Five things Dana Point should know this week Pilgrim Demolished, No Determination of Cause for Sinking THE LATEST: For those hoping to receive closure on what specifically led to the Pilgrim’s demise, the community may never know.

Dana Point’s iconic tall ship was demolished and removed from its slip at Ocean Institute after it was determined the vessel could not be safely raised for inspection.

The Pilgrim, once a three-masted schooner that was a full-sized 1945 replica of the merchant ship that Richard Henry Dana detailed in his classic novel Two Years Before the Mast, keeled overnight between Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, March 29 and sank in her slip at Dana Point Harbor.

Staff planned for a crane to lift the Pilgrim out of the water on Thursday, April 2 for inspection to determine the cause of its sinking. But U.S. Coast Guard halted the operation when crews heard loud cracking and deemed the plan unsafe. Had the vessel been fully raised, inspections and determinations would have been conducted by multiple entities, including the insurance surveyor, U.S. Coast Guard, and an additional surveyor that Ocean Institute had retained to understand the cause.

Since then, all agencies involved subsequently made the decision to pivot from the removal of the Pilgrim to demolishing the vessel in its slip.

The barge crew began conducting the demolition and removal process on Tuesday, April 7. The removal was performed piece-by-piece over several days with extreme caution, enabling Ocean Institute team members to salvage select items for possible future display, according to Wendy Marshall, president of education and operations for Ocean Institute.

While the Pilgrim was last valued at $6 million, the same dollar amount does not necessarily equate to its insurance coverage. The vessel was surveyed during Pilgrim’s last haul out, at which time the marine surveyor provided a market value, or insurable value. Ocean Institute placed the insurance for the hull according to the surveyor’s recommendation, a limit that is customary for a vessel of Pilgrim’s type, size and age, Marshall said.

“The Ocean Institute is grateful for everyone’s involvement in this process, from the divers and U.S. Coast Guard to the crane barge DB Salta Verde and county agencies,” Marshall said in a statement.

“Once fully demolished, the Ocean Institute will assemble a task force to determine how to move forward with thoughts on replicating the experience the Pilgrim provided for nearly 40 years.”

The Pilgrim was a beloved classroom and field trip destination for hundreds of thousands of students for nearly 40 years and played a prominent role each year during the Ocean Institute’s Tall Ships Festival.

Community Members Step Up to Fill Face Mask Shortage THE LATEST: Members of the Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Club were hard at work on Friday, April 10 in the Dana Point Community Center, assembling face shields for medical personnel.

Countywide, other organizations including Orange County’s Rotarian clubs (e.g., Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary) also have joined the efforts to collectively launch the Rotary Face Shield Project—an initiative gathering Rotarians and volunteers to as-

semble thousands of face shields to distribute to hospitals and senior living facilities.

“When I was watching the news, the President and the doctors and nurses were saying how they weren’t getting the PPE,” recalled Marc Aarons, the district governor for Rotary District 5320, which comprises clubs in Orange County. “I also remembered hearing about an ER doctor passing away helping other people. I said, ‘Let’s try to get something organized to at least get our local hospitals supplies.’ ” Throughout the pandemic, one of the major storylines has been the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) at hospitals.

Officials from Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo had previously explained that while staff has been able to reuse face masks, hospitals simply don’t have the supply necessary for the influx of patients.

“Yeah, we’re in the same boat. I’ve talked to dozens of other hospitals. We’re in the same boat in the U.S. No one has the supply necessary for this type of influx,” Dr. Jim Keany of Mission Hospital said.

Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that health care facilities practice an extended use of face masks or allow face masks to be used beyond the shelf-life as part of strategies to optimize supply.

“Our strategy, No. 1, is to preserve PPE as much as possible. So, developing systems that don’t require specific change” of equipment such as masks and gowns, Keany had said. “No. 2 strategy is reuse and decontamination. And the third strategy is extended use . . . they’re meant for certain hours, but we’re having people extend that use beyond recommended

hourly use.”

