Five things Dana Point should know this week Chamber Holds State of the City Reception THE LATEST: The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce hosted the Dana Point 2019 State of the City reception in partnership with the City of Dana Point on Thursday, May 31 at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa. “Dana Point has been a place where innovators, competitors and watermen have shaped our history,” said Mayor Joe Muller. “The city is working hard toward being a vibrant, world-class place through new development and new traditions.”

This year’s State of the City short film cited Ohana Fest, Driftwood Country Music Festival and Sabroso Craft Beer, Taco & Music Festival as some of the newer events that have driven tourism toward Dana Point. Muller has previously stated that these are events that Dana Point should be capitalizing on for growth and development.

The promotional video debuted that evening with highlights on the Harbor Partners’ development of the Dana Point Harbor, spotlighting Bryon Ward of Burnham-Ward Properties, who will be working on developing the harbor’s commercial core.

All of the developments you see in the harbor were built in the early ’70s, Ward said.

“We want to be responsive to the merchants that have invested so much in this harbor,” Ward said. “It means a lot to us to recognize them and their businesses and to help them grow.”

The State of the City reception highlighted how surf culture and the surf industry impact local tradition and community. The Dana Point Surf Club started about 2 ½ years ago and currently has between 300 and 400 members “I want to emphasize that you are an ambassador of this community and not just the surf community. You represent Dana Point throughout California,” said Eric Diamond, club president.

This year, the DPSC plans on doing a California surfing day with the Boys & Girls Club. The club gave out its first scholarship to a Dana Hills High School student last year and will continue that tradition this year.

embrace the local community,” Ward said.

“Education and paying homage to the surf industry is a very important part of our project.”

Businesses including Bear Coast Coffee, F45 Training and Sea & Sky were promoted in the film for being fresh, new additions to the business community.

“Sea & Sky has had tremendous support from everyone who has walked through our doors, whether it’s the customers, the vendors, the consignment artists,” said Lisa Hatch, co-owner of Sea & Sky. “We could not have done this without the support of the city.”

Budget for Upcoming Fiscal Years Adopted by City Council THE LATEST: The Dana Point City Council voted to adopt the Proposed Operating and Capital Improvement Budgets for Fiscal Years 2019-2020 (FY20) and 2020-2021 (FY21) on Tuesday, June 4.

After conducting 10 budget workshops throughout the past year, conducting a community survey and updating financial policies such as for long-term financial planning, the City of Dana Point is moving forward with its proposed budgets.

City staff followed procedures that are recommended by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) under the organization’s best practices.

For the first time, the city is implementing priority-based budgeting. There will also be full funding for police services and emergency preparedness.

The budget also expands homeless outreach programs, infrastructure construction and maintenance, as well as facilities maintenance.

There has been no increase or reduction in the number of employees for the city, but there has been a $211,000 annual reduction in structural personnel costs.

Funding for future capital investments include Doheny Village Beautification, which currently has $727,139 deposited.

City officials expect development impact fees to yield about $3 million that will be directed to Doheny Village Projects.

New Code Enforcement Approach Rolls Out THE LATEST: Rather than a reactive approach to city code enforcement, as how city officials have described, the Code Enforcement Division of the City of Dana Point will now be taking proactive measures. The most prominent change from the previous system is that code enforcement was formerly complaint-based only.

The Code Enforcement Division promotes, maintains, and enforces ordinances and laws to “preserve, protect, and enhance the quality of life in Dana Point,” according to a statement from the city. The recently completed Code Enforcement Operations and Strategic Plan provides a new framework for city staff to provide code compliance.

Common concerns raised to the city include properties that have accumulated junk, trash or neglected possessions, dead or hazardous vegetation, or graffiti.

Code Enforcement Officers follow up on those complaints by conducting a site investigation to determine if there is a violation,” the city statement says. “Once it is determined that there is a violation, a code enforcement case is opened.”

