Five things Dana Point should know this week Caltrans Prepares to Launch Environmental Studies for Toll Road Extension Proposals THE LATEST: The City of San Clemente hosted a town hall forum on Wednesday, Nov. 13, to discuss traffic relief in South Orange County. The panel of participants included representatives from California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA), as well as local elected state officials Sen. Patricia Bates and Assemblymember Bill Brough.

The initial stages of the environmental process to study the proposed 241 Toll Road extensions through San Clemente and parts of San Juan Capistrano are officially underway, as Caltrans last week began to accept public comment and review of the South County Traffic Relief Effort.

“The purpose of this town hall is to provide information. The Toll Road is a community issue that is paramount,” said San Clemente Mayor Pro Tem Dan Bane, who moderated the panel. “As a council, we’ve been working on a lot of issues. . . . We want to let you know where we’re at in the process.”

On Friday, Nov. 8, Caltrans, in coordination with the Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency (F/ETCA)—part of the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA)— submitted the Notice of Preparation/Notice of Intent and announced a pair of public scoping meetings for Nov. 20 and Dec. 4.

The Relief Effort, which includes a series of proposed routes—one is extending the 241 through San Clemente and connecting to the I-5 Freeway; another is extending Crown Valley Parkway to the 241—are intended to “improve northsouth regional mobility in South Orange County and accommodate regional travel demand,” according to Caltrans.

Initially there was a total of 24 overall ideas for the project, but those have been narrowed-down to 11 alternative proposals—including a no-build option—all of which will eventually go through environmental and engineering studies.

The proposed options that could potentially impact San Clemente and San Juan include alternatives 13, 14, 17, 21, 22 and 23.

sion come down through San Juan and cut west to connect to the I-5.

Alternative 17 would similarly have the 241 travel down through San Juan and continue south into San Clemente, connecting to the I-5 through Shorecliffs.

Alternative 14 is proposed to extend down near the western border of Rancho Mission Viejo, cross over La Pata and join the freeway by Avenida Pico.

Alternative 21 comprises two separate roadway segments, with the first one extending Los Patrones Parkway from Cow Camp Road to Avenida La Pata. “The second segment would provide a median-to-median, high-occupancy toll (HOT) lane connector from SR 73 to I-5,” according to Relief Effort.

Alternative 22, a road alignment plan that Orange County Board Supervisor and Chairperson Lisa Bartlett has proposed, would connect the new Los Patrones Parkway from Cow Camp Road to Avenida La Pata, running along the east side of the Prima Deschecha Landfill.

Alternative 23, which has a few potential components to it, would extend the managed lanes—High Occupancy Toll lanes and High Occupancy Vehicle lanes—on the I-5, from Pico to the Basilone Road interchange.

“Is there any possibility some of these ideas are just too stupid to consider studying?” Bane asked.

Mike Chesney, TCA Strategic Officer, said that because the agencies were in the formal CEQA process, options could not be removed and that each alternative would still need to be studied.

In closing remarks, Sen. Bates said it didn’t make sense that alternatives were

added to the study process but that alternatives could not be removed.

A concern that OCTA has expressed are potential conflicts the alternative routes have with Measure M-funded projects.

In February 2018, OCTA initiated a project to build six new miles of carpool lanes between San Juan Creek Road and Avenida Pico on I-5. Alternatives 11 and 12 would convert Measure M-funded carpool lanes—Avenida Pico to San Juan Creek Road—to HOT lanes.

TCA states the agency is keenly aware of the recently completed and ongoing Measure M projects along I-5 in South Orange County and respects OCTA’s Measure M commitments.

“Given the planning year horizon of 2050 and the regional nature of the project, we believe it is important to consider alternatives on the I-5, as well as alternatives which provide an extension of the SR-241,” the TCA has said in a previous statement.

The public scoping period was initially set for Nov. 8 through Dec. 9. Bane urged Caltrans and the TCA to extend the 30-day scoping period to 90 days, considering the holiday season could deter input. Based on input received, TCA and Caltrans have agreed to extend the comment period for a total comment period of 60 days, according to a Sarah King, a spokesperson for TCA. “The scoping period kicks off the formal environmental review phase of the SCTRE, which will consider traffic data, community issues and environmental impacts of every alternative that advances to the technical studies portion of the PA/ED phase of the process,” according to a statement that followed the town hall event.

Dana Point Symphony Returns for Third Annual Holiday Concert THE LATEST: The Dana Point Symphony has announced its ninth season and its Third Annual Holiday Concert for Friday, Dec. 13 at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church.