And with the help of the Rotary, which produced about 15,000 face shields the first weekend of April, hospitals within St. Jude’s network of medical facilities, including the one in Fullerton, were able to obtain about 10,000 of those masks, according to Aarons. Even more shields were assembled over the second weekend of April.

The number of face masks given to a facility depends on how much money each individual Rotary club donates to the cause.

“Each club donates money, and they’re allowed to donate their percentage to whatever facility they want,” he explained, noting that each shield costs about $2.

Rotary District 5320, which includes the Rotaries in Dana Point, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, has five locations set up throughout the county where both members and volunteers can help put the shields together.

Aarons notes that they can only accommodate about 200 to 300 participants at a time in order to practice social distancing requirements such as spacing work stations six feet apart. He also stressed that they’re wiping down areas and screening individuals before entering.

“We do check (everyone’s) temperatures. They have to answer health questions before coming into the room,” Aarons said. “It’s a very sanitized environment.”

Gov. Newsom Announces Plan for Reopening California

THE LATEST: Gov. Gavin Newsom released a detailed plan on reopening the state’s economy amid the coronavirus pandemic during a Tuesday, April 14 press briefing.

The roadmap to modify the stay-athome order is centric to six indicators, which Newsom outlined during his announcement: •The ability to monitor and protect our communities through testing, contact tracing, isolating and supporting those who are positive or exposed • The ability to prevent infection in people who are at risk for more severe COVID-19 • The ability of the hospital and health systems to handle surges • The ability to develop therapeutics to meet the demand • The ability for businesses, schools, and child care facilities to support physical distancing • The ability to determine when to reinstitute certain measures, such as the stay-athome orders, if necessary “Our next phase is an optimistic phase,” Newsom said. “We move from surge and begin to transition to suppression . . . there’s a ray of optimism. This is one (phase) where science and public health—not politics—must be the guide.”

Newsom went on to applaud the actions that individuals have taken in physical distancing to bend the curve, but did so soberly.

“Today, we had a record number of deaths that we are reporting,” Newsom said. “Seven hundred fifty-eight individuals, stories, families, lives that were torn apart. Seventy-one individuals that lost their lives just since the last reporting I gave you. . . . We are not out of the woods yet. We are not spiking the ball.”

This will not be a permanent state, Newsom said.

On April 14, State Sen. Patricia Bates, whose district represents Dana Point, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, signed a letter among other Republican leaders urging Newsom to prioritize the economy as the next phase of the COVID-19 response.

The letter called for Newsom to have equal representation between job creators and their workforce in conversations surrounding the reopening of the economy. On April 13, Newsom had announced a pact between California, Oregon and Washington on a shared vision Dana Point Times April 17-23, 2020

for reopening their economies.

“Government’s sole revenue depends on the private sector,” the letter to Newsom stated. “Any plan for recovery must be coordinated and transparent so we get Californians back to work and save our crucial small businesses. How we plan to move forward with this recovery will have a dramatic effect on not just the current economy, but our future economy as well.”

WHAT’S NEXT: In closing remarks during Newsom’s press briefing, he emphasized that the public should not expect normalcy in the near future.

“There’s no light switch here,” Newsom said. “I would argue it’s more like a dimmer. This toggling back and forth between more restrictive and less restrictive measures. More individual accountability, more individual responsibility as it relates to face coverings, as it relates to practicing physical distancing. More individual responsibility if you’ve been exposed.”—LB

TCA Names Interim CEO Samuel Johnson THE LATEST: The Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) announced that Samuel Johnson has been appointed to serve as the interim chief executive officer, following Michael Kraman’s retirement.

Johnson first joined the TCA in 2015 as the chief toll operations officer, overseeing the agencies’ tolling systems, customer service, revenue management, violation processing, toll compliance, customer experience communications and information technology functions.

While Johnson served as COO, the TCA made the decision in February 2019 to consolidate its customer service center in San Clemente to reduce the costs of running it. It was the last service center outside of the TCA’s headquarters in Irvine and closed on March 1, 2019.

