Five things Dana Point should know this week Man Found Unresponsive in Dana Point Harbor THE LATEST: An unidentified 53-year-old man was found unresponsive in the water at Dana Point Harbor on Monday, June 17 at around 5:30 p.m. The Major Accident Reconstruction Team of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department responded to the report, and the investigation is ongoing.

A bystander had noticed the man submerged in the water while attached to a leash on a paddle board. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It may have been a medical issue, but that will be determined after an autopsy and toxicology (report),” said Carrie Braun, a public information officer for OCSD. There were no obvious signs of trauma.

Braun confirmed that the deceased man had last been seen by his wife 90 minutes earlier.—Lillian Boyd

New Principal for Dana Hills High School THE LATEST: The Dolphins will return to school this fall with a new principal on campus. Capistrano Unified School District’s Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Dr. Brad Baker on Wednesday, June 12. The decision follows former Principal Joshua Porter’s career move to Los Angeles Unified School District as assistant superintendent.

Baker grew up as a CUSD student and graduated from San Clemente High School. He went on to play football for Saddleback Community College, where his team earned a national championship.

When he transferred to Azusa Pacific University, the football team he played for also earned a national championship. Baker earned a Master’s degree in educational leadership and administration from Chapman University and a Doctor of Education from University of Southern California.

“I was an offensive lineman. I feel like I still hold onto that position’s approach with life; I want to work hard to set up others for success. I want to provide that essential support for a team to go far,” Baker said.

After playing a few seasons of football in Europe, Baker returned to Southern California and embarked on a career in “learning,” he says. He received his teaching credential and was hired as a student Dana Point Times June 21-27, 2019

supervisor and football and basketball coach for SCHS. “I was actually interviewed by a panel of teachers who taught me when I was a student,” Baker said. “It was great to be able to return to that community and give back.”

After SCHS, Baker taught at Serra High School in San Juan Capistrano and started administrative work for various schools in the CUSD system, a school district he has exclusively worked for his entire career.

Baker now leaves behind Shorecliffs Middle School, where he was principal for more than three years, and where one of his two children is currently enrolled.

“It was a tough decision. But the amount of overwhelming support and welcome I’ve received just in the few days since the board approved my hire has been incredible,” Baker said. “I love how the city and the school support each other.

I’m proud to now be a part of that.”

Payne Files FPPC Complaint over PAC’s Role in Trolley Hop THE LATEST: A former city council candidate has filed a complaint with the state’s Fair Political Practices Commission, questioning the relationship between the organizers of the annual Trolley Hop and one of this year’s sponsors—a political action committee rife with controversy during last year’s city council election.

Charles Payne, who lost his bid for a seat on the council in 2018, is accusing the Dana Point Lantern District Alliance (DPLDA) of acting on behalf of the Dana

Point Taxpayers Association (DPTA) by collecting contributions for the PAC through its sale of mugs needed to participate in the annual Hop. “It appears that the DPLDA is either an unregistered political action committee working in conjunction with DPTA, or an alter-ego acting as a clandestine fundraising arm of the DPTA,” Payne stated in his June 16 complaint, noting that the Alliance’s webpage has been “scrubbed” of all of its membership names.

The Taxpayers Association has faced political backlash and is currently the subject of a lawsuit accusing the PAC of making libelous statements through its series of political mailers sent out to voters leading up to last year’s election.

Campaign finance disclosures show that the Taxpayers Association PAC spent more than $28,000 during the campaign to oppose Payne and fellow candidates Mark McGinn and Joe Jaeger. The PAC spent about $10,325 for mailers specifically targeting Payne, Dana Point Times previously reported.

The Lantern District Alliance says that the Taxpayers Association’s role in this year’s hop was to offset the costs for producing the mugs, also denying allegations that the funds were raised for the PAC, which was a first-time sponsor this year.

“This year, the Dana Point Taxpayers Association (DPTA) offered to be one of the sponsors for the Trolley Hop in the event there was a financial shortfall, which would help to keep the price of the Trolley Hop mugs at the low price of $10,” the Alliance said in an emailed statement.

