Five things Dana Point should know this week ‘Golden State Killer’ Captured at Last; Linked to Two Dana Point Murders 38 Years Ago THE LATEST: The “Original Night Stalker” (ONS), later known as the “Golden State Killer,” has finally been taken into custody.

Ex-police officer Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, was arrested on the night of April 24 in Sacramento on a warrant issued from Ventura County on two counts of murder with special circumstances, including murder during a rape and murder during a burglary.

DeAngelo, who is named responsible for more than a dozen murders, more than 50 rapes and 120 burglaries in the state of California beginning in 1974, suddenly vanished in 1986. The investigation has remained open ever since.

During a press conference on April 25 at the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and various district attorney’s offices and sheriff’s departments from across the state said that DeAngelo will be tried for the “Golden State Killer” murders, rapes, burglaries and more, thanks to a DNA criminal investigation.

On Aug. 19, 1980, the serial murderer now known as the ONS struck in the middle of the night, raping Dana Point resident Patrice Harrington and then bludgeoning both Patrice and her husband Keith to death in their Niguel Shores home on Cockleshell Drive. The couple, who had only been married for three months, had recently moved into their new home, owned by Keith’s father.

WHAT’S NEXT: Sheriff’s department representatives stated that on the evening of April 24, DeAngelo was taken without incident as he exited his Sacramento home.

During the press conference, Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas explained that a full outline of the trial team and list of charges will soon be available. —Daniel Ritz

Board of Supervisors Reject Mayors’ Proposal for Santiago Canyon Shelter THE LATEST: A meeting took place on Dana Point Times April 27-May 3, 2018

April 19 at the Ole Hanson Beach Club in San Clemente where the mayors of Orange County cities met to decide where to put a regional homeless shelter. It appeared as though they had come up with a solution and recommended that a space in the outskirts of Orange County, an old and unused elementary school, would work.

But the Orange County Board of Supervisors rejected the idea late Tuesday, April 24 after a closed-session meeting.

Southern Orange County cities have been criticized by northern cities as not doing their diligence in providing adequate space and resources for a homeless shelter. The cities of Irvine, Laguna Niguel and Huntington Beach pushed back against the supervisors after it was suggested to put tent encampments on county-owned land within the cities.

Last week, the nonprofit iHope took members of the press through several sites in South Orange County that could be turned into shelters. City managers pushed back on the notion and said that they have a plan already in place.

The mayors sent a letter to Supervisor Lisa Bartlett stating that the Santiago Canyon site would be the best location. It wasn’t enough to garner support.

“The mayors of the South Orange County SPA (service plan area) are ready to take all steps necessary to move forward expediently with the site as an emergency homeless shelter,” a letter signed by the South County mayors stated.

WHAT’S NEXT: Developments regarding the issues related to homeless populations in Orange County have been coming at rapid pace. Dana Point Times will provide more information as it becomes available.

Dana Point Adopts Resolution to Oppose New Offshore Oil, Gas Drilling Off Coast THE LATEST: On April 24, the Dana Point Ocean Water Quality Subcommittee voted unanimously to adopt a resolution in opposition of new offshore oil and gas drilling, fracking and other well stimulation in Federal and State waters off the California coast.

Dana Point joined a number of other State Governors, including Governor Jerry Brown, a wide variety of state departments as well as more than 46 cities across California in taking a stand against new federal offshore oil and gas leases in the Pacific Ocean proposed by United States Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke under President Trump.

City Holds Second ByDistrict Voting Workshop; Ordinance Reading Possible May 2 THE LATEST: The City of Dana Point held the second public by-district voting workshop at RH Dana Elementary School on April 25.

City Manager Mark Denny said that at the conclusion of the meeting, City Council members would be gathering for a closed-session discussion of the workshop’s findings.

WHAT’S NEXT: Staying with the schedule to stay within the safe harbor timeline, it is possible that the City Council could hold the first reading of an ordinance to adopt either a five-district or a four-district with an at-large mayor by-district voting map on Tuesday, May 2 at the next City Council meeting. Political Spectrum: 11 of 16 Candidates for the 49th Attend Chamber Forum THE LATEST: A majority of the candidates for California’s 49th Congressional district election answered several questions comprised by the public and several area chambers of commerce.

In attendance at the April 25 forum were 11 of the 16 candidates running in the district that stretches from Vista to San

Juan Capistrano. The Republican candidates were Diane Harkey, Brian Maryott, Craig Nordal, Mike Schmitt and Joshua Schoonover.

Questions were presented to candidates in non-sequential order: one candidate would be asked about immigration, for example, and the next would be asked a question on a completely different issue. All candidates received the same questions once it came to their turn.

The chambers’ forum featured only one question about business, asking candidates how they would improve commerce for Californians.

Tax-focused and on her home turf of Dana Point, Harkey, who currently sits on the state’s Board of Equalization, was the one dissenting Republican at the forum who said she didn’t agree with the Trump administration’s tax code reform.

Her local counterparts, Applegate of San Clemente and Levin of San Juan Capistrano said they would push for incentives for green and renewable energy that would cut costs for businesses, especially for corporate manufacturers who are some of the highest users of energy.