The Dana Point Symphony grew out of former Mayor and City Councilmember Scott Schoeffel’s vision of integrating and elevating music, art and culture in Dana Point.

“I grew up in Pasadena, and I saw what arts and culture did for the city. I wanted to bring that vision to Dana Point,” Schoeffel said. “What the symphony offers truly sets it apart from others. It brings a legitimate performance that sets the standard.

Afterward, they’re able to interact with musicians and get to know them.”

Schoeffel’s passion for music and the arts derives from his own background in music. He has been a musician since age 4, with a proficiency in playing the violin.

“Music has the ability to bring a community together. We need it,” Schoeffel said. “People can sit in front of the majesty of the orchestra, and it changes them. It is one thing to hear music over speakers, but to be there in person is a completely different experience. That sets the Dana Point Symphony apart.”

Schoeffel has collaborated with the symphony’s conductor, Dean Anderson, since its inception. Like Schoeffel, Anderson fell in love with music at an early age, hearing classical pieces over the radio.

“We create something that this community should be proud of,” Anderson said.

“Why should residents have to travel to northern Orange County or Los Angeles to see phenomenal musical performances when we can provide that right here in Dana Point?”

The concert program will include the Hallelujah Chorus, Lord Nelson Mass and other holiday favorites.

The symphony has also announced future events such as Beethoven Celebration on Feb. 7, 2020, An Evening of Opera Favorites on April 24, 2020 and the 2nd Annual Fundraiser for May 17, 2020.

Wyatt Brings Recommended Actions on Addressing Short-Term Rental Regulation THE LATEST: Mayor Pro Tem Paul Wyatt has brought forth recommendations to put a short-term rental ordinance into effect, according to the agenda report for the Nov. 19 Dana Point City Council meeting.

Council has already set direction for city staff to conduct a resident survey on short-term rentals, which will be made public and will be reviewed at a future council meeting.

Recommended action includes the council passing a short-term rental ordinance, which will not become effective until approved by the California Coastal Commission and voted on and approved by a simple majority of Dana Point voters.

“Elections are only held every (two) years, so if this issue is to make the November 2020 ballot, the Short-term Rental Subcommittee and staff must establish a sequence and timeline of all the key events that must take place to enact an ordinance in a timely fashion,” Wyatt states in the Dana Point Times November 15-21, 2019

In 2013, city council passed an ordinance to permit short-term rentals in Dana Point effective January 2014. However, the passage was contingent on acceptance by the CCC. If the CCC did not approve the ordinance, short-term rental uses in the coastal zone would remain illegal. Anyone operating a short-term rental prior to all zoning changes becoming effective is essentially “doing so at their own risk.”

In Spring 2016, the CCC rejected the ordinance as submitted and made approval contingent upon outlined changes. Those changes were approved by city council in September 2016, but voters rejected the ordinance from taking effect.

A Short-Term Rental Subcommittee was formed on March 20, 2018, and councilmembers Paul Wyatt and John Tomlinson were appointed to serve. The subcommittee determined in its first meeting that it would not submit a proposed ordinance to city council until the CCC had accepted it and there was a high probability the residents of Dana Point would accept it in a vote.

period through 2026, aims to deliver transportation improvements promised to voters through Measure M as early as possible.

The plan was updated in response to a new revenue forecast for Measure M, Orange County’s half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements, also known as OC Go. Measure M is expected to generate $13.4 billion through 2041, an increase of $300 million compared to last year’s sales -tax revenue forecast, the first forecasted increase since 2014.

The Next 10 Plan calls for delivering up to $4.3 billion in freeway projects, including completing 26 of 30 freeway project segments promised in Measure M. It would allocate nearly $1 billion for street improvements, including synchronizing traffic signals and providing flexible funding to cities to improve their roads. The plan also calls for investing approximately $1 billion to enhance access to transit services, including delivery of the OC Streetcar and expanding Metrolink service, and ensuring the ongoing preservation of open space preserves and providing $40 million in water quality grants aimed at preventing the flow of trash and debris into waterways.

City Issues Latest on Capistrano Seaside Inn Litigation THE LATEST: The City of Dana Point released an update on its legal battle with Capistrano Seaside Inn—a neglected hotel property—on Thursday, Nov. 14.

A settlement agreement was reached by which the current owner agreed to allow

the court-appointed receiver to sell the property.

The property along Pacific Coast Highway in Capistrano Beach was constructed around 1930 with some office space and 28 motel rooms. It was regarded as one of the last remaining roadside motels in Dana Point, helping to shape California car culture.

