Five things Dana Point should know this week

Consideration of Story Poles Ordinance Returns to Planning Commission THE LATEST: On Sept. 4, City Council once again discussed the topic of story poles, as Councilmember Debra Lewis requested that the Council direct staff to write a story pole ordinance to be returned to Council for review and approval by no later than Oct. 3.

Story poles are used to depict elevations and silhouettes of a proposed structure or an addition to an existing building. They are intended to aid neighbors, staff personnel and members of the decision making bodies in their evaluation of a project application. While computer modeling is beneficial for aesthetics and determining how well a proposed project blends with a neighborhood, story poles provide a visual tool to allow neighbors and decision making bodies to evaluate, mass, bulk, volume and impact on a neighborhood.

Lewis claimed, and was supported by a number of public speakers, that story poles allow the public to be aware of the impact of potential construction to their communities, and encourage community awareness.

Mayor Pro Tem Joe Muller and Mayor Richard Viczorek opposed the proposal, reminding the Council that story poles have already been considered and sent to the Planning Commission for consideration by the Council previously. There, they were deemed unnecessary.

A large number of Home Owner Association’s (HOA) throughout Dana Point already mandate the use of story poles.

WHAT’S NEXT: In the end, Councilmember John Tomlinson was the swing vote, deciding to allow the Planning Commission to reconsider their position on a city-wide story pole ordinance. The Planning Commission’s decision will be reported back to City Council where a decision will be made on whether to instruct staff to craft an ordinance. The seat was made available after current commissioner Kimberly Williams announced her decision to step down and take on the role of ex-oficio member. Other candidates included Loretta (Kaye) Crippen, JoAnn Christman and Dr. Lydia Ledesma-Reese.

City Council Names 2018-2019 Dana Point Youth Board Appointments THE LATEST: During their meeting on Sept. 4, the Dana Point City Council appointed seven board members and two members-at-large to the Dana Point Youth Board.

Save San Onofre Coalition Meeting Addresses ‘Threats’ to Trestles THE LATEST: One of South Orange County’s largest treasures, the Trestles surfing area at San Onofre State Park, has been fought over for decades, if not longer.

Since the idea of putting a toll road through Trestles was envisioned in the early and mid-2000s, multiple environmental, recreational and governmental agencies have weighed in on the land, which is currently leased to the California State Parks by the U.S. Department of the Navy until at least 2021.

The plans of The Toll Road administrators, the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA), are to construct a toll road to extend its 241 route and connect to I-5 as well as other traffic relief options in South Orange County. Those proposals include options to build the highway through the middle of San Clemente as well as possible expansions of lanes on I-5.

The meeting allowed members of the public to discuss some of the issues surrounding the area. The two organizations are heavily active in ocean water protection efforts.

In 2016, SSOC entered into a settlement agreement and a protective agreement with the TCA after a 15-year battle to stave off the construction of a toll road through Trestles, a surf area located just south of San Clemente. Following that, the city of San Clemente, as well as residents of The Reserve Maintenance Corporation, an HOA in San Clemente, filed lawsuits against the protective agreement.

The city’s lawsuit was filed in an effort to nullify the protection agreement, which

include areas of the San Mateo Campground and lands within the San Onofre State Park, as well as Trestles. In theory, this would give the TCA more options for a toll road rather than the proposals now being studied that include constructing the road through the middle of San Clemente.

The Reserve’s lawsuit seeks to require the TCA to go through a public process that involves more opportunity and outreach to those who could be affected by toll road construction. It also seeks to nullify the protective agreement as well as the settlement agreement.

SSOC members contend that undoing the protective agreement could threaten Trestles.

Neither the city nor The Reserve Association wants a toll road through Trestles, either, but they do want to protect the homes currently under duress by the proposed construction.

The TCA is currently reviewing environmental impact documents to finalize a draft environmental impact report, which is slated to be completed and ready for public comment by mid-2019.

WHAT’S NEXT: According to the settlement agreement, SSOC members are prohibited from commenting on or opposing any toll roads proposed to be built outside of the protective area.

Part of the original settlement agreement was that the SSOC would receive a $28 million fund for mitigation, habitat revitalization and environmental efforts. The projects the fund would be used for must be approved by the 12 nonprofit members of the SSOC as well as California state and federal agencies. —Eric Heinz

Jurado, Barcroft Honored at City Council for VIPS Volunteer Service THE LATEST: Veteran Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS) Manny Jurado and Dr. William Barcroft were recognized by City Council and Dana Point Police Services staff for their combined effort of more than 10,000 volunteer service hours.

