DHHS Special Needs Department Burglarized; OCSD Deputies and City of Dana Point Show Support THE LATEST: Recently, more than 20 Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) deputies, investigators and resource officers from Dana Point Police Services and beyond hosted an ice cream party for the special education department at Dana Hills High School (DHHS.) The party was initially instigated by Deputy D. Tildwell as an event to show support for the department after they were burglarized and vandalized by a group of five or more current and former students.

Just after midnight the morning of Aug. 26, at least five current and possibly former students entered DHHS. They proceeded to vandalize the special education department; drawing illicit images on the dry-erase boards in permanent marker, and stealing a variety of items including gift cards used by the students when off school grounds to teach and help them learn important life skills like spending and knowing their financial balances.

“It appears as if they may have specifically targeted the special education hall,” Tildwell said.

Tildwell, who is the DHHS OCSD School Resource Officer, immediately took action. She began rallying her fellow OCSD Dana Point deputies. She asked her fellow deputies to pitch in to raise funds and allocate resources to assist replacing what had been taken.

Enter Assistant City Manager Mike Killebrew.

“I saw Mike at City Hall and we were talking and I explained what I was doing.

He said ‘Wait. The deputies are doing this?’”Tildwell recalled. “No way. Good idea, but we’re picking up the bill for this.”

So on Sept. 13, Killebrew and the various contingents of OCSD arrived at DHHS with a car loaded down with gallons of ice-cream and all the fixings. More than 20 OCSD members entertained close to 50 DHHS special education students.

“We wanted to give back,” Tildwell said. “This is a community service job.

and that they can come to us.”

Tildwell said at the end-of-the-day, most of the students were more interested in the officers and their motorcycles than the ice cream.

Historical Society Recognizes Death of Rodney Howorth, 1940-2018 THE LATEST: On Oct. 2 a newsletter from the Dana Point Historical Society formally recognized the death of longtime member and Board of Directors member Rodney Howorth. Rod passed away on August 1 after a long illness. Rod was a member of the Board of Directors of the Historical Society for the last 14 years. He served as Secretary, as Publicity and Public Relations Chair, as Committee Chair for the Baby Beach Tile Wall Project and most recently as Chair of merchandise sales. An article written about Rod a few years ago in the Historical Society Newsletter was titled, “If You Need Something Done, Ask a Busy Man.” “Rod was also a pillar of our community with his work as President of the Lantern Village Association, in which capacity he worked for the improvement of the historic core area of Dana Point,” the newsletter stated. “He also contributed as a board member of the Dana Point Civic Association, the group that brings us the monthly “Coffee Chat” meetings. Rod was a member of the committee that brought

back the Festival of Whales Parade in 2002 and participated in city government as Chairman of the Dana Point Traffic Improvement Subcommittee. The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce chose Rod as their 2008 Citizen of the Year.

Ocean Institute raises $70,000 to Match State Grant for Tall Ship Spirit of Dana Point Engine Replacement THE LATEST: The Spirit of Dana Point, now called just “Spirit,” will receive a new engine as a result of a recent fundraising campaign that has now surpassed its goal.

Last June, the Ocean Institute received notification that it was a successful applicant for a highly competitive grant from the California Cultural and Historical Endowment. The grant for $68,745 was exactly half of the cost to replace the ship’s tired engine. A fundraising drive was immediately launched to raise the necessary matching funds for the ship to enter the shipyard, complete the work, and return to service as an ocean classroom.

“We are so thankful and humbled by the donors who stepped forward with surprisingly generous contributions to make this happen without delay. We received calls from people committing $5,000, $10,000 and $25,000 gifts, and we quickly realized how much Spirit means to so many people,” declared Dan Pingaro, Chief Executive Officer of the Ocean Institute.

THE LATEST: On Monday, Oct. 2, the City of Dana Point held an educational session for businesses regarding best practices involving interacting with a rising homeless community in Dana Point.

Approximately 50 residents and businesses were there to listen to a panel of speakers representing different parts of the city speak on what the city calls “responsible compassion.” Speakers included Public Works Director Matt Sinacori, OCSD Dana Point Police Services Volunteer Services Coordinator Jill Jackson, OCSD Homeless Liaison Officer Deputy C. Eiben and John Begin, minister of Homeless Initiative for Trellis.