A receiver was court-appointed for the property per the request of the City of Dana Point after significant nuisance complaints and code violations. City staff attempted to work with the property owner over the course of seven months to bring the property into compliance, but after failure to comply with the city’s requests, the city sought the court’s assistance, according to a city press release sent in March.

A receiver acts as a representative in bringing the property into compliance.

Dana Point Times last reported in May that a judge had dismissed the owner of Capistrano Seaside Inn’s bankruptcy claim as a bad-faith claim and that both the City of Dana Point and the motel owner were ordered to have a settlement conference.

“Since the appointment of the receiver, progress to remediate the nuisance conditions at the Seaside Inn has been slower than desired because of the property owner’s objections filed in the legal proceedings and the need to ensure proper legal procedures and formalities are followed,” according to a city statement. “The property owner has been very litigious, and has engaged in a number of tactics designed to delay the process. Since the Receiver was appointed, the property owner has attempted on at least five occasions to have the receivership terminated.”

Compounding the delays that have occurred, in May the parties reached a settlement by which the property would have been sold to a third party, who would have restored it pursuant to permits that are ready to be issued.

“Unfortunately, the property owner reneged on the settlement, and the Court has thus far declined to enforce it,” said Patrick Muñoz, the city’s attorney.

City staff says that at this time, plans for the repair of the hotel have been prepared, and building permits are ready to be issued. The plans would result in the restoration of the property in a manner that would preserve its historic characteristics. While awaiting implementation of these plans, the court-appointed receiver has been securing the property to guard against trespassers, and ensure the historical characteristics of the property are not further denigrated.

WHAT’S NEXT: The next court hearing will be held on Jan. 31, 2020, in department C16 of the Orange County Superior Court in Santa Ana. At that time, the court will have the opportunity to allow the receiver to complete its work, and abate the nuisance conditions at the property.—LB danapointtimes.com

‘Beyond the Pod’ Helps Students Plan for Future Dana Hills High School hosted its first College and Career event, “Beyond the Pod,” on Nov. 7-8, to help senior students navigate their next steps after graduation.

According to student-provided information, approximately 40% of students don’t go to a four-year university after high school. With this information, DHHS Assistant Principal Luci Coppola helped plan Beyond the Pod, so all students are supported and have resources for whichever path they choose post-graduation.

“We want students to feel supported,” Coppola said. “Whichever path they choose, we want to provide the resources in order for them to succeed.”

Students had the opportunity to submit a college application with the assistance of parent volunteers and partners from local community colleges and California State Universities. There were also military representatives who spoke with students about recruitment.

The event took place during school hours and provided separate areas for scholarship and financial aid workshops, as well as a room for each path, including UCs, CSUs, military and Marines, community colleges, trade schools and the workforce.

Madison Caldwell is a senior at DHHS who participated in the Beyond the Pod program. She says the application process could have been overwhelming had there not been staff to guide her through.

“It helped me apply to college, and I had lots of questions on what to do,” Caldwell said. “I asked questions I probably wouldn’t have been able to answer without the help of the advisors here.”

Families are invited to enjoy tiki-themed activities and live entertainment, restaurant offerings, visits with Santa, and the parade of local boats adorned with holiday lights. Each event date will kick off with entertainment along the harbor beginning at 4:30 p.m., followed by the Boat Parade of Lights at 7:30 p.m.

Jake Vandenburg, a San Clemente resident and senior at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, was honored at the Richard Nixon Library in Yorba Linda on Saturday, Nov. 9, as one of the Southern California recipients of this year’s Congressional Awards.

A Congressional Award is given to young Americans who have enrolled in the national program and achieved their goals in various program areas such as Voluntary Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness and Expedition/Exploration.

He received the Silver Medal at this year’s ceremony and will be receiving the Gold Medal in April 2020.

Vandenburg’s accomplishment in public service included volunteering with organizations including the Special Camp for Special Kids, the OC Junior Lifeguards and Soul Surf. His personal development and fitness included work with local surf coach Dave Post and surf photographer Jake McDaniel. His expedition included traveling to two countries, while immersing himself in the language, customs and culture.

Stemming the Tide Ocean Institute Turns to Crowdfunding to Preserve Aging ‘Pilgrim’

cean Institute is turning to the community in a first-time effort to crowdfund $100,000 upkeep and repairs for the Pilgrim.

The Pilgrim was originally built in 1945 in Halbech, Denmark as a three-masted schooner used for the lumber trade in the Baltic Sea. Now, she rests in the Dana Point Harbor, and is often used as a classroom for visiting students to learn about sea life throughout history. Her likeness serves as a reproduction of the ship made famous by Dana Point’s namesake, Richard Henry Dana Jr., in his classic narrative, Two Years Before The Mast.

