on Energy and Water Development to fund activities that would expedite the removal of spent nuclear fuel at SONGS and decommissioned nuclear plants across the country.

The letter called for $25 million in federal funding to support the development of a (CIS) program at the DOE, complete the necessary applications, and assist with site preparation activities and regional transportation efforts of spent nuclear fuel.

Specifically, Levin requested $10 million for the initiation of a robust CIS program at DOE; $10 million for site preparation activities at Stranded Fuel sites preparing to move spent nuclear fuel to interim storage facilities; and $5 million to support DOE’s efforts to reinitiate Regional Transport compacts and transportation coordination.

Five things Dana Point should know this week Capistrano Beach Now Open to Public, Survey Still Open for Long-term Plan THE LATEST: Capistrano Beach is open to the public again after losing its boardwalk structure to inclement weather and high tides and then undergoing demolition of its basketball court and restrooms.

OC Parks crews were able to restore public access to the beach on Saturday, May 25. The area near the basketball court and boardwalk had been closed off since November.

OC Public Works installed more than 1,000 tons of rocks in place of the boardwalk, and officials had advised the public not to enter the closed-off portion of the beach. Crews brought in 475 sand cubes and installed riprap rock.

“It was important that we were able to reopen the beach for the community in time for the summer,” said Marisa O’Neil, a public information officer for OC Parks.

“That was our short-term goal, and now we can focus on setting some long-term goals based off community feedback.”

As for the long-term plan for the beach, OC Parks now has an online survey available for public input.

According to the project’s webpage on ocparks.com, the agency will be creating a master plan for the long-term vision of Capistrano Beach “with resiliency, safety and accessibility in mind.”

The survey goes on to ask what beach visitors like to do at Capistrano Beach, with a list of options such as picnics or surfing (you can select multiple activities or type in an activity that isn’t listed). It also asks how far visitors live from the site, what mode of transportation is most often used to get to Capistrano Beach and how often. The last question gives survey users the chance to specify which improvements they would like to see.

the sand formation of a helmet, rifle and boots at Baby Beach, Dana Point, in honor of soldiers who have been killed in action.

This sculpture took about 3 ½ hours to create. He had engaged the community to honor lost loved ones by placing a flag at the sculpture. There were more than 100 flags placed on Memorial Day, each with the name of a loved one.

Bellamy’s sculptures have drawn attention in the community before. Most recently, Bellamy was commissioned to create a proposal sand sculpture for a man asking his girlfriend to marry him in May. He created a Mother’s Day sculpture depicting flowers and, for Easter, Bellamy sculpted a 12-foot crucifix, with a likeness of Jesus nailed to it, on the same beach.

“I am grateful to all of our servicemen and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice,” Bellamy said. “Every Memorial Day, I’m mindful of those who have given their lives for us. My father was a veteran, so this day is important to me, and I’m glad I could share gratitude with the community.”

Bellamy’s father, Maj. Jack Bellamy, served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He passed away 23 years ago.

“Everything I’ve envisioned, I’ve been able to sculpt,” he told Dana Point Times earlier this year. “It’s a God-given gift, and I’m going to continue carrying out what God tells me to do.”—LB

A workshop to gather public input on the budget was held during the previous council meeting on Tuesday, May 21.

“The proposed budget is balanced and shows surpluses for both fiscal years. This surplus is due to the city council’s focus on efficiencies within city operations that include limiting the growth of staffing costs, improvements in projected revenues, and a focus on priority-based budgeting,” it states on the City of Dana Point’s webpage for the budget proposal.

The budget would provide expansion of outreach programs focused on reducing homelessness, a reduction in the number of executive management positions, and tackles unfunded pension liabilities.

The budget also outlines an initiative for a comprehensive update to the city’s General Plan that governs land uses. A General Plan update has not been completed in 30 years.

THE LATEST: A handful of high school graduates from Dana Hills High School, San Clemente High School and San Juan Hills High School were awarded with scholarships as part of each school’s respective Awards Night on Thursday, May 23.

The Democratic Women of South Orange County presented the scholarships to seven graduating seniors, recognizing them for “their commitment to promoting Democratic ideals in their community.”

