Coffee Importers Celebrates 40 Years This Month THE LATEST: This month, Coffee Importers in Dana Point celebrates its 40th year of business in the Dana Point Harbor.

Coffee Importers was started in 1979 when Jim Miller bought the business with his wife, Michelle, and his parents, Bob and Bea. “It was just the beginning of this whole cappuccino/espresso movement that Starbucks and Diedrich (Coffee) had taken on,” Miller said. “My parents were often visiting family in Denmark, where cafés were popular. They thought, ‘Why don’t we start that?’ ” Coffee Importers has seen several changes over the decades. In 1981, the Millers purchased the business across from the coffee shop to open the now-famous Scoop Deck Ice Cream Shop. A deli, bagel shop and juice bar was opened inside Coffee Importers in 1995. Miller says it’s all about how a business adapts to how demands shift. He says that his menus, concepts and business space have changed to mirror what customers are looking for.

Miller’s hope for the coffee spot was that it would be a place of gathering for friends, family and the community. About 20 years ago, Coffee Importers’ owners agreed to host “coffee chats” regularly when Bob and Pat Fairbanks of the Dana Point Civic Association approached them with the idea.

The events featured community discussions with guest speakers regarding issues that impacted Dana Point. Coffee chats continue to be held monthly.

WHAT’S NEXT: To celebrate the 40th anniversary, Coffee Importers will host a celebration on Friday, June 14 at 3 p.m. on the outdoor patio. The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce announced the change in sponsorship on June 3 in a press release regarding the longstanding Thanksgiving Day charity event. The release stated that the group will help provide the funds necessary to promote and stage the annual fundraising challenge and expo, which traditionally attracts more than 17,000 participants to Dana Point from throughout the United States. The former sponsor for the event was Monarch Beach Resort.

The Dana Point Turkey Trot is the nation’s sixth-largest Thanksgiving Day run in the country. The race event holds two 5K races, a 10K and the Kids’ Gobble Wobble runs.

Harbor Partner Bryon Ward to Speak at Coffee Chat THE LATEST: The Dana Point Civic Association will hold a meeting on Friday, June 21 at 8:30 a.m. at Coffee Importers. The guest speaker will be Bryon Ward of Dana Point Harbor Partners, who will update everyone on all of the construction projects planned for the revitalization of Dana Point Harbor commercial core.

In a previous interview with Dana Point Times on May 3, Ward said that the Harbor Partners plan to be transparent and inclusive with the community regarding plans for the revitalization.

“Once the community is accepting and has an understanding of what we’re building, then we proceed in getting that

approved and getting building permits,” Ward said.

Ward began his career in commercial real estate in 1984, when he joined Grubb & Ellis Company, one of the largest commercial real estate brokerages in the nation. Ward joined Burnham USA as a partner in 2007, where he has been responsible for strategic portfolio oversight, property acquisitions and development. Charles Merritt Found Guilty of McStay Family Slaying THE LATEST: After 85 days of trial and six days of deliberation, a jury has found Charles “Chase” Merritt guilty of four counts of first-degree murder in the McStay family slaying, according to a press release from the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office. The verdict was reached on Friday, June 7, and read by a city clerk on Monday morning in a San Bernardino courtroom.

Merritt, 62, was charged and convicted of the murders of his former business partner, Joseph McStay, 40, his wife, Summer, 43, and their two sons Gianni, 4, and Joseph Jr., 3.

The McStays lived in San Clemente before moving to Fallbrook, where they resided until the family of four vanished from their home in February 2010.

Their remains were found three years later, roughly 100 miles away in the Mojave Desert, buried in shallow graves.

Merritt, who was convicted of bludgeoning the family to death before disposing of the bodies, was arrested in November.

THE LATEST: A proposed bond measure to upgrade several schools in the Capistrano Unified School District’s western facilities region could provide Dana Hills High School with several new buildings, including a theater and second gymnasium.

CUSD has been considering placing a bond measure on the March 2020 Primary Election ballot that’s meant to renovate schools in Dana Point, Aliso Viejo and Laguna Niguel, collectively referred to as the Western School Facilities Improvement District (SFID).

The proposed bond, if passed by the region’s voters next spring, would levy $34 for every $100,000 of assessed home value, providing the district with $293 million in proceeds to renovate schools in the Western SFID. Potential plans to construct new buildings at Dana Hills High and renovate existing structures, including the installation of air conditioning in the school’s gym, is estimated to cost more than $138 million, according to Chief Facilities Officer John Forney.