WHAT’S NEXT: At City Council on Oct. 2, Councilmember Debra Lewis commended Economic Development Manager Kelly Reenders and her staff, as well as Matt Sinacori, for their continued efforts educating the public on homeless best practices. —DR

Van Careens off Cove Road, 9 Children Injured THE LATEST: At approximately 4 p.m. on Sept. 3, a van traveling at significant speed down Cove Rd. towards Dana Point Harbor, went off the road and crossed Harbor Drive before colliding with a eucalyptus tree.

Nine children were injured with fourof-the-nine being rushed to area trauma centers. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured and remained at the scene to be questioned by Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) deputies.

It is believed that the children, all under the age of 12, were affiliated with a yetto-be-determined youth activities group.

The investigation will be overseen by the OCSD Major Accident Reconstruction team.

Ritz-Carlton Announces Holiday Event Dates The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel has kicked off its holiday season by announcing its 8th Annual Surfing Santa and Standup Paddle Board Competition at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point on Nov. 17 and 18, 2018, followed by the 11th Annual Holiday Surfboard Auction from Nov. 17 until Dec. 31, 2018. Both seasonal events fully benefit Surfers Healing, a non-profit whose mission is to provide children with autism the gift of surfing.

“Our inspiration for the Surfing Santa Competition and Holiday Surfboard Auction began with the locally-based charity Surfers Healing and finding a way to make an impactful difference in the lives of children with autism and our community,” says Bruce Brainerd, General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel.

The Surfing Santa and Standup Paddle Board Competition is a two-day event where contestants dress as Santa or other holiday-inspired characters and battle it out in the waves. The contest features 11 divisions, inclusive of surf and stand up paddle board and is available for both children and adult contestants. Each heat will extend prizes for first place to sixth place winners, and all participants are eligible for a $1,500 Big Air prize, based on contestable air points throughout the day; a $500 First Place Costume prize; a $200 Second Place Costume prize; and a $125 Fastest Standup Paddle Board prize.

The Holiday Surfboard Auction from Saturday, November 17 to Monday, December 31 showcases a selection of hand-painted surfboards from various artists that are displayed at the resort and auctioned off to benefit Surfers Healing. Brawner Boards, Hobie, Album, Ellis, and Firewire are also contributing boards in support of the cause.

In 2008, the Surfboard Auction raised more than $13,000. Two years later, the resort hosted the first Surfing Santa Competition.

Since then, the property has raised nearly $350,000 for Surfers Healing.

SeaFest to Highlight Annual Clam Chowder Cook-Off The San Clemente Chamber of Commerce will host the 31st Annual Seafest, where clam chowder enthusiasts can sample and vote in a cook-off competition at the San Clemente Pier on Sunday, Oct. 7.

Chamber officials expect about 10 teams to participate before two sets of judges, one made up of an organized panel and the other representing the people’s choice that consists of eventgoers.

The teams are split into two categories, local restaurants and individuals. The individual division is comprised of the general public, local businesses, nonprofit organizations and Camp Pendleton.

Each team is required to cook a minimum of 25 gallons of soup and can choose between preparing the two types of chowders. The New England chowder is a cream-based broth that has potatoes and bacon bits, whereas the Manhattan style chowder traditionally has vegetables and a tomato broth base.

“This is my first time entering in the Seafest,” said David Henninger, chef of Antoine’s Café, a restaurant that won an award at last year’s cook-off. “The keys to a successful chowder are fresh ingredients, a little creativ-

ity and trying not to do the same as everyone else.”

An additional judging category will include booth decorations that best describe the respective business or nonprofit, and points will be awarded for festive styles.

Lynn Wood, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, said past displays have featured “under-the-sea” decor, French and Hawaiian themes.

“This event is special to San Clemente because it showcases the nonprofits and the restaurants in the area while bringing people into the town,” Wood said. “It’s also great for families since we have an amateur surf contest and craft activities for kids.”

The 21st annual surf competition, hosted

by Catalyst surf shop, will have divisions ranging from 8 to 18 years old. Kids can also stay on land to compete in the hula-hoop contest, Costco diaper derby, Rocket Fizz Soda Pop & Candy shop bubblegum blowing contest, jump rope and tortilla- toss contest.

Seafest includes handcrafted goods exhibited by artists from Southern California and a business exposition.