From Dana Hills High, the group awarded scholarships to Lauren West and Kieran “Niko” Frost—who was unable to attend the awards ceremony. At San Clemente High, Ryan Baxter, Peyton Gadbury and Landon Russell received awards. And at San Juan Hills High, Celia Aguilar and Hannah Hughitt were presented with scholarships.

“They surpassed our expectations of what we envisioned for this scholarship; their ability to mobilize individuals, find common ground and work with others to create positive change in the community is something we should all aspire to,” DWSOC President Kim Anderson said in a press release.

The club received 17 applications for this year’s DWSOC Scholarship Program, as the students competed for up to $1,000 in awards. The applicants were asked to write an essay on topics that included “What does Democracy mean to you? And how do you want to be the Change you Wish to see in the World?”

Ever Played Golf in a Flak Jacket? Sign up for 5th Marine Regiment Support Group Event The Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group is hosting the 10th Annual Combat Golf Tournament on June 10 to help raise money to aid the U.S. Marines, Sailors and families of the 5th Marine Regiment. Funding will also go toward service members at the Wounded Warrior Battalion West at Camp Pendleton.

In this scramble-format tournament at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, participants will have to sidestep “snipers,” tiptoe through “minefields” and obstacle courses, and try taking a swing while wearing a flak jacket and helmet.

Golfers will finish the day off collecting raffle prizes and enjoying a gourmet dinner and awards ceremony.

Entry fee is $200 ($225 after June 1) to participate in the event or to sponsor a Marine or Wounded Warrior in the tournament.

Check-in starts at 9 a.m. and the tournament begins at 11 a.m. If you are unable to play in the tournament, you can still attend the awards ceremony and dinner. “Hot Ticket Donors” include Jack’s Restaurant, the Harbor Grill, Westwind Sailing, StillWater Spirits & Sounds, and Waterman’s Harbor. Mike Levin Meets with Constituents in San Clemente Rep. Mike Levin, D-CA, met with dozens of constituents in San Clemente on Wednesday, May 29, as part of his ongoing series to sit down with residents over cups of coffee.

Holding his latest “Coffee with your Congressman” event at Café Calypso, Levin, who represents California’s 49th Congressional District, encompassing a stretch of cities from San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point to Carlsbad and Del Mar, answered a range of questions regarding his policies in office.

Andrew Schorr, a Carlsbad resident and the co-founder of Patient Power, an online resource for cancer information, said he wanted to speak with Levin about healthcare issues and drug costs. Schorr gushed over the freshman congressman’s monthly event, expressing appreciation for Levin being available to district residents.

While much of the discussion among guests remained cordial, one conversation turned testy when San Clemente resident Jim Bieber grilled Levin over his support for the “Green New Deal,” the resolution House Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, introduced to address climate change.

Bieber said Levin wouldn’t respond to his questions when he asked “how much (the Green New Deal) would cost” and “if the gasoline engine had not been invented, what would the temperature (of the planet) be?”

Levin responded by telling Bieber he wasn’t interested in having a combative discussion. Later, Levin did explain his position on the U.S. investing in clean energy technologies while addressing a question on what the sustainable population of Earth should be—a question from Carlsbad resident Gregg Ferry, who was sitting next to Bieber during the previous exchange.

“Either we will lead on this issue or we will follow,” Levin said, noting that “a suite of new technologies” is bound to change the way the U.S. consumes energy and moves goods.

“It’s going to require a lot of innovation,” Levin said, continuing the thought.

“The question is whether we’re going to take the steps necessary to innovate in this country, to lead in this new industrial revolution, which I would argue is the greatest wealth creation opportunity that we have currently.”

Found in Translation How Two Afghan Interpreters and One City Councilmember Built a Long-term Friendship

D

ana Point City Councilmember Jamey Federico first met Farid Zahiri and Nader Malikzadai in a war zone in 2012. Seven years later, Federico welcomed Zahiri and Malikzadai as special guests in the council chambers during a council meeting.

Federico, who had served in the military for more than 20 years, was stationed in Lashkar Gah in Afghanistan to advise the Afghan military leaders. Zahiri and Malikzadai were hired as interpreters—they were only 21 and 19 years old, respectively, at the time.

“We needed interpreters who could withstand high-pressure situations, and Zahiri and Malikzadai were the men for the job,” Federico said. He then brought Zahiri and Malikzadai from the combat outposts in Taghaz to the headquarters in Lashkar Gah (both are towns in Helmand Province of Afghanistan).