“In the end, there was not a shortfall, and financial support from the DPTA was not needed after all,” the Alliance added.

“The DPTA neither contributed nor received funds from this event.”

ance and the event’s organizer, explained that the Trolley Hop was created to encourage ridership for the city’s free summertime trolley service, as well as promote businesses in the Lantern District.

To participate in the Hop, patrons needed to purchase the mugs for $10 at participating locations. With the mugs, participants could use the trolley to head to a number of restaurants throughout Dana Point and receive discounted menu items.

The Taxpayers Association was among several sponsors of the fifth annual Trolley Hop, including LIBRE Tequila and New Vision Graphics & Signworks, according to the Alliance’s website.

During the June 15 event, state Assemblymember Bill Brough, a former Dana Point councilmember, posted a photo of himself and Mayor Joe Muller alongside Alliance members promoting the outing, calling it the Dana Point Taxpayers Association Trolley Hop—setting off a social-media storm.

Requests for comment from Brough’s office had not been returned as of press time.

In his FPPC complaint, Payne called the photo “troubling,” because Muller and fellow Councilmembers Jamey Federico and Richard Viczorek, who won their campaigns in the 2018 election, “were the beneficiaries” of the Association’s political spending.

Community voices were also quick to condemn the City of Dana Point, believing the event had the appearance of being a citysponsored endeavor, as signage displayed around Dana Point to promote it used a similar color scheme to the city’s branding.

City Manager Mark Denny has stated the city was not involved in the Hop other than to give the Alliance permission to hang its banner promoting the event outside the trolley.

“So we do let them do that, and it runs basically the week before the event,” Denny told DP Times. “And all it says is the Trolley Hop and the date. It doesn’t list the sponsors.”

Denny was asked whether the city believed the Hop to be a fundraiser for the PAC. “You know, I don’t know. I guess, theoretically, it could be, but I never had a sense that it was a fundraising event,” he said. “My sense was it was always more of an economic development event for the restaurants in town.”

The Lantern District Alliance responded to the criticism it’s received over the Association’s sponsorship by stating some in the community “choose to see everything through the prism of partisan politics.”

“These are the same people who advocate boycotts on local businesses that do not share their political view. I hope the residents of this great city reject this negativity and allow this event to continue,” the Alliance stated. “Allowing this event to be canceled in the future would be a sad day for our city and a sad statement of the (Cont. on page 4) danapointtimes.com

Judge Carter Removed from Homeless Lawsuit against San Clemente THE LATEST: A federal judge has granted a group of south Orange County cities’ request to remove Judge David O. Carter from a homelessness lawsuit that names cities including Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente.

Orange County Catholic Worker, along with the Emergency Shelter Coalition and Housing is a Human Right Orange County, filed the suit on Feb. 27 against Orange County and its cities for allegedly not doing enough to provide homeless shelters.

The city of San Clemente was officially served with the lawsuit on May 24, while the cities of San Juan and Dana Point were served on May 28.

The cities of Aliso Viejo, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, known as the “City Movants,” filed a motion on May 24 to disqualify the assigned District Judge, the Honorable Carter—a request granted by

United States District Judge James Selna.

The City Movants listed three complaints to support their request for Carter’s recusal: first, Carter’s engagement in ex parte communications (speaking to some of the parties in the lawsuit without the City Movants present); secondly, statements made by Carter that implied bias; and, finally, Carter’s comments made in a conference on cities that would not be attending a hearing in which all the mayors and city managers in Orange County had been invited.

According to the court order granting Carter’s recusal, Carter had stated two weeks prior to the conference, “In the future, for the cities who aren’t here—and one outside law firm gave their five cities the advice not to attend, and I won’t name those five cities for you—but it’s gonna be hard in the future if this Court can’t take action . . .”

Carter ordered the parties in Housing is a Human Right Orange County et al v. The County of Orange et al for a court appearance, requesting the mayor, city manager and police chief or sheriff of five cities to attend. During this time, the City Movants had not yet been served or appeared.

