Five things Dana Point should know this week Expense Reports Stir Discussion on Need for Disclaimer THE LATEST: The last “new business” item on the Sept. 17 Dana Point City Council agenda was to receive and file an update on expense reports being posted to each councilmember’s webpage on the city website. However, a conservative blog post regarding Councilmember Debra Lewis’s spending sparked discussion on whether there should be a disclaimer to indicate the expenses are approved.

“I would like something to say that these expenses have been approved. I want some sort of indication that these are approved expenses, not expenses that I’m spending because we have this unlimited payroll now,” Lewis said during the meeting.

CA Political Review describes itself as California’s “leading conservative source for insightful and innovative political news and commentary.” In a Sept. 16 post, author Stephen Frank highlighted Lewis’s spending, which including a $380 invoice on Spanish lessons.

City staff confirmed the expenditure was not a violation of policy. Lewis had requested the lessons as a training expense.

“We have paid for training and/or educational materials for staff and city council in the past,” said Mark Denny, city manager.

Lewis read aloud portions of the blog post during discussion to support her call for the disclaimer.

“You’re talking about people taking information and twisting politically for their purposes, and that’s just going to happen to us. It’s part of being in our position,” Mayor Joe Muller said.

Discussion concluded with Lewis stating she would work with the city to come up with language to indicate payments are approved per city policy.

On Lewis’s Facebook page, she issued the following statement: “My district has highest concentration of Spanish speakers. To reach out to them, I am learning Spanish and volunteer at R.H. Dana Elementary kindergarten Spanish immersion class. . . . Evidently Spanish lessons to speak with my constituents has roiled the right wing, now calling me a radical leftist, POS megalomaniac politician out for myself. You know you’re a force when opposition is reduced to name calling and distortions. Hola!”

City Council Votes to Join Coalition in Support of Boise Petition THE LATEST: The City of Dana Point received the green light to show support for the City of Boise in a monumental court case regarding homelessness.

During the Tuesday, Sept. 17 closed session meeting for Dana Point City Council, members unanimously voted to join a coalition of California counties and cities in support of the City of Boise’s petition for writ of certiorari with the United States Supreme Court.

The move allows for the city to join the coalition, which is headed by Renne Public Law Group, in filing an amicus curiae brief in support of the City of Boise’s Petition for Writ of Certiorari with the U.S. Court, requesting review of the Ninth Circuit’s decision in Martin v. City of Boise (“Martin”).

In Martin, the Ninth Circuit held that enforcement of anti-camping ordinances is unconstitutional when homeless individuals do not have another option for shelter.

“The Ninth Circuit’s decision creates numerous impediments and unanswered questions for cities and counties struggling to balance the needs of the homeless and public health and safety concerns related to the preservation of public spaces,” City Attorney Patrick Munoz said.

WHAT’S NEXT: After reviewing of the Petition for Writ of Certiorari and accompanying briefs, the U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether to formally review the Martin decision. By agreeing to join the coalition, the City will contribute a maximum of $5,000 toward the brief.—LB

Brough’s Accusers Issue Joint Statement; PR Group Represents TCA, Bartlett and Nonprofit THE LATEST: The founder and CEO of Crime Survivors has called for the resignation of 73rd District Assemblymember Bill Brough in a joint statement with three women who have alleged sexual misconduct by him.

In an email last month, Brough sent a similar draft of his Aug. 30 Dana Point Times “Letter to the Editor” titled “Setting the Record Straight” to members of the Orange County Republican Party

(OCGOP). The draft of the email, however, named individuals who have alleged sexual misconduct by Brough, while the published letter did not.

In Brough’s letter and email, he criticized the Transportation Corridor Agencies and called the Toll Roads a train wreck in need of massive reform.

“Originally, the system was created due to a lack of transportation funding. Now, my constituents pay four times for roads and this does not include tolls for driving on the toll roads,” the letter states.

On June 17, Orange County Supervisor and Chairperson Lisa Bartlett spoke at the OCGOP Central Committee meeting about an alleged incident of sexual misconduct that occurred in 2011, while both Bartlett and Brough served on Dana Point City Council. She cited the incident as reason for the party not to endorse Brough in his bid for reelection in 2020. Brough argues that this was in retaliation for his position regarding the Toll Roads. Bartlett serves on the San Joaquin Hills and Foothill Eastern TCA Boards.

