazy Rich Asians (2018), and now she is proving her range with dramatic acting in one of the most memorable independent releases this summer: Lulu Wang’s The Farewell.

While Crazy Rich Asians was a cute romcom about family visiting Singapore for a wedding, The Farewell is a more somber piece on a more eccentric family visit to China. Billi (Lum) discovers that she’s been rejected for a scholarship on the same day she learns her grandmother, Nai Nai (Zhao Shuzhen), has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Rather than tell Nai Nai, the whole family is planning on allowing her to live her last months in ignorance and reunite in their hometown of Changchun for Billi’s cousin’s wedding, which serves as a cover-up.

The Farewell is loosely based on Wang’s own upbringing, as well as her family’s experience during a similar situation years ago. This is one of the instances in which the old advice cliché, “write what you know,” is done correctly. The movie is a great collaboration of Wang’s personal script and direction combined with Lum’s impressive lead performance.

Billi is one of the most relatable and realistic characters this year in cinema, and Wang, in only her second full-length feature, demonstrates she has a bright future. The final scene is a bit unexpectedly misleading, but it doesn’t taint the viewing as a whole, fortunately. DP

iblings fight. They bicker. And they certainly get on each other’s nerves.

That’s just the way most families are.

When siblings are in a band together, there can be a bit of friction. And sometimes that friction is just too much for any one of them to handle—case in point: Oasis.

However, when it comes to The Bacon Brothers, a rock group led by Michael and Kevin Bacon, they’ve proven that blood is thicker than water.

“Well, I think that with the exception of when we get on each other’s nerves, which is rare, but it happens . . . it’s more canceled out by the fact this is a business, and when you’re in a business with your brother, there’s an inherent level of trust that goes into it,” said Michael, who sings and plays the guitar and cello for the band.

While Kevin is the most recognizable of the duo, as an accomplished actor in several hit movies such as Apollo 13 and A Few Good Men, Michael has earned the respect of Hollywood in his own right. Michael, the elder of the two, is an Emmy-winning composer who has scored several documentaries and audiobooks.

Together, Michael and Kevin have put out eight albums, the latest of which, The Bacon Brothers, was released last year. The band is rounded out by Paul Guzzone on the bass and back-up vocals, Joe Mennonna on keyboards and the accordion, Tim Quick on lead guitar, the mandolin and backing vocals, and Frank Vilardi on drums.

The band has been together since 1997, when they debuted their first album, Forosoco. However, the musical journey of Michael and Kevin actually started when they were just boys growing up in Philadelphia, Kevin explains.

“Well, Michael was a born musician; he started playing when he was a little boy, started playing the cello and the oboe . . . that’s what he did from the time he was a Dana Point Times July 26-August 1, 2019

little boy,” said Kevin, who also sings and plays the guitar and percussion. “My thing was listening to my older brother . . . seeing him, listening to him and looking at that and saying, ‘That sounds like fun.’ ” “So I started to have these melodies and these words in my head. I would sing them to Michael, and he would turn them into songs, and that sort of led to ‘Well, let’s do that again,’ ” Kevin said.

The Bacon Brothers are currently spending their summer traveling the U.S. for their Shaky Ground Tour, which is named after a line from one of their songs, “A Road We Know Too Well.”

“I think we always like to have the tour be a little ironic, that there’s aspects to it that are not like ‘this is just all fun’ and ‘this is all easy,’ ” Michael said. “And I think that all the tours sort of reflect that sort of thing.

It’s not like a black-and-white kind of thing, but something more of a gray area, which I think ‘shaky ground’ describes.”

While out on the road, Kevin said fans can expect the band to play a lot of material from their most recent album, in addition to performing and experimenting with new songs.

Last month, The Bacon Brothers released a new single entitled “Play,” but the brothers couldn’t state for sure whether they’re ready to release a full-length LP just yet.

“Were getting close enough to have stuff for another album. I guess the question is whether or not we do it as one album or we continue to put out some singles,” Kevin said. “We have to dig more, think a little bit more about that. We could probably put out 10 songs and then after the 10th one is out, put out another album, so we’ll see.”

