Dana Point Celebrates California Surfing Day THE LATEST: In honor of California Surfing Day, the Dana Point Surf Club and the City of Dana Point spent the day in the surf at Doheny State Beach with boys and girls from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley.

On Monday, Sept. 23, boys and girls ages 10 to 16, were picked up after school by the Dana Point Trolley from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley location in San Juan Capistrano and taken to the beach to experience an afternoon of riding the waves with volunteer surf instructors from the Dana Point Surf Club.

The Dana Point Surf Club provided approximately 30 volunteer professional-class surfers and instructors, as well as certified Orange County lifeguards, who are all members of the club, to provide safe instruction and guidance to the boys and girls.

Ian Gottron, 18, volunteered as a surf instructor last year and returned this year to mentor kids with the Boys & Girls Club.

“It is so heartwarming to see the faces of these kids when they get on a surfboard for the first time. It reminds me of when I first learned to surf with my dad at the age of 3. He would take me out on his board with him,” said Gottron.

Gottron is a member of the Dana Point Surf Club and former student at Dana Hills High School. Nikki’s Café in Capistrano Beach named a donut after Gottron for his surf achievements earlier this year.

“It made such a difference to all of the young people who participated. Whether it was the first time in the water for the kids from the Boys & Girls Club or the members of our Surf Club who volunteered,” said Eric Diamond, executive committee chairman, Dana Point Surf Club.—Lillian Boyd

Stranded Dana Point Harbor Sea Lion Finds Home in Chicago Zoo THE LATEST: A sick California sea lion that was rescued near the Dana Point Harbor has found a home at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.

In November 2018, Carolyn the sea lion was found dehydrated, malnourished (weighing just 46 pounds—an animal her age should weigh about 100 pounds), and appeared to not be able to fend for herself. Stranded on the beach near Dana Point Harbor, Carolyn Dana Point Times September 27-October 3, 2019

was rescued by staff from Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC) in Laguna Beach.

In addition, X-rays revealed that Carolyn had stones in her stomach, which is presumed to be why she was not eating. Once the stones passed, she started eating again and was released back into the wild in January 2019.

However, just a month later, she was found again at the harbor looking emaciated.

Back at PMMC, she started eating again from staff. Another exam revealed she had a cataract in her right eye. At that time, NMFS officials determined she would not be able to survive on her own.

Six months earlier, Sabiena, another sea lion, was found at Westward Beach in Malibu, and rescued by staff from Marine Mammal Care Center (MMCC) in San Pedro. She had multiple puncture wounds and fishhooks in her body, which led to a ruptured cornea. Sabiena was also extremely malnourished, weighing just 31 pounds.

Repairs Continue at Capistrano Beach THE LATEST: The City of Dana Point issued several updates during the month of September regarding emergency repairs at Capistrano Beach—a county-operated beach. City staff announced completion of the emergency repairs on Wednesday, Sept.

25, with a few minor items left to finish.

“The City has been making good progress on the placement of sand cubes at Capistrano County Beach to protect critical storm drain and water quality infrastructure from erosion caused by wave action,” the City of Dana Point Facebook

page states. “The majority of the sand cubes are in the ground, but we will be continuing to do work over the next two weeks to finalize the emergency repairs.”

Capistrano Beach has undergone several projects and repairs since inclement weather caused extensive damage in November 2018.

“We want to take this opportunity to remind the bicycle community to walk your bikes on the shared use path at Capistrano County Beach for your safety and the safety of others,” a city update stated on Sept. 23.

“Law enforcement and OC Parks have indicated that they will be citing violators.”

Short-Term Rental Objectives on Agenda THE LATEST: Councilmember Jamey Federico brought forth an agenda item to address short-term rental regulation during the Oct. 1 Dana Point City Council meeting.

The city’s current Short Term Rental Subcommittee first met in April 2018, and an informal survey was conducted in June 2018 on short-term rental policies.

According to Federico’s agenda report, the recommended action is for city council to formally adopt policy objectives that staff and the subcommittee will use in drafting any proposed ordinance. Federico calls for the ordinance to maintain the character of Dana Point neighborhoods by not encouraging absentee corporate investment, to firmly protect against nuisances, to balance the rights and responsibilities of all residents and homeowners and to honor HOA regulations.

Feedback on Harbor Concept Designs Summarized THE LATEST: A representative with the Dana Point Harbor Partners provided an update on community feedback regarding merchant-side concept designs for the harbor’s revitalization on Monday, Sept. 23.

The partners hosted community events in August at the Ocean Institute and two open house events on Sept. 3-4 to garner comments and feedback. Poster boards that showcased colors and materials, landscape designs, ideas for patios, trellises and seating, future events and programmable areas, tenants, and overall look and feel were displayed at all three community events.

The harbor partners received more than a thousand comment cards. Greg Seminoff, of SMS Architects, was part of the team that put together the workshops.

He spoke before the Dana Point Planning Commission on Monday, Sept. 23.

“We got high marks on whale and dolphin statues, ideas of public art, things that focus on the community and orientation to the water,” he said. “One of the highest remarks we received was music.

The community wants to see a space that offers live music in the harbor.”

Feedback emphasized a desire for natural and organic landscape rather than overly manicured plants, a need for variety in roofing, trellises and colors, and preference for open outdoor and indoor seating.

“People want a mix of fine and affordable dining,” he said. “Comments indicated a desire for variety. Craft beer and wine, diversity; not all restaurants need to be seafood.”

Other suggestions included farmers markets, increase in parking, modern surf equipment shops, vintage pop-up events, as well as dog-friendly and child-friendly amenities.