Crime Survivors is a nonprofit organization that offers resources to victims of crimes. The group’s founder, Patricia Wenskunas, issued the joint statement on Monday, Sept. 16.

“Brough inexplicably names his accusers in an effort to publicly shame them and discourage other women from speaking out. Up until that email blast, his accusers had explicitly requested to remain anonymous due to their fear of retaliation,” the email states.

The joint statement was made with Bartlett, Jennifer Rodriquez and Heather Baez, who says she filed a harassment claim against Brough in 2017.

“As outlined in my original complaint to the California State Assembly, he made repeated and unwanted advances towards me for years, including inviting me to drinks, dinners, an overnight hotel stay, and an extremely offensive and non-consensual physical contact,” Baez states.

WHAT’S NEXT: When Dana Point Times asked if Brough intended to resign, he stated he felt more emboldened than ever to run for reelection.

“As you know from your reporting, the Bartlett and Baez claims were found to be without merit. I have provided that evidence,” Brough said. “The accusers have been publicly meeting with groups and individuals all summer spreading their false allegations against me; clearly, they are not concerned with anonymity.”

Brough alleges that Crime Survivors has been a client organization for Jeff Corless—the CEO of Venture Strategic, a public relations firm. Bartlett hired Venture Strategic to run her campaign for the Board of Supervisors. The firm was later awarded a contract with the TCA, follow-

Stolen Vehicle Suspect Apprehended in Capo Beach THE LATEST: Orange County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports of a stolen vehicle from San Clemente at approximately noon on Sunday, Sept. 15.

According to OCSD public information officer Carrie Braun, the vehicle was stolen from the Staples parking lot on Avenida Pico in San Clemente at 11:50 a.m.

“The suspect fled in the vehicle and the vehicle was located,” Braun said. “The suspect yielded to deputies approximately 10 minutes after the original call to dispatch and was taken into custody.”

Fire Crews Respond to Blaze at Rose Donuts THE LATEST: Orange County Fire Authority crews put out a fire at the site of Rose Donuts & Café, which was undergoing construction, in San Clemente on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

According to Jon Muir, spokesperson for OCFA, no one was injured as a result of the fire, which appears to have also caused significant damage to the neighboring nail salon, Best Nails, located in the shopping center on the 600 block of Camino De Los Mares.

While the cause of the fire is currently unknown, Muir said investigators were on site working to figure out how it started.

Muir said the call of a commercial fire came into the fire department at 9:26 a.m., and crews were able to put out the blaze within 30 minutes.—Shawn Raymundo danapointtimes.com

Celebrating Ohana Three-Day Event Brings a Diverse Roundup of Musicians

he three-day Ohana Festival returns to Doheny State Beach on Sept. 2729, bringing a diverse musical lineup to the Dana Point community.

This year’s headliners include Incubus, Eddie Vedder, The Strokes and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Rich Best is the president for Live Nation. He says that from day one, Ohana has been curated from the spirit of finding a collection of diverse bands that share great music, great songwriting and great people.

“Ego is checked at the door at Ohana.

The bands that we gravitate to embody that spirit,” Rich said. “You will see a healthy mix of different genres that come together, as well as a mixture of new bands and acts that have been together for 30-plus years. No rules really, just good music and even better people.”

will be offered this year, as well.

“We really have expanded that this year, and I know myself and our partner Eddie Vedder are incredibly proud of how this has come together,” Best said. “It’s easy to just write a check to support philanthropic efforts towards conservation issues; it’s a whole different thing to actually educate and bring real awareness to issues in our costal community, but also globally. With Storyteller’s, we do both. Quietly and humbly, we raise real dollars to support

some great causes, but also very loudly bringing an important educational component for the festivalgoers.”

Best says the festival has grown in a multitude of ways in addition to attendance. The event has developed in a short period of time into its own kind of culture.

“It’s grown in the stature of artists we are fortunate enough to have join us, but I think most of all, we’ve grown the Ohana experience. Ohana has developed in a short period of time into a very special

culture,” Best said.

Leadership in Dana Point is working toward shaping the city as a music destination for Orange County. Best says the city, along with Doheny State Beach, have been incredible partners in helping grow Ohana as a local festival since its inception four years ago.

