Judge Denies SLAPP Motion in Developer’s Lawsuit against Dana Point PAC THE LATEST: A judge has denied a SLAPP motion made by the defendants in Sanford Edward’s lawsuit against the Dana Point Taxpayers Association (DPTA)—a move that the defendants intend to appeal.

Edward, the developer for Headlands Reserve, LLC, filed the lawsuit for libel against DPTA (a local political action committee) regarding political mailers that were sent out leading up to the 2018 Dana Point City Council election. In the weeks prior to Nov. 6, 2018, DPTA published and distributed campaign mailers that opposed city council candidates Charles Payne, Mark McGinn and Joe Jaeger.

One mailer depicts all three candidates as puppets, with captions claiming Councilmember Debra Lewis teamed up with Edward to try to elect the three. Snippets of a lawsuit complaint the City of Dana Point filed against Headlands Reserve are highlighted to show the city accused Sanford of fraud after failing to pay more than $500,000 in an alleged contract breach.

Another mailer shows a photograph of Edward meeting with Payne and former Financial Review Committee Vice Chairman Buck Hill for lunch, with the caption: “Meet the kingmakers and the puppets.”

Following Edward’s accusation of defamation against DPTA, the defendants filed a strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPP) motion. A SLAPP is a lawsuit that’s intended to censor, intimidate and silence critics by burdening them with the cost of a legal defense. Judge Richard Lee denied the motion in its entirety.

According to the ruling, DPTA contended that the mailers were comprised of protected hyperbolic speech and that Edward is a public figure. Edward countered that the speech is defamatory by implication and that he has evidence that the publications were made with malice.

fraud,’ ” Judge Lee wrote.

Lee concluded that the statements in the mailers concerning the 2016 lawsuit are reasonably susceptible of defamatory meaning against the plaintiff.

However, the court also concluded the plaintiff’s claim arises from protected activity, “because the mailers in question are statements in writing made in a place open to the public or a public forum in connection with an issue of public interest,” per Code Civ. Proc. 425.16(e)(3).

The mailers were disseminated to voters in Dana Point during the 2018 election campaign season.

An Anti-SLAPP motion involves two steps: First, the court determines if the cause of action arose from protected activity; second, the court considers whether the plaintiff has demonstrated a probability of prevailing on the claim.

According to precedent set in Oasis West Realty, LLC v. Goldman, only a cause of action that satisfies both prongs of the anti-SLAPP statute is a SLAPP, subject to being stricken.

“When a SLAPP motion is filed, that freezes all discovery,” Edward said. “Now we’re going to work very hard to reveal who was behind these mailers. Over time, this trial will show who was involved.”

Attorney Bradley Hertz, who represents DPTA in this litigation, issued the following statement: “Although DPTA agrees with the trial court’s findings that Mr. Edward’s claim arises from DPTA’s protected activity and that Mr. Edward is a public figure relative to the subject matter of the lawsuit, DPTA disagrees with the Court’s denial of the motion.”

OCTA Outlines Conflicts with TCA in Committee Meeting THE LATEST: Orange County Transportation Authority’s Regional Planning and Highway Committee Meeting met on Monday, Oct. 6, for a regularly scheduled meeting. The agenda included an update on efforts to relieve South County traffic.

In light of the Transportation Corridor Agencies being in the process of studying toll road expansion options in South Orange County, OCTA staff provided a presentation with background information on efforts from both OCTA and TCA to address traffic in South County.

The presentation highlighted the South County Traffic Relief Effort Project Study Report-Project Development Support (PSRPDS), which is being prepared and developed by the TCA in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans)— the lead agency. The agencies will be moving forward in initiating the environmental phase to conduct more detailed studies.

“The efforts leading up to the environmental phase have raised concerns with OCTA,” OCTA CEO Darrell Johnson said in the report. “These concerns generally focus on a lack of meaningful stakeholder coordination, questionable technical analyses, and conflicts with Measure M2 and other improvements planned by OCTA.” PSR-PDS explored a set of 23 total ideas.