In addition to offering chowder, last year’s winner, Fisherman’s Restaurant and Bar, will be barbecuing Maine lobster with rice pilaf and coleslaw for purchase on the beach.

2018 City Council Election Coverage DANA POINT TIMES

eading up to the Dana Point City Council election on Nov. 6, the Dana Point Times is publishing six questions, one each week, that we’ve asked each individual who qualified for the ballot. WEEK 5

Describe your perspective on large-scale commercial and residential development in Dana Point?

DISTRICT 1

JOE MULLER We don’t have opportunities for large scale commercial or residential development. All new development will be infill. However, I am concerned about the empty lots in our community and the lost revenue they represent. We need to focus on ways we can attract new restaurants and shops for our residents to enjoy. In recent months our resorts have been attracting celebrity chefs to operate the restaurants in their hotels. We should be looking to do the same in our commercial districts.

JOSEPH “JOE” JAEGER We need to put residents first. We also need to maintain the character of our city. I do support responsible commercial and residential development, but I will not support development that negatively impacts the quality of life of our residents.

AMY FOELL Dana Point is on track for another exciting growth spurt.

However, we must ensure that all development is sustainable development. A balance between the economic value of development and the maintenance of our notable landscape, precious natural resources and dynamic coastal ecosystem is vital. I’d prefer the building of distinctive structures that enhance Dana Point’s singular aesthetic versus typical readymade designs with materials found in any American city.

DISTRICT 2

MARK L. MCGINN Dana Point is currently in the middle of a large downtown construction project. While it is important to revitalize and rejuvenate our city, we must honor and enforce building codes that maintain the charm and attraction of our city. I believe our residents deserve a City Council that respects code while promoting development.

J. SCOTT SCHOEFFEL The Lantern District Specific Plan, fashioned over many years with citizen input, fosters modern coastal village development. Any development under that plan must be of the highest quality, offering amenities and services our residents crave without altering our city’s character. In short, development that elegantly complements our seven square miles of paradise. Many of California’s most enviable coastal towns use this approach to great success, working with far less than we have in Dana Point.

RICHARD A. VICZOREK Dana Point is geographically small and basically a builtout community. This leaves little likelihood of large-scale projects in our town. However, we do have opportunities for development and I am often asked why we have vacant lots in town. The City needs to examine what the causes may be and if we are missing out on economic growth for our citizens and the revenue it would generate for the City.

Any proposed development must start with a “residents first” approach, and ask what benefit it brings to our community. Afterward, we need to balance that benefit against the negative impacts, such as increased traffic, parking, over-congestion, and overcrowding. I enjoy visiting Newport and Laguna Beach, but my wife and I chose to make a life in Dana Point because we love its unique, small-town feel. I will work to protect that. A common-sense approach is necessary to balance each individual’s right to the enjoyment of their property. Short term rental owners need to ensure they don’t create a public nuisance or destroy the character of a neighborhood while they exercise their right to rent property. We should have a city STR policy to ensure they’re operated correctly with proper city oversight. STRs can be good neighbors while contributing to our city’s economy and revenue.

Sowing Nostalgia

R

ecently I spent an afternoon in our harbor swapping memories with a fellow lifelong Dana Point resident and boater. As we explored our shared history in this town, in this harbor, naturally we succumbed to the bittersweet lure of nostalgia. There’s a subtle melancholy at the root of all the joyous recollections of our past. But even more, there’s a sense of pride, almost a badge of honor, to recall and share experiences of places and things that no longer exist in our home town. The Dana Villa Motel, or Papa Pio’s restaurant.

Buying a board from Hobie himself at his original shop. The vast, empty west marina before the docks were built. Renting roller skates at Dana Wharf and cruising the harbor like a 1970s disco star. And, before my time, surfing the great Killer Dana break.

Nostalgia demands change; it can’t exist without it. Yet, often we fight change.

Change disrupts our comfort. It discards our routines. Change requires adaptation.

Adaptation is work. Ugh, work.

Dana Point Harbor is on the brink of massive change. Our entire boat marina will be replaced, as will the hotel and many of our shops and restaurants. Hardly a corner of our harbor will be left unchanged.

How we experience our harbor today will be cast to the past, replaced by a new vision designed for the next generation and beyond. This is a frightening prospect for so many of us old-timers who center our lives in this harbor.

I am a current Dana Point City Councilmember, and former Mayor of our City.