“There have been other festivals within the community that have important history, but Ohana really stuck the flag in the ground in making it a real music destination. That doesn’t happen without a shared common goal amongst the city, the state, the Dana Point community, and all of us at Ohana,” Best said. “As we continue to grow, we only look to deepen these relationships. I imagine the economic impact is massive to Dana Point and the surrounding beach communities, so I think it benefits everyone to have an incredible weekend of music.”

Ohana will donate a portion of the proceeds to San Onofre Parks Foundation and The Doheny State Beach Interpretive Association. These organizations are California nonprofits that cooperatively work with the California State Parks to develop, preserve and enhance the recreation and experience of Southern California’s unique and beautiful coastal parks.

A WALK THROUGH HISTORY 9-11 a.m. This walk focuses on local Dana Point history. It is designed to introduce participants to the several different main historical periods (Acjachemen, Spanish Mission, Rancho, and Modern Era).

The walk lasts approximately 1-2 hours, covering about 1 miles. The walk occurs on the third Saturday of each month and begins at the Nature Interpretive Center, 34558 Scenic Drive, Dana Point.

Local Barbershop Shows Support for Young Boy Battling Cancer The Kings Club Barbershop in Dana Point hosted a fundraiser on Friday, Sept.

13 in support of Noah Povey, a 5-year-old boy recently diagnosed with cancer.

Earlier this month, Povey, of Laguna Beach, took a fall on his bike, and his parents took him to see a doctor. Medical staff informed family they would need to transfer Povey to a PICU unit in Los Angeles. There, a team of surgeons determined that a mass on Povey’s kidney was a Wilms tumor, a rare form of cancer that grows on one’s kidney.

Povey underwent radiation every day for six days, wrapping up on Monday, Sept.

16. The chemotherapy treatment is currently anticipated to be about 6-9 months.

During this time, Povey will not be able to attend school.

Dozens of young boys and men lined up at The Kings Club Barbershop on Friday to get their hair buzzed in support of Povey, who got his hair buzzed in preparation for chemotherapy.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to support Povey’s road to recovery, and the amount donated has already exceeded the $10,000 goal.

“We are so deeply appreciative of the community support; we’ve really felt the love,” said Layne Povey, Noah’s mother.

nated will go toward Noah’s medical bills.

If there is any money remaining, it will go toward a cause that supports those who have been diagnosed with cancer.”

Orange County Cities Join Global Climate Strike On Friday, Sept. 20, three days before the UN Climate Summit in New York City, young people and adults will strike across the U.S. and world to demand transformative action be taken to address the climate crisis, according to its organizers.

The Global Climate Strike comes just before countries will gather at the United Nations for the Climate Action Summit on Sept. 23, an event where countries from around the world are supposed to ramp up

efforts to curb greenhouse gases under the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.

Strikes in Orange County will begin as early as 7:30 a.m. in Laguna Beach, followed by strikes in Irvine, Tustin, Huntington Beach and Anaheim.

The strikes are largely inspired by 16-year-old Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg, who has been striking every Friday for about 26 weeks now.

“Adults keep saying we owe it to the young people, to give them hope, but I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. I want you to act. I want you to act as if the house is on fire, because it is,” Thunberg said recently to a packed room of Senate Democrats on Capitol Hill.

Thunberg is credited with raising global awareness of the risks posed by climate change, as well as with holding politicians accountable for their lack of action on the issue.

Millions of youth across 150 countries have been leading #FridaysforFuture school walkouts to demand a sustainable, livable future for their generation. Now, youth are calling on everyone else to stand with them in a worldwide climate strike.

On Friday, protestors plan to walk out of their schools, workplaces and homes to join together and demand a bold response to the climate crisis and kick off a global week of action.

Protesters are demanding an immediate end to fossil fuel extraction and consumption, as well as an end to the industry’s lobbying and media influence, according to organizers’ website strikewithus.org.

Their demands also include globally equitable climate solutions in the transition to a 100% renewable economy, and

Councilman Jamey Federico’s excuses for the City’s do-nothing approach to sober living homes fool nobody. Unlike neighboring cities, Dana Point has no ‘Zoning Ordinance’ regulating group homes in residential areas. On Monday, Sep 16., Huntington Beach decided unanimously to adopt an ordinance.

