OCSD Dana Point Announces Death of K9 Deputy “Shadow” THE LATEST: On Sept. 17, Orange County Sheriff’s Department Dana Point Police Services announced the death of their K9 dog deputy known by the name of Shadow.

A post on social media reported Shadow and his partner Deputy L. Costa were assigned to custody operations and assisted in discovering illegal narcotics inside the jail facilities. Shadow was also FEMA certified in Search and Rescue. Shadow worked from the summer of 2006 through 2010.

Rare ETP Orcas Seen in Record Numbers Off Coast of Dana Point THE LATEST: Rare orca whales known as the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) population, were seen off the coast of Dana Point in record numbers this past week.

Steve Burkhalter, a boat captain for Dana Wharf Whale Watching & Sportfishing, said that Orange County boaters were notified when the small pod of 8-10 orcas was seen traveling north through San Diego waters.

Burkhalter reported tracking an imminent intersection of a pod of common dolphin and the northbound orcas. The orcas began to feed on the dolphins, boils appearing from their attacks and orcas breaching directly over the side of the Dana Pride.

“I have only seen them once before,” Burkhalter said. “For them to be seen for this long is amazing. Every day I wonder if this is the last time I will see them.”

According to researcher Alisa Schulman-Janiger of the California Killer Whale Project, these orcas are part of the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) population found in the waters off Mexico.

“ETPs are very rarely encountered and little is known about them,” SchulmanJaniger said. “They are not part of the three recognized US west coast eco-types of killer whales which include residents, Dana Point Times September 21-27, 2018

Bigg’s (transients) and offshore orcas.”

According to www.seaworld.com, ETP orcas are currently considered a “potential” killer whale ecotype.

“We have never seen orcas hunt and kill dolphin like they did this past week, we have seen these ETP orcas over the years but never like this,” said Donna Kalez of Dana Wharf Whale Watching & Sportfishing.

VFW Dana Point Post #9934 Awarded National Outstanding Community Service Award THE LATEST: At the Dana Point City Council meeting on Sept. 18, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Dana Point Post #9934 was awarded the VFW National Outstanding Community Service Award.

Chapter Commander Wayne Yost accepted the award on behalf of his Dana Point post from Mayor Richard A. Viczorek and VFW National Council Member Earl Fulk-both of whom are also members of Post #9934.

In order to qualify for the National Outstanding Community Service Award, Post #9934 was deemed as: 100 percent reported in community activities,100 percent reported in hospital affairs, 100 percent reported in youth activities, 100 percent reported in drug and safety activities, having actively support and participate in Voice Of Democracy/Patriot Pen/Teacher of the Year programs, participated in the Buddy Poppy program, demonstrated an active involvement in the community, supported the Commander’s Special Project with donations and other criteria

as may be required by the department commander, “No post is on an island,” Fulk said.

“The City has fully backed this post and this award is as much theirs as the post’s.”

Bonnie Small Awarded 2018 Visionary Women Caregiver Award by Alzheimer’s Orange County THE LATEST: On Sept. 13, Dana Point resident Bonnie Small was honored with the 2018 Alzheimer’s Orange County Visionary Women Caregiver Award. Small was one of eight women recognized. Four of the women were private citizens caring for family or friends, two were professionals and one award was presented to a teenage brother and sister duo for their care of their grandmother.

The award, recognizing caregivers for their “exemplary commitment to compassionate care,” was awarded to Small for her care of her parents. Small’s mother was diagnosed 10-years ago with early onset dementia, her father three years ago at age 82. Small shared that her entire family network came together and that the care her parents are receiving is only possible because of their assistance.

“I am honored to receive this award, but it wouldn’t be possible without everyone around me that has supported me,”

WHAT’S NEXT: Small recognized that in each of the eight women recognized, there was a sense of humility and that they were not faced with any other options other than to care for their loved ones.

“Everyone seemed to feel that this is just what they should be doing,” Small explained. “What we had to do.”