Zahiri’s and Malikzadai’s translation skills came in handy during high-level military decision-making and dialogue.

Interpreters who facilitated those talks often put a target on themselves by working with U.S. officials, making them vulnerable to the Taliban.

“We know of several interpreters who have been killed . . . or their families have been killed,” Zahiri said. “It’s certainly a risk we were having to take.”

Malikzadai says he started interpreting at age 17 after taking an English course, and that he needed the job to support his family because his father was the only one working.

“I found this opportunity to interpret for military officials. I have loved military since I was a child, and I thought this was my chance to be working as closely with the military as I could at the time,” Malikzadai said.

Zahiri worked to deliver supplies as a teenager, and interpreting was the next step to higher income.

One of the more stressful conversations that needed translation was when Federico needed to explain to Afghanistan’s military leadership that U.S. forces would be waning in the area. That would mean a decline in medical resources for Afghan troops.

“Our jobs are not just translating,” Malikzadai said. “We also must consider body language, tone, cultural indicators and implications. The way a Marine conveys a

message could come off in a way they do not intend (in the language of Farsi). It’s our job to bridge that communication.”

After interpreters finish their work for military officials and that military presence in Afghanistan wanes, interpreters are left even more vulnerable, Federico said.

Zahiri had initiated the process to obtain a visa and emigrate to the U.S. after Federico’s deployment in Afghanistan had ended in April 2013. Jamey Federico’s wife, Alexis Federico, had been doing pro bono work as a law student for the International Refugee Assistance Project. Under the oversight of a licensed attorney, Alexis Federico was able to take Zahiri’s case and facilitate his immigration.

“Both these young men have dealt with extraordinary hardships,” said Alexis Federico. “They’ve seen so much and dealt with such stressful situations for only being in their 20s, yet they’ve retained a resilient sense of optimism and drive to set out the goals they have for their lives. Our country needs driven, passionate individuals like Zahiri and Malikzadai.”

When Zahiri gained approval to come to the U.S., he stayed with the Federicos in Dana Point for several months while he got on his feet. He worked as a security guard and then was hired to do sales for Verizon, an opportunity, he says, that helped him learn a lot about the culture and current events in Southern California.

Malikzadai applied through the same visa program and soon followed and moved in with the family of another officer he had worked with in Afghanistan. After a

few months of getting settled, Malikzadai and Zahiri moved together to Anaheim.

“It was a culture shock,” Malikzadai said. “Of course, we knew English and had learned to build rapport with Marines stationed in Afghanistan. But moving to the U.S. and learning how the culture was different turned out to be a challenge at first.”

Malikzadai had dreams of serving in the military since being a young boy. He made it a goal to enlist in the U.S. Marines and, despite failing an English and math test to enlist, he enrolled in classes to improve his test-taking skills.

“I knew the math, but learning how to understand how math problems were introduced on tests (in the U.S.) was the hard part,” Malikzadai said. “After retaking the tests a second time, I passed.”

Malikzadai is now a Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton and, through a special military program, he gained citizenship the day before boot camp graduation.

While Zahiri promised his mother he would never enlist in the military, he has his eyes set on becoming a sheriff’s deputy. Although he isn’t a citizen yet, he will be eligible to apply in October. In the meantime, he is currently studying to be a nurse at Fullerton College. For a political science class, Zahiri was offered extra credit if he attended a city council meeting.

“It only made sense to attend a council meeting in Dana Point, where I could see Jamey in action,” Zahiri said.

and Malikzadai at their very first open American government meeting in the Dana Point City Council Chambers.

“I think it’s special that we can recognize them. On behalf of all the veterans that you’ve helped and on behalf of all the residents of Dana Point that are afforded our freedom, we want to thank you,” Federico said behind the dais, before Zahiri and Malikzadai received a standing ovation in the room.

While Zahiri was tasked with observing the meeting and answering civicsrelated questions on the content of the agenda, he says he was able to appreciate the council meeting from the perspective of having grown up in Afghanistan.

“Afghanistan is struggling. There is a lack of rule of law; there is little structure and accountability in government,” Zahiri said. “Seeing how (council meetings) and government is conducted here is very eye-opening. It shows us that we’re able to work out disagreements and challenges through discussion. That is so powerful.”