For new buildings specifically, the district estimates needing $76.57 million to construct a new theater, second gym, pool and new buildings to replace portables. Renovations, estimated to cost roughly $60 million, would include roofing, electrical, lighting, paint, flooring and furniture, to name a few.

The bond proceeds would also go toward improvements to R.H. Dana Elementary School, which was built 50 years ago. Currently, the district projects spending nearly $3.6 million for upgrades at R.H. Dana.

For the entire Western SFID, CUSD is budgeting roughly $299.86 million to make upgrades and construct new buildings at the schools. Forney, who presented the information to the Board of Trustees on Wednesday, June 12, notes that the estimates are based on a preliminary scope and without an official master plan.

WHAT’S NEXT: CUSD’s proposed timeline of moving the bond forward is targeting an early October date for determining whether it should be placed on the March 2020 ballot. Ribbon-Cutting Held for Surf Icon Phil Edwards Dana Point city officials and stakeholders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the installation of Phil Edwards’ monument on Pacific Coast Highway near the intersection with Camino Del Obispo on Friday, June 7.

At age 15, Edwards famously charged big Killer Dana in 1953 and introduced the fledgling surf scene to the “cutback.” By the end of the 1950s, he was one of the sport’s first bona fide stars. In 1961, Edwards became the first person to successfully ride Pipeline, the famous surf reef break on Oahu’s North Shore, where filmmaker and friend Bruce Brown was on hand to document the moment. In 1963, he won Surfer Magazine’s inaugural Surfer Poll Awards, and Hobie released the Phil Edwards Model, the first signature surfboard model.

Edwards was present for the event, where Mayor Joe Muller, City Manager Mark Denny and longtime friends spoke on behalf of Edwards’ legacy.

This is the second monument erected for Watermen’s Plaza, following the unveiling of Hobie Alter’s statue in December.

The park will pay tribute to local icons who contributed to the surf industry.

OCTA Approves $1.5 Billion Budget The Orange County Transit Authority Board of Directors approved a budget of more than $1.5 billion for the upcoming fiscal year, which will go into effect July 1.

According to OCTA chairman Tim Shaw, the budget is outlined to improve the lives of the thousands of citizens who live, work and commute in Orange County. The plans for the new budget are to invest into the streets, freeways, transit and transporta-

tion programs that are currently active.

The budget will also provide more funding to the Bus 360 program that was implemented in 2016. OC Bus 360 is a comprehensive program that increases routes to high-demand areas and has optimized efficiency throughout local counties.

Other initiatives of the new budget include I-405 and I-5 Improvement Projects and funding to improve the quality and safety of streets and roads.

The FY 2019-20 budget was designed to deliver innovative and sustainable transportation to Orange County. For more

A Future Investment

Community Members are Eager for Improvements to Doheny Village Amid Budget Approvals

hile the city’s budgets were approved in a relatively short Dana Point City Council meeting that lasted less than an hour, the funding and future of Doheny Village posed as one conversational hurdle.

To date, $727,139 has been deposited toward Doheny Village beautification.

Three developments in the city are estimated to be bringing in an additional $535,000, and the city is anticipating upwards of $3 million in estimated development impact fees. However, during budget discussion in the June 4 meeting, Councilmember Debra Lewis proposed setting up a separate savings account devoted to Doheny Village.

“We’ve all been saying Doheny Village is our priority for capital investment,” said Lewis. “I would propose we have a Doheny Village portion set aside specifically for that in our community investment account, so that we can show Doheny Village we are starting to build that fund. If we start saving specifically for Doheny Village, they can see we are serious about investing. “ With Councilmember Paul Wyatt absent, the remaining members disagreed for a need to create another account.

“We did 10 workshops on this, and we started this months and months ago by creating the Doheny Account to set aside future Town Center development impact fees for Doheny,” said Councilmember Jamey Federico, who represents parts of Doheny Village in District 3. “We’ve said Doheny beautification is important, and that’s why it’s the one project we earmarked money for, so I’m not going to rehash this.”

The budgets for the next two fiscal years went on to be unanimously approved.

Following the meeting, Lewis elaborated that her concern behind creating a new account was that the money deposited into a proposed reserve would be legally protected and designated for Doheny Village only.