The Pilgrim first came to the harbor in 1981, when the Orange County Marine Institute—now known as the Ocean Institute—began running its educational programs.

“She was originally moored in the middle of the harbor and boats would actually have to row out to board the vessel,” said Dan Goldbacher, director of maritime programs at Ocean Institute.

Now the Pilgrim is visited by nearly 100,000 students and public visitors annually. Since 1981, the Ocean Institute has welcomed more than 300,000 students to step aboard the Pilgrim—some getting the opportunity to stay overnight to experience what life may have been like aboard a ship in the 1830s.

“For a 75-year old ship, she’s in pretty good condition,” Goldbacher said. “But as to be expected for aging ships, they need routine maintenance every several years.”

The Pilgrim’s last checkup was done in 2016, and it was determined that no significant repairs were needed. The task requires hauling the vessel out to a dry dock in San Pedro, which can cost anywhere between $45,000 and $70,000. For a thorough review, naval engineers, architects and marine surveyors are brought out to assess the state of the ship.

“The best way to understand the repairs and maintenance needed for a vessel like the Pilgrim is for it to be out of the water,” Goldbacher said. “Surveyors aren’t able to get a full read when she’s docked . . . so the majority of the costs will be going toward dry docking.”

In previous years, the funding came from development campaigns and fees people pay for certain programs. This will be the Ocean Institute’s first time using GoFundMe to garner financial support to maintain one of its vessels.

The GoFundMe campaign went live on Oct. 25 and has since raised about $5,000.

“Tall ships are a symbol for Dana Point, and the Pilgrim is a staple to our rich history and culture,” Goldbacher said. “Our hope is that the community can step forward and preserve this ship that means so much to the community.”

Since Ocean Institute moved forward with the GoFundMe page, Goldbacher says he’s heard from a variety of people that the Pilgrim has impacted.

“I’ve heard from students who have spent the night on the Pilgrim and their experience helped point toward wanting to work in a field geared toward the ocean or maritime,” Goldbacher said. “I’ve heard from teachers who took their class on field trips to the Pilgrim and from some of the original crewmembers who worked on the ship in the ’80s.”

Goldbacher says that GoFundMe has enabled the Ocean Institute to reach people that the nonprofit organization otherwise would not have.

“Through the use of social media, we’re hearing from donors who the Pilgrim really impacted,” Goldbacher said. “We’re reaching people that we wouldn’t normally connect with from traditional fundraising efforts.” DP Dana Point Times November 15-21, 2019

During its Oct. 1 meeting, the Dana Point City Council spent considerable time debating the merits of a sign-in “survey” they previously conducted on the issue of short-term vacation rentals (STRs). Clearly, the sign-in survey was flawed, as a sign-in survey does not represent a community’s demographics and anyone, including non-residents, could respond, opening further the survey to respondents with special interests in promoting short-term vacation rentals.

At the Oct. 1 meeting, three councilmembers voted to create a new statistically valid survey, with Councilmember Richard Viczorek and Mayor Joe Muller voting no. The commentary that ensued showed a clear interest on the part of the council majority of Viczorek, Muller and Councilmember Jamey Federico to bring more short-term vacation rentals to our residential neighborhoods.

Setting a new valid survey aside, I question why a survey is needed at all. In 2016, 4,000 registered Dana Point voters (40% of the DP voters who voted in 2018) signed a referendum overturning the council’s attempt to foist STRs on the populace. The council, faced with a referendum, had two options: place a proposed STR ordinance on the ballot to a vote of the people, which they chose not to do, or do what they did instead: rescind the existing ordinance. Now, however, the council majority is moving in the direction of establishing another shortterm vacation rental ordinance (STR).

Clearly, the Dana Point City Council knows where the voters stand. Have they become so tone-deaf that they now believe we have changed our minds? We have not.

I was taken aback by your publishing Mayor Brian Maryott”s accusation that Congressman Mike Levin was the recipient of “dark money.” It is clearly evident that political parties make use of current legal shell games to inject anonymous money into politics. For Mr. Maryott to blatantly deflect Congressman Levin’s efforts to clean up political funding under the assertion that he has been bought by “political elites and outof-state extremists” is specious. Both parties raise money for their candidates.