Maryott, a first-term City Council member in San Juan Capistrano, said he would work to expedite the process of getting tax bills passed and make them “permanent” without omnibus spending, the practice of attaching other legislation to bills in an effort to compromise and keep the United States government funded.

By summer, it’ll be down to two candidates in California’s automatic runoff system following the June 5 primaries.

Dana Point Trolley to Return June 8 with Expanded Route The City of Dana Point has officially announced the 2018 Dana Point trolley route, beginning on June 8. Thanks to continued growth and support from the Dana Point community, the 2018 trolley season will feature the most expansive route to date.

Coastal stops include: Dana Point Harbor Drive and Puerto Place, Pacific Coast Highway at the pedestrian bridge and on Coastal highway-southbound. Red Cross Encourages Blood Donation this May This May, the American Red Cross is calling for donors to give blood and platelets regularly to be prepared to meet the needs of patients in emergency situations.

In trauma situations, when there’s no time to check a patient’s blood type, emergency personnel reach for type O negative red blood cells and type AB plasma because they can be transfused to any patient, regardless of blood type. Less than seven percent of the population has type O negative blood, and only about four percent of the population has type AB blood.

Platelets may also be needed to help with clotting in cases of massive bleeding. Because platelets must be transfused within five days of donation, there is a constant – often critical – need to keep up with hospital demand.

Donors of all blood types are urged to roll up a sleeve this May to help meet the needs of trauma patients and others with serious medical conditions. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting www.redcrossblood.org or calling 1.800.733.2767.

Vintage Culture Doheny Wood car show returns to Dana Point

ven the backside of the visors, painted with the signatures of local legends such as Phil Edwards, Micky Munoz and more of Janeann and Gary Clark’s 1946 Canadian Mercury, are soaked in storied California history.

The Clark’s Mercury and hundreds of other woodies will thunder into Doheny State Beach on Saturday, April 28, and Sunday, April 29, bringing with them similar tokens of California beach culture lore as they gather for the 21st Annual Doheny Wood show presented by the Southern California Woodie Club (SCWC).

The Clarks reside in Capistrano Beach and were founding members of the Southern California Woodie Club. Now, Janeann and Gary are the president and assistant to the president, respectively, of the morethan-250-member club.

The Southern California Woodie Club hosts monthly shows during the summer months from San Diego all the way to Santa Cruz.

“Everybody loves a woodie,” said Janeann. “It just brings a smile to people’s faces.”

“This car, ‘SUFRGRL,’ is actually Janeann’s car,” explained Gary. “We, just a few years ago, finally sold the 1948 Ford woodie that Janeann actually drove to high school while I was away at Vietnam.”

Woodie production ground to a halt for the most part in the early 1950s, but saw a resurgence in popularity in the 1970s due to the trend in California beach culture.

Nowadays, fond memories and attachment to California lore keep these moment-intime cars a prized collector’s item.

The Clarks mentioned there will be a wide variety of woodies including fully stock cars as well as modified, contemporized versions.

Janeann said although some people are purists, preferring woodies with all original stock-issued parts such as large drum brakes, upgrades and contemporary Dana Point Times April 27-May 3, 2018

woodies have their positives.

“Modernizing your woodie keeps them on the road,” Janeann explained. “With things like modern brakes, you can be on the road, in and out with regular cars.

Keeping the car moving is good for them, and it gets them seen.”

She mentions that today, the most dangerous part of driving her late 1940s vehicle is distracted drivers trying to take photographs while hanging out the windows.

In addition to drive-by photo spreads, the Clark’s expressed that a large part of passing along the tradition and heritage of the woodie car rests with artists that have continued to feature the woodie as a central piece of California beach culture.

One such artist is Jennifer Brennan from Capistrano Beach who created the poster and official art for this year’s Doheny Wood event.

“I grew up in Dana Point and my favorite view of Doheny has to be from Palisades Hill,” Brennan said via email. “It captures what I see as the quintessential Southern California lifestyle: surfing, beach volleyball, skating, biking, sun bathing, camping and enjoying our beautiful beaches.”

Brennan graduated from San Clemente High School in 1987 and now proudly calls herself the mother of three teens. She has been painting for over 35 years.

“I love to create beach and ocean landscapes,” Brennan said. “I’m currently creating acrylic and resin pieces and have many new beach abstracts that are inspired by my love of nature and the ocean. All of my pieces are one-of-a-kind originals, and I love working on commissions. I will have a booth at Doheny Wood to showcase my art, and there will be a wide range to purchase from.”

Brennan mentioned she will also be featured in the Doheny Artwalk on June 10.

Doheny Wood begins at 8 a.m. with a Marine Corps color guard entrance. Three charities will be recognized this year including the Camp Pendleton branch of the Wounded Warriors, local California State Park Junior Lifeguard programs and the Huntington Beach Youth Shelter. A Matter of Principles

I

n 1997, then-5th District Supervisor Tom Wilson assembled a committee to plant the seeds for the revitalization of the Dana Point Harbor. Even then, more than 20 years ago, our beloved Harbor exhibited the stress of age and a cry for rejuvenation. So, this community task force gathered to craft a vision for the future of our Harbor, to establish a foundation for all the work that would follow. Little did they know then – and how troubled would they be now? – that 20 years later, there was little tangible affirmation of their vision. We are still walking the same crumbling docks, still dining and shopping in the same decaying buildings. However, their toils, as futile as they seemed over the subsequent two decades offered one enduring achievement.

