The agency is sending samples to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for confirmation, and results are pending.

As worries over a potential coronavirus pandemic continue to grow, local medical and government officials are encouraging the community to remain calm, stay informed and, most importantly, wash your hands.

“The more you look for something, the more likely you are to find it,” Dr. Nichole Quick, County Health Officer for the County of Orange, said in a press release. “Now that our Public Health Laboratory is able to perform COVID-19 testing, we expect to see more cases here in Orange County.

Our residents should take everyday precautions to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses like covering your coughs and sneezes, avoiding touching your face, and washing your hands frequently.”

As of Tuesday, March 3, a total of 60 coronavirus cases had been detected and tested in the U.S., according to the CDC. Another 45 cases represented the passengers aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan who were repatriated to the U.S. Out of the 60 cases, the CDC noted that 22 were travel-related, 11 were spread from person-to-person, and the remaining 27 were still under investigation.

A dozen states have reported cases of COVID-19, with most of them being found on the West Coast, particularly in Northern California and Washington, Los Angeles Times reported on March 3.

Dr. Rodney Rohde is a clinical and medical laboratory professional with a specialization in virology. He is also the Associate Dean for Research for the College of Health Professions at Texas State University.

“Nothing is really considered an accurate case (of coronavirus) without a confirmed laboratory test,” Rodhe said.

“We see numbers like 90,000 . . . but it all depends on case definition.”

Some definitions could include those who show all clinical symptoms versus a lab-confirmed test result.

“Once officials started counting fever, respiratory issues, etc., logistically, we’re going to see an explosion of cases overnight,” Rohde said. “We may not know for certain if these numbers are accurate for a while, because it takes time to test every case.”

According to Johns Hopkins University, as of March 3, there were roughly 93,000 confirmed global cases of coronavirus COVID-19. About 48,000 of those have recovered. About 3,000 have died.

In South Orange County, there have been no confirmed reports of the virus.

On Tuesday, Dr. Jim Keany, an emergency physician and former chief of staff at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, said there were two patients suspected of the coronavirus at the hospital; one tested negative, and the other was well enough to be quarantined at home with results of the test still pending.

Keany and local government officials have said they are working to stay on top of the situation through coordination with county health agencies.

Officials from Dana Point, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano stated that they’re closely monitoring the coronavirus situation as the issue continues to develop and evolve.

In emailed statements from the cities of San Clemente and San Juan, both cities stated that information will be provided and updated to respective staff and residents as it becomes available.

“Health officials advise to maintain awareness, have discussions on preparedness within your business and at home, and inform the public on the situation and any countermeasures,” the city of San Clemente stated in its email.

San Juan City Manager Ben Siegel similarly wrote that “we are communicating with City employees and providing information from the Centers for Disease Control on proactive steps that employees

can take to minimize the potential exposure to the virus, what the symptoms are of the disease, and where they can turn for accurate information on the topic.”

Dr. Keany said hospitals similar to his and emergency rooms “are always prepared and ready for potential infections and infectious diseases to enter our hospital. . . .

Every year, we have flu outbreaks, so every year is a year to prepare for stuff like this.”

Noting the serious public health issue, Keany said the hospital is doing what it can to control it by having medical staff brush up on protocols so that everyone understands how to react if a case arises.

“So, we really haven’t updated any protocols yet. We have standard infections prevention . . . it’s just a matter of making sure everyone is complying and using them correctly,” he said, adding: “What we know, if you have a confirmed case, you need to add a higher level of protection; that’s the only difference that’s come out.”

For instance, he said, staff is required to wear a special mask called an N95 respirator around an individual who tests positive for COVID-19.

According to the CDC, the tight-fitting mask filters out at least 95% of airborne particles, reducing the “wearer’s exposure to particles including small particle aerosols and large droplets.”

Keany emphasized that the coronavirus isn’t a death sentence.

“You would get the sense from the way that people are anxious of this that it’s a death sentence, and it’s not,” he said. “As far as we can tell from the numbers, 98% do just fine, and the 2% are people who aren’t doing well to begin with,” such as the elderly.

On March 3, the LA Times reported that the World Health Organization put the mortality rate for the virus at 3.4%.

According to Keany, the hospital has seen an influx of individuals worried they might have the virus despite not showing any signs or symptoms. Unless you meet

Mike Killebrew Confirmed as City Manager

by Council THE LATEST: During its March 3 meeting, the Dana Point City Council confirmed the appointment of Mike Killebrew as city manager and approved a three-year employment agreement with him.