Monday’s presentation screened them down to eight—ideas 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 21. Those narrowed-down proposals include connecting Ortega Highway to Avery Parkway and SR-73; Interstate 5 widening with high-occupancy tolls (HOT) or general Page 3

purpose lanes south of Interstate 405; extending Los Patrones Parkway to Avenida La Pata with I-5 HOT lanes south of SR-73; extending SR-241 to SR-73; or extending SR-241 to I-5 via La Pata Crossing, or via Shorecliffs. A map of the various ideas is available in the online edition of this article.

The presentation addressed areas where OCTA staff felt the ideas conflicted with OCTA projects. In an interview with Dana Point Times, Johnson said that it is important voters get what they voted on.

“If you vote yes (on Measure M2), you expect those tax-funded projects to be built,” Johnson said. “It’s extremely concerning to us, and we take it very seriously that we deliver on our promises.”

In February 2018, OCTA initiated a project to build six new miles of carpool lanes between San Juan Creek Road and Avenida Pico on I-5. Ideas 11 and 12 would convert Measure M-funded carpool lanes—Avenida Pico to San Juan Creek Road—to HOT lanes, Johnson said.

“We find that, at best, confusing,” Johnson said. “And, at worst, offensive—from a good government standpoint.”

In a written statement provided by the TCA, the agency said the OCTA staff report issued for Monday’s meeting contained factual errors. “(The report) states that TCA is seeking options to extend its toll road network,” the statement said. “Many of the alternatives proposed also include features that would extend or provide bikeways, complete streets and/or sidewalks, ramps that are ADA-compliant and bikeway connections.”

TCA states the agency is keenly aware of the recently completed and ongoing Measure M projects along I-5 in South Orange County and respects OCTA’s Measure M commitments.

EYE ON DP (Cont. from page 3) “Given the planning year horizon of 2050 and the regional nature of the project, we believe it is important to consider alternatives on the I-5, as well as alternatives which provide an extension of the SR-241.”

In response to Johnson’s assertion that there has been a lack of “meaningful dialogue” between stakeholders,” the TCA statement said it is aware of OCTA’s concerns with the study in general, but TCA has had, and will continue to have, opportunities for robust input from the public and stakeholders, including OCTA. According to the TCA statement, “TCA’s public outreach and stakeholder involvement started in 2015—well before the state-mandated CEQA outreach was scheduled to start. TCA undertook an unprecedented outreach effort throughout Orange County, especially focusing on the southern part of the County.”

WHAT’S NEXT: The concerns outlined in the report will be brought to the OCTA Board of Directors on Oct. 28. Johnson said that as public scoping begins for the TCA, OCTA will make its comments formally known during a public-comment period.

“Speaking on behalf of myself, as an individual and as a stakeholder,” Johnson said, “engagement is really important. It’s important that we are open and honest about these projects for the opportunity of meaningful engagement.”

TCA’s statement said both TCA and OCTA are committed to preserving Measure M projects and that many of those projects that OCTA is preparing to construct will likely have not been in operation for at least a decade or more before TCA begins to construct any project.

Tracking Poll Shows Continued Support for CUSD’s Proposed Bond Measure THE LATEST: Recent tracking polls to see how a regional bond measure to upgrade schools in Dana Point, Aliso Viejo and Laguna Niguel would fare in the March 2020 election show that voters in those communities continue to favor such a referendum.

The polling data True North Research presented to the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees earlier this month has the potential bond referendum tracking about 56% to nearly 61%— above the minimum threshold needed for a measure to pass.

True North President Tim McLarney said that while the measure appears feasible to pass, CUSD should still invest in outreach and education efforts.

“You’re going to need to continue in

terms of outreach and education,” McLarney told the trustees, adding: “You don’t want to take the foot off the gas now.”

“A poll like this isn’t a crystal ball,” he later stated, noting it’s essentially a “snapshot in time.”

“So that’s a reminder to us that you have to make smart decisions on how to craft this measure . . . so I would certainly encourage the rallying of the troops,” McLarney said.

The results of the latest polling data were released a few weeks before the trustees are likely to determine whether to place two regional bond measures on the ballots for the upcoming Primary Election in March.