In 1998, this committee produced a list of 12 priorities for the Harbor Revitalization Plan. These 12 Guiding Principles aimed to both instruct, and constrain, so much of what would follow in the redevelopment of our Harbor. They became both a guide to those who would undertake our Harbor's renovation and a shield to protect the early vision for our Harbor against periodic efforts to alter it. Indeed, had it not been for that task force’s original vision memorialized in those 12 Guiding Principles, we would likely be facing a harbor reconstruction plan in breach of the charm and character that define our beloved Harbor, and which so many have worked so hard to preserve. The 12 Guiding Principles have survived as a foundational document for the past 20 years, often referenced as decisions are made on our Harbor's present and future.

Tom Wilson’s task force disbanded shortly after it was formed, and our 12 Guiding Principles have endured untouched ever since, orphaned, yet nursed along by caring relatives. In one way they are a time capsule, a snapshot of what those early visionaries both desired

and feared in our new Harbor. They are a deeply-rooted pact with our heritage.

Yet they are also due for a revitalization of their own, an update to reflect today’s priorities.

After so many years of starts and stalls, redirections and misdirection, our Harbor may finally be on the cusp of actual renovation. As we prepare this year to transition our Harbor to a private developer to assume the Harbor Revitalization Plan and operate it for the next 66 years, and on the 20th anniversary of the 12 Guiding Principles, the new Dana Point Harbor Advisory Board has adopted stewardship of this OUR HOME PORT formative document and

This is not a wholly new set of priorities; instead, this is an evolution of these enduring principles within the framework of so much that has transpired over the past 20 years. For the next generation of our Harbor, here are the refreshed 12 Guiding Principles established by the Dana Point Harbor Advisory Board: 1. Maintain Dana Point Harbor’s smalltown charm, character and family atmosphere.

2. Protect Dana Point Harbor’s beauty and visual appeal.

3. Upgrade/replace existing, aging structures. Avoid radical expansion of the commercial/entertainment complex.

4. Maintain an affordable, full-service recreational boat harbor. Facilities to include boat marinas, ample sewage pump-outs, on-site dry boat storage with launch ramp facility, onsite day use trailer parking, fuel dock, ship yard, bait barge, and mast-up launching hoist.

5. Do not further commercialize the island. Existing and future commercial uses should remain boating and public

recreation-oriented.

6. Ensure the future of the two yacht clubs.

7. Maintain Clean Marina certification.

Improve and protect water quality.

8. Better utilize existing parking.

Provide more parking in commercial area.

Protect boater parking without significant increase in walking distance to docks.

9. Protect the OC Sailing & Events Center as a venue for education, community service and youth maritime development.

10. Address overall mix of land uses.

Maintain equilibrium among commercial/ entertainment, boating, community service and education uses, and open space. Protect balance of revenue and nonrevenue generating land uses.

11. Protect existing parkland, beach and landscape buffers. Enhance affordable public access.

12. Continue to provide restrooms and showers near the docks. Update the boater amenities and service buildings.

While these are mostly a modernization of the principles established back in 1998, there are two priorities new to this list.

While it should go without saying that we all desire to “protect Dana Point Harbor’s beauty and visual appeal,” and “protect the OC Sailing & Events Center as a venue for education, community service and youth maritime development,” challenges to these fundamental truths in the intervening years necessitated codifying them here. The remaining priorities reflect today’s harbor culture and reality and aim to protect them into the future.

These updated 12 Guiding Principles have been offered to our elected leaders and governing agencies as a framework to both instruct and constrain the revitalization of our Harbor into the future, just as our predecessors did 20 years ago. We encourage – no, we demand – that our Harbor be carried into the future with faith to these principles.

At the Movies: Hedy Lamarr Was More than a ‘Bombshell’

t feels crazy to associate someone as iconic and regarded as Hedy Lamarr with the word “underrated,” but she has been in many ways. For decades, film fans have viewed her as one of the most beautiful and glamorous movie stars in Hollywood history— which she is, naturally. But at home, she was also very creative and interested in science through inventions. Alexandra Dean’s recent documentary Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story sheds some light on the remarkable history and life of the film legend.

Born as Hedwig Kiesler in Vienna, Austria, Hedy spent her teens and early 20s acting in local Austrian films, most infamously the softcore-dirty flick Ecstasy (1933). By the time she was 23, L.B Mayer got her a contract with MGM, changed her name to Hedy Lamarr and

Out of the limelight, Hedy spent most of her time inventing things like her own carbonated drink and, most notably, a frequency-hopping signal.