Killebrew is the first resident chosen to lead the city. He has held the role of Dana Point’s Assistant City Manager and Director of Administrative Services for more than 12 years.

“As a longtime resident of Dana Point, I can think of no greater honor than to now serve as city manager and work alongside the leadership of our mayor and city council in fulfilling the vision for this great city and its residents,” said Killebrew.

Prior to the council vote, multiple people spoke during public comment in support of Killebrew’s proposed promotion, including Terry Rifkin, who serves as chair for the Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group and is a member of the Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Club.

“Mike is a rainmaker,” Rifkin said. “A person whose influence can initiate progress or ensure success. Mike is a force.

He does not have an ego, and he does not have to take credit.”

Prior to joining the City of Dana Point, Killebrew served as Chief Financial Officer, controller and as an auditor for the City of Long Beach. He was named 2019 Dana Point Citizen of the Year, and has been a dedicated leader in local government as well as local nonprofit and civic organizations. “Mike’s strong character, values and experience will ensure Dana Point is an amazing place to live and a sought-after choice for business. He leads by example, and I am excited to work with Mike on serving our community,” said Mayor Richard Viczorek.

However, not all in the council meeting shared the approving sentiment. During council discussion, Councilmember Debra Lewis expressed her concerns for the city’s management style.

“Unlike the majority, I believe that being brought up and steeped in the city’s culture for so long actually works against Mr. Killebrew as an appropriate choice,” Lewis said. “I, looking forward, will be looking for management that is proactive and apolitical. These are two things I have had concerns about in the past.”

Lewis stated her belief was that good management anticipates future financial issues and “sounds the alarm” when expenses may come close to exceeding revenue.

“If you look at our (Comprehensive Annual Financial Report), you will see that our expenses and revenue have been increasing in a rate where expenses exceed revenue at some point with the crossover. I believe in the past, the city did not issue warnings loudly enough and publicly enough that we are now on the precipice of,” Lewis said.

“These are the kinds of things I want to hear loudly and clearly. This is coming, here is what we can do, here is what the ramifications are if we don’t do things.”

Lewis pointed to the city not raising fees for 20 years. According to hired consultants, the city potentially left $2 million a year on the table. She also emphasized her belief that city management should remain apolitical.

Killebrew did not have comment in response to Lewis’s statements behind the dais.

Toll Road Extensions off the Table, Los Patrones Route Recommended THE LATEST: A toll road through San Clemente apparently will not be pursued.

Officials with the Transportation Corridor Agencies confirmed that out of all of the proposals for South County traffic relief, Alternative 22—an arterial, un-tolled road— would be the sole alternative that staff will recommend the board of directors to adopt.

The South Country Traffic Relief Effort, which included a series of proposed routes—some of which intended to extend the 241 Toll Road through San Clemente and connect to Interstate 5, while another would have extended Crown Valley Dana Point Times March 6-12, 2020

Parkway to the 241—were assembled to “improve north-south regional mobility in South Orange County and accommodate regional travel demand,” according to the California Department of Transportation.

On Tuesday morning, March 3— California’s Primary Election Day—Assemblymember Bill Brough posted this announcement on his political Facebook page: “It looks like a Toll Road through San Clemente is dead.”

“An email sent to my office states that TCA will vote to advance option 22, the Los Patrones extension, as an un-tolled highway, and that ‘no other alternatives would be further studied,’ ” Brough wrote.

TCA officials confirmed Alternative 22 would be exclusively recommended to the San Joaquin Hills (SJHTCA) and Foothill/ Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency (F/ETCA) Board of Directors.

Alternative 22, a road alignment plan that Orange County Board Supervisor and Chairperson Lisa Bartlett had previously sponsored, would connect the new Los Patrones Parkway from Cow Camp Road in Rancho Mission Viejo to Avenida La Pata, running along the east side of the Prima Deschecha Landfill. It would remain an un-tolled road.

The initial stages of the environmental process to study the proposed 241 Toll Road extensions through San Clemente and parts of San Juan Capistrano began in November, when Caltrans began to accept public comment and review of the SCTRE. The public-comment period closed on Feb. 10 after being open for 94 days.

“Caltrans received 1,650 comments,” said Sarah King, media relations manager for TCA. “In the scoping document, 10 alternatives were proposed. Once the document was closed for public comment, the 10 alternatives (one of which had four variations) go through a screening criteria.”