“One of the greatest lessons my siblings and I have learned from this experience of caring for my parents is that we absolutely cannot control the disease or the impacts,” Small said. “We can only control if our mother and father are happy.” —DR

City Council Holds First Reading of Ordinance on Regulations for Home Brewing THE LATEST: In response to community interest and several inquiries associated with the new industry of home brewing of alcoholic beverages, the City of Dana Point Acting Director of Community Development Matt Schneider, and City staff held a first reading of the ordinances amending the zoning ordinances allowing for alcoholic beverage manufacturing to be established in the community. To develop these requirements, staff reviewed other cities which have successfully regulated and promoted these uses and created similar requirements for Dana Point.

Except for the Industrial/Business (I/B) zoning district where it is allowed by right, the use requires a Minor Conditional Use Permit to ensure appropriate conditions of approval are applied to ensure compatibility with surrounding uses.

The proposed use will not be permitted in mixed-use or residential zones.

In response to comments the staff received at the Planning Commission Study Session, staff updated the required parking requirement as well. The parking requirements are similar to other uses in the City, and consistent with restaurant parking requirements.

Senator Patricia Bates Awards City of Dana Point Resolution for California Surfing Day Prior to the Dana Point City Council meeting on Sept. 18, Senator Patricia Bates awarded the City of Dana Point a resolution in honor of California Surfing Day in Dana Point. Speaking to city staff and the council, Bates recited the long history of Dana Point’s relevance in surf history and recognized the importance of the city in its surfing’s now mainstream cultural presence.

City Council Approves October as National Arts & Humanities Month On Sept. 18, Dana Point City Council approved a recommended action from the Dana Point Arts and Culture Commission making October National Arts and Humanities Month.

“National Arts and Humanities Month is a coast to coast collective recognition of the importance of culture in America,” a City of Dana Point agenda report states.

The report also names the primary goals are to create national, state and local focus on the arts, to encourage individuals and organizations to participate in the arts, to provide an opportunity for businesses and government agencies to show their support of the arts and to raise public awareness about the role the arts and humanities play in communities and residents lives.

Trip Advisor Names Dana Point One of the 20 Best Fishing Cities in America In an article written to assist want-to-be fisherman figure out where to cast their line, Trip Advisor has recently named Dana Point one of the top-20 best places in America to go fishing. Three California coastal cities were present in the list as Dana Point was joined by San Diego and Catalina. The article specifically sources AllWater Charters & Boat Rentals services, but also shows reviews and recommendations for Dana Wharf Whale Watching and Sport Fishing, Dana Point Sport Fishing and Harbor Boat Rentals.

FEMA Emergency Test to Take Place Oct. 3 The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will conduct a nationwide EAS and WEA test on Oct. 3 to assess national warning capabilities. The test includes radio, television, cable stations and compatible cell phones. It will start around 11:18 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time. This will be the first nationwide WEA test, and it will use the Presidential Alerts category.

Sheckler Foundation Raises $380K for Children in Need Professional athletes, celebrities and more than 400 supporters came together in support of pro skateboarder Ryan Sheckler’s Gala and 11th Annual Golf Tournament on Sept. 9 and 10 at Monarch Beach Resort and Golf Links in Dana Point.

Golfers included professional athletes like NBA All-Star Klay Thompson, Football Hall of Famer Andre Reed and actor Cris Judd along with members of Linkin Park, Green Day, Of Mice and Men, and Avenged Sevenfold. A total of $380,000 was raised to benefit the Sheckler Foundation’s “Be the Change” initiative.

2018 City Council Election Coverage DANA POINT TIMES

eading up to the Dana Point City Council election on Nov. 6, the Dana Point Times is publishing six questions, one each week, that we’ve asked each individual who qualified for the ballot. Be sure to look for next week’s edition when we publish the fourth question. The list of candidates is published according to the random alphabet the California Secretary of State recently drew. DP

WEEK 3

Describe how you would balance representing your district as well as the residents of Dana Point at-large?