WHAT’S NEXT: Upon receiving their recognition from the City of Dana Point and Orange County Sheriff’s Department Dana Point Police Services, Jurado and Barcroft both spoke highly of their years of volunteering.

“It’s so nice to feel as if we are still able to contribute to the community,” Jurado said.

“Really, it’s continuing my education,” Barcroft laughed.

San Juan Creek Levee Improvement Project: Re-Opening of San Juan Creek Trail The San Juan Creek Trail and bikeway along the west side of the San Juan Creek flood control channel is expected to re-open soon, as construction crews will be finishing the improvements to the levee on the west side. This will mark the completion of construction along the west side, while crews will continue performing levee improvements along the east side of the San Juan Creek flood control channel.

The anticipated completion of the overall project is unavailable until the remaining east side levee improvements finish between Stonehill Drive and Camino Capistrano. Current project work days are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group Celebrates 10th Anniversary The Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group is celebrating providing what they call the “Gold Standard” of support for the Marines and Sailors of the Fighting Fifth, Wounded Warriors of Battalion West, Camp Pendleton and their families since 2008.

Recently, at Bella Collina Golf Club the 10th Anniversary Gold Standard Celebration of the Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group (DPSG) was attended by over 100 people who had contributed in some way to the group’s success since its inception in 2008.

A highlight of the evening was a toast from Colonel A.J. Munro, presently the Bravo Commander for the Fifth Marine Regiment, who was joined by Colonel Willy Buhl, USMC, (Ret) and Colonel Stewart Navarre, USMC, (Ret). Colonel Munro cut the ceremonial anniversary cake with a sword, with the first pieces of cake going to the most senior Marine present and the youngest Marine present as is the tradition of the Marine Corps birthday celebration.

Later in the evening, resolutions written honoring DPSG were presented from Congressman Darrell Issa, State Assemblyman Bill Brough and State Senator Pat Bates, Diane Harkey of the Board of Equalization, OC Supervisor Lisa Bartlett and Dana Point Mayor Rick Viczorek.

The term “Gold Standard” was coined early on by Lt. Gen. Larry Nicholson. He used the term in describing how DPSG, with the support of the people of Dana Point, set a very high standard for the care shown to the warriors of the Fighting Fifth, saying it was far beyond anything he’d ever seen at any other Marine Corps base. State Sen. Patricia Bates Eyes Legislation on Substance Abuse Centers Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) recently presented Assembly bill 3162, co-authored along with Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) and the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) that would clarify laws and help the DHCS effectively issue and manage the issuance of licenses for alcoholism and drug abuse residential treatment facilities.

AB 3162 passed out of the California State Senate and the Assembly on Aug. 29.

AB 3162 mandates a provisional, oneyear initial probationary period for residential treatment facilities and clarify in law where treatment is occurring.

Bates stated in her press release, “This measure is crucial and will strengthen current law to protect patients who are receiving treatment at these facilities. I’ve

heard from many constituents and read the horror stories in the media about the exploitation of vulnerable patients. Some of these residential treatment facilities have good intentions and substantial records of helping addicts break the vicious cycle of addiction, but others appear to prey on patients. I’m proud to co-author this measure because it would provide clarification to current policies.”

AB 3162 is supported by several associations and municipalities, including the Association of California Cities-Orange County (ACC-OC); the cities of Aliso Viejo, Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Oceanside and Vista.

With election season upon the city, the Civic Association will be holding a candidate forum. 2018 City Council Election Coverage DANA POINT TIMES

eading up to the Dana Point City Council election on Nov. 6, the Dana Point Times is publishing six questions, one each week, that we’ve asked each individual who qualified for the ballot. Be sure to look for next week’s edition when we publish the second question. The list of candidates is published according to the random alphabet the California Secretary of State recently drew.

WEEK 1

If elected, what do you see as your top three priority issues and why?

DISTRICT 1

JOE MULLER Public safety and protecting the quality of life in Dana Point is my paramount concern and top priority. Without it nothing else matters. Many of our business owners reside in Dana Point demonstrating a large commitment and investment in our community. Continuing and even increasing the level of public safety we currently enjoy allows new restaurants and businesses to open. A high level of public safety allows us to engage and help the homeless in town.

Through our liaisons and full time outreach we can help the homeless get into the programs they need, get them off the street and assimilate back into the community.