One bond measure would go before voters in San Clemente and Capistrano Beach to fix classrooms and educational facilities within the Southern School Facilities Improvement District, or SFID 2. The other proposed bond would encompass schools within Aliso Viejo, Dana Point and Laguna Niguel—collectively referred to as the Western SFID, or SFID 3.

Only voters in each of those districts would have a say in whether the respective bonds pass. Money raised from those bonds, if passed, would support only schools within the respective areas.

Both potential bond measures are expected to propose a tax levy of $34 for every $100,000 of assessed property value.

The Western SFID bond is expected to provide the district with $293 million in proceeds to renovate schools in that region. A large percentage of the funds raised from that bond would pay for upgrades at Dana Hills High School, Aliso Niguel High School and Niguel Hills Middle School.

The Southern SFID is expected to yield $113 million in proceeds. If voters in San Clemente pass that bond, more than $87 million of those funds would pay for classroom renovations and new buildings at San Clemente High School.

For a bond measure to pass, it needs to receive a minimum of 55% approval from voters. In 2016, CUSD proposed its $889 million Measure M bond, but it failed after receiving only 45% approval.

Between April and May, True North Research surveyed more than 1,000 Aliso Viejo, Dana Point and Laguna Niguel voters who were likely to participate in the 2020 primary and general elections.

Based on what True North referred to as an “initial ballot test” in which a sample ballot question was posed to the respondents, the firm found that about 55% supported the bond this past spring.

In True North’s tracking poll last month, 1,176 voters within the Western SFID were asked a similar “initial ballot question,” to which more than 58% said they would support a sample ballot measure that authorized $300 million in bonds, levying about $.03 per $100 of assessed value.

After providing participants with a

series of positive arguments in support of the ballot measure, True North conducted second ballot tests during the April/ May survey and follow-up tracking poll in September.

In the spring survey, support for the bond measure during the second ballot test was 56.1%. In the September poll, it grew to 59.8%.

During both the February and April/ May surveys, final ballot tests were conducted in which participants listened to negative arguments against the bond. The results of the first survey had put support at 53.2%, while the tracking poll in September put it at 56.1%.

WHAT’S NEXT: CUSD is expected to have the trustees approve the proposed bond measures during the board’s Oct. 16 meeting, officially calling for them to be placed on the March 3, 2020 ballots.—Shawn Raymundo

TBID Hearing, Town Center and OC Housing Finance Trust on Council Agenda THE LATEST: Dana Point City Council will be meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 15 for a regularly scheduled meeting.

The agenda includes a public hearing for the renewal of the Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID) to continue the program and assessments from Jan. 1 2020 through June 30, 2020.

In 2008, the larger hotels requested the city of Dana Point’s assistance to form a TBID. The TBID allows these essential businesses to better compete by assessing themselves to collectively market Dana Point as a destination. TBID members aim to collectively market Dana Point as an overnight destination.

“An increasing supply of luxury accommodations along the coast has threatened to reduce the Dana Point market share,” the staff report states. “Over 1,000 new rooms have been brought online in our coastal region in the last six years, substantially increasing the number of luxury rooms in our market. It cannot be taken for granted that Dana Point hotels would be able to continue the same level of success without the destination marketing to support them; and their success directly allows the City to fund quality public amenities.”

Other than administrative support and collections, there are no costs to the City of Dana Point associated with renewal of the Dana Point Tourism Business Improvement District.

by Hilton and The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel. The proposed new members are

Dana Point Marina Inn, Riviera Beach Spa Resort, Best Western Plus Marina Shores Hotel, Capistrano Surfside Inn, Beachfront Inn, Blue Lantern Inn and Best Western Plus Dana Point Inn-by-theSea. Council will conduct the public hearing and then vote on whether to adopt a resolution to renew the Dana Point TBID. Additionally, the Dana Point Harbor Partners (DPHP) have been invited to present their findings after conducting three public outreach events on the harbor’s revitalization. As was reported at the Sept. 23 planning commission meeting, the DPHP have stated that they received over 1,000 unique comment cards that will be summarized for the council during their presentation.