The instability and conflict in Afghanistan reinforces the negative stereotypes of people from that country, Federico said.

“I want people to see that there isn’t just one representation of who an Afghan is,” Federico said. “They’re certainly not all terrorists. So many Marines and other military personnel owe their lives to the Afghan interpreters who helped us in combat zones. I know I owe my life to Zahiri and Malikzadai.” DP

County Projects Embody the Spirit of Innovation

Launched in 2018, the Pop-Up Libraries program helps to raise public awareness of services available at OC Public Libraries through the targeted marketing of its services at events throughout Orange County.

Pop-Up Libraries consist of an outreach team of librarians participating in community and cultural events in which the library may not have had a presence otherwise. At these events, library staff connect with the public by issuing library cards, demonstrating online library databases and promoting branch programming. Pop-Up Libraries promote library services to both library and non-library users, enrich the public’s understanding of the diversity of activities branches offer, increase awareness of the library’s social media presence where patrons can learn of upcoming events, and brand the OC Public Libraries system as an integral part of the community.

In the checkout area, a woman with whipped cream on her body was sitting under a sign “PIE IN THE FACE! 1-PIE $10. 3-PIES $20. HELPING CHILDREN @ CHOC . . . PRICELESS.” A kid was using a mic to ask people to participate in "pie in the face."

I’ve done many types of fundraisers for nonprofits. But I was surprised to see this method. I told Costco there were homeless outside; this was wrong. The immediate response was that it was about catching people’s attention to donate for a good cause. Yes, a good cause. There were many ways to do it. It didn’t have to be wasteful. They listened, but couldn’t interrupt the program planned by upper management. I believe they won’t do such “public education” again. Later, I told some friends about it. No one thought there was anything wrong. It made me wonder how many people left Costco with the idea of

The County of Orange is pursuing the development of organic processing facilities at each of the county’s three active landfills in response to new legislation that intends to increase organic waste recycling and decrease greenhouse gas emissions from landfills. As a leader in providing waste management services, OC Waste & Recycling (OCWR) has the resources to develop organic processing facilities that will contribute to a regional solution to process organic waste and establish end markets within the County. In 2016, OCWR established a strategic initiative to create and implement an organic material management program. The program is designed to address the lack of infrastructure required for processing organic waste, to meet statewide organic diversion mandates. In 2017, OCWR launched active compost pilot projects at each of the three County-owned landfills.

These pilot projects helped the County gain in-house expertise and experience in composting operations. Since the implementation of the regional organics program, OCWR has demonstrated successful, lab-certified compost results at all three landfill sites, and is now collaborating with key regulators on the development and construction of commercial compost facilities. The estimated output of certified compost materials is approximately 600 tons per day.

Each of these projects helps connect county residents with a better, more transparent and responsive county government.

ilmmaker Joanna Hogg claims that she never allowed her lead actress to see the full script for her recent film, The Souvenir. If this is true, then it says a lot about her talent as a director and about Honor Swinton Byrne’s potential as a gifted actress. I mean this in the best way, because watching the film, you’d never guess most of her character was created on the spot. Byrne is that good, and apparently smart enough not to bother pretending that her mother and co-star isn’t Oscar-winning actress Tilda Swinton.

In 1980 London, 19-year-old film student Julie (Byrne) is trying to produce her first movie project, though with some uncertainty. She’s struggling to express the message on screen, as well as feeling uncomfortable away from home and having to impress older people on her own.

When Julie casually begins a relationship with older Anthony (Tom Burke), an intellectual film lover, she thinks he might be a good influence on her life and art—until she discovers he has a drug habit.

The elder Swinton lady appears as Julie’s overprotective mother. It’s fortunate that Tilda doesn’t have a lot of screen time in The Souvenir; otherwise, it might have been a shame for her to possibly overshadow her daughter’s impressive debut. Byrne is just as much a delight on camera and can successfully carry the heaviness of the plot almost all on her own. If there’s one thing to nitpick, it’s that it is a little weird that we don’t see Julie, a film student, watching movies or talking about her favorites at any point in the film. DP

‘I GOT THIS!’ 5-year-old prodigy says

I

t can be a real kick meeting a 5-year-old prodigy.

Hudson Roberts of San Clemente isn’t a concert pianist in the making. Nor is he an aspiring tennis champion.