JOSEPH “JOE” JAEGER First, we need to take a more proactive approach in addressing the proliferation of residential recovery facilities and sober living homes. Their proliferation is affecting our quality of life and property values. Secondly, we must continue to address the homeless issue. The solution involves funding at the county level. Third, we need to restore fiscal responsibility to the city of Dana Point. In nine of the last ten years, the city experienced net deficits.

AMY FOELL A. Solutions for rising contract costs with the OC Fire Authority and OC Sheriff Department. Between yearround climate threats and increasing population density, we need top notch services for the safety of Dana Point residents and visitors.

B. Effective management of chronic homelessness. This is a burgeoning public health and safety concern.

C. Smart sustainable development to keep Dana Point a great family destination for visitors and a truly special place to live for residents.

DISTRICT 2

MARK L. MCGINN A. Public Safety- Although our population has remained stable, acts of crime and calls for service have increased in the past few years. Our residents and visitors must feel safe in Dana Point.

B. Sober Living Homes- The growth of these facilities in Orange County and Dana Point have increased due to our location. These businesses operate in residential areas and some violate ordinances and operate outside of the law. City government must have tighter control and enforce code violations.

C. Homelessness- Good work has been started here by the homeless task force. We owe it to our residents and to the homeless to continue to strive to eliminate this problem altogether.

J. SCOTT SCHOEFFEL Public safety is job one. We must feel safe and secure in our homes and businesses. Second, we must stem any further decline in resident amenities and services. Over the past two years weekend code enforcement has been reduced and the number of summer concerts has been slashed. We must restore what we have lost. Third, we must revitalize our Lantern District and Doheny Village areas to enhance resident amenities and increase city revenue.

RICHARD A. VICZOREK The core functions of government are to provide public safety and security, maintain and improve our public spaces and infrastructure, and create the conditions for economic growth while being fiscally prudent. I will continue to ensure our Police Services are fully funded and supported while balancing the budget, work to keep taxes and regulations to a minimum, and keep our parks and roads beautiful and functional. This year, the United States Marine Corps celebrates the 100-year anniversary of female Marines who pioneered the path of women’s enlistment in the United States Marine Corps and 75 years since the arrival of the first woman based at Camp Pendleton.

The first woman who enlisted in 1918 was Pvt. Opha May Johnson, two years before she would even be legally able to vote.

Capt. Lillian Daly arrived at Camp Pendleton as the first female Marine in March 1943, and six months later an assemblage of 95 women Marines entered on active duty during World War II. The Women Reservists barracks had a fence with a posted Marine bodyguard to discourage the male Marines. Each female Marine was outfitted in “Montezuma Red” lipstick and nail polish developed by Elizabeth Arden to match the cord attached to their uniforms. Women have served in every war, taken the helm in uncharted commands and now proudly have removed the red cord on their uniforms which shows they now stand shoulder to shoulder with fellow male Marine Corp soldiers.

“Women Marines did much more than ‘Free a Man to Fight’ in World War II,” said Faye Jonason, director of the Camp Pendleton Museum. “While Women Reservists primarily performed clerical duties in offices, many served as photographers, aviation mechanics, truck drivers and conducted weapon inventory.” After World War II, Camp Pendleton became a demobilization center for Marines. The women’s commitment through the Korean and Vietnam Wars let Camp Pendleton become the first permanent barracks for Dana Point Times September 7-13, 2018

female Marines in 1969.

Women chipped away at gender barriers when Sgt. Maj. Eleanor Judge became Camp Pendleton’s first female sergeant major in 1980. It wasn’t until 2009 when Ret. Sgt. Maj. Ramona Cook would take her post. The Los Angeles native became a Marine in 1982 after studying behavioral science. The women’s Military Occupational Specialty training remained limited to the communications or radio repair sectors and fewer in the field, Cook recounts.

“I’m extremely proud of women in the Marine Corps today,” Cook said. “If we keep striving at being the best in what we can do, we are opening doors for younger women who are coming behind us and they can do it just as well.”

The National Defense Authorization Act of 1993 repealed the limits of women in flying aircraft combat missions. Sgt. Maj. Valerie A. Camacho, of the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron, needed her parents’ signature to enlist in the Marines at 17 years of age in July 1996. She also worked in the Marine Tactical Air Command Control Center as a drill instructor when she deployed for three years in Iraq.