Since I am not running for reelection, my time on the City Council will only last a few short weeks, but I feel it is necessary to address an issue that has become one of the key issues in our current election cycle.

As many of you may have noticed, my comments to the media to date have been far and few between, if not almost non-existent.

I prefer to voice my thoughts, feelings and comments about our city in a public and open forum. Before my time on the Council is over, and notwithstanding my typical

This is paradise. It’s almost embarrassing how good we have it in Dana Point Harbor. Standing in defense against changing it is instinctive. Why risk ruining a great thing? It’s a matter that’s been debated in our community since Harbor Revitalization was first announced in 1997. I’m nervous about it. Yet, I convince myself we’re on the right path partly on the expectation that we will be archiving so many great memories for tomorrow’s tales of the good ol’ days. New badges of honor for those of us here today.

Thirty years from now, when my boys are my age, perhaps they will spend an afternoon in the harbor swapping memories with friends, or describing to their kids what our town was like when they grew up. I will listen in with pride, and a touch of melancholy. Then I will reach into my vault and withdraw tales of roller skating through our harbor in 1978 like a disco king. I’ll show them!

Over the 20-year evolution of the Harbor Revitalization Plan, this project has encountered plenty of opposition, and certainly the motives of the opponents vary. However, the most common argument against reinventing our harbor is resistance to change.

Dana Point Harbor is wonderful the way it is.

Why change it? Let’s set aside for a moment the fact that our marinas and buildings are far beyond their planned life expectancy and are in a OUR HOME PORT state of disrepair out of

Harbor renovation, done properly, with faith to our community’s established character and charm, in honor of its history, can inspire renewed affection for our harbor, regenerate our enthusiasm and provide new experiences. Perhaps equally important, renovating our harbor will seize what it is today and deposit a nostalgic moment into the vaults of our shared memories. An investment that will gain value over time, with a currency shared in a bond among those of us here today, and passed along as fond tales to those that follow.

decision to avoid commenting in the media, I feel it is necessary to address the inaccurate facts and statements that have been circulating in connection with one of the key issues in our current election cycle.

Specifically, I want to set the record straight on what actually has occurred with the Financial Review Committee (FRC). I became concerned about the committee when two members suggested that the city was in dire financial straits for purely political motives. They spent enormous amounts of staff time trying to substantiate these assertions. However, the remaining members of the FRC concluded these assertions were absolutely incorrect. In short, the two members of the FRC who were politicizing the city’s financial situation with false information, were refuted in their own committee. Hence their position was never formally reported to the Council.

Unfortunately, the fact their committee did not agree with them did not deter these two members from their political goal. True to

form, they continued to politicize the issue by appearing at City Council meetings and making their inaccurate assertions during public comment.

Unfortunately, there was a quorum of the FRC committee at the Council meetings where this occurred. It was unclear to me if this would constitute a Brown Act violation. The City Attorney expressed concern over this issue, but Council allowed the public comment to be made after one FRC member left the room so a quorum would not be present. The two members attempted this again at the very next meeting. I thereby exited the room, soon after to be followed by three other councilmembers, so that I would not be party to the violation.

In light of this unusual circumstance, the City Attorney submitted a request to the Orange County District Attorney (DA) for an opinion regarding the possible Brown Act violation. Shortly thereafter the Council, on my motion, suspended the FRC meetings

SOAPBOX until a future date after its charter was updated.

In addition, the Council directed that the FRC’s charter be amended, since they had delivered nothing the Council had requested, including the waste, fraud and abuse a watchdog committee is tasked with uncovering.

While working on revisions to the FRC’s charter and waiting for the DA opinion, two members were removed: Debra Lewis removed Joseph Jaeger and Paul Wyatt removed Buck Hill (the emails confirming their removal are a matter of public record and available upon request). Mr. Hill and Mr. Jaeger now claim they were fired – they were, but by their appointing Councilmembers not the Council as a whole. In the meantime, the DA opinion came in.

The DA determined the FRC member’s actions were a Brown Act violation. The DA didn’t stop there. He went on to suggest their actions may have been criminal, specifically stating “ if the members of the committee are attempting to circumvent the provisions of the Brown Act by intentionally depriving the public of notice that an issue is to be discussed and preventing interested members of the public from commenting on the matter being discussed. This could potentially subject the participants in such a scheme to criminal liability in accordance with the criminal provisions of the Brown Act.” ( The DA’s

opinion is a matter of Public Record and available upon request.)