“Councils have been telling Capistrano Beach for years that Doheny Village is a priority,” Lewis said. “Putting all the money the city has set aside to date for Doheny Village into a legally restricted,

single-purpose reserve, as well as agreeing on a mechanism to fund the reserve each year, would guarantee progress towards upgrading what I believe we all see as a neglected area of Dana Point—that is, not serving the needs of our residents nor meeting its potential for bringing in revenue to the city.”

Toni Nelson, of local grassroots group Capo Cares, applauded Lewis’s effort to propose solutions for the area’s need for development.

“We need to be more anxious about taking action,” Nelson said. “The protected account was a good idea. Maybe the city should consider financing or working with developers. But there are some immediate needs, such as adequate lighting.

We need to be able to feel safe.”

Nelson echoed frustration that city leaders have assured residents that investment in Doheny Village is a priority, throughout campaigns extending back years.

“The Doheny Village planning process is ongoing,” said City Manager Mark Denny. “At the completion of the recommended changes of the zoning code, staff is committed to going back to the community to re-review the list of community infrastructure improvements that they’re interested in. There’s far from a consensus of the residents, business and property owners for what they’d like to see. Our goal is to build that consensus and bring it to the council.”

The city’s comprehensive planning efforts for Doheny Village have been in the works since 2010. The city selected ROMA Design Group to prepare the Doheny Village Plan and conduct public outreach. ROMA prepared a draft of a plan in 2013. In 2015, city council selected

Opticos Design, Inc. to build off that draft and prepare language for Doheny Village to be incorporated into the city’s zoning code. Opticos was chosen for the firm’s experience in form-based code, according to city staff.

While Opticos provided a working draft of a form-based code, there were public concerns that the code was too prescriptive.

“We started meeting with the working group and decided we could accomplish the goals of development without formbased code,” said Community Development Director Matt Schneider.

The Doheny Village Working Group meets once a month and is comprises of the Doheny Village Merchants’ Association (DVMA), a group that formed in late 2016 to address concerns with a proposal on parking, zoning and development standards for the Village. Residents, business and property owners, as well as city officials, attend the meetings. Senior Planner Belinda Deines has overseen meetings and gathered input from the community with help from Schneider.

“Going through the process of meeting with the community has involved a lot of dialogue and education,” Schneider said. “Yes, we might have been able to expedite the process by hiring a thirdparty design group. But there’s no guarantee that the community would support the results. This way takes more time, but it’s the best way to ensure the community’s input is factored into decisions along the way.”

A multitude of structures and property in the area are legal nonconforming—buildings had been grandfathered in, but remodels and new projects would

often mean larger scheme demolition, reconstruction and higher expenses in order to comply with city standards.

“This often deterred property owners from making improvements. And there is a high concentration of lots and private property owners in the area, so this led to a lot of properties not getting the upgrades they’ve likely needed,” said Larry Robinson, a residential and commercial property owner in Capistrano Beach who is also a member of the DVMA. Since October 2017, DVMA has been meeting with local stakeholders and city officials on a monthly basis to develop a community-driven plan for Doheny Village’s future as part of the Doheny Village Working Group.

The working group is not required to adhere to the Brown Act; therefore, there are no recordings of the meetings available. The public, however, is welcome to attend.

The group’s guiding principles instruct that the planning process be driven by the community and that there be recognition of nonconforming uses. The principles also promote connectivity and access to the beach and the preservation of the village’s character (industrial, mixed-used, commercial zones and a variety of housing types such as mobile homes and apartments).

In March 2018, city council instructed the group to prepare a Draft Zoning Code Update for city council to review; prepare a Zone Text Amendment in order to provide flexibility for property owners to invest and update their property; prepare a beautification plan; and suspend work authorized by council for the Doheny Village Plan Update EIR contract.

In October, city council approved the zone text amendment, providing an incentive for property owners to improve structures without requiring conditionaluse permits and allowing demolition of 75% of the existing structure. These changes are currently pending review by the California Coastal Commission. “(The DVWG) is following a consensus-based process, and that doesn’t follow a traditional timeline to be placed on the group reaching consensus,” said Denny.

“We want the majority of the residents, business and property owners to be in agreement. . . . We need to know what we want to pay for first.”

Lewis says that finding the vision that most can agree on is the first step.

“Some priorities change as leadership changes. The residents in Doheny Village have been vocal about needed changes, and my hope is that future councils and leaders in Dana Point recognize that,” Lewis said.