The Secretary of Defense lifted the ban on women in infantry in 2013 to be exclusively trained at Parris Island, South Carolina, School Of Infantry East.

In March, Camp Pendleton’s School of Infantry West opened to women, according to Capt. Abigail Peterson of the West Office of Communication at Camp Pendleton. In 2016, U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter removed the women’s cap on gender-based restrictions, and three months later the Marine Corps announced they would follow the same policies.

“It’s promising but also a process for things to come to full fruition,” Peterson said. “We are seeing women feel more compelled to complete trainings with the knowledge that the positions and options are open at the end of the tunnel.”

Letters to the Editor DON’T SIGN S.B. 174 INTO LAW JOHN TOROK, San Clemente

Dear Governor Jerry Brown, I urge you to not sign Senate Bill 174!

It is absurd and disgusting that the legislation would even consider such an un-American bill.

On the national level, we are obsessed with election meddling (by Russian, Chinese, etc.) and both parties oppose such activities.

Yet the bill would do exactly this—election meddling by foreigners.

A person, who is not a citizen, is by definition a foreigner and is a guest in our country (some here on visas legally and many here illegally). How dare we allow these non-citizens to manipulate our citizens’ wishes? These non-citizens may have ulterior motives that are not in-line with those who are American citizens. They are foreigners who should not have the right to partake in any governmental affairs. They can, if they wish, communicate their opinions, but until they make a commitment to be part of our society by being a citizen, their only privilege is to voice opinions.

This bill is a slap in the face to American citizens and immigrants, like me, who have taken the effort to become citizens and earn the right to vote.

Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) sent a letter to Mr. Mike Kraman, the CEO of the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA), who receives a total compensation of $412,000, discussing the inaccuracies and misstatements made by the TCA against A.B. 382, the bill that would have defunded the TCA. OCTA called the statements “misleading,” taken out of context and overlooking the regional planning process.

One of the inconsistent statements that the TCA uses, which they even used in the bogus survey they sent out a few months ago, is that population will grow by 250,000 people and traffic will increase by 66 percent. OCTA states: “to be clear the quoted figures are based on future population, housing and employment forecasts for the entire county and assumes no improvements are going to be made anywhere in the county by any agency by 2040…”

OCTA asserts that they will be spending a whopping $42 billion in multimodal transportation projects.

The TCA is a redundant, bloated and untrustworthy agency that must be abolished now.

RESPONSE TO ‘CLIMATE CHANGE IS A HOAX’ CARTER REDISH, San Clemente

Just got finished reading the Aug. 16-22 Letters to the Editor and came across “Man-Made Climate Change is a Hoax” where the author claims that “the greatest hoax of the century” is man-made climate change. To prove the hypothesis, the author references the National Geographic study on polar ice that demonstrates that natural, not human-caused, climate change has occurred throughout history. He challenges anyone to point out one thing on earth that doesn’t naturally change over time. That brings to mind the change in the population of our fragile planet. In 1900, the world had a total population of around 1.6 billion. Today the total world population is nearing 7.7 billion. All the associated services and industries we have created to serve our needs, providing fuel to run our transportation and energy infrastructure, agriculture to grow our food, chemicals to meet our many needs, pharmaceutical companies to develop the medicines needed or don’t need, and all this expansion by humans, through our pollution, is bringing our planet to the breaking point and to the point of no return. Species are becoming extinct at a frightening rate, new islands of plastic waste are being created in our oceans, and our forests are being destroyed. But that’s all “natural change,” according to the author, so we shouldn’t worry. Perhaps in 1,000 years the future inhabitants of our planet, whoever they might be, will unearth, in that portion of our continent that was once called California, the fossils exposed in the desert sand, the bones of the humans who once covered the planet but went extinct due to their own

shortsightedness, greed and stupidity.

IT’S TIME TO CURB GREENHOUSE GASES WITH BETTER SUPERMARKET DECISIONS LOBART IKLE, Laguna Beach

With scorching heat and raging wildfires in the west and torrential downpours and massive flooding in the east, global warming is not just about a gentle sea rise any more. These tragic consequences of dumping greenhouse gases into our atmosphere, call for drastic remedies. For starters, we should re-join the Paris Climate Accords and actually become a world leader in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. One of the most effective ways is by changing our diet. Yes, that. Last fall, Oxford University’s prestigious Food Climate Research Network concluded that solving the global warming catastrophe requires a massive shift to a plant-based diet. A 2010 United Nations report blamed animal agriculture for 19 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, 70 percent of freshwater use, and 38 percent of land use. Carbon dioxide is emitted by burning forests to create animal pastures and by transporting animals.

