Follow the Light: Larry “Flame” Moore Monument Returns to Salt Creek THE LATEST: A monument rock memorializing the legacy of Larry “Flame” Moore has found its permanent home at the Point in Salt Creek Beach after Orange County officials determined its original placement had not been authorized.

The plaque stone was created and placed at the Point, near the lifeguard tower in 2015, a decade after Moore’s death. He was the photo editor for San Clemente-based Surfing magazine—a role he held for 30 years—and was known for his close-up, sharp action shots with wide angles. Many professional surfers and surf photographers have attributed their successful careers to Moore’s photos and mentorship.

“Salt Creek became his studio. Moore really paved the way for photography within the surf industry. His perfectionism set the bar,” said Rick Erckeneff, a South Coast Water District Director, surfer and friend to Moore. “His motto ‘follow the light’ translated into his amazing shots.”

OC Parks had removed the monument from the Point in February and placed it in the Cooper Center in Santa Ana, while its ownership and permanent location were being determined. The Surfing Heritage and Culture Center in San Clemente took ownership and deeded it as a donation to OC Parks, SHACC Executive Director Glenn Brumage said. The plaque rock—weighing an estimated 3,300 pounds—was returned to the Point on Thursday, Oct. 11.

Story Pole Ordinance To Be Discussed in December THE LATEST: Dana Point City Council met Tuesday, Oct. 16, for its regularly scheduled meeting. In a 3-1 vote, with Councilmember Paul Wyatt’s absence, the council approved a motion to table a discussion on a proposed story pole ordinance.

Story poles are used to depict the size and shape of a proposed structure or an extension to an existing building in order to provide a visual aid for residents, staff personnel and members of the decisionmaking bodies in their evaluation of a project application.

When the ordinance discussion was brought forward, Mayor Pro Tem Joseph Muller made a motion to move the discussion to a later meeting because Councilmember Paul Wyatt was not present.

“This is a quorum. We need to continue business, this is simply for review,” Councilmember Debra Lewis said. “I don’t see how this has merit, but if you want to delay this, go ahead.”

Muller said the ordinance is a major stepping stone for the city and that each member of council needed to be present for discussion.

During the Sept. 4 council meeting, Lewis asserted story poles allow the public to be aware of the impact of potential construction to their communities and encourage community awareness.

District has been awarded $300,000 to prevent leaks and upgrade meter technology.

The U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Reclamation granted Moulton Niguel funds for its “Advanced Metering Infrastructure” program. The district’s service area includes six cities, including Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano.

Moulton Niguel was one of 54 projects in the entire country to receive funding from the federal government’s water and energy efficiency grant program.

The advanced metering infrastructure upgrade is expected to conserve 505 acrefeet of water every year, which is nearly 165 million gallons of water annually. In addition to conserving water, automatic meters will save Moulton Niguel customers money by removing the expense of in-person meter reading.

WHAT’S NEXT: The proposed story pole ordinance is now scheduled to be discussed during the Dec. 4 meeting. Three out of five Councilmembers potentially voting on the ordinance will be determined on Election Day, Nov. 6. Following the council’s review of the ordinance, it will be forwarded to the Planning Commission for its consideration. After the commission’s review, staff would return the ordinance to Council for final consideration and approval as a formal Zone Text & Local Coastal Program Amendment. —LB

THE LATEST: A philanthropist and former member of the Ocean Institute’s Board of Directors passed away at age 81. James Swenson died in his home in Dana Point after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Swenson’s successful business—Details Inc.—was founded on the goal of bringing high-tech printed circuit boards out of research and into the marketplace, according to a press release. The company grew from four employees to 500 and developed a client list that included Apple, IBM, Motorola and Compaq. After selling the company, Swenson used the profits to create the Swenson Family Foundation. The

Trustees Adopt Resolution to Sever Ties with CUSD Foundation THE LATEST: The Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees on Wednesday, Oct. 10, adopted a resolution effectively distancing the district from an organization that raises funds for it.

The Board Voted 5-0, with trustees Patricia Holloway and Amy Hanacek absent, to vote in favor of the resolution. It was brought for the board’s consideration after concerns were raised about how the Capistrano Unified School District Foundation for Education was managing funds it raised for the district.

The resolution calls for the district to direct the CUSD Foundation to “cease and desist from raising funds as the CUSD or Capistrano Unified School District Foundation, or in any way that suggests to unwitting donors that the CUSD Foundation is endorsed by, or any form associated with, the Capistrano Unified School District.”