H.R. 1, entitled “For the People Act,” was the first legislation to come out of

this year’s House of Representatives to reform outrageous voting machinations and, in particular, to limit the influence of money in politics. We are all well aware of the infusion of massive amounts of money from the fossil fuel industry, big pharma, financial monoliths and various other conglomerates. Corporate money vastly outweighs the influence of individual persons—the people. The bill curtails this excess, creates transparency, and returns an ethical honesty to the political process.

Congressman Levin is a signatory to this bill and an active supporter of it. Unfortunately, this bill sits on the Senate majority leader’s desk, unacted upon. In the face of all this, Mr. Maryott’s comments and accusations are facetious and disingenuous.

GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE DARCIE HARRIS, San Juan Capistrano

I am deeply disappointed in San Juan Capistrano Mayor Brian Maryott for his inflammatory comments about Congressman Mike Levin and equally disappointed in Picket Fence Media for printing content one would expect to see in a paid political ad. It’s sadly hypocritical for Maryott to voice concern about “dark money” when Republicans have already garnered millions in Super PAC dollars, earmarked for the 2020 House congressional races. And it’s not good journalism to print shallow quotes from Maryott, peppered with the standard demagogic words like “elites” and “extremists,” without digging deeper into the larger issue. For example, according to opensecrets.org, “A powerful Republican super PAC received nearly half of its contributions during the first half of 2019 from a dark money group that shares its Washington, D.C. office.”

It was the Citizens United’s decision that opened the floodgates of unlimited contributions from undisclosed donors— both parties raise money this way. But Congressman Levin actively worked to pass the For the People Act, which would help curtail the political influence of big money. That bill was passed in the House in March and has died like so many others in the Republican-controlled Senate. If Mr. Maryott wants to get “dark money” out of politics, perhaps he’ll make his voice heard to Mitch McConnell.

Let’s give credit where credit is due: Congressman Levin has stood strong on cleaning up nuclear waste from San Clemente, is unfailing in his support of our veterans and has worked hard to protect our beautiful coastline. I am grateful, as are many others.

NOT NEIGHBORS’ JOBS TO HELP STR OWNERS’ PROFIT ROGER MALCOLM, Capistrano Beach

When I moved to Capistrano Beach 31 years ago, it never occurred to me I’d

one day be enduring a short-term rental business next door. My house is not in a homeowners association (HOA), but like everyone else, I relied on the city to honor residential zoning and make sure neighbors—and not commercial businesses—occupied adjacent properties. Now the city is considering breaking that promise and allowing short-term rentals (STRs) throughout the city. Mayor Joe Muller has stated that HOAs, like the one he lives in, would remain “protected,” but perhaps he’s not aware of the illegal STR issues endured by HOAs like Niguel Beach Terrace and others. It appears that no one is really safe if the council enacts a broad STR ordinance.

After numerous complaints and fines, my neighbor is now sticking to 30-day vacation rentals, which are legal everywhere, and definitely less of a nuisance.

While the illegal STRs were ongoing, we endured constant noise, parties (often starting after midnight), cigar and cigarette smoke wafting into our bedrooms and living areas and incessant light pollution from patios illuminated all night long. And then there was the drug paraphernalia—needles and syringes left at the curb for our kids to find, and coarse language and raucous behavior from the kinds of tourists that can’t afford the place but pool funds with others to invade our neighborhoods. Add to that the invasion of privacy from transient people staring into our windows, overflowing trash cans left at the curb on any day of the week, and the constant fear that these unknown people could be casing our place. Is it any wonder we reported these nuisances repeatedly until, despite the fact that fines weren’t even close to the money being made, our neighbor shut down this illegal business?

Mr. Ray waxed on his letter to the Dana Point Times last week about the lovely, quiet tenants at his legal short-term rental businesses. No doubt he’s a responsible owner, but I wonder how happy his neighbors are. Does anyone really want to risk their privacy, quiet enjoyment of their home, and the property value of their often largest asset so that their neighbor can earn money in this invasive way? I don’t ask you to suffer my efforts to make a living. Please return the favor.

At the Movies: ‘Doctor Sleep’ Has Some Shine

ilmmaker Mike Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep has to be one of the biggest examples of stories referred to as “the most unnecessary sequel of all time.” And as the direct sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic The Shining (1980), the accusations could very much still be found. It’s 2011, and Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) is all grown up. Over the years, Dan has discovered that he can still “shine” and sense other people around him with extraordinary powers and speak to them telepathically. Throughout the film, Dan finds there is an evil cult led by Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson) and Crow Daddy (Zahn McClarnon) that preys on kids who have the same special powers as he does. But one adolescent girl named Abra (Kyliegh Curran) is the most powerful and cleverest of all.