Making a Marina DPHP and Boaters Await Changes for Waterside Revitalization

lans to restructure and revitalize the Dana Point Harbor’s marina have been submitted to the California Coastal Commission. Now the Dana Point Harbor Partners are working to address the commission’s feedback and anticipating a hearing before the agency by summer of 2020—hopefully.

Joe Ueberroth, of Bellwether Financial Group, will restructure the marina, while Bryon Ward, of Burnham-Ward Properties, and Dustin Schmidt, of R.D. Olson Development, will work together on the harbor’s commercial core.

The lessees, known as the Dana Point Harbor Partners, took over a 66-year lease to manage the harbor and oversee redevelopment in an agreement with the County of Orange. Efforts to revamp the harbor were about 20 years in the making.

The renovation is anticipated to cost about $330 million.

Dana Point Harbor History

The Dana Point Harbor was established in 1961 as a safe harbor in the coast of California, and the stretch of land was entrusted to the county in accordance with the Dana Point Tidelands Act. “. . . Lands shall be used by said county, and its successors, only for the establishment, improvement and conduct of a harbor, and for the construction, maintenance and operation thereon of wharves, docks, piers, slips, quays and other utilities, structures, facilities and appliances necessary or convenient for the promotion and accommodation of commerce and navigation, and for recreational use, public park, parking, highway, playground, and business incidental thereto,” the act says.

James Lenthall, the president of the Dana Point Boaters Association and the chair for the Dana Point Harbor Advisory Board, says it’s important to keep consistent with that mission.

“Shops and restaurants can be a vital component to a harbor. But it’s crucial to us that those things exist to serve the boater, and not the other way around,” Lenthall said.

Looking Back and Looking Forward on Marina Revitalization

Ueberroth’s resume in marinas, particularly in Newport Beach, led Ward to approach him about working on the project. Ueberroth had worked in the hospitality industry, marina management and business prior to the harbor lease acquisition.

The Dartmouth University graduate had founded investment company Bellwether Financial Group in 1997 and Bellport Group in 1998—a joint venture company that continues to operate marinas in locations including California and Japan. Ueberroth joined the board for Bellingham Marine—a marine construction company—in 1997 and acquired the company in 2006.

While there haven’t been slip rate increases, within months of the lease being finalized, the partners moved forward in adjusting cost calculations for overhang allowance (or the length a boat’s size exceeds a slip). Prior policy had allowed for a three-foot overhang allowance. Extra costs are calculated for six-inch increments that exceed the limit.

In DPHP’s agreement with the County, slip fees will be calculated by the length of the slip or the overall length of the vessel, whichever is greater. Even if the rate per foot remains the same, boaters whose vessels exceed the length of their slip were notified that their rate is increasing

commensurate with the amount of their overhang.

The Dana Point Boaters Association addressed an increase in slip fees for overhang costs in its Dec. 5, 2018 newsletter.

“DPHP is calling this a slip rate ‘correction.’ Though this slip rate formula is the standard across most marinas, DPHP was not contractually obligated to implement these adjustments immediately, and doing so in their first month on the job has sadly earned some ill will among those impacted,” the newsletter stated. “We would have preferred at least 30 days’ notice with perhaps a January 1 implementation date. Even better, they should have demonstrated visible, tangible improvements to the boater experience under their watch before asking anyone for more money.”

Ueberroth says the implementation disproportionately impacted smaller boats, which was an unintended consequence.

“It was unfortunate that one of our first implementations (as lessees) was not well-received,” Ueberroth said. “What we’ve tried to do is make sure we are fair, and we follow through on our commitments.”

Ueberroth says that measuring boats and adjusting slip fees was meant to ensure costs and fees were rolled out fairly and accurately.

Another one of the first initiatives the Page 4

partners set out to do since taking over the lease in November was to improve the slip waitlist. Previously, there were two separate waitlists for the east and west marinas. Under the partners, the two lists were combined. Names were combed through to ensure those on the list still had desire for a slip.

For many years, boaters have been able to bypass the waitlist through brokers, LLCs and trusts. Lenthall says this aspect of boating culture has likely added years to the waitlist.

“If an LLC owns a boat, and you sell a share of the LLC to somebody for coincidentally the market value of the boat, that’s now a concealed financial transaction that helps the buyer of the LLC share now become the owner of the vessel,” Lenthall said. “This is not a criminal act, but it’s certainly a violation of the slip license agreement.”

Lenthall says he doesn’t think there’s a boater in this harbor who doesn’t know someone who has done this or has done it themselves.

“This part of the slip license agreement has not been properly enforced. It’s so common that I think a lot of people who have done it think it’s a legitimate transaction,” Lenthall said.

Last fall, the partners offered an amnesty period that allowed for boaters who obtained their slip this way to confess and modify their slip license agreement.

EYE ON DP (Cont. from page 4) “We’re working really hard to ensure that when people leave this harbor, the person that gets the next space is the person on the waitlist,” Ueberroth said. “It’s been traditional for people to circumvent that system by buying a boat, obtaining a slip, utilizing an LLC and selling their boat without declaring it’s been sold. We’re going to make sure that those transactions do not continue in the future.”

Sailing Onward

The partners submitted plans for the marina to the CCC on Aug. 23 and have since received comments back from the agency.

“We’re hoping to be put on the agenda by summer 2020,” Ueberroth said. “The comments were asking for more specifics, in several different areas, and from our experience, we see that as typical. No comments came as a surprise.”

Ueberroth says he has partnered with developers who have built more California coastal facilities than all his competitors combined, and that he has experience designing facilities that adhere to what the Coastal Commission requires.

Construction for the new marina will be split into 18 phases. Boaters with tenure will get priority in selecting their new slip.

The new design, if approved, means a loss of 150 slips.