The customer service center had downsized from 10 employees years ago to four prior to its closure. TCA officials stated most of the information provided at the center can now be found on its mobile app.

Prior to joining TCA, Johnson spent 12 years with the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) overseeing countywide efforts to implement transportation solutions and serving as part of the executive team responsible for the region’s tolling enterprise, including the State Route 125 toll road and the I-15 Express Lanes, the nation’s first dynamically priced toll facility.

“I am honored by the Boards’ unanimous selection and look forward to leading the talented team of staff we have at TCA,” Johnson said in a press release.

“Ensuring the health and safety of our

customers, our staff and their families; and aligning our efforts with the Boards’ vision and goals are key priorities, and I look forward to addressing the challenges ahead of us.”

To Cover or Not to Cover: A Review of Directives from Various Agencies THE LATEST: The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending the use of face coverings in light of recent studies revealing individuals with coronavirus who were asymptomatic. Reports have indicated that even those who eventually develop symptoms (pre-symptomatic) can transmit the virus to others before showing symptoms.

“This means that the virus can spread between people interacting in close proximity—for example, speaking, coughing, or sneezing—even if those people are not exhibiting symptoms,” a CDC statement says. “In light of this new evidence, CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.”

The CDC maintains emphasis on keeping a six-foot social distancing in order to slow spread of the virus. Cloth face coverings fashioned from household items or made at home from common materials at low cost can be used as an additional, voluntary public health measure, the agency says.

“The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators,” the CDC statement says. “Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for health care workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance.”

The CDC also refers to “The President’s Coronavirus Guidelines for America,” which instructs people to avoid social gatherings, avoid eating out, avoid nursing homes and to practice good hygiene.

While the CDC refers to various studies pointing to face coverings preventing spread, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) states the support is lacking.

“There is limited evidence to suggest that use of cloth face coverings by the public during a pandemic could help reduce disease transmission,” a CDPH statement says. “Their primary role is to reduce the release of infectious particles into the air when someone speaks, coughs, or sneezes, including someone who has COVID-19 but feels well. Cloth face coverings are not a substitute for physical distancing and washing hands and staying Page 4

home when ill.”

The CDPH has echoed similar guidelines by emphasizing the importance of frequent hand washing, avoiding touching your face, avoiding sick people and implementing physical distancing by staying at home.

“There may be a benefit to reducing asymptomatic transmission and reinforcing physical distancing from the use of face coverings,” a CDPH statement says.

However, face coverings may increase risk if users reduce their use of strong defenses, such as physical distancing and frequent hand washing, when using face coverings, the CDPH warns.

Dr. Rodney Rohde is a clinical and medical laboratory professional with a specialization in virology. He is also the Associate Dean for Research for the College of Health Professions at Texas State University.

“It’s important to remember that cloth masks will not perform like surgical masks or N95 masks, both of which are validated,” says Rohde. “However, cloth masks will help to reduce the respiratory droplets which contain virus particles from being exhaled and spread in the environment. By catching the respiratory droplets, cloth masks will reduce the viral load that would be deposited on surfaces and in the air near other people.”

Rohde adds that although N95 masks filter out virus particles in the nanometer range, most people should be wearing cloth masks primarily due to the N95 shortage for health care workers.

“Cotton cloth is not designed to fully filter virus particles in the nanometer range,” Rohde said. “However, it may provide some protection, as well as reduce the viral load one may shed in the environment. It could be very helpful for asymptomatic individuals that would normally be wearing nothing.”—LB danapointtimes.com

Maison Café Reopens for Online Orders, Pickup and Delivery Maison Café + Market in Dana Point reopened its doors for take-out orders earlier this month after taking a hiatus.

Chef Danielle Kuhn, a San Clemente resident, grew up in Orange County and worked in local restaurants including Cannons Seafood Grill. With two decades of service industry experience, Kuhn opened Maison Café + Market with the mission of creating a space that felt like home more than a restaurant. But with restaurants not being permitted to allow dine-in options, Kuhn had to take time to reconfigure the Maison business model and be there for her family.