In 2016, the Code Enforcement Division opened 1,270 confirmed code enforcement cases and closed 1,052 cases, with a 98% voluntary compliance rate. The division also sent out 240 weed abatement notices, with 97% voluntary compliance; addressed 31 graffiti complaints, facilitated 153 bulky item pickups, addressed 54 water quality issues affecting the city’s storm drainage system, monitored 200 massage licenses and issued/re-issued 190 short-term rental permits.

Nearly $150,000 in Narcotics Seized From I-5 Smugglers THE LATEST: U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a 23-year-old woman suspected of smuggling a heroin-like substance on Thursday, May 30 while she was driving on Interstate 5 near San Clemente.

Another woman was arrested for smuggling narcotics on the same day near Aliso Creek rest area, according to a press release from the San Diego sector of the United States Border Patrol.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. on May 30, Border Patrol pulled over a female U.S. citizen driving a 2010 Chevy Silverado.

Agents searched the truck with a K-9 unit and found two packages wrapped in plastic in the front seat. Inside the packages was a substance that is alleged to have characteristics of heroin, according to the press release. The packages weighed a total of 4.6 pounds, which translates to about $48,300 in street value.

Later that day, at approximately 12:30 p.m., agents encountered a 29-year-old female citizen in a 2005 Honda Pilot near Aliso Creek rest area on I-5.

Agents again had help from a K-9 unit to search the car. Authorities found 11 cellophane packages that were hidden in the car’s rear differential, a component that is part of the axle assembly underneath the car.

Three packages tested positive for fentanyl, while eight tested positive for methamphetamine.

According to authorities, the fentanyl totaled 7.49 pounds, with a street value of about $90,100, while the methamphetamine totaled 4.8 pounds and valued at $11,040. Both women and the narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation, and their vehicles were seized by the U.S. Border Patrol, the press release said.

WHAT’S NEXT: As of today, the San Diego Sector of the U.S. Border Patrol has seized approximately 2,315 pounds of methamphetamine, 64 pounds of fentanyl, and over 3,000 ounces of heroin, with a combined estimated street value of more than $9.2 million, authorities said.

New Development for Laguna Niguel Approved

by County Board THE LATEST: The Orange County Board of Supervisors has approved the master lease agreements for the Laguna Niguel Town Center. The board selected Laguna Niguel Town Center Partners, LLC (LNTCP) to develop a mixed-use project on 24 acres of county-owned property.

The property, formerly known as the South County Justice Center, will be developed to include retail, office use, residential space, restaurants, a specialty market, food hall and community event space.

“This multi-faceted development is going to bring enormous opportunities to the city and residents of Laguna Niguel, along with the surrounding communities,” said Lisa Bartlett, chairperson of the OC Board of Supervisors, serving the 5th District.

WHAT’S NEXT: The proposed development plan is anticipated to generate approximately $196 million of revenue to the county over the 79-year lease term.

LNTCP plans to invest approximately $200 million to plan, design, entitle, permit and construct the project. The City of Laguna Niguel plants to host a project design working group session this month.—LB

‘Once a Marine, always a Marine’ Local legend and WWII veteran celebrates 99th birthday at Camp Pendleton The U.S. Marines’ pride in taking care of their own was on full display at MCAS Camp Pendleton on Friday, May 31 as they paid tribute to Maj. Richard “Dick” Cropley (USMC, Retired), also affectionately known as “Mr. TStreet” to longtime residents of San Clemente.

Dick Cropley was an original “Plank Owner” of the VMSB-235 “Death Angels,” a divebomber squadron that formed at NAS El Centro, CA on January 1, 1943. The squadron flew combat missions in Guadalcanal, Arundel, New Georgia and Balale during World War II. Cropley was honored during the Marine Aircraft Group 39 change of command ceremony and parade on the tarmac before sharing a 99th birthday cake with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 164, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and receiving a private tour of an MV-22 Osprey, the current primary assault support aircraft for the U.S. Marine Corps.

“I never flew anything near that size,” said Cropley. “The engine is bigger than the planes I used to fly. I couldn’t imagine how you control those big things.”

Cropley piloted numerous types of combat planes during the war, including the Vought F4U Corsair and Douglas SBD Dauntless.