DISTRICT 1

JOE MULLER As I mentioned earlier, the residents of Dana Point have made a large investment and commitment to work and live in this community. It is imperative we protect that way of life. That being said, most issues in this city are universal.

Keeping our property values high, our taxes low, our streets safe, well maintained and clean are all vitally important. It is imperative the entire city enjoys these. Districts do not and cannot exist in a vacuum.

JOSEPH “JOE” JAEGER Our city’s population is only 34,000, and comprises an area of only 6.7 square miles. What affects us at one end or another affects us all. We have common interests and concerns, and we are strongest when we are united to solve those problems. I will, of course, make the interests of my district paramount, but to be successful I will need to find common ground and work with other district councilmembers.

AMY FOELL As an advocate for District 1 and a champion for our city, I will balance the specific needs of the district with the concerns of the city at-large through accessibility to all constituents, an open door policy, a strong awareness of the community’s needs and right action on the Council. Dana Point has roughly 34,000 people comparable to my previous constituency where I successfully served as Los Feliz Neighborhood Council, District B in Los Angeles.

DISTRICT 2

MARK L. MCGINN Districting is a new concept for Dana Point. Although I am only running within the confines of District 2, I feel obligated to represent the entire city. My primary focus will be on oversite of the city’s budget that currently spends more than it takes in. If not corrected, the city will exhaust its cash reserves. This is unacceptable and affects all Dana Point residents.

J. SCOTT SCHOEFFEL I served our city “at large” as a councilmember for eight years and Planning Commissioner for 12 years during its most formative time. I learned the best way to serve my district is by creating a great city. All ships rise with the tide.

That said, in District Two of Dana Hills, students and retirees walking dogs mingle in Sea Canyon Park. It is a special place with unique issues. That is why I never left.

RICHARD A. VICZOREK I view this role no differently than any experienced by a congressman, state senator, state assemblyman, or county supervisor, all of whom are elected by districts. Each representative is part of a larger body and must work together with the other representatives to achieve what is best for everyone. However, as a district representative, I will be uniquely capable of advocating any district-specific issues on behalf of my particular constituents.

My biggest concern about districting is that it will divide our city into small factions aligned against one another. I’ve found support for my campaign throughout our city because of my unifying “residents first” message, and my belief in a unified Dana Point.

District 3 is unique because it’s largely residential, home to Doheny Village and includes San Juan Creek. Residents’ concerns are similar throughout the entire city, however we are home to a disproportionate amount of homeless, panhandling and vagrancy.

The State of Surf Dana Point celebrates inaugural California Surfing Day

H

is nerves getting the best of him, Gerardo Zavaia, of San Juan Capistrano, stood frozen—his feet firmly planted in the sand.

No less than 10 minutes later, half-adozen men and women surrounded Zavaia in the shallow water, cheering as they pushed him into his first wave. World Surf League Championship Tour competitor Caio Ibelli anchored the board, ensuring its stability as the smiling Zavaia rushed toward the shore on the first ride of his young life.

On Sept. 19, Zavaia and many others rode their first waves thanks to the first annual California Surfing Day event in Dana Point featuring a unique surf session for boys and girls from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley. On that day, close to 50 boys and girls, ages 10-18, were picked up after school by the re-activated Dana Point trolley from the Boys & Girls Clubs location in San Juan Capistrano and taken to Doheny State Beach to experience an afternoon of riding the waves with volunteer surf instructors from the Dana Point Surf Club and Girl in the Curl.

“There is no better way to celebrate the sport of surfing and its rich history in Dana Point than to share its enjoyment with young people. This is a true community celebration,” said Dana Point City Manager Mark Denny in a press release from the city. Denny himself could be seen

in the water playing the role of “catcher,” stopping the novice surfers careening toward the rapidly approaching shoreline.