Council will also further discuss a proposal for a ballot measure to reduce the minimum ground floor height from 18 feet to 14 feet, as contained in the 2008 Town Center Plan. Amendments to the Town Center Plan require a ballot measure. The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce brought forth the request that city council facilitate the amendment during the Oct. 1 council meeting.

Per the agenda item, should council proceed with the initiated ballot measure, council will adopt a resolution to submit a city council-sponsored ordinance to voters for a general election to be held on March 3, 2020.

Recommended action calls for a motion to transfer $85,000 from General Fund Operations Contingency Account to the City Clerk Professional Services Account for election services. Election costs fall between $42,000 and $52,000. The cost of postage for vote-by-mail ballot return envelopes is estimated between $8,500 and $10,000. The cost for a new Vote Center model is estimated to be about $21,000.

SCWD serves the communities of Dana Point, South Laguna Beach, and areas of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.

Earlier this year, the SCWD Board of Directors certified the environmental impact report for the proposed Doheny Desalination Project.

Annual Surfing Santa Contest Returns The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel’s annual Surfing Santa Contest and Holiday Surfboard Auction returns, with both events benefiting Surfers Healing, a nonprofit that provides autistic kids the gift of surfing.

Surfing Santa and Stand Up Paddle Board Contest will be held at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 23-24. After those events, the resort will host the Annual Holiday Surfboard Auction from Saturday, Nov. 23 through Dec. 31, featuring a variety of artistry surfboards by celebrated artists and iconic shapers such as Wyland, Firewire, and Chad Smith, lead drummer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. With the hotel’s commitment to supporting worthy causes, both seasonal events benefit Surfers Healing. In 2018, the resort raised more than $44,000 for the charity, with a total donation of $390,000 since collaborating with the nonprofit 11 years ago.

“Every year, we anticipate these special events, continuing to elevate our annual tradition by connecting with our local community in a meaningful way and raising more funds for Surfers Healing,” says Bruce Brainerd, General Manager of The RitzCarlton, Laguna Niguel. “It’s an honor to see our mission of giving back to children with autism lived out for the past 11 years with so much support from locals, artists, and creatives. Dana Point Doctor Honored for Regenerative Aesthetics Dr. Jeannine Koffman at Riviera Laser Studio was honored with an award at the 2019 Aesthetic Show for best nonsurgical facial rejuvenation enhancement.

Candidates were asked to submit a beforeand-after photo with a 100-word description detailing what procedures and products were used. Koffman’s entry showed the before photo of a 70-year-old female patient with extensive wrinkles and sun damage.

Koffman used six syringes of Bellafill and one syringe of Sculptra prior to MiXto Fractional CO2 resurfacing. She administered a wrinkle touchup six months later with five syringes of Bellafill. Erbium laser treatment was used to remove nevi (birthmarks or moles) and actinic keratosis (rough, scaly patches of skin as a result of sun exposure). The patient also received ongoing maintenance treatments with Cutera’s Excel V 532 nm laser.

Koffman is the co-founder of Riviera Laser, a practice focused on nonsurgical facial aesthetics via lasers and regenerative longlasting biostimulants. She is a trainer and speaker for Suneva Medical, a Galderma Gain trainer, Prollenium Versa trainer and a Merz trainer. In 2013, Dr. Kofford won The Aesthetic Award for Best Nonsurgical Facial Rejuvenation Enhancement. This win-

ning entry featured the signature MiXto/ Bellafill/Sculptra combination treatment. In 2014, she also won The Aesthetic Award for Best Facial Injectable Enhancement.

SJC Skatepark Coalition to Host Skate Jam in Nov. The San Juan Capistrano Skatepark Coalition recently announced that it will host its next Skate Jam event at the city’s community center late next month.

The nonprofit group’s Skate Jams are meant to spread awareness for the need to have a skate park built in San Juan while also providing the local skateboarding community with a safe and legal environment to practice tricks in a makeshift skate park.