Striking a Chord with Joe Robinson

T

his month, I want to share yet another example of how music is a vital element of Dana Point’s identity and tradition. For 18 years, founder Tim Johnson’s Lord of the Strings concert series has hosted world-class guitarists such as Peppino de Agostino, Laurence Juber (Paul McCartney’s Wings), Supertramp’s Carl Verheyen, and many others.

These artists play everything from jazz, blues and rock to country and Hawaiian, all right here in Dana Point (as well as Mission Viejo).

The next Lord of the Strings concert is Friday, June 21 at Dana Point Community House and features Australia’s Got Talent winner Joe Robinson, an incredible talent who also won the Australian National Songwriting Competition at the age of 13. Born in remote Temagog, New South Wales, Robinson essentially taught himself to play guitar using DVDs and the internet, after outgrowing his teachers’ skills. Robinson toured Australia with his mentor, Tommy Emmanuel, and at 18 years old was invited to Nashville by Emmanuel.

Robinson has played in Guitar Army with Robben DANA POINT Ford and Lee Roy Parnell ROCKS and is also a part of RodBy Anthony Small ney Crowell’s acoustic trio.

Robinson’s new album, Undertones, was written and produced by Robinson and recorded at Nashville’s Castle Recording Studios, purportedly built by Al Capone. All of the songs come from a deep place and really resonate when he performs them. I spoke to Robinson by phone from his home in Nashville.

“My musical heroes were so encouraging and so generous to me. Now, I get to do a lot of master classes and workshops everywhere from middle schools in the Bronx to Berklee College of Music. It’s all enriched my life and music so much,” said Robinson, who also has a new online course that features him and his mentors.

Regarding Lord of the Strings, Robinson said, “Tim has curated a wonderful concert series and has built an audience that really loves and appreciates the intricacies of what a musician like myself does.

It’s such a pleasure to play for an audience Page 7

that’s so honed in and, therefore, hears an intimate and heartfelt performance. It feels like music is built into the culture in Dana Point, and it also reminds me of home, as I grew up on the coast.”

Tim Johnson shared the story of how Lord of the Strings came to be: “Tina and I moved back to Orange County after a few years living in the small town of Benicia, which had a vibrant live music scene.

It turned out that Peppino D'Agostino was our neighbor, just a block away. We became good friends, and I was fortunate enough to become a student of his, and he introduced us to many of his favorite international musicians. When we moved back to OC in 2002, we noticed a void. I decided to do a show for just my friends and business associates with Peppino as the headliner. That first show was a sellout, and people were raving about what they had just seen and heard. We had so much fun that I decided to do another. I recruited some of my favorite internationally famous guitarists to come to Dana Point and perform. I had to be persistent, but we were successful. Now, in our 18th year, we’ve done over 500 shows and are as excited as ever about continuing to present some of the best acoustic guitar players touring today, with no end in sight!”

With regard to the musical tradition here in Dana Point and South OC, Johnson said, “I grew up playing surf music in the area with a garage band. I’ve been hanging out in Dana Point since the early ’60s. My neighbors growing up were the legendary surf band, The Sandals, who created the soundtrack to Bruce Brown’s classic surf movie Endless Summer. Dana Point continues to evolve in many ways, and my favorite way to contribute is with music.”

Band of Souls, a local band, released its debut album, Satellite Soul. Vocalist and songwriter Tamar Gugasian and guitarist/ producer Evy Levy’s eclectic songs are being played worldwide on stations that feature the band’s various styles, including rock, jazz and rap. W

hen the topic of legendary fashion design comes up, you typically hear the usual names: Valentino, Dior, Gucci and Yves St. Laurent. One name that was huge back in the mid-20th century, but has simmered a bit over the years is Halston. Why is this? Documentary filmmaker Frédéric Tcheng profiles the man’s life and career as the once most successful American-born fashion designer in the 1970s through his new feature, simply called Halston.

From 1961-1981, Roy Halston Frowick had an influential reputation as the go-to designer for high-class fashion.

He instantly became a household name for creating the famous pillbox hat First Lady Jackie Kennedy wore, and he made hot pants popular in the U.S. in 1969. His models included Iman, Marisa Berenson, Jerry Hall and Pat Cleveland. He had superstar clients such as Cher, Liza Minnelli, Cybill Shepherd and Bianca Jagger. Then things started spiraling downward when his brand merged with JC Penney in 1983 and, ultimately, to his premature death in 1990.