According to King, a traffic analysis was conducted on the alternatives and the public comments were all reviewed and analyzed.

“After the review process, Alternative 22 (un-tolled) was identified as the alternative that would move forward for further consideration,” King said.

Dana Point City Councilmember Joe Muller is a board director for the OCTA and the F/ETCA, as well as an alternate director on SJHTCA. He said he’s spent the last year-and-a-half working to enhance communication between TCA and OCTA. “My main goal when I was elected to OCTA was to get TCA and OCTA working together,” Muller said. “Un-tolled Alternative 22, the Ortega Highway Widening project and HOV widening from Pico to the county line are great examples of what can be accomplished when leaders lead.”

These three projects should meet traffic relief needs for the next 50 years, Muller added.

The proposal could potentially impact the cities of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano. In a prepared response, the city of San Clemente said it was pleased to learn of the TCA’s recommendation.

“The City is encouraged that (the TCA)

will be recommending to their board consideration of an extension to Los Patrones Parkway as a non-tolled County arterial only for further environmental review,” the city of San Clemente said in a statement.

San Juan Mayor Troy Bourne issued a statement, saying the city of San Juan Capistrano was very pleased to learn that the TCA will only be advancing the nontolled Los Patrones extension alignment for continued study.

“My colleagues on the city council and I committed to our constituents that we would stridently oppose any alignments that would negatively impact San Juan Capistrano,” Bourne said in an email. “To that end, we have been working with TCA to focus on a viable alternative to enhance the region’s mobility needs, and we are confident that the proposed arterial highway concept will achieve that purpose.”

Bourne said he fully supports Caltrans’ efforts to construct the “Lower Ortega Highway Widening Project,” and he is eager to continue discussions with Caltrans, TCA, OCTA and the County to identify funding and advance that long-overdue public safety and traffic relief project.”

According to a statement from Supervisor Bartlett’s office, Bartlett is committed to ensuring all three of these agencies work cooperatively with the County of Orange and cities within the project areas.

“After years of careful planning and listening to the public, together with our partner transportation agencies, we have developed a balanced transportation improvement plan,” Bartlett’s statement said.

Irvine Mayor Christina Shea says she’s sensitive to how a route through San Clemente could have impacted residents and the community’s way of life. She serves as the chair for the F/ETCA Board.

“We are not going with Alternative 14, which hugely would have impacted open space and quality of life in San Clemente,” Shea said. “Our processes work. We needed to get through the process, and I stand by that. I’m very pleased we’ve come to a position of peace and a point of success.”

City and Monarch Hills Association Host Emergency Preparedness Training THE LATEST: There were 22 Basic CERT Academy graduates who spent the entire weekend attending classes and participating in emergency preparedness practical application exercises. It was the first Dana Point CERT Academy of 2020.

Each participant learned Light Search and Rescue techniques, First Aid, Fire Suppression, and other disaster preparedness information.

“The CERT program empowers the

participants with the information and skills to prepare themselves, their families and community for any emergency that may occur,” said James Shadle, Senior Management Analyst, Emergency Services Coordinator, City of Dana Point. “It is dedicated persons like these that make our communities, neighborhoods and the County of Orange a safer place to live and play. County Issues Warnings for Bacteria Levels at Doheny State Beach THE LATEST: The Orange County Health Care Agency has alerted residents that ocean water bacteria levels in Dana Point are high enough to make you sick.

Bacterial levels in ocean and bay recreational waters exceeded health standards in Dana Point, from Puerto Place to 500 feet downcoast of the San Juan Creek at Doheny State Beach. However, there were no closures of ocean, harbor or bay water at the time of publication.

Bacterial levels at outlets where urban runoff mixes with ocean receiving waters exceeded health standards 75 feet up and down the coast of Salt Creek.

“In other beach areas, the Environmental Health staff advises swimmers that levels of bacteria can rise significantly in ocean and bay waters adjacent to storm drains, creeks, and rivers,” an OC Health Care Agency news release states. “Swimmers should also avoid coastal waters impacted by discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers, and beach users should avoid contact with any runoff on the beach during dry or wet weather conditions.”

In the city of Laguna Beach, swimmers were warned to avoid the area 75 feet up and down the coast of Broadway Creek at Laguna Main Beach. Warnings were in place for San Clemente at Pico Drain at the north end of North Beach, and San Clemente, at the San Clemente Pier as of March 3.