According to a board report, the CUSD Foundation issued a statement on April 12 indicating that its Board of Directors became aware of “serious financial irregularities” believed to involve a former executive director who resigned in December 2017. On May 2, the foundation denied those requests to turn over all funds in its possession raised for the district, stating that it would be illegal to transfer or turn over funds or approval authority to a public school district.

The report says the district officials researched that claim and found that the law did not preclude the foundation from doing those things.

WHAT’S NEXT: The resolution notes that the superintendent or her designee “shall take any and all lawful action” to implement the resolution, including financial audits, efforts to enforce transparency and legal action. —Alex Groves www.danapointtimes.com

Changes Coming to Louise Leydon Park The City of Dana Point is working to honor the memory of Louise Leydon by updating the park dedicated in her name by adding a number of new modern enhancements.

Louise Leydon was an influential member of the early Capistrano Beach community, well known for both her landscape paintings and civic involvement in the Dana Point community. After former Dana Point Mayor Carlos Olvera wrote an article highlighting the importance of Louise Leydon’s life, Dana Point staff set out to give her namesake park a few needed design and landscaping changes.

“We are honored to be able to commemorate Louise’s love of her local community by bringing more of her spirit and legacy into the park that bears her name,” Dana Point City Manager Mark Denny said in a press release.

The newly completed park renovations include two interpretive panels. The first explains the history behind the creation of the park; the second tells the story of Louise Leydon’s life and her accomplishments in art and involvement in the community. Landscape improvements include removal of 11 non-native Melaleuca quinquenervia trees, which have been replaced with fig trees that Louise loved in her own yard. The existing monument sign will be replaced with a new welcome sign that highlights an original Louise Leydon plein air painting. The existing landscaping will be enhanced with flowers and shrubs that Louise enjoyed and had at her Capistrano Beach home.

To further modernize the park, the City has made the park paths more wheelchair-accessible. A new wheelchair accessible picnic table is being added and a wheelchair-accessible drinking fountain was also installed that supports refillable water bottles and refillable dog bowls for the many dog walkers that enjoy the park.

I believe climate change is real, so we need to choose representatives who support a national tax on carbon production. The money produced by this tax can either go back to you or be used to reduce climate change in other ways.

Inhibit the carbon producers with this tax. Now is the time to act or it will be too late to react!

AN ELEPHANT NEVER FORGETS DANA YARGER, Dana Point

Most residents of Dana Point remember the 10 weeks of fun and excitement generated by the Elephant Parade.

Public art and cultural events like the Elephant Parade are not just good for our residents’ quality of life, they also create tourism, municipal reputation and revenue. Because of changes in the City Council and city staff in the past four years, the momentum behind these inspiring public art events has been lost.

More than one million people visit Laguna Beach each summer, many of them attending that city’s traditional art exhibitions and festivals. We need to find a way to lure some of those tourists to Dana Point to spend their time and money.

How? Many do not know how Elephant Parade actually came to Dana Point. I was appointed ambassador for the Elephant Parade Foundation for the United States after supporting the project in Singapore.

Laura Seeley and I had just moved from San Francisco to Dana Point while I was

introducing Elephant Parade to major U.S. markets. I was introduced to Scott Schoeffel, then-Dana Point City Councilman. Less than one week after we first spoke, Schoeffel put together a committee of city staff and representatives from our four major resort hotels to explore the possibility of hosting Elephant Parade in Dana Point, its first stop in this country. Together, they convinced me that I should launch Elephant Parade in my newly adopted city. A number of the parade’s precious pachyderms can still be seen roaming our town and at our gallery.

Laura Seeley and I became residents on Del Prado, invested in our building on Del Prado and opened our business/art galleries. We are ground-zero people for what has evolved in the Lantern District and are proud of that distinction. For many good reasons, we favor the highest quality development possible in our district. We are not looking for big boxes or a strip mall with no parking in what was intended to be the image center of this wonderful town. Dana Point is a much better city than that. We have only one chance to get it right.

I personally appreciate the efforts of all the dedicated people who have served on our City Council. But I believe we have lost our way of late. The insults, acrimony, and special interests seeking only financial gain that have sadly become common features of our city government have not been the best for Dana Point.

I particularly feel we all should be grateful for the innovative business, cultural and community leadership that Scott Schoeffel has provided our city for so many years in the past. If our city is to succeed in forming and implementing the best vision for Dana Point’s future, I believe it is critical to encourage Schoeffel and his district neighbors to return him to the City Council this Nov. 6.

Elephants symbolize family, loyalty, good fortune. Most important of all, elephants never forget.