At the status conference, Carter noted the absence of the cities. U.S. District Judge Selna wrote in the order that

Carter’s statements are, at a minimum, problematic.

“The direct statements about the City Movants would sway a reasonable observer based on appearances to conclude the District Judge could not be objective and impartial with respect to the City Movants,” Selna said.

“In attempting to achieve a county-wide resolution, he cannot be faulted for using direct language apprising the parties in that case of realities of the situation and the need to come together. That’s what settlement judges do. It is the unintended and unanticipated juxtaposition of this [south county] case with Catholic Worker that compels much of the result here,” the ruling continues. —LB and SR

White Pelican Gallery to Feature Native American Jewelry Designer David Rosales White Pelican Gallery has been a fixture in the Dana Point Harbor ever since Diana Poulos bought the business more than two decades ago and brought her son, Chad, on board to help out.

“I was still in college at the time,” Chad said. “I graduated, pretty much two months before she bought the business, told her I’d help her out for six months, and that was 24 years ago.”

Diana Poulos was an active member of the Dana Point Harbor business community before she passed away last December after a long battle with cancer.

Chad Poulos, who has been working with jewelry and helping customers in the gallery for all those years, is now faced with the task of running the entire business on his own.

Poulos is counting on longtime family friend and business collaborator David Rosales to help get summertime business kicked off this weekend. As the owner of the wholesale jewelry supplier, Supersmith Inc., in New Mexico, Rosales is one of the most prominent designers of NaDana Point Times June 21-27, 2019

CA) voted to pay off the TCA’s unfunded pension liability with the Orange County Employees Retirement System (OCERS) on July 1 of this year.

TCA is the government agency overseeing operations of California’s largest network of toll roads: State Routes 73, 133, 241 and 261.

TCA’s unfunded actuarial accrued liability (UAAL) currently stands at $12.8 million, according to a June 13 press release from the TCA. Director Joe Muller, chair of TCA’s Joint Finance & Investment Committee and Dana Point mayor, explained that by paying that amount off now, TCA can lower its employer contribution rate by almost half of the 24 percent of salaries that it is currently obligated to pay.

“Paying off the unfunded pension liability allows TCA to realize a present value savings of approximately $2 million based on the interest we pay to OCERS, compared to the interest we earn on our cash,” said Amy Potter, Chief Financial Officer for TCA. Muller contrasted TCA’s action with the growing number of Orange County cities resorting to tax increases to cope with rising unfunded pension liability costs that consume expanding percentages of their budgets.—Cari Hachmann

Mine closures over the past decade, and other mines shifting their focus to mining copper and other metals, have limited supply and created an increased demand for turquoise over the past several years.

“There are stockpiles of turquoise that

some guys have. David has a really nice collection of stones,” Poulos said. “I’ve been in his stone vault, and it’s incredible, so he’s got enough stone to work with for many, many years.”

Poulos said the uniqueness of Rosales’ work can be seen in his stone combinations and quality of the inlay, with nice, heavy, silver stones set deep and well so that they don’t pop out.

“I have not seen anybody that mixes the stones together like he does. The way his line works, any piece you see in his Page 4

In 2018, I ran for Dana Point City Council in District 2. I felt strongly that the residents of Dana Point needed a voice in local government to push back on the forces of real estate development that have been driving city politics and policy for some time. Unfortunately, I lost to Richard Viczorek.

Late in the race, the Dana Point Taxpayers Association (DPTA) paid for a series of negative advertisements that flat-out lied about my affiliation with a real estate developer. There was never any such affiliation. All records of political donations are public, and anyone could find that I took no money from real estate developers. The DPTA is listed as one of Mr. Viczorek’s campaign contributors ($2,467 to “Oppose McGinn”). Mayor (Joe) Muller and Councilmember (Jamey) Federico also list the DPTA as donors to their campaigns.

The DPTA paid for a series of advertisements that published lies about me and two other candidates. As a result of those false advertisements, DPTA is currently engaged in a lawsuit for “disseminating a campaign flyer that includes false statements” in direct violation of California Civil Code, Section 45.