His passion is landscaping. You have to see him in action to appreciate it.

“The kid is incredible,” said Ricardo Luna, whose family landscaping business dates back to his grandfather in early San Clemente, 1920s.

Luna uses “prodigy” to describe Hudson Roberts. “If I had a little army of Hudsons, I’d be very happy,” Luna said.

The 48-pound dynamo and his parents, Stephanie and Ben, reside in a two-bedroom apartment attached to the San Clemente home of Steve Zdrakas, Stephanie’s father.

From age 2, Hudson would watch the gardeners work weekly. “When the gardeners are working in the front yard, he’s upstairs on his balcony watching them,” Zdrakas said. “They go to the backyard, he runs around the balcony through my bedroom and watches them work in the backyard.”

Over time, Hudson studied their craft. He sought out landscaping videos on YouTube.

He inspects landscapers’ work. He’ll remark on yards and greenbelts he notices around town.

With his family’s blessing, he began getting some tools. His grandfather, Steve, or “Papi” as Hudson calls him, takes him

regularly to Lowe’s, where the staff now knows him. Hudson’s family supports his passion, providing him with select gear.

More than a year ago, he got his first “account,” a family friend’s yard to work on for a few dollars. “He doesn’t really want money,” Papi said. He does want tools.

He now has three “accounts,” and he’ll work endlessly until Papi insists it’s time to go. He holds himself to the highest standards, Papi said, mowing lawns, trimming edges, applying a weed whacker, raking leaves, using a cordless leaf blower, hauling off barrels of material.

Nancy Erickson, one of Hudson’s “accounts,” said he makes the most of the opportunity. And, yes, it’s only he and she who take care of her spacious yard.

Is there anything he can’t do? “I haven’t seen him cut down a palm tree,” Erickson said.

“I think if he had the opportunity, he’d love it.”

Indeed, Hudson made quick work of a palm branch he found brushing his window at home.

“He cut it, then he cut COASTLINES it into small pieces,”

Hudson wears protective gear, handles equipment like a pro and is careful with it, Papi said.

When pre-kindergarten began, Hudson’s family had to reschedule the landscapers so Hudson could be home to monitor them, his mom said. “He wouldn’t go to school,” Papi said.

Hudson meets up with Rod’s Tree Service from time to time to discreetly intern, in uniform, with the crew. When Hudson found out that El Pollo Loco is a favorite lunch spot for landscapers, guess where he began asking to dine.

“I’ve never seen anything like him,” Ricardo Luna said.

Actually, Luna and one brother, Juan, began assisting their father when Ricardo was 7, but not quite with Hudson’s fervor. “My

undreds gathered at Pines Park in Capistrano Beach on Memorial Day to honor the military lives lost in battle. VFW Post 9934 and the City of Dana Point presented the event overlooking the Dana Point coast on Monday, May 27 to pay special recognition to the sacrifices veterans have made.

The program included a “Boots and Rifle” ceremony conducted by officers of Post 9934, and the bugle call, “Taps.” This year, Post 9934 honored all of the women who have served the country, or supported active duty personnel and veterans. Attendees included Dana Point Mayor Joe Muller and City Councilmembers Debra Lewis and Jamey Federico, as well as members of the Marine Corps Air Station from Camp Pendleton and their color guard. The Taps bugle call was played by Master of the Trumpet David Longoria.

At the end of the service, attendees had the opportunity to place a flower at the Fallen Soldier Battle Cross, which is a symbolic makeshift cross comprised of a rifle, helmet and boots. The battlefield cross is meant to honor the life of a soldier killed in the line of duty.

Water cool down sends anglers deeper

W

eather cooled down the water temperature and sent anglers into deeper water on recent Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching expeditions.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said that water temperature dropped to 55-56 degrees this week, which is a nine-degree drop from last week. The weather and the wind dropped things down, but even a little sunshine could bring the things back up and reheat the surface bass action.

Half-day trips saw mostly sand bass, whitefish and sheephead in the haul.

Three-quarter-day trips went deeper to pull up the bottom fish. Woolley said the consistency and quality on those trips has been good, even if boats are having to drift

to get some bites. Rockfish and sculpin have come up on those counts.

On the overnight trips, the Fury returned to San Clemente Island. The island has seen some solid rockfish catches, and the overnights took advantage with a quality haul. Yellowtail slowed down a little, but they were still found in the counts. Starting in June, the Fury will be begin 1 ½-day trips for those interested in longer excursions.