The group has also been continuously working to raise funds toward the construction of a park, which the city estimates will cost just shy of $2 million. In March 2017, the city approved a conceptual design of the skate park that’s tentatively planned to be built on the northwest end of the San Juan Capistrano Sports Park.

Near the start of the year, Peter Carey, the Coalition’s president, declared that the group has a fundraising goal of reaching $1 million to help pay for the potential park. Part of that goal included reaching out to corporate sponsors for donations.

The Coalition’s Spring Skate Jam this past May attracted dozens of skateboarders from throughout South County. In an email from Carey to the Coalition’s members last month, he exclaimed that the next event “should be our biggest turnout so far!”

The upcoming Skate Jam will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23.

OCASA Jumps Hurdle for Securing College Prep Orange County Academy of Sciences and Arts, a K-8 public charter school in Laguna Niguel, received unanimous approval from the Capistrano Unified School District in September to open OCASA College Prep.

It will introduce participants to the plants and animals located in this Coastal Sage Scrub habitat. Participants will learn about the rare and endangered animals and plants that live here, as well as those typically found in this type of habitat.

The Headlands Nature Walk occurs on the first Saturday of each month and begins at 9 a.m. at the Nature Interpretive Center, 34558 Scenic Drive, Dana Point.

I did not attend the Oct. 1 Dana Point City Council meeting, although I did read in last week’s paper that Michael Fox (Chamber of Commerce President) is proposing first floor, ceiling-height changes to the Lantern District Zoning (a reduction in ceiling-height requirements). To paraphrase, Mr. Fox believes it is in the best interest of the local business community. I believe his comments are incomplete; I wish he would also have included that these types of changes are also in the best interest of residents.

If you are like our family, you often discuss the district changes with neighbors and friends. Whether at the Redo Market on Del Prado, or running down to surf, or walking the harbor, each discussion includes: 1. “I like what they are doing to bring more walking and activity to the area,” and 2. “But I dislike the size of the buildings.” Think about it, has anyone ever had a conversation that doesn’t include those two concepts?

The original Town Center Plan (and what is used today) contained a narrative which described a small-town feel, but the detailed requirements behind the scenes never really matched up.

This isn’t a criticism of the original subcommittee, but my guess is they never envisioned a consolidation of small lots in order to meet these detailed requirements. Two years ago, the Measure H initiative was good in reducing the ability for the city council to approve a large project requesting variances. Although, on the flip side, it removed any possible incentives for smaller developments to work. And at this point, most, if not all, of the projects being brought forth will be a consolidated set of small lots.

Only one project has been approved within the last two years: The Greer project. If someone took both the elevation drawings of this project and the in-process Raintree project, removed the names and addresses, 95% of the community would not be able to determine which project was approved with variances. Both developments are a consolidation of small lots, with rectangular structures consisting of very straight lines.

Moving forward, my intent is not to complain about how we arrived at this Page 9

point without providing suggestions. Mr. Fox has started the effort, but I would hope we can expand upon his initial concept. We need to make it just as attractive to develop a small lot as it is to consolidate five lots and build one structure. Combining incentives for smaller developments, with the corresponding scaled additional requirements for the larger developments could help drive future development toward a “small town feel.” Significant economies of scale exist in construction and development—and I believe the larger projects can certainly handle increased requirements.

Prior to the 2020 city election, let’s put all appropriate criteria on the table for discussion, and work with the business community, residents, and small-lot owners to make the changes needed to encourage smaller scale development.

the issue. This is no surprise. He owns rental property and stands to personally profit from such an ordinance. Plus, proSTR special interests spent thousands on his candidacy.

It’s also no surprise he is adamant the ordinance should exempt HOAs, since he lives in one. This would allow him to personally profit while guaranteeing he never has to live next to a short-term rental.

During the campaign, Federico promised a room full of voters that any potential STR ordinance would be put to a vote of the residents. He now seems poised to renege on that promise.

Watch to see if he follows the law and recuses himself from this matter in which he has a financial stake. And watch to see whether he keeps his promise and puts it on the ballot.