“I was a fighter pilot or a dive-bomber pilot,” said Cropley. “Line up with the target and try and get a little speed before you get there, and then push over straight down.”

As a 135-pound first lieutenant during the Battle of Guadalcanal, Cropley was the smallest man in his dive bombing squadron, but he had one of the biggest responsibilities as the “Tail End Charlie.” He was the last pilot over each bombing target during every raid. The Marine Chevron newspaper even labeled Cropley as “Mighty Mite” in its January 1944 publication for his big impact during the war, despite his small stature.

“We were pretty busy, so we’d be flying sometimes two combat missions a day,” Cropley said. “The infantry went in and took this Japanese airfield and put ground troops ashore to defend it from them, and we flew off of the airfield, and we flew from there up to the various islands and bombed them.”

Cropley and the “Death Angels” relied on their fellow Marines to protect them on their bombing runs from Henderson Field during the Battle of Guadalcanal. This is one of the reasons why Cropley said his squadron’s success rate was so high.

“We usually had a fighter escort that would keep the enemy fighters away from us,” he said. “We were under enemy fire from the ground all the time. We were attacking enemy anti-aircraft guns. We were bombing those to wipe them out.”

Despite threats from air and land, Cropley said that his biggest fear during combat missions was actually taking damage from his own bombs.

hit with your own stuff,” said Cropley. “Sometimes, some of the pilots would dive down to release their bombs. They waited so long that some of their own bomb blast would hit them, but it never happened to me.”

Cropley was the commanding officer of the air base at Camp Pendleton for two years before transferring to former Marine Corp Station El Toro for four more years.

Cropley and his family made San Clemente their home in 1952.

Back when Cropley was at Camp Pendleton, he used to land his plane on Basilone Road, when he had some down time, and go for a hunt.

“Things were much quieter in those days,” he said. “I’d pull the plane off in the boondocks and go duck hunting.”

Cropley retired from the Marines after 20 years and went on to further fame in the San Clemente community, becoming the owner of a popular summertime concession stand on T-Street, where he served up hamburgers from 1962-1990. The locals even named the popular surf break in front of the burger stand, “Cropley’s,” in his honor.

When asked about what it’s like to have been part of “The Greatest Generation,” Cropley said, “We must have had something. I’m pretty damn close to a hundred,

and I’m still going strong.”

After blowing out the candles on his 99th birthday cake at Camp Pendleton on Friday, Cropley got a little choked up as he looked across the room at all of the Marines there just for him.

“Once a Marine, always a Marine. So grateful that you guys care about me,” he said. “Usually you retire and that’s it; everybody forgets you.

Being here today and seeing all you people and talking to you, it’s really been great.”

Former Councilmember Presents Scholarships to Students at R.H. Dana Elementary Students, faculty and parents came together at R.H. Dana Elementary School on Friday, May 31 to present awards to students at the end of the third trimester of school. Former councilmember Scott Schoeffel was in attendance to present his “Excellence is Elementary” scholarship to two students at the school. Principal Kristen Nelson expressed gratitude about the scholarships when introducing Schoeffel to the students.

R.H. Dana is on track to integrate a Dual Immersion 50/50 program, English and Spanish, so the assemblies were presented in both languages. The two assemblies were split based on grade levels; one was K-2 and the other was 3-5. The scholarships went to a student from the highest grade level in each assembly.

Alondra Alvarez Petronilo, fifth grade, and Lucero Lecona, second grade, both were presented the “Excellence is Elementary” scholarships at their respective assemblies.

Petronilo and Lecona were both nominated by their teachers and faculty on the basis of having good grades, outstanding dedication, the utmost respect for everyone around them, as well as being problem-solvers and role models for their peers.

Petronilo and Lecona also received other awards during their assemblies for Perfect Attendance and Student of the Trimester. At the end of the assemblies, students had smiles from ear to ear, posing for pictures with their certificates.