“The (CCC) initially recommended that the goal be to aim for zero slip loss,”

Lenthall said. “But with new regulations and in order to be ADA-compliant, some slips had to go.”

The average slip size will increase from 30 feet to 32 feet.

“We’re losing some slips, but not for any other reason than to accommodate current regulation and demand,” Lenthall said.

“You could significantly eliminate smaller slips to build 40-foot slips and make more money. But this is an affordable-access har-

bor. And the Coastal Commission affirmed this is a small boat harbor in 2009 by limiting the average slip size to 32 feet.”

Ueberroth says the marina will have rounded fingers (or docks) to allow for easier, safer docking of a boat. Cornered edges can cause damages. There will also be no steel used in construction, and WiFi will be available for boaters to access.

“Wi-Fi is a unique process to bring to boaters,” Ueberroth said. “But we’re going

to work diligently to bring that even prior to redevelopment of the harbor.”

Most marinas are on public land, county or city.

“Coastal Commission will have due process and hold public hearings. We believe we have listened and collaborated with the community,” Ueberroth said.

“The vast majority of the comments we get are to ‘please move forward fast.’ ” The partners had originally included both the waterside marina redevelopment and the Embarcadero dry storage into one project. However, Embarcadero was removed from the submission.

“We believed Embarcadero was more tied to the commercial core,” Ueberroth said. “The next step is to get permits (from the county) to extend day boater parking.”

Boater parking was also designed to be less concentrated near the commercial area. The slips located directly in front of the merchant-side are less concentrated in order to avoid parking issues for both boaters and visitors.

“We’ve worked hard to listen to the community and design something the community wants to see,” Ueberroth said. “One of our biggest commitments is to rebuild this harbor, and we’ve dedicated a lot of resources to make sure we’re moving quickly through that process.

Boaters have waited decades for this to happen; they’re very anxious to have a new harbor.” DP

Watermen’s Plaza Welcomes Newest Addition A ribbon-cutting event was held for the latest installation at Watermen’s Plaza in Dana Point. A bronze statue of Bruce Brown behind the camera was unveiled before a crowd of family, surfers, community members and city officials on Thursday, Sept. 19.

Bruce Brown directed The Endless Summer with a $50,000 budget. The documentary film follows two surfers, Mike Hynson and Robert August, on a surf trip around the globe. The two aim to chase summer around the world in a quest to surf abroad.

The movie was released in 1966 and

grossed $20 million. Roger Ebert gave positive criticism on the film, noting “the beautiful photography he brought home almost makes you wonder if Hollywood hasn’t been trying too hard.”

The photo used on the The Endless Summer poster, which was created by artist John Van Hamersveld, was taken at Salt Creek Beach. A mosaic of the film poster was also unveiled at the Watermen’s Plaza that day.

Bruce Brown’s installment follows statues for Hobie Alter, the inventor of the Hobie catamaran, and stylish surf pioneer Phil Edwards. Watermen’s Plaza is located near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Del Obispo Street, neighboring Denny’s.

DPYC Boy Sails to Victory The Dana Point Yacht Club’s very own Christopher Daher won his division in

the RS Tera North America Championships, hosted by the club on Sept. 21-22.

Daher topped the 33-boat Gold Fleet division in the RS Tera Sport Championship Series, with Oliver Ernest of the Dana West Yacht Club finishing fifth and Xyler Yee of Dana Point Yacht Club seventh.

Participants ranged from ages 7-13 and traveled from as far as Maine to compete. Eight races were scheduled over Saturday and Sunday. Qualifiers from three races advanced to the final races on Sunday. DPYC Youth Sailing Director Anthony Capri described conditions on each day as challenging. There were heavy winds on Saturday ranging 12-13 miles per hour. On Sunday, winds slowed down to 5-6 miles per hour, but there remained a strong current.

“Chris sailed incredibly, winning three out of five races by minutes, which in sailing is substantial. In all, he beat 32 other sailors,” Capri said.

Daher is 12 years old and resides in Rancho Santa Margarita. His mother, Julie Daher, says she and her son travel to Dana Point regularly for his passion for sailing.

According to a press release issued

by OC Coastkeeper, a few unusual items recovered included a message in a bottle, strollers, a Swiffer and a yoga mat.

“Throughout Orange County, trash from inland communities travels through storm drains and rivers, polluting the region’s waterways and beaches,” the press release states. “Trash cleanups stand as a last line of defense to prevent this debris from polluting local waters and harming wildlife.

The annual Coastal Cleanup Day event attracts thousands of volunteers for a oneday event to keep beaches across California clean, beautiful and thriving.”

OC Coastkeeper is a nonprofit clean water organization that seeks to protect fresh- and saltwater ecosystems.

“Every year, we love watching volunteers of all ages come out to the coast to help lend a hand toward Orange County’s pollution problem,” said Patrick Irizzary, Orange County Coastkeeper Cleanup Day Coordinator. “Coastal Cleanup Day teaches volunteers about the impact they have on our coastal environments, and inspires them to continue to keep beaches clean all year long.”

Ohana Festival: Community, Respect, Music

T

his Friday through Sunday, September 27-29, Ohana Festival returns for the fourth year in a row to Doheny State Beach, a place host Eddie Vedder himself has referred to as hallowed ground.

The world-class lineup includes headlining sets by The Strokes, Eddie Vedder and Red Hot Chili Peppers, as well as an amazingly diverse lineup that includes Tash Sultana, Incubus, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats and Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, to name just a few. The great news is additional tickets have been released for the previously announced sold-out weekend shows.