GUEST OPINION: On Life and Love After 50: By Tom Blake

Best Senior Movie Date in 21 years

L

ast week, my life partner, Greta, asked me to go to a late-afternoon movie with her. She loves movies.

In 21 years together, we’ve enjoyed lots of movie dates.

“What movie?” I asked.

“Pavarotti,” she replied. “On Wednesdays, the matinee at the Regency Theatre costs just $6.50 for seniors.”

“Sounds like opera to me,” I unenthusiastically replied, in that opera isn’t my favorite type of music. However, I didn’t want Greta to go alone, so I agreed to go.

Producer Ron Howard created a masterpiece. It’s a documentary. The footage and music are authentic Luciano Pavarotti. There isn’t a stand-in actor pretending to be a tenor.

I related to the movie for three personal reasons.

The first reason: In the movie, there is a July 7, 1990 concert in which Pavarotti, who is Italian, joins for the first time the other two great tenors of his era: Spaniards Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras.

That event, held in Rome at The Baths of Caracalla open-air arena, was so spectacular, the trio thereafter became known worldwide as “The Three Tenors.” The record album from that concert became the best-selling classical music album of all time.

At the movie, immediately after that performance by The Three Tenors, a woman seated behind us was so inspired, she stood up, shouted “Bravo!” and applauded.

For me, that Baths of Caracalla concert brought back memories from 49 years ago. On August 24, 1960, during the Rome Olympics, while traveling through Europe for 85 days in a VW bus with four other guys, we attended the opera Aida at The Baths of Caracalla.

That 1960 opera lasted 3 ½ hours, during which the USA satellite “Echo” was visible in the sky as it flew over twice. I also remember four-horse chariots, camels and elephants on the enormous stage.

The second personal reason I enjoyed the movie is it reminded me of my mom.

Only a couple of days before seeing the movie, I had sorted through an old picture book while working on my family’s genealogy. I came upon a concert ticket stub from a concert by The Three Tenors Dana Point Times July 26-August 1, 2019

in San Jose, dated December 29, 1999.

I asked my sister, Christine, about that ticket stub. She said that she and her boyfriend at the time, Bill, took Mom to the concert. Mom often said it was one of the greatest treats of her life. The tickets were so expensive, Christine had crossed out the price with a felt-tip pen, so Mom wouldn’t know how much Bill and Christine had spent. Seeing the movie made finding that Three Tenors ticket stub a nice memory of Mom. The third personal reason I related to the movie was because Pavarotti reminded me somewhat of Johnny Cash.

Before readers gasp in horror that I would include those two men in the same sentence, let me reassure them that I feel Pavarotti was one of the greatest singers of all time.

Because Johnny was a great country music singer, whom I personally knew and worked with for two years, Pavarotti’s unique, powerful voice and charisma reminded me of Cash’s unique, powerful voice and charisma.

And speaking of voices in Pavarotti, Bono of U2 had an important part in the GUEST OPINION movie. He and Pavarotti

By Tom Blake did a duet together, initiated by Pavarotti. Bono was extensively interviewed as well; his appearance enhanced the movie.

There will be critics of this movie.

Opera critics may think that The Three Tenors, by joining together, bastardized classic opera. Plus, the movie showed Pavarotti performing with other rock stars later in his career.

Also, others will feel that Pavarotti’s infidelity damaged his reputation. They may be right. And that behavior was wrong.

But Pavarotti was a great humanitarian and donated millions to charities. In addition, he is arguably the greatest tenor of all time. His love of all people and his infectious enthusiasm for life are evident throughout the movie.

I went into the movie thinking, “Oh, no, two hours of opera.” I walked out thanking Greta for asking me to go, relishing the memories Pavarotti ignited in me. In our 21 years together, it was one of our best senior movie dates ever.

Strong summer continues along the coast, at Catalina

s the summer rolls along, the strong bass fishing continues up and down the coast for Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said the bass fishing is hitting on the half-day and three-quarter-day trips. Flylined sardines got the best results, but the artificial baits are also catching. The water temperature has been solid at 70-71 degrees, and the water color has settled nicely.