Dean’s documentary fortunately features a lot of commentary by Lamarr’s own children and friends, as well as noted historians like Peter Bogdanovich and Robert Osborne. Bombshell not only covers the good parts of her career, like her fascinating fling with Howard Hughes or how her frequency invention paved the way for modern WiFi, but also her unhappy marriages and unfortunate methamphetamine addiction. BY CYNTHIA COSTA, D.C. ecent research in functional medicine tells us that our gut is the window to our brain. As the vast majority of the nerves from the stomach go to the brain, the mix and diversity of the bacteria in our gut can greatly influence its power. Therefore, the more diverse the bacteria in our gut, otherwise known as microbiome, the healthier the person typically is, according to Why Isn’t My Brain Working? by Dr. Datis Kharrazian.

Unfortunately, people in the United States have some of the lowest rates of gut microbiome. Low diversity in gut bacteria have been correlated with obesity, heart disease, immune dysfunction and neurological diseases. Therefore, gut health is one of the most important areas of the body to focus on healing since it has a direct correlation to the brain and all bodily functions.

A typical patient question I hear is, ‘why is my gut more sensitive than the guy sitting next to me, consistently eating plates of greasy nachos with beers, feeling ust fine ’ Gut symptoms can take a while to develop, as it starts with our genetic profile, but is eventually influenced by many lifestyle choices including, but not limited to: lifetime stresses, injuries, drug exposure, surgery, diet, other diseases, even how you were delivered and whether or not one was breast fed. These all affect the microbiome in the gut. Therefore, it is not practical to compare yourself to the nacho and beer guy.

Simply put, the human digestive tract starts from the mouth to the stomach where acids break down food, sending it to the small intestine, which introduces nutrients to the blood stream followed by the large intestine; which forms unwanted waste.

Severe chronic abdominal pain, excess gas, inability to digest foods, yeast overgrowth and brain fog are some of the most common symptoms associated with gut problems, from “The Neuroendocrine Immunology of Mucosal Activity” lecture by Kharrazian. The digestive tract at this point tends to be unable to release enzymes to break down our food that we need to absorb for fuel.

Proper bowel movements and a healthy communication of the nervous and endocrine system are affected. The longer these symptoms are untreated, the more severe the destruction is in the lining of the gut with the potential of triggering a permanent autoimmune disease.

The ‘pro’ in probiotics I have many patients that come in with gut symptoms

and are taking a general probiotic. The initial drawback is that one size does not fit all. There are different types of probiotics for different gut problems. For example, we would administer different probiotic strains for someone who is suffering from small intestine bacteria overgrowth, versus someone who has leaky gut disease in the large intestine, according to “The Neuroendocrine Immunology of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth” by Kharrazian.

There are different strands for different gut conditions.

Some conditions even call for probiotic enemas or fecal transplants—yes, it might sound crazy, but this is happening. It is important to first establish a proper diagnosis before deciding on the appropriate protocol.

Other potential natural solutions overlooked prior to adding a probiotic into a regular health routine include: • Using an appropriate supplement for a short period of time that helps kill the overgrowth of bad bacteria.

• Eliminating sugars from the diet altogether, as sugar feeds bad bacteria. Follow a low sugar, low carb diet high in healthy fats.

• Eating fermented foods that help with digestion or consider digestive enzymes.

• Ingest L glutamine, collagen, bone broth, short chain fatty acids, butyric acid and medium-chain triglycerides oil all heal the lining of the gut and increase the gut microbiome and absorption.

• Finding tools to help you increase sleep, exercise and sweat while decreasing stress.

• Do an annual gastrointestinal cleanse to give your gut a break. A cleanse should address food changes with supplements to help maximize the results with agents that help kill bad bacteria and replenish good bacteria.

• Limit antibiotics, if needed, use a probiotics after consumption.

• Eat as many diverse kinds of plant foods that you can tolerate. Don’t be a creature of habit go to the farmers’ market each week, find that plant that you don’t know about, then buy it and cook it.

There are many possible solutions to initially fi ing the gut. Probiotics serve a useful and beneficial purpose, especially when maximized with the proper diagnosis. Diversifying gut bacteria will promote a happy and vital gut life.

EASTERN HEALING Traditional Chinese medicine is a more natural approach to pain, anxiety, stress relief

BY DANIEL RITZ t has taken decades for acupuncture, formally known as traditional Chinese medicine, to be integrated into Western culture since international relations with China have opened up in the 1970s.

“We let the body heal itself,” explains Mike Hsu, acupuncturist and co-founder of Pacific Acupuncture Center in Dana Point.

Hsu and Mia Chou, fellow acupuncture practitioner and co-founder, opened Pacific Acupuncture Center in with the goal of integrating traditional Chinese medicine into Western culture. “(I started doing acupuncture) after I had taken time off after studying biochemistry,” Chou said, reflecting on her post-graduate studies where she met Hsu. “I was uneasy about the long-term effects of all of these drugs, all of the pills; we just didn’t know the permanent impacts. We still don’t. These powerful, and addictive drugs have not been around long enough to know the long-term impacts on our health.”

For decades, traditional Chinese medicine has been largely recognized by needle acupuncture, where needle points of varying thicknesses, plugged into the skin, trigger nerves below the skin to open up damaged or blocked neurochemical and hormone passages.

Traditionally, Chinese acupuncturists believe that disease and pain is caused by a disruption of energy throughout the body, called qi. Recent fMRI studies, such as those conducted by the Neuroscience Research Institute, have validated this belief by tracing brain activity to stimulation of specific acupuncture points.