In an interview with “Dana Point ROCKS” last year, Vedder shared this about the origins of Ohana: “I believe the idea was simply this: where can we set up a stage or two as close to the beach as possible? After months of research, the answer came back: Doheny. This was stunning news to me, as Doheny was the spot where I caught my first waves as a kid. I had carried so many indelible memories of being 9-10 years old out there. Buying eight feet of bungee cord from Jack’s Surf Shop to fashion a leash . . . those cords came whipping back. It really came flooding back to me that day before the first show.”

F

rom 1974-1978, there was no bigger female solo music artist in the U.S. than Linda Ronstadt. Now, with the help of Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, the singer herself gets to tell her side of the success story. The Sound of My Voice is a pretty straightforward documentary, direction-wise.

We get all of the usual talking-head commentaries from Ronstadt’s friends and colleagues, while the vocalist is heard primarily through off-camera narration on her life’s backstory.

What made Linda different from contemporaries such as Joni Mitchell, Carole King and Carly Simon is that she wasn’t a songwriter. She didn’t have much interest in creating the words to her songs on paper, but instead took already existing material and put her own spin on it, like with Clint Ballard’s “You’re No Good” and Buddy Holly’s “It’s So Easy.” One thing that might have been a nice addition to the doc would be Ronstadt’s thoughts on being one of the few women in her peer group not writing her own tracks.

The highlights of the new feature are all of the great performance footage and Linda going into detail on her family’s Mexican background and semi-upbringing. Because of the 95-minute runtime, a lot of interesting aspects of her career and life are also compromised in exposure. Even so, it is refreshing that Epstein and Friedman found a way to make the ending bittersweet and hopeful, rather than easily depressing. All in all, I would say The Sound of My Voice is a good starting point for new fans looking to learn about the music legend’s life.

But maybe it’s too safe and basic for longtime fanatics. DP

OCTA // The Orange County Transportation Authority offers discounted rates to seniors aged 60 and older, as well as those with disabilities and Medicare cardholders. For a one-time local route fare, seniors have to pay only 75 cents.

A one-day pass purchased on the bus is $1.50, while a prepaid one-day pass is $1.35. And 30-day passes, which regularly cost $69, are lowered to $22.25 for seniors.

REGENCY THEATRE // Seniors “61 and better” can enjoy a movie for $9.50 at the Regency Theatre in San Juan Capistrano. The going rate for a regular matinee showing is $10.50 and the evening showings cost $12.50, but seniors can enjoy the $9.50 rate all day long. This discounted senior fee, however, doesn’t apply to the theater’s VIP screenings.

There are so many scenarios that could cause a personal financial crisis, such as an in ury and dealing with medical e penses, credit card debt and even a scam. ccording to the Federal Trade ommission, seniors are more vulnerable to identity theft scams that can leave your personal financial portfolio and general well-being in shambles.

It’s important to be able to identify the problem at hand and keep an eye out or red lag o ers or calls.

Outside or pro essional help and resources may be needed to be able to identi y the financial problem or the root o the problem you may be acing. For e ample, a trusted amily member or friend may be better equipped to put together a reasonable budget if the problem is overspending and credit card debt.

Pet sitter or dog walker: Depending on breed and size of the pet, being a pet sitter and or dog walker is beneficial or both parties. eing around animals is o tentimes rela ing and is beneficial or ones health. The physical activity re uired is lower impact and, again, beneficial or both parties involved.

The bottom line is to surround yoursel with like minded people to support you on your ourney to a sense o reedom, which in my opinion is the truest definition o health and living well at any age.

Let s ocus on the fitness pillar because, in my pro essional opinion, it can help connect with all other pillars. Physical inactivity has been identified as the ourth leading risk actor or global mortality rom the orld ealth Organi ation. There are three di erent types o e ercise that can help your body transition through new phases o li e with grace and independence.

Cardiovascular Exercise: The merican eart ssociation recommends minutes per week o moderate intensity activity or minutes per week o vigorous activity. These activities can be spent walking, running, cycling, or doing recreational sports. Find something that you en oy and challenge yoursel weekly to setting new goals.

Mobility Exercise: Static and active dynamic stretching, core work along with moving as many oints through their ull range o motion with control and purpose provide individuals with a healthy mobility e ercise plan. Something as simple as doing three sets o sit ups, but ocusing on moving your spine one vertebra at a time each repetition, provides the control and purpose that will show the power o a properly e ecuted mobility e ercise.

Resistance Training: The final orm o e ercise that will improve muscular strength and endurance. There are many tools that can be used, including dumbbells, sandbags, machines etc. oving against the weight o your body can su fice in some ma or strength progress like using a bench or a chair simply to sit and stand times in a row. that is, or becomes too

No Limit Lifting Marilyn Katzmark, an 80-year-old San Clemente resident, deadlifts 135 pounds after a strength training session at Pacific Strength on Friday, Sept. 6. According to her trainer, Valerie Hedlund, the certified team leader at Pacific Strength, Katzmark, is actually able to deadlift 270 pounds. Throughout her life, Katzmark has remained active, participating in marathons and paddleboarding. Up until she was 70 years old, she stayed away from weight training and never believed in having an instructor. “I never liked anyone telling me what to do,” she said half-jokingly. “I found out that I was really wrong and that my strength and my wellness and everything I have now, I really owe to strength training and weights.”

Katzmark exercises six times a week, and she encourages others around her age to do the same in order to maintain structure and prevent bone and muscle decay. simple, you can progress yourself from sit to stand to squat to stand and maybe even squat to stand holding an object.

First and foremost, clients who are at risk due to a weakened skeletal system will need the support of their dietary intake to guide their body back into balance. While a consistent and methodical exercise plan will help develop and promote the person’s body through this conditioning process, it will not show the same amount of support unless backed up by a calculated nutrition plan.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation rea firms my belie s in the importance o ollowing exercise recommendations to the general population but is of greater importance to the at-risk or diagnosed osteoporosis community.