According to the Orange County Health Care Agency, water samples are collected at least once a week to five times a week.

Professionals in the Community Invited to be “Principal for a Day” City officials, business owners, law enforcement and a variety of other leaders in the community were invited by Capistrano Unified School District to be a “Principal for a Day” for a few hours in elementary, middle and high schools within the area.

Afterward, participants gathered for a luncheon to share their experiences on Feb. 28, where San Clemente High School culinary arts students catered the event.

The district stages Principal for a Day events to reflect the partnership between the schools and every facet of the community, said Ryan Burris, chief communications officer for the district, which provides instruction to roughly 47,000 students on 63 campuses, encompassing 200 square miles.

Orange County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Davida Tidwell of Dana Point Police Services spoke about her experience at the luncheon.

“I had kids running up to me asking to take selfies with me,” Tidwell said at the event. “It was the best experience ever. I just can’t thank Capistrano Unified enough for allowing this opportunity for a sheriff’s deputy to come into a school.

The principal and staff are working as team to bring these children together, which is going to impact our future here in Orange County.”

smart meters at 2,000 homes in its service area—with plans to continue installing in batches for all residential customers through 2021.

The state-of-the-art water technology will provide customers with hourly water usage data, the ability to view and pay bills, and sign up for leak notifications, whether they’re home or not. Hourly water usage is available 24/7 through a secure online customer portal and app, MyWater MNWD. “We want to empower our customers to take control of their water usage in the most convenient way,” said Moulton Niguel President Brian Probolsky. “Instead of waiting for their monthly bill, they can log on to the customer portal, and set up customized notification preferences such as leak alerts or reminders about scheduled service appointments.”

The ability to receive proactive leak notifications can save water and money.

For example, if there’s a high volume of water used in the middle of the night, it could indicate there’s a potential leak at the home. Customers could sign up to receive a leak alert, and if they have signed up to receive push notifications through the MyWater MNWD mobile app, they can receive the notification directly on their phones.

“Traditional water meters log a customer’s total use over a month,” said Moulton Niguel Vice President Duane Cave. “Our smart meter technology can help track unusual water spikes and will allow our customers to avoid unintentional high water consumption, saving them water and money.”

Based on the early success of Moulton

Niguel’s pilot program, the District secured more than $2 million in federal grants from the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation to offer the program to all its customers.

When complete, the District’s smart meter program is expected to conserve 500 million gallons of water every year.

Wisconsin Man Running Through South Orange County to Support Kids with Cancer This April, Peter Halper of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin will begin running across the United States to rally support for kids with cancer.

The route starts in Dana Point and will pass through San Juan Capistrano. Halper’s path will take him through the South Orange County area from April 13-18.

The run is called Emery’s Thunder Run and will be 3,076 miles, coast-to-coast across the United States.

The idea of the run came to him after the loss of his great-niece, Emery Smith, the namesake of the run, a press release said. She passed away at the age of 3 during her battle with neuroblastoma, a type of childhood cancer.

Gala Raises Money for Mandarin Immersion Program Local business, political, and education leaders raised $65,000 on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the 9th annual Fundraising Gala for the Mandarin Immersion Program at Marian Bergeson Elementary School in Laguna Niguel, part of the Capistrano Unified School District.

The gala was hosted at The Hills Hotel in Laguna Hills and included a keynote speech by CUSD Trustee Gila Jones.

The funds will be used to help pay for assistant teacher salaries, Mandarin substitute teachers, and other resources.

The Mandarin Immersion Program seeks to educate students through a blend of instruction in both Mandarin and English.

73rd Assembly Incumbent Likely Unseated; Davies and Rhinehart May Move on to General Election

Assemblymember Bill Brough, a Dana Point resident, apparently will not be a contender in the General Election in November.

While serving his third term for the 73rd Assembly District, Brough came in fourth place out five candidates. As of Thursday, March 5, Laguna Niguel Mayor Laurie Davies, a Republican, took the majority of the votes with 27.76%. Democrat Scott Rhinehart, who formerly worked as a real estate broker and now works for his partner’s business Robert Puleo Design Inc., took 21.91%.