“Most of the time,” Hsu interjected. “We can help prevent symptoms like physical pain from reaching the levels where our patients need to come in (for treatment).”

According to su and Chou, traditional Chinese medicine is a resource for those seeking relief from not only physical pain, but emotional and mental health barriers as well such as infertility, anxiety, stress, posttraumatic stress disorder and depression.

Hsu said the integration of traditional Chinese medicine into Western medicine is exactly that— an integration and not a switch.

“It isn’t a ‘this or that’ situation,” Hsu said. “Sometimes, Western medicine is appropriate, when something is structurally wrong within your body, you will need to go to the emergency room. We are looking to possibly lessen the frequencies of large-scale events, as best we can, before they get to traumatic levels.”

BY DANIEL RITZ riginally used to test the effects of complete sensory deprivation in the 1950s, floating via modern float tanks is becoming a popular physical and mental health practice for South Orange County residents.

“Floating” is the act of floating in a pool, or pod, of body-temperature water and Epsom salts in a room of equal temperature. Epsom salt-infused water provides adequate floatation.

Once inside the pool, or pod, a user is met with a variety of options. Some users will choose to go the way of complete sensory deprivation by turning off the lights, soundproofing the pod and eliminating all external sensory input. This assists the user in achieving a completely internal experience, alone with their thoughts and without the possibility of external distraction. Many practitioners describe this as rapid encouragement to reaching a meditative state.

Justin Feinstein, director of the LIBR Float Clinic & Research Center, the principal investigator at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research and an assistant professor at the University of Tulsa, believes floating could be a shortcut for many people to reach a meditative state and reap some of its proven benefits.

“Floating gives me hope that a whole chunk of our population that normally would never be able to meditate could now achieve those sorts of deep meditative states,” Feinstein said.

and by comparing the two images, can see how floating changes areas of activation in the brain.

Recent advances in neuroscience have allowed science to look inside the human brain during practices like meditation and see how brain activity changes. Research from fMRI studies done by Harvard Medical School, affiliated with assachusetts General Hospital, show that meditating activates parts of the brain associated with attention and decreases activation in the amygdala.

Acceptance by the medical establishment of these demonstrations and their proven benefits have followed after studies supported by the National Institute of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, found links between meditation and reducing anxiety

and hostility, reducing stress and assisting in relationship development.

Others, commonly beginner “floaters” or those looking for the more physical benefits, choose to have a more sensory “isolation” experience as compared to deprivation.

BY DANIEL RITZ s practicing any one of the many varieties of yoga now available in South Orange County becomes an easily accessible option for physical, mental and spiritual wellness, both first-time and e perienced yogis alike are faced with the choice of how to safely and effectively choose from a rapidly growing sea of new yoga instructors, and identify a teacher that is right for their desired e perience.

The 2016 “Yoga in America” study, conducted by Yoga Journal and Yoga Alliance, revealed the number of yoga practitioners in the United States increased to more than million in , up from . million in . percent of Americans say they are at least somewhat likely to practice yoga in the ne t months, or more than 80 million Americans, an ironic fact considering that percent of American practitioners have been practicing for less than five years.

That same study revealed that for every teacher, there were two people in teacher training. any yoga studios have opened yoga training courses, most South Orange County studios often charging more than , for base-level certification.

Quick hacks to make your office environment more nurturing

BY PAUL GARCIA, D.C. orkplace environments often present unique challenges to staying healthy. Many of my clients are completely unaware that their environment at work is a contributing factor to their pain, fatigue, mood-swings, weight gain and digestive complaints. With so much chronic disease nowadays, we need to have strategies for staying as healthy as possible. Here are some workplace hacks that you can implement to make your work environment more conducive to optimal health.

Supplement with vitamin D One of the most important things you’re missing if you work inside is sunlight.

Without adequate sunlight everyday you won’t be able to make enough vitamin D to keep you healthy. Vitamin D deficiencies are extremely common and can result in increased back pain, more colds and flus, higher risk of diabetes and even cancer. If you aren’t able to spend 20-30 minutes per day in direct sunlight then you must get your vitamin D from food or from supplements. Good sources of vitamin D include fatty fish, butter from grass-fed cows, and egg yolks. The best source to supplement with is vitamin D3 at 1,000-3,000IU/day depending on your blood levels. Your vitamin D should be between 39-70 ng/ML. Move around Most Americans sit between 8-12 hours each day. That means that nearly half of one’s entire working years could be spent sitting down. When you sit too much you are more likely to experience back pain, to acquire hypertension and high cholesterol, to gain more belly fat, and to be at greater risk of cardiovascular disease. In fact, sitting has been called the new smoking because studies show a strong connection between the time you spend sitting and your risk of having a heart attack.

Instead, move around the office as much as you can. Set a timer to remind you to get up every 20 minutes. Get outside and take a walk on your lunch break. Consider using a standing desk. Use every opportunity to move your body.

Cut out the snacks Snacks are everywhere in offices!