This past weekend, the DPTA sponsored the “Trolley Hop,” an event that used the City of Dana Point’s trolleys to sell mugs and T-shirts to raise funds for the DPTA. Assemblyman Bill Brough’s Facebook page published a picture of Mr. Brough, Mayor Muller, and others holding mugs in front of one of the city’s trolleys.

Clearly, Mayor Muller is involved in this. The residents of Dana Point are owed an explanation. To Mayor Muller, Councilmembers Viczorek and Federico, and City Manager Mark Denny, were you aware of this and responsible for it? Is it the policy of our city government to allow a scandalous and politically biased organization like the DPTA to use city property to raise funds?

WHEN FUN BECOMES POLITICAL CAROL WILSON, Dana Point

A friend of mine was coming to visit me this Saturday from out of town. We were planning on going to the car show in San Clemente and then taking the Dana Point Trolley Hop in the afternoon. As I browsed the details of the event and was deciding Page 5

Friday night which places we wanted to visit on the Trolley Hop, I noticed the Dana Point Taxpayers Association (DPTA) was the sponsor. I stopped and thought, “Wasn’t that the PAC that attacked several candidates in the last city council election with outright lies, spending $60K+ to elect their candidates?” Sure enough, it was; I decided then and there we were not going to attend.

Some of the restaurants that participated should just make a private contribution, not take part in an underhanded fundraiser for a PAC. Some restaurants may have been 100% in bed with this PAC, but others may not even have been aware who DPTA is. If you are curious and think a fundraiser for a PAC you don’t approve of is benefiting from your unknowing donation when you just wanted to have a good time, you may want to ask when you visit these restaurants: Brio Tuscan Grille, Luciana’s Ristorante, Hennessey’s Tavern, StillWater Spirits & Sounds, Harbor Deli, Sunsets Bar, Gemmel’s, Pepi’s, Taco Surf, the Shwack Beach Grill and The Point.

Big money is ruining our beach town vibe of “It’s Party Time in Dana Point.” We just want to have a good time enjoying ourselves with our neighbors and friends, and keep politics out of “Harboring the Good Life.” We managed to have fun, anyway, riding the trolley to the Porsche show at Sea Terrace Park.

RIDE THE TROLLEY ALL THE WAY TO THE SWAMP CHARLES PAYNE, Dana Point

First, let me say that I think a Trolley Hop is a great idea to showcase our city, our business community, and our terrific trolley program. That is, if it’s an actual city-sponsored event, as I believed the Trolley Hop was. I believe many other residents were under the same false impression. Even the local paper was misled.

In fact, this event, and perhaps the previous four, were political fundraisers deceptively marketed as city-sponsored events. The organizers used a color scheme and graphics that mimicked official city communications. They posted their advertising on city directory signposts alongside city signage. And they included city-generated imagery and web links on their website.

All of it seems designed to leave a reasonable person with the false impression that the Trolley Hop is an official city event, rather than a political fundraiser. I doubt many people who purchased a $10 souvenir mug knew they were contributing to a political PAC. I wonder if they knew their money might be spent on legal defense over that PAC’s current defamation lawsuit.

Restaurants were required to offer food

and drink specials at or below specific price points to participate, and entice the public to purchase a $10 mug. So if a restaurant offered a $10 margarita for $5, then every margarita sold at a discount constitutes a $5 in-kind political contribution. Those contributions must now be legally reported.

Deceptive advertising is punishable as a misdemeanor, and as a civil tort with actual and potentially punitive damages.

CA Government Code 8314 states, “It is unlawful for any elected state or local officer, including any state or local appointee, employee, or consultant, to use or permit others to use public resources for a campaign activity, or personal or other purposes which are not authorized by law.”

The city is arguably estopped from denying knowledge that a PAC was using taxpayer-funded city resources for political purposes. Mayor Joe Muller was featured prominently on social media, displaying his souvenir mug in a post that acknowledged the event was sponsored by a partisan political organization.