Rind just missed out on State qualification in the girls 200 meters at Masters. Rind ran a time of 24.73 seconds to finish in eighth, one spot and 0.18 seconds out of State.

As the high school sports season comes to an end, it was again the Dana Hills girls 4x400-meter relay team that stood as the crown jewel for the Dolphins track and field team.

The Dana Hills foursome of senior Hailey Ray, juniors Anisa Rind and Mia Lawrence and sophomore Camryn Toole qualified the Dolphins 4x400-meter relay team to the CIF State Championship Finals for a third consecutive season and earned bronze with a third-place finish at 3:48.29 on Saturday, May 25 at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

Toole ran the opening leg, then Ray followed, Rind took the third leg and Lawrence ran the anchor leg. Long Beach Poly took first place with a time of 3:46.23, and Roosevelt of Eastvale finished in second at 3:47.94.

naries at 3:48.53. The Dolphins qualified for State with a season-best time of 3:47.11 for a sixth-place finish at CIF-SS Masters.

The 4x400-meter relay team finished eighth at State last season and earned silver in 2017. Ray was the only member to run on all three teams that qualified for the State final. Rind and Lawrence ran on each of the past two.

Dana Hills has had only one individual State champion in its history. Bryan Harrison

won the boys 200-meter State title in 1995.

The relay team was one of three Dana Hills entries to qualify for the State meet.

Ray ran individually in the 300-meter hurdles. The UC Santa Barbara-bound senior qualified for State with a personal-record time of 43.33 seconds at Masters for a third-place finish. In the State prelims, Ray finished 15th at 45.07 seconds.

Carrick Denker was the lone Dolphin boys entry to qualify for State. The junior

Michael Abbinante

August 17, 1930 - May 23, 2019 Michael Abbinante, 88, peacefully passed away on May 23, 2019.

A resident of Dana Point for 27 years, Michael’s passion was photography with his favorite subject being the Dana Point Harbor. His photos were commissioned by the Chamber of Commerce, the city and Harbor of Dana Point.

Michael loved every minute he spent producing each photograph, every one a labor of love.

Michael’s business achievements included being a founder/owner of Richter Manufacturing; a company that produced packaging material in Pomona, California. An engineer by trade, Michael worked at a variety of engineering jobs in the Chicago area before moving to California.

Michael never met a musical instrument he couldn’t play, though guitar and piano were his favorites. Music was in his soul. He loved life and had a great sense of humor.

Michael is survived by his wife Marilyn, and three children; Dona Abbinante, Karen Abbinante, and Phillip Abbinante, as well as two stepchildren; Bret Holley and Todd Holley. Known as Grampy Doodledo to his four grandchildren; Nate Holley, Evin Holley, Sean Holley, and Lauren Holley.

A treasure to all he met, Michael will always be loved and deeply missed.

A new bronze sculpture in Dana Point celebrates one of surfing’s most influential stylists

ith a view stretching from Dana Point to Cotton’s Point in San Clemente, Phil Edwards sits on his back porch watching the sailboards ride the breeze. Silver hair smartly parted, he’s every bit the humble, dignified waterman he’s always been as he stares down 81 years old. Eyes trained on the ocean, he’s in a reflective mood.

“I never charged Pipeline, I just survived it,” Edwards said when the Dana Point Times asked him about his experience at the famed Hawaiian surf spot.

In 1961, Edwards became the first person to successfully ride Pipeline when he finally decided to break the seal and paddle out. Filmmaker and friend Bruce Brown was on hand to document the moment.

“Once I made up my mind to do it, I didn’t wait around too much,” Phil said, laughing. “I’d been watching it enough that I knew what wave I wanted, what swell direction and all that. It’s a little touchy on which way they come at it, but I was pretty good at figuring out which one I wanted. Anyway, Bruce later tells me that he didn’t know I was going to take off that fast. He was still walking down the beach with his camera. That’s why if you look at the footage, it’s a little shaky, because he did this hand-held thing and didn’t have time to set up the tripod.

“It was a good wave, but it was so quick.

And it was shallow. And I was kind of spooked by it. I’m not a daredevil guy, so I never really charged it.”