Snacking frequently during the day can lead to elevated levels of our hunger hormones insulin and ghrelin. When these hormones get too high, the result is insulin resistance (pre-diabetes), constant hunger and the inability to lose weight. Instead of visiting the vending machine, try having a cup of green tea or bone broth. This will boost your energy and focus without the unwanted rise in hunger hormones. Also consider intermittent fasting. This involves

eating your food each day in a 7-8-hour window and fasting for the remaining 1617 hours. Intermittent fasting can have dramatic affects on decreasing hunger, improving energy and concentration and increasing the anti-aging hormone known as human growth hormone (HGH).

Get good sleep Waking up refreshed and strong in the morning will help prevent binging on the wrong foods and increase your productivity while you’re at work. Your body requires 7-8 hours of restful sleep each night to be at its best. If you get less, this will increase your stress hormone know as cortisol. Prolonged spikes in cortisol can result in insomnia, weight gain, poor immune function, fatigue, hormone imbalance and irritability. To promote good sleep patterns, try going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, don’t over caffeinate and stop eating at least three hours before falling asleep.

Fill your office with plants Another strategy to promote health while at the office is to bring living plants into your space. Indoor plants have several documented therapeutic benefits, according to a study published in Sage Journal. The first is their ability to absorb airborne toxins. Most people

don’t realize it, but offices often contain numerous toxins that can cause issues with your health. Common office items like carpet, paint, insulation and cleaners emit a number of compounds that you probably don’t want to be inhaling. Several studies have found that indoor plants do an excellent job of removing compounds such as benzene, toluene, formaldehyde, and other potentially harmful gases from the air. The top air-purifying plants include English ivy, spider plants and peace lilies, all of which can live well indoors.

Also, studies by HortScience have shown that bringing plants into your office, home or classroom can promote relaxation, improve mental and physical well-being, improved behavior and increase overall happiness. Clearly, a simple indoor plant can do wonders for your health. They’re not very expensive, they’re attractive to look at and easy to maintain, and they don’t have to take up much space.

A

s the sails were raised on the 114’ schooner the Spirit of Dana Point, Ren Higgins bellowed sing-along sailor songs to inspire his crew, made up of largely curious land-lubbing Southern California residents.

On Earth Day, April 22, the Ocean Institute presented its first naturalist sail, where 15 citizen sailors boarded the Spirit of Dana Point in an attempt to combine nature and history in the ways their seabearing fore-fathers did, under the very elements themselves.

Higgins, a six-year crew member of the Spirit, began the sunny afternoon with a short presentation inside the Institute’s boathouse, explaining the prominence and importance of historical naturalists, including Charles Darwin, Thomas Nuttall and David Nelson, the naturalist on the voyages of Captain Cook.

Enlightened, the citizen scientists boarded the Spirit anxiously to explore the seas outside the Harbor.

They learned the diverse skill set of a scientist at sea as almost immediately, Higgins, under instruction from first mate Kristen McGowan, organized the citizensturned-crew-members into teams to raise the three main sails.

With light winds, the pace was slow, and was ideal for Haenebalske, McGowan and Higgins and other staff to single off with the earnest naturalists and take in the environment around them.

“This is the way, this is the sort of vessel that men have used to travel the seas for literally hundreds of years,” Haenebalske said. “It keeps history alive, and it forms a connection. I take pride in carrying on the tradition and introducing this to new people.”

A former schooner captain in the New York Harbor, Haenebalske glowed as he repeatedly shared the history of the schooner with his new deck-hands; and his opinion of it as “the Corvette of the sea.”

Higgins, who began as a volunteer at the Ocean Institute, felt similarly about his experience working with the public.

“It’s a joy working with the public, bringing them into this world,” Higgins remarked. “It’s always incredible for people to have their moments when they ‘understand something’ and connect to it.”

Upon saying that, the passionate Higgins, seeing something in the corner of his eye, dashed light-footed to the bow. He proceeded to track, identify and compare the common dolphin Delphinus delphis swimming below the Spirit.

Upon returning to the shore, Ocean Institute maritime program director Dan Goldbacher said universally, the crew and the more-than-a-dozen citizens, now equipped with upgraded sea-legs, enjoyed the tour.

Goldbacher said that the history of the famous naturalist characters that have passed through Dana Point, combined with the natural elements by land and by sea, hit all the elements of the Ocean Institute’s goal of universal “ocean literacy.”

“Humans are directly tied to the ocean,” Goldbacher reminded.

Stepping over the thick rope now tying the Spirit to the dock, the irony sets in that being tied to the ocean means recognizing the fluid motion of, and our space within, the bountiful natural beauty surrounding us in Dana Point. DP Page 23

Friend of 30 Years Ties the Knot in Greek Wedding

I

n the summer of 1988 while surfing at Doheny State Beach, I met a guy named Alex Rentziperis.

Between waves as we chatted, I asked, “What kind of work do you do?”

Alex said, “I’m a barber. And, in a few months, I’m going to open my own barbershop not too far from here in Dana Point.

How about you?”

I said, “I’m going to open my own deli, also not too far from here in Dana Point.”

That was the start of a friendship that has lasted for 30 years. Later that year, Alex opened the Sports Barber at the corner of Del Prado and Golden Lantern, above where StillWater Spirits & Sounds restaurant is now located.

In December 1988, I opened Tutor and Spunky’s Deli on Pacific Coast Highway, next to the Dana Point Donut Shop across from Rubens Imports.