Schoeffel, a resident of Dana Point for more than 30 years and a public servant for 20 years, has always felt it’s important to give back to the community. Schoeffel has helped fund local music education programs, such as SOCSA at Dana Hills High School. He recalls honoring students at their awards ceremonies, all dressed nicely and excited to be recognized for their passions. That’s how “Excellence is Elementary” came to be. He began this scholarship in 2013 and has honored other schools, such as the R.H. Dana Exceptional Needs School and Palisades Elementary School.

“All the bright futures start here,” Schoeffel said. His focus is to support, encourage, and recognize children for their accomplishments from the start of their school careers to keep them on the right path. He believes that this kind of recognition matters most when students are young. It’s something that they can remember fondly, something that stands out Dana Point Times June 7-13, 2019

Dana Point Pilot Helps Youth Discover Flight Local pilot Herb Carlson has now given more than 800 young people a free demonstration airplane ride as part of the EAA “Young Eagles” program, which helps introduce young people to flight. The program’s goal is to allow young people to experience positive activities and discover the possibilities available to them within the field of aviation. Carlson is one of 50,000 volunteers from around the globe who have devoted their time and aircraft to teach safe aircraft operation and the principles of flight. Participating young people become official Young Eagles with the flight. The names of the pilots and the participants are also included in the “World’s Largest Logbook,” which is on permanent display in the EAA Aviation Museum in Oshkosh, Wis., and online through the Young Eagles web site.

The Young Eagles Program was kickstarted by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) in July 1992 and has now flown more than two million young people, primarily between the ages of 8 and 17.

Coral Thrift Shop Awards $67,000 in Scholarships to Local Graduates On Thursday, May 23, seven Coral volunteers awarded 54 scholarships and a total of $67,000 to graduates of San Clem-

ente High, Dana Hills High, San Juan Hills High and J Serra High.

Opened in 1964, Coral Thrift Shop is located on El Camino Real in San Clemente.

“Since 1964, our small but mighty thrift store tucked in along El Camino Real has given nearly $3 million in support of our community’s youth,” stated Patricia Serrano, Coral President. “It all began with seven energetic housewives who wanted to make difference. And, indeed, they have.”

Coral also supports the San Clemente Boys and Girls Club and Dana Point Ocean Institute’s educational Oceans in Motion program, AVID, Casa Romantica and other local organizations. The 100% volunteer staff depends entirely on new and gently used items for re-sale.

Small Quakes Hit Near San Clemente Island A pair of small earthquakes struck near San Clemente Island, rattling some cities off Southern California’s coast in the early morning, Wednesday, June 5, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The first quake, a magnitude 4.3, hit shortly after 3:45 a.m. and had a depth of 5.2 miles, centered eight miles west of the island—just below Catalina Island and about 70 miles off the coast of San Diego.

A second magnitude-4.3 quake hit the near the same spot—about 9.3 miles west of the island—at 7:32 a.m., with the same depth of 5.2 miles, according to the USGS. A 3.0-magnitude aftershock was recorded at 9:13 a.m., nearly 2 ½ miles north of the island.

The cities of Dana Point, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano reportedly felt “weak” shaking during the initial quake, according to the USGS. As of 11:15 a.m.

Wednesday, the USGS received 1,085 responses to its “Did You Feel It?” page for the first quake.

“Hero” is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities. This honor should be reserved for individuals who commit extraordinary and selfless acts of bravery.

Kendrick Costillo was a Colorado teen fatally shot when he lunged at a school shooter, giving other kids enough time to escape. Anthony Sadler, Spencer Stone, Alex Skarlatos are three Californians who helped foil what could have been a mass shooting on a packed Paris train. These are heroes.

When I read Mrs. Weagley’s May 17 letter to the editor, as a longtime Capo Beach resident, I felt obligated to speak out. What has John Tomlinson ever done to deserve any accolade? It couldn’t be his voting record. Tomlinson voted to put developer-friendly Measure I on the ballot in an attempt to overturn the Town Center Plan. He spearheaded disbanding the Financial Review Committee, stopping independent review of city finances. He voted to divide our city into five districts, which denied voters any say in four out of five City Council seats.