“As a mom, I needed this week to be with the boys and lead them through this unknown territory of distance learning,” Kuhn said in her announcement. “And to show them that there is always good when you choose to see it, to stay calm even in the midst of the chaos around.”

Maison is now available for online orders for pickup and delivery to the surrounding community. Hand washing is mandatory for staff every 30 minutes and in between any interaction with a guest. Gloves are worn while packaging orders, and all surfaces are sanitized every half hour. Although doors are open, there is a limit of three guests in the restaurant at the same time.

Customers are strongly encouraged to place orders online for curbside pickup.

“I've thought very carefully on how we are going to serve the community better, safer and stronger than ever,” Kuhn said. “Just like we have always done, we will continue to be diligent in our cleaning and sanitizing.”

Hours of operation will be Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m.-3 p.m. The market will be closed on Mondays to allow for preparation ahead of the week. All menus are fully available to order from online, as well as over the phone. Maison is also offering complimentary deliveries to Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente.

“I am forever grateful for the love and support,” Kuhn said. “I cannot even describe the amount of hugging that will happen once this storm has passed.”

The “Artist Spotlight” series is a bi-weekly online enrichment program that features a performance by a touring or local professional musician and spotlights a CUSD music student. Each episode features a short interview followed by a live musical performance by the professional musician and a pre-recorded performance by a CUSD music student.

The first episode premiered on Wednesday, April 15 on CUSD’s Facebook and Instagram accounts and featured local musician Jason Feddy and South Orange County School of the Arts at Dana Hills High School student Molly Bergman’s video “Days Like That.”

The next episode will air on Wednesday, April 29 at 1 p.m.

Dana Point Named in California’s Top 50 Safest Cities Dana Point was ranked No. 46 in SafeWise’s Safest Cities in California report.

SafeWise has been conducting a comprehensive study of safety in the U.S. for six years now, using FBI crime statistics and U.S. Census population data to rank the safest cities in each state and across the country. Dana Point moved up 20 spots from last year’s ranking, meaning the city saw improvement in safety measures as far

as violent crime and property crime.

“The safest cities rankings are intended to highlight cities with low crime rates and ignite conversation and action around how to make all cities and communities safer,” said Rebecca Edwards, a SafeWise Safest Cities expert.

To identify the safest cities of 2020, SafeWise reviewed 2018 FBI crime report statistics (the most recent complete report available at the time of ranking) and population data.

“Our rankings are based on both violent and property crime numbers,” Edwards said. “We looked at the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) in each city and the number of reported property crimes (burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft).”

Arson is excluded from the FBI’s property crime rates, so it was excluded as well.

“To level the playing field, we calculated the rate of crimes per 1,000 people in each city,” Edwards said. “This makes it easier to directly compare the likelihood of these crimes occurring in cities with vastly different populations.”

Both violent and property crime numbers were weighted equally, meaning that a city with no violent crimes reported could end up lower on the list due to a higher property crime rate, and vice versa.

Violent crimes and property crimes were standardized for each state before scores were weighted and cities were ranked.

MemorialCare Launches Mobile Testing Center for Coronavirus

A drive-up testing center for those exhibiting symptoms of the COVID-19 disease is now operational in San Clemente and will serve members of the local community, but with the priority going to San Clemente residents.

MemorialCare on Monday, April 13, opened the mobile testing site at the home of its shuttered hospital campus on Camino de los Mares. Only persons who have shown symptoms of the novel coronavirus, secured a physician’s order and scheduled an appointment to visit the center will be permitted for testing.

“Increasing access to safe COVID-19 testing will provide critical support to broader community efforts to reduce the spread of the virus and will allow MemorialCare and other area hospitals and providers to dedicate staffing and other critical resources to best care for affected patients,” MemorialCare Vice President Tony Struthers said in a press release.