KEEP OUR DISTRICT GOOD BRIAN MARYOTT, San Juan Capistrano

Life in the 49th Congressional District is good. I believe our economy is strong, unemployment is low, and businesses are flourishing. That means more people are working, and enjoying and enhancing our local economy.

Diane Harkey has lived in this district for over 30 years, serving in elected office for over 15 years. She understands

our issues, and has helped our district evolve over time into the strong cities and communities they are today.

But, we are all at risk of losing what we hold dear. The Democrats’ agenda would limit all of us to a government-run health care system, and one estimated to cost $32 trillion! I think a Democrat-majority Congress would have us facing oppressive taxes and regulations that we simply can’t afford.

Diane Harkey will work across the aisle as she always has done, to get our District and Southern California the federal funding and programs that we need. She has not shied away from tackling some of our biggest problems, expediting the removal of spent fuel at San Onofre, improving access to mental health services for our Veterans and our families, and keeping taxes in check so we all can afford to live in this district we love. Her opponent offers no relevant experience, just personal attacks and divisive rhetoric.

At this hopeful but anxious time in our country’s history, we need real experience, practical solutions, and a plan. We need Diane Harkey for Congress, 49th District.

ith The Right Stuff (1983) and Apollo 13 (1995) setting the standard for perfect biopics on the U.S. space program, the pressure to live up to that high quality must be intimidating. If anyone in modern Hollywood has the credit and chops to take on the challenge, it might be Damien Chazelle with First Man. He won Best Director at the Oscars two years ago for the musical La La Land, and before that received high praise for another musicoriented feature, Whiplash (2014). A bio-drama on real-life astronaut Neil Armstrong might not seem like an obvious follow-up, but it works.

In 1961, NASA engineer Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) is committed to helping the U.S. beat the Soviets at groundbreaking exploration in outer space. He is chosen to be the pilot of the Gemini 8 and Apollo 11 missions not long after the tragic death of his 2-year-old daughter, Karen. For the next eight years, we see Armstrong face the dangers and setbacks of getting the spaceships off the ground and onto the moon.

Corey Stoll co-stars as fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin and Claire Foy is Neil’s wife, Janet, who tries to reel him in and not forget about his family on earth. First Man reunites Chazelle, Gosling and composer Justin Hurwitz after La La Land for some breathtaking 16mm and 70mm cinematography.

While The Right Stuff was exciting and Apollo 13 thrilling, the tone of Chazelle’s movie is surprisingly somber. The filmmakers remind us that while we made history, it was at the cost of lives in previous attempts.

And, yes, the American flag is seen throughout the film. DP

Voyaging for Mother Earth Hikianalia Plans a Stop at Ocean Institute for Education on Sustainability

he crewmembers of the solar- and wind-powered voyaging canoe Hikianalia will be greeted with ceremonial dance and chanting once she makes her stop at Ocean Institute on Oct. 23 for a week-long stay.

The Alahula Kai o Maleka Hikianalia California Voyage is a continuation of the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s campaign to promote an environmentally and culturally enlightened world. The canoe departed Hawai’i in August and has since been making stops along the California coast. Hikianalia is the sister vessel of the famed Hokulea in Hawai’i. Hikianalia was launched in 2012 originally as an escort vessel. She’s now used as a classroom, helping her passengers explore marine resources and provide training for the next generation of voyagers. Each of her hulls includes electric motor power from onboard photovoltaic panels that convert sunlight to electric propulsive energy. Hikianalia has a zero carbon footprint in accordance with the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s mission to care for Mother Earth.

“We’re doing community outreach to help people understand the sustainability of the canoe. We share stories, exchange our traditional knowledge in order to approach complex modern issues,” Ellis said.

Through a ceremonial exchange, the crewmembers of the Hikianalia will ask permission from California’s indigenous groups to step onto their ancestral land and acknowledge kinship upon approaching the harbor. The welcoming event will begin Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. and feature members of the Acjachemen Nation and the Hula Halau Lani Ola engaging in dance and song. Dana Point city officials will also be in attendance.

“We all leave together and we all come back together. When we come into a community, we want to show our respect to the indigenous people of that community, to our

family members in the community and the overall community in general,” Ellis said.

On Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 27-28, the crew will offer public community canoe tours and outreach stations at the Ocean Institute from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Disney’s Moana will be shown throughout the day.

Season of Giving South Coast JV Dolphins donate car to coaches, raise money for charity while trying to build up Dana Point program

A

football team is a community. It’s a family.

When members of the family are in need, the community rallies to support them.

The South Coast JV Dolphins youth football team has rallied not once or twice but four times this season to bring aid to members of its football family. The Dolphins are also trying to rally their surrounding community to grow the program in the coming years.