A weekly exercise program designed to improve posture, hip and back strength, balance and functional movement is crucial to keeping this population safe from unnecessary fractures while providing greater confidence to per orm activities o daily living.

No matter where you are in your aging process, start incorporating your six pillars sooner than later.

On the Road Again Dana Point Couple Downsizes for the Ultimate Road Trip LILLIAN BOYD

bout a year ago, Alan Wickstrom, formerly of Dana Point, sold nearly everything he owned.

After the passing of his longtime colleague, he felt it was time to sell his business. Then came the sale of his house and vehicles.

“The house sold four days after we put it on the market,” Wickstrom said. “Everything happened so fast. We’ve been on an adventure ever since, and we don’t regret it one bit.”

Alan and his wife, Liz, bought a Ford F-350 RV and have been traveling the country for the past year. Their travels have taken them to places such as Austin, New Orleans, Virginia Beach, Ann Arbor and cities in between. Their visits last anywhere between one to three weeks.

“I feel so blessed that my wife has been on board. This has been an extraordinary way to see our country. We’ve had the best time,” Alan said, adding that one of her conditions was for

the RV to come with two restrooms—a feature that he says has been a saving grace.

The Wickstroms purchased a membership for Thousand Trails, a timeshare service for RV travelers. The membership allows them access to more than 190 sites all over the country.

Their travels have offered opportunities to see wildlife, such as wild burros and manatees, and to e plore fields o sun lowers in St. roi , Wisconsin.

“We spent Christmas Day at an RV campsite in the Keys with dozens of strangers in 80-degree weather,” Liz said. “It was the best time.

I’m amazed at how gracious and welcoming the RV community is.”

The Wickstroms say “RVers” have gone out of their way to help each other in moments of need, like when the couple faced flooding in Virginia Beach, or the times they’ve arrived to their site at nighttime.

come out of the woodworks with flashlights to help us park. If the RV needs any repairs, other campers help each other with fi ing or direct each other on where to go. We’ve been so lucky,” Alan said.

The Wickstroms encountered a problem in Ann Arbor after Liz lost vision in her right eye and had to stay in the area for seven weeks.

“It just so happened that we were in close proximity to the Kellogg Eye Center, a worldrenowned ophthalmology care center,” Liz said. “I was able to get the surgery I needed to restore my sight. Considering all the remote areas we’ve stayed at or traveled through, we were so fortunate.”

The Wickstroms, along with their beagle and Chihuahua-beagle mix, don’t quite know where their travels will take them next.

“We’re in Parker, Arizona, right now, looking at the Colorado River. Next week, we’ll be headed to Southern California to see family,” Alan said. “After that, we’re thinking of heading back ast. e don t know where specifically, but that’s part of the adventure.”

Secrets to a Long-Lasting Marriage

n today’s world, many young couples are looking to their elders and past generations for advice on how to maintain a long-lasting marriage. In a time in which 40 to 50 percent of married couples in the U.S. divorce, and fewer people are getting married or are choosing to marry later in life, the tradition of staying together until death do us part can seem a little . . . gloomy. But, how beautiful and reassuring it is when you run into a couple who have made it 30, 40 or even 50 years or more.

The question begs to be asked, how do you do it? We talked with several local couples who have surpassed more than a few anniversaries together, on what their secrets are for a longlasting marriage.

“Love, common goals and interests, along with many other things, have kept us married for 35 years and still going,” San Clemente resident James Hamilton said of he and his wife, Gayle.

Scott and Diana Schmitt of San Juan Capistrano have been married 33 years.

“To me, my marriage to Diana is the best

thing that has ever happened. I believe a strong marriage is built on consistent niceties and support over time,” said Scott. “Chains do not hold a marriage together. It’s threads... hundreds of tiny threads which sew people together through the years. I have a wonderful seamstress,” he said.

Dana Point residents Ted and Mary Kay Bowersox met during their sophomore year of college and have now been married 47 years.

“We think having a common background (of faith and values) has been very instrumental in our relationship,” the couple said in an email

they wrote together.

They added, “Mutual respect is always important. Arguments have been very few over the last 50 years, but if you ever have one, try to make up before you go to bed, to get it behind you.”

San Juan Capistrano’s John Bates and his wife, Judy, have been married 61 years.

Bates said, “I believe one of the secrets to our successful marriage is the total trust and mutual support Judy and I have given to our marriage. We are sincerely devoted to each other.”

ADDRESSING OSTEOPOROSIS

steoporosis is often called the “silent disease.” Until a fracture occurs, we are often ignorant of its existence.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) states that after the age of 50, one in two women will have an osteoporotic fracture, while one in four men are also likely to have it. A scary statistic, but the fact is that osteoporosis is generally preventable and absolutely treatable.

This being said, how can we help ourselves at this stage in the game?

We must address risk factors such as family history, a slight frame, early menopause and any fracture after 50. Your doctor will likely recommend a bone density test (DXA), which can uncover the health of your bones.

While a diet rich in wholesome grains, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruit, lean proteins and healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocado) is recommended for all, making sure you are getting appropriate calories, protein, calcium and vitamin D is paramount to prevent both sarcopenia (muscle loss) and osteoporosis (bone loss).

If you tend to miss the mark with food, supplementation can fill in the gaps. The NOF website provides an easy-to-use calcium calculator to help determine your specific calcium supplementation needs.

With regards to vitamin D, it is suggested that the 25-hydroxyvitamin D level in your blood is tested to determine if adequate, and if not, supplementation dosage can be provided. It is important to understand that there is no regulation on supplements of any kind in the U.S. I highly recommend that you look for the “USP” verified mark on your supplements, or other third-party testing, to make sure the contents match the label.