These ordinances do not ‘target’ home residents but aim to accommodate the interests of both group home residents and the wider community. But while our neighboring cities that have adopted such non-discriminatory ordinances rack up resounding legal victories, sober homes in Dana Point proliferate and the city has no real plan to do anything about it.

For two years, concerned residents have been urging the Council to adopt an Ordinance on the Costa Mesa "model." Such an ordinance would not only preserve residential neighborhoods; it would ensure the protection of vulnerable people, many of whom have been exploited in "bad" homes. Strangely however, the majority insists an Ordinance faces insuperable obstacles under non-discrimination laws, the Fair Housing Act and the ADA. It is of course unlawful to ban sober homes entirely from a city. But that does not preclude regulation at city level, provided it does not discriminate.

The Costa Mesa model regulates group homes in residential neighborhoods requires sober homes to apply for a city permit and limits their numbers by imposing a 650 foot buffer zone between facilities.

Mr. Federico touts the supposed success of Dana Point’s policy of suing sober homes that require a State license but fail to obtain one. The ‘success’ is, at best, mixed; by all accounts, the number of sober homes in residential areas of DP has doubled since 2014. Many facilities do not provide onsite treatment - so don’t need a state license: ergo, no case! The worst offenders get off scot-free. And to be sure, this policy fails to address the huge problem of ‘clustering’ and proliferation and the effect on residential neighborhoods.

If the Council will not allow discussion, I invite Mr. Federico, who says the

opinions expressed are his own, to debate the pros and cons of an Ordinance with me in a public forum. Citizens can then make up their own minds whether the City is looking after their interests.

Councilman Jamey Federico throwing around the empty threat of a $4 million lawsuit as an excuse to not even discuss this important safety issue for residents is a cop-out. If you are not in favor of it, fine; put it on the city council meeting agenda and go on record voting no.

Don’t skirt the issue; we don’t need a “Moscow Mitch” in Dana Point.

MESSAGE TO TCA: STOP MEDDLING MICHAEL SMITH, San Clemente

At one point in time, the Dana Point City Council was all in favor to do all they could to find out what was possible; they were leaders in South Orange County. Today’s city council won’t even put it on the agenda to discuss.

Does it make sense that the county itself and other OC cities (Costa Mesa, Laguna Niguel) are going ahead and enacting laws and ordinances to make their cities safer and yet Dana Point refuses to even talk about it, citing we might be sued?

The Costa Mesa ordinance, recently enacted and tested in court multiple times, has recently been upheld again. Their law affords protection to their residents and also those living in sober living homes.

Here are some of the things it would do—common-sense items that apply to all group homes: • Maintain a distance of 650 feet between group homes.

• Managers of group homes must reside in homes and be present 24 hours a day.

• Obtain a permit, disclose all owner/ operators, prove owner/operator and staff have no convictions for sex offenses, violent felonies, selling controlled substances.

• Provide affidavit that residents are disabled.

• Provide group home rules, regulations, forms and written intake procedures.

Sober living homes must comply with good neighbor policy, requiring that 48 hours prior to eviction or discharge, an operator must notify occupant’s emergency contact, contact OC Health Care Agency to determine if additional services are available, notify the city’s Network for Homeless Solutions.

What this law does: Prevents proliferation of group homes congregating in close proximity, protecting property values, keeps recovering addicts off our streets, prevents additional homeless people living in our city, reduces crime, gives protection to clients of the SLH by keeping them

If you are like me, then you do not like what the TCA is trying to do to San Clemente. There is no way that cutting through San Clemente with a toll road makes any sense. Firstly, the TCA has not conclusively shown us any real believable statistics that show a toll road here is even needed or justified.

The current amount of cars on 241 at Oso, where it terminates, is negligible, and doing just fine as it is. Secondly, connecting 241 thru San Clemente to I-5 will not only ruin our town, but it would most definitely make traffic worse all the time. It just doesn’t work. In fact, it’s intolerable! So one important thing we all can do is to avoid driving on any Toll Roads until TCA gets the message no toll roads through San Clemente! There are long-standing drive arounds to avoid 73 by using I-5 and 405. Likewise, to avoid 133 and 241, you can take I-5 to 55 instead. These routes may be only slightly longer, but they will save you up to $8.48 for a trip on 73 and $3.29 on 133 and $4.15 on 241. Instead of shelling out your money to TCA, vow to keep it and help send a message to them to stop meddling in our town’s well-being.