Tcheng is the director of the previous, well-received fashion design documentary Dior & I (2014), and here he picks up where he left off, but with a bit more personal slant.

The best parts of Halston are when we get to hear about his rise from a small-town, Midwest upbringing to the New York high life, as well as all of the personal memories from the famous models and actresses. The second half of the documentary focusing on the designer’s darker moments drags a bit, as does the unnecessary addition of millennial fashion writer/ actress Tavi Gevinson for narration.

But the film is interesting enough as an intro to a cultural icon. DP danapointtimes.com

On Stage at The Coach House: Crystal Bowersox

rystal Bowersox is used to performing songs in front of a live audience.

The 33-year-old singer-songwriter, who is back on the road this summer and will be debuting some new material, particularly enjoys interacting with her fans during and after the shows.

“I really enjoy meeting people after the shows and hearing stories from people about how my music has played a role in their lives or maybe helped them get through something difficult or even just helped them celebrate something like a wedding or love,” she said.

But lately, Bowersox has embraced a new form of song writing and performing: musical theater. For the past several months, she’s been putting together a show about her life entitled “Trauma Queen,” which she says is the most personal piece of work she’s ever written.

“With my songs, there is a little bit of ambiguity with some of it, or it’s just slightly vague so that other people can insert their own experience,” Bowersox said. “With this show, ‘Trauma Queen,’ it is my story from start to finish and all the struggles and things that I’ve dealt with.”

When the Dana Point Times spoke about the project with Bowersox, who was the runner-up during American Idol’s Season 9, she admits she was hesitant about exposing all of the details of her life.

“The thought of spilling all my secrets on a stage in front of people was not appealing to me,” she said.

Bowersox teamed up with playwright Willy Holtzman and songwriter Marty Dodson for “Trauma Queen” after the three had previously worked together on the musical Play it by Heart in 2017.

Bowersox said Holtzman approached her about writing the show to chronicle her life, pointing out a lack of up-to-date info on her Wikipedia page.

“I said, ‘You’re right, there’s a lot of stuff in-between the lines,’ ” she recalled telling Holtzman. “He came over to my house, we talked for eight hours. A couple weeks later, he sent me a rough draft, and we started working for about a year, sorting out the details and creating the storyline.”

“Then I worked with Marty Dodson, who has had many No. 1 hits, and he’s just such a wonderful songwriter,” she said.

“I’ve been working with him on the music

for the show.”

Through the process of writing “Trauma Queen” and digging into her past, Bowersox said she experienced a sense of healing.

“It’s been deeply, deeply personal; it’s been very healing to go through everything—just the songwriting is for me, as well,” she said, adding that by telling her story, it also gives those watching “permission to feel and forgive themselves for things” in their past.

If all things go according to plan, the show will premiere in Franklin, Tenn., this October.

“The first show is going to be in October; it’s all happened pretty quickly, and I’ve just been very blessed to meet an amazing group of people that helped me make it happen,” she said.

Between now and the show’s official debut, Bowersox will be playing several shows around the country this summer, including a stop at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano this month. Because it’s been a couple of years since putting out her last album, Alive, which was recorded live, Bowersox said she’ll be testing some new songs during the upcoming shows.

Aside from debuting the new material and telling “really bad, stupid jokes,” as she normally does during sets, Bowersox wants to connect with her audience, playing her music in a more intimate setting.

“When people come to the show, I want them to feel like they’re in my house and in my living room and we’re just hanging out, and more often than not, people are talking to me from the audience, and there’s no wall between me and them,” she said. “That’s how I want it to feel, and I want people to leave feeling happier than when they got there.”

Meet and Greets popular social activities for seniors

W

hen I owned Tutor and Spunky’s Deli in Dana Point, we started a Senior Singles Meet and Greet event that convened one night each month. It became a popular event for older singles.

During the two years we held the events, at least 30 singles over the age of 50 became 15 committed couples. Many of them are still together.

After I retired, the meet-and-greet events sputtered out. My partner, Greta, and I were traveling a great deal, and we couldn’t put the effort into continuing to host and promote those events.

But I didn’t retire from writing this “On Life and Love after 50” column for the Dana Point Times, San Clemente Times and The Capistrano Dispatch. Readers would sometimes ask, “Why don’t you restart those Senior Meet and Greet gettogethers at the deli?”