The first bits of rallying came out of trying circumstances.

Each season, a “tackle jar” is passed around at games to the parents, and when the team scores or does something worth a cheer, the parents put a dollar or two into the jar. At season’s end, the money in the jar usually goes toward something for the kids.

However, instead of the money going towards some sort of treat or reward, the JV Dolphins are putting the money towards three higher causes.

All very recently, three families in the program lost three girls: one to a rare cancer, another to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and a third to epilepsy.

So the boys are coming together and will donate their “tackle jar” money to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation for Rhabdomyosarcoma, the SIDS Healing Hearts Foundation and the Epilepsy Support Group of Orange County.

Then on Wednesday, Oct. 17, the boys’ families came together to support two volunteer coaches that give so much time and effort to the kids.

Brothers Joshua Walker and Jacob Knox moved to south Orange County from St. Louis five years and one year ago, respectively. The brothers were without a car and would take the bus, catch rides and call Ubers to get everywhere including practices.

Knox is also going to school and playing basketball at Bethesda University in Anaheim. Knox would have to grab a 6 a.m. bus to get to an on-campus practice Dana Point Times October 19-25, 2018

at noon. He would then take classes and not be home until 8 p.m. Knox said he also worked overnights occasionally as well.

With the help of parents pitching in and a car available from one of the player’s 92-year-old great-grandmother, the team was able to purchase a car for Walker and Knox and surprised them with it at practice on Wednesday.

“Just gratitude, man,” Walker said. “I come out here because I just love the game. To get a gift for doing something I love, it’s just a privilege. Being from St. Louis, Missouri, me and my brother moved here, so this is our family. For them to do that just puts a cherry on top.”

Walker came to California to play football at Saddleback College. After his time at Saddleback, Walker was looking for a purpose and happened into coaching youth football while working at the Mission Viejo Mall.

“I was confused, and I said that morning, ‘God, tell me where I want to go. Tell me what you want me to do and I’ll do it,’” Walkers said. “A lady came in to our store, and she coaches through San Clemente and through different organizations. She was talking to me about coaching and she said, ‘If you want to ever coach with my team, come on down.’ I saw that as a sign. The other coach from the pee wee

team had just left, and it was like destiny, seriously.”

Walker has taken to coaching and loves the team he gets to work with.

“I left (playing) football and got here and found a greater love in coaching,” Walker said. “You move boys past little small things and change them into men.

It’s just unbelievable, man.”

Coach Terri Anderson, along with Walker and Knox, are part of an improving JV Dolphins team that is trying to grow the program as a feeder team for Dana Hills High School like those in San Clemente and Mission Viejo.

Two years ago, Jason Allemann, former principal at Dana Hills, and Adam Boskovich fought to have that feeder team. They don’t envision having the numbers to form their own group completely away from South Coast Youth Football San Clemente, but they are trying to build at least three levels of teams. With three teams, they would be able to host games at Dana Hills High School instead of playing their games in San Clemente.

Those at the helm of the JV Dolphins believe part of the problem is awareness with the SCYF name being attached to San Clemente and many kids that will eventually play football at Dana Hills that live in Laguna Niguel choose to play in

the Saddleback Valley football system with other kids that move on to play at Aliso Niguel, Mission Viejo, Laguna Hills and El Toro High Schools among others.

“Dana is in a great city,” Walker said, “but a lot of powerhouse football teams are around. So it’s hard for them to gain traction, but I’ve committed to the youth. Get the youth right and push them through Dana and let’s hope things go right.”

But the group is on their way.

The JV Dolphins are 5-3 this season after only one win a season ago and none the year before. The Dolphins won their first playoff game at La Habra on Monday, Oct. 15 and travel to Lakewood on Saturday, Oct. 20 to keep this roll going.

“Everybody wants to win, but they don’t see the hard work that goes into winning,” Walker said. “To have them win, it just pays off everything. It shows me what we’re doing changes the kids and its’s an impact. It gives joy.”

All in all, the Dolphins football family is putting its best foot forward. They are giving and winning and hope to see all their good deeds pay off with faith in the right places.

“We truly know we have someone that’s not our own blood,” Knox said. “Just to have the family, the community behind us.

veryone expected big things from 20-year-old Griffin Colapinto when he qualified for the WSL Championship Tour last year, but nobody could have expected he’d enjoy so much success so quickly. In his first contest as a full-time World Tour competitor, he finished third in pumping surf at Kirra on the Gold Coast of Australia. He followed that up with a second-place finish at the U.S. Open over the summer and is currently ranked 17th in the world. We caught up with him between travels to see how things are going this year and what it means to carry the torch for San Clemente.