Since 1988, we’ve done a lot together.

Most notably, after my divorce in 1994 and after putting up with some unsavory roommates, I finally was going to get to live alone in my Monarch Beach home.

That was before the phone rang. It was Alex calling from his San Juan Capistrano home.

“Toot,” he said, which was the nickname he had given me, “I’m getting a divorce. She asked me to leave. Got a spare bedGUEST OPINION room for a short time?”

Turned out to last for about a year. He often repeated vehemently that he would never marry again.

We took many camping trips to the Sierras together. I can still picture him standing on a huge rock, trying to master fly-fishing, casting into the icy waters of Lake Mary. He got a little too far forward on one cast and did a belly flop right into the lake. I told him he’d never make the Olympic team as a diver.

Alex’s passion is ocean fishing. He has a boat and is out on the water once or twice a week. He taught me how to catch sea bass near the kelp beds. He’s featured on the cover of Western Outdoor News, the largest weekly fishing and hunting magazine in the country.

Four years ago, Alex attended an age 55plus singles meet-and-greet event at Tutor and Spunky’s Deli. Alex’s sister, Faye Dalton, encouraged a recently divorced client of hers named Carolyn Young to attend the same event to meet her brother. I remember that night. Carolyn and Alex seemed enamored with each other. They’ve been a couple ever since.

On April 21, with many members of Alex’s big Greek family and members of Carolyn’s family in attendance, Alex and

Bike for Life Dana Point Grand Prix looks to encourage racers of all ages to stay on, return to their bicycles

T

he Dana Point Grand Prix of Cycling returns for its 12th edition on Sunday, April 29, and while the event continues to grow in size and prominence, the focus remains at home.

“Every year we’ve gotten bigger and bigger,” Dana Point Grand Prix executive director Russ Ames said. “Biggest one-day criterium event in America. That doesn’t really belie what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to build the community.”

The kids events at noon on Sunday are at the forefront of that community building.

“We’re expanding the youth part of it,” Ames said. “We’re expanding our partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley. They’re an integral part of the course. We’re trying to convey the message that cycling isn’t just for kids. It’s an endeavor you can do for the rest of your life.”

hat makes the Dana Hills golf team successful is on full display at the driving range of the Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club.

It’s not necessarily the distance of their drives or the ping of the club thwacking the ball – but make no mistake, these kids can swing. It’s the nature of the entire exercise.

Juniors Quentin Hill and Connor Beveridge trade swings as Hill, a left-hander, and Beveridge, a right-hander, face-off against each other in their stances.

They’re talking over form, laughing amongst themselves and their teammates lined up on the mats.

It’s the camaraderie that’s kept these Dolphins at the same level as their predecessors and led them to a fifth straight Dana Point Times April 27-May 3, 2018

Entering its fourth year as part of the kids events, the Grand Prix will hold a race for specially capable athletes. The children will race on specially constructed bikes, and just like all the kids races, any child under the age of 12 can enter for free.

Participants in the kids races will get a T-shirt and a participation medal made from a recycled bicycle chain.

“We knew we’d be young, but these guys have been working hard to get their spot,” Dana Hills coach Glenn Forster said. “Started off slow and now they’re coming together. They’re all best friends, and they all play golf together six, seven days a week. It’s a really cool bond these kids have.”

Dana Hills opened its league slate with a split over four matches, 2-2, but after a onestroke win over San Clemente, 193-194, at Bella Collina on April 10, the Dolphins won out through the rest of league. Dana Hills swept San Clemente and Aliso Niguel to earn the outright league championship.

“Ever since San Clemente, we really came together in that first match against them,” Hill said. “We had a lot of people pick it up when they needed too. We’ve all chipped in.”

Six different Dolphins posted the team’s low score at least once over the eight league matches – senior Matt Frandell, sophomores Gavin Whitehead and Dylan Walsh, freshman Jason Bannister, Hill and Beveridge.

“There hasn’t been one person that’s been carrying the team,” Forster said. “There’s a couple of kids that are really consistent, but anybody can go low on any day.”

Dana Hills now turns its attention to the postseason with the South Coast League Finals on Tuesday, May 1 and Wednesday,

“That’s the thing we’re trying to convey.

We’re all equal,” Ames said. “We don’t need to push being a winner on these kids.

We just want these kids to get on bikes.”

That goal of getting kids riding and expanding the culture of cycling is something that Ames hopes kids can do to lead their parents and other adults back to a bicycle.

“When we learn to ride a bike, we learn

the front of our sidewalk,” Ames said.

“When we took the training wheels off, you learn the whole street or the neighborhood.

Then you hit 16, and you get a car and move on to college, a career, the rest of your life, and people leave their bikes behind.”

“We’re trying to bring it back. It’s okay to start riding again, and to ride with your kids. You pick up these endeavors you did as a kid with this new enthusiasm.”

Those that haven’t dropped their bike and continued to push in cycling will be shown off in the professional races later in the afternoon.

While the Grand Prix has grown into an international race with teams registering from new countries each year, Southern California racers will still be on display.