The Council is only interested in maintaining the city’s integrity. I predict, that in the near future you will see the FRC back – but under a new charter, and with a clear direction to abstain from taking actions that violate the Brown Act. This is all a matter of public record, but with all of the misinformation circulating on social media I thought it important to make sure the facts were presented so the public could form their own opinions with correct information.

A CITY COUNCIL REPRESENTING THE FEW MICHAEL FROST, Dana Point

Neighbors, as you go through the issues and distinguish between the candidates on budgets, safety, development, property rights and special interests, these safe political answers you read are often inaccurate.

I believe this city election is about creating a fair and balanced City Council, with checks and balances to eliminate decisions benefitting special interests or groups focused solely on one area of the city.

A slate of candidates is being heavily

supported by two special interest groups.

One is Capo Cares, who recently on Aug. 26 emailed their election strategy. The first issue is, I believe this campaign strategy insinuates sway or special representation from Debra Lewis and Paul Wyatt.

I forget, weren’t Councilmembers Wyatt and Lewis elected in a general election to represent the entire community?

The second issue I have is with the concept of prioritizing their own interests over districts having elections this year. Welcome to the slate of candidates Jeager, Payne and McGinn. Why not allow each district to define their own priorities? What sort of power is derived by not allowing each district to decide on their best representative?

I am afraid of any stacked council willing to make decisions to back this or any political group. District representatives should represent their residents’ priorities, and then have the flexibility to work with other councilmembers to create a great overall community.

The other special interest backing this slate of candidates is “Residents Who Care About Dana Point”. This PAC was primarily funded by Headlands Reserve LLC to pay an outside firm for signatures to not allow residents to rent out their own properties. Coincidentally, after this payment,

the developer pushed through a hotel up on the residential street of Green Lantern with little fanfare. Why did this group, originally concerned with maintaining a residential atmosphere, not participate in questioning 350 hotel rooms on Green Lantern? Look at the financing for this Political Group, you will see a great example of inconsistency in policy and how special interest funding quickly guides decisions.

Why would we elect a slate of candidates that further promotes decision making based upon who has funded certain political PACs? We have a lot of qualified folks running to represent their neighbors and not special interests. Let’s make sure we elect a balanced City Council, so each area of our community has a fair shake.

At the Movies: French Filmmaker Takes on the West with ‘The Sisters Brothers’

oaquin Phoenix, John C. Reilly and Jake Gyllenhaal are three of the most interesting names in independent cinema. Jacques Audiard is an acclaimed French filmmaker of dramas like A Prophet (2009) and Rust and Bone (2012), who has made a surprising choice for his first American production. Along with English-Pakistani character actor Riz Ahmed, all five men come together for the Wild West satire The Sisters Brothers.

In 1851 Oregon, brothers Eli and Charlie Sisters (Reilly and Phoenix) are the most notorious hitmen in the west. Their latest assignment is to go to San Francisco to kill chemist Herman Kermit Warm (Ahmed) and steal his “miracle formula” that spots California gold for their boss. John Morris (Gyllenhaal) is hired by the brothers to track down Warm’s whereabouts.

The Sisters Brothers is adapted by Audiard and Thomas Bidegain from Patrick DeWitt’s 2011 novel. For a writer-director who usually takes on some serious, contemporary themes, a western may appear as an odd U.S.

debut. Granted, The Sisters Brothers isn’t particularly lighthearted and the third act takes a definitely grim turn.

But Phoenix, of all the actors, has the character with the most comic relief, which is a different take for the star, and it’s fun for fans to see him be a little loose on screen. Oddly enough, Gyllenhaal is the weakest link here, with his delivery being just a bit off.

But one amusing, meta-gag is when Ahmed’s character introduces himself to Gyllenhaal’s character after the actors appeared together in Nightcrawler four years ago. DP

Football for a Buck: The Crazy Rise and Crazier Demise of the USFL

W

hat better way to celebrate another football season than with Jeff Pearlman’s new book, Football for a Buck: The Crazy Rise and Crazier Demise of the USFL. This book looks back at a league that might have succeeded had it not been for Donald J. Trump, who owned the New Jersey Generals. Pearlman points out that Trump’s crazy ideas included expansion from 12 to 18 teams, changing from spring to fall (which meant competing directly with the NFL), and suing the NFL for violating the Sherman Antitrust Act. Despite the sad ending, Pearlman does a great job of bringing back some colorful moments from a league that at times could be very entertaining.