Perhaps worst of all, Tomlinson voted to carve Capo Beach into two separate voting districts. As a longtime resident, he had to have known we have been a historic, tightknit community since 1928. Tomlinson could have been the third vote, with Lewis and Wyatt, to give Capo its right to vote for council in 2018. Instead, he threw us under the bus and sided with Viczorek and Muller. His pivotal vote disenfranchised Capo Beach, making us the only district with a city council incumbent not allowed to vote in 2018. This betrayal by one of our own was shocking and sad.

Other supporters include a Newport Beach billionaire, a Texas millionaire, and possibly several real estate and pro-developer “dark money” PACs whose donors remain hidden. DPTA dumped more than $20,000 into our 2018 city council election, spreading lies and smearing great candidates, Charles Payne, Mark McGinn and Joe Jaeger. DPTA even published Mr. Payne’s address and pictures of his home.

DON'T CONFLATE HOMELESSNESS WITH GREED

Regarding the article entitled “CUSD Survey Shows Support Of Bond Measure,” I sometimes wish that the people who want all these bonds, presumably toward education, were in my situation. I am a retired, single woman trying to make ends meet. My property tax has more than doubled in the last 10 years. Why? Not because the tax has gone up, but rather because these bonds, when approved, are attached to my property-tax bill. And, of course, I’m speaking for others in my situation.

Just consider for a moment what will happen to a single woman on a fixed income that can no longer raise the funds for these increased property-tax bills.

Do you really want me to have to give up my home, which I built and in which I have lived for 50 years? I believe that if you were in my situation, you would not approve of these bonds. There have to be measures to raise funds some other way.

As a transplant to San Clemente who had, as a liberal and to this point, generally been pleasantly surprised by the openmindedness of the community, I must say that the narrow-mindedness and just plain nastiness of much of the commentary about the homeless has been quite disappointing.

The letter that has provoked me to comment appeared last week. The writer lamented the Vista Del Mar Apartment situation. She was particularly concerned about the current residents who, through no fault of their own and after many years, now are being evicted because a new owner of their building has decided to change the character of the building and needs the current residents out to accomplish that change. And she commented that this particular change, creating housing for the homeless, amounted to a "waste of energy to support those [the homeless] . . . who only live for themselves and forget about others."

I can certainly empathize with the current residents and agree with the writer that the situation is unfortunate and arguably unfair for the current residents. But vilifying the homeless is a gratuitous attack that adds nothing to the discussion. Had a new owner decided to significantly upgrade the building—for example, to create luxury condos where there currently are far more modest apartments—the situation for the residents would essentially be the same: they'd be evictees forced to find other housing because of the greed of the new owner. If one wants to lament and even protest greed, great—I agree, there's far too much greed in this world. But you can do so without nasty, unfounded and, frankly, wrong-headed arguments that say more about the person making the argument than about the subjects of the argument.

He never did his homework. I don’t mean that he forgot it once in a while; I mean, he never did it. It is not unusual for an eighth-grade boy to be a bit careless about turning work in, but this was over the top. And he never argued with me about the zeros he received each day. In class, he swung between very quiet with a distant stare, to at times defiant. It was not until graduation day, when he showed up in a dirty shirt that he had been wearing for days, that I began to ask questions.

The principal did not want to say anything, as it was a private school, and a reputation for discretion was important.

I reminded her that she was a mandated reporter and was liable if something was going on.

The story? The boy and his mom fled to their car every night and stayed there until the abusive father passed out from all the alcohol. And because I did not know, I had unwittingly added to his distress with that wretched grade book.

I will never forget that boy and his unspoken burden.

Teachers, there are students you may see as obstinate and defiant. And some are. But others are dealing with trauma you and I can only imagine, and they have no other way to express it. Take a mo-

POTENTIAL Student Mary Sorensen’s Speech to the Dana Hills High School Graduation Class of 2019

G

ood afternoon, Dana Hills High School, my name is Mary Sorensen; it’s a pleasure to speak to you today.