“This will be a very special day for our club members to understand and get more acquainted with the ocean environment that’s right in their backyard,” said James Littlejohn, executive director, Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley. “What better way to do that than spending a few hours learning to surf with some volunteer surfers! I really want to thank the Dana Point Surf Club, city of Dana Point, and Girl in the Curl, Boneyard Café and all the volunteers for making this possible for our members.”

“When the city approached us about doing something to recognize California Surfing Day, we knew it had to be special.

When we started, our club the goal wasn’t just to compete but to do good things in our community,” said Eric Diamond, executive committee chairman, Dana Point Surf Club in an announcement of the event. “This event really brings to life why we celebrate surfing, especially here in Dana Point. It’s going to benefit everyone. I know the kids will be stoked to get in the water but more than that, our surf club members will see how much of an impact they can have by sharing their love of surfing.”

Diamond said he hopes to make this an even bigger annual event in Dana Point.

Standing on the beach, taking in the slow, perfectly rolling waves of Doheny, full of shrieking, smiling “groms,” Dana Point Surf Club vice president, Hurley executive, former competitive surfer and Dana Point local Pat O’Connell stood on the beach taking it all in.

“I mean, that’s it really,” O’Connell said after watching Zavaia’s ride. Notorious for his outspoken positivity and expressive personality, O’Connell’s tone sounded earnest, heartfelt.

“That’s what it’s all about. I’m so proud of my people, my club, of Dana Point.” DP

ana Point, you make my heart sing. Twenty one years ago when I moved with my wife Bonnie and our baby daughter Meg to Dana Point, I looked forward to raising my family in this beautiful area. However, I had no idea at the time of the extent to which our community would guide us and support us as we grew up, pursued our dreams and navigated the times of our lives.

Early on, Bonnie taught me about service to others and engaging in the community.

She was a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) president at Malcom Elementary, Marco Forster Middle School and Dana Hills High School and had an absolute blast doing it.

Her PTA board members were her rock bands. She encouraged me to volunteer, play music in classrooms and get involved in the PTA Reflections art program.

This past year, Bonnie battled breast cancer. It is in remission and she still looks for ways to help other people every single day (see page 3). We were absolutely blown away by the support this community gave to our family and could never fully express how much it means to us, but it means the world. When we were down, you picked us

up and I will never forget that.

I love Dana Point so much and have always connected to it through music and the arts. Being a Dana Point Arts and Culture Commissioner allows me to encourage and promote artists of all types, all ages, from all walks of life. Art is for everyone. It brings people together, it heals and that is a wonderful and much needed part of life, especially these days. Nothing makes me happier than seeing the collective smiles, the joy of people gathered at events like Dana Point Summer Concerts in the Park, ArtFest and the like. It’s also awesome to see the excitement in the eyes of the artists when we tell them they're going to be featured in LOOKOUT, the quarterly DANA POINT community newsletter ROCKS

By Anthony Small when they have their art showcased at City Hall and the Community Center and when we can introduce young musicians to performing artists backstage via the Doheny Blues Foundation and really talk songwriting. I will always encourage others to dream big and then do something about it. Speaking as a musician myself, I can honestly say performing for my community at Dana Point Summer Concerts in the Park is a dream come true. It’s a rock and roll picnic with 3000 of your neighbors!

Just as Laguna Beach is known as an artist’s colony, Dana Point should be known worldwide as a music destination. Our local restaurants, hotels and venues have some

of the best musicians on the planet playing every week. I would be remiss if I didn’t pay respect to the great bassist and composer Max Bennett, who passed away last week.

He played with the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles and he also played right here in our town. Support local music in Dana Point.