Flanagan has gained a reputation for

making decent-to-good films and TV series out of concepts that read on paper like they should be duds, so it’s no surprise Doctor Sleep isn’t half bad. He wisely makes this update to the famous story his own vision; it almost feels as if the Shining elements weren’t needed. The weaknesses are that it is a little glaring to go back-and-forth between Flanagan’s direction and Kubrick’s.

Ferguson is generally great as the villainess, though, unfortunately, she’s stuck with a slightly obnoxious reoccurring catchphrase.

Other than that, the new horror mystery is a big step above the goofy TV mini-series of The Shining (1997). DP

Why I’m Not a Matchmaker

I’

m a newspaper columnist. My topic: people age 50-plus seeking love. For 26 years, I’ve written about hundreds of seniors who’ve found love, and thousands who haven’t.

Knowing I have contact with so many older singles, people ask why I don’t fix people up. There’s an easy reason: it’s too darn hard and seldom works.

It’s not that I haven’t tried. I’ve known widowers from San Clemente and widows from San Clemente and have suggested they get together. Some have, but in almost all cases, no match was made. And then, the people get mad at me for wasting their time. It’s a no-win situation.

Granted, some couples have formed as a result of our Meet and Greet get-togethers at Tutor & Spunky’s, the Dana Point deli I owned for 25 years before retiring. But I ON LIFE AND LOVE AFTER 50 didn’t fix them up. They

Many couples who met there are still together. But not all. Some of the relationships have lasted for a month or so, while others resulted in marriage.

Sponsoring events like that is challenging. Why? There are always more single women than men, especially as we age.

Often, it’s been a ratio of 5- or 6-1. I’ve watched women walk in the door, see a limited number of men, and turn around and walk out.

Adoptable Pet of the Week: Coco

It takes time and effort to put on those no-cost events.

Last week, a Dana Point woman emailed: “Maybe you should have Meet and Greets more often so seniors have a place to go and socialize instead of staying home. I know you are busy, so maybe you can have someone else take charge. Just a suggestion.”

She’s never attended one of our events.

My answer to her: “More often? It’s difficult enough having one per month, just trying to round up enough men to make it interesting. More often than that? No thanks.”

Nearly every day, an email arrives in my inbox promoting new dating sites. This week, one arrived with the subject line: “An Easier Dating Site For Men Ages 50+.”

I usually ignore those emails, but this time I was curious so I clicked on it. It showed a picture of an attractive woman with this caption: “Local matchmaker has more older women & needs more men to match with female clients.”

The opening line read, “Meet Successful Dana Point Singles.” Turns out, it’s not an online dating site, but a matchmaking site, the kind where you pay a professional matchmaker to find dates for you.

The site stated, “Professional Matchmakers work with you to determine the exact type of man or woman that would be best for you, and then do their best to find that person and introduce you.”

“Do their best?” Wow, matchmakers are only as good as the people they have in their stable. Let me tell you, they are aware of the lack of men. I have had many of them contact me saying they were having an introductory cocktail party, and did I know of any men they could invite? No joke; it’s true.

It’s Just Lunch is a matchmaking service and on occasion has contacted me asking for the names of men. I decline, of course.

The ballpark cost for hiring a matchmaker? The article stated it’s between $675 and $25,000.

FROM THE ARCHIVES Sunshine was the first live bait boat to run on daily schedule from Newport Pier in the mid-1920s. When a report came of a harbor being developed at Dana Point, it would mean that the boat could leave from there without making the long boat ride from Newport Beach. This photo is estimated to have been taken in either the 1940s or 1950s.

The site also stated: “Matchmaking is, by its nature, a local endeavor. That means local offices staffed by warm, experienced, real people—not algorithms.”

Maybe the office is in Dana Point or San Clemente or San Juan Capistrano, but if so, I’m unaware of it. Avoid professional matchmakers. Read the online reviews; they are frightening. People often feel ripped off.

So, I’ll remain a columnist, and leave the matchmaking to, well, the professional

matchmakers, wherever they are.

Honoring Their Service Community Comes Together for Veterans Day Service

undreds gathered on Monday, Nov. 11 to honor those who have served. The City of Dana Point and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9934 conducted this year’s Veterans Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at Strand Vista Park.

U.S. Marine Sergeant Major Valerie Comacho was the keynote speaker for the event. She previously served with Dana Point Councilmember Jamey Federico at Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469 at Camp Pendleton. She currently is serving as the Sergeant Major at Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station in Camp Pendleton. She also served two tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

After being awarded several medals throughout her service, and after serving in the U.S. Marines for 24 years, Comacho plans to retire by the end of this year.