HEARING BETTER FOR A HAPPY LIFE

H

earing loss is something that eventually will affect a large percentage of us.

One-third of Americans between the ages of 65 and 75 have some hearing loss, according to the Mayo Clinic. That number increases to about half for those older than 75.

The symptoms of hearing loss are pretty simple, beginning with the muffling o speech or other sounds and di ficulty understanding words, especially with background noise.

For a lot o olks, the di ficulty in treating hearing loss is the failure to accept that you have the hearing loss at all. It may be easy to put the blame on other people not speaking clearly, but if it is happening enough, it may be time to see a doctor and take a hearing test.

The National Institute on Aging recommends seeing your doctor if you have trouble hearing over the phone, find it hard to follow conversations when two or more people are talking, ask people to repeat what they are saying, need to turn up the TV volume too loud for others or can’t understand when women and children speak to you.

The test is a series of beeps at different frequencies to determine the degree of hearing loss.

According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, there are three types of hearing loss: conductive, sensorineural and mixed.

Conductive happens when sounds cannot reach the inner ear due to earwax, fluid or a punctured eardrum. With conductive hearing loss, soft sounds may be hard to hear and loud sounds may be muffled. This can be treated.

Sensorineural comes from inner-ear damage. Soft sounds also may be hard to hear and loud sounds may be unclear. This is the most common type of permanent hearing loss, and hearing aids may help.

Mixed is a combination of both.

If hearing aids are needed, there are two main types.

The cheaper and smaller kinds are a sort o amplification system. This simply takes the noise and increases the volume, but it doesn’t help distinguish the sounds. These can be found in an easily concealed in-ear variety or over-ear variety.

The other is more expensive and larger, but it does help distinguish sounds. These are usually over the ear and are assisted by computer chips to help with the sound quality.

inding the right care for an aging loved one can come with overwhelming options, particularly when he or she faces a serious illness.

Hospice and palliative care both provide comfort for a patient.

Palliative care can begin at diagnosis and in conjunction with treatment. Hospice care begins after the treatment for serious illness or disease has stopped and it is clear that the patient will not survive the illness. Hospice is typically offered when medical treatment is no longer an option or if a client has six or fewer months to live.

Robert B. Kilmurray

Robert B. Kilmurray, 80, passed away on Thursday, September 12th. He fought a rare type of skin cancer (Merkel Cell Carcinoma) for 18 months, & died peacefully, while receiving hospice care, with his wife Diane at his side.

Born on January 14th, 1939 to Howard & Helen Kilmurray, Bob grew up in Alta Loma & graduated from Chaffey Union High School in Ontario in 1956, Occidental College in 1960, and was a retired Commander, US Naval Reserve.

As a real estate broker and property manager in San Clemente for 30 years, Bob contributed regularly to the community, as Kiwanis Club President, FAM volunteer driver, and as a member of San Clemente Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and choir member.

He is survived by his wife Diane, children Jennifer Perry, James Coil, Jim Kilmurray, Clint Coil, & their respective spouses & grandchildren & by siblings Jean MacCalla, Jim Kilmurray & three nephews.

Memorial service will be on Saturday, October 5th at 11am at San Clemente Presbyterian Church. Mexican food and ice cream immediately following in the Fellowship Hall. im Messina refuses to be pigeonholed into any one particular genre or style of music.

As a founding member of 1960s country rock group Poco, he and his fellow bandmates, including Richie Furay, have become widely regarded as the pioneers for the genre.

However, for Messina, who was the other half of Loggins & Messina in the ’70s and played with Furay in Buffalo Springfield during the ’60s, he wants to “continue to be an artist of the past, present and future.”

Throughout his years of performing live for audiences, Messina has maintained a set list that includes hits from all of his previous musical acts, using only a fraction of his shows for his own solo works.

But, during a phone call from his Tennessee home, Messina told Dana Point Times that he wants to incorporate more of his own solo material in 2020, including songs from Under a Mojito Moon: Part 1, his last studio album from 2009 that he recorded with a flamenco guitar.

“I want to move forward in 2020 and start bringing in my solo works and songs,” Messina said. “And again, to get away from—if I may say this—getting away from the country rock image.”

Messina adds that as his musical career moves into the 2020s, he’s finding it difficult to hang his hat on one particular style of music, especially considering his catalogue of works include rock, country, folk, and Spanish.

Messina got his start with Buffalo Springfield in 1966 as the recording engineer for the band’s second album, Buffalo Springfield Again. He was later tapped to produce the group’s follow-up albums, as well as replace Bruce Palmer as bassist.

When the band split in 1968, he and Furay formed Poco, going away from the folk

rock sound of Buffalo and creating that country rock vibe they’ve become known for. And in 1970, Messina started writing music with Kenny Loggins.

Messina related his current feelings toward his music to the way he felt when he and Loggins formed their rock pop duo, Loggins & Messina.

“The music that I find where I’m at in my life is not country rock; that’s part of my past,” he said. “I think if you move forward to Loggins & Messina, you’ll hear where I was evolving away from Poco, musically. Evolving as a songwriter, as a lyricist, as an instrumentalist.”

Messina later felt a similar way in 2009, when he wrote Under a Mojito Moon, which drew influences from Spanish and Cuban melodies.

With such a vast catalogue of tunes to choose from, Messina acknowledges that he plays what the audience has mainly come to hear during shows, which are many hits from his previous works with Springfield, Poco and Loggins.

Sprinkled into the set will also be some acoustic jams of his. But he notes that the last part of the night is where he likes to get people grooving.