I know I’m not alone in my belief that music is a fundamental part of the identity of Dana Point. Iconic events like our Concerts in the Park, Doheny Blues Festival, Dana Point Symphony, the upcoming Ohana Festival, the Festival of Whales concert on that crazy floating stage (I could go on), let anyone who’s listening know that the music plays on in Dana Point. I believe it’s a great start but just the beginning. I’m excited to see that momentum continue and I encourage like-minded individuals in town, on City Council and City staff to sing out loud and proud and continue pulling in this musical direction, especially as development in the Harbor and Lantern District etc. continues. Make space for music in Dana Point. We are a city of music. Now, it’s time to let the world now it.

September 15 was another record breaking Coastal Cleanup Day. Orange County Coastkeeper reported 44,000 pounds of trash were collected, up from 32,000 pounds last year. Cheers to the community effort!

However, it is crucial to realize what was not picked up, why and the consequences.

Most of the trash is plastic. Over time it breaks down to what is called microplastics that are hard to be spotted-not to mention nearly impossible to pick up. By gravity, wind or rain it goes into the waterways and then fish eat it. If it doesn’t kill the fish, chances are we kill the fish and eat the fish. The chemicals in our plastics

nazzy, psychological thrillers have been somewhat of a fad for the past five years, from the hit Gone Girl (2014) to the abysmal The Girl on the Train (2016). Both were adaptations of bestsellers and now the latest bestseller to be turned into a glam Hollywood crime flick is Paul Feig’s A Simple Favor. Adapted from Darcey Bell’s novel of the same name, Feig’s film is a little bit of Gone Girl, a little of Gossip Girl (2007-12) and a lot of over-the-top chaos along the way.

Popular YouTube “mommy vlogger” Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) unexpectedly befriends a high-end fashion PR director Emily Nelson (Blake Lively) one rainy afternoon. The two young mothers’ sons are elementary school classmates, and a couple months into the friendship, Emily has a simple favor for Stephanie: picking up her son from school one afternoon.

What follows is a bizarre series of twists and turns into both women’s backgrounds.

Jessica Sharzer’s script for A Simple Favor is a solid blend of satire and mystery with some catchy French pop songs in between. Feig is the current comedy filmmaker to experiment outside his comfort zone with edgier material, and he does a fine job. Kendrick and Lively are at their most intriguing in a long while, especially Kendrick. Between this and Crazy Rich Asians, co-star and heartthrob Henry Golding might be here to stay as well. In some ways, the wild tale is like a Lifetime network flick with a large budget and decent effects, but it’s entertaining as heck. DP www.danapointtimes.com

Since opening in the spring of 2018, Thiel reports having doubled business since taking over the former ice cream shop from its previous owners.

At Lil Skipper, Thiel says she aims to serve “good food for people in good moods.”

Largely catering to customers of the various charters throughout the Dana Point Harbor wharf, Thiel says she prides herself on making quick and easy, high quality food and snacks.

“It’s a fun place here. The kids want to come, and the parents know they aren’t going to break the bank for a snack or a

drink before or after their cruise or charter,” Thiel explained.

Originally from Wisconsin, Thiel is not bashful about the quality products she offers at Lil Skipper.

“We only offer the best,” Thiel said.

“Hand-dipped ice cream, Hebrew National hot dogs, Johnsonville Brats and Peets Coffee.”

“This is the best place ever,” a child screamed, scampering in to Lil’ Skipper towards the ice cream section to try his hand at presenting his greatest pirate “arrrrrghhh,” for which Thiel awards him with “booty” aka pirate rings and accessories.

Lil Skipper could be called a convenience store, but instead, it is quickly proving itself as a place of preference.

“Lil Skipper is a ‘ma & pop,’ just without the pop,” Thiel laughed. “Evolving the ice cream shop into a morning go-to for coffee, snacks, breakfast sandwich to go for the Catalina Flyer and Dana Wharf Whale Watching & Sportfishing passengers and an affordable, quick sweet treat or salty snack for harbor patrons has been a fun journey. Locals and tourists alike seem to enjoy the themed decor and opportunity to be a pirate for a moment.”