I know it’s not much money, but every little bit can certainly add up and will keep them from stealing our money and attempting to ruin San Clemente at the same time. Please pass this along, and hopefully more folks here who hate TCA will likewise join in the ban of their toll roads. Fight back, and the TCA will assuredly take heed.

ased on the marketing for Annapurna Pictures’ most recent feature, Hustlers, you’d think this is just another raunchy, slapstick comedy. But since its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month, there’s been a surprising amount of Oscar hype, particularly around co-star Jennifer Lopez. As someone who loves when comedies get award nominations, I kept an open mind. And it turns out Lorene Scafaria’s new film actually has a lot going for it.

In 2007 New York City, Destiny (Constance Wu) is making ends meet by working as a stripper at the city’s most popular strip club. She doesn’t just need the money for the bills and groceries, but also for her grandmother, who lives with her.

When veteran stripper Ramona (JLo) suggests they form a small group of their closest colleagues from the club to make up for the lost work after the 2008 housing market crash, things go in a little too deep, legally speaking.

Hustlers is loosely based on a real 2015 feature story from New York magazine called “Hustlers at Scores,”

by Jessica Pressler. The tone isn’t comedic, although there is a decent amount of comic relief, and the characters are successfully crafted to be relatable and endearing. While it does feel like a weak start to Oscar season ahead, Lopez’s consideration isn’t entirely filler. She reminds us that she can be taken seriously with the right role, and not just appropriate in romcoms. The most impressive aspect of Hustlers is Scafaria’s script and direction, both of which are a big improvement from her previous movies. Though not exactly a good fit for a date-night movie, Hustlers would work best on a night out with a group of friends, or even viewing alone. DP

n July 5, American Association for the Advancement of Science published The Global Tree Restoration Potential, which says adding one trillion trees could capture 25% of global annual carbon emissions. Hope.

On August 22, French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted, “Our house is burning. Literally. The Amazon rain forest—the lungs which produces 20% of our planet’s oxygen—is on fire.” Grief.

On September 14, Time magazine published “The Amazon Rain Forest Is Nearly Gone.” “Logging yards, cattle enclosures and soy farms sit on the fringes of a vanishing forest. Powered by COMMUNITY, murky sources of capiSUSTAINABILITY, tal and rising demand PROSPERITY for beef, a violent and

Hope Jahren wrote in Lab Girl, which talks about her life in parallel with trees, “Every single year, at least one tree is cut down in your name. Here’s my personal request to you: If you own any private land at all, plant one tree on it this year. If you are renting a place with a yard, plant a tree in it and see if your landlord notices. If he does, insist to him that it was always there.

Throw in a bit how exceptional he is for caring enough about the environment to have put it there.”

While fighting for their lives, trees serve us tirelessly. They calm our mind and reduce crime, increase property values and business opportunities, cool the air, filter noise and pollution, reduce soil erosion and stormwater runoff, and much more.

Can you become a tree-hugger? Please.

Nature and humanity need everyone’s help.

• Right before the rainy season is a great time to plant a tree; make it a native tree. If you absolutely cannot plant a tree anywhere, donate (at least a dollar) to UN’s Trillion Tree Campaign.

• Urge the city to become a Tree City USA. Orange County has 15, all outside the tri-city area.

• Support local sustainable farms: buy their products at stores and farmers markets, dine at local sustainable restaurants.

Stop wasting food.

• Talk about trees like how you talk about dogs.

Four Score DHHS football is 4-0 for the first time in school history

T

he Dana Hills football team crossed into uncharted territory on Friday, Sept. 13.

The Dolphins put forth another stellar defensive effort and ground out the offense to edge out and upset Laguna Beach, 107, and improve to 4-0 for the first time in school history.

Liam Boersma led the defense by adding five sacks to his season total of 14.5, which leads the nation, according to MaxPreps.

Lukas Saavedra and Sam Shultz each pulled in interceptions, with Saavedra’s denying a score in the end zone.