The more damaging methane and nitrous oxide are released from digestive tracts of cattle and from animal waste cesspools, respectively. In an environmentally sustainable world, we must replace meat and dairy products in our diet by vegetables, fruits, and grains, just as we replace fossil fuels by wind, solar, and other pollution-free energy sources. Let's start with our next supermarket visit.

ne whole month before Halloween season begins and we have a release of a retro, atmospheric horror-drama: The Little Stranger. Gothic horror is a film genre like movie musicals or romance epics, where the relevancy and following haven’t been fully alive since the mid-20th century. Similarly with Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak (2015) which was fine, but a complete dud with audiences. Unfortunately, Lenny Abrahamson’s new feature will have a similar reaction.

In the late 1940s, Dr. Faraday (Domhnall Gleeson) is called in to treat a new patient at an old English mansion he just happened to visit as a child with his mother. Over time he becomes friendly with the family including Mrs. Ayres (Charlotte Rampling), her daughter Caroline (Ruth Wilson) and son Roddy (Will Poulter). The family, and even the house it appears, is haunted by the memory of the eldest daughter Sarah (Tipper Seifert-Cleveland), who died tragically as a child.

The Little Stranger is adapted by Lucinda Coxon from Sarah Waters’ best-selling novel. Abrahamson seems to be a director like David Gordon Green, with no particular theme or subject preference for his storytelling. From the quirky, amusing indie Frank (2014), to the claustrophobic drama Room (2015), and now a creepy mystery. Fortunately, Abrahamson is good with variety, and Gleeson, Wilson and Poulter still shine as three of the most interesting UK actors out there. The pacing is a very slow burn that doesn’t exactly have a payoff and won’t work for some viewers. There are no jump scares or monsters, but bleak characters and a lot of angsty dialogue. hat better way to celebrate rich friendships, civic service and children’s charity than a noholds-barred smorgasbord on the beach.

This Saturday, Sept. 8, the Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Club will host their ninth annual Lobster Fest at Doheny State Beach.

Karl Linhardt has been in the club for five years and is currently the club’s president. He believes that although many Rotary clubs celebrate with Lobster Fest, the Dana Point gathering is one of a kind.

sters live on site,” Linhardt shared. “We’ve had people come from all over the country specifically for this event. A lot of people are friends and neighbors of our rotary club’s members, but we have open arms to anyone that wants to come by.”

The event is the Rotary Club’s primary

fundraiser, the funds from which will be used in a variety of children’s charities including Ocean Institute programming, the Doheny State Beach Interpretative Association and the Dana Point 5th Regiment Marine Support Group.

from the Dana Point Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Dana Point #9934 will be grilling tri-tip.

In addition to ticket sales, which are available for pre-sale and at the door and range from $75-$150, funds are raised through on-site casino activities.

For entertainment, Beach Buzzard and Jaw will be playing live music throughout the night.

Lindhardt wanted to remind all interested in attending that Lobster Fest is a fun night for adults to get together and enjoy good company, good food and good music.

He encouraged everyone to drink responsibly and utilize driver services when appropriate.

While “service above self” is the club’s operating mantra, the club says every action they take is driven by guiding principles they call the four-way test. These tests include: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? And will it be beneficial to all concerned?

ing up in and with this community, it’s amazing to hear and see people that I have grown up with to see us evolve. It’s beautiful to now serve their kids weddings and graduations,” Jordan said.

Jordan sourced a lot of their businesses longevity and success to their family employee atmosphere.

“A happy chef means good food,” Jordan said. “I really think that. When you feel it, it shows in the food.”

Jordan said that the Richey family holds an unadulterated passion for food, creativity and creating community throughout their dynasty.

“We’ve done amazing things,” Jordan said, “but what we do, you won’t find in a

corporation.

Jordan and Diane each independently voiced the pride they hold in their long-time employees, and voiced that without them none of their success would be possible.

“Nice guys don’t always finish first, sometimes they finish last. That might be a saying, and people can feel how they want about it, but we’re going to sail that ship.

We are going to a happy place that sells memories, and you can’t sell memories if you don’t feel it yourself,” Jordan said.