According to Struthers, the site will give preference to San Clemente residents based on availability of test kits, but MemorialCare won’t turn away any non-San Clemente residents as long as they have a doctor’s order and have made an appointment.

“While we will continue to give preference to San Clemente residents, we will be testing people outside of San Clemente as well,” Struthers told Dana Point Times on Wednesday, April 15. “It’s based upon access to testing material.”

In partnership with the city of San Clemente, MemorialCare announced earlier this month that it would be launching the mobile testing site for those in the community exhibiting symptoms of the virus.

The April 1 announcement followed a vote that San Clemente city councilors had taken a few days earlier to approve an amended version of the local emergency proclamation they had previously passed.

The amended version of that resolution relaxes an emergency-services zoning restriction that had been imposed on the parcel in 2016 and established “Mobile Testing for COVID-19 for residents of 92673 and 92672 Zip Codes.”

Addressing the language in the resolution, San Clemente Mayor Dan Bane previously explained that because tests had been hard to come by, MemorialCare would be coordinating with the county’s health office to give preference for testing to those living in those zip codes.

The opening of the mobile testing center came as the county and state continue to work toward ramping up testing for the virus. As of Wednesday, April 15, 15,305 people in Orange County had been tested, according to the Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA).

David Souleles, deputy agency director for OCHCA, recently told the Orange County Board of Supervisors that testPage 6

ing had continued to be a challenge, as certain components of the testing kits, such as swabs, have been hard to obtain.

“If we can get sufficient testing supplies, we can collect samples on 80 to 160 people per day,” Souleles told the board during its March 31 meeting, noting that “in order to do so, we need to have all of the ingredients.”

As a result of the limited supplies, Souleles said, testing has been prioritized for those who are seriously ill, health care workers, first responders and those living in congregate living situations such as nursing facilities.

He did strike a more optimistic tone, however, stating, “I think we’re on a path moving forward to see more testing in the coming weeks.”

During the weekly presentation and update to the board on Tuesday this week, Souleles, noting that testing for coronavirus continues to be a priority for health officials in the state and county, said the health agency’s lab, as well as hospital and commercial labs, have been able to turn around results for high-priority patients within 24 to 48 hours.

As of Wednesday, the total number of coronavirus cases in Orange County was just shy of 1,376, with 22 deaths. The county health office also reported 104 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized, including 45 being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Appointments for testing at the center located at 654 Camino de los Mares can be made by calling 877.696.3622 on Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

about 2.5 billion people in the world. Now there are over 7 billion. When a problem pops up, one of the most powerful tools we have to solve it is the massive brainpower at the world’s disposal.

Given the need, the world has the cumulative brainpower to find the answers.

You see this concept in capitalism every day, where problems are solved and, in the process, new solutions, new markets, and new millionaires are created.

Finally, if we look at the space race, another unique aspect of our human species emerges. In short, there can be many different methods to solve the same problems. Elon Musk uses a completely different way to get to space than Jeff Bezos’s Blue Horizon, or Virgin Galactic’s Richard Branson. And they all work.

For these reasons, I’m optimistic about our future. It’s why we’ll get through this national crisis faster than people think.

COVID-19 ISN’T A CRIMINAL JUSTICE ISSUE, SO STOP MAKING IT ONE PATRICIA WENSKUNAS, Crime Survivors Founder and CEO

Over the past week, I have had many people contact me asking what I think about the impact of COVID-19 on our criminal justice system. More specifically, they have been asking me if I think it is OK to release many of the people we have in jail so that they can stay healthy and be with their families. My answer to that is absolutely not! Neither COVID-19 nor the coronavirus should be used as an excuse to release criminals from jail. Trust me when I say that California already has enough lousy ideas on dealing with criminals that they don’t need to consider another one. What people need to realize is that the second that you become soft on crime, you become hard on victims.

And, listen, maybe it is just me, but I have read nothing about how this virus makes criminals less dangerous. I have read nothing about how this virus suddenly rehabilitates criminals and makes them productive members of our society.