When the deli sold again in April of this year, the new owners, Samantha and Elena, asked if Greta and I would be willing to host the Meet and Greet events. We told them we’d give it a shot. On May 22, more than 100 seniors attended (and not all of them were singles; some were married or in committed relationships).

One couple, Fred and Joanne, who met five years ago at the first Meet and Greet,

arrived early.

Another couple at the event, Jack and another Joanne from Dana Point, explained how they had met. Joanne had read in this column about the importance for seniors to get off the couch, out of the house, and involved in activities they enjoy. She said those words inspired her to begin riding her bicycle again. Jack also liked bike riding, and that’s how he met Joanne. They ended up taking a trip to Amsterdam, the city of bicycles, where they did lots of bike riding.

I was amazed at the number of widows and widowers who joined us. Some were in their early 50s, such as Cluny, who has his own business.

Sisters Jackie and Judy, both widows, enjoyed themselves. Judy lives in San Clemente, and her sister Jackie, who used to live in South County, was visiting from Chicago.

Jackie said she’d still be in town in late June, and she and her sister would come if we had another gathering.

Greta’s two sisters, DeDe and Jeanne, who both live in San Juan Capistrano, were at the event. And two of Greta’s married children stopped by to see how their mom was doing.

Her daughter, Terri, lives in San Clemente.

In prior years, Tony, Greta’s son in San Juan Capistrano, was the bartender at the events. At the May event, when people saw Tony behind the bar, they’d say, “Oh, my gosh, you’re back pouring the wine; how great to see you.” (I noticed he’d wink and

seniors, now that we’re older, to interact with people. Some become too isolated, and that isn’t healthy. The Senior Meet and Greets provide an opportunity to make new friends and to socialize.

So we hope to see a bunch of our readers on Thursday, June 27, at Tutor and Spunky’s Deli in Dana Point. Beer and wine will be five bucks, but the food will be complimentary. And while the focus is on senior singles, we encourage married couples and committed couples to attend, especially the ones who met at one of the events years ago. We love hearing about senior dating success stories.

GIRLS ATHLETE OF THE YEAR Drae Fresenius | Volleyball/Tennis Dana Hills senior Drae Fresenius is always part of a pair.

Drae Fresenius has a twin sister, Stila, and both played for the Dolphins girls volleyball and tennis teams. The two play together as a setter and hitter on the volleyball team, but they do play apart on the tennis team. Even there, both are half of different doubles pairs.

However, no matter where she was, Drae Fresenius was always a standout.

For her efforts and accomplishments, Drae Fresenius has been chosen as the Dana Point Times’ Girls Athlete of the Year.

Fresenius was also unique in competing for the volleyball and tennis teams in the same season. There are plenty of dual-sport athletes at every school, but that’s usually done with a fall sport and a spring sport or winter sport. Fresenius tackled both at the same time.

On the volleyball court, Fresenius was vital to Dana Hills’s success as setter.

Fresenius’ passes would dictate where the ball would go and who was getting the kill. Her sister, Stila, was the main kill force for the Dolphins, and the twin connection was undeniable, with Drae

routinely contributing at least 40 assists per match.

The Dana Hills girls volleyball team posted a 27-7 overall record and advanced to the CIF-SS Division 2 quarterfinals. Fresenius was named first-team All-South Coast League and played in the Orange County all-star game last month.

On the tennis court, Fresenius had two doubles partners during a successful season. In the regular season and team playoffs, Fresenius paired with Megan Delery as the Dolphins rolled to their 20th consecutive league title.

Dana Hills continued on to its 12th CIF-SS Final in program history, where the Dolphins took runner-up honors.

In the South Coast League tournament and CIF-SS individuals, Fresenius was paired with Dana Hills’ No. 1 singles player, Courtney Swift. Fresenius and Swift took a first-round bye in the league tournament and swept through the quarterfinals and semifinals to set up an all-Dana Hills final against Stila Fresenius and Malia Riveria. Drae and Swift won the league title, 6-0, 6-2.

Fresenius and Swift dropped only two points in the CIF-SS Sectionals and advanced to the round of 16.

Fresenius will play volleyball at San Jose State next season and was named to the Dana Hills Wall of Fame.

Dana Hills senior Kaden Likins could be spotted as a water polo player from a mile away.

He’s got the bleached-blonde hair from many hours in the sun and chlorinated pool water. He’s got the triangle-shaped body with the strong upper body from more hours spent treading water and winding up for his blistering shot on goal. The water polo player “look” is one earned with plenty of training.