Members of the VFW Auxiliary 9934 unveiled three new memorial tablets now on display at the Veterans Memorial.

The proposed ordinance amends Sections 12.08.098 of the Dana Point Municipal Code to allow any officer, agent or employee of the City designated by the City Manager to have the authority and responsibility to enforce provisions of this Code, including any regularly employed or salaried peace officer of the City or police agency providing police services to the City, shall have the authority to issue citations for any violation of this Chapter. Boys Cross Country No. 2 Entering CIF-SS Prelims The Dana Hills boys cross country team is setting the stage for another potential championship run through the CIF-SS postseason.

The Dolphins already have Orange County and Sea View League championships under their belts heading into the CIF-SS preliminaries on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Riverside Cross Country Course.

Dana Hills is ranked No. 2 in CIF-SS Division 2 behind Newbury Park, as it has been in the past five CIF-SS polls. Newbury Park has been No. 1 in Division 2 all season.

Dana Hills and Newbury Park have already run head-to-head at the three-mile Riverside course this season.

At the Riverside Invitational on Oct. 26, the Dolphins beat the Panthers, 94-108.

Dana Hills sophomore Jai Dawson took second place at 15:00, with Newbury Park junior Thomas McDonnell in third place at 15:05. Dana Hills also ran that race without senior Carrick Denker, who was recovering from a gash suffered at the Orange County Championships.

Both teams also competed at the state championship course in the Clovis Invitational on Oct. 12. Newbury Park finished second, placing two runners in the top four, including the individual champion.

Dana Hills finished eighth with Denker as the top runner in 11th, but Dawson did not run in the meet.

The Dana Hills girls cross country team is ranked No. 12 in the Division 2 poll and will also race on Saturday.

The Dolphins girls will run first in the first Division 2 girls heat at 7:45 a.m. The Dana Hills boys will run in the second Division 2 boys heat at 8:35 a.m.

The top 12 teams in each heat will qualify for the finals, and any individuals who finish in the first 15 places overall and are not members of a qualifying team will also advance. Both Dana Hills teams should be set for finals qualification.

The CIF-SS championships will run at the Riverside course on Nov. 23, with the Division 2 girls at 7:45 a.m. and the Division 2 boys at 8:25 a.m.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at gofan.co/app/school/CIFSS. General admission is $10, and high school students with ID and children under 13 are $5.

Parking is $10 per car.

As a cross country coach, Dunn has been a part of 17 South Coast League titles, 10 county championships, three CIFSS Division 1 titles, seven CIF-SS Division 1 runners-up, three state championships, five state runners-up, five state third-place finishes, eight nationals appearances and one national third-place finish.

Two Teams Named to CIF-SS Watch Lists

Dunn Back as Head Track Coach Dana Hills boys cross country coach Craig Dunn is returning to his top position for the boys track and field team, the school announced on Thursday, Nov. 7.

Dunn had previously been the boys track and field head coach for 10 years before stepping down after the 2016 season to focus on the distance runners. Keith Chambers had been the head coach over the past two seasons.

In his previous stint as boys track head coach, Dunn and the Dolphins collected nine South Coast League titles, six Orange County Championships and the first and only CIF-SS Division 1 team championship in Capistrano Unified School District history in 2009.

Dunn’s track teams also qualified for the team nationals twice, and Dunn was county coach of the year twice.

Two Dana Hills winter sports teams were named to the CIF-SS preseason watch lists ahead of the start of the winter sports season on Monday, Nov. 18.

On Nov. 4, the Dolphins girls water polo team was marked as a team to watch in Division 3.

Last season, the girls water polo team advanced to the program’s first-ever CIFSS championship game in Division 4. The Dolphins were edged out by La Quinta for the title, 11-8.

Dana Hills won’t start its girls water polo season until Dec. 4 at JSerra and the El Dorado Tournament that weekend, Dec. 6-7.

On Tuesday, Nov. 12, the Dana Hills girls basketball team was named as a team to watch in Division 2A. Last season, the girls basketball team finished third in the South Coast League

and advanced to the Division 2AA playoffs.

The Dolphins lost in the first round to Orangewood Academy.

Dana Hills opens its season on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at Irvine High School and hosts El Toro on Thursday, Nov. 21.

Winter Sports Begin Monday, Nov. 18 The rest of the Dana Hills winter sports lineup gets started on Monday, Nov. 18.

The Dolphins boys basketball team tips off in the Santa Ana/Garden Grove Four City Classic on Tuesday, Nov. 19 against California at Century High School. Dana Hills plays at Santa Ana High School on Wednesday, Nov. 20, before bracket play begins on Thursday, Nov. 21.