This is, in many ways, a very strange day. All week I have been asking myself, “How can this be? It was just August. It was just freshman year.”

It’s quite ironic to feel this way, because there were definitely spots for me where it seemed it would never end, where I was desperate to be finished. And yet now I stand here, and as excited as I am for the future, there is a small piece of me that wishes it wasn’t over quite yet, that I could have just a few more moments.

But that’s the thing, isn’t it? We can’t have a few more moments. This is our last lesson to learn here—you have no control over the passing of time. It is instead our ability and privilege to squeeze every last drop of meaning out of time as it passes.

In all honesty, I don’t know a lot of you. But the purpose of high school isn’t to make the highest number of friends possible. It’s to learn how to be a good friend.

It’s not to get an excellent GPA, but rather to acquire knowledge, and skills, and the skills to acquire more knowledge.

You would be hard-pressed to find a student sitting here before me who did not accomplish these objectives to at least some degree. Many accomplished them to truly incredible degrees.

But now, the world does not much care what we have achieved. Most of the accomplishments we can claim at this moment will matter very little in a very short time. Which seems terribly unfair, and a little bleak, but to me it is a wonderful gift. The world will continue to demand we reach our potential, insisting that it has not been realized, that we have much, much further to go, and it doesn’t matter whether or not we feel capable, because we are.

I was told this was my opportunity to share some advice with everyone, to bestow a little wisdom. But quite frankly, I don’t feel at all qualified to do that. I’m 18. What do I know? So that is my advice. Remember you never know everything.

Always be willing receive new information, knowledge, perspective, understanding or opinions. In moments of judgment, frustration, or high risk, ask yourself, “What information do I lack? Am I qualified to draw this conclusion, is my reasoning fair, is making a choice or opinion based upon this quantity of information logical and justified?”

I may not be in the position to advise, so instead I ask. I ask that we all remember, always, that all people are equal and all people deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Simultaneously, do not forget that what they think doesn’t matter. Treat others with decency, but don’t treat them with deference. Love your fellow man. Real love, the kind that makes you willing to treat others with active kindness and respect, and a simultaneous total disregard for what your fellow man thinks of you, will bring you authentic joy and authentic peace of mind. So I suppose I do have a singular piece of formal advice: value the well-being of others, but not their opinions of you.

I do not doubt that in adulthood lies heartache and failure. But I have seen students in this audience overcome those things already. And I have no doubt that for all the hardship, there is equal joy, if only we pursue it.

Class of 2019: The world is wide, and the sky is high. Work hard. Create the life you want to wake up to. Pursue that which makes your heart soar. Whether that be the most boring-sounding major at your university or going to space, being a wedding planner or starting your own company—do it.

Is there anything more exhilarating than this moment? We stand on the precipice of youth, about to spread wings and leap into the broad sky that is self-sufficiency.

We’re on our way to become our own selves. We each get to become a full person now. I wish you, my classmates, success in that highest endeavor, above all others, and I thank, with the deepest sincerity, every person in the stands who brought us to this moment.

As we bid farewell to this campus, and one another, and our homes, and our childhoods, I commend our efforts of the last four years, and express my full faith in all the triumphs and all the beauty our futures hold, if only we will seek it.

At the Movies: ‘Rocketman’ Makes a Blast

E

lton John is one of those musical artists whose songs are likeable even if you’re not big on his genre or era. While watching Dexter Fletcher’s musical biopic, Rocketman, this weekend, I found myself singing along to every song, even though I’ve never considered myself a huge fan.

To dodge the humorous comparisons between Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) and musical parody Walk Hard (2007), Fletcher and team were smart enough to make Elton’s origin story a full-fledged musical fantasy.

The singer/pianist is portrayed by English actor Taron Egerton, who successfully pulls off double duty with acting and singing. Because of his colorful persona, Elton tells a tall taleesque recount of his backstory. Right away, the narrative lets us know that the movie is going to fudge with timeline accuracies, like all biopics seem to do, for whatever reason. We get 10-year-old Elton (Matthew Illesley) singing “I Want Love” and “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” with his family and neighbors, even though the songs were co-written with his longtime lyricist, Bernie Taupin.