Tristan Van der Linde ran for 95 yards, and Zack Saavedra threw a touchdown pass to Kellan McGrath to tie the game in the third quarter. Kian Afrookhteh kicked the go-ahead field goal in the fourth quarter to send Dana Hills, ranked No. 10 in Division 12 last week, over Laguna Beach, then-

ranked No. 2.

“First, we had a chip on our shoulder and something to prove,” said Boersma, a senior defensive end. “Now, we’ve got to keep going with it. We feel confidence, especially when everyone around the school is supporting us.”

The Dolphins’ “revenge tour,” as the players are calling it, continues on Friday, Sept.

20 at Irvine High. The Vaqueros are 0-3.

“I think it’s going to carry on throughout the season,” senior quarterback Zack Saavedra said of the Dolphins’ momentum.

“We’ve just got to make sure to go week by week and not get too ahead of ourselves.

Stay within our own game.”

This is all a new experience for this group of seniors. The Dolphins posted two wins in 2018, three in 2017 and one in 2016.

Dana Hills hadn’t won four games since a 5-6 season in 2013.

“It’s a little weird,” senior lineman Tanner Vallejo said. “You feel in the hallways it’s just different. After three years of going to class on Monday morning and having people say, ‘Ha, you suck,’ it’s really liberating, in a way.”

Honor the Valor DHHS football honors 50 veterans in 8th annual event

hile the Dana Hills football team earned a 10-7 win over Laguna Beach to improve to 4-0 for the first time in school history, the real victory came outside the lines for the team’s eighth annual Honor the Valor event.

The Dolphins, the 12th Man Football Club and Dana Point 5th Marines honored 50 military veterans and the Gold Star Family of Army SPC Marques Irving Knight, Kathi Conroy and Chris Naganuma with a pregame honoree dinner and on-field ceremony, as well as a postgame jersey exchange between players and veterans.

“It’s powerful being able to represent the veterans,” Dana Hills lineman Tanner Vallejo said. “When you’re on the field and you have those veterans on the sidelines, all those active-duty Marines helping out, it’s something special that you get to be their surrogate warrior and really just play your heart out for that cause.”

blue, light blue and black digital camouflage jersey with an honored veteran’s name on the back and patches on their shoulders signifying the veteran’s branch of service.

“It meant a lot,” Dana Hills quarterback Zack Saavedra said. “I have siblings that are in the military, so it did mean a lot to me. It took a big toll on me at the end of

the game. It was one of those games we had to fight through.”

A handful of the honorees were veterans of World War II, including 94-year-old Tom Cataldo.

“The people use the word huge or great or whatever,” Cataldo said. “This was greater than that. It was awesome, really.

have my back.”

While reaching new heights, Dana Hills has kept its focus and knows there’s still plenty left to achieve.

“We’re not at a point where we can flaunt it,” Vallejo said. “The season’s not over yet.

We’re going to go as far as we can and be as humble as possible.” DP

Cataldo, who has spent the past 35 years running the nonprofit Better Vision for Children Foundation with a current office in Dana Point, received the No. 10 jersey from receiver Lukas Saavedra.

“During the game, I’m standing on the sideline,” Cataldo said, “and right in front of me, Lukas intercepts a pass for a play that really turned the game. It was very terrific.”

For Cataldo, it was a serendipitous chance that he received Saavedra’s jersey, as it brought him back to the early days of his foundation.

“When Lukas sent me this letter, the name Saavedra just rung a bell,” Cataldo said. “Thirty-five years ago, I started this foundation in Mexico, and the very first vision screening we did down there was in an orphanage just south of Tijuana. The doctor who was in charge, his name was Saavedra.”

Cataldo’s Better Vision for Children Foundation fights to prevent and cure the partial and total blindness from amblyopia.

Also known as lazy eye, amblyopia is when vision is reduced in one eye because of the brain and eye not working together.

While Cataldo said working in the nonprofit world can be a thankless job, he called his experience at Honor the Valor “rewarding.”

Summer’s Not Done Yet

With plenty of surf events still on the calendar, the good times keep rolling in SC and DP

ust when you thought summer was over, the good times keep on rolling.

With warm water and blue skies, there’s still plenty of surfy goodness to go around, and there’s no shortage of stuff happening around San Clemente and Dana Point to get stoked on.