Dana Point Times (DPT): Is it going as well as expected?

Griffin Colapinto (GC): “I didn’t really

come into this year with any expectations, so I think that’s always a good mindset to have. It’s kind of going how I thought it would go: get a couple good results and then have a few events that were a little bit harder to figure out. I just have to learn about them. I’m not expecting to be going for a world title or anything this year. All’s good.”

DPT: What’s come at you this year that you didn’t expect?

GC: “I thought I was going to do better

in Tahiti. I thought it would have been a good spot for me just because… I like to surf big waves, and if it was big I thought I would do well. But it was small and pretty grindy. It’s really hard to figure out the lineup when it’s that size. Everyone says that it’s the hardest size to surf because it’s so unpredictable. I think I need to figure that out a lot. All the other spots, I think (with) a few more surfs, and I’d be able to figure it out.”

DPT: What about pressure? Did you feel any pressure to start the year?

GC: No, I didn’t really feel much pressure.

I guess the most pressure I’ve felt was before Bali, when I made the quarterfinals.

At home I was kind of tripping, but then I kind of figured some things out mentally, went over there and had a bunch of fun, made the quarters and that just relieved a Dana Point Times October 19-25, 2018

lot of pressure. It put me in a good position in the rankings. From there it was off to J-Bay (South Africa). I got ninth there, and after that I really felt free. I’m backed up on the QS really well, so now it’s just (to) keep on bettering things.”

DPT: And when you went down to J-Bay, your dad came with you. How special was that to have him there?

GC: “It was awesome. He’s always look-

ing at the bright side, so he’s always good to travel with. If anything goes wrong, it’s nice to have him there as backup, to help out. He’s always psyched to help.

He’s put so much work into me over the years just to get me to the point where I can do the professional surfing thing.

He was down at the beach filming for so many hours, a countless amount of hours.

So he probably feels pretty good about it, too, like an accomplishment for him. It’s pretty cool.”

DPT: And your brother, Crosby, he’s ripping, too.

GC: “Yeah, he won that Cabo event, then

he won the U.S. Championships, so he’s on fire. He’s got more of that Joel Parkinson- or Jordy Smith-type build, where I’ve got more of a Julian Wilson build. It’s nice that we have different styles so that

people can look differently at us a little bit. It’s not like we’re just one person.”

t’s been a few weeks since we’ve logged a proper NSSA update, but after last weekend, Jett Schilling is definitely deserving of some ink.

Heading down the coast to north San Diego County, he jumped all over prime autumn conditions at Seaside Reef. With a shoulder- to head-high combo swell offering up all kinds of scoring opportunities, Schilling went the distance in both the men’s and junior divisions.

Catching fire in in the men’s final, he earned himself a perfect 10-point score on one wave, then backed it up with an impressive 8.83 for a total heat score of 18.83 out of a possible 20. In the junior final, he had to settle for more pedestrian wave scores of an 8.33 and a 6.77 to take the win.

Schilling’s been on a bit of a hot streak as of late. Last month, he competed in a unique, wave pool contest in Waco, Texas. Hosted by Stab Magazine, it featured a number of the best aerial surfers in the world. Schilling was right there in the mix, and while he didn’t win, on Instagram he called it “by far the most fun I’ve ever had at a surf contest.”

Lining up next, the North Shore season in Hawaii is right around the corner, and with his sponsor, Vans, hosting the prestigious Triple Crown, he’ll soon be hopping across the pond this winter. DP

DPT: What about your surf crew in San Clemente? When you’re in town, who are you hanging with?

GC: “I’m with my friend and (filmmaker)

Jacob Vanderwork pretty much every day. He’s either filming us or he’s surfing with us, depending on how the waves are.

I surf a lot with Crosby and his friends: Kade Matson, Cole Houshmand and Jett Schilling, those kids. They’re all super cool and fun to hang out with, so I’ll surf with them if they’re around. And then Brother (Kolohe Andino), of course, as well as Ian Crane. That’s pretty much it right there.”

DPT: How about the younger kids, any of them catch your eye?

GC: “It’s pretty crazy. These kids coming

up are, seriously, they’re the best kids in the world, and they all live in San Clemente. I feel like I haven’t seen many other kids from other countries doing what they’re doing. It’s crazy watching them all surf Lowers together and push each other so much. There are actually these two younger kids coming up, Cannon Carr and Makai Bray. They’re going to be gnarly. It’s heavy.” DP