Dana Wharf Fish Count Dorado hits a high as bass come down

D

orado fishing hit a high point last week for Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said last week the fleet experienced the best single day of dorado fishing that he’s seen locally in a long time, if not ever.

Woolley’s 5-5 charter had to end its fishing early because they no more space to put any more fish on the boat after a rush of dorado. The Sum Fun pulled in 93 dorado on the day, and the boat from Oceanside that followed up on that patch of kelp also grabbed its fair share, according to Woolley.

The Boardroom hit the limits for its anglers, and the Helena took in a haul of 50 fish as well on the day. According to Woolley, the numbers slowed down for the rest of the week, but those “slower” numbers were really just normal numbers that fell from that high day. Flylined sardines and mackerel were the bait of choice, and lighter lines grabbed the bites.

The Dana Hills Nike Cross Country Invitational will run its 45th edition on Saturday, Sept. 22 with the first and most elite race going off at 8 a.m. at Dana Hills High School. The Division 1 boys senior/ invitational race runs at 8 a.m. followed by the Division 1 girls senior/invitational race running at 8:15 a.m. The last race of the day runs at 1:15 p.m.

The event runs 22 races with the event’s 5,482 runners separated into divisions by enrollment size and level of competitiveness. The top runners are selected for the invitational races that run with the Division 1 seniors.

As always, the three-mile course covers the entirety of the Dana Hills campus.

San Clemente made several point-blank saves late in the match and kept arms up in passing and shooting lanes to keep the Dolphins at bay.

Dana Hills’ Justin Edward had more than his fair share of saves to keep the Dolphins within one, including a save with 15 seconds remaining that sparked a final dramatic play.

Harriet Marbach Hughes Harriet Marbach Hughes age 81, of Dana Point went to be with the Lord on September 11, 2018. Harriet was born June 2, 1937 in Chicago, IL. to Ernest and Elizabeth (Diehl) Marbach. She graduated from Amundsen High School in 1955 and UCLA in 1960. She married Roland Hughes on November 11th 1962, they had two children Greg (Kay) Hughes and Valerie (Jim) Stephens. Following Roland’s ordination into the Presbyterian Church they served many congregations during their 43 years together notably in Newbury Park and S. Korea. Harriet was an exceptionally talented and vibrant Pastor’s wife with a quick wit and inspirational truths.

Harriet received her Master’s in Counseling and became a Licensed Therapist. She was widowed on May 2, 2004 and moved to Dana Point in 2007. She was determined to make every day good. She was an active leader at San Clemente Presbyterian Church and passionate about missions, even helping build homes in Mexico at 76! She was a wonderful mother and devoted grandmother.

She’s survived by her brother Herbert Marbach, 2 children, 6 grandchildren, 3 nieces and 2 nephews.

Memorial Service will be Saturday, September 29th at 3:00 at Malibu Presbyterian Church, 3324 Malibu Canyon Rd, Malibu.

What A Week To Be A Surfer Aloha vibes flow in San Clemente and Dana Point as local surfers pay it forward

I

t definitely hasn’t been a bad week to be a surfer in San Clemente and Dana Point. For starters, we’ve enjoyed an abundance of September swell. Everywhere has pretty much been going off.

That classic late-summer southern hemisphere action has lit up all the points and beaches in the area, and with the water and air hovering right in that sweet spot, the conditions have been idyllic.

“Lowers was about as fun as it gets,” reported WSL Championship Tour surfer and local hero Patrick Gudauskas.

But more than just a good few days of waves, the surf community has been rallying lately.

Let’s start with Patrick, his brothers Dane and Tanner Gudauskas, and their Positive Vibe Warriors Foundation. Last week, they teed off an epic golf fundraiser at the Bella Collina golf course in San Clemente.

“Everyone was sending it!” Patrick said.

“The tournament was filled up. The support was amazing. It’s going to really help the foundation continue to support water safety and education programs.”