However, I don’t expect the city to take any serious action over these issues.

Mayor Muller was a participant in the event.

Councilmember Jamey Federico is a subject in an FPPC investigation over his alleged collaboration with the same political PAC during the campaign.

And the three-member council majority were all beneficiaries of approximately $28,000 in political spending by the same political PAC. With these serious conflicts of interest, we can look forward to the same political swamp continuing to thrive in our little town.

Organizers for the Trolley Hop deny it was fundraiser, and Dana Point city staff has denied knowledge of the DPTA’s involvement prior to the event. A

mazon Studios’ latest comedy, Late Night, is one of those movies that is so, so close to being great, yet settles for “just” good. It had a lot of potential going into production. An Oscar–winning actress (Emma Thompson), a hit TV comedy star (Mindy Kaling) and a successful filmmaker (Nisha Ganatra). But, if anything, the new comedy reminds us that movie productions are a different beast than TV productions, even though the story is set around a TV team.

In downtown New York City, Molly Patel (Kaling) takes a wild chance and applies for the position of a new staff writer on late night TV host Katherine Newbury’s (Thompson) talk show. Katherine is about to lose her show after 15 years of being the most successful female host in late night programming, and she needs something fresh and relevant to change her network’s mind. Molly ends up being that new addition Katherine’s writing staff needs.

Late Night does have a lot of laughs since, at the end of the day, Kaling is a good comedy writer and knows how to work with the setting.

Thompson isn’t completely out of her element, either. The thing holding it back, for me, is that despite the humor and good chemistry between the cast members, it doesn’t “feel” like a movie. It ends up channeling more the atmosphere and tone of a TV episode. This makes sense, because Kaling is a TV veteran and Ganatra has more credits directing television than film. But it works against the picture, in my opinion.

Despite this, I still recommend Late Night for a free weekend and some easy laughs. DP danapointtimes.com

The Force Awakens Disneyland’s newest expansion opens up a living and breathing Star Wars experience ZACH CAVANAGH, DANA POINT TIMES

long time ago in a galaxy far, far away is now here—and closer than could have ever been imagined.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is the latest, and largest-ever at 14 acres, expansion at Disneyland in Anaheim, and simply put, it is an achievement.

From the instant you break off of the Big Thunder Trail in Frontierland or walk beyond the Hungry Bear Restaurant in Critter Country, you are transported to the Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu, all part of the fully immersive experience that is Galaxy’s Edge.

Aside from a brief flash from the top of Big Thunder Mountain or between the trees on the Disneyland Railroad, visitors cannot see into Galaxy’s Edge from the outside, and travelers—or “off-worlders,” as the inhabitants of Batuu call them— cannot see any vestiges of the outside world. The only trace may be the tip of Big Thunder Mountain, which blends in with the other various rock spires that surround Black Spire Outpost.

Inside the new world, everything and everyone is completely in-character, all inhabitants of Batuu. Disney Imagineers and Lucasfilm created a narrative, in canon with the Star Wars universe set between 2017’s Episode VIII: The Last Jedi and this December’s Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, that radiates throughout Galaxy’s Edge.

Black Spire Outpost was once a lively spaceport for trade and fueling on long journeys. However, like the interstate system to Route 66, the introduction of lightspeed travel to the galaxy meant Batuu got passed over and left behind. Now, Batuu is a hive for smugglers looking to stay out of the way and undetected. Following the events of Episode VIII, the Resistance has set up shop as they look to regroup, but the First Order has also arrived to find the Resistance and take away any sympathizers it finds.

Galaxy’s Edge opened to the public with reservations during a soft-opening period from May 31 to June 23. The general public will be allowed entry without reservations beginning June 24, although Disneyland will put a limit on capacity and require guests to check in and receive a “boarding pass” after that capacity is hit.

I got my shot to visit Galaxy’s Edge during the reservation period on June 3 and

5, and as a longtime Disneyland visitor and lifelong Star Wars fan, I was completely blown away. The experience of going back to Main Street, USA in Disneyland after my four-hour reservation slot was nothing short of surreal. You truly feel like you’ve been transported somewhere else.