The book is a straight-forward, chronological look at the United States Football League, peppered with great anecdotes and colorful characters. Additionally, Pearlman’s love of this subject matter

shines through every page of the book.

How many times did a team fail to not only pay the players, but not pay the airline? In one instance a team could not leave the gate after boarding because the pilot wanted to be paid and in cash!

There was also the time a player broke his thumb, but had to wait a few days to be treated because the free clinic across the street was only open on weekends.

However, it wasn’t all gloom. The Tampa Bay Bandits, under owner John Bassett, averaged better than 40,000 in attendance one season and even turned a profit. The Philadelphia Stars appeared in all three league title games, losing by two points the first year and winning the last two. Pearlman also tells the story of Albert C. Lynch who conned his way into a contract with the Chicago Blitz. After trying out with the Blitz, BOOK TALK he realized that all the

Despite a 5.7 time in the 40-yard dash, Lynch went to the stands and was signed on the spot by head coach George Allen. The coaches had a good laugh when they figured out they had been duped by a guy that could never play a down of pro football.

One recurring problem that the league faced was not vetting the owners well enough. Several owners clearly overstated their worth, like Bill Oldenburg of the Los Angeles Express. Long before the USFL knew Oldenburg, who claimed he was worth more than $100 million, the FBI knew him as a con man and was already onto him.

Through all the zaniness, Pearlman points out the league might have survived had the owners not followed Trump’s advice.

Dana Wharf Fish Count Bonito still coming in with fall fishing on horizon

T

he water temperature is starting to fall, but fishing is still on the rise at Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said that the shift from summer to fall was evident with water temperatures down to 67-69 degrees. However, the fleet continued to see good fishing, including a great week for bonito.

Anglers used multiple techniques and setups, but they were all working on the schools of bonito. The bonito were coming

in at four to eight pounds with live bait getting the best bites. Skipjack was also a big find on the bonito trips.

The cooler water brought in some sheephead catches along with rockfish and fair bass fishing, Woolley said.

The all-day and overnight trips had shots at yellowtail and bluefin along with the bonito the other trips were grabbing.

Dana Hills lost both matches in four sets to Aliso Niguel, ranked No. 15 in the CIF-SS Division 1 and 2 combined poll, and dropped their first match to league champion San Juan Hills, ranked No. 8, in five sets at home.

Dana Hills has one regular-season match remaining as they travel to San Juan Hills on Oct. 9.

The Dolphins will look to snap the Stallions’ 26-match league winning streak before the playoffs begin on Oct. 16 or 18.

Girls Tennis Undefeated in League Dana Hills girls tennis sits in first place after the first half of South Coast League play without a blemish on their league record.

The Dolphins (9-5, 4-0) lost their last three matches of the nonleague portion of their schedule, but Dana Hills has rebounded to a four-game league streak.

Dana Hills bookended the first half of its league campaign with two tight matches against rivals San Clemente, 10-8 on Sept. 20, and Aliso Niguel, 10-8 on Oct. 2. The Dolphins scored big victories over Tesoro, 14-4 on Sept. 25, and Capistrano Valley, 13-5 on Sept. 27.

Girls Volleyball Locked into Third, Playoff Spot The first season back in the South Coast League has been a battle for Dana Hills.

With one match to play, the Dolphins (25-5, 4-3) are locked into third place in

the league, which will be good enough for a playoff spot in CIF-SS Division 2.

Dana Hills has cleaned house with lastplace El Toro. The Dolphins scored two sweeps over the Chargers, including their latest league match on Oct. 3. Dana Hills has also taken down fourth-place Trabuco Hills in both matches, in a home sweep and a five-set road match.

Trabuco Hills (1-6, 0-1) is in its first season back in the Sea View League, and like the Dolphins, the Mustangs have had a rough go, which means Dana Hills could be primed for a league win.

Trabuco Hills has lost its last four games and allowed 56 points or more in each of those games. Those have the makings for the kind of jolt the Dana Hills offense needs.