By the time he put his board on his car after that seminal ride, there were already three other surfers in the water “launching” themselves. And the next winter, it was properly on at the Banzai Reef. Edwards would never admit it, but it wasn’t the first or last time he helped redirect the trajectory of surfing.

On June 7, Edwards’ contributions to the sport, culture and lifestyle of surfing will be celebrated with the unveiling of a new bronze sculpture in Dana Point. The Edwards sculpture will sit alongside the

“I really love how it turned out; it’s really an honor,” Phil said. “Every detail is so accurate and realistic. I can’t believe I’m getting a bronze sculpture for going surfing every day.”

Edwards’ candor belies his influence. His resume reads like a greatest hits album of surf history. Growing up in Oceanside, he was 13 years old when he and a 16-year-old friend, Miki Dora, migrated from the usual scene at San Onofre to “The Trestle.”

“Miki and I spent one summer together at San Onofre, and we’d look up at the point and ask these old guys what it was like up there: ‘Oh, well, we went back up there in ’38, and Peanuts Larson got this big wave . . . blah, blah, blah,’ ” Edwards said as he reminisced. “Anyway, Miki was 16, and I was 13.

He had a car, so we drove the car up there and walked through the railroad tracks and around the swamp, and that’s how we started surfing The Trestle. And we didn’t tell anybody for a while. So we had it all to ourselves for a while; it was kind of neat.”

A couple of years later in 1953, Edwards, then 15, famously charged big Killer Dana and introduced the fledgling surf scene to the “cutback.” By the end of the 1950s, he was one of the sport’s first bona fide stars. In 1963, he won Surfer Magazine’s inaugural Surfer Poll Awards, and Hobie released the Phil Edwards Model, the first signature surfboard model.

“That was his idea. It was kind of a first,” said Edwards of Alter’s move to re-

lease a pro model surfboard. “Everybody else jumped on it after that. I don’t like to take too much credit for anything that Hobie did. He was a really sharp guy. He didn’t need me for anything.”

In 1966, he was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, making him one of the most recognizable surfers in the world at the time.

By the end of the ’60s, the Shortboard Revolution had taken over the sport, and Edwards’ interests shifted to sailing, building boats and working with Alter on the Hobie Cat. In 1988, as longboard surfing came back into vogue, Hobie Surfboards relaunched the Phil Edwards model, a design still going strong today.

Edwards has also recently been collaborating with surfwear company Reyn Spooner to release a new line of aloha shirts. The two had worked together in years past, and the vintage shirts are highly sought after by collectors. This new line is an opportunity to keep the Edwards magic moving forward for a new generation.

“Reyn Spooner is absolutely honored to work with Phil and Mary,” said Shane Wallace, Director of Sales for Reyn Spooner. “The Edwardses are just unique and lovely people who exemplify the Aloha Spirit. Phil is the original symbol to both surfing, skateboarding, and (is) a beach lifestyle fashion icon. It’s been an absolute pleasure and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to launch this collection.”

For all his fame and influence, Edwards has been characteristically reluctant to stand in the spotlight. But after all of these years and all he’s done for surfing, it’s time to celebrate a true surfing legend. DP

an Clemente has long been the home of progressive, above-the-lip surfing, ever since guys such as Christian Fletcher and Shane Beschen started punting at T Street in the ’80s and ’90s. The tradition continues with rising star Luke Wyler, the newly crowned Air Show winner at the recent NSSA West Coast Regional Championships.

Out-soaring the competition in a tight final, the 13-year-old regular-footer took the win over other San Clemente and Dana Point locals, including Hayden Rodgers, Cannon Carr and Bella Kenworthy.

A nimble, stylish surfer, Wyler buckled down and put in the hard yards to dial in his air game before the NSSA contest in Huntington Beach. A few weeks before it was time to compete, he headed to Waco, Texas, for a training session at the BSR Surf Resort—home of a man-made wave that provides surfers with an ideal setting for perfecting their maneuvers and repertoire. It paid off with a big win in Huntington.

Wyler’s been coming into his own in 2019. To start the year, he won the Under 14 division at the Toyota USA Surfing Prime Series presented by “Got Milk?” in Santa Cruz. With the water finally starting to warm up a little and a series of south swells stacked up in the forecast, “Lowers Luke” is setting himself up for a memorable summer vacation. DP