The Richey family said they are anticipating their continued involvement and are excited for new opportunities including changes to their brick and mortar location as well as new opportunities for Diane’s creative endeavors.

hen discussing mental health, many of us have ideas and perceptions but not a clear idea about when to seek help. Culture and society contribute to misconceptions and stigma surrounding mental health symptoms and seeking mental health care.

At the Wellness & Prevention Center, it is our job to educate the community about mental health, available services, and how these services could best meet the needs of families and individuals.

A lot of times when we hear the words “mental health,” we automatically equate that with some form of lunacy. That is far from what mental health and wellness are all about. As we move through life, it is guaranteed that most people will encounter different stressors at different stages in their lives. Grief, loss, birth, marriage and finances are all examples of life events that may bring happiness or distress, and there is no telling how these stressors may affect our mental health.

When I train volunteers at Laura’s House, I find myself spending a lot of time debunking the myths of what a person experiencing symptoms of the diseases of mental health looks like.

At the beginning of my presentation, I usually pose this question first. Research

supports that one of five people in my training may be experiencing or treating a symptom of depression or anxiety yet appear to be perfectly healthy.

People who are experiencing symptoms of anxiety, depression or other mental health diseases, tell me how hard it is to admit to a friend or a colleague that they would like help. The fear of someone knowing we are struggling can sometimes hinder us from seeking support or beneficial services.

Additionally, we are bombarded with perfect images via social media.

We are exposed daily to the facets of people’s lives that they want us WELLNESS AND to see, primarily positive messaging that can PREVENTION

By Susan make us feel as though Parmelee we are lacking in some way. It can be difficult to separate reality as opposed to what people want us to believe is true. These comparisons can easily elicit and amplify negative thoughts, feelings and emotions about ourselves.

So, when do I recommend seeking care from a mental health professional?

Quite honestly, any time one is struggling and experiencing symptoms that might include difficulty sleeping, increased irritability, loss of appetite, isolation from friends and prolonged episodes of sadness.

Health insurance is required to cover mental health treatment; however, many rules and restrictions may apply. The Wellness & Prevention Center provides referrals to therapists in the area that may bill your insurance and to other resources when a higher level of care is required.

Mental Health First Aid (mentalhealthfirstaid.org) courses are offered throughout Orange County if you are interested in learning more about awareness of warning signs and how to help others. Fall 2018 Sports Preview Teams across the board look to knock off rivals for league titles

he 2018 fall high school sports season is well underway as the CIF calendar moved up across the board.

In our annual season preview, we get you caught up to date on how the Dolphins have fared early on and their outlook for the rest of the season.

Boys Water Polo

The road ahead for the Dana Hills boys water polo team isn’t unfamiliar, but being consistently one of the top teams of the area, it will be as challenging as ever.

The Dolphins finished third in the South Coast League last season, but expectations are always for Dana Hills to finish in the top two with rival San Clemente.

Dana Hills was listed on the CIF-SS preseason “teams to watch” list in the combined Division 1 and 2 grouping. Dolphins coach Matt Rosa said he expects Dana Hills to finish as one of the top teams in Division 2.

San Clemente was not listed as a “team to watch,” but Dana Hills always knows it would be folly to overlook the Tritons.

Rosa said the league contests with San Clemente are the biggest games on their schedule and expects to fight them for the league title.

Newcomer to the South Coast League, San Juan Hills, was also listed as a team to watch in Division 4.

The Dolphins return top players in senior attacker Kaden Likins, senior center Ian Diamond and junior goalie Justin Edward.

Dana Hills is 1-1 early on in the season with a big win over Righetti, 12-2, and a close loss to a tough Woodbridge team, 11-7.

Rosa said he was pleased with the team early on and believes the team’s depth is what could put this roster over the top.

Girls Golf

Golf is unique among high school sports in how much home-field advantage plays a part in the competition.

For example, football could deal with grass or turf and maybe a louder crowd environment, but the field dimensions and layout no matter which stadium, field or state you play, don’t change. However, each golf course brings a different variety of variables that can affect the game.

Dana Hills golf’s traditional home course of El Niguel Country Club is undergoing construction, so the Dolphins have moved over to the Monarch Beach Links for the 2018 season. Coach Glen Forster called it a challenging course, but senior Isley Grguric said she thinks the move has helped their scores.

It might end up being a big advantage in the race for the South Coast League title.

A league title is the big goal for Dana Hills after dropping the title to rival San Clemente last season.

“San Clemente, we’re coming after you,” senior Katie Jacobson said. “That’s our plan.”