And, most importantly, I have read nothing about how this virus protects victims of crime. Using this public emergency to achieve the misguided social justice objective of emptying our jails is shameful. With all the soft-on-crime policies this state has implemented over the past few years and the commitment our elected officials have made to releasing violent and dangerous criminals into our neighborhoods, I am shocked that there are any more people to let out of our jails. I am actually starting to think that our jails might be the safest places to be right now.

But seriously, we need to take a step back and focus here. Our criminal justice system exists for a reason. It protects those that follow the law and punishes those that don’t. For anyone to think that we need to put that concept aside for this virus should not be someone making decisions about our safety.

If people want to keep asking what I think about San Francisco or any other city/county in this state letting people out of jail because of this virus or any other reason they think is justified (e.g., can’t afford bail, etc.), here is my answer: No, it isn’t a good idea. It’s a really bad idea.

We have a responsibility to protect the vulnerable populations in our community, and when we decide to release criminals into our streets, we are impacting the most vulnerable population of all: crime victims.

So as long as I have breath in my body, and blood flowing through my veins, I will do whatever I can to oppose these myopic, irresponsible and dangerous policies. That is a promise.

The entire world has become a human petri dish, and it seems that none of us knows how the experiment will turn out.

While this happens, there are interesting developments that are taking place. These things may not be visible unless we take a step back and look at the big picture.

The first is “crowd sourcing.” Once upon a time, the greatest minds got together in New Mexico to work on the atom bomb. It was a huge undertaking that required tens of thousands of people.

But think of this: we no longer need to put the greatest minds in a single room to solve a problem. Problem solving can take place all over the world simultaneously, with hundreds, thousands, and even millions of people helping.

Big problems are now regularly split up into many groups so they can be “reassembled” with answers much faster than ever before. The old adage of “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time” has turned into “How many people can we get to eat this elephant?”

Have you ever asked a question on social media? You’re asking the “crowd” for an answer, and you choose the one that works for you.

Next, there’s what I call the theory of “warm bodies.” After WWII, there were

At the Movies: Italy, as Viewed on Screen

ith the unprecedented circumstance of the whole world slowly shutting down as tragedy looms over the major regions of Asia, Europe and the U.S., our perception is changing slightly as well. How we view art from these specific locations is currently a bit bittersweet, especially with how bleak the past month has been for Italy.

On social media, I’ve noticed a minor resurgence in old Hollywood films like David Lean’s Summertime (1955) and William Wyler’s Roman Holiday (1953). The films are set in two of the country’s most popular cities, Venice and Rome, with a romantic, whimsical atmosphere that makes you wish you were having adventurous vacations there. Obviously a trip to

anywhere in Europe would not be ideal or appropriate right now, but maybe this kind of escapism through film could help ease the pain, so to speak.

At home last weekend, I revisited one of my favorite Italy-set films, Michael Winterbottom’s The Trip to Italy (2014). The second in the Trip series starring comedic actors Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as fictionalized depictions of themselves, Italy has been my favorite of the duo’s episodic, scenic adventures, as I think it has the best jokes and moments. All three comedies are very entertaining and clever, partly because Winterbottom, Coogan and Brydon make use of the locations to have some fun. But it’s also clear that the filmmakers have genuine appreciation for the country’s history and geography.

Trip to Italy primarily holds up and is still very funny, though now, with everything going on, watching it does leave a somber tone. When the Sept. 11 attacks occurred, a lot of movies filmed in New York City went through a brief period of being somewhat taboo. Similarly, we could see a

allowing for some variety. Cavaliere doesn’t give a repetition count, instead encouraging you to do them “to failure”—that is, until you can’t do them anymore.

BUFF DUDES WORKOUT Even though gyms are closed, you can still get buff at home with dumbbells.

always wished I would dig finance as much as sustainability. Last year, the two topics started to merge. So I gave myself the task to green my investments, and it’s actually fun to learn. The next step up from learning is sharing that knowledge.