Not done there, last Sunday the brothers hosted their eighth annual Stoke-O-

Rama at T-Street. With more than 120 kids entered, and who knows how many more running amuck on the beach in their wetsuits all day, it was a fine day for San Clemente’s surf families.

One spectator paused and remarked, “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen this many kids on a beach having so much fun.”

The waves were pumping all day, the beach games were heated; there were close to 50 kids in the ever-inspiring 8-and-under division (a/k/a “The Pops and Pups”), and it’s pretty safe to say a good time was had by all.

“You get more points if you throw shakas while you’re riding,” explained one young competitor to another in the middle of their heat.

The shakas were flowing and the aloha vibes were omnipresent.

And speaking of aloha, on Wednesday the Dana Point Surf Club teamed up with

the Capistrano Valley Boys & Girls Club to host 50 kids for a “surf experience” at Doheny. Recruiting surf club members to come help, the goal of the day was bring the surf community closer to those groups in our area that may not be quite as sandy.

“When we formed the club, one of my main goals was to somehow put community service first,” explained Eric Diamond, a lifelong Dana Point surfer and president of the Dana Point Surf Club. “At the end of the day, a ‘higher calling’ and service in our community should always remain a priority, and most importantly, just having a positive experience together.”

Working with the city of Dana Point, transportation was provided, the Boneyard Café on the beach at Doheny provided the food, and Girls In The Curl provided professional surf instruction and resources.

ith his epic style and epic vibes, this week’s Grom of the Week has to be none other than Zion Walla.

Watching him bounce around the Stoke-O-Rama all day, at the end of the day Patrick Gudauskas asked, “Are there any groms that really stood out today?”

And, of course, there was wee Walla, hanging by the announcers table, face caked in sunscreen, hair salty and sandy, smile running from ear to ear.

A little legend indeed. As you can see by the photo provided, the kid already charges—just like his old man, Jon (one of the first to paddle the infamous Cortes Bank during the winter of 2000-01). out to us for the now-officially recognized California Surfing Day. We bounced some ideas back and forth and put together an amazing concept: ‘In the True Spirit of Duke.’ We all wanted to share the enjoyment of riding waves with that aloha spirit.”

Spreading the aloha vibes and making the world a better place through surfing, Duke would have been stoked.

When it comes to the preservation of the history and culture of surfing, the good times just kept rolling this week with the Surfing Heritage Foundation and Culture Center’s 2nd Annual Golf Surfari at the San Juan Hills Golf Club.

Raising funds to continue their work in preserving and documenting surfing’s past, they’re also diligently working to develop more educational programs and expand their outreach both in the community and further afield.

One of the highlights was four beautifully handcrafted putters by some incredibly talented surfboard builders. Capo Beach’s Josh Martin turned in an amazing piece of functional art made from colorful recycled resin. Shapers Steve Walden, Bob “The Greek” Bolen and Jim Phillips submitted equally exquisite putters.

“We’re so lucky to have so much support and so many people that are really willing to put their time and energy into making this such a unique and special event,” said SHACC Executive Director Glenn Brumage. “Everyone really elevated the game this year and we’re so thankful. It speaks to how tight the surf community remains, not just here in San Clemente and Dana Point, but up and down the coast.”

And when the dust settled after all this?

Well, as I write this there’s still plenty of swell in the water and it might just be time to paddle out and get a few. DP

isn’t afraid to go fast on a dirt bike either.

On his 7th birthday, his dad posted this telling message on Instagram: “I love bearing witness to your kindness and the joy you exude in everything you do. I hope

this year brings you lots of fish, exotic bird sightings, stand-up barrels, single-track bike rides, powdery ski days and maybe even some first ascents.”

Outlook: South swell eases through the weekend as a new SSW swell moves in.

Surf is mainly knee-waist high (2-3’) with occasional plus sets at best summer-time spots. Winds look mainly onshore, but light in the early mornings. Tracking more fun size South Pacific swells the last few days of the month and into early October.