“It’s really cool to have these international athletes,” Ames said. “But what the Dana Point Grand Prix is built on is the locals. We want to showcase their abilities. They’re young and they don’t have any big events to showcase them. This is a showcase for them to be recognized.

Maybe a bigger pro team will see the results and want to take a look at them.”

The Grand Prix will showcase local racers and local businesses.

Part of the aim of the Grand Prix is bringing a big event to Dana Point’s Lantern District, and the race has partnered with several local restaurants for meals and outdoor seating along the race route.

OBITUARY

Mary “Lynn” Mays Mary “Lynn” Mays passed away peacefully April 4th in her beloved San Clemente home. She was a fighter till the end and will be greatly missed by her two daughters, Amy and Becky Mays of San Clemente, and her sister, Judith O’Neil of Aliso Viejo.

Lynn was born in 1940 to Herbert and Mary Ziegler, and was raised in Evanston, IL. She was a long time San Clemente resident.

Besides being a mother of 2, she had a vital work life, spending countless hours being the core of Concordia Elementary School. She began her career as an attendance clerk and worked her way up to Office Manager when she retired in 2002.

A stroke in 2004 affected her life greatly but didn’t keep her from enjoying life. She loved her church family at St. Andrews UMC, attending musical concerts with her sister, and watching an infinite number of movies.

A “Celebration of Life” service will be held at St. Andrews by the Sea Methodist Church in San Clemente, May 19th at 1:00 pm. Art of the 30-Minute Session How to maximize limited water time when surfing locally

S

essions at Trestles are a treat. Even if you have a deluxe e-bike, there’s no “quick dip” at Uppers or Lowers.

Getting down to the cobblestone takes an investment in time and energy (albeit a good investment).

“I surfed for three hours this morning,” a friend of mine told me the other day. “It was pretty good.”

Good. Good for him. With a kid in elementary school, a steady stream of work deadlines and all the other wildcards that come with being a semi-functional adult, three-hour sessions aren’t always that easy to lock in. Sometimes all I have is 30 minutes at lunch to break out and get wet.

Sneaking in a short session is definitely better than no session at all. In such cases, refining the art of a quick paddleout is essential.

It starts with a plan. Know exactly where you’re going to surf, what you’re going to ride and how much time it all entails. Check the tides, buoys and webcams

before you get on the road to ensure success. The Surfline app is helpful for all of this (just don’t get in an accident checking the cams while you’re driving).

You’re also going to want to have your gear situation “on lock.” This means boards and a wetsuit should be organized in the car, fins in boards, leashes at the ready, and don’t forget leash strings, wax and sunscreen. Click-and-go fin designs like the FCS 2 series make getting the right fins in your board a literal snap—no fin screws needed.

You’re also going to have to have the ins and outs of getting to your spot dialed in.

As noted above, no Trestles session takes only 30 minutes, so you’re going to be

looking for alternatives closer to the sand.

The San Clemente beach breaks are ideal for this, as is Salt Creek and even San O. (Just be ready to run up and down the hill at Creek, and forget San O if the summertime line of cars is flaring).

When you get to your spot, park as close to the water as humanly possible. That doesn’t mean circle the block 10 times waiting for a parking place to open up, but be efficient. Park, suit up and go. Traffic is your enemy. Cutting down on wasted time translates into more time in the water, which means more waves.

With your vehicle in park, it’s go time.

rayden Burch is rolling! The 13-yearold San Clemente ripper has posted wins in the 14-and-under division of the last two Western Surfing Association (WSA) contests, and at present, he is leading the ratings in the WSA and Scholastic Surf Series (SSS).

A seventh-grader at Shorecliffs Middle School, he’s the prototypical San Clemente grom with big dreams and larger-than-life heroes.

“I mostly look up to guys in town like brother (Kolohe Andino) and Griffin (Colapinto). Oh, and Jordy (Smith) because he does the biggest turns,” Burch said.

your session in trunks or a spring suit; all the better. It takes precious time to yank wetsuits on and off. You’re only going to be in the water for 30 minutes max, suck it up (Maybe don’t try that just yet as local waters are still hovering in the upper 50s).

When time is of the essence, wear a watch. Marriages have been ruined and jobs have been lost when surfers lose track of time. Any waterproof watch will work, but the Rip Curl Search GPS Watch is handy because you can literally document every move you make during your session, and then when you’re back at work later, you can analyze the data and see how you did.

As far as your actual strategy when you hit the water, get busy right away. Pick off a small insider to get the rhythm going.

If you paddle out and sit for 10 minutes, a third of your session is already over. Keep moving the whole time. Think of it as “sprint surfing.” This doesn’t mean annoy everyone around you, but take advantage of opportunities you might ignore if you were going to stay out longer. Getting the wave count up is key.

Also, try and pick off at least two or three waves that you can be satisfied with.

Sometimes all it takes is one. Don’t get so distracted by trying to catch everything around you that you put yourself out of position for the good ones. Like everything in surfing, it’s a balancing act.

After the clock runs out, hustle back to the car, bust out your rinse to get the sand and salt off before you jump back into your civilian clothes. Nobody will be the wiser that you just took a shower in the parking lot. Reload your gear and get on your way, your perfect 30-minute session is a success. DP