We will soon find out whether he represents our residents or his own self-interest. And we will see whether he trusts the residents to vote on a matter that greatly affects us all, or tries to shove this down our throats a second time.

Here we go again. It wasn’t that long ago the Dana Point City Council forced a flawed and unpopular Short Term Rental (STR) ordinance onto Dana Point residents. Our residents rose up en masse and defeated it in a voter referendum.

ne question that has been on some people’s minds for the past year or so is, why are we getting a stand-alone film on the DC supervillain, the Joker? Todd Phillips’ Joker was a peculiar case with Phillips, a documentarian-turned-comedy director branching out with drama, and the always stellar Joaquin Phoenix as the title character.

There was a fair amount of potential with the combo, but did it reach its potential?

In a grim Gotham City, Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) dresses as a clown professionally and lives with his elderly mother, Penny (Frances Conroy). Fleck has this idea of venturing into stand-up comedy that stems from his being a fan of talk-show host Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro), even though Arthur’s not particularly witty or even naturally funny.

He’s also had enough of the lower class being treated as irrelevant to the wealthy and thinks the best way to deal with it is violently.

If any of this sounds familiar, that’s because Joker is not only in a very familiar DC Comic universe, it’s also

taking cues from dozens of other famous movies with cult followings—including A Clockwork Orange (1971), Taxi Driver (1976) and The King of Comedy (1983).

So the next question now is . . . why? It’s hard to tell if Phillips is a legitimate fan of Batman or the Joker, as the tone and atmosphere of the film feels like its own thing; but then we get reminders of Gotham and the Wayne family that almost kill the mood.

On top of this, Phillips is really not as interesting and creative of a filmmaker as the directors he’s paying homage to, which is probably why his forte used to be raunchy comedies. The overbearing music score on top of the on-the-nose dialogue and editing feels amateurish, plus most of the subversive attempts feel juvenile. Phoenix is still great, as usual, yet you could already see a more nuanced version of this same type of role in the overlooked independent drama You Were Never Really Here (2017). If I wanted to see a modern take on The King of Comedy’s theme, I could stick with Nightcrawler (2014) and Ingrid Goes West (2017). DP

Widow Has Given Up on Dating, But Should She?

ichele wrote, “I don’t participate in dating. I’ve been widowed for 18 years (at age 49) and still miss my husband. I tried online dating but almost got scammed my first time. The few people who contacted me were beyond bizarre. I gave up on that.

“I’ve been to dances, but the men seemed to ask the women to dance who were dressed very provocatively; that’s not me. I would leave saying, what’s wrong with me?

It was depressing. I gave up on that.

“At most singles functions, women far outnumber men. It’s like a meat market.

“I enjoy being with my friends and going on vacation. My attitude is, as my mom used to say, ‘If it’s meant to be, it will be. ’ ” My response to Michele: In 1994, when I began writing about dating in your 50s and up, the ratio of single women to single men in their early 50s was approximately 1-to-1.

As the years passed, more and more women contacted me, asking, “Where are the men?” The ratio drew closer to 2-to-1, women to men, for people in their mid-60s.

Some women suggested that the ratio was even larger, because many men “weren’t relationship material.” However, good guys were (and still are) out there.

I remember Dr. Ruth’s response to a woman at an AARP convention who asked, “Where are the men?” Dr. Ruth said, “The ratio is a fact of life. But, if you have a nice appearance, a positive attitude, and are willing to get out ON LIFE AND and socialize, you can efLOVE AFTER 50 fectively shrink that ratio.”

Women and men were drawn to it, because they could reach out beyond their city and local boundaries to find potential mates.

It didn’t take long for scammers to figure out that lots of women online were lonely and vulnerable, especially widows.

Granted, lots of couples have formed as a result of internet dating, but romance scams also bloomed.

At the Sept. 28 Greek Festival in San Juan Capistrano, a reader of this column introduced herself to Greta and me. In a short conversation, she mentioned the shortage of men at singles events.

What can I say to Michele and other single women about later-in-life dating?

Don’t give up; keep your eyes open for opportunities to meet a potential mate.