Grguric and Jacobson are two of five returners in Dana Hills’ scoring seven.

There are four seniors among the returners, including Madeline Bayless and Sam Lapple, and a junior, Lauren Wahlstrom.

“A lot of us are seniors, so it’s going to be our last year,” Grguric said. “A lot of us

are trying to do well to win the league title.

That’s our goal for this year.”

Dana Hills will play San Clemente on the Triton home course at Bella Collina on Oct. 9 and the Dolphins will host San Clemente on Oct. 11.

Girls Volleyball

Dana Hills girls volleyball was dynamite in 2017 as the Dolphins rode a 15-game winning streak to an undefeated Sea View League title run and the CIF-SS playoffs.

The Dolphins lost in a five-set, firstround match of the Division 1 playoffs and have clearly taken the fire from that defeat into the early portion of the 2018 season.

Dana Hills is 13-1 with the one loss coming in the semifinals of the Tesoro tournament. Dana Hills went on to sweep the winner of that tournament, San Clemente, the next week. The Dolphins have also picked up wins over Laguna Beach and Huntington Beach.

Through the nonleague season, the Dolphins have been led by two-sport stars and sisters Drae and Stila Fresenius.

Next up on the docket for Dana Hills is a stacked South Coast League.

rankings and opens league play on Sept.

11 against Aliso Niguel, ranked No. 9 in the Division 1/2 poll.

On Sept. 13, Dana Hills will take on the team that beat them in the Division 1 playoffs last season, Trabuco Hills.

The Dolphins welcome defending league champion San Juan Hills, ranked No. 7 in the Division 1/2 poll, on Sept. 20.

Girls Tennis

A theme through many of the fall sports is the South County rivalry of Dana Hills and San Clemente.

That rivalry might be at its peak in girls tennis as the Dolphins and Tritons have shared the last four consecutive South Coast League titles. San Clemente and Dana Hills split their two matches last season, each won by two points, and their entries also went first and second at league finals.

Dana Hills and San Clemente will lock horns for the league title once again this season.

The Dolphins will be led by their No. 1 singles player, senior Courtney Swift.

SPORTS & OUTDOORS On the doubles side, the Fresenius sisters, Drae and Stila, will be instrumental on their separate doubles teams.

Dana Hills also has some youthful talent lining up as a trio of freshman will make an impact with the Dolphins this season.

Dana Hills is 2-1 on the season with a pair of 14-4 wins over Los Alamitos and Laguna Beach and a two-point loss to Northwood.

The Dolphins open up league play on Sept.

20 at San Clemente and will host the Tritons on Oct. 9. League Finals will take place Oct. 23-24 at Laguna Niguel Racquet Club.

Boys Cross Country

The Dana Hills cross country program is a well-oiled machine.

Last season, the Dolphins captured their third consecutive county title, yet another South Coast League title and finished third at the CIF-SS Division 1 Finals and State Championships.

While Dana Hills loses another star to graduation in Jack Landgraf, there are plenty of Dolphins in the wings to take up the mantle.

Simon Fuller, Eddie Wagenseller and Garrett Hough return as seniors, and Caleb Niednagel and Carrick Denker step up as upperclassmen juniors after their his stellar sophomore campaigns.

Fuller figures to be the leader of the new group with his second place finish at the South Coast League Finals, fifth at Orange County Championships and 13th at State. However, don’t be surprised if any member of a talented group behind him jumps up to the elite ranks of Coach Craig

Football Earns Its First Winning Record in Five Seasons It’s not an accomplishment that you raise a banner or hand out rings for, but the Dana Hills football team made a mark in its march toward improvement on Friday night.

Dana Hills begins the season at the Laguna Hills Invitational on Sept. 8 and hosts its own invitational on Sept. 22. Orange County Championships are Oct. 13 with South Coast League Finals following on Oct. 31.

The win gave Dana Hills (2-1) a winning record at any point of a season for the first time since Nov. 1, 2013.

“It feels unbelievable,” Gartlan said.

“Insane. Going 3-7 last year and already have two wins in three games, much improved.”

Gartlan, a junior, scored a 26-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter, returned the opening kick-off of the second half for a touchdown and scooped up a fumble recovery for a touchdown to push the Dolphins further and further away from Saddleback (0-3).

Dana Hills held Saddleback to just 17 yards of offense in the first quarter and 64 yards in the first half to earn their first shutout victory since Oct. 13, 2017, 10-0 over Laguna Hills. Saddleback has been outscored 146-0 in its first three games.