At Catalina Island, the Fury has continued its run on yellowtail. Anglers pulled in yellowtail on the front and back side of the island. Fly-lined sardines were the way to go out there as well, and the bass again followed suit. Trips to San Clemente Island have produced similar results.

here are 11 contests on the WSL’s Championship Tour. After the sixth stop in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, San Clemente’s Kolohe Andino is ranked No. 1 in the world and has taken ownership of the coveted gold leader’s jersey.

“Being in the World Title race means there’s a lot of extra noise, and I feel a lot more people are watching,” Andino humbly said after taking the pole position.

After beating Brazilian rookie Deivid Silva in the quarterfinals of the Corona Open J-Bay last week, Andino overtook the No. 1 position from John John Florence, who suffered a knee injury in Brazil last month and is expected to be out for the rest of the year.

“Honestly, I think the gold jersey has been a bit of a burden; no one has taken it and ran with it since there’s been a gold jersey,” Andino said.

Coming up less than a half-point short against reigning world champion Gabriel Medina in the semifinals, Andino had to settle for third place in the contest, but the points he was awarded for the result were enough to put him atop the WSL ratings. The last time a surfer from San Clemente contended for a world title was Shane Beschen in 1996. He finished that year ranked second to Kelly Slater, who incidentally was surfing in the J-Bay contest

ne of the best things about writing the Grom of the Week item is not just being able to shine light on some of our communities’ brightest little legends, but also seeing them grow up and accomplish great things.

Cannon Carr’s not grown up yet, but he’s definitely not the pint-sized grom who used to pull into overhead barrels on three-foot days at Riviera. Recently turned 13 years old, the kid’s been on the up and up all year long, and it’s epic to see the path he’s blazing.

this year at the age of 47.

“It’s still a long year, and we’re technically at the halfway point, and I’m just stoked with the beginning of my year,” said Andino, careful to not get ahead of himself and stay focused on what’s yet to come.

Putting together the best season of his career, consistency has been the key to Andino’s success this year. He started the year with a second-place finish at the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast of Australia. He earned another runner-up result at the Margaret River Pro, and followed that up with a third-place finish in the Oi Rio Pro. But throughout his career, Andino has struggled to find his rhythm at J-Bay and has had a string of poor performances there. This most recent result not only reverses that trend, it has to give him considerable momentum and confidence.

“J-Bay has always been a really difficult wave for me to surf, so I’m just really

stoked to come away with a keeper result,” Andino said. “The people who surf this wave well are really confident; they’re not nervous if they are not going to make the wave, even if they just do some big turns, because the wave is really fast. But you can still sit back and do some big turns.

I’m just trying to enjoy it and have fun.

We’re at one of the wonders of the world if you’re a surfer. I’ve been spending a lot of time in the water, and I’m just having fun.”

As Andino noted, there’s still a lot of surfing to be done this year. The next world tour stop will take him to the South Pacific for the Tahiti Pro. Held at Teahupoo, it is one of the heaviest, shallowest waves in the world. Last year, Andino made the quarterfinals at the contest, and the year before, he made the semifinals. He’s been going to Tahiti for years and should feel right at home in the warm, blue barrels.

From there, Andino will have the Freshwa-

To kick the summer off, Cannon earned himself a fourth-place finish at the U.S.A. Surfing Championships at Lower Trestles.

But he was just getting started. He then went on to finish third in the Open Boys division of the NSSA National Championships in Huntington Beach.

Most recently, Cannon just made the trip down to Australia to compete in the Skullcandy Oz Grom Open, where he once again made the final. The surf was pumping with long, right-hand walls on offer.

Putting all of his Trestles experience to good use, he was absolutely ripping.

It’s going to be epic to see what he does next. And younger brother Carson isn’t far behind. DP

Hoping to slow Andino down will be parttime San Clemente resident Filipe Toledo.

Currently sitting in second, he’s considered the best small-wave surfer in the world and is sure to contend all year long.

“As for looking for areas to improve, I have to work on these legs. You might have seen they look pretty skinny out there. I gotta do more squats,” Andino said, always looking for ways to elevate his game.

Next week, as the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach gets underway, Andino, Griffin Colapinto and Patrick Gudauskas are listed among some of the top seeds in the contest. Huntington Beach’s Kanoa Igarashi will be attempting to win his third Open title in a row. The U.S. Open begins on July 27. DP