The level of detail and care put into crafting Galaxy’s Edge is extraordinary. While clearly brand new, the land nails that Star Wars feel of futuristic, yet dirty and lived in. The sounds, from the creatures in the forest area to the sounds of spaceships arriving and taking off from the docking bay, and the sprinkling around of words written

in the Star Wars language of Aurebesh, including themed Coca-Cola bottles, hit those extra senses of immersion.

The centerpiece of the land is the Millennium Falcon, the first-ever full-size reproduction of the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy. It acts as the entrance to the land’s only ride for now, Smuggler’s Run. A second ride, the Rise of the Resistance, which has been touted as a revolutionary four-in-one ride, opens later this year.

On Smuggler’s Run, a six-man crew of pilots, gunners and engineers take control of the Millennium Falcon herself to steal some cargo. There isn’t much that can

match the feeling of getting to punch the Millennium Falcon into hyperspace.

Drinks and music at the cantina, run-ins with Chewbacca, Rey, Kylo Ren and First Order stormtroopers and lightsaberbuilding and droid-building attractions round out the interactive and transporting experience of Galaxy’s Edge.

As they say on Batuu, may the spires keep you! (That’s a formal goodbye, for us off-worlders.)

Robert Ramos and his restaurants have been a fixture in San Clemente for more than two decades. The original Café del Sol opened in 2007, and its sister restaurant, La Tiendita, has been in business for 26 years. When an opportunity to add another location with a prime spot on the beach arose, Ramos jumped at the chance.

“I did not seek this. This actually came and fell in my hands,” said Ramos.

“Three, four weeks ago, I had no clue.”

Ramos didn’t have plans to open a new location until he got a phone call from one of his suppliers letting him know that the spot on the beach at Doheny was available. He knew that he needed to move quickly if he was going to be able to take advantage of the space.

“I came and looked at the place and found out what I needed to do to get this place open, and within two and a half weeks we were ready to go,” Ramos said.

“Within that amount of time, I was able to get it through the state, get it through the health department, apply for the beer and wine transfer. Everybody had to sign off on it, and here we are, open in a week.”

Being able to open a restaurant on such short notice is no easy task, especially when the location is in a state park with a hefty rent of 18 percent of the business’s gross income. Ramos credits his other restaurants’ history and track record in the community for helping him to expedite the process that might deter many new restaurant owners.

“The state looks at you, and you’re a guy that just opened up, are they going to want to give you the opportunity, as opposed to a person that has two thriving businesses that’s been there for a long time, one with 26 years, the other with 12?” he said. ”That

shows that we have the experience to pull it off.”

That experience is on full display with the food at Café del Sol, which should make many summertime beachgoers very satisfied when they need to refuel after having fun in the sun and surf. For a complete fill-up, Ramos recommends the restaurant’s specialty, a burrito called “The Patron.”

“We make everything from scratch on the premises. We try to get organic whenever possible, as much as we can,” he said. “We do not have to use preservatives in any of our foods. The only thing that

With a new oceanfront location and healthy menu options, Café del Sol is trying to change the way people eat, and the way they enjoy Doheny Beach.

“You can’t beat a location like this,” said Ramos. “It’s a good spot to have.”

Dana Wharf Fish Count Summer catches pick up despite June gloom

S

ummer fishing has picked up at Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching, even while we all wait for the sun to poke through the June gloom.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said that the fleet is seeing clean water in kelp areas, with water temperatures around 66-67 degrees. The clean kelp water, along with new anchovy bait, perked up the bass catches along the surface.

The three-quarter-day trips came in from the deep-bottom fishing to focus on shallower waters closer to shore. Woolley said there has been some good kelp growth in key spots along the shore, resulting in some good calico bass fishing.

Anglers had success with artificial baits as well as live bait.

On the all-day and overnight trips, yellowtail has been found at Catalina Island.