Be assertive, not aggressive. If you see a man who appeals to you (age close to yours, no wedding ring, no soup on his shirt, combed hair, no odor, no spinach in his teeth), smile and make a fun comment, such as “Nice jacket. Nice car. Nice dog. What’s the dog’s name? Where do you buy your spinach?”

Or, in a grocery store, say: “Is this a good wine?” or “Is this watermelon ripe?”

And, be ready to pay for the coffee (his and yours). If he’s worth his salt, he’ll offer to go Dutch. Better yet, he’ll offer to pay the tab. If this makes you uncomfortable, at least smile or wink. Be positive.

That’s the state of senior dating nowadays, 26 years after I began writing about it.

Michele should continue to get out and enjoy life with her women friends. She’s still young at 67.

‘Greatest Show’ DHHS Showcases Spirit in Circus Show

ana Hills High School pulled out all the stops for its homecoming celebration on Friday, Oct. 4.

The show and dance were themed “P.T. Grimmy’s Greatest Homecoming Show on Earth,” showcasing early days of American entertainment and the romantic side of circus culture.

The name was a tribute to Dana Hills’ beloved “Grimmy,” longtime P.A. announcer and homecoming master of ceremonies Merritt Grimm. It was the final homecoming halftime show for Grimm, 79, after serving in variety of capacities at Dana Hills since the school’s founding in 1972.

It was also the final homecoming for Dana Hills’ longtime activities director, Ken Nedler, also known as the “Podfather” to the Dolphins.

Grimm served as the ringleader for the four-class, circus-themed halftime show.

“The goal is always to raise as much money as possible,” Killebrew said. “But this is also a great opportunity to be out in the community. Everyone working the event is volunteering. High school students with the local Interact Club will be working the VIP section.”

“It’s really awesome seeing all these volunteers always looking to do good for the community,” Killebrew said. “Service to others . . . it’s very soul-satisfying.”

T

he annual Dana Point Lobster Fest returns to Dana Point for a 10th year on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 4 p.m., as presented by the Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary.

The event offers a variety of meal-size options, from single lobster and steak dinners to all-you-can-eat access, with Doheny State Beach as a backdrop.

“We host events like these to support the community,” said Mike Killebrew, assistant city manager for Dana Point and Rotary President. “We don’t have our own charitable cause, if you will. . . . Our cause is serving other charities.”

The Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Club has been in existence for about 30 years. Killebrew has been involved for 12 years, he says.

Football Takes First Loss, Keeps Focus Ahead Dana Hills took its first loss of the season, as Laguna Hills went for it all in overtime and got it with a two-point conversion for a 28-27 win, ending the Dolphins’ record-setting 6-0 start in both teams’ Sea View League opener on Friday, Oct. 4.

“We put ourselves in the position we wanted to be in,” Dana Hills coach Phil Skinner said. “It is what it is. Made some errors early on, played good football in the second half, and came back to be in a spot where we had a chance to win the football game. It just didn’t work out for us.”

una and bass filled the boats this week at Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said the offshore tuna fishing was a highlight for the past week.

On a 1 ½-day trip last week, the Fury hit full limits on yellowfin tuna catches for all anglers on the trip. Trips for tuna will be a focus in the immediate future.

Along the shore, bass fishing continues to be the top hit. Water has stayed up in the 68-70-degree range, which has made for more strong action in the kelp.

The trips are also seeing a good catches on sheephead.

Woolley said the three-quarter-day trips had trouble in deep water with some heavy current, but the trips were still pulling in rockfish and sculpin.

The Dana Hills girls volleyball team rebounded from back-to-back losses to San Juan Hills and league-leading Aliso Niguel with a sweep of Trabuco Hills on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

The Dolphins improved to 17-12 overall and 3-3 in league to set up a fight for second place in the South Coast League and Division 2 playoff seeding.

Dana Hills played at El Toro on Thursday, Oct. 10, but results were not available at press time. The Dolphins beat El Toro in four sets on Sept. 24. A win over El Toro would lock down third place and a guaranteed playoff berth for Dana Hills.