Time to Bust Out Your Paddle 2018 Pacific Paddle Games are coming to Doheny State Beach this weekend

he sun has hardly set on the Ohana Fest, and it’s time for another weekend of good times and fun in the sun down at Doheny State Beach.

This weekend, the Pacific Paddle Games are coming to Dana Point, and there’s something for everyone—even if you don’t reckon yourself a racer. The cornerstone of the weekend is the proclass races, but there are also equipment

demos, a fitness zone, good eats and drinks, and all kinds of other family-friendly activities throughout the weekend.

“I always love going back to Dana Point each year for the PPGs—the best of the best are there and the conditions are fairly unpredictable, so you never know what you may get on the day,” Australian power paddler Michael Booth recently told SUP Magazine. “A tip is to not let yourself get over-awed by the situation and just focus

on yourself and what you can control.

Just go out there, do your best, and most importantly, enjoy it!”

In terms of racing, there are three basic categories at the Pacific Paddle Games: technical, distance and pro. The technical category makes the most of the iconic setup at Doheny. Featuring laps in and out of the surf and around marker buoys, these races require athletes to not just be able to paddle fast but also negotiate their boards in the surf, as well as maneuver them in a crowd of other racers.

The pro-distance race is a 6-mile race that will consist of two 3-mile laps outside of the surf. There’s also a 3-mile race for the open and recreational racers. The pro division is where the big money and heavy-hitting athletes are. Pro racers are required to compete in both the technical and distance races.

When it comes to who’s eligible to compete, there are divisions for pro men and women, pro junior boys and girls, open men and women, open junior boys and girls, open grom boys and girls, as well as a prone division.

In addition to established stand-up paddle racing rules, there are a few details that every racer should be aware of heading into the weekend. All SUP distance racers are required to wear a Coast Guardapproved personal flotation device (PFD).

Leashes are required for all open competitors, and open youth technical racers will also need PFDs for their events. Additionally, to avoid any serious head injuries, officials are requiring that all youth race divisions wear helmets.

In terms of team relays, each team is comprised of four paddlers. At least one must be a female and one must be a junior (17 and under). To keep things fair, there

are only two pros allowed on any one team (a “pro” is considered anyone who competed in the pro men or pro women technical or distance races, as well as any junior who competed in either the pro men’s or pro women’s events).

In addition to all the serious racing that’s going to be going down, the Pacific Paddle Games fitness zone offers a great opportunity to get the body moving without all of the stress of competing. Featuring free yoga and exercise classes, all you have to do to get involved is check the daily schedule, pick a class you want to take and show up. You don’t need to RVSP or anything. Classes are being hosted by event sponsors Maui Jim, OrangeTheory Fitness, Club Pilates and Sea Vibes.

And for those who want to get out on the water and try something new, the demo zone is the place to be. Presented

by Salt Life, the highly successful demo zone is now in its fourth year. Open to everyone from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, it’s an epic chance for beginners or experts to try out the latest board and paddle designs. With a number of top brands participating, it’s also a good time to talk to the experts and tap into some of their knowledge. You’ll need a valid photo ID or credit card to register.

As of press time, Surfline.com is forecasting 3- to 4-foot surf in South Orange County for the weekend of Oct. 6-7. It looks like we’ll be getting our first real shot of west swell this fall, and it’s worth keeping an eye on what Tropical Storm Sergio does. That could also send some swell our way. The weather forecast is calling for clear skies and warm temps with some light winds out of the south. DP

he Pacific Paddle Games is big-time, even if you’re a small fry. While the pro paddlers garner the lion’s share of the attention, kids like Conrad Rojas take the racing just as serious, work just as hard and deserve just as much applause and respect.

A quintessential 13-year-old beach kid, he said he loves getting out on his stand-up paddleboard in Dana Point Harbor as much as he does ripping the inside peaks at T-Street.

“I just love to be in the water with my friends and have a good time,” Conrad told the San Clemente Times.

An eighth-grader at Shorecliffs Middle School in San Clemente, he’s already logged years of water time—especially with his old man, Rob, who’s an elite paddler himself.

“When I surf, I feel energized, free and calm. My dad is my inspiration. I love to surf with my dad,” Conrad said. “I look up to him in surfing. He has shown me how to surf and guides me.”

not studying or soaking in the local waters?

“I love to travel to different places around the world…to different surf spots,” said Conrad, keeping the dream alive.