Anglers had to fight off the sea lions for their catches, but the fleet was still able to pull in 12-25-pound catches. Bass and bonito also filled the haul. Similar action was found at San Clemente Island,

PROJECT SUMMARY The Draft EIR assesses the potential environmental effects of implementing a proposed ocean water desalination facility located in Dana Point, including subsurface intake wells proposed at Doheny State Beach and Capistrano Beach, and various conveyance lines connecting the intake and discharge facilities to existing District property located approximately ½ mile inland, adjacent to San Juan Creek.

Summer Role Model Series Coming To SHACC When it comes to being a good surfer or lifeguard, sometimes it’s what you do out of the water that makes the biggest difference

his summer, the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center is teaming up with the San Clemente Junior Lifeguard Foundation to bring a series of “role model” talks to town. The goal is to expose young watermen and waterwomen in South Orange County to a variety of role models, including lifeguards, pro surfers and other notable athletes and influencers. Open to the public, there will be three different talks over the course of the summer, all dealing with varying subject matter.

“We did one last year with Shaun Tomson and were overwhelmed by the response, so we’re coming back bigger and better this summer,” says Greg Hulsizer, who is organizing the talks. “We’ll be covering a number of different topics and have some amazingly talented speakers donating their time to help support and

y favorite thing about surfing is that I can do it every day, and I love the feel of being in the water,” says 12-year-old Tosh Johnson.

The first time Johnson was on a surfboard, he was only 2 years old, but he says he “really started surfing at 5.”

Hailing from San Juan Capistrano, like so many kids in the area, Johnson was bitten by the surfing bug during the session he and his father would share at Doheny State Beach.

The first talk—“Safety First! If Something Happens, Will You Know What to Do?”—will be on Saturday, June 22 at the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center in San Clemente. It will be led by San Clemente resident and World Surf League physician Dr. Warren Kramer and feature San Clemente lifeguard John “Cheddar” Chetwynd, big-wave charger Rusty Long, ocean safety expert and instructor Morgan Hoestery, and lifeguard/professional surfer and emergency room nurse Marissa Shaw. The focus will revolve around what everyone needs to know if something goes wrong when we are out swimming, surfing or playing in the ocean.

On July 20, the second lecture—“Let’s All Share the Stoke!”—will focus on the power of positivity in the water. It will deal with topics such as surfing etiquette, anti-

bullying and the importance of “sharing the stoke” by caring for our environment and giving back. Hosting the talk will be esteemed Orange County Register reporter and San Clemente resident Laylan Connelly. She’ll be speaking in an open forum with Dane, Patrick and Tanner Gudauskas; local pro surfer Crosby Colapinto; local super groms Sierra Downer, Tyrone Fomenko and Nate Pierce; as well as Jaysea DeVoe, Natasha Overin and high school Surfrider Foundation representative Zach Meyler.

Finally, rounding out the summer offerings, the topic on Aug. 10 will be “Girl Power in the Ocean!” An exciting opportunity for boys and girls alike, World Surf League commentator Rosy Hodge will be leading the discussion, which will feature Patti Paniccia, professional women’s surfing pioneer, attorney, author, broadcast journalist and law professor; San Clemente

Seven years later, Tosh’s love and passion for surfing and the ocean haven’t diminished. Currently barreling into 7th grade at Marco Forester Middle School, Josh can be found hitting the surf either at Salt Creek in Dana Point or Lower Trestles in San Clemente—when he’s not hitting the books.

“Surfing inspires me in school, at home and in the water, to keep working and never give up. Surfing is fun and I like to push myself to get better,” Johnson says. DP

Outlook: Old southwest swell drops as as the new round of south-southwest swell increases through the weekend.

Expect surf to remain in the waist to shoulder high zone (3-4’+ faces) for well exposed breaks with occasional sets pushing head high (5’ faces) around the peak of the swell, late Saturday into early Sunday. Light southerly winds are expected first thing Saturday, picking up a notch out of the southwest in the afternoon. Sunday likely sees more favorable light/variable morning winds, with similar flow out of the southwest in the afternoon.