If Dana Hills beat El Toro, the Dolphins would sit a half-game behind San Juan Hills (19-6, 4-2) for second place in the league standings heading into their showdown at Dana Hills on Monday, Oct. 14.

‘The Future Is Local’ West Coast Board Riders 2019-20 season gets underway this weekend

T

he West Coast Board Riders (WCBR) movement continues to gain momentum, and the 2019-20 season is set to kick off on Saturday, Oct. 12, at San Onofre State Park.

Last year, it was the San Clemente Board Riders Club winning the title. Coming out swinging with another stacked team, they’ll be looking to go back-to-back this season. But that’s obviously easier said than done. In their own backyard, the Dana Point Board Riders will be hoping to spoil San Clemente’s party, and there’s plenty of other incredible talent percolating up throughout the state of California.

Since its inception in 2017, the West Coast Board Riders has grown in leaps and bounds.

“The West Coast Board Riders has taken off as one of the most important movements in all of surfing,” said Don Meek, managing partner of the organization. “We are now 14 clubs strong, with over 1,500 members who will be competing in some of the best waves in California. With the amazing energy that all of our clubs are putting into their own communities, we are confident when we say, ‘The future is local.’ ” This season, there will be a total of 11 events up and down the coast. The 14 clubs are broken into three regions.

They’ll be joined by Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas and La Jolla. Dana Point will be competing in the Central division, which includes Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach and Seal Beach.

And beyond the regular-season rallies, the 2019-20 season will also include a specialty event in partnership with the Roland Sands Moto Beach Classic on Oct. 26 and the WCBR All-Stars in partnership with Jack’s Surfboards at the Jack’s Pro in March 2020.

The West Coast Board Riders is also continuing to build its base of sponsor support.

Returning sponsors for the 2019-20 season include Banzai Bowls, Caliente Southwest Grille, Billabong and O’Neill. And new for this year, Clif Bar, Olloclip, Huntington Surf & Sport, Live Heats, Freesurf Magazine, Surfing Heritage & Culture Center and Zebra House Coffee have all jumped on board.

started two years ago and where it is today, it’s impressive to see the growth, and it speaks to the grassroots passion that the surf clubs evoke.

The West Coast Board Riders is the brainchild of Huntington Beach surfers Casey Wheat, Chris Moreno and Ziggy Williams. Seeing a need to bring local communities together and share their generational histories and legacies, their mission has been to provide structure and support for city-based surf clubs to organize and compete.

“When we started WCBR, we were inspired by the board riders clubs in Australia and the way they’ve maintained their momentum and stoke, and united their local communities for more than 50 years,” said Wheat. “Talk to any successful surfer from Oz, and they’ll tell you that their local club has played a huge part in their success.”

calling for a mid-range southwest swell through the second half of the week that will bring wave heights into the waist- to shoulder-high range. That swell starts to drop off into the weekend, bringing things into the knee- to waist-high zone. Conditions look as if they’ll remain clean through the mornings before light afternoon westerlies add a little texture to the surface.

The contest this Saturday will be the season opener for the South division. It will take place at Church on Saturday, Oct 12.

The Dana Point Board Riders will take to the water for the first time this season on Saturday, Oct. 19, in the Billabong At Newport contest.

The 2019-20 West Coast Board Riders season will culminate with the WCBR Championships, which are scheduled for Saturday, May 9, at Lower Trestles.

A 12-year-old in seventh grade at Marco Forster Middle School, he’s a distinguished member of the school’s surf team, as well as a member of the Dana Point Board Riders Club.

fun to be around; basically it’s the epitome of a Salt Creek super grom,” said Eric Diamond, president of the Dana Point Board Riders Club.

At a recent surf day in Doheny in which the club shared the stoke with the Capistrano Boys and Girls Club, Collings was right there in the mix, helping out and spreading the “aloha.”

“I loved helping out and volunteering with the Dana Point crew, It was a really special day, and I was honored to be a part of it,” said Collings.

“It’s not just about surfing competitions. Christian is seeing how important it is to help out in our surfing community by volunteering in the club and paying it forward. We’re lucky to have him as a member,” Diamond said. DP