“We really worked hard as a team and worked hard all week to make sure and put our best into this,” junior defensive end Liam Boersma said. “A lot of dedication and hard work. We’re putting in the hours and I’m glad we’re succeeding.”

T

he times—or tide—are a-changin’ down at Lower Trestles. Typically, around this time of the year, the scaffolding and tents go up and the world’s best shortboarders begin to appear in the lineup. Since 2001, the Lowers Pro has stood as the only WSL (formerly ASP) world tour stop on the American mainland.

This year, however, the governing body of professional surfing opted to migrate about 260 miles north and 100 miles east to the Central Valley and the Kelly Slater Surf Ranch in Lemoore for their first-ever world tour event in a wave pool.

For some in the Dana Point and San Clemente surf community, this came as good news as the “circus” won’t be coming to town this year and the prime autumn surf season won’t be interrupted by a bunch of “spoiled pro surfers.”

On the flip side, there are a lot of locals, especially kids, who really look forward to seeing the show every year and rubbing elbows with their aquatic heroes. Wherever one falls on this subject, the fact of the matter is that with the Lowers Pro’s removal from the 2018 calendar, the opportunity for somebody else to step in and utilize the valuable California State Park permit is open.

coming to Lowers. That’s right, the logs are moving up the beach from San Onofre to Trestles. After running a successful first event up at Malibu earlier this summer, the crew at Relik saw the opportunity to do something a little bit outside the norm down at Lowers, and intends to crown a new longboard world champion here in San Clemente.

They’ve invited the top 50 longboards from around the world, including from the U.S., Australia, Europe, South Africa and Japan. A combination of the top pro longboarders, as well as 16 more traditional stylists, will all be vying for a piece of the $150,000 prize purse. A number of local surfers are entered into the contest, including Tyler Warren, Karina Rozunko,

Tory Gilkerson, Rachael Tilly and Corey Colapinto.

The waiting period for the contest will run from Sept. 10, 11 and 12 and will require two full days of surf to be completed—as compared to the men’s and women’s WSL Championship Tour events at Lowers which takes four days for the men and another three days for the women. With a much lighter footprint than the Hurley Pro, the infrastructure on the beach won’t be quite as extravagant. They’re planning on bringing food trucks down to the beach and there will be shuttle services available to get fans up and down the trail. There is also a VIP package available for purchase for those that want to go all in.

olling up to Ventura for the opening day of the NSSA Gold Coast season, San Clemente’s Tyrone Fomenko got straight to work. Winning the Explorer Boys division, it was an epic start to the season.

“Had an awesome weekend in Ventura!

Stoked to have surfed in the NSSA and congrats to everyone who surfed throughout the day,” said Fomenko on Instagram.

The 13-year-old San Clemente ripper’s also been enjoying a lot of success in the 2018 Sun Diego Am Slam Surf Series.

Winning the first contest of the fourevent series back in June at the San Clemente Pier, he stayed hot all summer long, finishing fourth in the second event in Pacific Beach and second in the third Dana Point Times September 7-13, 2018

Is El Niño Knocking?

So, any other surfing parents out there notice that the day school started the surf went absolutely flat?

All summer long, I’ve been waiting for my daughter to head back to Las Palmas for the selfish reason of having more free time to surf. Admittedly, September and October are among my favorite months around here as our beaches quiet down, the weather’s nice and the water’s still warm.

In the week leading up to the start of school, we had a good run of waves.

Then the minute the bell rang, nothing.

That’s got me looking at the forecast lately and trying to figure out when we may again have a solid swell.

One sign of hope that seems to be emerging is that the Climate Prediction Center has noted that there is a 70 percent chance of an El Niño winter along the West Coast of the United States.

While that may mean December, January and February run a little warmer and drier than normal, it also means we could be in for a good dose of Northern Hemisphere swell energy.

Climate scientists are seeing evidence of warmer-than-normal water building across the equator in the central Pacific.

This is typically a strong indicator of an impending El Nino weather pattern.

The last El Niño we experienced in California was in 2016 and the surf pumped. Keep an eye on the weather charts and those fingers crossed. DP

As far as where he wants surfing to take him, he’s looking well beyond his own backyard.

“My dream is to go to the Mentawais because the waves are perfect. I would

take my dad and friends. That sounds like a dream,” he told the Positive Vibe Warrior Foundation when they named him Grom of the Week earlier this summer.