Results have not been certified by the Orange County Registrar of Voters. In fact, as of noon on Thursday, March 5, there were 166,107 ballots left to be counted in Orange County. About 30,000 mail-in ballots arrived on Wednesday and more are expected to come by Friday, March 7. But if the candidates hold their top-two ranking, Davies and Rhinehart will presumably appear on the November ballot.

“It is an honor to service in the Legislature,” Brough told Dana Point Times. “I always fight for what I believe is best for our community. I look forward to the next chapter in my life.”

Brough received 17.80% of the votes, putting him in fourth place after Democrat Chris Duncan. Republican Ed Sachs took fifth place.

“We anticipated there was going to be a fight,” said Rhinehart, who unsuccessfully ran against Brough in 2018. “But we’re very pleased with where we’re at, and we feel very invigorated.”

In a statement prepared Wednesday

morning, Davies said she wanted to thank the volunteers, voters and the other candidates in the 73rd Assembly District election.

“I know each of them put a lot of time and energy into their respective campaigns,” Davies said. “Now, as we move towards November, I plan to share my record and how I believe our community should be represented in Sacramento.”

The results reflect a major shift in Orange County politics. In the 2016 primary election, Brough took 99% of the vote, with his only opponent being a write-in candidate. Brough faces multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and misuse of campaign finance.

While complaints against him go back about a decade, sexual misconduct accusations resurfaced in 2019 when Orange County Supervisor Lisa Bartlett urged the Republican Party of Orange County not to endorse Brough. Bartlett referenced an incident in which she allegedly had to wriggle away from Brough’s grasp at a retirement party.

Multiple accusers followed suit and came forward with additional allegations—all of which Brough has denied.

In August 2019, the California Ethics Commission announced it would investigate Brough's alleged misuse of campaign funds totaling $200,000. He was accused of spending campaign contributions to pay his family’s cell phone bill, take a personal trip to a Boston Red Sox game, among other personal expenditures.

The General Election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3 to determine who will represent the 73rd Assembly District in the California Legislature. DP

Bond Measures for Schools Presumably Defeated

The Capistrano Unified School District looks to have suffered another blow to its plans of renovating local schools on Tuesday, March 3, as a majority of voters in Aliso Viejo, Dana Point, Laguna Niguel and San Clemente reportedly have voted against two regional bond measures for facility improvements.

With all of the vote centers in Orange County reported as of Thursday morning, March 5, nearly 58% of voters (8,036 votes) rejected Measure H, while close to 55% (14,990 votes) opposed Measure I, according to unofficial results from the Orange County Registrar of Voters.

EYE ON DP said there were still about 166,100 ballots left to count. About 509,160 ballots had been cast thus far.

Both measures proposed a $.03 tax levy for every $100 of assessed property value in order “to repair aging classrooms and facilities at schools,” as well as fix other areas, including deteriorating roofs and plumbing and electrical systems, among other things.

Measure H, the bond initiative put before voters in San Clemente (excluding Talega) and Capistrano Beach, was expected to provide the school district with about $120 million—$90 million of which was earmarked for San Clemente High.

On Tuesday, Measure H was presumably defeated, receiving only 42.2% of the vote.

Measure I fared about the same, receiving support from only 45.05% of voters in the rest of Dana Point, Aliso Viejo and Laguna Niguel.

The threshold for measures to pass is 55%.

Had Measure I passed, the district was estimated to receive about $300 million, most of which was earmarked for Dana Hills High School, Aliso Niguel High School and Niguel Hills Middle School.

If Measures H and I had passed, the total estimated debt amount, including interest, was $209 million and $519 million, respectively.

CUSD had previously attempted to secure bond funding for districtwide facility improvements back in 2016, when it proposed its $889 million Measure M bond. That bond measure also failed, getting only 45% approval.

49th Congressional District Sees Close Race for Primary

“We all agree that children shouldn’t be going to school in buildings with maintenance problems, but the fundamental question is: how did we get here, and were bond taxes the right way to solve the problem?” Craig Alexander, a signer against Measure I, said Wednesday.

Alexander said that while he’s grateful the voters appeared to have agreed with his opposition of the bonds, he added that he’s cautiously optimistic of the results and will hold off on celebrating until the Registrar certifies them.

As press time, CUSD was unavailable for comment. DP

The 49th Congressional District primary election was a close race, with Democratic incumbent Mike Levin getting 52.8% of district votes (or 68,498) as of Thursday, March 5. Republican challenger Brian Maryott received 47.2% of district votes (61,212).