As a casual fan, Rocketman is a lot of fun. The musical numbers are impressive artistically and performance-wise.

Egerton’s performance, whether musically or dramatically, is the best part of the feature. But, of course, some will probably have trouble accepting the high liberties taken with the script.

For full enjoyment, it’s best to go into Rocketman the same way one would with All That Jazz (1979) or Funny Girl (1968). Not every musical biopic can be as great as Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980) or Walk the Line (2005), but at least Rocketman provides quality escapism for two hours. DP

Ocean in the Eyes of Children

here will be more plastic than fish in the oceans by 2050, according to World Economic Forum. Intergovernmental SciencePolicy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) reported in May, around 1 million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction, many within decades, more than ever before in human history. Youth are speaking up, rightly, on the environment they’re inheriting.

“The pollution is symbolized by a sick-looking fish with a soda can body, to represent ‘sashimi’ on the plate that the food we eat ends up on. Around it are garnishes for the ‘sashimi’ which are trash, such as cigarette butts, plastic water bottles, and so on.

The ‘soy sauce’ is made of petroleum, and there are ‘lemon’ garnishes of old tires. I used acrylic paint to emphasize the fish along with several other ‘garnishes’ on watercolor. I named this piece ‘Trashimi’ to reflect on the items from the sea that we will eventually consume, but also as ‘Trashme’ because the trash that we humans throw away just come back to us in a cycle.”—Jennifer Kim, 13

“Having a negative outlook toward pollution, I decided, will not help us at all. In order to make progress in any task, we must first adopt a positive outlook.

My artwork, created with color pencil, expresses the relationship between optimism and result. The people in the center, whose heads are full of clean water and living fish, represent those who view our ocean’s future positively. Those who have a positive outlook of our future ocean, whose heads are filled with beliefs that the ocean can improve, consequently endeavor to tidy and clean the beach, as can be seen with the cleaning supplies they hold. However, those on the left and right sides, whose heads are filled with negative opinions about the future ocean, do not take action, and as a result, their environment deteriorates.”—Fiona Luo, 13

Stepping Into Creativity Dana Point Hosts ArtFest in Lantern District with Nearly 100 Artists Spotlighted

he Dana Point ArtFest returned to the community on Sunday, June 2 with nearly 100 artists being represented on Del Prado, between Golden Lantern and Ruby Lantern.

This year, live performance artist Thomas Clark returned, and an interactive Kids’ Fun Zone made its debut at the largest free community arts event in Dana Point.

ArtFest, formerly known as the Dana Point Art Walk, is held in June each year to encourage artists, musicians and merchants to connect with the community through the arts and to promote creativity and an art movement in the city of Dana Point. DP

June gloom holds, but lack of wind brings promise

T

he June gloom has had a hold on the weather, but other conditions have counteracted it for a rise on the coasts at Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said that the lack of wind has helped to not spread the cooler water temperatures, and the coastal waters have perked up on the half-day trips. Bass fishing picked up with some fly-line fishing on the surface and a strong reaction to the chum the boats have laid down. Sheephead and sculpin joined bass in the halfday counts.

The three-quarter-day trips are still fishing deep to the bottom. Woolley said that rockfish move around more than people expect, and the rockfish had been pushed from the hard rocks into the mud. Boats had to use side scan to locate the fish, and

Goetz Crowned South Coast League Softball MVP Dana Hills senior pitcher Terra Goetz was named the Most Valuable Player in the South Coast League in the year-end softball awards.

The William Jessup-bound righthander pitched the lion’s share of the innings this season for the Dolphins (96.1 of 146) and posted a 1.24 ERA with 54 strikeouts.

Dana Hills also had three players named first-team All-South Coast League: juniors Margo Hopper and Jackie Stillwell and sophomore Piper Tago.