The first thing that really got me thinking was that, last August, Greta Thunberg came across the Atlantic on a zero-emission sailboat (and returned to Europe in November on a catamaran with solar panels). The airline industry was worried. In 10 years, when this current generation grows up into the business world, will they be the kind of jet-setting business travelers we’re used to seeing? Per TIME magazine, “One crosscountry round trip between New York and San Francisco emits about one ton of carbon dioxide per person. That single ton, in turn, melts around 3 square meters (32 square feet) of Arctic summer sea ice.”

Now, the airlines’ worries are growing exponentially with the coronavirus.

Also in January, Microsoft announced it will go carbon negative, reduce emissions across its entire supply chain. It got me thinking how nice it would be if city hall went carbon negative.

Now in the era of work-from-home, Microsoft is gaining popularity, thanks to its wide array of products, including Teams group chat, cloud services, and Xbox Live.

Kiplinger, a media company that provides business forecasts and finance advice, rates Microsoft as one of the “11 Best Tech Stocks for the New Coronavirus Norm.”

Buy low, sell high. It’s time for actions. But first, research, research, research. Luckily, we have the time saved from driving. For the same reason, many organizations are trying to gain more members with free online events. And, many newspapers removed paywalls for COVID-19 related coverage, so you have the opportunity to enjoy the New York Times article, “How the Virus Transformed the Way Americans Spend Their Money.” Now, let’s hope I’ll not get too carried away with all these resources and forget to tune in to city council meetings.

Youth Baseball Steps Up to the Plate, Delivers Hand Sanitizer

Dana Point Youth Baseball team members, parents, administrators and coaches united off the field to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in their community.

In mid-March, when Orange County announced its shelter-in-place directive, the league ceased all operations. But the team found a way to help others in need with the extra free time.

“As basic cleaning items and other living necessities began to disappear from store shelves, the team decided to find a way to get hand sanitizer to the people who needed it most—local seniors,” said Dana Kislig, President of DPYB. “They purchased hand sanitizer by the gallon—even a 50-gallon drum—and scrambled to find and purchase wholesale small plastic bottles from multiple sources.”

Eighty gallons of hand sanitizer and 6,500 2- to 3-ounce plastic bottles later, the team began to distribute the fruits of their labor on Monday, April 6. They will deliver to homebound seniors and will work with the City of Dana Point for bulk distribution.

“Instead of concentrating on what we couldn’t do, we decided on what we could do and did, and are doing that,” Kislig said.

“Our community has a need for the basics at this time—specifically, hand sanitizer and face masks. We decided to learn how to make both.”

The DPYB families have been directly involved in the process and making hundreds of bottles and sewing tens of masks each.

“DPYB has long had the understanding that we are mentoring our youth, and we are teaching our kids about more than

baseball,” Kislig said. “This COVID-19 pandemic has put much of everything to a halt, including our baseball program (as we knew it). We decided that we would work with our youth and help our community on things outside baseball. It is so humbling to see all the wonderful baseball kids give back and help. And the families keep asking for more.”

DPYB bought whatever the organization could from various sources and ensured that quality met medical specs for both projects, with USDA-certified E3 quality liquid hand sanitizer, aloe vera, “beach” scented oil essence (makes about 10,000 2-ounce bottles), 250 yards of high density cotton, 1,000 yards of elastic and 100 spindles of thread (makes about 1,000 face masks).

“Seems as if life is throwing us all a curveball, but Dana Point Youth Baseball is stepping up to the plate in a big way,” Kislig Page 12

said. “In fact, they just ordered another 50 gallons of hand sanitizer to bottle and distribute in late April.”

Dana Point Mayor Richard Viczorek, who has coached and umpired for DPYB, was at the Dana Point Community Center on Friday, April 10 to accept the hand sanitizer and thank the league.