For starters, Kolohe Andino, who’s currently ranked third in the world on the WSL’s Championship Tour, just took the silver medal at the ISA World Surfing Games in Japan. The contest was a requirement for those looking to potentially qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Andino’s performance not only got him to the podium, it also helped carry the U.S.A. National Surf Team to a silver medal in the team competition.

At the end of the WSL season in December, the top two American men and top two women will be selected for the Olympic Games. As Andino is currently ranked third, he’s the highest-rated American and appears bound for Olympic glory.

“It’s really special to represent the United States and see surfing rise to this level,” Andino said afterward. “I’m honored to be part of all of this and be able to represent my country.”

s we settle into a new school year and NSSA surf season, it’s always fun to see who steps up their game and rises to the challenge of not only ripping in the water but shredding in the classroom, too.

Meet 14-year-old Brayden Burch. A freshman at San Clemente High, he kicked off his NSSA season in Huntington Beach a couple of weeks ago and absolutely shined. In pristine, head-high conditions, he won the highly competitive Open Junior division and was named NSSA Surfer of the Week.

hosted the 2019 Follow The Light Awards at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point. A grant program for aspiring surf photographers established in the memory of longtime Surfing Magazine photo editor Larry “Flame” Moore, who sadly lost his fight with cancer in 2005, the response to this year’s Follow The Light Awards was incredible. After receiving nearly 100 submissions that came in during the summer, the judging panel picked five finalists from around the world.

In the end, it was Nick Green from Tasmania who took the top honors. He was awarded a $5,000 cash prize, as well as the opportunity to shoot for Vans at the Triple

Previous to his performance at the HB Pier, Brayden’s last big victory came when he took out the Middle School Boys division at the 2019 National Interscholastics.

But it had been a long time since he’d bagged an NSSA Open Season win. In fact, it had been since he competed in the 12-and-under division.

“In the final, my Dad told me to sit on the lefts, and as it turns out, those were the heat winning waves,” Burch said. “It took a lot of time and training to get me here!”

The win elevates Brayden to the No. 1 spot in the rankings, where he’d love to sit for the rest of the season. When asked about his goals, Burch explained, “To keep the ball rolling and make more finals and maybe win a couple more.”

Crown of Surfing on the North Shore of Oahu this winter. And as the photographer who traveled the farthest to get to the awards, he also received an opportunity from the WSL to shoot the Freshwater Pro in Lemoore, California, which takes place later this week.

“I could never have dreamed of this.

The other finalists were so talented, and it’s amazing just to be part of that group.

To come away with the win, I’m absolutely over the moon,” Green said after the awards.

While we’re on the subject of SHACC, next week the organization is hosting a drive-in movie night in the Dana Point

Harbor. Showing the seminal ’70s surf film Five Summer Stories, the show will take place in the harbor area on September 25 from 5-9 p.m. Released in 1972 by MacGillivray/Freeman Films, the movie features luminaries such as Gerry Lopez, Eddie Aikau, Sam Hawk and David Nuhuhiwa, as well as music by local band Honk.

The Dana Point Boardriders Club has something special lined up for Monday, September 23. Teaming up with the City of Dana Point and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley, they’ll be hosting a surfing day for kids who don’t have the opportunities to get to the beach that often. Boys and girls ages 10 to 16 will be picked up after school by the Dana Point Trolley and taken to Doheny to experience an afternoon of riding the waves with volunteer surf instructors from the Dana Point Boardriders Club. This is the second time the club has hosted the surf day.

“I volunteered last year and will be out there again this year. It is so heartwarming to see the faces of these kids when they get on a surfboard for the first time.

It reminds me of when I first learned to surf with my dad at the age of 3. He would take me out on his board with him,” said 18-year-old Ian Gottron, a member of the Dana Point Boardriders Club and former student at Dana Hills High School.

Finally, the Ohana Fest will be coming to Doheny from September 27-29. Inspired

by Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, every year the list of participating acts seems to get better and better. This year, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Strokes and local crooner Donavon Frankenreiter will be among the featured groups.

So, there you go, if you surf and aren’t ready to let go of summer yet, there’s plenty of stuff to get involved in over the next week or two. If we don’t see you in the water, hopefully, we’ll see you on the sand. DP