The race could essentially be considered a forecast for the general election in November, when the two candidates face off again. The results are early, and votes are still being tallied, according to the Secretary of State website.

Maryott got the lead in Orange County with 55.7% of votes (or 19,388), with Levin getting 44.3% of votes (or 15,449). Levin, however, did better in San Diego County with 55.9% of votes (or 53,049), while Maryott got 44.1% of votes (or 41,824).

Both candidates were in good spirits the day after Super Tuesday.

“I am deeply grateful for all of our volunteers and staff who worked countless hours to help us #KeepThe49th!” Levin said on his Twitter account. “Since I was

sworn in 14 months ago, we've made incredible progress by working across the aisle to strengthen veterans' benefits, protect our environment, and more.”

Levin also said he was optimistic that when all ballots were counted, he would be in a “very strong position to carry our bipartisan message into the general election.”

Reached by phone on March 4, Maryott said he was pleased with how Super Tuesday went. Maryott said he did well with independents.

“We’re going to beat Mike,” Maryott said.

As for the presidential primaries, Donald Trump won California in the Republican primary with 92.5% of votes (or more than 1.4 million). Bernie Sanders won the Democratic primary in California with 33.8% of votes (more than 1 million).

In Orange County, Sanders received 35.77% of votes (or 83,236) for the Democratic primary, while Trump got 93.71% of votes (or 185,356). All unofficial presidential primary results were as of March 5. DP

How is the tour going, and what can the fans at The Coach House expect?

Betts: Man, the shows have been awesome. The band is really playing at a high level night after night. We are really looking forward to playing in Southern California.

Allman: Fans at The Coach House can expect high energy, passion and lots of guitar playing.

We play songs from our debut record, Allman Brothers catalog and from our other heroes.

Last year at the Doheny Blues Festival, the band met with the high school music students via Music Preserves Foundation. Why is taking time for young people important?

Betts: It’s always great to meet with young people and help inspire them to follow their dreams like we have followed ours. That’s what it’s all about.

Allman: The next generation of musicians will always be of major importance to us, because they will be keeping the art form of live music alive someday. We constantly have young artists open shows for us, sit in with us, etc. We do everything possible to foster growth and encourage the youth to play with spirit. Our time with those students was wonderful. It’s very fulfilling to inspire others.

A plant-based diet is not just about Christian devotion. It was amazing to see how RH Dana ENF Music teacher Valery Fischer and staff integrate music and songs throughout the day to teach the Exceptional Needs students reading, days of the week, colors, meal time, etc.

The students, 95% nonverbal, use multimodal communication methods like signing and nodding, and the music and repetition really connects with the kids. I have deep appreciation for the educators and students and the perspective they gave me.

On Stage at The Coach House: Tinsley Ellis

insley Ellis has brought his rocking style of blues music to The Coach House in the past, and when he takes the stage once more on Sunday, March 8, he expects the night to be another fun one because Jimmie Vaughan is also performing.

“It’s a comfortable place to perform,” Ellis said. “Us and Jimmie Vaughan, that’s a home run.”

Ellis’ most recent album is Ice Cream in Hell. The unique title comes from playing around the common expression of people in hell wanting ice water and related sayings. Ellis also felt strongly enough about the title track—the last song to be added on the album—to make the phrase front and center.

“The goal was to make a real guitarcentric and rocking album,” Ellis said.

That description is true—the songs “Last One to Know” and “Don’t Know Beans” are lively enough to make the listener start dancing. Ellis talks about B.B. King and Muddy Waters when discussing the blues, influences clearly heard in his music.

Ellis saw B.B. King when he was a teenager and later toured with the

legendary bluesman, whom he called “very gracious.” Ellis got into the blues through the British Invasion music that was on the radio in the 1960s, a style itself influenced by blues.

From there, Ellis listened to Cream and then the blues itself.

“That let me know where it was all coming from,” Ellis said.

Ellis said The Coach House treats performing musicians very well, and though he agreed The Coach House can be intimate as other musicians have noted, Ellis has played smaller spaces such as jazz clubs. He was born in Atlanta and grew up in southern Florida.

Ellis enters a comfort zone when he steps on stage, and during the March 8 performance, the songs will be a mix of new material from Ice Cream in Hell and his older songs. Ellis is curious to see who will be in the audience, and what they’re looking to hear.

“We have a lot of friends there at the venue and in the audience,” Ellis said.