“We are very thankful to our community groups such as Dana Point Youth Baseball who are stepping up during this time and looking to respond to the needs of our residents,” Viczorek said. “It truly embodies the American spirit and is extremely encouraging to see the people of Dana Point come together to get through this unprecedented time.”

Calling All Aspiring Surf Photographers Follow the Light surf photography grant returns for 2020

T

he zone between Dana Point and San Clemente has produced some of surfing’s most revered photographers over the past half-century.

An early publishing hub for the surf magazines, Surfer Magazine initially swooped up the big-name talent, from the iconic imagery of Ron Stoner, to the indelible portraiture of Art Brewer, to the captivating action shots of Tom Servais and Jeff Divine.

Meanwhile, at Surfing Magazine, from 1973 onward, the photo department was the exclusive domain of Larry “Flame” Moore, who turned Salt Creek into his own personal photo studio. With his tack-sharp compositions and dedication to early morning “Larry light,” Flame captured more than 40 cover shots and is responsible for helping countless pro surfing careers get off the ground.

From Martin Potter’s earliest airs, to Christian Fletcher’s punk takeover, to a spry Pat O’Connell, it was Flame who decided who made the mag and who didn’t throughout the 1980s and ’90s.

He also helped foster the talents of emerging photographers. Providing guidance, instruction and support for those he believed in, the masthead of Surfing Magazine was filled with Flame’s protégés.

Sadly, in October 2005, after 30 years Dana Point Times April 17-23, 2020

at the helm of his beloved magazine, Flame succumbed to a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. After he passed, a group of family and friends formed the Follow the Light Foundation to ensure that his legacy of passionately supporting up-and-coming surf photographers continued.

Providing monetary grants and a platform for exposure for the photographers since its inception, Follow the Light has helped kickstart the careers of modern luminaries such as Chris Burkard, Todd Glaser, Ray Collins and Morgan Maassen.

“It’s not easy to be a surf photographer today, but it’s vitally important to the sport and culture that it continues to be documented and celebrated through photography,” explains Shawn Parkin, photo editor of The Surfer’s Journal and a former Follow the Light grant winner.

In 2019, Follow the Light received nearly 100 submissions from aspiring surf photographers around the world. In the end, it was Nick Green from Hobart, Tasmania, who took top honors. For the effort, he received a cash grant, as well as working opportunities with Vans and the WSL. And just this month, Green released his first photography book.

“Photography is so diverse and always changing. If you are sick of shooting one thing or a certain way, then you can mix it

up to keep it fresh,” Green explains. “It’s also led me to the most amazing experiences, introduced me to the greatest people and allowed me to travel; it’s fueled the lifestyle I seek, as well as been a creative outlet for me to pursue.”

The Follow the Light is once again back and looking to celebrate the work of the next great surf photographer. Partnering with the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center, the submission period is now open for the 2020 grant and working opportunity.

And while these are, indeed, challenging times we find ourselves in, for those looking to make their mark in surfing with their camera, it is the perfect moment to dig into those hard drives, search through the archives and put together a portfolio of work.

In keeping with the tradition of Follow the Light, the grant winner will receive a minimum $5,000 award and a working opportunity with supporting brand sponsors.

The global competition is open to anyone between the ages of 16 and 25, with the winner selected from a pool of five finalists. The final date for submissions will be June 26.

This 11-year-old from San Clemente is not only ruling out in the water, but as the oldest of six kids, she’s also an amazing big sister.

A sixth-grader at Shorecliffs Elementary School, she first learned to surf at Doheny and San Onofre on a bright pink soft top at the wee age of 5. She’s been hooked ever since.

Back before the beaches closed, chances are you could find Dimick shredding at TStreet or Lowers.

“I can’t wait for Lowers to open up again,” she says. “What inspires me about surfing is that there is always room to improve and something new to learn.”

In terms of surf heroes, Dimick doesn’t have to look too far to find a positive role model.

“I’ve always really looked up to Caroline Marks in surfing, because she surfs super good, she is local in San Clemente, and she is always nice to me and my friends when we see her out in the water,” says Dimick.