“If we take an intermission, we’ll take a break there, and the next part of the set, for me, is really taking the energy and moving it at an exponential level to where by the end of the show, they’re up and out of their seats and rocking and moving,” he said.

Messina will be bringing those grooves and moves to San Juan Capistrano when he plays The Coach House next month.

Tickets to see Messina on Thursday, Oct. 3, are $39.50. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the show scheduled to start at 8 p.m.

GUEST OPINION: Our Home Port by James Lenthall

Fair Seas, Dad Editor’s Note: Former Dana Point Times columnist James Lenthall makes a special return in this week’s edition to dedicate “Our Home Port” to the legacy of his late father, Jim Lenthall.

I

t’s one of my very earliest memories, a foundational memory, recorded by the raw mind of a 2-, maybe 3-year-old, fogged slightly by nearly 50 subsequent years of life and trivia, but certain nonetheless.

My father and I row a small raft through the barren west end of Dana Point Harbor, before new docks would draw hundreds of boats to their new home. The West Marina was vast and empty then, spare one or two old fishing trawlers anchored overnight. I recall that we were fishing, though I don’t remember catching anything. But the magic of those serene moments with my dad in our brand new Dana Point Harbor not only forged a lifelong memory, but serves as the deepest roots of my family’s life built around this harbor.

Dad moved his first sailboat into Dana Point Harbor in 1971, becoming one of its very first tenants. He developed into an accomplished local sailor, crowding his den with trophies. I sometimes accompanied him on those early local races, though I served mostly as ballast. In 1977, my father became the first Dana Point Harbor skipper to sail the Transpac race from California to Hawaii. Those were the days of dead reckoning and celestial navigation; he didn’t win, but he finished the unusually brutal race and counts among his proudest moments seeing Honolulu come over the horizon precisely when and where he predicted it. He and his

sailboat—the Outward Bound—became legends in our harbor. Five Outward Bounds later, the Lenthalls are still here.

It is impossible to reminisce on my childhood—or any stretch of my life, really—without visions and tales of Dana Point Harbor. And my two boys, accomplished sailors themselves (it skipped a generation), have been raised along the same path that my dad set us on when he first moved us to Dana Point and parked his boat here in ’71. I have little doubt that our adventures on the current Outward Bound shaped my boys’ earliest memories. We have centered our lives around this place, we built our family here, our greatest ocean adventures were based from here. And, with enormous gratitude for all Dana Point Harbor has blessed us with, we strive to give a little back.

In 2006, my dad and I participated in our first community workshop on the Harbor Revitalization Plan. It was a raucous event, with an energetic crowd peppering the facilitators with tough questions OUR HOME PORT and opinions. My dad

It would be my first act of harbor advocacy among countless more in subsequent years. It was my first step on the path that would bring me to the board of the Dana Point Boaters Association in 2011, eventually ascending to president of the organization, which led to establishing the Dana Point Harbor Advisory Board, which serves effectively as our harbor commission. These two organizations have made a profound impact on the future of our harbor on behalf of our community. And so often in these roles I play, I am inspired by my dad’s legacy, and I strive to make him proud.

alone in the empty marina, not catching a thing. For me, that day planted the seed for my life in this harbor, and all I try to do to deliver its successful future to the next generation. As my dad did for me.

Whatever little legacy I leave behind in this place will be an extension of his.

month—Friday, Aug. 16, at 10:22 p.m., to be exact. Dad’s final year was spent largely contending with his ailing health and the mounting complications that cascaded in on him with relentless savagery. Rare were the days when he could muster the energy to leave his home. But when he did, it was always to our harbor, if only to spend a few moments resting on the deck of our boat, or nibbling at some prime rib at the yacht club. And he wouldn’t dare miss the festivities of the Fourth of July, his favorite day of the year in our harbor.

And as it turned out, his very last.

I write these closing words on the deck of the Outward Bound, moored in a slip very near where my earliest memories were forged. I imagine a dad and his boy trolling a fishing line from their raft,

High Five Defense leads DHHS football in 5-0 start

nother week goes by, and Dana Hills football continues to extend its school-record start to the season.

Before last week’s game, Dana Hills coach Phil Skinner told the Dana Point Times that the Dolphins’ 4-0 start to the season was the school record. A reader mentioned that the 1980 Dana Hills team also started 4-0, but following a 30-15 win at Irvine, these 5-0 Dolphins are believed to have the official school record to themselves.

Official records or not, the turnaround of this Dana Hills program from recent seasons of three, two, one and zero wins to this 5-0 start and a No. 3 ranking in Division 12 is an incredible feat.

At the midway point, with one nonleague game left at Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach on Friday, Sept. 27, it’s as good a time as any to dive into the numbers of this Dana Hills team to illustrate what has the Dolphins on this unprecedented winning pace.

The defensive line is the group that stands out when watching with the naked eye, and the numbers also jump off the page.

Dana Hills has amassed 29 sacks in five games this season, including senior defensive end Liam Boersma’s 15.5 sacks, which continue to lead the nation, according to MaxPreps. Through five games last season, the Dolphins had only 10 sacks and finished the season with 11.

season, after just more than five per game through the first five games last season.

The D-line has also stepped up its efforts against the running game.

Through five games, opponents are managing just fewer than 49 yards rushing per game against Dana Hills. Through five games in 2018, the number was nearly double that average, at 98.25 rushing yards allowed per game. That 2018 average jumped to 154 yards allowed per game after 300-yard rushing efforts by Ocean View and Trabuco Hills.

Don’t expect a similar performance by the Seahawks this Friday, as Ocean View is averaging just more than 106 yards rushing per game this season, compared

to the nearly 248 yards per game last season. In addition, the Dana Hills front should make for a more competitive game than the 38-0 Ocean View win last season.