“We’re looking to make it a party.”

The March 8 concert at The Coach House is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Plastic Whale in Last Resort O

n March 7, Dana Point will start celebrating the 49th Festival of Whales, the world’s longest-running whale festival. More than 50,000 people are expected to visit the “Dolphin & Whale Watching Capital of the World,” which Dana Point officially became in 2019. This is a proud moment for Dana Point and Orange County.

But, I’m worried. How much more pollution will the whales have to endure from the festival? Plastics, toxics, oil leaks from boats, etc. “How can we celebrate the whales when we’re adding to the destruction of their home in the process?” said Bill Lane, Dana Point Ocean Water Quality Subcommittee member.

The harbor belongs to the County. It doesn’t have the same environmental policies as the City of Dana Point.

Polystyrene foam (aka Styrofoam) foodware is OK. Smoking in public space is OK. Many residents asked the County to sync the policies with the City. (Actually, when County Supervisor Lisa Bartlett was a Dana Point Councilmember, she voted for the polystyrene foam foodware ban in 2012.) According to World Economic Forum, there will be more plastics than fish in the oceans by 2050. I would think the County would do everyCOMMUNITY, thing to avoid a harbor like that.

“For many people in the coastal region of Peru, being able to see a humpback whale is not a rare occurrence, and has created a lucrative eco-tourism industry,” said Dafne Murillo, grade 9, of Lima, Peru. “Ironically, Peruvian beaches are some of the most polluted in the world. I’ve been involved in two annual beach cleanup projects, and I’ve been stunned by the countless bottles and plastic bags that are spread across the shoreline of Lima alone. This inspired my piece. People can appreciate the whales, yet fail to realize that by continuing littering the sea with their plastic waste, they are responsible for the harm of marine wildlife through ingestion or entanglement.”

“What if the water was so polluted that fish were forced into fishing nets and bottles to survive?” said Timothy Kim, grade 7, of Glendale, CA. “While doing research on water pollution, I found out that the most common articles of trash thrown away in the ocean were cigarettes and cigarette filters. I also found out about the dangers of the fish eating trash, either poisoning or staying within the fish until we eat it, as well as how small pieces of microscopic trash can enter fish and into our bodies when we eat them.”

Hoiyin Ip is often recognized on the street as the plastic lady for her cleanup work. But she likes to think of herself as a guardian of the ocean. She is often reminded of a quote by former California Coastal Commission Executive Director Peter Douglas: “The coast is never saved. Harkey, Donahoe close careers with historic State placings

he Dana Hills wrestling season came to a close with two historic performances from Dolphins seniors from Thursday, Feb. 27 to Saturday, Feb. 29 in Bakersfield.

Josh Harkey was the first Dana Hills boys state podium finisher in 13 years, and Layla Donahoe produced the highest placement by a Dana Hills girls wrestler in program history at the three-day CIF State Championships at the Mechanics Bank Area.

Harkey capped off his high school career as one of the most decorated wrestlers in Dana Hills history.

Dana Wharf Fish Report Rockfish opens, Halibut Derby nears close

T

he Halibut Derby enters its final month, and seasonal catch restrictions have been lifted at Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said that the Dana Wharf fleet “rode the sculpin out to the very end” during the winter closure season that ended on Sunday, March 1. From Jan. 1 through Feb. 29, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife closes off catches of sheephead, whitefish, lingcod and rockfish to boat-based anglers.

Dana Wharf hit the sculpin up to the limits over that winter season, including a strong final day on Saturday, Feb. 29.

When the restrictions opened on Sunday, Woolley said they had boats head out to hit the rockfish opening day, and the boats did well on rockfish and sheephead before the weather forced the boats to return to port.

On the half-day trips, bass continued to provide good action. There were nice sandbass catches in deeper waters, and the calico bass remained strong in the kelp and along the coast. Woolley said flylined sardines, dropper loops and artificial lures all assisted in catches last week.

Woolley said the halibut have shown better over the past few weeks, and that’s good as the annual Halibut Derby hits the homestretch.

The new leader on the derby board is Cher Owens with a 22-pound, five-ounce catch. That topped the previous leader and now second-place catch of Omar Ozgur at 20 pounds, five ounces. There are six fish north of 15 pounds on the board, but only 22 of the 25 spots on the leaderboard have been filled.