Likins doesn’t just look the part; he plays it perfectly well.

For his efforts and accomplishments, Kaden Likins has been chosen as the Dana Point Times’ Boys Athlete of the Year.

When the Dolphins took to the pool, the ball went through Likins, offensively.

Likins would take the ball nearly every possession and had two options.

He could either take the shot if the defense somehow slept on him or if he had an angle, or he could draw the defense to him—his skill always made him a threat—and pass it off to a teammate for a better opportunity. Likins was also the go-to penalty shot-taker for Dana Hills.

It worked very well for the Dolphins,

who posted an 18-12 record overall and took a strong second place in the South Coast League at 6-2. In the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs, Dana Hills was the No. 2 seed and had to battle.

Despite the seeding, Dana Hills had to play a wild-card match. Dana Hills went on the road in the first round and pulled out a one-goal win, 9-8, over Los Alamitos. In the quarterfinals, the Dolphins grinded out another one-goal win, 5-4, over Damien.

Dana Hills advanced to the third CIF-SS semifinal in school history, but lost another tight match, 8-6, against Mira Costa.

Likins was named South Coast League Co-MVP and also earned first-team All-CIF Division 2 honors.

Likins now moves on to play his college career at UC San Diego.

“I’m excited to spend the next four years at UC San Diego,” Likins said at Dana Hills’ Signing Day ceremony. “I’m looking forward to it. Another four years of playing the sport, both athletics and academics, to succeed and do my best.”

Likins called his Dana Hills career “a time I’ll never forget.”

Off the field, Likins could often be seen as a prominent member of the “Pod Squad.” Likins was front and center in the Dana Hills student section, loudly lending his support in playoff runs for the Dolphins basketball, volleyball and girls water polo teams. DP

Nathan Fletcher Gets ‘Heavy’ New film details surfer’s pursuit of the world’s gnarliest waves

f you enjoy watching people challenge waves of unusual size and power, you’re going to love the new film by director Michael Oblowitz. Heavy Water documents and details San Clemente’s own Nathan Fletcher and his pursuit to wrangle the Pacific.

From his historic wave at Teahupoo on the 2013 Code Red swell, to chasing swell in Fiji and beyond, Fletcher has both the skills and DNA to tackle anything the ocean can throw at him.

“We touch on some family stuff. We talk about what my dad was doing with jet skis on the North Shore back in the day.

We talk to Peter Cole about some board design,” Fletcher said. “And then there’s my grandfather and the whole Hoffman story. So, yeah, it touches on that to help set the stage, but it’s not what the whole movie’s about.”

The movie is largely about Fletcher’s relationship with the sea and his good friend, Bruce Irons. It culminates with Fletcher jumping out of a helicopter and into a wave.

“It’s like a mix between Wave Warriors and Hollywood,” Fletcher said. “It’s got the graphics and the narration and everything, but it’s also ‘surfy.’ The story leads up to the helicopter, which is more dra-

matic. There’s not as much talking. There are multiple angles. It’s kind of futuristic and crazy. So it starts really documentarystyle and ends with this look at the future

of surfing and big waves and whatever’s going on . . . not like a wave pool.”

The film, produced by Red Bull Media House and All Edge Entertainment, will

have a one-day-only screening in more than 350 theaters around the country on June 13. From there, it will be released on digital platforms. DP

ll groms are awesome, but the stoke of Bodhi Aguilar is especially inspiring. Watching him and his friends run herd over Salt Creek during the Cosmic Creek Surf Festival in Dana Point was all-time. Aguilar and his pal, Finn McCarty, were in and out of the water all day. Grabbing different boards, bodysurfing with legendary waterman Mark Cunningham, rolling around in the sand, hanging in their wetsuits all day, throwing shakas and smiles at everyone. It’s what a well-lived day at the beach is all about.

The good vibes and positivity are paying off for Aguilar, big time. When he’s not in the water, Aguilar’s been ripping at the San Clemente skatepark, dialing in his airs, foot-plants and smooth lines.

Last month, the 8-year-old San Clemente goofy-footer finished in second place in the Under-9 division of the WSA West Coast Championships. But even more significant, Aguilar’s on to bigger and better things next season.

“I got to retire my dad from the push-in division today, which is cool and a bummer at the same time. We made some amazing memories these past couple years,” Aguilar wrote on his Instagram feed.