The Dolphins’ defense has also forced two turnovers in each game for a total of 10, including seven interceptions. Dana Hills also forced 10 turnovers through five games last season, but half of those came in one game against Saddleback.

Offensively, the Dolphins are running the ball at a nearly identical pace, with 131 yards per game this season, compared to a 133yard rushing average through five in 2018.

The big jump is in the passing game, from 141 yards per game through the first

five games of 2018 to 243 yards per game this season. Credit that to an increase in completion percentage from senior quarterback Zack Saavedra and two big games by sophomore Bo Kelly while Saavedra dealt with a leg bruise.

Dana Hills can continue to raise its profile with a road win at 3-1 Ocean View on Friday, but the Dolphins’ true measuring stick will come when league play begins on Oct. 4 at home against Laguna Hills.

Dana Hills maintains its goal is a playoff berth, but while this record start is something to highlight, the Dolphins need to carry this momentum into league for a chance to achieve that goal. DP

Surfing on a Higher Level The story of a surf club in Mozambique, the Positive Vibe Warrior Foundation and the Pope

n Friday, Sept. 27, at Talega Golf Club, the Positive Vibe Warrior Foundation will host its annual charity golf tournament. Masterminded by San Clemente brothers Bryan and Bernie Wohlfarth, the event’s been sold out for months, and the list of supporting sponsors is a virtual Who’s Who of both local businesses and the global surf community.

More than just the annual Stoke-O-Rama surf contest—which is coming up at the end of October—the Positive Vibe Warriors, founded by local pro surfers Dane, Patrick and Tanner Gudauskas, are endeavoring to make the ocean a better place to surf through their signature surfboard drives, support for junior lifeguard programs and commitment to water safety initiatives.

And next week, when the turf from the tourney finally settles, friend of the Positive Vibe Warriors Tom Hewitt from Durban, South Africa, will be touching down in town. Plainly put, Hewitt’s the man. He founded and runs the group Surfers Not Street Children, which uses surfing as a way to mentor disenfranchised youth throughout Africa. The program has been wildly successful, and as previously reported here, was supported by the Positive Vibe Warriors’ “Can’t Steal Our Vibe” surfboard drive, which amassed more

than 700 boards and delivered them to South Africa.

One of Hewitt’s new projects has been the launch of the Tofu Surf Club in Mozambique—and the Gudauskas brothers aren’t the only ones supporting the cause.

“Last week, the Pope was visiting Maputo in Mozambique, and we got the callup! We took four people from Tofo Surf Club on a road trip,” Hewitt explained when we spoke a few weeks ago.

Of course, Pope Francis doesn’t just pop in—he’s the Pope. There’s a backstory.

“The story is actually quite funny,” Hewitt said. “A few years back, when Kelly Slater broke his foot at J-Bay, we were due to host him in Durban. Plans changed, obviously, but Todd Glaser and

Alek Parker came up to Durban to shoot with us for Kelly’s Continuance 2 edit.

They actually gave us a heap of time in that edit, which was super generous.”

“Awhile later, I got a call from a guy named Matias Anton, a surfer from Argentina. He worked for an organization called Scholas Occurrentes and had seen the edit. He was keen to explore a partnership between Scholas and Surfers Not Street Children. What I did not get at the time was that Pope Francis had started that organization before he was Pope and was still the figurehead.”

From a phone call out of the blue, Hewitt and Anton continued to communicate and develop the relationship between the Pope’s group and Surfers Not Street Children.

“At the time, we were looking to open our project called Tofo Surf Club in Tofo, Mozambique. So, we decided to do the program together. Only when Matias asked me to come to Rome to brief the Holy Father did it occur to me just how involved the Pope would be,” Hewitt said.

“Or just how stoked he was with the idea of surfing as a vehicle of positive change.”

The Pope and Scholas signed an agreement with Hewitt, and the project officially started in May 2018. The Tofu Surf Club was launched and is flourishing today. The challenges are somewhat different than what Surfers Not Street Children faces in places like Durban, but the mission is the same.

“Like Durban, it’s a fusion of surfing and mentorship. Although the kids in Tofo are not street kids, they do live with a set of real challenges that we are able to help them address,” Hewitt explained. “The kids are frothing, and the program is having real impact.”

All of this led to the recent meeting with the Holy See. “It was such a rad event, and Pope Francis is awesome,” Hewitt said. “Big heart for the poor, but also seems to love the idea of surfing! So, we’re stoked to keep this awesome partnership with Scholas Occurrentes going and develop the program for the kids of Tofo, Mozambique. . . . Who’d have thought the Pope would be so pumped on surfing?”

It’s pretty remarkable to think that a group of local surfers from San Clemente has helped play a role, however big or small, in not just sharing surfing with those less fortunate and empowering a new generation, but that the impact of their actions could reach all the way to the Vatican.

And when everyone tees off on Friday at Talega Golf Club, of course, good times will be had by all, but like a good swell, the ripple effect from passing the positivity will extend around the world. DP

But his competitive results aren’t really what this week’s honor is about, as good as they may be. We’re shining a light on 9-year-old Tanner because of the positive example he’s setting in and out of the water. Fired up and stoked on where surfing is taking him, he’s also loving the friends he’s making and relationships the beach life is allowing him to forge. Tanner recently asked his mom to reach out to us so that he could nominate a couple of his friends for Grom of the Week honors. That speaks volumes about his character and how much he cares for his crew. Of course, we’re loving Tanner’s recommendations, and you’ll be seeing his friends here in the Grom of the Week spot in the weeks to come, but the selflessness and consideration of others really resonated, and we thought it was important to share what an amazing ambassador of aloha he’s growing into.