The Dana Hills girls soccer team kicks off at home against Capistrano Valley on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. The Dolphins also play at Laguna Hills on Thursday, Nov. 21.

The Dana Hills boys soccer team gets going at home against St. Margaret’s on Nov. 26.

The Dana Hills wrestling program has its first match with the girls team at Capistrano Valley on Nov. 23. The boys team gets going on Dec. 3 at El Toro.

Clean Water Act Brought Before Supreme Court

ecause breakthroughs and breakout wins are always worth a celebration, big props this week to San Clemente’s Charlie Stevens, who earlier this month won his first-ever NSSA competition. Taking out the Open Boys Division at Church, it was a well-deserved victory for Charlie.

The 12-year-old regular-footer has been ripping lately, but that big, statementmaking contest win had previously eluded him. Not anymore. Throughout the contest, Charlie’s consistency and focus paid off, as he posted four 8-point rides. Working with local ripper Jeremy Carter, who’s been helping with the coaching duties, all those sessions at T-Street and Lowers have paid off.

Over the summer, Charlie—who’s supported by O’Neill and Dragon—also spent some time at the BSR Surf Resort in Waco, Texas, where he had the opportunity to develop his explosive air game. Because it’s a man-made wave, he got plenty of reps in and, once again, the hard work was evident in his surfing, as he’s taken his recent performances to the next level.

With fall in the air and winter right around the corner, we can’t wait to see what other good things are in store for Charlie when those west swells start bombing. DP

San Clemente-based Surfrider Foundation takes the ‘Clean Water Act case of the century’ to nation’s highest court

n Nov. 6, the Surfrider Foundation, a local environmental organization, went before the U.S. Supreme Court to defend the Clean Water Act. In this case, the San Clemente-based Surfrider Foundation’s Maui Chapter has been endeavoring to stop Maui County’s Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility from discharging millions of gallons of treated sewage into groundwater on a daily basis.

The contaminated groundwater flows to the ocean, which then causes a myriad of issues.

Billed as the “Clean Water Act case of the century,” Surfrider first filed the lawsuit in 2012, contending that Maui County’s use of underground injection wells had directly polluted the area’s groundwater, which then subsequently affected sensitive coral reefs and the public recreation area at Kahekili Beach.

Co-plaintiffs included Hawaii Wildlife Fund, Sierra Club-Maui Group and West Maui Preservation Association and Earthjustice.

“We are arguing against Maui County’s extremist position that unless a pipe goes directly into the ocean or a lake and river, it is completely unregulated by the Clean Water Act,” said David Henkin, staff attorney from Earthjustice’s Mid-Pacific office, who argued the case. “If the Supreme Dana Point Times November 15-21, 2019

Court endorses the county’s position, it would open a massive loophole for every polluter in the country to avoid regulation of their discharges by the law that protects the nation’s waterways.”

In a previous ruling, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with environmental groups that argued the groundwater discharges damaged a coral reef and amounted to a “direct” injection of wastewater. After years of working its way through the court system, the case landed before the Supreme Court on Nov. 6.

Up until 2016, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sided with the environmental groups’ stance, but under the Trump Administration, the Clean Water Act has been under fire.

The justices were reportedly divided on the case. Justices Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor and Stephen Breyer called Maui County’s argument a “road map” for other potential polluters in the future.

But Breyer also appeared to side with Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, who were concerned about safeguarding businesses and private homeowners from potential litigation.

A decision is not expected until the spring of 2020, but it could come in as late as June.

While the case specifically focuses on

Maui, the repercussions are anticipated to be wide-ranging and affect not just coastal communities around the U.S., but other places dealing with the issue of groundwater pollution.

This case is of particular interest for gas and oil companies. In a report from NBC News, the pipeline company Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, which operates more than 80,000 miles of pipelines transporting natural gas, crude oil and gasoline, was highlighted. The company is also named in another suit pending before the court, which contends it violated the Clean Water Act in an accidental pipeline discharge into the groundwater.

“We have been fighting for nine years for the protection of clean water and public health for all people,” Tim Lara, of the Surfrider Foundation Maui Chapter, said in a prepared statement from the organization.

“This case is about more than defending Maui’s coral reef at Kahekili Beach Park, which has been devastated by the 3-5 million gallons of wastewater dumped into groundwater every day by the County of Maui. This case is also about defending the Clean Water Act and its ability to protect our waterways from pollution, regardless of the route of discharge into protected waterways.” DP