The top five placers will receive a cash prize starting at $1,500 for first place, and the top 25 anglers will earn a spot in the free Halibut Derby Fish-Off on April 5, which also comes with a $500 cash prize for the winner.

Harkey posted two more wins by decision, 6-4 and 7-2, to advance to the consolation semifinals, but the senior was downed by a decision win in a high-scoring match, 21-11. Harkey wrestled for fifth place and took a narrow decision win, 3-2, to claim a victory in his final match for Dana Hills.

In the girls 160-pound bracket, Donahoe placed in the top 16 for the highest girls finish in Dolphins history.

Donahoe claimed her second straight CIF-SS Southern Regional silver on Feb. 15 and finished seventh at the CIF-SS Championships for a second consecutive season to qualify for the state tournament.

At last season’s state meet, Donahoe lost both of her matches, which the senior said was because of a mistake. This season, Donahoe corrected that mistake right out of the gate.

Donahoe claimed victory by fall in one minute and 56 seconds in the first round to earn a second-round match against the No. 2 seed at 160 pounds. However, the No. 2 seed validated her ranking to defeat Donahoe by fall in one minute and 21 seconds.

In the consolation bracket, Donahoe got back on her feet with a win by decision, 8-0, but the senior wrestled her final match as a Dolphin in the ensuing round, falling in a one-point decision, 8-7. DP

Gomez Wins Big in Morro Bay

SUP world champ shifts gears to win her first-ever WSL event

I

t was a big weekend for San Clemente surfing at the SLO Cal Open in Monterey Bay, as a pair of local ladies finished 1-2 in the final.

Taking her first-ever WSL victory, Izzi Gomez dug deep to hold off an in-form Sawyer Lindblad on the Central Coast. A five-time stand-up paddle world champion, Gomez is no stranger to standing atop a podium, but nonetheless, this was a big moment in the 20-year-old’s young career.

“I’m baffled,” she said, laughing afterward.

“I never expected this, and it’s incredible to win with my brother and mom here. I’m in shock right now, but paddling back out with about a minute and a half left, I saw Sawyer on the inside looking for a score, and I just thought, ‘Please don’t get a wave.’ I just can’t even believe this happened.”

Lindblad was looking to make it two straight victories on the WSL Qualifying Series after winning the SLO CAL Open at Pismo Beach in February. Only 14 years old, she’s already proving to be a threat among

the professional ranks.

“I never would’ve guessed this kind of start, and 2020 has been really good to me so far,” Lindblad said after the competition. “Now I’ll just train harder, surf more and try to keep this momentum going. It’d be insane to see myself toward the top of the rankings at the end of this year, because I really want to get into the higher-rated events next season.”

Up next, Lindblad will turn her attention to the Jack’s Surfboards Pro in Huntington Beach. And there’s more competitive action on tap, as the WSL season is starting to kick into overdrive.

In other Qualifying Series news, the Surfest Newcastle Pro is taking place at Manly Beach in Australia this week. The surf was absolutely pumping in Round 1 as local surfers Patrick Gudauskas, Cole Houshmand, Kei Kobayashi, Jett Schilling and Crosby Colapinto enjoyed the epic conditions and made their heat.

“Surfing in the first round today was a total bonus,” Gudauskas said. “I rocked up and saw it was six foot and barreling and was so happy to surf. an Clemente’s Tanner Sandvig and his fellow competitors in the Mini Grom division left their fears and apprehensions on the beach and took on the daunting overhead surf last weekend in the NSSA contest at the Oceanside Pier.

Windy and wild, it was the kind of day at the beach where you may prefer to be elsewhere, especially for the poor parents huddled up trying to stay warm. But the stoke burns white-hot with Sandvig, who conquered the challenging conditions to win, with his buddy and fellow San Clemente ripper Finn McCarty finishing a very respectable third.

“These little shredders charged overhead, mixed up, windswept surf. Way to power it, groms,” boasted the NSSA’s social media feed.

Tanner’s been on a heater the last few weeks. Before his big win in Oceanside, he chalked up a second-place finish in an NSSA comp at Salt Creek. And before that, he took the win at the Western Surfing Association’s Dana Point Times March 6-12, 2020

Water Visibility and Conditions: 8-12’ Outlook: For Friday, the South/southwest and Northwest swell mix eases to waist to stomach high surf, (2-3’+).

Light west flow in the morning, gradually rise in the afternoon. The old swell combo eases Saturday as new Northwest swell joins in.