Once again, the Fury made its way over to San Clemente Island, but the catches are down there recently. Woolley said there is “still good signal over there,” but there haven’t been as many yellowtail catches as the previous few days. Still, the trip was able to get a variety of bottom fish, calico bass, sheephead and bonito.

The Fury is now also offering 1 ½-day trips with options depending on how the fish trend. It can still head to San Clemente Island if the yellowtail is the best option, but it could also head south if the signs for bluefin are good. The Fury has Mexican permits available if they do go for the bluefin.

that jumping off their board and diving deep is the best way to avoid annihilation. In fact, ditching your board can put other surfers in the water in jeopardy. Ditching your board in the open face of a wave can cut off a riding surfer, forcing him to bail to avoid running over your board. And ditching a board in the whitewater means that it could hit other people paddling out and injure them. Plus, the leash could snap, and the board could wash in to the beach, meaning you’re going to be going for a swim. If you’re caught inside and it’s pumping, sorry, you’re just going to have to hold onto your board and take your beating.

A Summertime Surf Etiquette Primer

s this week’s paper hits the streets, the local Dana Point and San Clemente public schools will be enjoying their first taste of summer vacation. That means long days at the beach, warm water and plenty of waves. It also means that the area’s surf spots will be more crowded than they usually are.

In this day and age of surf schools, cheap Costco boards, electric bikes, streaming surf cams, and all the rest, there are more people in the water enjoying the sport and lifestyle of surfing than ever before. That’s a good thing. But it also means that everybody needs to be a little more cognizant of the long-standing rules and etiquette that help give our most impacted lineups some semblance of order. There can be a lot of nuances in highly competitive lineups, but whether you’re a beginner or a pro, here are six rules to keep you honest this summer:

1. Don’t Drop in on Another Surfer

This is pretty much the cardinal rule in surfing. More arguments and fights start in the water when somebody gets “burned” than for any other reason. If somebody is already up and riding on a wave, do not—I repeat, do not—take off in front of them.

It’s rude, it’s disrespectful, and if you’re a kook and blow the take-off, somebody can get seriously hurt. All you have to do is look over your shoulder when you’re paddling for a wave. If someone is on their

feet and coming at you, show some selfrestraint and just pull back.

To preserve order in the lineup, everyone has to be willing to get in the rotation and take turns. Don’t be

This may mean that you get mowed down by the whitewater, but that’s a way better alternative than taking the nose of a board to the skull or a fin to the back.

4. Hold onto Your Board

The thing about surfing is that it’s supposed to be fun. It’s supposed to be an escape from the trials and tribulations of life on land. Don’t be so selfish that you take that experience away from somebody. Waves are free. Almost always if you give a wave to somebody in the lineup, you’ll be rewarded with an even better wave out the back. You’ll be much more stoked after your session if you’re positive, smiling and sharing waves than if you’re being selfish and only looking out for yourself.

6. Support Local Surf Businesses

When at all possible, shop local for your surf gear. Buy a board from a local shaper; Costco doesn’t need your money. Go into a local surf shop and buy your wetsuit; don’t rely on Amazon to ship it to you. There are a lot of small, independent surf businesses and craftsmen out there trying to support their families, so show them some love and shop local. DP

here are a lot of surf contests that groms can participate in these days, but none are quite like the Cosmic Creek Surf Festival, sponsored by surfwear brand Vissla. An ode to the groovy days of the ’70s, when singlefins and twins prowled the lineup, the event celebrated its 21st year at Salt Creek last weekend.

vision; and when it came to the groms, the 14-and-unders were more frothed out than anyone. Psyching each other up before the final on Sunday, Zach Perry, Rex Hennings, Callan Emery, Jacob Crouse and Josh Johnson hit the water like rockets. With a clean, threefoot south swell wrapping in off the point, the boys had a ball.

Riding heavy, old, vintage boards, it was a great experience for all of them.

Today’s surfboards have come a long way over the last 30-plus years, but to sample what it was like “back in the day,” it’s going to do wonders for their styles, approaches and appreciation for where surfing’s been and where it’s going. In the end, it was Perry edging out the field to take a well-deserved win. DP
